Abstract:Anaerobic digestion is an alternative technology for the pretreatment of waste activated sludge (WAS) before final disposal. Hydrolysis is the rate-limiting step in this process; therefore, pretreatment of WAS to allow for high-efficiency anaerobic digestion is beneficial. In the present work, an electrochemical system characterized by a gas diffusion cathode (GDC) was established to facilitate WAS pretreatment. This GDC was composed of a carbon black diffusion layer and a Ni/NiOx catalytic layer. H2O2, an essential component of the pretreatment, was evolved on the electrode surface at a rate of 27.3 mg cm(-2) day(-1). Upon varying the potential of the GDC from 0 to -1.0 V (versus Ag/AgCl), the soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and the protein and carbohydrate concentrations increased from 134 +/- 6, 38 +/- 6, and 20 +/- 3 mg/L to 3617 +/- 65, 1436 +/- 121, and 470 +/- 64 mg/L, respectively, over 8 h. The ratio of SCOD to the total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) was 48 1.3%. The total methane output of the GDC pretreated sludge at the end of 10 days was close to 234 mL/g TCOD, which was 33.8% greater than that of the control sludge. The Ni/NiOx-modified GDC also exhibited excellent stability performance. The results of this work demonstrate the pivotal role of the combination of H2O2 and alkali generated by the GDC in the enhanced pretreatment of WAS.
Peracetic acid (PAA)-based pretreatment effectively improves medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) production from sewage sludge

Abstract:Peracetic acid (PAA), known for its environmentally friendly properties as a oxidant and bactericide, is gaining prominence in decontamination and disinfection applications. The primary product of PAA oxidation is acetate that can serve as an electron acceptor (EA) for the biosynthesis of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) via chain elongation (CE) reactions. Hence, PAA-based pretreatment is supposed to be beneficial for MCFAs production from anaerobic sludge fermentation, as it could enhance organic matter availability, suppress competing microorganisms and furnish EA by providing acetate. However, such a hypothesis has rarely been proved. Here we reveal that PAA-based pretreatment leads to significant exfoliation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from sludge flocs and disruption of proteinic secondary structures, through inducing highly active free radicals and singlet oxygen. The production of MCFAs increases substantially to 11,265.6 mg COD L-1, while the undesired byproducts, specifically long-chain alcohols (LCAs), decrease to 723.5 mg COD L-1. Microbial activity tests further demonstrate that PAA pretreatment stimulates the CE process, attributed to the up-regulation of functional genes involved in fatty acid biosynthesis pathway. These comprehensive findings provide insights into the effectiveness and mechanisms behind enhanced MCFAs production through PAA-based technology, advancing our understanding of sustainable resource recovery from sewage sludge.
Synergistic effects of peracetic acid and free ammonia pretreatment on anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge to promote short-chain fatty acid production for polyhydroxyalkanoate biosynthesis: Mechanisms and optimization

Abstract:Peracetic acid (PAA) combined with free ammonia (FA) pretreatment can be utilized to promote anaerobic fermentation (AF) of waste activated sludge (WAS) to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and the resulting SCFAs are desirable carbon sources (C-sources) for polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biosynthesis. This work aimed to determine the optimum conditions for PAA + FA pretreatment of sludge AF and the feasibility of using anaerobic fermentation liquor (AFL) for PHA production. To reveal the mechanisms of integrated pretreatment, the impacts of PAA + FA pretreatment on different stages of sludge AF and changes in the microbial community structure were explored. The experimental results showed that the maximum SCFA yield reached 491.35 ± 6.02 mg COD/g VSS on day 5 after pretreatment with 0.1 g PAA/g VSS +70 mg FA/L, which was significantly greater than that resulting from PAA or FA pretreatment alone. The mechanism analysis showed that PAA + FA pretreatment promoted sludge solubilization but strongly inhibited methanogenesis. According to the analysis of the microbial community, PAA + FA pretreatment changed the microbial community structure and promoted the enrichment of bacteria related to hydrolysis and acidification, and Proteiniclasticum, Macellibacteroides and Petrimonas became the dominant hydrolytic and acidifying bacteria. Finally, after alkali treatment, the AFL was utilized for batch-mode PHA production, and a maximum PHA yield of 55.05 wt% was achieved after five operation periods.

