Abstract:Bearings, a crucial element in rotating machinery, are most susceptible to failure during operation, making up over half of all malfunctions. Detecting bearing faults in a timely manner can be quite challenging due to the frequent influence of strong noise on the fault features. To address the issue, an adaptive parameter optimization based on Minimum Entropy Deconvolution (MED) method in conjunction with Infogram is proposed. First, the Infogram is created through spectral negentropy, followed by the construction of a filter that utilizes the center frequency and the frequency band exhibiting the highest spectral negentropy. This filter is then applied to the original vibration signal in order to isolate the frequency band that contains the most significant bearing fault information. Then, based on MED method, the autocorrelation function and L1 norm are introduced to evaluate the filtered signal to realize the adaptive search of deconvolution filter length. Finally, the characteristic frequency components are extracted by envelope spectrum analysis. The validation of the effectiveness of the proposed method is conducted on a public dataset across various bearing operating conditions. The verification results show that this method can accurately detect the conditions of bearings, and extract more distinctive characteristic frequency components compared with some relevant techniques.

Abstract:The failure of rolling bearings is one of the most important factors for rotating machinery breakdown. The detection of initial fault in rolling bearings is crucial for the further prevention of equipment malfunction and failure. In this study, a new rolling bearing fault diagnosis method based on the singular value decomposition, slip Hankel matrix series construction and maximum singular value energy analysis is proposed. It has been validated that the proposed method has an excellent impulse recognition capacity, which can be further applied to design the optimal band-pass filter for rolling bearing fault diagnosis. Then, the minimum entropy deconvolution (MED) technique is introduced to improve the fault extraction ability of the proposed method. Simulated signals and artificial fault tests are used to prove the capacity of the new method for rolling bearing fault detection. Furthermore, the result of accelerated life test indicates the initial bearing fault can be recognised by the proposed method, while the envelope spectrum cannot directly distinguish the failure type because of the redundant frequency interference. It can be concluded that the proposed method has the effectiveness of initial fault identification and redundant frequency elimination for rolling bearing fault diagnosis.

Abstract:Rolling element bearings are of great importance and widely used in rotating machineries, whose fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) are essential for insuring reliability of the entire mechanical system. Therefore, extracting fault-related transient features from noisy signals to reveal bearing weak fault is a crucial prerequisite for long term condition monitoring. However, in complex working conditions, the measured acoustic signals are typically multi-component, submerged by strong interference noise and affected by unknown transmission path, resulting in the indistinctive fault-induced features and unsatisfactory diagnosis accuracy. To tackle this problem, a sparsity-oriented Multipoint Optimal Minimum Entropy Deconvolution Adjusted (MOMEDA) method is proposed for bearing fault feature enhancement and diagnosis based on acoustic signals. As a non-iterative blind deconvolution approach, MOMEDA has been proven to be an effective tool to extract fault-related impulses from the noisy signal and compensate the complex unknown transmission path, enabling target propositioning and fault indication of bearings at an earlier termination condition. Furthermore, a sparsity operation which is originally designed for acoustic signal analysis, based upon the Laplace distribution characteristics of the fault-induced outliers, can further suppress the noise component and enhance the periodic fault impulses. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed sparsity-oriented MOMEDA method is validated by both simulated and experimental data. It is worth mentioning that bearing cage fault diagnosis and bearing mixed fault diagnosis, usually receiving limited attention before, are also investigated by the proposed method. The results demonstrate that the presented method gets preferable performance than existing methods, and it can achieve robust FDD of rolling bearings based on acoustic signals.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The fault vibration signal of rolling bearing is typical non-stationary and non-linear signals. It usually exhibits the characteristics of amplitude modulation and frequency modulation (AM-FM) due to the interaction between the various components within the bearing and modulation of the rotor speed. In addition, the incipient weak fault feature information is inevitably masked by the strong background noise and other vibration interference because of the influence of the working environment of mechanical equipment. Therefore, new high efficiency and effective processing methods are indispensable for feature extraction of bearing fault diagnosis signals. Direct fast iterative filtering (dFIF) is a new kind of adaptive mode decomposition method proposed by Antonio Cicone based on iterative filtering (IF) and fast iterative filtering (FIF). dFIF is used to quickly decompose multi-component signals into a set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) by means of fast Fourier transform (FFT). In order to study the decomposition performance and examine the feature extraction ability of the dFIF method, a group of harmonic signals with simple linear superposition, multi-components AM-FM signals with different data length and different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are simulated and analyzed. For comparison, other mode decomposition methods were also applied to the simulated signals, such as adaptive local iterative filtering (ALIF), local mean decomposition (LMD), and empirical mode decomposition (EMD). The results show that dFIF decomposition methods have faster decomposition speed and better accuracy than other methods. Furthermore, the results also demonstrate excellent performance in AM-FM feature extraction and anti-mode mixing. On the other hand, the effective weighted sparseness kurtosis (EWSK) index integrates the periodicity and intensity of impact in each mode, which can effectively identify the effective mode. Therefore, considering the above merits, EWSK is integrated on the dFIF to effectively accomplish the fault diagnosis for rolling bearing under strong background noise. Firstly, the raw vibration signals of rolling bearing fault are decomposed into a set of IMFs by using dFIF. The EWSK indicator is then utilized to select IMFs with rich bearing fault impulse information for reconstruction. Finally, the Hilbert envelope demodulation analysis is used to analyze the reconstructed signal, extract the bearing fault feature and then judge the fault type. This proposed method is applied to analyze the simulated and field measured vibration signals of rolling bearing faults. Simultaneously, the other above-mentioned adaptive TFA methods are also adopted to analyze the signals. The results compared show that the proposed method has excellent performance in the aspects of decomposition speed and accuracy under the influence of strong background noise. It demonstrates the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method for signal processing and fault pattern recognition of rolling bearings.

