Novel Nano Calcium Fluoride Remineralizing and Antibacterial Dental Composites

Abstract:Objective: Composites with remineralizing and antibacterial properties are favorable for caries inhibition. The objectives of this study were to develop a new bioactive nanocomposite with remineralizing and antibiofilm properties by incorporating dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM) and nano-calcium fluoride (nCaF2). Methods: nCaF2 was produced via a spray-drying method and integrated at 15% mass fraction into composite. DMAHDM was added at 3% mass fraction. Mechanical properties and F and Ca ion releases were assessed. Colony-forming units (CFU), lactic acid and metabolic activity of biofilms on composites were performed. Results: The new composites had flexural strengths of (95.28±6.32) MPa and (125.93±7.49) MPa, which were within the ISO recommendations. Biofilm CFU were reduced by 3-4 log (p<0.05). The composites achieved high F releases of (0.89±0.01) mmol/L and (0.44±0.01) mmol/L, and Ca releases of (1.46±0.05) mmol/L and (0.54±0.005) mmol/L. Conclusions: New nanocomposites were developed with good mechanical properties, potent antibacterial activity against salivary biofilms, and high F and Ca ion releases with potential for remineralization. Clinical significance: Novel nanocomposites using nCaF2 and DMAHDM were developed with potent antibacterial and remineralizing effects and high F and Ca ion releases. They are promising to inhibit recurrent caries, promote remineralization, and possess long-term sustainability.
Novel CaF2 Nanocomposites with Antibacterial Function and Fluoride and Calcium Ion Release to Inhibit Oral Biofilm and Protect Teeth

Abstract:(1) Background: The objective of this study was to develop a novel dental nanocomposite containing dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM), 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC), and nanoparticles of calcium fluoride (nCaF2) for preventing recurrent caries via antibacterial, protein repellent and fluoride releasing capabilities. (2) Methods: Composites were made by adding 3% MPC, 3% DMAHDM and 15% nCaF2 into bisphenol A glycidyl dimethacrylate (Bis-GMA) and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) (denoted BT). Calcium and fluoride ion releases were evaluated. Biofilms of human saliva were assessed. (3) Results: nCaF2+DMAHDM+MPC composite had the lowest biofilm colony forming units (CFU) and the greatest ion release; however, its mechanical properties were lower than commercial control composite (p 0.05). Fluoride and calcium ion releases from nCaF2+DMAHDM were much more than commercial composite. Biofilm CFU on composite was reduced by 4 logs (n = 9, p < 0.05). Biofilm metabolic activity and lactic acid were also substantially reduced by nCaF2+DMAHDM, compared to commercial control composite (p < 0.05). (4) Conclusions: The novel nanocomposite nCaF2+DMAHDM achieved strong antibacterial and ion release capabilities, without compromising the mechanical properties. This bioactive nanocomposite is promising to reduce biofilm acid production, inhibit recurrent caries, and increase restoration longevity.
Synthesis and Characterization of an Anti-Caries and Remineralizing Fluorine-Containing Cationic Polymer PHMB-F.

Abstract:Dental caries have become a major global public health problem. Plaque control and remineralization of initial enamel lesions are paramount for the prevention and control of caries. Polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) is a type of cationic amphipathic antibacterial agent with broad-spectrum antibacterial properties and good biological safety. Fluoride delays demineralization and promotes the remineralization of hard dental tissues. However, a high concentration is needed for it to function as an antibacterial agent. In order to create a PHMB with the benefits associated with fluoride, we synthesized a fluorine-containing cationic polymer, PHMB-F. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy and solid state nuclear magnetic resonance characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of PHMB-F. Antibacterial tests showed that PHMB-F had better antiseptic efficacy for Streptococcus mutans compared with just PHMB. Moreover, positively-charged PHMB-F allows fluoride ions to exist closer to the enamel surface with negative potential, which markedly lowers the ion concentrations in the microenvironment adjacent to hard dental tissues needed to maintain equilibrium. Thus, only low concentrations of PHMB-F are required for enamel remineralization.
A bifunctional nanocomplex with remineralizing and antibacterial activities to interrupt dental caries