Abstract:Anaerobic co-digestion of excess sludge (ES) and food waste (FW) has been proven to be a clean and efficient strategy for the resource recovery of organic waste. However, the methane production from the anaerobic co-digestion of ES and FW is not optimal. This study reports a new strategy of using peracetic acid (PAA) pretreatment to enhance the anaerobic co-digestion of ES and FW and reveals the underlying mechanisms. The results confirm that PAA can effectively promote the production of methane from the anaerobic co-digestion of ES and FW, with the maximum methane yield reaching 416 mL/g volatile suspended solids at a PAA content of 9% (w/w). Mechanistic analysis indicates that PAA efficiently facilitates the solubilization of organic matter, promoting the release of soluble proteins and polysaccharides, and accelerating the metabolic conversion of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) to prevent excessive acidification. The maximum output of VFA in the PAA group was 1,511–1,974 mg/L, which was lower than that in the control group. Batch experimental analysis revealed that PAA promoted the hydrolysis and acidification processes, but inhibited the methanogenic process. The PAA pretreatment technique provides a theoretical basis for the efficient treatment of organic matter in urban areas.

Abstract:In order to evaluate comprehensively the impact of calcium peroxide (CP) on anaerobic digestion (AD) of primary sludge (P-sludge) and secondary sludge (S-sludge) of anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic process, a series of batch experiments were conducted in the lab scale. Results showed that CP pretreatment could kill Fecal Coliform completely in 72.0 h and promote the solubilization of S-sludge more significantly than P-sludge. Compared with the control, the maximum CH4 production potential and the maximum specific CH4 production rate of P-sludge AD only increased by 11.2 % and 6.10 %, respectively, but those of S-sludge AD increased by 40.7 % and 58.4 % after the same pretreatment, indicating that CP pretreatment was more conducive to methane production of S-sludge. Moreover, the increase of alkalinity and initial acetate concentration of S-sludge was greater than that of P-sludge after pretreatment according to the process analysis of hydrolysis. Notably, CP pretreatment reduced the PO43−-P concentration and chromaticity in the AD supernatant of both sludges, which was beneficial to the subsequent treatment of biogas slurry. In addition, CP pretreatment increased the content of total nutrient and decreased the content of harmful heavy metals in both biogas residues. Conclusively, compared with P-sludge, CP pretreatment is more suitable for S-sludge AD. This work firstly provides a comprehensive evaluation of CP pretreatment to waste sludge produced in anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic process of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), which is of great significance in enriching the pretreatment technology of waste sludge and promoting the application of CP pretreatment in WWTP.

Abstract:Suitable waste activated sludge (WAS) pretreatments that boost short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production from anaerobic fermentation are essential for carbon emission reduction and sludge resource utilization. This study established an efficient WAS pretreatment process combining atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) with peracetic acid (PAA). The maximum SCFA production (6.5-fold that of the control) largely increased under the optimal conditions (PAA dosage = 25 mg/g VSS (volatile suspended solids), energy consumption = 20.9 kWh/m 3 ). APPJ/PAA pretreatment enhanced the production of multiple reactive species (including OH, CH 3 C(O)O, 1 O 2 , ONOO – , O 2 – , and e aq − ) and strengthened the effects of H 2 O 2 , heat, and light. This synergistically solubilized WAS and released organic substrates for SCFA-producing microbes. In addition, the enrichment of SCFA-producing bacteria and the decrease in SCFA-consuming bacteria favored SCFA accumulation. The key genes encoding for the main substrate metabolism and SCFA production in the metabolic pathway of fermentation were also enhanced.

