Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) Cell reduction carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is a promising avenue for converting CO 2 into valuable products. In this work, a flowable electrode with a rotating impeller collector was proposed to enhance the efficiency of the carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) in a photoelectrochemical system. Titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 ), with its capacitive properties, serves as a catalyst and is fluidized in the cathode chamber. The frequent contact between the Ti 3 C 2 catalysts and the rotating impeller collector extends the catalytic reaction throughout the catholyte and enhances the efficiency of CO 2 RR. The feasibility of the design was verified through suspension characterization, CO 2 diffusion concentration measurement, capacitance characterization, and experimental factor analysis. The PEC with a flow electrode exhibits CO and CH 4 production rates of 1.64 μmol g −1 h −1 and 9.62 μmol g −1 h −1 , respectively, which are 3.5 and 7.2 times higher than those of the fixed cathode. The Faradaic efficiency for CH 4 reaches 92.4%. Moreover, the collision probability of the flow electrode is 17.7%, which is significantly higher than that of the conventional bubbling fluidized electrode. In addition, the capacitive properties of Ti 3 C 2 particles favor the continuous CO 2 RR under open circuit conditions, which was verified by an EDS test of Na + . Finally, the operational mechanism of the PEC system is described.

Self-CO 2 Recycling Photocatalytic Fuel Cell for Enhancing Degradation of Pollutants and Production of Carbon-Neutral Fuel

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical oxidation is considered a promising way for the treatment of refractory organic wastewater owing to its high efficiency and low cost. However, CO2 was still the final emission product in this system. Here, we designed a novel CO2 self-driving and self-recycling photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) system for enhancing the degradation of refractory organic pollutants and ultimately converting it into fuel. The carbon-neutral PFC system achieved an increase of 40% in organics removal and an extra C1 fuel yield rate of 6.7 μmol g–1 h–1, compared to the conventional photocatalytic system. CO2 produced from wastewater degradation in the anode can be spontaneously supplied to the rotating cathode under positive pressure. The CO2 reduction reaction occurring at the cathode accelerated the electron–hole separation in photoanode and facilitated the formation of C1 fuel in the cathode. The isotope tracer experiment confirmed that the carbon source of C1 fuel products was from organics. Abstract:In order to reduce the high polarization caused by the hysteresis effect of O2-diffusion and boost the power density of oxygen cathode under transient heavy load, Al-MOF derived porous carbon modified Pt/C catalyst is proposed for a new capacitive ORR catalyst to construct super fuel cell (SFC) via ORR + EDLC dual discharge parallel process. Here, capacitive porous carbon material (BTCC-2) with high specific surface area (SSA) and high graphitization was synthesized by one-step carbonization of Al-MOF (Al-BTC). After compounding BTCC-2 with commercial Pt/C catalysts, the electrochemical tests reveal that the composite with 40% BTCC-2 provides the highest transient discharge performance. Moreover, the composite has a higher onset potential and limiting current density (5.236 mA cm-2) than Pt/C, and a half-wave potential (0.833 V) comparable to that of Pt/C. The abundant pore structure and large surface of BTCC-2 greatly increase the interaction of oxygen and catalyst surface. Besides, the contained BTCC-2 plays a significant power bank to remarkably buffer and relieve the rapidly decreasing output voltage at the instant heavy load due to the oxygen deficiency of the Zn-Air battery through the ORR + EDLC dual parallel discharge process. The proposed SFC will be a universal method to solve the sluggish ORR process and provide higher transient power density for fuel cell driven vehicles.

Abstract:BiOBr/TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) photoanodes were prepared via a two-step method. The microstructure and performance were investigated. BiOBr/TNAs with 15 deposition cycles showed the highest activity and thus worked as photoanode to construct a photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC). Compared with a single photoanode, BiOBr/TNAs-Pt PFC improved photocatalytic activity due to better separation of photoexcited holes and electrons, and exhibited superior simultaneous electricity generation ability. Besides, the working mechanism of PFC was illustrated to clarify the photocatalytic reactions in detail.

