Abstract:This assay was aimed to evaluate the influence of different contact ways and extracting conditions on the hemolytic effect of biomaterials. Using direct contact method and extract contact method, we assessed the hemolytic effect of PDLLA and PVC. The extracting conditions included: 37 degrees C 24 h, 37 degrees C 72 h, 37 degrees C 120 h, 50 degrees C 72 h, and 70 degrees C 24 h. After the material or extract had been in contact with the diluted blood of rabbit for certain times, the hemolysis rate was calculated. The results for PDLLA showed there were some differences between direct contact and extract contact at 37 degrees C for different extraction time (P < 0.05), but the hemolysis rates, lower than 5%, were in accord with the requirements of medical devices. However, under the condition of 50 degrees C and 70 degrees C, there were significant differences when extract contact method was compared with direct method (P < 0.01). For PVC, there was no statistically significant difference under all conditions (P > 0.05). Our conclusions: (1) Under the extracting condition of 37 degrees C from 24 h to 120 h, the soluble part of PDLLA and PVC that might influence erythrocyte did not dissolve considerably. (2) Under the extracting condition of 50 degrees C and 70 degrees C, the hemolysis rate may remarkably vary with the chemical characteristics of tested materials; (3) As to an unknown material, it is advisable to adopt two methods at the same time, one for direct contact and the other for extracontact. Thus the hemolytic effect of biomaterials can be evaluated from physical and chemical angles. (4) In case that the chemical property of the sample can endure the test, the extracting condition at 50 degrees C and 70 degrees C may be of benefit to assessing the hemolytic effect of biomaterials. (5) The extract contact method as a supplemental test of direct contact method is of realistic significance.

Abstract:Remote health assessments that gather real-world data (RWD) outside clinic settings require a clear understanding of appropriate methods for data collection, quality assessment, analysis and interpretation. Here we examine the performance and limitations of smartphones in collecting RWD in the remote mPower observational study of Parkinson's disease (PD). Within the first 6 months of study commencement, 960 participants had enrolled and performed at least five self-administered active PD symptom assessments (speeded tapping, gait/balance, phonation or memory). Task performance, especially speeded tapping, was predictive of self-reported PD status (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) = 0.8) and correlated with in-clinic evaluation of disease severity (r = 0.71; P < 1.8 × 10−6) when compared with motor Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS). Although remote assessment requires careful consideration for accurate interpretation of RWD, our results support the use of smartphones and wearables in objective and personalized disease assessments.

Abstract:Introduction: Digital health technologies (DHTs) have the potential to alleviate challenges experienced in clinical trials through more objective, naturalistic, and frequent assessments of functioning. However, implementation of DHTs come with their own challenges, including acceptability and ease of use for study participants. In addition to acceptability, it is also important to understand device proficiency in the general population and within patient populations who may be asked to use DHTs for extended periods of time. We thus aimed to provide an overview of participant feedback on acceptability of DHTs, including body-worn sensors used in the clinic and a mobile application used at-home, used throughout the duration of the Wearable Assessments in the Clinic and at Home in Parkinson's Disease (WATCH-PD) study, an observational, longitudinal study looking at disease progression in early Parkinson's Disease (PD). Methods: 82 participants with PD and 50 control participants were enrolled at 17 sites throughout the United States and followed for 12 months. We assessed participants' general device proficiency at baseline, using the Mobile Device Proficiency Questionnaire (MDPQ). The mean MDPQ score at Baseline did not significantly differ between PD patients and healthy controls (20.6 [2.91] vs 21.5 [2.94], p = .10). Results: Questionnaire results demonstrated that participants had generally positive views on the comfort and use of the digital technologies throughout the duration of the study, regardless of group. Discussion: This is the first study to evaluate patient feedback and impressions of using technology in a longitudinal observational study in early Parkinson's Disease. Results demonstrate device proficiency and acceptability of various DHTs in people with Parkinson's does not differ from that of neurologically healthy older adults, and, overall, participants had a favorable view of the DHTs deployed in the WATCH-PD study.