Abstract:Although various pretreatments have been applied to promote the anaerobic digestion of waste active sludge (WAS), the mechanisms regarding the impact of pretreatment on anaerobic digestion have not been well addressed. In this study, the effects of acid, alkali, and thermal pretreatments on anaerobic digestion of WAS were comprehensively investigated from the perspectives of organic matter composition, thermodynamics, and multi-omics. Results showed acid, alkali, and thermal pretreatments increased the methane production potential of WAS by 53.7%, 98.2%, and 101.8%, respectively, compared with the control. The protein secondary structure was disrupted after pretreatment, with a shift from α-helix and β-sheet to random coil and antiparallel β-sheet/aggregated strands. Thermodynamically, the WAS flocculation process was controlled by the short-range interfacial interactions described by the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory, which was positively correlated (R = 0.97, p < 0.05) with the organic matter solubilization of the WAS. After pretreatment, the flocculation energy barrier of pretreated WAS was 4.1 (acid), 7.0 (alkali) and 7.1 (thermal) times higher than that of the control group, respectively. Multi-omics analysis confirmed that pretreatment promoted amino acids (tryptophan, tyrosine, phenylalanine, aspartate, glutamate) metabolism, energy metabolism (ABC transporters) and vitamin metabolism. Moreover, the comparison of upregulated differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) revealed that for amino acid metabolism, thermal treatment had the best promotion effect; for carbohydrate metabolism, alkali treatment had the best promotion effect; and for lipid metabolism, acid treatment was more advantageous, resulting in different anaerobic digestion efficiencies. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the impact of different pretreatments on WAS anaerobic digestion and has practical implication for the choice of proper pretreatment technology for biosolids.
Enhancing short‐chain fatty acids production via acidogenic fermentation of municipal sewage sludge: Effect of sludge characteristics and peroxydisulfate pre‐oxidation

Abstract:Graphical and Lay Summary Short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production via acidogenic fermentation was largely enhanced by a combination pretreatment of low‐dose peroxydisulfate (PDS) coupling with initial pH 10. Mechanism explorations showed that PDS pre‐oxidation not only promoted the solubilization and biodegradability of complex substrate, but also modified the microbial community structure throughout the fermentation process. This study first employed a combined pretreatment of low‐dose peroxy‐disulfate (PDS) and initial pH 10 to promote short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production via acidogenic fermentation using different types of sewage sludge as substrates. The experimental results showed that the yield of maximal SCFAs and acetate proportion after the combined pretreatment were 1513.82 ± 28.25 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L and 53.64%, and promoted by 1.28 and 1.56 times higher, respectively, compared to the sole initial pH 10 pretreatment. Furthermore, in terms of the disintegration degree of sewage sludge, it increased by more than 18% with the combined pretreatment compared to the pretreatment of sole initial pH 10. Waste‐activated sludge (WAS) from A2/O and Bardenpho processes were more biodegradable, explained by the 1.47‐ and 1.35‐times higher disintegration rate than those from oxidation ditch and they favored acetate dominant fermentation. Correlation analysis revealed a strong correlation (p ≤ 0.01) between SCFAs production and soluble COD, total proteins, proteins in soluble‐extracellular polymeric substances (SEPS), total polysaccharides, and polysaccharides in SEPS. Mechanism explorations showed that preoxidation with PDS enhanced the solubilization and biodegradability of complex substrates, and altered the microbial community structure during the fermentation process. Firmicutes and Tetrasphaera were proven to play a key role in improving SCFA production, especially in promoting acetate production by converting additional SCFAs into acetate. Additionally, the addition of PDS greatly promoted sulfur and iron‐related metabolic activities. Finally, the combined pretreatment was estimated to be a cost‐effective solution for reutilizing and treating Fe‐sludge.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of aeration pretreatment on the anaerobic digestion (AD) of swine manure, five pretreatment groups were established with dissolved oxygen (DO) in each group set to 0.0, 0.4, 0.8, 1.4, and 2.0 mg/L, respectively. The results demonstrated that compared to the non-aeration group, methane production increased to varying degrees with different aeration pretreatments (AP), with a maximum increase of 27.98% (DO = 2.0 mg/L). AP reduced the hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) content of biogas. The H 2 S concentration in the DO = 2.0 mg/L was only 0.209%, and this represented an increased H 2 S removal rate of 49.27% compared to that of the DO = 0.0 mg/L (0.412%). Simultaneously, AP increases the hydrolysis rate. When the DO concentration reached 2.0 mg/L, the hydrolysis rate reached its maximum. An increase in the hydrolysis rate further enhanced the removal rate of organic matter. The organic matter removal rate was highest (36.96%) at DO = 2.0 mg/L. AP effectively prolonged the methane generation time and shortened the lag time of methane generation. AP creates a brief micro aerobic environment, accelerates substrate hydrolysis, and promotes the production and consumption of total volatile fatty acids, particularly acetic acid. Additionally, AP promoted the symbiotic relationship between Caldicoprobacter (20.93%–34.96%) and Metanosaeta (14.73%–18.45%).

