Abstract:The study on the state-of-art desalination membranes related to their fundamental structure, property and performance has been sparked by the demand for commercially attractive high-performance membranes. In this study, the surface of polyamide (PA) reverse osmosis (RO) membrane was modified by integrating tannic acid (TA) and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) to increase the water flux, anti-biofouling and antifouling properties of the membrane. The anti-biofouling properties was optimized by varying the duration required for the in-situ formation of Ag NPs on the surface grafted TA. The findings revealed that the PES/PA-TA-Ag(20 min) membrane prepared from the in-situ reduction of Ag precursor for 20 min exhibited the maximum flux of 20.56 L/ m(2)center dot h. The PES/PA-TA-Ag(40 min) membrane also demonstrated increased antibacterial ability as proven by an increase in the number of dead bacteria (48 +/- 1.71 mu m(3)/mu m(2)) and a reduction in biofilm thickness (1.6 +/- 0.12 mu m) for E. coli. The antifouling performance of the SA-fouled PES/PA-TA-Ag(40 min) membrane is appealing, with higher FRR of 98.05 % observed. Abstract:We developed a facile approach to synthesize thin-film nano-templated composite (TFNt) nanofiltration membrane with high water permeability, high NaCl/MgSO4 selectivity and strong antimicrobial properties. A polydopamine (PDA) coating on a polysulfone support was used as a nano-template to generate silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in situ with high loading and high uniformity. A subsequent interfacial polymerization reaction of piperazine and trimesoyl chloride was performed on this nano-template substrate to form the TFNt membrane. The TFNt membrane had significantly increased both the water permeability and salt rejection compared to the control thin-film composite (TFC) membrane as well as a thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane prepared by the conventional way of loading AgNPs directly during the interfacial polymerization process. Furthermore, the TFNt membrane showed better antimicrobial properties than both the TFC and the conventional TFN membranes. The current work presents an exciting approach to fabricate novel nanofiltration membranes using nano-templates, which provides important insights for high performance NF membrane synthesis.
Antibiofouling performance and mechanisms of a modified polyvinylidene fluoride membrane in an MBR for wastewater treatment: Role of silver@silica nanopollens

Abstract:Biofouling remains to be one of major obstacles in membrane bioreactors (MBRs), calling for the development of antibiofouling membranes. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), being a kind of broad spectrum bactericidal agent, have been widely used for modifying membrane; however, uncontrollable release of AgNPs and thus a short lifetime of modified membranes are thorny issues for the AgNPs-modified membranes. In this study, silica nanopollens were used as AgNPs nanocarriers for membrane modification (ASNP-M), which could improve silver delivery efficacy, avoid agglomeration and control Ag+ release towards bacteria. At a silver loading of 107.7 ± 10.9 μg Ag/cm2, ASNP-M effectively inhibited growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, with an Ag+ release rate of 0.5 μg/(cm2 d). Long-term MBR tests showed that ASNP-M exhibited a significantly reduced transmembrane pressure increase rate of 0.88 ± 0.34 kPa/d which was much lower than that of two control membranes, i.e., pristine membrane (M0) (2.32 ± 0.86 kPa/d) and Ag@silica nanospheres (without spikes) modified membrane (ASNS-M) (2.25 ± 1.28 kPa/d). No significant adverse influences on the pollutant removal were also observed in the reactor. Foulants analysis revealed that biofilm of ASNP-M was thinner and comprised of mainly dead cells, and only organic matter with strong adhesion properties was allowed to attach onto the membrane surface. Bacterial community analysis suggested that the incorporation of Ag@silica nanopollens inhibited colonization of bacteria which are capable of causing membrane biofouling (e.g., Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria). These findings highlight the potential of the antibiofouling membrane to be used in MBRs for wastewater treatment and reclamation.

