Abstract:This paper presents a safety-enhanced eco-driving strategy for connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), which is implemented by a hierarchical and distributed framework. The driving risk field, shockwave theory, and motion planning and control method are integrated into this framework to optimize the trajectories of CAVs on a signalized arterial under mixed traffic flow, with the aim of reducing the driving risk and fuel consumption of CAVs simultaneously, while ensuring traffic efficiency. The optimization procedure is mainly composed of two parts: long-term trajectory planning based on optimal control and short-term trajectory control based on model predictive control, which makes the strategy more adaptable to the various traffic conditions. The results show that the proposed framework can effectively reduce the safety risk that vehicles are exposed to and their fuel consumption by 18%–24% and 20%–27%, respectively. Furthermore, it reveals that conventional eco-driving strategies may result in negative safety issues when only considering the impact of preceding vehicles on the eco-CAV. However, these negative impacts can be eliminated when the impacts of following vehicles on the eco-CAV are taken into account. In addition, the sensitivity analysis on the Market Penetration Rate (MPR) of CAVs and traffic demand is performed. The results show that the framework is robust and can work under various traffic conditions (including under-saturated and over-saturated ones) and different MPRs.

Abstract:This paper addresses urban ecological driving (Eco-driving) in traffic-mixed and power-heterogeneous conditions that involve electrified connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) and traditional fuel-powered manually-driven vehicles (MVs). The paper studies how eco-driving for electrified CAVs would affect MVs' fuel consumptions, in urban traffic conditions with small market penetration rates (MPRs) of CAVs. While designing eco-driving strategies for CAV s, previous works rarely considered the disturbance of MVs moving in front of the CAVs and the interference of queueing dynamics at signalized intersections. This paper addresses both uncertain factors via a rolling-horizon optimal control scheme. The results of simulation studies show that electrified CAVs each have the potential of reducing more than 70% energy consumption via eco-driving, meanwhile leading to 28% fuel consumption reduction on average for each involved MV.
Energy-optimal Speed Regulation for CAVs in Urban Mixed Traffic with Induced Lane Changes

Abstract:Existing urban energy-optimal vehicle speed regulation (eco-driving) studies were mostly carried out on single-lane roads or did not consider lane changes, delivering overidealized eco-driving results. In addition to lane changes that every vehicle may encounter on roads, the eco-driving connected automated vehicles (CAVs) are subject to induced types of lane changes of manually-driven vehicles (MVs), a cut-in of an MV to the front of a CAV from an adjacent lane, and an escape of an MV from behind a CAV to an adjacent lane. So far, very few studies have considered the impact of lane changes while designing the eco-driving strategies and evaluated the eco-driving performance with respect to lane-changing disturbances in credible simulation environments; and almost no existing work has addressed both lateral and longitudinal disturbances for eco-driving. This paper has developed a generic and deployable eco-driving strategy for CAVs under a unified rolling-horizon optimal control framework that can deal with both longitudinal and lateral disturbances of MVs without assuming communications between CAVs and MVs. The performance of this disturbance-rejection eco-driving strategy was thoroughly evaluated with regard to a multilane urban network, using the microscopic traffic simulator SUMO. Abstract:Urban eco-driving of connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) aims to optimize CAVs' speed trajectories to avoid sharp accelerations/decelerations and stops at signalized intersections for the minimization of energy consumption of mixed traffic of CAVs and manually-driven vehicles (MVs). Existing eco-driving studies rarely considered lane changes of MVs. Besides ordinary lane changes that usually take place in traffic flow, eco-driving CAVs tend to trigger specific types of lane changes of MVs, i.e. cut-in from adjacent lanes to the front of CAVs, or escape from behind CAVs to adjacent lanes. It is significant to investigate the interplay between such extraordinary lane changes of MVs and eco-driving endeavors. This paper has developed a generic and deployable eco-driving strategy for CAVs that can deal with both lateral disturbances (e.g. cut-in and escape lane changes of MVs) and longitudinal disturbances (e.g. MVs moving in front and vehicle queues at downstream intersections), without assuming communications between CAVs and MVs. The eco-driving task was formulated as an optimal control problem with safety constraints, and tackled under a unified rolling-horizon framework, with each cut-in lane change treated as a newly emerging longitudinal disturbance to CAVs. The eco-driving performance was thoroughly evaluated for an urban multilane road network based on SUMO. The eco-driving strategy was demonstrated capable of tackling various disturbances of MVs and effectively achieving the eco-driving purpose. For the eco-driving effects on lane changes of MVs, the numbers of cut-in and escape lane changes ascended until the market penetration rate (MPR) of CAVs reached 30% and then kept decreasing, while the number of ordinary lane changes dropped monotonically with the MPR increase. As to the impact of cut-in and escape lane changes of MVs on eco-driving, the energy saving benefits of all CAVs and MVs grew with the MPR increase, despite the disturbances of MV lane changes. Similar results were not reported before.