Abstract:This work reports a novel TiO 2 /g-C3N4 photoanode-based photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) designed to convert chemical energy from simulated wastewater. The g-C3N4 modified TiO 2 nanorod was successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The results indicated that the maximum photocurrent density reached 2.44 mA cm -2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE by 1.167 g L -1 g-C3N4 loaded TiO 2 composite. On the basis of analysis, the photoelectrochemical mechanism of the composite photoanode was proposed. This mainly demonstrated that the composite photoanode increases the electron donor density and boosts charge separation efficiency. In addition, the power density and hydrogen production of the proposed PFC were enhanced by 5.37 and 1.49 times compared to TiO 2 photoanode-based PFC. To find the origins of the excellent performance of PFC, the influence of the organic compounds were investigated. The ESR measurement results indicated that the organic matter was captured by the photoexcited holes directly to facilitate the charge separation. The achieved power density and hydrogen production of 0.14 mW cm -2 and 21.60 μmol h -1 cm -2 were measured using RhB as the model pollutant, which was 2.42 and 1.23 times higher than the experiments with PBS electrolyte. This study proposed a novel PFC system converts the organic pollutant to the hydrogen and the electricity.

Abstract:Environmental pollution and new energy development have become topics of increasing concern. Herein, a visible-light-driven photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) with double photoelectrodes was constructed for simultaneous electricity generation and pollutant degradation, in which graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) generated on W/WO 3 nanorod arrays (W/WNR/g-C 3 N 4 ) was used as the photoanode and Fe 3+ -doped CuBi 2 O 4 thin film on indium tin oxide (ITO) conductive glass (ITO/CBFeO) was used as the photocathode. The experimental results showed that the WO 3 /g-C 3 N 4 Z-scheme structure and one-dimensional WNR rod-like structure could effectively suppress the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers and enable W/WNR/g-C 3 N 4 to present a good photocurrent response under visible light irradiation. The Fermi level mismatch between the W/WNR/g-C 3 N 4 photoanode and ITO/CBFeO photocathode could improve the transfer of photogenerated electrons from the photoanode to the photocathode across the external circuit, enabling the constructed PFC to afford high electricity output and good efficiency for pollutant degradation. The short-circuit current density and maximum power density could reach 620 μ A cm −2 and 110 μ W cm −2 , respectively, while the degradation ratio of oxytetracycline reached 97.6% in 90 min. Therefore, the proposed PFC system provides a new way to generate electric energy and degrade pollutants simultaneously.

Abstract:Developing efficient and sustainable photoelectrodes in photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) system remains a major challenge. In this work, a PFC system (WO 3 |P-BiVO 4 /CQDs) was established based on WO 3 photoanode and P-BiVO 4 photocathode loaded with carbon quantum dots (CQDs) for Cr(VI) reduction with simultaneous electricity production. The photocatalytic performance of the constructed PFC system was characterized by various analytical methods. With the introduction of CQDs, both Cr(VI) reduction and maximum power density ( P max ) have been significantly enhanced. When the loading amount of CQDs was 150 μL, its Cr(VI) reduction rate and maximum power density ( P max ) were respectively 90 % and 0.10 mW/cm 2 within 180 min of illumination, superior to the WO 3 |P-BiVO 4 system. This was attributed to the decoration of CQDs, which broadened the light absorption range, increased the isolation efficiency of charge carriers and ultimately enhanced the ability of the fabricated PFC system. The superior stability and practicability were also demonstrated by five cyclic experiments. In addition, the plausible mechanism was proposed. This work offers an important reference for the application of the PFC system in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this research, MIL-53(Fe)@BiOBr/TCN/Ti photoanode was created using the secondary silica sol drop coating method, and assembled with Cu cathode to form photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) to degrade rhodamine B and generate electricity. The resulting PFC has high visible light response and photocatalytic activity. It has a rhodamine B degradation efficiency of 92.19%, a maximum power density of 6.2 μW cm −2 , and a maximum photocurrent density of 0.11 mA cm −2 . Its strong photocatalysis capabilities benefits from the wider light absorption range and lower charge carrier recombination rate of the photoanode. The double Z-scheme heterojunction formed among BiOBr, MIL-53(Fe) and TCN in the composite catalyst of the photoanode provide more transfer channels for photogenerated e − and encourage the separation of e − -h + pairs. ∙OH and ∙O - 2 are the main active substances for rhodamine B degradation. This study offers a novel approach to the development of high-efficiency photoanodes for PFC.