Abstract:<p>Extracting incipient fault features of rolling bearings is a hard work as the impact compositions in vibration signals are faint and disturbed by a lot of environmental noise. An adaptive variational mode decomposition and Teager energy operator method (AVMD-TEO) for diagnosing incipient fault of rolling bearings is proposed. Firstly, the minimum average envelope entropy is used as the fitness value to search the optimal parameters of VMD adaptively by grey wolf optimization algorithm. Subsequently, the efficient weighted kurtosis index is introduced to select the efficient modal components for signal reconstruction. Finally, the reconstructed signal is processed by Teager energy operator to enhance the faint transient impact compositions and identify the defect frequency. The superiority of AVMD in parameters selection compared with fixed-parameter VMD and maximum weighted kurtosis optimized VMD is verified by simulated signal analysis. Results from the cases show that the peak signal-to-noise ratio and fault characteristic coefficient obtained by the proposed method are increased by 8% to 229% and 37% to 258% respectively compared with some traditional methods. The proposed AVMD-TEO can effectively reduce signal noise and extract incipient fault feature of rolling bearings.</p>

Abstract:To accurately extract fault information from rolling bearing (RB) vibration signals with strong nonlinear and non-stationary characteristics, a novel method using adaptive variational mode decomposition with noise suppression and fast spectral correlation (AVMDNS-FSC) is proposed. The AVMDNS algorithm can adaptively select VMD parameters K and α, which reduces the error caused by the improper selection of VMD parameters based on experience or prior knowledge of the signal. Meanwhile, the AVMDNS also effectively suppresses noise in IMFs and avoid unexpected removal of the IMFs containing important fault information. In addition, the FSC can further suppress residual noise and interference harmonics to enhance the periodic fault pulses and hence accurately extract bearing fault features. Simulation analysis and experimental studies are carried out through comparison with other methods. Results show that the AVMDNS-FSC method has higher sensitivity and effectiveness in extracting early periodic fault pulses of RB vibration signals.

Abstract:In order to extract and enhance the weak fault feature of rolling element bearings in strong noise conditions, the Empirical Wavelet Transform (EWT) is improved and a novel fault feature extraction and enhancement method is proposed by combining the Maximum Correlated Kurtosis Deconvolution (MCKD) and improved EWT method. At first, the MCKD method is conducted to de-noise the signal by eliminating the non-impact components. Then, the Fourier spectrum is segmented by local maxima or minima in the envelope of the amplitude spectrum with a pre-set threshold based on the noise level. By building up the wavelet filter banks based on the spectrum segmentation result, the signal is adaptively decomposed into several sub-signals. Finally, by choosing the most meaningful sub-signal with the maximum kurtosis, the fault feature can be extracted in the squared envelope spectrum and teager energy operator spectrum of the chosen component. Both simulations and experiments are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. It is shown that the spectrum segmentation result of improved EWT is more reasonable than the traditional EWT in strong noise conditions. Furthermore, compared with commonly used methods, such as the Fast Kurtogram (FK) and the Optimal Wavelet Packet Transform (OWPT) method, the proposed method is more effective in the fault feature extraction and enhancement of rolling element bearings.

