Abstract:The purposes of this study were to measure the concentrations of arsenic speciation in shellfish from South China Sea and evaluate the health risk by local residents through shellfish consumption. The median concentrations (in wet weight) of arsenic speciation in shellfish samples were in the following order: AsB (16.0 mg·kg−1) > DMA (1.30 mg·kg−1) > AsV (0.23 mg·kg−1) > AsC (0.08 mg·kg−1) > AsIII (0.05 mg·kg−1) > MMA (0.01 mg·kg−1). Among shellfish species, Mactra mera and Babylonia areolata were found to accumulate iAs and AsB, respectively. The target hazard quotient values of iAs (THQiAs) in all shellfish samples were lower than 1. However, the carcinogenic risk values of iAs (CRiAs) in the Mactra mera, Mytilus galloprovincialis and Pinctada margaritifera were beyond the acceptable range, implying that continuous exposure to iAs pollution via the consumption of these shellfish would pose a potential cancer risk to local consumers.

Abstract:Since humans are especially sensitive to arsenic exposure, predominantly through diet, a strict control of the most widely consumed seaweeds is mandatory. Total arsenic contents and arsenic species in twenty-five different seaweeds from five different origins were studied. Seaweeds selected, included Phaeophyta (brown seaweed), Chlorophyta (green seaweed) and Rhodophyta (red seaweed) genera. The highest arsenic content appears in the Phaeophyta seaweed in the range from 11 to 162 mg kg −1 dried weight. Arsenosugars were found to be the predominant species of arsenic in most seaweeds, being up to 99.7% of total arsenic in some samples. The arsenic dietary intakes for seaweeds studied were assessed and the Target Hazard Quotients (THQ) and the Target Cancer Risk (TCR) were calculated, taking into account inorganic arsenic contents (iAs). iAs species in seaweeds showed low risk of arsenic intake except for Hizikia fusiforme samples.

Abstract:Seaweed, a popular seafood in South Korea, has abundant dietary fiber and minerals. The toxicity of arsenic compounds is known to be related to their chemical speciation, and inorganic arsenic (iAs) is more detrimental than other species. Due to the different toxicities of the various chemical forms, speciation analysis is important for evaluating arsenic exposure. In this study, total arsenic (tAs) and six arsenic species (arsenite, arsenate, monomethylarsonic acid, dimethylarsinic acid, arsenobetaine, and arsenocholine) were analyzed in 180 seaweed samples. Although there were differences between seaweed species, the concentration of tAs was detected at levels ranging from 1 to 100 μg/g, and the distribution of six arsenic species differed depending on the seaweed species. No correlation between the concentration of iAs and tAs was found in most seaweed species. Through statistical clustering, hijiki and gulfweed were seen to be the seaweeds with the highest ratios of iAs to tAs. Using the iAs concentration data from the arsenic speciation analysis, a risk assessment of seaweed intake in South Korea was conducted. The margin of exposure values showed no meaningful risk for the general population, but low levels of risk were identified for seaweed consumers, with high intakes of gulfweed and hijiki.
Toxic arsenic in marketed aquatic products from coastal cities in China: Occurrence, human dietary exposure risk, and coexposure risk with mercury and selenium

Abstract:To improve the accuracy of dietary risk assessment of arsenic (As) from aquatic products, toxic As species (As(III), As(V), monomethylarsonic acid [MMA], and dimethylarsinic acid [DMA]) and total As were analyzed in 124 marketed aquatic products from eight coastal cities in China. Distribution characteristics of Toxic As (the sum of the four toxic As species) in the samples and associated risk of human dietary exposure were emphatically investigated. The impact of cooccurrence of As and other chemical elements in the aquatic products was assessed based on our former results of mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se). Toxic As contents (maximum value 0.358 mg kg-1 wet weight) in the samples accounted for at most 14.1% of total As. DMA was the major component (mean proportion 50.8% for shellfish, 100% for fish) of Toxic As in aquatic products. Shellfish contained more Toxic As than fish did. Mean estimated daily intakes of Toxic As for the residents with aquatic product consumption rates of 46.1-235 g day-1 ranged from 0.034 to 0.290 μg kg-1 day-1. Potential health risk was indicated among those who greatly consumed aquatic products, as their target hazard quotient (THQ) and target cancer risk (TR) values exceeded safety thresholds (1 for THQ, 10-4 for TR). DMA and MMA exposure contributed to 3.42-7.72% of the THQToxic As. Positive correlations between concentrations of As and Hg (Fish: r = 0.47, p < 0.01; Shellfish: r = 0.60, p < 0.01), as well as between that of As and Se (Fish: r = 0.69, p < 0.01; Shellfish: r = 0.37, p < 0.01) were found in the samples. It requires attentions urgently that As and Hg coexposure through aquatic product consumption rose the sum THQ of Toxic As and methylmercury (MeHg) to approximately two to eight times as high as the THQToxic As.