Abstract:Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by a variety of motor and non-motor symptoms. As disease progresses, fluctuations in the response to levodopa treatment may develop, along with emergence of freezing of gait (FoG) and levodopa induced dyskinesia (LiD). The optimal management of the motor symptoms and their complications, depends, principally, on the consistent detection of their course, leading to improved treatment decisions. During the last few years, wearable devices have started to be used in the clinical practice for monitoring patients' PD-related motor symptoms, during their daily activities. This work describes the results of 2 multi-site clinical studies (PDNST001 and PDNST002) designed to validate the performance and the wearability of a new wearable monitoring device, the PDMonitor ® , in the detection of PD-related motor symptoms. For the studies, 65 patients with Parkinson's disease and 28 healthy individuals (controls) were recruited. Specifically, during the Phase I of the first study, participants used the monitoring device for 2–6 h in a clinic while neurologists assessed the exhibited parkinsonian symptoms every half hour using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) Part III, as well as the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) for dyskinesia severity assessment. The goal of Phase I was data gathering. On the other hand, during the Phase II of the first study, as well as during the second study (PDNST002), day-to-day variability was evaluated, with patients in the former and with control subjects in the latter. In both cases, the device was used for a number of days, with the subjects being unsupervised and free to perform any kind of daily activities. The monitoring device produced estimations of the severity of the majority of PD-related motor symptoms and their fluctuations. Statistical analysis demonstrated that the accuracy in the detection of symptoms and the correlation between their severity and the expert evaluations were high. As a result, the studies confirmed the effectiveness of the system as a continuous telemonitoring solution, easy to be used to facilitate decision-making for the treatment of patients with Parkinson's disease.

Abstract:Movement deterioration is the hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD), characterized by levodopa-induced motor-fluctuations (i.e., symptoms' variability related to the medication cycle) in advanced stages. However, motor symptoms are typically too sporadically and/or subjectively assessed, ultimately preventing the effective monitoring of their progression, and thus leading to suboptimal treatment/therapeutic choices. Smartwatches (SW) enable a quantitative-oriented approach to motor-symptoms evaluation, namely home-based monitoring (HBM) using an embedded inertial measurement unit. Studies validated such approach against in-clinic evaluations. In this work, we aimed at delineating personalized motor-fluctuations' profiles, thus capturing individual differences. 21 advanced PD patients with motor fluctuations were monitored for 2 weeks using a SW and a smartphone-dedicated app (Intel Pharma Analytics Platform). The SW continuously collected passive data (tremor, dyskinesia, level of activity using dedicated algorithms) and active data, i.e., time-up-and-go, finger tapping, hand tremor and hand rotation carried out daily, once in OFF and once in ON levodopa periods. We observed overall high compliance with the protocol. Furthermore, we observed striking differences among the individual patterns of symptoms' levodopa-related variations across the HBM, allowing to divide our participants among four data-driven, motor-fluctuations' profiles. This highlights the potential of HBM using SW technology for revolutionizing clinical practices.

Abstract:Parkinson's disease is a degenerative neurological disorder that impairs motor functions and is accompanied by a wide range of non-motor symptoms, such as sleep problems. Parkinsonism is assessed during clinical evaluations and via self-administered diaries and, based on these, the required medication therapies are provided to lessen symptoms. Tri-axial accelerometers and gyroscopes have the potential utility to objectively assess the patient's condition and aid clinicians in their decision-making. People with Parkinson's often have significant abnormalities in blood pressure due to comorbid age-related cardiovascular disease and orthostatic hypotension, which result in blurred vision, dizziness, and falls. Frequent blood pressure monitoring may aid in the evaluation of such events and differentiate Parkinson's disease symptoms from those originated by hypotension. In the present paper, a novel technology for the remote monitoring of Parkinsonian symptoms is presented: the WESAA system. It consists of two devices, worn on the wrist and ankle; its main function is to record accelerations and angular velocities from these body parts, together with photoplethysmograph and electrocardiogram data. This information can be elaborated offline to measure common Parkinson's disease motor symptoms (e.g., tremor, bradykinesia, and dyskinesia), as well as gait speed, sleep-wake cycles, and cuff-less blood pressure measurements. The overall system requirements, market overview, industrial design and ergonomics, system development, user experience, early results of the gathered inertial raw data, and validation of the photoplethysmograph and electrocardiogram signal waveforms are all thoroughly discussed. The developed technology satisfies all system requirements, and the sensors adopted provided outcomes comparable with gold standard techniques.