Abstract:Dental caries result from an imbalance between the demineralization and remineralization of dental hard tissues, primarily caused by biofilm accumulation. According to the theory of interrupting dental caries, effective anticaries materials and techniques should possess both remineralizing and antibacterial properties. However, current anticaries materials fail to mimic the process of amelogenesis to achieve remineralization while inhibiting the adhesion of cariogenic bacteria and the formation of biofilms. In this study, silk fibroin (SF) loaded with benzalkonium chloride (BZC) successfully formed an SF-BZC composite. This composite stabilized amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP), creating an ACP@SF-BZC dual-functional nanocomplex with both remineralizing and antibacterial properties. ACP@SF-BZC demonstrated significant anti-adhesion and biofilm inhibitory effects against Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus. Moreover, compared to fluoride, ACP@SF-BZC significantly enhanced the remineralization of demineralized enamel surfaces, forming a stable remineralized layer with improved mechanical properties, both in vitro and in vivo. In summary, the dual-function ACP@SF-BZC nanocomplex, with its remineralizing and antibacterial effects, offers a promising alternative for preventing and arresting enamel caries.
Dental plaque microcosm biofilm behavior on calcium phosphate nanocomposite with quaternary ammonium

Abstract:Objectives: Half of dental restorations fail in 10 years, with secondary caries as the main reason. Calcium phosphate composites could remineralize tooth lesions. The objectives of this study were to: (1) impart antibacterial activity to a composite with nanoparticles of amorphous calcium phosphate (NACP); and (2) investigate the effect of quaternary ammonium dimethacrylate (QADM) on mechanical and dental plaque microcosm biofilm properties for the first time. Methods: The NACP and glass particles were filled into a dental resin that contained bis(2-methacryloyloxy-ethyl) dimethyl-ammonium bromide, the QADM. NACP nanocomposites containing 0%, 7%, 14%, and 17.5% of QADM by mass, respectively, were photo-cured. A commercial composite with no antibacterial activity was used as control. Mechanical properties were measured in three-point flexure. A human saliva microcosm model was used to grow biofilms on composites. Live/dead assay, metabolic activity, colony-forming unit (CFU) counts, and lactic acid production of biofilms on the composites were measured. Results: Increasing QADM mass fraction monotonically reduced the biofilm viability, CFU and lactic acid. Biofilms on NACP nanocomposite with 17.5% QADM had metabolic activity that was 30% that on a commercial composite control (p<0.05). Total microorganisms, total streptococci, and mutans streptococci CFU counts (mean ± sd; n = 6) on composite control was 6-fold those on NACP +17.5% QADM nanocomposite. Composite control had long strings of bacterial cells with normal short-rod shapes, while some cells on NACP-QADM nanocomposites disintegrated into pieces. Adding QADM to NACP did not decrease the composite strength and elastic modulus, which matched (p>0.1) those of a commercial composite without Ca-PO(4) or antibacterial activity. Significance: A dental plaque microcosm model was used to evaluate the novel NACP-QADM nanocomposite. The nanocomposite greatly reduced the biofilm viability, metabolic activity and lactic acid, while its mechanical properties matched those of a commercial composite. NACP-QADM nanocomposite with calcium phosphate fillers, good mechanical properties and a strong antibacterial activity may have potential for anti-biofilm and anti-caries restorations.
Development of Novel Polymerizable Antibacterial Monomer and Its Antibacterial Effects on Dental Adhesive

Abstract:The object of the present study was to Functionalize adhesive system with antibacterial activity without interfering the bonding effect, to kill bacteria residue on cavity and prevent bacteria from colonization on the margins of bonding. The fluorine -containing imidazolium salt antibacterial monomer was synthesized by the combination reaction of 1-chlorododecane and 1-vinylimidazole, and the replacement reaction to introduce fluoride ion. The synthesized intermediate product and final product were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Fluoride ion was introduced into the bonding system in the form of organic fluorine, and the release behavior of fluoride ion from the functionalized adhesive was studied. The antibacterial experiment showed that the functionalized adhesive was endowed with good antibacterial property, which realized targeted anti -caries ability. The bond strength test indicated that the functionalization with the fluorine -containing imidazolium salt monomer did not affect the bonding performance of the adhesive. These results suggested that adhesive functionalized with the fluorine -containing imidazolium salt monomer had potential for reducing the occurrence of clinical secondary caries.

