Abstract:The sustainable management for solid wastes of the construction and demolition waste stimulates searching for safety applications for these wastes. The aim of this research is recycling of construction and demolition waste with some different types of polymeric resins to be used in manufacturing process of polymer mortar or polymer concrete, and studying their mechanical and physical properties, and also Specify how the values of compressive strength and the density are affected via the different parameters. In this research two types of construction and demolition waste were used as aggregates replacement (i.e. waste cement/concrete debris, and the waste blocks) while the two types of polymer resins (i.e. Unsaturated polyester and Epoxy) as cement replacements. The used weight percentages of the resins were changed within (1°, 20, 25 and 30) % to manufacture this polymer concrete.

Sustainable Cement Mortar with Recycled Plastics Enabled by the Matrix-Aggregate Compatibility Improvement

Abstract:Use of recycled waste plastics (RWPs) as the aggregates of concrete has attracted increasing attention for sustainable concrete manufacture with great environmental benefits. However, the replacement of natural aggregates by RWPs always results in degradation of mechanical properties due to poor aggregate-matrix compatibility, which greatly limits the uses of RWPs in practical concrete manufacture. In order to overcome this shortage, polymer (ethylene-vinyl acetate, EVA) coated RWPs, i.e. polypropylene (PP) and polyamide (PA), were investigated to tune the aggregate-matrix interactions in cement mortars. Density, strength and ductility were measured to assess the physical and mechanical properties of mortars with RWPs. Microstructure was qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with backscattered electron (BSE) mode and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Results showed that single EVA addition into cement mortars kept the mortar density, decreased the compressive and flexural strengths, but increased the deformation and energy absorption to an extent of 100% in mortars with high EVA content. While the addition of RWPs witnessed a reduction in density of about 13-16%. The dual mix of 10% RWPs and 5% EVA mitigated the reduction trend in compressive strength and provided a slight increase (1.5%) in flexural strength compared with the mortars with single mix of 10% RWPs. The EVA addition built organic-inorganic interfacial transition zones (ITZs), improving the matrix-RWPs adhesion and coordinate their deformations. The mechanisms of compatibility improvement of EVA on RWP-cement mortar were proposed towards future design and fabrication of green concrete.

Abstract:In-situ polymerization of polymers with cement can greatly improve the engineering performances of cementitious composites, the structural mechanisms, however, remain still not fully established. Herein in-situ polymerization modified cementitious composites (iPMCC) with sodium acrylate (SA) in different dosages (0%, 4% and 8%) were fabricated. Flowability, strength, deformability, and water sorptivity of the iPMCCs were tested, and the multi-scale structures in terms of pore size distribution, microscopic morphology, chemical characteristics, and solid structure of calcium-silicate (-aluminate)-hydrates were characterized. Results demonstrate that, compared with neat cement paste, the iPMCC with 4% SA showed the improvement of flowability by 35.1%, the increases of flexural and compressive strength by 109.0% and 11.8%, the rises of flexural and compressive deformation energy by 458.8% and 161.0%, and the decrease of water sorptivity by 19.1%. The in-situ SA polymerizations lead to substantial pore refinement, but macro defects in the iPMCC with 8% SA. Cross-linked sodium polyacrylate networks formed in the cement matrix and interacted with the cement hydrates, accounting for the improved strength, deformability, and water resistance. Cement hydration depression by polymers was evidently supported by the NMR data. The findings would deepen the understandings of multi-scale structure of cementitious composites with polymers, enabling development of highly ductile and durable construction materials.
Determining engineering properties of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced geopolymer concrete modified with different waste materials