Abstract:This study presents a fuel-economical driving strategy for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) and investigates its impacts on human-driven platoon's fuel efficiency, considering driver behavioral diversity. In mixed traffic where a limited number of CAVs and many human-driven vehicles share the road, the Eco-Driving strategy of CAVs, accomplished through vehicle connectivity and longitudinal dynamics control, can significantly reduce fuel consumption of CAVs, particularly during transient traffic conditions, by avoiding unnecessary braking and acceleration maneuvers which lead to excessive fuel consumption. This is implemented and validated by a vehicle longitudinal dynamic control design with an instantaneous power-based fuel rate estimation model. Moreover, such an Eco-Driving strategy will also help most of the following human-driven vehicles to improve fuel performance despite a highly diverse and uncertain driving characteristics spectrum. The car-following behaviors of a human-driven platoon are described by a microscopic traffic model with dedicated representations of the individual drivers' preferences. A comprehensive statistical investigation shows the fuel-saving benefits for a human-driven platoon by adopting the proposed Eco-Driving strategy for CAVs. Some special cases are discussed, as well. The results collectively demonstrate the positive impacts of CAVs, even with a low penetration rate, could potentially have on the energy efficiency of the transportation sector within the foreseeable future.

Abstract:Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) can plan and actuate control that explicitly considers performance, system safety, and actuation constraints in a manner more efficient than their human-driven counterparts. In particular, eco-driving is enabled through connected exchange of information from signalized corridors that share their upcoming signal phase and timing (SPaT). This is accomplished in the proposed control approach, which follows first principles to plan a free-flow acceleration-optimal trajectory through green traffic light intervals by Pontryagin's Minimum Principle in a feedback manner. Urban conditions are then imposed from exogeneous traffic comprised of a mixture of human-driven vehicles (HVs) - as well as other CAVs. As such, safe disturbance compensation is achieved by implementing a model predictive controller (MPC) to anticipate and avoid collisions by issuing braking commands as necessary. The control strategy is experimentally vetted through vehicle-in-the-loop (VIL) of a prototype CAV that is embedded into a virtual traffic corridor realized through microsimulation. Up to 36% fuel savings are measured with the proposed control approach over a human-modelled driver, and it was found connectivity in the automation approach improved fuel economy by up to 26% over automation without. Additionally, the passive energy benefits realizable for human drivers when driving behind downstream CAVs are measured, showing up to 22% fuel savings in a HV when driving behind a small penetration of connectivity-enabled automated vehicles.