Abstract:Dental caries is prevalent, and secondary caries causes restoration failures. This article reviews recent studies on developing a new generation of bioactive resins with anticaries properties. Extensive effects were made to develop new antimicrobial composites, bonding agents, and other resins containing quaternary ammonium methacrylates to suppress plaque buildup and bacterial acid production. The effects of alkyl chain length and charge density and the antimicrobial mechanisms for chlorhexidine, nano-silver, quaternary ammonium methacrylates, and protein-repellent agents were discussed. Synergistic effects of contact-killing and protein-repellent properties were shown to yield the greatest biofilm-inhibition effects. The combination of antimicrobial, protein-repellent, and calcium phosphate nanoparticle remineralization was suggested to provide maximal anticaries effects. In addition, for use orally, cytotoxicity and biocompatibility were important considerations for the new bioactive materials. Furthermore, rather than kill all bacteria, it would be more desirable to modulate the oral biofilm compositions via bioactive resins to suppress cariogenic/pathogenic species and promote benign species. For widespread clinical use of the new antimicrobial and therapeutic materials, whether they would induce bacterial drug resistance needs to be determined, which requires further study. Nonetheless, the new generation of bioactive anticaries resins with therapeutic and biofilm acid-inhibiting properties has the potential to substantially benefit oral health.

Abstract:Biomineralization technology has become a trend for the arrest and prevention of dental caries. In particular, the bioactivity and ability to release large amounts of Ca2+ and PO43- ions make amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) for hard tissue remineralization are highly desired. However, the instability of ACP limits its clinical application. Under continuous bacterial challenge in the oral cavity, the currently developed ACP-based remineralization system lacks the ability to inhibit bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. Here, a dual-functional nanocomposite with antibiofilm and remineralization properties was designed by combining zwitterionic poly(carboxybetaine acrylamide) (PCBAA) and ACP. The resulting nanocomposite was stable in solution for at least 3 days without any aggregation. The PCBAA/ACP nanocomposite exerted a significant inhibitory effect on the adhesion and biofilm formation of Streptococcus mutans and exhibited bactericidal activities under acidic conditions resulting from bacteria. Moreover, compared with fluoride, this nanocomposite demonstrated superior effects in promoting the remineralization of demineralized enamel and the occlusion of exposed dentinal tubules in vivo and in vitro. The present work provides a theoretical and experimental basis for the use of the PCBAA/ACP nanocomposite as a potential dual-functional agent for arresting and preventing caries.

Abstract:In Canada, use of electronic medical records (EMRs) among primary health care (PHC) providers is relatively low. However, it appears that EMRs will eventually become more ubiquitous in PHC. This represents an important development in the use of health care information technology as well as a potential new source of PHC data for research. However, care in the use of EMR data is required. Four years ago, researchers at the Centre for Studies in Family Medicine, The University of Western Ontario created an EMR-based research project, called Deliver Primary Health Care Information. Implementing this project led us to two conclusions about using PHC EMR data for research: first, additional time is required for providers to undertake EMR training and to standardize the way data are entered into the EMR and second, EMRs are designed for clinical care, not research. Based on these experiences, we offer our thoughts about how EMRs may, nonetheless, be used for research. Family physician researchers who intend to use EMR data to answer timely questions relevant to practice should evaluate the possible impact of the four questions raised by this paper: (i) why are EMR data different?; (ii) how do you extract data from an EMR?; (iii) where are the data stored? and (iv) what is the data quality? In addition, consideration needs to be given to the complexity of the research question since this can have an impact on how easily issues of using EMR data for research can be overcome.
Epigallocatechin gallate-immobilized antimicrobial resin with rechargeable fluorinated synergistic composite for enhanced caries control