Abstract:In this study, the waste activated sludge (WAS) of wastewater treatment plants was pretreated with calcium peroxide (CP) for 48 h and then digested anaerobically at 35 ± 1 °C. The effects of CP pretreatment on the substrate, microenvironment, and microbial community in the anaerobic digestion (AD) system of WAS were investigated. Results showed that the total volatile fatty acids in the pretreated sludge increased by 8.95 times compared with that in the control. Evidently, pH and oxidation reduction potential (ORP) increased when the CP-pretreated sludge was further subjected to AD, where NO3 −−N and H2O2 reached 29.65 mg/L and 11.8 mg/L, respectively, but the catalase (CAT) activity was inhibited. Additionally, CP-pretreatment activated the nitrifying bacterial phylum, inhibited the denitrifying genera, and selected the specific methanogens. However, CH4 production was still enhanced by 19.10 % unexpectedly although higher ORP was maintained in the AD system for a long time, which challenged the classical theory of AD. The acceptable feedback of the sludge AD system on CP pretreatment may be related to the change in H2O2 and CAT activities.

Abstract:The prolonged reaction period and low methane yield have become a pivotal bottleneck in the anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste activated sludge (WAS), severely limiting its use in bioenergy. This study evaluated the long-term semi-continuous AD of WAS with isoelectric-point (pI) pretreatment in terms of the reaction period, methane yield, material resource recovery, and economic and environmental benefits. The experimental results show that after pI pretreatment, at the same solids retention time (SRT), the average methane yield and methane content in the biogas of WAS increased by 120.9% and 15.5%, respectively. The average methane yield from AD with pI pretreatment at a 5-day SRT was 1.6 times that of the AD without pI pretreatment at a 15-day SRT, indicating that pI pretreatment significantly (P < 0.001) increased the methane yield from the AD of WAS at different SRTs, even at an ultra-short SRT. Statistical analyses of the changes in the concentrations of soluble organic matter in the AD process with and without pI pretreatment confirmed that pI pretreatment enhanced the biochemical reactions related to the transformation of sludge organic matter during the whole AD process, but not the initial organic solubilisation and hydrolysis of the sludge. Furthermore, pI pretreatment recovered the NaHCO3, Na2S, and multivalent metals from the sludge, indicating that AD with pI pretreatment efficiently recovered both bioenergy and material resources from the sludge. Economic and environmental analyses of AD with and without pI pretreatment further indicated that with pI pretreatment, the annual economic benefit of AD increases by 162% and carbon emissions decreases by approximately 2.63 x 10(7 )kg CO2/year compared with conventional AD. These findings serve as an important reference for the development of a novel AD technology for sludge that incorporates second-generation pretreatment and operates at an ultra-short SRT.
Pseudotumour incidence, cobalt levels and clinical outcome after large head metal-on-metal and conventional metal-on-polyethylene total hip arthroplasty: mid-term results of a randomised controlled trial.

Abstract:We compared the incidence of pseudotumours after large head metal-on-metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasty (THA) with that after conventional metal-on-polyethylene (MoP) THA and assessed the predisposing factors to pseudotumour formation. From a previous randomised controlled trial which compared large head (38 mm to 60 mm) cementless MoM THA with conventional head (28 mm) cementless MoP THA, 93 patients (96 THAs: 41 MoM (21 males, 20 females, mean age of 64 years, standard deviation (sd) 4) and 55 MoP (25 males, 30 females, mean age of 65 years, sd 5) were recruited after a mean follow-up of 50 months (36 to 64). The incidence of pseudotumours, measured using a standardised CT protocol was 22 (53.7%) after MoM THA and 12 (21.8%) after MoP THA. Women with a MoM THA were more likely to develop a pseudotumour than those with a MoP THA (15 vs 7, odds ratio (OR) = 13.4, p < 0.001). There was a similar incidence of pseudotumours in men with MoM THAs and those with MoP THAs (7 vs 5, OR = 2.1, p = 0.30). Elevated cobalt levels (≥ 5 microgram/L) were only associated with pseudotumours in women with a MoM THA. There was no difference in mean Oxford and Harris hip scores between patients with a pseudotumour and those without. Contrary to popular belief, pseudotumours occur frequently around MoP THAs. Women with a MoM THA and an elevated cobalt level are at greatest risk. In this study, pseudotumours had no effect on the functional outcome after either large head MoM or conventional MoP THA.
Enhancing sludge fermentation and anaerobic digestion by mechanical cutting pretreatment