Abstract:Reprocessing solid waste materials is a low-cost method of preserving the environment, conserving natural resources, and reducing raw material consumption. Developing ultra-high-performance concrete materials requires an immense quantity of natural raw materials. The current study seeks to tackle this issue by evaluating the effect of various discarded materials, waste glass (GW), marble waste (MW), and waste rubber powder (WRP) as a partial replacement of fine aggregates on the engineering properties of sustainable ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced geopolymer concrete (UHPGPC). Ten different mixtures were developed as a partial substitute for fine aggregate, each containing 2% double-hooked end steel fibers, 5%, 10%, and 15% GW, MW, and WRP. The present study assessed the fresh, mechanical, and durability properties of UHPGPC. In addition, to evaluate concrete development at the microscopic level due to the addition of GW, MW, and WRP. Spectra of X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and mercury intrusion (MIP) tests were conducted. The test results were compared to current trends and procedures identified in the literature. According to the study, adding 15% marble waste and 15% waste rubber powder reduced ultra-high-performance geopolymer concrete's strength, durability, and microstructure properties. Even so, adding glass waste improved the properties, as the sample with 15% GW had the highest compressive strength of 179 MPa after 90 days. Furthermore, incorporating glass waste into the UHPGPC resulted in a good reaction between the geopolymerization gel and the waste glass particles, enhancing strength properties and a packed microstructure. The inclusion of glass waste in the mix resulted in the control of crystal-shaped humps of quartz and calcite, according to XRD spectra. During the TGA analysis, the UHPGPC with 15% glass waste had the minimum weight loss (5.64%) compared to other modified samples.

Abstract:The incorporation of construction and demolition (C&D) waste in concrete production has gained great importance toward sustainability, especially in geopolymer concrete. In this study, ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS) and fine aggregate of normal geopolymer concrete were partially replaced by clay brick powder (CBP) and fine clay brick (FCB) derived from C&D waste, respectively, aiming to produce high-strength geopolymer concrete (HSGC). Fly ash (FA) was also used as a partial replacement for GGBFS in normal geopolymer concrete. Twenty HSGC mixtures were designed using the response surface methodology with three variables, including CBP (0–25%), FA (0–25%), and FCB (0–50%). The performance of the proposed HSGC mixtures was assessed by measuring several mechanical and durability properties. In addition, a variety of physicochemical methods, including X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy, were used to examine the mineralogical and microstructural characteristics of the control and the developed mixtures. The findings revealed that the compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strengths of the HSGC made with C&D waste ranged from 38.0 to 70.3 MPa, 4.1 to 8.2 MPa, and 5.2 to 10.0 MPa, respectively. The results also indicated that the incorporation of FA is an essential parameter to eliminate the negative impacts of C&D waste addition on concrete workability. The optimal proportions for the HSGC were 5% for CBP, 5% for FA, and 40% for FCB, which were determined to generate the optimized HSGC with the highest mechanical performance, according to the verified models and optimization findings. The physicochemical analyses showed that the thick amorphous geopolymeric gel predominated the nonporous structure of the optimized HSGC, which had good mechanical characteristics. Furthermore, the anti-carbonation performance and freezing resistance of the optimal HSGC increased by 17.7% and 14.6%, respectively, while the apparent porosity decreased by 8.4%.

Abstract:Plastic is one of the prominent solid wastes and its ineffective disposal has caused environmental issues. Previous research focused onthe replacement of aggregates with waste plastic in the concrete mix. This study focused on the utilization of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic as a binder for construction application. The waste PET plastic was melted and mixed with different filler materials to give a homogenous and uniform mortar/concrete-like composite using different formulation ratio of 1:0, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3. The influence of the filler materials and the varying mix composition on the engineering and morphology properties of the resulting composite was investigated. The morphology of the waste plastic composite samples showed that the filler materials filled the pores present in the molten plastic, thereby reinforcing it. The results indicated that, the density, compressive strength, and water absorption increase as the content of the filler material increases. However, composites of plastic-sand, and plastic-quarry dust at ratio 1:3 gave higher compressive strength values of 20.30 and 20.10 N/mm 2 respectively, which meet up with the minimum requirement of 17 N/mm 2 compressive strength for structural lightweight concrete as specified by ACI and BS standards. Thus, they can be adopted for structural purposes.