Abstract:This study compared the ability of Sargassum fusiforme to accumulate As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in its five tissues (main branch, lateral branch, leaf, receptacles and pneumathode). The concentrations of these trace elements in seawater, surface sediments and different tissues of S. fusiforme were analyzed in different areas in Dongtong County (Wenzhou City, China). The presence of receptacle at all sites indicated that S. fusiforme had entered the mature stage. However, the proportion of each tissue in S. fusiforme in different sites was varied, indicating subtle differences in growth. S. fusiforme has a great capacity to accumulate trace elements, showing relatively high levels of As (28.2-64.2 mg kg-1) and Zn (19.9-80.8 mg kg-1). The elements are mainly stored in leaf, receptacles and pneumathode. Compared to element concentrations in the surrounding environment, the seaweed exhibited stronger bioconcentration capacity for As and Cd than for other elements. According to our health risk assessment results, the hazard index and carcinogenic risk were below the limit, suggesting that the S. fusiforme ingestion would not pose any health risk and the potential risk of intake branches was even lower than that of other tissues.

Abstract:China has been the major fishery producer in the Northwest Pacific Ocean for decades and the seafood safety deserves continuous concern. In this study, 188 organism and 27 sediment samples were collected from the Jiaozhou Bay, a typical semi-enclosed bay adjacent to the Northwest Pacific Ocean, to study the arsenic (As) pollution level and trophodynamics in the coastal regions of China combined with a meta-analysis. Results showed that arsenic was the most abundant in crustaceans with the average of 28.84 ± 4.95 mg/kg in dry weight, in comparison with molluscs (18.68 ± 2.51 mg/kg) and fish (9.31 ± 1.45 mg/kg). Additionally, based on a meta-analysis, arsenic in coastal organisms generally decreased from north to south in China. With increasing values of δ15N, arsenic was significantly biomagnified in the molluscs but bio-diluted in the groups of crustaceans and fish. When all the species were taken into consideration, overall bio-dilution of As was observed through the simplified food chain in the Jiaozhou Bay. Based on the target hazard quotient (THQ), the health risk of consuming seafood from the Jiaozhou Bay was not significant except for several kinds of crustaceans. The smaller THQs indicated lower health risk of eating molluscs and fish than crustaceans. Besides, urban households tended to undertake much higher risk than rural households. Based on our results, it is recommended for urban citizens to reduce the frequency of consuming crustaceans and give preference to fish when choosing seafood.

A survey of arsenic species in Chinese seafood.

Abstract:In the present report, thirty different types of Chinese edible seafood, including brown algae, red algae, fish, crab, shrimp, mussels, oysters, and clams, which are very popular foodstuffs in the Chinese kitchen, were examined for their total content of As as well as its different species. Total arsenic concentration in algae samples was 1.7-38.7 microg/g (dry weight), and 0.086-7.54 microg/g in fish and shellfish (wet weight), respectively. The arsenic species in seafood extracts were determined by using anion and cation exchange high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). Arsenosugars were detected in all of the extracted algae samples (1.5-33.8 microg/g dry weight) and fish samples (0.018-0.78 microg/g wet weight). Arsenobetaine was detected in all of the extracted fish and shellfish samples (0.025-6.604 microg/g wet weight). In contrast, inorganic arsenic in fish and shellfish samples occurred at levels below 2% of the total arsenic. No inorganic arsenic was detected in the algae samples. This study provides information about the distribution pattern of arsenic species in seafood products. Since the major share of arsenic components in seafood is organic arsenic with a low toxicity, we can conclude that arsenic in seafood does not pose any risk to human health.