Abstract:A reliable and real-time eco-driving control strategy that incorporates vehicle connectivity is crucial for enhancing the fuel economy and mobility of fuel cell hybrid vehicles (FCHVs). However, the strong coupling of dynamic traffic, vehicle dynamics, and powertrain characteristics makes eco-driving challenging in terms of effectiveness and computational efficiency for co-optimizing velocity planning and energy management. This study proposes a hierarchical eco-driving predictive control framework for connected automated FCHVs, which improves comprehensive performance and is real-time applicable by incorporating an explicit dynamic traffic model (EDTM)-based velocity planning and an equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS). The EDTM predicts the ego vehicle’s state of proceeding through signalized intersections in dynamic traffic scenarios. The model predictive control is employed for multi-objective velocity planning, which balances energy savings, comfort, and traffic efficiency. At the powertrain level, a multi-horizon predictive ECMS (MhP-ECMS) is designed to incorporate both the optimized velocity (short-horizon) and the EDTM-based predictive velocity (mid-horizon). Dynamic traffic Scenario- and Hardware-in-the-Loop (S/HiL) validations show that the proposed strategy can make driving smoother in vehicle-following and through signalized intersections, and markedly improve fuel economy by 5.41% compared to the baseline controller. This study helps provide valuable insight into improving the efficiency and mobility of connected vehicles.

Abstract:This paper proposes a less-disturbed ecological driving strategy for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). The proposed strategy integrates the offline planning and the online tracking. In offline planning, an energy efficient reference speed is created based on traffic information (such as the average traffic speed) and characteristics of the vehicle (such as the engine efficiency map) via dynamic programming. The consideration of average traffic speed in speed planning avoids selfish optimisations. In online tracking, model predictive control is employed to update the vehicle speed in real-time to track the reference speed. A key challenge in applying ecological driving strategies in real driving is that the vehicle has to consider other traffic participants when tracking the reference speed. Therefore, this paper combines both longitudinal control and lateral control to achieve better speed tracking by overtaking the preceding vehicle when necessary. The proposed less-disturbed ecological driving strategy has been evaluated in simulations in both single road segment scenario and real traffic environment. Comparisons of the proposed method with benchmark strategies and human drivers are made. The results demonstrate that the proposed less-disturbed ecological driving strategy is more effective in energy saving. Compared to human drivers, the less-disturbed eco-driving strategy improves the fuel efficiency of CAVs by 4.53%.

Abstract:Connectivity in ground vehicles allows vehicles to share crucial vehicle data, such as vehicle acceleration, with each other. Using sensors such as cameras, radars and lidars, on the other hand, the intravehicular distance between a leader vehicle and a host vehicle can be detected, as well as the relative speed. Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) builds upon ground vehicle connectivity and sensor information to form convoys with automated car following. CACC can also be used to improve fuel economy and mobility performance of vehicles in the said convoy. In this paper, 3 car following algorithms for fuel economy of CAVs are presented. An Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) algorithm was designed as the benchmark model for comparison. A Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) was designed, which uses lead vehicle acceleration received through V2V in car following. an Ecological Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (Eco-CACC) model was developed that takes the erratic lead vehicle acceleration as a disturbance to be attenuated. A High Level (HL) controller was designed for decision making when the lead vehicle was an erratic driver. Model-in-the-Loop (MIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulations were run to test these car following algorithms for fuel economy performance. The results show that the HL controller was able to attain a smooth speed profile that consumed less fuel through using CACC and Eco-CACC than its ACC counterpart when the lead vehicle was erratic.

Experimental Validation of Eco-Driving and Eco-Heating Strategies for Connected and Automated HEVs

Abstract:This paper presents experimental results that validate eco-driving and eco-heating strategies developed for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). By exploiting vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications, traffic signal timing, and queue length estimations, optimized and smoothed speed profiles for the ego-vehicle are generated to reduce energy consumption. Next, the planned eco-trajectories are incorporated into a real-time predictive optimization framework that coordinates the cabin thermal load (in cold weather) with the speed preview, i.e., eco-heating. To enable eco-heating, the engine coolant (as the only heat source for cabin heating) and the cabin air are leveraged as two thermal energy storages. Our eco-heating strategy stores thermal energy in the engine coolant and cabin air while the vehicle is driving at high speeds, and releases the stored energy slowly during the vehicle stops for cabin heating without forcing the engine to idle to provide the heating source. To test and validate these solutions, a power-split hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) has been instrumented for cabin thermal management, allowing to regulate heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system inputs (cabin temperature setpoint and blower flow rate) in real-time. Experiments were conducted to demonstrate the energy-saving benefits of eco-driving and eco-heating strategies over real-world city driving cycles at different cold ambient temperatures. The data confirmed average fuel savings of 14.5% and 4.7% achieved by eco-driving and eco-heating, respectively, offering a combined energy saving of more than 19% when comparing to the baseline vehicle driven by a human driver with a constant-heating strategy.