Abstract:As the global concrete industry shifts towards sustainable practices, there is an increasing focus on mitigating the environmental impacts of ordinary Portland cement (OPC)-based concrete, which is notorious for its significant greenhouse gas emissions, high energy consumption, and substantial demand for natural resources. This urgency is compounded by the growing production of waste tile ceramic materials due to rapid urban development, leading to enhanced research into their recyclability within concrete for improved durability and sustainability. This study explores the development of high-strength concrete utilizing waste tile ceramic aggregates (WTCAs) and waste tile ceramic powder (WTCP) as replacements for natural aggregate and OPC, respectively. To further enhance the concrete's mechanical properties and microstructure, silica nanoparticles derived from waste bottle glass (WBGNPs) were integrated in varying proportions ranging from 2 % to 10 % of the binder content. Optimal results were achieved with a full replacement of natural aggregate by WTCAs, 60 % substitution of OPC by WTCP, and the inclusion of 4 % WBGNPs, which collectively exhibited superior compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strengths. Microstructural analyses revealed that the addition of WBGNPs improved the hydration process, increased gel density, and reduced porosity. From the obtained numerical results, the coefficient of determination value of 0.92 further confirms the model's predictive strength, demonstrating that the Random Forest algorithm can reliably estimate the compressive strength. The findings indicate that the concrete formulated with WTCP and WBGNPs not only meets diverse construction demands but also significantly contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing impacts on global warming and minimizing landfill usage. This study advocates for the strategic incorporation of WTCP and WBGNPs in concrete applications to promote environmentally sustainable construction practices. It is highly recommended that WTCP be utilized in sustainable binders as a replacement for OPC and natural aggregates to enhance it strength and durable properties, reduce the environmental issues, costs, and the depletion of natural resources.

Abstract:In this work, we systematically examine several factors in an effort to maximise the strength of geopolymer concrete that includes recycled plastic. Geopolymer concrete specimens with varying amounts of plastic content, particle size distribution, alkaline activator concentration, mix design, additional materials, additives, and fibre properties were subjected to water absorption and compressive strength tests. Compressive strength was increased to 40 MPa, while water absorption was decreased to 1.5%, all as a consequence of raising the plastic content to 15%. In addition to the ideal concentration of 8 M sodium hydroxide and 3 wt% sodium silicate, the use of coarse plastic particles helped boost the material's mechanical qualities. The employment of a superplasticizer and fibre additives, in addition to the incorporation of silica fume, increased the strength and durability of geopolymer concrete. These results provide light on how to better incorporate waste plastic into the design and formulation of geopolymer concrete, a key ingredient in the development of environmentally friendly and functional building materials.
Using Recycled Concrete Powder, Waste Glass Powder, and Plastic Powder to Improve the Mechanical Properties of Compacted Concrete: Cement Elimination Approach

Abstract:The environment receives millions of tons of garbage, including plastic and glass, and concrete building debris contributes to a number of environmental problems. In order to reduce cement and make use of waste materials like glass and plastic, this research creates compacted concrete samples using waste glass powder, waste plastic powder, micro-silica, fly ash, and recycled powdered concrete. Compressive, nonlinear behavior, and SEM tests on compacted specimens showed that by removing 80% of the cement and substituting 20% recycled concrete powder, 15% micro-silica, 15% fly ash, 15% waste plastic powder, and 15% waste glass powder (at 80°C for 20 minutes), sustainable concrete with compressive and flexural strengths nearly equal to the sample's compressive and flexural strengths was produced. Micro-silica has several shortcomings regarding improving concrete strength and building a suitable combination with recycled concrete powder. In extremely small quantities, glass powder may be used to replace cement, and in greater quantities, it can take the place of aggregate. Finally, it was found that concrete mortar could be made completely sustainable by using recycled materials like glass, plastic, and recycled concrete, as well as micro-silica and fly ash, and that only 20% of the weight of cement could be used without lowering the compressive and flexural strength of the concrete.