Abstract:Bioenrichment preference of arsenic and metals in wild marine organisms has been scarcely considered. Twenty species including fishes, cephalopods, crustaceans, and bivalve mollusks were collected from Dapeng (Mis) Bay and analyzed for arsenic and metals. Through this study, we had obtained the following four main conclusions: (1) average concentrations of arsenic and metals (μg/kg, wet weight) in the aquatic organism samples were 48.7 for Cr, 1762.0 for Mn, 20,632.8 for Fe, 33.0 for Co, 119.5 for Ni, 3184.7 for Cu, 12,040.5 for Zn, 389.0 for As, 189.1 for Se, 144.4 for Cd, 15.0 for Hg, and 55.3 for Pb; (2) factor analysis (FA) revealed that the studied twenty species exhibited three types of arsenic and metal bioenrichment preference;(3) non-carcinogenic health risk assessment indicated insignificant health effects from marine organism consumption; (4) carcinogenic health risk assessment revealed an unacceptable risk from consumption of nine species, seven of which were crustaceans.

Abstract:Three common Chinese edible seaweeds, one brown (Laminaria japonica) and two red (Porphyra crispata and Eucheuma denticulatum), were examined for their total arsenic content. The As species were extracted with yields of 76.4, 69.8 and 25.0%, respectively. Anion-exchange and cation-exchange high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in combination with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were used for the separation of the different arsenic species in two of the three seaweed extracts (Laminaria and Porphyra). The main arsenic species in the algal extracts are arseno sugars, although it has been shown that the Laminaria seaweed contains significant amounts of dimethylarsinic acid (DMA). HPLC was coupled with electrospray mass spectrometry (ES-MS) for structural confirmation of the arsenic species. The mass spectrometer settings for the arseno sugars were optimised using standards. The conclusions drawn on the basis of HPLC-ICP-MS were confirmed by the HPLC-ES-MS data. The HPLC-ES-MS method is capable of determining both arseno sugars and DMA in the seaweeds. The unknown compounds seen in the HPLC-ICP-MS chromatogram of Laminaria could not be ascribed to trimethylarsenic oxide or tetramethylarsonium ion.
Occurrence, speciation analysis and health risk assessment of arsenic in Chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis) collected from China

Abstract:Arsenic (As) is a major hazardous element in natural environments, and arsenic pollution is becoming an issue of concern worldwide. The more toxic inorganic arsenic, such as trivalent arsenite As(Ⅲ) and pentavalent arsenate As(Ⅴ), which normally can transform to organic arsenic compounds, such as arsenobetaine (AsB), arsenocholine (AsC), monomethyl arsenic acid (MMA), dimethyl arsenic acid (DMA), trimethyl arsenic acid (TMA), arsenosugars and arsenolipids. In this study, a total of 2130 individuals of Chinese mitten crabs were collected from seven locations and mixed to 71 samples. Total arsenic and six major species (AsC, AsB, DMA, MMA, As (Ⅲ), and As (Ⅴ)) were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and high-performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS), respectively. The target hazard quotient (THQ) was utilized to evaluate the human health risk. The total arsenic concentration and totals for the six arsenic forms are 0.25–1.66 mg/kg and 0.05–1.19 mg/kg wet mass, respectively. Except for HH and LH, the six arsenic species concentrations accounted for more than 50.0 % of the total arsenic. The less toxic AsB is the most predominant in crabs, comprising 50.0 %–90.0 % of the sum of six types of arsenic. The more toxic inorganic arsenic only range from 0.01 to 0.21 mg/kg wet mass, much less than the limit content of 0.50 mg/kg inorganic As in crustacea. The THQ values of inorganic arsenic through the consumption of Chinese mitten crabs are estimated, and the values are all less than 1, indicating that intaking Chinese mitten crabs collected from China will not cause an appreciable hazard risk to human health.