Abstract:A double perovskite PrBa0.5Sr0.5Co1.5Fe0.5O5+δ electrode surface has been regulated with a Pr0.9Fe0.7Co0.3O3 catalyst coating, demonstrating remarkable activity for the oxygen reduction reaction and excellent tolerance to contaminate poisoning under realistic operational conditions of protonic ceramic fuel cells, as confirmed by electrochemical impedance spectra analyses, fuel cell performance evaluation, Raman spectroscopic analysis, and density functional theory calculations. Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) are one of the most efficient energy conversion devices. However, the performance of current PCFCs is greatly limited by the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics and the fast degradation of the cathode due to contaminants poisoning (such as Cr species and steam). Here, a surface regulation of a double perovskite PrBa0.5Sr0.5Co1.5Fe0.5O5+δ (PBSCF) cathode by a Pr0.9Fe0.7Co0.3O3 (PFC) catalyst coating to enhance the ORR activity and stability is reported. When tested in direct contact with Cr in the air with 3% H2O at 650 °C, the polarization resistance (Rp) of the PFC coated PBSCF (PFC‐PBSCF) electrode increases from ≈0.39 to 0.45 Ω cm2 after 100 h operation; in contrast, the Rp of a PBSCF electrode increases from 0.63 to 0.82 Ω cm2. Further, a PCFC with the PFC‐PBSCF cathode demonstrates an excellent peak power density (≈1.08 W cm–2 at 650 °C) and significantly enhanced durability (degradation rate of 0.03% h−1), much better than those of the cells with a PBSCF cathode (≈0.75 W cm–2 and degradation rate of 0.12% h−1). Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations indicate that the PFC catalyst coating diminishes the formation of Cr species, such as (Ba1‐xSrx)CrO4, on the cathode surface.

Abstract:Excessive emission of CO2 has threatened the global climate and human health. Electrolysis offers a promising avenue to convert CO2 into valuable fuels such as methane. However, the electrolysis of CO2 often limited by a long diffusion pathway and high mass transfer resistance from electrolyte to the surface of catalysts. In this paper, we propose a bubbling fluidized electrode with catalyst/ionomer interface design, allowing an efficient gas transport and a high local CO2 concentration near the surface of catalysts. By applying above design strategy, the bubbling fluidized electrode exhibits a remarkably decreased diffusion length of CO2 as low as several nanometers and delivers a high selectivity with a faradic efficiency of ∼100 % at −0.4 V vs RHE. The universality of the interface design is further verified by using different hydrophobic materials, achieving a remarkably improved performance. In the actual application, a photoelectrochemical cell equipped with the bubbling fluidized electrode shows a high stability with a FE > 90 %. These results demonstrate a viable strategy to facilitate the electrolysis process involving gas-electrolyte-solid phase reactions (e.g., CO2 reduction reaction) through a bubbling fluidized electrode with catalyst/ionomer interface design.

Abstract:Artificial photosynthesis, which combines photocatalytic CO2 reduction with water oxidation to produce carbon-based fuels and feedstocks, has gained extensive interests nowadays. To optimize this system, a synergistic promotion of CO2 reduction and water oxidation is required. However, an obstacle to achieving this synergy is the contradiction in the preferred reaction environments between CO2 reduction (favoring a gas-solid circumstance) and water oxidation (preferring a water-solid circumstance). To address this challenge, we have developed a floatable catalyst by sequentially layering Cu2O, Ag and TiO2 on a PTFE membrane support. When this catalyst floats on gas-water boundary and is illuminated, oriented charge separation occurs across the membrane and the tri-phase (gas-water-solid) interface. Photogenerated electrons accumulate on the side of membrane exposed to the gas phase, initiating gas-solid CO2 reduction. Simultaneously, holes transfer to the side immersed in water, facilitating water-solid water oxidation. This design enhances production rate by 120 folds and 10 folds for CO2 reduction and water oxidation to H2O2 at most, and selectivity by up to 105 times and 2 times for these two half-reactions at most, when comparing to conventional gas-solid or water-solid system, or the tri-phase system on catalysts without oriented charge separation. Distinctive to the generally considered catalyst-centered strategies, this study provides a new insight to optimize photocatalysis through the regulation of reaction environment.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel dual heterojunction Photocatalytic Fuel Cell (PFC) system based on BiVO4/TiO2 nanotubes/FTO photoanode and ZnO/CuO nanowires/FTO photocathode has been designed. Compared with the electrodes in PFCs reported in earlier literatures, the proposed heterojunction not only enhances the visible light absorption but also offers a higher photoconversion efficiency. In addition, the nanostructured heterojunction owns a large surface area that ensures a large amount of active sites for organics degradation. The performance of the PFC base on the dual photoelectrodes was also studied herein. The results indicated that the PFC in the paper exhibits a superior performance and its JV(max) reached 0.116 mw cm(-2), which is higher than that in most of reported PFCs with a Pt-free photocathode. When hazardous organic compounds such as methyl orange, Congo red and methylene blue were decomposed, the degradation rates obtained is to be 76%, 83%, and 90% respectively after 80 mins reaction. The proposed heterojunction photoelectrodes provided great potential for cost-effective and high-efficiency organic pollutants degradation and electricity generation in a PFC system. Highly-active, metal-free, carbon-based ORR cathode for efficient organics removal and electricity generation in a PFC system