Abstract:Digital health tools are emerging as a promising solution for optimizing Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's Disease (PD), addressing challenges of therapy maintenance, care access, and discrete assessments. Wearable technology and mobile health platforms can offer remote monitoring capabilities, allowing for real-time virtual programming with optimization of patients' therapy, use of digital biomarkers that can help identify the onset, symptoms, medication-related fluctuations and side-effects, and response to DBS treatment. Through an investigational remote monitoring application (RM app) integrating patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and objective data using wearables, we aimed to develop an accessible, data-driven digital tool to monitor patient symptoms and deliver low-burden and easy-to-access DBS therapy. The platform is designed to be compatible with several consumer-grade wearables and ensures patient data privacy and security. We conducted a feasibility study to test the tool's effectiveness in a large-scale DBS study, where subjects received a home-monitoring kit consisting of an iPhone and Apple Watch, pre-configured with the RM app to enable remote data collection. Compliance in this paper is defined as adherence to the RM app and Apple watch usage. Analysis of 67 subjects from the study demonstrated an average compliance rate of 63.3% for daily check-ins, 85.5% for monthly surveys and 61.9% for passive data with an average of 55 days of post-implant data. The study highlights the feasibility of frequent monitoring in the early post-implant period that could lead to optimal outcomes for patients. The platform developed can further optimize study execution and be extended to other chronic conditions treated with neuromodulation implants such as depression and pain.

Abstract:Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder commonly characterized by motor impairments. The development of mobile health (m-health) technologies, such as wearable and smart devices, presents an opportunity for the implementation of clinical tools that can support tasks such as early diagnosis and objective quantification of symptoms. Objective: This study evaluates a framework to monitor motor symptoms of PD patients based on the performance of standardized exercises such as those performed during clinic evaluation. To implement this framework, an m-health tool named Monipar was developed that uses off-the-shelf smart devices. Methods: An experimental protocol was conducted with the participation of 21 early-stage PD patients and 7 healthy controls who used Monipar installed in off-the-shelf smartwatches and smartphones. Movement data collected using the built-in acceleration sensors were used to extract relevant digital indicators (features). These indicators were then compared with clinical evaluations performed using the MDS-UPDRS scale. Results: The results showed moderate to strong (significant) correlations between the clinical evaluations (MDS-UPDRS scale) and features extracted from the movement data used to assess resting tremor (i.e., the standard deviation of the time series: r = 0.772, p < 0.001) and data from the pronation and supination movements (i.e., power in the band of 1-4 Hz: r = -0.662, p < 0.001). Conclusion: These results suggest that the proposed framework could be used as a complementary tool for the evaluation of motor symptoms in early-stage PD patients, providing a feasible and cost-effective solution for remote and ambulatory monitoring of specific motor symptoms such as resting tremor or bradykinesia.
MoveONParkinson: developing a personalized motivational solution for Parkinson's disease management

Abstract:Introduction: Despite the effectiveness of exercise-based interventions on symptom management and disease progression, many people with Parkinson's Disease (PwPD) do not exercise regularly. In line with the ubiquitous use of digital health technology, the MoveONParkinson digital solution was developed, comprising a Web Platform and a Mobile App with a Conversational Agent (CA). The interface features were designed based on the principles of Social Cognitive Theory with the goal of fostering behavior change in PwPD for sustained exercise participation and improved disease management. Methods: Using a mixed methods approach, this study aimed to collect feedback, assess the acceptability of the Mobile App and the Web Platform, and evaluate the usability of the latter. Quantitative data, which included questionnaire responses and the System Usability Scale (SUS) scores, were analyzed using descriptive statistics, heatmaps, and correlation matrices. Qualitative data, comprising semi-structured and thinking-aloud interview transcripts, were subjected to an inductive thematic analysis. A total of 28 participants were involved in the study, comprising 20 physiotherapists (average age: 34.50 ± 10.4), and eight PwPD (average age: 65.75 ± 8.63; mean Hoehn & Yahr: 2.0 (± 0.76)). Results: Three main themes emerged from the thematic analysis of the interviews, namely: Self-management (Theme 1), User Engagement (Theme 2), and Recommendations (Theme 3). The assessment of the Mobile App and the CA (mean score: 4.42/5.0 ± 0.79) suggests that PwPD were able to navigate this interface without notable difficulties. The mean SUS score of 79.50 (± 12.40%) with a 95% confidence interval ranging from 73.70 to 85.30, reveal good usability. Discussion: These findings indicate a high level of acceptability of the MoveONParkinson digital solution, serving as a foundation for assessing its impact on exercise engagement and, subsequently, its influence on symptom management and quality of life of PwPD.