Abstract:A new sludge pretreatment approach was developed to disintegrate waste activated sludge by mechanical cutting in this study, and the effect of mechanical cutting pretreatment on sludge fermentation and anaerobic digestion was analysed. The study results showed that a sludge disintegration degree of 6.7 % was achieved when the sludge was mechanically cut for 8 min. Moreover, the sludge fermentation was promoted by mechanical pretreatment. After the pretreatment, the soluble COD (SCOD) production in the sludge fermentation system was as high as 3052 mg/L, which was 2.28 times higher than that of the control group. More short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), especially acetic acid, were observed in the pretreatment group. The mechanical pretreatment accelerated the sludge digestion process and increased biogas production, resulted in a maximum yield of 539.30 mL and 3.06 times higher than that of the control group. High-throughput sequencing results indicated that the microbial community composition in the sludge fermentation system was affected by the mechanical pretreatment, and these changes were conducive to sludge fermentation. The composition of methanogens in the anaerobic digestion reactors was changed by mechanical pretreatment, the relative abundance of Methanosaeta in the control group was 52.70 %, while that in the pretreatment group was as high as 94.05 %. The methanogens in the sludge anaerobic digestion system involving and without involving pretreatment was 5.47 × 107 and 5.12 × 107 copies/g, respectively. Overall, the mechanical pretreatment was beneficial for the enrichment of methanogens, especially acetotrophic Methanosaeta, and it increased methane production.

Abstract:The rapid transition towards modernization and industrialization led to an increase in urban population, resulting in paramount challenge to municipal sewage sludge management. Anaerobic digestion (AD) serves as a promising venue for energy recovery from waste-activated sludge (WAS). Addressing the challenge of breaking down floc structures and microbial cells is crucial for releasing extracellular polymeric substances and cytoplasmic macromolecules to facilitate hydrolysis and fermentation process. The present study aims to introduce a combined process of alkaline/acid pre-treatments and AD to enhance sludge digestion and biogas production. The study investigates the influence of alkali pretreatment at ambient temperature using four alkali reagents (NaOH, Ca(OH)2, Mg(OH)2, and KOH). The primary goal is to provide insights into the intricate interplay of alkali dosages (0.04-0.12 g/gTS) on key physic-chemical parameters crucial for optimizing the pre-treatment dosage. Under the optimized alkaline/acid pre-treatment condition, the TSS reduction of 18%-30% was achieved. An increase in sCOD concentration (24%-50%) signifies the enhanced hydrolysis and solubilization rate of organic substrate in WAS. Finally, the biomethane potential test (BMPT) was performed for pre-treated WAS samples. The maximum methane (CH4) yield was observed in combination A1 (244 mL/g) and D1 (253 mL/g), demonstrating the pivotal role of alkali optimization in enhancing AD efficiency. This study serves as a valuable resource to policymakers, researchers, and technocrats in addressing challenges associated to sludge management.