Abstract:Objectives Given the global prevalence of dental caries, impacting 2.5 billion individuals, the development of sophisticated prevention filling materials is crucial. Streptococcus mutans , the principal caries-causing strain, produces acids that demineralize teeth and initiate dental caries. To address this issue, we aimed to develop a synergistic resin-based composite for enhancing caries control. Methods The synergistic resin composite incorporates fluorinated kaolinite and silanized Al 2 O 3 nanoparticle fillers into an epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) immobilized urethane-modified epoxy acrylate (U-EA) resin matrix, referred to the as-prepared resin composite. The EGCG-modified TPGDA/U-EA network was synthesized by preparing methacrylate-functionalized isocyanate (HI), reacting it with EGCG to form HI-EGCG, and then incorporating HI-EGCG into the TPGDA/U-EA matrix. The lamellar space within the kaolinite layer was expanded through the intercalation of acrylamide into kaolinite, enhancing its capability to adsorb and release fluoride ions (F – ). The layered structure of acrylamide/ kaolinite in the U-EA resin composite acts as a F – reservoir. Results The physico-mechanical properties of the as-prepared resin composites are comparable to those of commercial products, exhibiting lower polymerization shrinkage, substantial F – release and recharge and favorable diametral tensile strength. The immobilized EGCG in the composite exhibits potent antimicrobial properties, effectively reducing the biofilm biomass. Furthermore, the synergistic effect of EGCG and fluorinated kaolinite efficiently counteracts acid-induced hydroxyapatite dissolution, thereby suppressing demineralization and promoting enamel remineralization. Significance Our innovative EGCG and fluoride synergistic composite provides enhanced antimicrobial properties, durable anti-demineralization, and tooth remineralization effects, positioning it as a promising solution for effective caries control and long-term dental maintenance.

Regulating Oral Biofilm from Cariogenic State to Non-Cariogenic State via Novel Combination of Bioactive Therapeutic Composite and Gene-Knockout

Abstract:The objectives were to investigate a novel combination of gene-knockout with antimicrobial dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM) composite in regulating oral biofilm from a cariogenic state toward a non-cariogenic state. A tri-species biofilm model included cariogenic Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), and non-cariogenic Streptococcus sanguinis (S. sanguinis) and Streptococcus gordonii (S. gordonii). Biofilm colony-forming-units (CFUs), lactic acid and polysaccharide production were measured. TaqMan real-time-polymerase-chain reaction was used to determine the percentage of each species in biofilm. The rnc gene-knockout for S. mutans with DMAHDM composite reduced biofilm CFU by five logs, compared to control (p < 0.05). Using parent S. mutans, an overwhelming S. mutans percentage of 68.99% and 69.00% existed in biofilms on commercial composite and 0% DMAHDM composite, respectively. In sharp contrast, with a combination of S. mutans rnc knockout and DMAHDM composite, the cariogenic S. mutans percentage in biofilm was reduced to only 6.33%. Meanwhile, the non-cariogenic S. sanguinis + S. gordonii percentage was increased to 93.67%. Therefore, combining rnc-knockout with bioactive and therapeutic dental composite achieved the greatest reduction in S. mutans, and the greatest increase in non-cariogenic species, thereby yielding the least lactic acid-production. This novel method is promising to obtain wide applications to regulate biofilms and inhibit dental caries.

Novel antibacterial dental resin containing silanized hydroxyapatite nanofibers with remineralization capability

Abstract:Objectives: Secondary caries is the primary issue that causes restoration failure. The objectives of this study were to: (1) synthesize silanized hydroxyapatite nanofibers loaded with erythromycin (s-HAFs@EM); (2) evaluate the mechanical property, antibacterial activity, and remineralization capability of the novel dental resin containing s-HAFs@EM. Methods: s-HAFs were prepared by the solvothermal approach and loaded with EM. Characterization and antibacterial activity were evaluated. Subsequently, s-HAFs@EM were incorporated into dental resin at different mass fractions (5 %, 10 %, 15 %, and 20 %), and then they were submitted to characterization, including mechanical property, antibacterial activity, remineralization capability, and cytotoxicity. Results: s-HAFs@EM were successfully synthesized, and they exhibited excellent antibacterial activity. Resin containing 15 % s-HAFs@EM exhibited the best flexural strength (118.67 ± 15.71 MPa) and elastic modulus (2.02 ± 0.30 GPa) (P < 0.05), which were increased by 65.43 % and 90.7 %, compared to those of neat resin, respectively. Resin with 15-20 % s-HAFs@EM showed high antibacterial rate (>85 %) when compared control group (P < 0.05). Furthermore, resin also exhibited a definite remineralization capability and good biosafety in vitro. Significance: This novel multifunctional resin with improved mechanical property, desirable antibacterial activity and remineralization capability is promising to combat secondary caries.
A novel universal adhesive for improved dentin remineralization with antibiofilm potential against Streptococcus mutans and other cariogenic-pathogens