Abstract:Grounded in the auspicious horizons of geological polymers as alternative replacements for Portland cement and aligned with the national endeavor of constructing an ecological civilization and harnessing solid waste as a resource, this study delves into the integration of nanostructured calcium carbonate (CaCO3) into geological polymers derived from fly ash and manganese slag. Employing a comprehensive methodology involving modalities, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, the influence of nano-CaCO3 on the compressive strength, pore architecture, and polymerization degree of geological polymers is meticulously unveiled. The outcomes reveal that nano-CaCO3 adeptly infiltrates the intricate microporous architecture of geological polymers, thereby providing a compact and intrinsically reinforcing matrix, ultimately endowing a marked increase in compressive strength. The assimilation of nano-CaCO3 correlates conspicuously with an increase in monomeric calcium concentrations, thereby catalyzing and expediting the formation of polymeric assemblages within the system, which in turn accelerates the progression of geological polymerization. This catalytic effect augments the intricate three-dimensional lattice-like gel structures, consequently orchestrating a substantial amelioration in mechanical attributes. When the dosage of nano-CaCO3 was 3.5%, sodium silicate was 10%, and NaOH was 12%, the integrated performance of fly ash–Mn slag geopolymer was optimal. Specifically, the 28-day compressive strength reached 25.6 MPa, and the compressive strength of the weathering performance test increased by 8.31%. The polymer achieved 96.77% curing of Mn, and it was non-radioactive. Thus, the prepared geopolymers are safe and reliable and support the subsequent development of nanomaterial activators.

Abstract:The subject of this paper is the influence of the partial substitution of cement with mineral additive on the properties of polymer–cement composites (PCCs). Although there is considerable research on the use of perlite in cement concrete, most of the previous studies were conducted with expanded perlite or ground waste perlite, and there is a lack of results evaluating its suitability with polymer–cement composites. To fill this gap, this paper presents the mechanical characteristic of PCC mortars containing waste perlite powder. The modification consisted of replacing part of the cement with waste perlite powder, a byproduct formed during the expansion and fractionation of perlite. The granulometric characteristics of the powder were compiled, and its specific surface area and density were determined. A chemical composition analysis was also carried out. An aqueous dispersion of styrene–acrylic copolymer was used as a polymer modifier. The proportions (by mass) between the contents of the PCC composite components, i.e., cement/polymer (0 to 20%) and cement/mineral powder (0 to 15%), were used as material variables. The technical characteristics tested included the compressive, flexural, and tensile strengths at 28 and 90 days of curing. The compositions of the tested composites were determined using the statistical planning of the experiment. At a low polymer-modifier content in PCC mortars (2.93%), the tested mechanical strengths decreased by five times, with a 6-fold increase in waste content. For mortars containing more than 10% of the polymer modifier, no effect of waste material powder on the flexural strength was observed, while with relatively minor reductions in compressive strength of 2% and 5% and tensile strength of 4% and 2% were observed after 28 and 90 days of curing, respectively. It was shown that it is possible to use waste perlite powder as an ingredient in construction polymer–cement composites, while there is a limiting waste content, above which there is a deterioration in mechanical properties.

Abstract:Concrete, an indispensable cornerstone of the construction industry, presents a formidable environmental challenge owing to the substantial carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions incurred during the production of cement. However, in light of the construction sector's vital economic and social contributions, it becomes imperative to harmonize it with environmental preservation. The concept of sustainability emerges as a paramount principle, addressing pressing issues such as the escalating depletion of non-renewable resources and the imperative need for resource conservation to secure a sustainable legacy for future generations. In this particular context, the prudent utilization of sustainable materials stands out as a pragmatic approach to ameliorate the adverse environmental impacts inherent in cementitious systems, while concurrently enhancing the structural strength and durability of constructions. The subject of this study is centered on the strategic incorporation of recycled concrete powder (RCP), marble powder (MP), glass powder (GP), and limestone powder (LP) as viable substitutes for traditional cement, at varying rates of 25%, 30%, and 35%, with the overarching goal of augmenting sustainability in construction practices. The outcomes of the experimental investigation unveiled significant insights. The inclusion of these waste powders yielded a noteworthy maximum reduction of 44% in compressive strength, albeit it necessitated a maximum increase of 16% in the application of admixtures. Nevertheless, a crucial advantage emerged in the substantial reduction, to the tune of 72%, in the deleterious alkali–silica reaction. Moreover, in terms of workability, while the control mixture experienced a 20% reduction in flow value after 60 min, mixtures infused with waste powders showcased a range of flow value reductions spanning from 23 to 40%. In summary, the study emphasizes that the replacement of conventional cement with waste powders, despite causing acceptable adverse effects on workability, admixture requirements, and strength properties, leads to significant enhancements in alkali-silica reaction resistance. This, in turn, bestows substantive benefits upon the overarching goal of sustainability enhancement within the construction industry.