Abstract:The early fault diagnosis of rolling bearings has always been a difficult problem due to the interference of strong noise. This paper proposes a new method of early fault diagnosis for rolling bearings with entropy participation. First, a new signal decomposition method is proposed in this paper: intrinsic time-scale decomposition based on time-varying filtering. It is introduced into the framework of complete ensemble intrinsic time-scale decomposition with adaptive noise (CEITDAN). Compared with traditional intrinsic time-scale decomposition, intrinsic time-scale decomposition based on time-varying filtering can improve frequency-separation performance. It has strong robustness in the presence of noise interference. However, decomposition parameters (the bandwidth threshold and B-spline order) have significant impacts on the decomposition results of this method, and they need to be artificially set. Aiming to address this problem, this paper proposes rolling-bearing fault diagnosis optimization based on an improved coyote optimization algorithm (COA). First, the minimal generalized refined composite multiscale sample entropy parameter was used as the objective function. Through the improved COA algorithm, optimal intrinsic time-scale decomposition parameters based on time-varying filtering that match the input signal are obtained. By analyzing generalized refined composite multiscale sample entropy (GRCMSE), whether the mode component is dominated by the fault signal is determined. The signal is reconstructed and decomposed again. Finally, the mode component with the highest energy in the central frequency band is selected for envelope spectrum variation for fault diagnosis. Lastly, simulated and experimental signals were used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:As the transient impulse components in early fault signals are weak and easily buried by strong background noise, the fault features of rolling bearings are difficult to be extracted effectively. Focusing on this issue, a novel method based on improved direct fast iterative filtering and spectral amplitude modulation (IDFIF-SAM) is presented for detecting the early fault of rolling bearings. First, the ratio of the average crest factor of autocorrelation envelope spectrum to the average envelope entropy is taken as the fitness function to search the optimal parameters of direct fast iterative filtering (DFIF) adaptively via particle swarm optimization (PSO). Then, the efficient kurtosis entropy (EKE) index is being employed to choose the suitable components to reconstruct the signal. Finally, the reconstructed signal is subjected to spectral amplitude modulation (SAM) to strengthen the impulse features. The superiority of improved direct fast iterative filtering (IDFIF) over fixed-parameter DFIF, fast iterative filtering (FIF), and hard thresholding fast iterative filtering (HTFIF) is clarified through the simulated signal. Moreover, the comparative experimental analysis shows that the proposed IDFIF-SAM method can identify the early fault feature of rolling bearings more effectively.

Abstract:Purpose Early fault detection of bearing plays an increasingly important role in the operation of rotating machinery. Based on the properties of early fault signal of bearing, this paper aims to describe a novel hybrid early fault detection method of bearings. Design/methodology/approach In adaptive variational mode decomposition (AVMD), an adaptive strategy is proposed to select the optimal decomposition level K of variational mode decomposition. Then, a criterion based on envelope entropy is applied to select the optimal intrinsic mode functions (OIMF), which contains most useful fault information. Afterwards, local tangent space alignment (LTSA) is used to denoising of OIMF. The envelope spectrum of the OIMF is used to analyze the fault frequency, thereby detecting the fault. Experiments are conducted in a simulated signal and two experimental vibration signals of bearings to verify the effect of the new method. Findings The results show that the proposed method yields a good capability of detecting bearing fault at an early stage. The new method can extract more useful information and can reduce noise, which can provide better detection accuracy compared with the other two methods. Originality/value An adaptive strategy based on center frequency is proposed to select the optimal decomposition level of variational mode decomposition. Envelope entropy is used to fault feature selection. Combining the advantage of the AVMD-envelope entropy and LTSA, which suits the nature of the early fault signal. So, the proposed method has better detection accuracy, which provides a good alternative for early fault detection of bearings.

Abstract:A method based on adaptive chirp mode decomposition (ACMD) and optimized multipoint optimal minimum entropy deconvolution adjusted (OMOMEDA) is proposed to diagnose the rolling bearing fault in the presence of strong background noise. First, ACMD based on the Gini index is used to separate the low resonance impulse component in the fault signal from the harmonic component and noise. After ACMD, the OMOMEDA process is performed on the low resonance impulse component to enhance the fault impulse. After OMOMEDA, the envelope analysis is conducted on the deconvoluted signal to determine the fault condition. It should be noted that OMOMEDA overcomes the parameters' artificial dependence of multipoint optimal minimum entropy deconvolution adjusted (MOMEDA) and realizes a superior optimization solution through two aspects of improvement. First, OMOMEDA introduces the augmented gray wolf optimizer and cuckoo search to achieve adaptive determination of the period parameter. Second, OMOMEDA defines balanced permutation entropy (BPE) and uses BPE as a fitness function for finding the best filter length. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method can accurately and effectively diagnose the rolling bearing fault in the presence of strong background noise.