Abstract:Introduction: Conventional care in Parkinson's disease (PD) faces limitations due to the significant time and location commitments needed for regular assessments, lacking quantitative measurements. Telemonitoring offers clinicians an opportunity to evaluate patient symptomatology throughout the day during activities of daily living. Methods: The progression of PD symptoms over a two-year period was investigated in patients undergoing traditional evaluation, supplemented by insights from ambulatory measurements. Physicians integrated a telemonitoring device, the PDMonitor ® , into daily practice, using it for informed medication adjustments. Results: Statistical analyses examining intra-subject changes for 17 subjects revealed a significant relative decrease of −43.9% in the device-reported percentage of time spent in "OFF" state (from 36.2 to 20.3%). Following the 24-month period, the majority of the subjects improved or exhibited stable symptom manifestation. In addition to positively impacting motor symptom control, telemonitoring was found to enhance patient satisfaction about their condition, medication effectiveness, and communication with physicians. Discussion: Considering that motor function is significantly worsened over time in patients with PD, these findings suggest a positive impact of objective telemonitoring on symptoms control. Patient satisfaction regarding disease management through telemonitoring can potentially improve adherence to treatment plans. In conclusion, remote continuous monitoring paves the way for a paradigm shift in PD, focusing on actively managing and potentially improve symptoms control.

Abstract:Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) can be controlled well, but treatment often requires expert judgment. Telemedicine and sensor-based assessments can allow physicians to better observe the evolvement of symptoms over time, in particular with motor fluctuations. In addition, they potentially allow less frequent visits to the expert’s office and facilitate care in rural areas. A variety of systems with different strengths and shortcomings has been investigated in recent years. We designed a multimodal telehealth intervention (TelePark) to mitigate the shortcomings of individual systems and assessed the feasibility of our approach in 12 patients with PD over 12 weeks in preparation for a larger randomized controlled trial. TelePark uses video visits, a smartphone app, a camera system, and wearable sensors. Structured training included setting up the equipment in patients’ homes and group-based online training. Usability was assessed by questionnaires and semi-standardized telephone interviews. Overall, 11 out of 12 patients completed the trial (5 female, 6 male). Mean age was 65 years, mean disease duration 7 years, mean MoCA score 27. Adherence was stable throughout the study and 79% for a short questionnaire administered every second day, 62% for medication confirmation, and 33% for an electronic Hauser diary. Quality of life did not change in the course of the study, and a larger cohort will be required to determine the effect on motor symptoms. Interviews with trial participants identified motivations to use such systems and areas for improvements. These insights can be helpful in designing similar trials.

Abstract:<span>To explore physiotherapists' views on the usability of feedback-based technologies used in physical rehabilitation.A mixed methods study which was nested within a randomised controlled trial to investigate the effectiveness of affordable feedback-based technologies to improve mobility and physical activity within aged care and neurological rehabilitation. Technologies included virtual reality systems, handheld device apps and wearable devices. Physiotherapists (<i>n</i> = 11) who were involved in prescribing technologies during the trial rated the usability of 11 different devices using the System Usability Scale (SUS), then attended a focus group. Descriptive statistics and framework analysis were used for analysis.Fitbit devices (mean 89.8, SD 9.3), Fysiogaming (mean 75.6, SD 15.3) and Xbox Kinect (mean 75.5, SD 11.2) rated in the acceptable range (>70) on the SUS. Three key factors on usability emerged from the focus groups: (1) Key device features relating to practicalities (ease of set up and use, reliability, safety) and therapeutic benefit (customisation, high active practice time, useful feedback) are important for usability; (2) Usability depends on the context of use; and (3) Usability can be enhanced with technical, clinical, environmental and financial support.Health service managers and clinicians should consider key device features identified, contextual factors of their service, and supports available when selecting technologies for use in clinical practice. Further collaboration between clinicians, researchers and technology developers would benefit future technology development, particularly taking into consideration the identified key device features from this study.Technology selection should be based on key device features relating to both practicalities and therapeutic benefit.Contextual factors and available supports should also be considered when selecting technologies.Key usability features identified in this study such as ease of set up, reliability and customisability should be considered in the design of future feedback-based technologies to optimise usability in physical rehabilitation.</span>