Abstract:A highly-active, metal-free, carbon-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) cathode, i.e. graphitized N-doped carbon felt (GNCF), was prepared, for the first time, by in-situ modifying the doping species of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon felt (CF) via a facile annealing process in Ar atmosphere. It was applied for dramatically enhanced organics degradation and electricity generation in a photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) system. The GNCF showed enhanced specific surface area, improved graphitization and raised ratio of graphitic N, therefore resulting in excellently improved ORR performance compared to the CF. When applying the GNCF as a cathode in a PFC system, the proposed PFC showed significant improvement in degrading various model organic contaminants and outputing electricity simultaneously when compared with the PFC with CF. For instance, the apparent rate constant and electricity output efficiency showed ∼10.6 times and ∼7.2 times, respectively, improvement when using rhodamine B as model waste. Further improved performance was also achieved by aeration of air or O2 due to the further enhanced ORR. The proposed PFC was also efficient in a wide pH, and kept outstanding stability in long-term utilization.

Abstract:Cu foam combined with Pt-modified reduced graphene oxide (Pt-RGO) was investigated as an efficient cathode for CO2 reduction in a photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) cell with a TiO2 nanotube (TNT) photoanode. The synergistic catalytic mechanisms between photocatalysis and electrocatalysis in such a photoanode driven 2-electrode PEC cell were experimentally verified and theoretically analyzed. The dual functional Cu foam, as a cathode electrode and a Pt-RGO catalyst matrix, markedly increased the carbon atom conversion rate because of its well-defined porosity, large specific surface area, and in particular its affinity for CO2 reduction to hydrocarbons. Combination of the Cu foam matrix and Pt-RGO catalysts resulted in synergistic CO2 reduction in the (Pt-RGO/Cu foam) kTNT PEC cell. The carbon atom conversion rate markedly increased to 4340 nmol (h(-1) cm(-2)) by optimizing CO2 reduction conditions in the PEC cell, including voltage applied through the cell, Pt loading amount on RGO, and Pt-RGO loading amount on Cu foam.

Abstract:In this study, a photocatalytic benthic microbial fuel cell was developed and the cell performance was tested. A photocathode was fabricated by electrodeposition of Cu2O photocatalysts on carbon felt; with a proper deposition time of 15 min, a photocathode with optimal Cu2O compactness and an average Cu2O particle size of 0.97 μm was fabricated and was then covered with an amorphous carbon thin layer. Photoelectrochemical test results prove the pronounced visible light response of the fabricated photocathode. Results show that the coating of carbon thin layer could protect the Cu2O from self-reduction and also improve the photoelectrochemical performance of Cu2O crystalline grains. The photo-benthic microbial fuel cell (BMFC) produces a maximum power density of 249.0 mW m−2 and 186.7 mW m−2 under light irradiation and in the dark, which is 17.8 and 13.3 times higher than the common BMFC using carbon felt cathode in parallel, demonstrating the catalytic and photocatalytic effect of the fabricated photocathode. Polarization and EIS results prove the decrease of internal resistance by using the photocathode. The fabricated photocathode could improve the oxygen reduction rate on the cathode side, thus reduce the internal resistance and enhance the BMFC performance.