Abstract:Rolling bearing is one of the most fragile parts in rotating machinery. Rotating machinery faults are closed related to the malfunction of bearings, which will influence the stability of the whole machine. Therefore, it is important that we detect the existence of faults and diagnose features of different faults. The method applied in this paper is based on the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD), the first step in Hilbert-Huang Transform, to decompose fault signal into the sum of Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMF). The IMFs that contain major bearing faults will be analyzed in frequency domain to abstract their featured fault frequencies. The result of simulation indicates that this method is effective in diagnosing normal bearing out of outer-race fault bearing and inner-race fault bearing.
Axonal regeneration in spinal cord injury: A perspective and new technique

Abstract:A set of techniques is described for determining the response of mammalian spinal axons to transection. The logical‐selection and the advantages of these techniques are discussed. The dorsal column of guinea pig thoracic spinal cord was transected with a tungsten needle and the position of the lesion was marked by a staple‐shaped wire device (Foerster: J. Comp. Neurol 210:335–356, '82). The morphology of dorsal column axons projecting rostrally toward the lesion was examined between 1 and 50 days postlesion by anterograde staining with horseradish peroxidase, applied to a second lesion of the dorsal column two to three vertebral segments caudal to the first. Axons damaged by the original lesion were found to die back 1–2 mm from the plane of transection and at 18–20 hours were characterized by terminal club‐shaped swellings attached to the proximal axon by a thin connection. At 50 days postlesion there was some evidence of limited regenerative responses in terms of growth‐cone‐like axon terminals, and the presence of aberrant axonal branching, but no evidence of regenerating axons approaching close to the plane of transection. These findings are in agreement with previous studies indicating little or no effective regrowth of myelinated axons in the mammalian spinal cord. These same techniques were used in a succeeding study to examine the effects of applied electric fields on the axonal response to transection.

Abstract:A rolling element signal has a long transmission path in the acquisition process. The fault feature of the rolling element signal is more difficult to be extracted. Therefore, a novel weak fault feature extraction method using optimized variational mode decomposition with kurtosis mean (KMVMD) and maximum correlated kurtosis deconvolution based on power spectrum entropy and grid search (PGMCKD), namely KMVMD-PGMCKD, is proposed. In the proposed KMVMD-PGMCKD method, a VMD with kurtosis mean (KMVMD) is proposed. Then an adaptive parameter selection method based on power spectrum entropy and grid search for MCKD, namely PGMCKD, is proposed to determine the deconvolution period T and filter order L. The complementary advantages of the KMVMD and PGMCKD are integrated to construct a novel weak fault feature extraction model (KMVMD-PGMCKD). Finally, the power spectrum is employed to deal with the obtained signal by KMVMD-PGMCKD to effectively implement feature extraction. Bearing rolling element signals of Case Western Reserve University and actual rolling element data are selected to prove the validity of the KMVMD-PGMCKD. The experiment results show that the KMVMD-PGMCKD can effectively extract the fault features of bearing rolling elements and accurately diagnose weak faults under variable working conditions.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that incipient fault signals of rolling bearings are often drowned by strong noise, a rolling bearing incipient fault diagnosis method is proposed by combing an ARIMA based empirical mode decomposition algorithm and an improved variational mode decomposition algorithm (AEMD-IVMD). Firstly, the so-called AEMD algorithm was introduced to deal with the end effect problem of traditional EMD by extending the length at both ends of the decomposed IMF components, and a denoising vibration signal could be obtained by selecting and restructuring these selected sensitive IMF components. Secondly, an improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm was proposed to solve the problem of difficult parameter selection of VMD algorithm, and which was the above IVMD algorithm. Then, the IVMD algorithm was used to decompose these de-noising vibration signal by AEMD and several new IMF components could be obtained to get secondary denoising vibration signals by restructuring these selected new sensitive IMF components once again. Finally, the experimental verification of the proposed method was carried out by using the collected vibration signals, and the Hilbert envelope analysis was compared with the traditional EMD and EEMD. The experimental results showed that the proposed method is more suitable for incipient fault diagnosis of rolling bearings than the traditional EMD and EEMD.