Abstract:The arsenic (As) content of seaweed has been extensively studied due to its toxicological concerns. As a primary producer, seaweed plays a vital role in the biochemical cycling of As in marine environments. Several studies have focused on the growth and behavior of seaweed under a salinity gradient; however, information related to the impact of salinity on As uptake, biotransformation mechanism, and time-dependent speciation patterns of these plants is limited. This study aimed to investigate the temporal effects of salinity on these factors in seaweed. Three seaweed species, Sargassum fusiforme, Sargassum thunbergii, and Sargassum horneri, were maintained in a 1% Provasoli-enriched seawater medium for 14 d under 5‰, 15‰, 25‰, and 34‰ salinities. The results revealed that the high salinity media promoted a rapid uptake of As by all three species. Arsenic accumulation inside the cell approached 100% within seven days of culture for S. thunbergii, irrespective of the salinity content of the media. In addition, As(V) biotransformation and release by S. fusiforme and S. thunbergii were time-dependent, while S. horneri released dimethylarsinic acid (DMAA) from day 3 of the culture. All seaweed species showed methylation of As(V) to DMAA during the culture period. Furthermore, S. thunbergii released DMAA when As(V) was completely depleted from the culture media, whereas the release by S. fusiforme and S. horneri was relatively earlier than that of S. thunbergii. S. horneri showed minimal tolerance to low salinity, as the cells revealed significant damage. Based on the results of this study, a conceptual model was developed that demonstrated the effects of salinity on As uptake and the biotransformation mechanism of seaweed.
Screening of Seaweeds in the East China Sea As Potential Bio-Monitors of Heavy Metals.

Abstract:Seaweeds are good bio-monitors of heavy metal pollution and have been included in European coastal monitoring programs. However, data for seaweed species in China are scarce or missing. In this study, we explored the potential of seaweeds as bio-monitor by screening the natural occurring seaweeds in the "Kingdom of seaweed and shellfish" at Dongtou Islands, the East China Sea. Totally, 12 seaweed species were collected from six sites, with richness following the sequence of Rhodophyta > Phaeophyta > Chlorophyta. The concentration of heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cd, As) in the seaweeds was determined, and the bioaccumulation coefficient was calculated. A combination of four seaweeds, Pachydictyon coriaceum, Gelidium divaricatum, Sargassum thunbergii, and Pterocladiella capillacea, were proposed as bio-monitors due to their high bioaccumulation capabilities of specific heavy metals in the East China Sea and hence hinted the importance of using seaweed community for monitoring of pollution rather than single species. Our results provide first-hand data for the selection of bio-monitor species for heavy metals in the East China Sea and contribute to selection of cosmopolitan bio-monitor communities over geographical large area, which will benefit the establishment of monitoring programs for coastal heavy metal contamination.

Abstract:It is very important to consider the bio-accessibilities and concentrations of each arsenic species, not total arsenic, in seafood in order to accurately assess internal exposure level and health risk of arsenic from seafood. Herein, the concentrations and in vitro bio-accessibilities of each arsenic species in various fishes and shellfishes/shrimps were extensively investigated. Experimental results showed that arsenic species and contents in shellfishes/fishes remarkably varied with the difference of fish/shellfish species or individuals and sampling area, and arsenobetaine (AsB) is dominant arsenic species for fishes and shellfishes/shrimps. Different arsenic species in the same fish/shellfish have quite different bio-accessibilities, and the bio-accessibilities of each arsenic species also varied with fish/shellfish species or individuals. As3+ in fishes/shellfishes was partly oxidized to form As5+ during gastrointestinal digestion, and thus it is more reasonable and practicable to evaluate the bio-accessibilities of inorganic arsenic (iAs, total As3+ and As5+), not individual As3+ and As5+. Fishes and shellfishes/shrimps have similar bio-accessibilities of iAs, AsB and total arsenic, whereas have different bio-accessibilities of MMA (monomethylarsonic acid), DMA (dimethylarsinic acid), and two un-identified arsenic (Ui-As1 and Ui-As2). The results of this study provided a valuable knowledge for accurately assessing the health risk of arsenic in seafood.