Abstract:Eco-cruising control of vehicles is a potential approach for improving vehicle energy efficiency and reducing travel time. However, many eco-cruising studies merely focused on vehicle longitudinal speed optimization but overlooked the lane change maneuvers, which may impair the benefits of eco-cruising when the vehicle encounters the slowly moving preceding vehicle (PV). This study proposes a flexible eco-cruising strategy (FECS) with efficient driving lane planning and speed optimization capabilities simultaneously for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). The FECS is designed with a hierarchical control framework, where the first layer uses the Dijkstra algorithm to plan an efficient driving lane sequence considering the long-term effect of the PVs, then guides the second layer to optimize the vehicle’s speed for saving energy using trigonometric speed profile. The optimized driving trajectory is implemented in the third layer by regulating the speed and yaw angle for guaranteeing safe intervehicle distance when uncertainties are present. Finally, stochastic simulation with randomized traffic flows and typical case analysis based on real-world traffic data are conducted to demonstrate the performance of the FECS The results manifest FECS’s capability of lowering driving costs in moderate-flow and free-flow traffic. However, we note that the benefits are less pronounced in congested-flow traffic.

Abstract:In the urban corridor with a mixed traffic composition of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) alongside human-driven vehicles (HDVs), vehicle operations are intricately influenced by both individual driving behaviors and the presence of signalized intersections. Therefore, the development of a coordinated control strategy that effectively accommodates these dual factors becomes imperative to enhance the overall quality of traffic flow. This study proposes a bi-level structure crafted to decouple the joint effects of the vehicular driving behaviors and corridor signal offsets setting. The objective of this structure is to optimize both the average travel time (ATT) and fuel consumption (AFC). At the lower-level, three types of car-following models while considering driving modes are presented to illustrate the desired driving behaviors of HDVs and CAVs. Moreover, a trigonometry function method combined with a rolling horizon scheme is proposed to generate the eco-trajectory of CAVs in the mixed traffic flow. At the upper-level, a multi-objective optimization model for corridor signal offsets is formulated to minimize ATT and AFC based on the lower-level simulation outputs. Additionally, a revised Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) is adopted to identify the set of Pareto-optimal solutions for corridor signal offsets under different CAV penetration rates (CAV PRs). Numerical experiments are conducted within a corridor that encompasses three signalized intersections. The performance of our proposed eco-driving strategy is validated in comparison to the intelligent driver model (IDM) and green light optimal speed advisory (GLOSA) algorithm in single-vehicle simulation. Results show that our proposed strategy yields reduced travel time and fuel consumption to both IDM and GLOSA. Subsequently, the effectiveness of our proposed coordinated control strategy is validated across various CAV PRs. Results indicated that the optimal AFC can be reduced by 4.1%–32.2% with CAV PRs varying from 0.2 to 1, and the optimal ATT can be saved by 2.3% maximum. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis is conducted to evaluate the impact of CAV PRs and V/C ratios on the optimal ATT and AFC.

Abstract:The advent of intelligent vehicles that can communicate with infrastructure as well as automate the movement provides a range of new options to address key urban traffic issues such as congestion and pollution, without the need for centralized traffic control. Furthermore, the advances in the information, communication, and sensing technologies have provided access to real-time traffic and emission data. Leveraging these advancements, a dynamic multi-objective eco-routing strategy for connected & automated vehicles (CAVs) is proposed and implemented in a distributed traffic management system. It is applied to the road network of downtown Toronto in an in-house agent-based traffic simulation platform. The performance of the proposed system is compared to various single-objective optimizations. Simulation results show the significance of incorporating real-time emission and traffic state into the dynamic routing, along with considering the expected delays at the downstream intersections. The proposed multi-objective eco-routing has the potential of reducing GHG and NOx emissions by 43% and 18.58%, respectively, while reducing average travel time by 40%.