Ultrasonic cavitation enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction by superior flexible black BaTiO3 nanofibers

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is an attractive strategy to realize carbon–neutral economy but is challenging by its low efficiency and uncontrollable selectivity. Here, we report a new flexible black BaTiO3 nanofiber (B-BTO NF) and prove its unique function of ultrasonic cavitation enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction into controllable syngas. The B-BTO NFs with a large deformation ability and a high mechanical strength contain unsaturated Ti3+ coordination and vacancy defects. Under ultrasound, the NF film gathers abundant cavitation bubbles, and the continual explosions of these bubbles bring periodic piezoelectric polarization changes and release net charges on B-BTO NFs, thus triggering photocatalytic CO2 reduction into syngas. Moreover, the product selectivity can be controlled by facilely adjusting the ultrasonic frequency and power. As a result, the evolution rate of target syngas (CO/H2 ≈ 1:1.3) reaches as high as 12525 μmol/g/h. The proposed flexible B-BTO NF induced ultrasonic cavitation-enhancement strategy provides new insights for designing photocatalysts.

Abstract:Photo electrodes based on conductive carbon materials are prepared via hydrothermal loadings of Fe-MoS2/reduced graphene oxide (rGO, 300 W Xe) or ZnFe2O4/Ag/Ag3VO4 (9 W LED light). The photo electrodes are used in developing a promising and attractive photo-catalytic fuel cell (PFC) that can realize simultaneous pollutant degradation, power output and hydrogen generation. The photo electrodes were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis) and electrochemical analysis (LSV, CV, I-t). The degradation removal of Methyl orange (MO, 10 mg L−1) or berberine (BBR, 10 mg L−1) in a formic acid solution often used for hydrogen generation can reach ~98.2% and ~90.1% after 2 h irradiation in PFC, with a cell voltage of ~400 mV and hydrogen generation at ~0.025 μmol cm−2. Presence of formic acid promotes degradation of MO and BBR, while the presence of MO or BBR affects hydrogen generation adversely. The bias over the two photo electrodes drives the transfer of electrons from ZnFe2O4/Ag/Ag3VO4 to the Fe-MoS2/rGO and protons capture the electrons to form hydrogen. The holes and reactive oxidative species (ROS) oxidize the organics. This reduced the recombination of photo-induced carriers, thus improved the pollutant removal and hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:A great quantity of wastewater were discharged into water body, causing serious environmental pollution. Meanwhile, the organic compounds in wastewater are important sources of energy. In this work, a high-performance short TiO2 nanotube array (STNA) electrode was applied as photoanode material in a novel photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) system for electricity production and simultaneously wastewater treatment. The results of current work demonstrate that various model compounds as well as real wastewater samples can be used as substrates for the PFC system. As a representative of model compounds, the acetic acid solution produces the highest cell performance with short-circuit current density 1.42mAcm−2, open-circuit voltage 1.48V and maximum power density output 0.67mWcm−2. The STNA photoanode reveals obviously enhanced cell performance compared with TiO2 nanoparticulate film electrode or other long nanotubes electrode. Moreover, the photoanode material, electrolyte concentration, pH of the initial solution, and cathode material were found to be important factors influencing the system performance of PFC. Therefore, the proposed fuel cell system provides a novel way of energy conversion and effective disposal mode of organics and serves well as a promising technology for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2-to-CO conversion is a significant alternative to lower CO2 emission and build carbon-neutral processes, as well as produce CO, which can directly serve as a syngas precursor for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. However, the easy water flooding of the gas diffusion electrode (GDE) employed in a flow cell during CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) electrolysis remains a tough problem. Consequently, it breaks the electrolyte/catalyst/CO2 triphase interface and lowers the FECO. Herein, the combined inarching of amino-substituted cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc-NH2) and octadecylamine (ODA) onto the surface of the CNT via an amide bond was designed and fabricated. The obtained composite catalyst, labeled as CoPc-CNT-ODA, shows atomically dispersed metal active sites endowed with superior and stable hydrophobicity. When applied to CO2RR in a flow cell, the CoPc-CNT-ODA electrode displays a high CO faradic efficiency (FECO) of 97.7% and a partial current density (j CO) of 154.8 mA·cm–2 at an applied potential of −1.0 V (vs RHE). Moreover, the FECO values are all above 90% from −0.8 to −1.2 V (vs RHE). Even after electrolyzing at −1.0 V for 12 h, the FECO still remains at 88.3%, implying the superior stability of the CoPc-CNT-ODA electrode. The proposed methodology for GDE/catalyst improvement can be extended to other triphase interfaces involved in catalytic systems.