Speciation analysis of six arsenic species in marketed shellfish: Extraction optimization and health risk assessment

Abstract:A comparative study between microwave assisted and sonication methods was carried out to extract arsenic (As) species in shellfish samples using different extractants. Six As species including arsenite [As(III)], arsenate [As(V)], monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), arsenobetaine (AsB) and arsenocholine (AsC) were simultaneously separated and determined by the HPLC-ICP-MS method. The microwave assisted method exhibited higher efficiency than sonication, especially using diluted HNO3 as extractant. By compromising extraction efficiency, pretreatment time and stability of As species, the microwave assisted method using 1% HNO3 at 100°C for 1.5h was selected to extract As from real samples. The proposed method has been applied to extract and determine As species in shellfish samples. The result of correlation analysis indicated that the proportion of AsB in the shellfish samples was decreased with total As concentration increasing due to the biotransformation threshold from inorganic As to AsB.

Abstract:Bivalves, such as oysters and mussels, are exposed to environmental pollutants, like microplastics (MPs) and arsenic (As). This study investigated co-existence and interaction of MPs and As (total As and As species) in two bivalve species from the Chinese coastline. Smaller MPs (20-100 μm) averaged 30.98 items/g, while larger MPs (100-500 μm) averaged 2.98 items/g. Oysters contained more MPs (57.97 items/g) in comparison to mussels (11.10 items/g). In Contrast, mussels had a higher As concentrations (8.36-23.65 mg/kg) than oysters (4.97-11.02 mg/kg). The size and composition of MPs influenced As uptake and speciation in bivalves, with inorganic arsenic (iAs) and methylated arsenic (MMA and DMA) correlating with larger-sized MPs. Polyethylene (PE) may interact with the formation of arsenobetaine (AsB) in oyster. This study provides valuable insights into the interaction of MPs and As in marine ecosystems and highlights their implications for food safety.

Abstract:This investigation was aimed at determining the concentration levels of five toxic heavy metals (lead, cadmium, chromium, arsenic, and mercury) in dried Porphyra and Laminaria samples from coastal city of China. Atomic fluorescence spectrometry was used for mercury, and liquid chromatography coupled with ICP-MS was used for arsenic speciation. The mean concentrations of lead, cadmium, chromium, total arsenic, and mercury were 0.96 ± 0.03 mg/kg, 2.62 ± 0.07 mg/kg, 1.64 ± 0.08 mg/kg, 36.67 ± 0.53 mg/kg, and 7.56 ± 0.42 μg/kg for Porphyra samples and 0.61 ± 0.03 mg/kg, 0.48 ± 0.02 mg/kg, 3.78 ± 0.56 mg/kg, 43.85 ± 1.42 mg/kg, and 46.61 ± 2.02 μg/kg for Laminaria samples. The results were comparable with previous similar research. The potential health risk assessment was conducted by comparing the calculated weekly intakes of toxic metals from Porphyra and Laminaria with provisional tolerable weekly intake. Consumption of these seaweeds does not seem to pose a risk for the consumers’ health regarding their content of heavy metals. However, the potential health risk of cadmium should not be overlooked for consumers with high intake of Porphyra.

Abstract:Despite the benefits of shellfish consumption, the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in shellfish can endanger consumer’s health. The consumption of seafood in Shenzhen (a fast-developing metropolis in China) has received more and more attention. Arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) in ten common shellfish species and associated health risks were analyzed for Shenzhen’s consumers by evaluating estimated weekly intake (EWI), non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks to children, adolescents, and adults. In this study, 50 shellfish samples were collected in total. The results showed that the levels of inorganic arsenic (iAs) in Babylonia areolata exceeded the maximum permissible limit set by the food safety guidelines (0.5 mg/kg), while other elements were below the limit in the present guidelines (Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China, GB 2762-2012). EWI values of children, adolescents, and adults were all lower than provisional tolerable weekly intakes (PTWIs) of all shellfish species. The analysis of total target hazard quotients (TTHQ) showed that the ingested B. areolata in children, adolescents, and adults were all at non-carcinogenic risks; the consumption of Argopecten irradians and Chlamys farreri would pose non-carcinogenic risks for children only. In all age groups, the consumption of A. irradians, B. areolata, C. farreri, and Crassostrea ariakensis would lead to lifetime cancer risk due to Cd bioaccumulation, with toxicity of Pb and iAs to be acceptable and negligible.