Abstract:Recent improvements in vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication and onboard computing power have enabled the development of control algorithms that jointly optimize the vehicle velocity and powertrain control in Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs), commonly referred to as the Eco-Driving problem. This paper presents a novel and computationally efficient algorithm to optimize the velocity planning and energy management in a CAV with a hybrid electric powertrain. The Eco-Driving problem is formulated as a dynamic, constrained optimization problem in the spatial domain, where information about the upcoming speed limits and road topography is assumed known. This problem is solved by embedding an Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS) into a Dynamic Programming (DP) optimization to obtain a sub-optimal solution that provides results close to the global optimum at a fraction of the computational cost. Further, a multi-layer hierarchical control architecture is proposed as a path to a causal, real-time implementation. The DP-ECMS algorithm is converted into a Model Predictive Control (MPC) framework by using principles of Approximate Dynamic Programming (ADP). This causal implementation is finally benchmarked to a global optimal solution obtained with DP for different scenarios.

Abstract:This paper experimentally demonstrates the effectiveness of an anticipative car-following algorithm in reducing energy use of gasoline engine and electric Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAV), without sacrificing safety and traffic flow. We propose a Vehicle-in-the-Loop (VIL) testing environment in which experimental CAVs driven on a track interact with surrounding virtual traffic in real-time. We explore the energy savings when following city and highway drive cycles, as well as in emergent highway traffic created from microsimulations. Model predictive control handles high level velocity planning and benefits from communicated intentions of a preceding CAV or estimated probable motion of a preceding human driven vehicle. A combination of classical feedback control and data-driven nonlinear feedforward control of pedals achieve acceleration tracking at the low level. The controllers are implemented in ROS and energy is measured via calibrated OBD-II readings. We report up to 30% improved energy economy compared to realistically calibrated human driver car-following without sacrificing following headway.

To overcome these shortcomings, this paper proposes an innovative eco-driving strategy at intersection approach lanes consisting of the bus-priority lane (BPL) and general-purpose lanes (GPLs). The proposed strategy has the capability of lateral decision-making and allows ego connected and automated vehicles (CAV) to bypass the traffic queue. To enable this capability, the proposed strategy permits the ego CAV to change lanes and share the BPL. Both left-turning-movement CAVs and going-through-movement CAVs are allowed to share the BPL; i.e., the function of the BPL can be switched as per the phases of a traffic signal scheme. Through phase-switch-based bus lane sharing, the proposed eco-driving strategy aims to improve traffic efficiency and sustainability under the partially connected and automated traffic environment. To validate its effectiveness, the proposed strategy is evaluated against the non-control baseline and the state-of-the-art strategy. Sensitivity analysis is conducted under six different demand levels and five different CAV penetration rates. The results show that the proposed eco-driving strategy outperforms and has the benefits of fuel efficiency improvement, throughput improvement, and delay reduction.

Abstract:Eco-driving has been widely investigated over the last decade, but most studies focused on an individual vehicle or a vehicle platoon consisting of pure connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). Recently, mixed vehicle platoons consisting of both CAVs and human-driven vehicles (HDVs) have attracted much interest, considering the fact that HDVs will mix with CAVs in the traffic system for a long period. This paper proposes an eco-driving strategy for mixed platoons, composing of both offline planning and online tracking. In offline planning, an energy-efficient speed reference and a gearshift reference are determined by using the characteristics of each vehicle and future traffic information through dynamic programming. Offline planning optimised the vehicle speed and gearshift to allow the vehicle powertrain working at a high efficiency region. In online tracking, two different types of model predictive controls (MPCs) are proposed to control the CAVs in real-time. The MPCs are designed to achieve precise speed reference tracking performance and guarantee platoon string stability, respectively. Meanwhile, HDVs within the mixed platoon can be located anywhere in the platoon except working as the first vehicle to improve flexibility. Therefore, the proposed eco-driving strategy is applicable to mixed platoons with more general structures in ordering. The key contribution of this study is that the proposed eco-driving strategy can optimise the total fuel consumption for general mixed platoons. Simulation results show that the proposed eco-driving strategy improves the fuel economy of a mixed platoon by up to 6.39% compared to the benchmark conventional-adaptive cruise control strategies.