Abstract:Periodic impulses in vibration signals and its repeating frequency are the key indicators for diagnosing the localized damage of rolling element bearings. Traditional envelope spectrum is effective in fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings, but it needs optimization of filter parameters which is complicated. The signal is firstly decomposed into mono-components by means of EEMD, then the obtained first intrinsic mode function is analyzed by means of envelope spectrum to identify the repeating frequency of fault induced periodic impulses and thereby to diagnose bearing faults. Its effectiveness in extracting the characteristic frequency of bearing faults, and especially its performance in identifying the symptoms of weak faults, are validated by the experimental signal analyses of seeded fault experiments.

Abstract:Rolling bearings are prone to failure due to harsh working environments, which can affect production efficiency. Given the background environmental noise interference, it is difficult to extract the fault characteristics of rolling bearings in the early stages of weak fault signals. Based on adaptive VMD combined with adaptive IMCKD (AVMD-AIMCKD), a rolling bearing fault diagnosis method is proposed in this paper. The vibration signal from the rolling element bearing is processed by adaptive variational modal decomposition (AVMD) to extract and select the time-frequency domain signal characteristics. The Adaptive Improved maximum correlated kurtosis deconvolution (AIMCKD) algorithm is used for noise reduction optimization to obtain the best extraction results. Because the traditional method requires input parameter values for VMD and IMCKD, it is not adaptive. The particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) is utilized in this study to optimize two variables: the penalty factor and decomposition mode number of variable mode decomposition (VMD). The filter length and shift order of the improved maximum correlated kurtosis deconvolution (IMCKD) are optimized to make it adaptive. The viability of the method is substantiated through simulations, and the efficacy and precision are validated by comparative studies. The experimental results show that the AVMD-AIMCKD method has high accuracy and robustness in rolling bearing fault diagnosis and provides an accurate reference for rolling bearing health monitoring in engineering practice. The AVMD-AIMCKD method effectively extracts the early fault features through adaptive optimization, overcomes the restrictions of traditional methods, and provides a more accurate and reliable tool for bearing fault signal diagnosis.

Abstract:The operation of rolling bearings is directly related to the reliability of the whole rotating machinery. If the rolling bearing failure cannot be diagnosed and repaired in time, it will probably lead to equipment shutdown. The feature extraction process is an important part of bearing fault diagnosis. Some existing feature extraction methods are sensitive to noise and interference, and cannot fully explore and characterize useful information in nonlinear and non-stationary signals in complex scenes, and sometimes even lose important information contained in the data, resulting in low diagnostic accuracy. Therefore, a new method combining Maximum Second-order Cyclostationarity Blind Deconvolution (CYCBD) and Complementary Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (CEEMD) was proposed for feature extraction of rolling bearing faults. Firstly, the cyclic frequency is set according to the failure frequency, and the original signal is filtered by CYCBD. Then, the filtered signal is decomposed into multiple Intrinsic Mode Function (IMF) by CEEMD, and the effective IMF components are selected by kurtosis criterion for reconstruction. Finally, the Teager energy operator is used to enhance the transient impact of the reconstructed signals. The results of simulation and comparison experiments show that the proposed method can extract bearing characteristics in different fault states more effectively, and the accuracy of network model diagnosis is improved compared with the traditional methods.

Abstract:Vibration signals of rolling element bearing’s early weak fault are often submerged by some interference components. To extract early weak fault features accurately, a weak fault feature enhancement method of rolling element bearing based on resonance sparse decompositionand multi-objective information frequency band selection is proposed. This method makes full use of resonance sparse decomposition in filtering the interferences and multi-objective information frequency band selection in enhancing impulsive and cyclostationary features of rolling element bearing’s early weak fault simultaneously. First, resonance sparse decomposition is used as the preprocessing program of multi-objective information frequency band selection to filter the interferences (such as rotating frequency with its harmonics) of rolling element bearing’s early weak fault characteristic components. Then, the filtered components containing main fault information are analyzed by MIFBS to establish the best band-pass filter. Finally, the envelope spectrum analysis is applied on the filtered vibration signal, and the fault characteristic frequency with its harmonics is extracted. To achieve the optimal output parameters of multi-objective information frequency band selection, fusion indexes based on time- and frequency-domain estimators are proposed and used to balance the enhancement of impulsive and cyclostationary characteristics of rolling element bearing’s early weak fault signals. Compared with most of the existing methods mainly based on single time-domain estimators or frequency-domain estimators to improve performance spectral kurtosis, the proposed fusion indexes overcome their defects and could enhance the impulsive and cyclostationary features of rolling element bearing’s early weak fault simultaneously. Effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through simulation and experiment. Besides, its advantage over the other related methods is also presented.