Abstract:In both the North Sea and the Açu Port (Brazil) coastal areas, high As concentrations were observed in water, soil and sediments. Therefore, the impact of this contamination on fish and shellfish species bought from local fishermen was studied. Total As was assessed by ICP-MS while toxic As was assessed by ICPMS-HPLC and HG-AFS. Several fish species had average Total As concentrations above 1 mg g−1, but the highest concentrations were found in less spotted dogfish, lemon sole and whelks from the North Sea. Toxic As fractions were high in scallops but rarely exceeded 2% in other species. Considering consumption of 150 g, only 3 samples exceeded the total daily intake. Using mean toxic As concentrations for each species, lifetime cancer risk values at the actual global seafood consumption rate of 54 g/day are above 10−4 for whelks, scallops, dogfish, ray and lemon sole.
Ionic effects of Na+ and Cl- on photosynthesis in Glycine max seedlings under isoosmotic salt stress.

Abstract:Ion-specific stress effects of Na(+) and Cl(-) on photosynthesis of seedlings of two soybean (Glycine max) cultivars (the salt-tolerant 'Lee68' and the salt-sensitive 'N23674') were studied and compared under isoosmotic (-0.53 MPa) solutions [PEG-6000, NaCl, Na(+) (without Cl(-)) and Cl(-) (without Na(+))] for 6 d. The results showed that the chlorophyll contents and the ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) activities of seedlings of both cultivars were inhibited to a less degree by PEG-6000 than by NaCl, Na(+) (without Cl(-)) or Cl(-) (without Na(+)) solutions. The maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) (F(v)/F(m)), electron transfer rate (ETR) and effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (F(v)'/F(m)') were lowered significantly by PEG-6000 treatment for 2 d and 6 d. But when treated with the three isoosmotic salt stresses, most of the above three indexes significantly declined. Leaf stomatal conductance (G(s)) and net photosynthetic rate (P(n)) in both cultivars were significantly decreased under the four isoosmotic treatments, and much more drops were observed in the three salt stresses, but the intercellular CO(2) concentration (C(i)) decreased by PEG-6000 treatment and increased by the three salt stresses. Higher decreases including chlorophyll content, Rubisco activity, F(v)/F(m), ETR, F(v)'/F(m)', P(n) and G(s), and higher contents of Cl(-) as well as the content of Cl(-) plus Na(+) in chloroplasts were all observed under Cl(-) (without Na(+)) treatment than those under Na(+) (without Cl(-)) treatment, especially for the salt-sensitive cultivar 'N23674'. The results indicate that, among the adverse effects of NaCl stress on photosynthesis of G. max seedlings, the ionic toxicity was stronger than osmotic stress, and the toxicity of Cl(-) was more severe than that of Na(+).

Abstract:Inorganic arsenic (iAs), which predominantly occurs as arsenite (As 3+ ) and arsenate (As 5+ ) in natural water, is primarily accumulated by seaweed in marine environments. However, the detailed mechanisms through which As 3+ and As 5+ affect the physiological processes of these organisms remain largely unknown. This study focused on evaluating the toxicological effects of As 3+ and As 5+ on the seaweed Sarcodia suae . Exposure to As 3+ and As 5+ resulted in IC 50 values of 401.5 ± 9.4 μg L −1 and 975.8 ± 13 μg L −1 , respectively. Morphological alterations and a reduction in phycoerythrin content were observed, particularly under As 3+ exposure, with increased lipid peroxidation as evidenced by higher malondialdehyde levels. Exposure to As 3+ also elevated the production of superoxide radicals, while decreasing hydrogen peroxide levels specifically in the presence of As 3+ . The induction of antioxidative enzyme activities, namely superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase, and ascorbate peroxidase was observed, signaling an adaptive response to iAs-induced oxidative stress. Moreover, levels of the antioxidants ascorbate and glutathione were elevated post-exposure, especially in response to As 3+ . Additionally, bioaccumulation of arsenic was significantly higher in the As 3+ compared to As 5+ . Collectively, the data suggest that As 3+ imposes greater adverse effects and oxidative stress to S. suae , which responds by adjusting its antioxidative defense mechanisms to mitigate oxidative stress.