Abstract:Dental demineralization is a widespread problem and the main responsible for dental caries and dentin hypersensitivity. Dental caries is a biofilm-driven bacterial infection that causes mineral depletion in enamel and is associated with an increased prevalence of medical rehabilitative polymeric implants. Since existing tissue-engineering methods are incapable of manufacturing synthetic dentin adhesive, modern therapeutic interventions address the remineralization of caries-infected dentin to prevent its inevitable removal. In recent years, magnetic nanoparticle-coated adhesives were known to deliver drugs to the pulp and get better adhesive penetration into dentin. In the present study, we prepared and assessed the effectiveness of antimicrobial peptide (cecropin A) coated Fe 3 O 4 -nanoparticle on dentin remineralization, bond strength, and its antibiofilm potential against Streptococcus mutans , is associated with dental caries in humans. Prior to the experiment, the synthesized 3 O 4 nanoparticle was characterized and assessed its antibiofilm potential against S. mutans . The transcriptomic approach with qPCR analysis stated that 3 O 4 nanoparticle significantly downregulated the expression of biofilm-regulated genes such as GtfB, GtfC, GtfD, VicR, ComDE , and Smu0630 in S. mutans , which validates the outcome of in vitro results. Interestingly, the prepared 3 O 4 -nanoparticle coated adhesive effectively increased the dentin remineralization and bond strength. Fascinatingly, 3 O 4 adhesive significantly hindered the biofilm formation of S. mutans on the dentin surface. Notably, the 3 O 4 adhesive accomplished reduced biofilm CFU count, lactic acid production, and biofilm metabolic activity. In addition, the 3 O 4 adhesive also reduced the biofilm formation of other caries-associated bacterial pathogens, including S. sobrinus, S. sanguinis, and S. mitis . Overall, the current research found that the 3 O 4 adhesive was more effective in remineralizing dentin lesions with antibiofilm potential in order to avoid Streptococcus -derived dental caries.
A Multifunctional Dental Resin Composite with Sr-N-Doped TiO2 and n-HA Fillers for Antibacterial and Mineralization Effects

Abstract:Dental caries, particularly secondary caries, which is the main contributor to dental repair failure, has been the subject of extensive research due to its biofilm-mediated, sugar-driven, multifactorial, and dynamic characteristics. The clinical utility of restorations is improved by cleaning bacteria nearby and remineralizing marginal crevices. In this study, a novel multifunctional dental resin composite (DRC) composed of Sr-N-co-doped titanium dioxide (Sr-N-TiO2) nanoparticles and nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) reinforcing fillers with improved antibacterial and mineralization properties is proposed. The experimental results showed that the anatase-phase Sr-N-TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized successfully. After this, the curing depth (CD) of the DRC was measured from 4.36 ± 0.18 mm to 5.10 ± 0.19 mm, which met the clinical treatment needs. The maximum antibacterial rate against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) was 98.96%, showing significant inhibition effects (p < 0.0001), which was experimentally verified to be derived from reactive oxygen species (ROS). Meanwhile, the resin exhibited excellent self-remineralization behavior in an SBF solution, and the molar ratio of Ca/P was close to that of HA. Moreover, the relative growth rate (RGR) of mouse fibroblast L929 indicated a high biocompatibility, with the cytotoxicity level being 0 or I. Therefore, our research provides a suitable approach for improving the antibacterial and mineralization properties of DRCs.

Abstract:Adhesive failure due to resin contraction is one of the major reasons for dental restoration failure, which leads to the exposure of dentinal tubules, and remineralization in saliva would provide a great solution for the above problem. In this study, bioactive amphiphilic raspberry-like composite nanoparticles were used as fillers for resin composites, which have good compatibility with the resin matrix and dispersed well in the matrix. Thus, the resin composites showed improved mechanical property and resistance to water sorption and solubility. Furthermore, the incorporation of bioactive nanoparticles endued the resin composites with bioactivity, forming apatite on resin composites upon reacting with artificial saliva within seven days, inducing denser mineral precipitation on the dentin surface and stimulating human dental pulp cell attachment and proliferation. Therefore, this bioactive nanoparticle filled composite resin may offer great benefits for dental restoration.
Novel Antibacterial Resin Coating for Dental Provisional Crowns to Suppress Biofilms and Inhibit Secondary Caries