Abstract:Polymeric materials in the construction sector, together with inorganic and organic waste, are of great interest. Polymeric concretes have been prepared using a vinylester resin as a matrix and a combination of mineral (slate and granite) and organic (olive pits and hemp fibres) fillers, with the aim of studying the compatibility and the optimal dosages between the components, minimizing the amount of resin used and maximizing the mineral and organic waste. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF) have been used for the morphological, chemical and mineralogical characterization of the components and samples; hardness, compressive strength and flexural strength tests have been used to determine the mechanical properties. The results allow the adjustment of densification and mechanical behaviour. This will contribute to the valorization of agricultural and quarry waste, reduce the impact on the environment and improve production costs.

Abstract:Polymer concrete (PC) has been used to replace cement concrete when harsh service conditions exist. Polymers have a high carbon footprint when considering their life cycle analysis, and with increased climate change concerns and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emission, bio-based polymers could be used as a sustainable alternative binder to produce PC. This paper examines the development and characterization of a novel bio-polymer concrete (BPC) using bio-based polyurethane used as the binder in lieu of cement, modified with benzoic acid and carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The mechanical performance, durability, microstructure, and chemical properties of BPC are investigated. Moreover, the effect of the addition of benzoic acid and MWCNTs on the properties of BPC is studied. The new BPC shows relatively low density, appreciable compressive strength between 20–30 MPa, good tensile strength of 4 MPa, and excellent durability resistance against aggressive environments. The new BPC has a low carbon footprint, 50% lower than ordinary Portland cement concrete, and can provide a sustainable concrete alternative in infrastructural applications.

Polymer Composites

Abstract:A brief presentation of study procedure and observed results. Polymer adhesives have considerable mechanical and environmental privileges; however, their high price makes them uncommercial for common uses. This study investigates the incorporation of recycled or byproduct fillers in epoxy resin‐based composites to assess their mechanical properties, environmental impacts, and cost efficiency. The fillers examined include fly ash, glass powder, slag, silica powder, and limestone powder. Tensile, compressive, and fracture tests were conducted on composites with various filler proportions (0%–80% by weight). From microstructure observations, round (fly ash, glass powder) and rough (slag, silica, and limestone powder) morphologies are seen. Also, it is seen that all the fillers are well distributed in the matrix; with the increase of filler content, the air voids increase. The tensile and compressive results indicate that adding fillers improves the composite's strengths, with up to a 20% increase compared to neat epoxy resin. However, when filler contents exceed 40%, the strengths decrease. Fracture toughness values also decrease with increasing filler content. Comparing the results with those of other studies indicates the similarity of trends. Cost‐strength and CO2eq‐strength curves were evaluated to assess the financial and environmental aspects. The composites show potential for cost efficiency but may have some environmental drawbacks compared to traditional construction materials like cement concrete. Abstract:An effort is being conducted to enhance some characteristics of self-compacted concrete (SCC) and clean the environment through the addition of waste plastic fibers resulting from the cuts of waste medical radiology. A number of tests were carried out to examine the impact of waste medical radiology (WMR) fiber additions with various aspect ratios and various percentages on SCC characteristics. Thus, various SCC mixes were designed at a constant water-to-binder ratio of 0.33 and 550 kg/m3 of binder content. The four groups of WMR fiber content were specified with different aspect ratios of (0, 40, 50, and 60) with various ratios of (1%, 1.25, and 1.5%) by volume of concrete. The workability characteristics of SCC mixes were determined by fresh density, segregation resistance, L-box height ratio, T50 slump with V-funnel flow time, and slump flow diameter. Also, the measurement of thermal conductivity, compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strengths were performed at 28 days for SCC mixtures. The findings revealed that WMR fibers have a negative impact on the fresh characteristics of SCC except for segregation resistance, which improved. However, the results of splitting tensile and compressive strengths were enhanced at 1% WMR fiber content with various aspect ratios then decreased. However, all results of flexural strength were reduced in comparison with the control mixture excluding samples containing 1% WMR fibers with an aspect ratio of 50 which showed a higher result. The outcomes of thermal conductivity were reduced with the usage of various WMR fiber percentages and various aspect ratios in comparison with the control mixture, and the best result was obtained at 1.25% WMR fiber with an aspect ratio of 50.Graphical abstract

