Abstract:The integration of the physical and digital world has become increasingly important, and location-based services have become the most sought-after application in the field of the Internet of Things (IoT). This paper delves into the current research on ultra-wideband (UWB) indoor positioning systems (IPS). It begins by examining the most common wireless communication-based technologies for IPSs followed by a detailed explanation of UWB. Then, it presents an overview of the unique characteristics of UWB technology and the challenges still faced by the IPS implementation. Finally, the paper evaluates the advantages and limitations of using machine learning algorithms for UWB IPS.

Abstract:Positioning systems are used in a wide range of applications which require determining the position of an object in space, such as locating and tracking assets, people and goods; assisting navigation systems; and mapping. Indoor Positioning Systems (IPSs) are used where satellite and other outdoor positioning technologies lack precision or fail. Ultra-WideBand (UWB) technology is especially suitable for an IPS, as it operates under high data transfer rates over short distances and at low power densities, although signals tend to be disrupted by various objects. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the precision, failure, and accuracy of 2D IPSs based on UWB technology and a pseudo-range multilateration algorithm using Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) signals. As a case study, the positioning of a 4×4m2 area, four anchors (transceivers), and one tag (receiver) are considered using bitcraze's Loco Positioning System. A Cramér-Rao Lower Bound analysis identifies the convex hull of the anchors as the region with highest precision, taking into account the anisotropic radiation pattern of the anchors' antennas as opposed to ideal signal distributions, while bifurcation envelopes containing the anchors are defined to bound the regions in which the IPS is predicted to fail. This allows the formulation of a so-called flyable area, defined as the intersection between the convex hull and the region outside the bifurcation envelopes. Finally, the static bias is measured after applying a built-in Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and mapped using a Radial Basis Function Network (RBFN). A debiasing filter is then developed to improve the accuracy. Findings and developments are experimentally validated, with the IPS observed to fail near the anchors, precision around ±3cm, and accuracy improved by about 15cm for static and 5cm for dynamic measurements, on average.

Abstract:Electromagnetic wave is susceptible to the multipath effect, especially in complex indoor environment. As transmission of non-line of sight (NLOS), it leads to bigger measurement error, which makes positioning accuracy decline. In the paper, we aim to compensate the measurement error mainly affected by the NLOS to enhance the positioning accuracy. Conceptions of "virtual inertial point" and "environmental factor" are introduced, and moreover acceleration data of inertial measurement unit (IMU) are adopted. A novel and simple NLOS error compensation method for high accuracy indoor positioning system based UWB is proposed. Based on the principle of inertia, IMU can be used to fix motion trend of tag and to get coordinate of virtual inertial point. The measurement coordinate can be acquired by UWB system. We can calculate the distances between virtual inertial point and real measurement in same area, respectively under line of sight (LOS) and NLOS in advance. The ratio of two different distances can be defined as environmental factor, which is mainly used to reflect the influence of NLOS on positioning accuracy quantitatively relative to LOS in the paper. Environmental factor, as the weighted coefficient, is adopted to merge coordinates of the virtual inertial point and measurement to obtain the coordinate compensated under NLOS. It is a process of scaling measurement down to user-defined area for positioning accuracy requirement to reduce the impact of NLOS. At last, Kalman Filter is used to smooth the set of coordinate compensated under NLOS to further improve positioning accuracy. Experimental results show that our method can effectively compensate the NLOS error in the indoor positioning system based ultra-wide band (UWB) technology. The positioning accuracy is improved nearby 80% in NLOS area.

Abstract:Indoor positioning system (IPS) plays an important role in the applications of Internet of Things (IoT), including intelligent hospital, logistics, and warehousing. Ultrawideband (UWB)-based IPS has shown superior performance due to its strong multipath resistance and high temporal resolution. However, the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) situations noticeably degrade both the positioning accuracy and the communication reliability. To address this issue, we first propose a support vector machine (SVM)-based channel detection method to distinguish the line-of-sight (LOS) and NLOS conditions. Then, one base station (BS)-based distance and angle positioning algorithm with extended Kalman filter (DAPA-EKF) in NLOS environment is proposed. For the LOS environment, least squares (LSs) with EKF processing of acceleration (LS-AEKF) and velocity (LS-VEKF) are developed. To further improve the performance, the combination of time difference of arrival (TDOA) and KF in LOS environment is proposed. Simulation results show that the positioning accuracy of the proposed algorithm is improved in various environments. Finally, validated using more than 1000 testing positions, the positioning accuracy of LS-AEKF is 73.8%–74.1% higher than that of LS-VEKF among the two proposed algorithms in terms of three or four BSs metrics.

Abstract:The emerging Internet of Things (IoT) applications, such as smart manufacturing and smart home, lead to a huge demand on the provisioning of low-cost and high-accuracy positioning and navigation solutions. Inertial measurement unit (IMU) can provide an accurate inertial navigation solution in a short time but its positioning error increases fast with time due to the cumulative error of accelerometer measurement. On the other hand, ultrawideband (UWB) positioning and navigation accuracy will be affected by the actual environment and may lead to uncertain jumps even under line-of-sight (LOS) conditions. Therefore, it is hard to use a standalone positioning and navigation system to achieve high accuracy in indoor environments. In this article, we propose an integrated indoor positioning system (IPS) combining IMU and UWB through the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and unscented Kalman filter (UKF) to improve the robustness and accuracy. We also discuss the relationship between the geometric distribution of the base stations (BSs) and the dilution of precision (DOP) to reasonably deploy the BSs. The simulation results show that the prior information provided by IMU can significantly suppress the observation error of UWB. It is also shown that the integrated positioning and navigation accuracy of IPS significantly improves that of the least squares (LSs) algorithm, which only depends on UWB measurements. Moreover, the proposed algorithm has high computational efficiency and can realize real-time computation on general embedded devices. In addition, two random motion approximation model algorithms are proposed and evaluated in the real environment. The experimental results show that the two algorithms can achieve certain robustness and continuous tracking ability in the actual IPS.