Abstract:Electric Vehicles (EVs) are cost-effective and widely recognized for their significant role in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, concerns surrounding range anxiety and charge anxiety have hindered their widespread adoption. To address these concerns, traffic engineers have been working on developing control strategies to reduce energy consumption (EC). Unlike traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, EVs experience a notable increase in EC at speeds exceeding 25km/h. Consequently, minimizing EC often results in reduced speed and longer total travel time (TTT). In light of this, our paper proposes a novel trajectory and signal control method that leverages connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technology to realize a tradeoff between EC and TTT. Initially, the approach assumes all vehicles are connected and automated electric vehicles (CAEVs) capable of communication and coordination, to which a cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) model was applied. Then, the vehicles were controlled to avoid stops and achieve smoother trajectories at the intersections. Finally, the signal control was integrated to further reduce EC and TTT. The proposed method was evaluated with a simulation conducted in SUMO based on a busy corridor in the City of Edmonton, Canada. The developed method successfully balanced energy and traffic efficiency, reducing both EC and TTT by 14% and 38% respectively. More importantly, the computational burden of our method is considerably lighter compared to existing studies, making it highly suitable for real-time applications. Overall, the results presented in our study showcase the potential of achieving a more efficient and sustainable traffic system with the future existence of CAEVs.

Abstract:The rapid increase in the number of vehicles has brought significant challenges to energy conservation and environmental sustainability. To solve these problems, various frameworks and models based on intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs) have been identified for road capacity improvement and fuel consumption reduction. In this paper, an eco-driving controller with ICVs was first proposed by combining vehicular dynamics with wireless communication technologies, where the nodes that can implement perception and control in a simulated complex traffic environment have been deployed. Then, the information of the surrounding environment, including the preceding vehicles, was obtained through a wireless communication module based on the technology of vehicle to everything (V2X). Besides, the advanced model predictive control (MPC) strategy was integrated into the ICV controller with the objectives of minimizing the driving spacing and improving environmental sustainability. Finally, a co-simulation platform for ICVs based on a robot operating system (ROS) and PreScan software was constructed, and the dynamic characteristics of the controller were verified in three aspects, including car-following behaviors, fuel efficiency improvement, and carbon dioxide emission reduction. The proposed controller showed that it can reduce fuel consumption by 3.71% and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 3.42%, in the scenarios of a preceding vehicle with constant velocity, and by 6.77% and 7.91%, respectively, in a preceding vehicle with variable velocity scenario. The demonstrated experimental results show that the proposed controller can effectively reduce fuel consumption and emissions during car-following.

Abstract:This paper presents an adaptive leading cruise control strategy for the connected and automated vehicle (CAV) and first considers its impact on the following human-driven vehicle (HDV) with diverse driving characteristics in the unified optimization framework for improved holistic energy efficiency. The car-following behaviors of HDV are statistically calibrated using the Next Generation Simulation dataset. In a typical single-lane car-following scenario where CAVs and HDVs share the road, the longitudinal speed control of CAVs can substantially reduce the energy consumption of the following HDV by avoiding unnecessary acceleration and braking. Moreover, apart from the objectives including car-following safety and traffic efficiency, the energy efficiencies of both CAV and HDV are incorporated into the reward function of reinforcement learning. The specific driving pattern of the following HDV is learned in real-time from historical speed information to predict its acceleration and power consumption in the optimization horizon. A comprehensive simulation is conducted to statistically verify the positive impacts of CAV on the holistic energy efficiency of the mixed traffic flow with uncertain and diverse human driving behaviors. Simulation results indicate that the holistic energy efficiency is improved by 4.38% on average.