Abstract:Anaerobic bioconversion of waste activated sludge (WAS) into methane is often limited by the slow hydrolysis rate and/or poor methane potential. In this study, a novel pretreatment strategy based on the isoelectric point of sludge particulate is proposed to enhance methane production from WAS. Pretreatment of WAS for 4 h at room temperature substantially changed the physicochemical properties of sludge particulate, resulting in the disintegration of WAS. The experimental results showed that the apparent activation energy of sludge organic solubilization was decreased by 49.5% and the surface site density of sludge particulate was increased by 71.2%, indicating that by this pretreatment WAS solubilization was enhanced and the surface binding sites for enzymes were decreased. In addition, compared to the conventional pretreatment methods, the main metal contents of WAS were decreased by 41.4% after this pretreatment, suggesting the possibility of simultaneously enhancing methane conversion and removing heavy metals from WAS. The biochemical methane potential assays demonstrated that after pretreatment the hydrolysis and acidification of sludge were significantly improved, with the highest volatile fatty acid concentration (3364 +/- 28 mg/L) being more than twice that of the untreated samples. Model-based analysis indicated that pretreatment improved methane potential by approximately 19% (from 197.5 +/- 8.3 to 242.8 +/- 6.2 mL CH4/g volatile solids (VS)), thereby changing methane production kinetics. Further analysis indicated that after pretreatment the methanogenic bacteria growth, rather than the hydrolysis reaction of sludge, became the rate-limiting step in the anaerobic digestion (AD) process. These findings, however, may provide a new direction for enhancing the AD efficiency of WAS.
Role of pretreatment type and microbial mechanisms on enhancing volatile fatty acids production during anaerobic fermentation of refinery waste activated sludge

Abstract:This study compared the effects of alkaline, thermal, thermal-peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and alkyl polyglucose (APG) pretreatments on volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production from refinery waste activated sludge (RWAS), including VFAs yield, composition, organics components, microbial communities, and the potential improvement of mechanisms. All pretreatments effectively enhanced the bioconversion of RWAS and consequently promoted the hydrolysis process, which inhibited the methanogenesis process. However, the release of lignin/carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecules (CRAM)-like compounds and tannin substances in Thermal-PMS and APG groups significantly influenced the acidogenesis and acetogenesis processes. Among all pretreatments, alkaline pretreatment showed the highest VFAs yield of 95.06 mg/g volatile solids (VS) and VS removal of 17%. This result could be associated with the enrichment of functional hydrolytic-acidification bacteria, such as Planococcus and Soehngenia, and increased metabolism of amino acids, carbohydrates, and nucleotides. By considering an economical and efficient perspective, this study recommended the alkaline pretreatment for the anaerobic fermentation of RWAS.

Abstract:Pretreatment technologies for improving the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge have been studied extensively; however, studies on the improvement of pretreatment technology for primary sludge (PS) fermentation and anaerobic digestion are scarce. In this study, a novel mechanical cutting pretreatment (MCP) method was proposed to enhance the performance of PS fermentation and anaerobic digestion. PS was disintegrated by MCP, the average particle size of PS reduced from 45.7 µm to 7.0 µm, and soluble COD (SCOD) increased by 1206 mg/L with pretreatment for 8 min. The hydrolysis and acidification of PS was promoted significantly by MCP. Compared with the control group, the production of SCOD and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in the pretreatment group during sludge fermentation increased by 167% and 115.3%, respectively. The performance of PS anaerobic digestion was remarkably improved by MCP. The maximum cumulative biogas production in the pretreatment group was 3153 mL, which was 6.33 times that in the control group (498.5 mL). Sludge disintegration by mechanical pretreatment resulted in the enrichment of bacteria, especially Firmicutes, in the sludge fermentation system, and the quantity of bacteria in the pretreatment group was 1.95 times that in the control group. However, MCP had little effect on archaea in the anaerobic digestion of PS, and the methanogens in the control and pretreatment reactors were 1.493 × 109 and 1.519 × 109 copies/g, respectively.

Abstract:NaOH was used to disintegrate a mixture composed mainly of primary sludge with biofilm sludge before anaerobic digestion in batch experiments. NaOH pretreatment dissolved some organic substances, and the optimum dose was 0.1mol/L. After the alkali-treated sludge was fed into the digesters, the higher pH delayed the start of digestion and reduced the biogas production during the initial stage, although the system recovered after a lag phase when the dose was lower than 0.04mol/L. Acid conditioning was necessary, but the increased salinity also impacted on the digestion efficiency. For sludge pretreatment, the optimum NaOH dose was 0.1mol/L, and the initial pH of the batch digesters needs to be controlled at less than eight. Under optimized conditions, the organic degradation rate was 38.3% and the biogas yield was 0.65L/g volatile suspended solid (VSS), whereas these values for the control were 30.3% and 0.64L/g VSS, respectively.