Abstract:Provisional crowns are often used in dentistry for prolonged periods, but bacterial attachment and dental plaque often lead to gingival inflammation and secondary caries. The aims of this research were to develop a novel resin-based antibacterial provisional crown coating to prevent secondary caries and investigate the physical properties and antibacterial efficacy. The resin-based coating was prepared by addition of triethylene glycoldivinylbenzyl ether and urethane dimethacrylate, with the antibacterial monomer dimethylaminododecyl methacrylate (DMADDM) incorporated at different mass fractions. Surface characteristics including surface roughness and contact angle were assessed. The antibacterial effects were evaluated by 48 h biofilms of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) on provisional crowns coated with the resin-based coating. No statistically significant difference was observed in surface roughness across all groups (p > 0.05), showing that adding DMADDM did not have a negative impact on surface roughness. The contact angle results revealed a significant difference in hydrophilicity between different concentrations of DMADDM (p < 0.01), but overall hydrophilicity did not negatively affect the performance of the coating. The incorporation of 5% DMADDM demonstrated a significant antibiofilm effect on S. mutans biofilm CFU with a 4-log reduction compared to controls (p < 0.01). Significant reductions of 4–5 folds were observed in biofilm metabolic activity and lactic acid production (p < 0.01). The findings suggest that the novel coating material could enhance the long-term performance and clinical outcomes of provisional crowns, contributing to better patient oral health.

Abstract:Secondary caries is one of the leading causes of resin-based dental restoration failure. It is initiated at the interface of an existing restoration and the restored tooth surface. It is mainly caused by an imbalance between two processes of mineral loss (demineralization) and mineral gain (remineralization). A plethora of evidence has explored incorporating several bioactive compounds into resin-based materials to prevent bacterial biofilm attachment and the onset of the disease. In this review, the most recent advances in the design of remineralizing compounds and their functionalization to different resin-based materials' formulations were overviewed. Inorganic compounds, such as nano-sized amorphous calcium phosphate (NACP), calcium fluoride (CaF2), bioactive glass (BAG), hydroxyapatite (HA), fluorapatite (FA), and boron nitride (BN), displayed promising results concerning remineralization, and direct and indirect impact on biofilm growth. The effects of these compounds varied based on these compounds' structure, the incorporated amount or percentage, and the intended clinical application. The remineralizing effects were presented as direct effects, such as an increase in the mineral content of the dental tissue, or indirect effects, such as an increase in the pH around the material. In some of the reported investigations, inorganic remineralizing compounds were combined with other bioactive agents, such as quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), to maximize the remineralization outcomes and the antibacterial action against the cariogenic biofilms. The reviewed literature was mainly based on laboratory studies, highlighting the need to shift more toward testing the performance of these remineralizing compounds in clinical settings.

Abstract:Caries is the most prevalent and widespread chronic oral disease. Traditional caries filling materials, due to their lack of anti-caries capabilities, can readily develop secondary caries. Nanomaterials proposed as an effective approach for caries treatment can inhibit biofilm formation. It also can not only reduce demineralization but also promote remineralization. In recent years, nanotechnology in anti-caries materials, particularly nano-adhesive and nano-composite resin, has advanced rapidly. Because inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) interfere with bacterial metabolism and inhibit biofilm development, inorganic NPs have emerged as a new trend in dental applications. Metal and metal oxide NPs by releasing metal ions, oxidative stress induction, and non-oxidative mechanisms showed significant antimicrobial activity. For applying metal and metal oxide NPs as anti caries agents, silver, zinc, titanium, copper, and calcium ions have been shown significant attention. Moreover, fluoride functionalized inorganic NPs were also employed to improve their efficacy of them. The fluoride-functionalized NPs can promote remineralization, and inhibit demineralization by enhancing apatite formation. In this review, we have provided an overview and recent advances in the use of inorganic NPs as anti caries agents. Furthermore, their antimicrobial, remineralizing, and mechanical impacts on dental materials were discussed.