Abstract:The size and complex nature of today's construction project resulted in a global increase of the carbon footprint. Increased carbon dioxide emissions results in a severe deterioration to the environment and negative health implications. Recent studies showed that the production of 1 metric ton of portland cement results in the evolution of 0.9 metric tons of carbon dioxide. At this rate, the construction industry represents a significant threat on mankind. This paper presents geopolymer (cement-free) concrete applications in the United States local construction market. Geopolymer concrete production depends on the activation of a pozzolanic supplementary cementitious material (SCM) with a high aluminosilicate content using alkaline solution as sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The SCM activated material-known as precursor-forms a three-dimensional polymer that binds the aggregates instead of hydrated portland cement. The widespread of geopolymer concrete will significantly reduce the need to portland cement; hence, reduces the carbon emissions resulting from cement production. In addition to the environmental advantages, geopolymer concrete is highly durable due to the fine size of SCMs particles. Geopolymer concrete is more resistant to alkali-silica reactivity, and early age cracking. The widespread of geopolymer concrete in construction industry, especially in infrastructure projects, will result in significant improvement in projects condition, and lower the need to frequent maintenance, repair, and replacement of projects.

Abstract:A viable strategy for promoting sustainable development and a cleaner environment is the reuse of demolition-related ceramic waste and ceramic manufacturing byproducts in the production of concrete. The purpose of this study is to assess the possibilities for using ceramic waste in the production of concrete as a fine aggregate and cementitious material. The effectiveness of concrete mixtures incorporating 20–100% ceramic waste fine (CWF) as a replacement for natural fine aggregate and 10–30% ceramic waste powder (CWP) in place of cement was evaluated. Their influence was assessed with respect to workability, mechanical performance, durability, and elevated temperature resistance. The results were analyzed via energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The findings illustrated that the increase in the replacement levels of CWP and CWF decreases the concrete workability. The mechanical performance of concrete mixtures is enhanced under compression and flexural tests as the replacement ratios of CWF and CWP increase up to 50% and 10% as replacements of sand and cement, respectively. The increases in compressive and flexural strength were 5.33% and 8.14%, respectively, at age 28 days. The concrete water permeability significantly increases as the CWF replacement ratio increases, and the incorporation of CWP reduces this negative impact. After exposure to 200, 400, 600, and 800 °C, the residual compressive strengths of concrete mixtures incorporating CWF and CWP were up to 95.02%, 89.66%, 74.33%, and 51.34%, respectively, compared to control mixtures, which achieved 84.25%, 76.03%, 59.36%, and 35.84% of their initial strength. Microstructure analysis revealed that combining CWP and CWF significantly improves cement hydration when compared to the reference mixture. Thus, the use of CWF and CWP in the production of masonry mortar might be an economical alternative that would aid in raising the recycling rate of demolition and construction debris and supporting sustainable growth in the building sector.