In our previous work, we introduced a generic remote patient monitoring framework (Sensing At-Risk Population) that draws on the classification of human movements using a 3-axial accelerometer and the extraction of indoor localization using Bluetooth low energy beacons, in concert. Using the same framework, this paper addresses the longitudinal analyses of a group of patients in a skilled nursing facility. We try to investigate if the metrics derived from a remote patient monitoring system comprised of physical activity and indoor localization sensors, as well as their association with therapist assessments, provide additional insight into the recovery process of patients receiving rehabilitation. Objective: The aim of this paper is twofold: (1) to observe longitudinal changes of sensor-based physical activity and indoor localization features of patients receiving rehabilitation at a skilled nursing facility and (2) to investigate if the sensor-based longitudinal changes can complement patients' changes captured by therapist assessments over the course of rehabilitation in the skilled nursing facility. Methods: From June 2016 to November 2017, patients were recruited after admission to a subacute rehabilitation center in Los Angeles, CA. Longitudinal cohort study of patients at a skilled nursing facility was followed over the course of 21 days. At the time of discharge from the skilled nursing facility, the patients were either readmitted to the hospital for continued care or discharged to a community setting. A longitudinal study of the physical therapy, occupational therapy, and sensor-based data assessments was performed. A generalized linear mixed model was used to find associations between functional measures with sensor-based features. Occupational therapy and physical therapy assessments were performed at the time of admission and once a week during the skilled nursing facility admission. Results: Of the 110 individuals in the analytic sample with mean age of 79.4 (SD 5.9) years, 79 (72%) were female and 31 (28%) were male participants. The energy intensity of an individual while in the therapy area was positively associated with transfer activities (β=.22; SE 0.08; P=.02). Sitting energy intensity showed positive association with transfer activities (β=.16; SE 0.07; P=.02). Lying down energy intensity was negatively associated with hygiene activities (β=-.27; SE 0.14; P=.04). The interaction of sitting energy intensity with time (β=-.13; SE 0.06; P=.04) was associated with toileting activities. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that a combination of indoor localization and physical activity tracking produces a series of features, a subset of which can provide crucial information to the story line of daily and longitudinal activity patterns of patients receiving rehabilitation at a skilled nursing facility. The findings suggest that detecting physical activity changes within locations may offer some insight into better characterizing patients' progress or decline.
Attitudes Toward the Adoption of Remote Patient Monitoring and Artificial Intelligence in Parkinson's Disease Management: Perspectives of Patients and Neurologists

Abstract:Objective: Early detection of Parkinson's Disease (PD) progression remains a challenge. As remote patient monitoring solutions (RMS) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies emerge as potential aids for PD management, there's a gap in understanding how end users view these technologies. This research explores patient and neurologist perspectives on AI-assisted RMS. Methods: Qualitative interviews and focus-groups were conducted with 27 persons with PD (PwPD) and six neurologists from Finland and Italy. The discussions covered traditional disease progression detection and the prospects of integrating AI and RMS. Sessions were recorded, transcribed, and underwent thematic analysis. Results: The study involved five individual interviews (four Italian participants and one Finnish) and six focus-groups (four Finnish and two Italian) with PwPD. Additionally, six neurologists (three from each country) were interviewed. Both cohorts voiced frustration with current monitoring methods due to their limited real-time detection capabilities. However, there was enthusiasm for AI-assisted RMS, contingent upon its value addition, user-friendliness, and preservation of the doctor-patient bond. While some PwPD had privacy and trust concerns, the anticipated advantages in symptom regulation seemed to outweigh these apprehensions. Discussion: The study reveals a willingness among PwPD and neurologists to integrate RMS and AI into PD management. Widespread adoption requires these technologies to provide tangible clinical benefits, remain user-friendly, and uphold trust within the physician-patient relationship. Conclusion: This study offers insights into the potential drivers and barriers for adopting AI-assisted RMS in PD care. Recognizing these factors is pivotal for the successful integration of these digital health tools in PD management.

Background:Fatigue after acquired brain injury (ABI) leads to detrimental changes in ABI survivors' daily activities and participation. There is a need to capture individual's experience of fatigue as it happens, to better support self-management of fatigue.Study aims:To investigate the usability of a real-time tracker of fatigue and activity (using ecological momentary assessment delivered by a smartphone application) and the feasibility of capturing activity and environmental factors using phone sensors.Methods:Participants wore an activity monitor and completed up to eight surveys a day on a smartphone app, for 6 days, completed the system usability scale (SUS) and were interviewed on their views of using the app. Interview transcripts were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Agreement between data from the phone's sensors and the activity monitor was analysed using Kappa statistics.Results:Seven participants completed between 11 and 58 surveys. Mean score on the SUS indicated good perceived usability of the app. Phone sensors did not reliably capture physical activity or background noise. Participants found the app easy to use and perceived self-monitoring to help their understanding of fatigue. A fatigue-tracking app may be acceptable to ABI survivors and has potential to aid self-management of fatigue.

Abstract:Background: Assessment scales for motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) lack the sensitivity and resolution to monitor symptoms over time. Wearable sensors in people with PD have shown potential to assess motor symptoms. The DIGI.PARK study explores the use of consumer- and research-grade wearables such as Fitbit Sense (FS), Oura ring (OR) and Empatica E4 (EM) to track behavioral patterns and symptoms of PD over time. Method: The DIGI.PARK pilot study (12.2021 to 12.2022) included N = 30 participants living in Bergen, Norway (N=15 persons with PD and N=15 controls). Outcome measures: self-reported diary of symptoms and behavior combined with data streams from three wearable devices (FS, OR, EM). Data was collected over 2 weeks: continuously by devices, and diary data every second day consisting of activities, sleep, medication timing (PD) and symptom occurrence (PD). The device data were segmented into 24-hour epochs. Heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), acceleration, blood volume pulse (BVP), inter-beat interval (IBI), electrodermal activity, metabolic equivalent of task (MET) and hypnogram were visualized as time series. The resulting graphs were annotated with the reported diary data and a manual checking procedure was applied to determine the correlation between sensor outputs and the logged instances of activity, sleep and symptoms. Results: Self-reported behavior was discernable in the measurements of HR, EDA, BVP, HRV, acceleration, MET and hypnogram. We found considerable differences in device outputs regarding data type, data size, resolution, and periods of active measurements. Tremor symptoms were observable in the raw data provided by EM when worn on the affected hand. Behavioral patterns such as sleep, waking and physical activities were illustrated using aggregated data. Conclusion: Sensor congruence with diary data support their usefulness for long term monitoring of behavioral patterns and symptoms in PD. For PD research, output from consumer- and research-grade devices have both shown usefulness. The choice of device should be tailored to the purpose and be mindful of the specific strengths and weaknesses of different device types. Aggregated data allow for monitoring behavioral patterns over time, whereas raw data provided the resolution to discern symptoms.

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study is to develop a smartphone-based high-frequency remote monitoring platform, assess its feasibility for remote monitoring of symptoms in Parkinson's disease, and demonstrate the value of data collected using the platform by detecting dopaminergic medication response. Methods: We have developed HopkinsPD, a novel smartphone-based monitoring platform, which measures symptoms actively (i.e. data are collected when a suite of tests is initiated by the individual at specific times during the day), and passively (i.e. data are collected continuously in the background). After data collection, we extract features to assess measures of five key behaviors related to PD symptoms -- voice, balance, gait, dexterity, and reaction time. A random forest classifier is used to discriminate measurements taken after a dose of medication (treatment) versus before the medication dose (baseline). Results: A worldwide study for remote PD monitoring was established using HopkinsPD in July, 2014. This study used entirely remote, online recruitment and installation, demonstrating highly cost-effective scalability. In six months, 226 individuals (121 PD and 105 controls) contributed over 46,000 hours of passive monitoring data and approximately 8,000 instances of structured tests of voice, balance, gait, reaction, and dexterity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to have collected data at such a scale for remote PD monitoring. Moreover, we demonstrate the initial ability to discriminate treatment from baseline with 71.0(+-0.4)% accuracy, which suggests medication response can be monitored remotely via smartphone-based measures.