Abstract:Membrane filtration exhibit operational limitations such as biofouling, which leads to concentration polarization and reduces permeability and selectivity, despite advantages such as low operating cost, high selectivity, and permeability. In recent years, the antibacterial properties of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been investigated for improving membrane processes; however, the fouling phenomena in presence of AgNPs in the membrane matrix have not been fully discussed. Herein, the antifouling properties of a poly (acrylonitrile-styrene) copolymer incorporated with AgNPs were studied in a microfiltration membrane process. The Creighton method was used to synthesize AgNPs, and the effects of AgNPs on the porosity, morphology, pore size, mechanical strength, permeability, and selectivity of the membranes were investigated. Moreover, to investigate the biofouling of the obtained membranes, microfiltration of industrial oily wastewater was performed at constant pressure over three cycles. Using AgNPs in the membrane matrix resulted in enhanced antifouling properties of the copolymer membrane, which is related to the structure of the AgNPs in the casting solution, as proven by SAXS analysis. The results show that the CFU% for Staphylococcus aureus and E.coli reach 2% and 6%, respectively. Finally, the Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) thermodynamic model was applied to study the antifouling mechanism, correctly predict the separation behavior in the membrane, and design, simulate, and optimize the separation processes in the membrane separation plantsa. The DLVO model could predict the separation behavior in the synthesized membranes, and the poly(acrylonitrile-styrene) copolymer membranes containing AgNPs were proven have promising industrial wastewater treatment applications.

Facile Modification of Thin-Film Composite Nanofiltration Membrane with Silver Nanoparticles for Anti-Biofouling

Abstract:This study focuses on the modification of a commercial nanofiltration (NF) membrane by an in-situ reaction to load silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) for anti-biofouling. Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was coated onto the NF membrane firstly, and silver salt was then deposited on the surface of PVA layer. Through thermal reduction, AgNPs with 10–20 nm in diameter were formed and immobilized onto the membrane surface by the interaction between AgNPs and PVA, as confirmed by UV–vis absorption spectrum, SEM and XPS analysis. Compared to the pristine NF90 membrane, the PVA composite membranes (NF90-PVA) and AgNPs (NF90-PVA-AgNPs) modified membranes exhibit lower water flux and slightly higher salt rejection. Release of silver ion experiments were assessed via batch method, and the results indicate silver ion can be released from the AgNPs modified membrane continuously and steadily, which may be responsible for the improved and long-time antibacterial ability of the membrane. Due to the simplicity of the method, the ability to immobilize the AgNPs to avoid leaching out, and the strong antibacterial activity, this NF90-PVA-AgNPs composite membrane displays potential applications in industrial water-treatment.
Enhanced MPBR with Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Graphene Oxide/pvdf Hollow Fiber Membrane for Efficient Ammonia Nitrogen Wastewater Treatment and High-Density Chlorella Cultivation

Abstract:Membrane fouling always as the main obstacle hinders wide application of membrane bioreactor (MBR). Development of antifouling membranes is a promising strategy to overcome this issue. In this study, novel polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-graphene oxide (GO)/PVDF hollow fiber membrane with enhanced hydrophilicity and antifouling property was synthesized by assembling PVP-GO nanocomposites via chemical grafting method. The PVP-GO/PVDF membrane was successfully applied into algae-membrane photo-bioreactor (MPBR) with solids retention times (SATs) of 30 d for high ammonia-nitrogen wastewater treatment at hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 24 h. The permeability, removal performance and influence on extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) of algae-MPBR with modified PVDF membrane were compared to a control traditional system operated in parallel. Compared with pristine PVDF membrane, PVP-GO/PVDF membrane exhibited improved hydrophilicity (contact angle decreased from 97 to 62 degrees), better permeability (1.7 times) and attractive flux recover rate (96%) in MPBR filtration, which was attributed to uniformly dispersed PVP-GO nanocomposites as spatial brushes for mitigating foulants on membrane surface. In terms of contaminants degradation, COD, NH4-N+ and NO3-N removal efficiency of algae-MPBR with modified membranes were kept above 97.8, 93.1 and 68.7%, much higher than traditional MBR. Moreover, remarkable reduction in hydrophobic proteins amount of EPS on fouling layer was observed for PVP-GO/PVDF membrane. The biomass concentration was maintained around 780 mg/L after 16 days and average biomass production rate reached as high as 45 mg/L d. These results indicated that PVP-GO/PVDF membrane exhibited superior antifouling performance for high-density microbes harvesting and efficient treatment for high ammonia-nitrogen wastewater.

Abstract:In this work, Ag nanoparticle loading Mg(C 10 H 16 O 4 ) 2 (H 2 O) 2 (Ag@MOF) composite material was successfully prepared by a facile strategy, and subsequently Ag-MOFs were used to modify the PVDF ultrafiltration membranes to obtain fouling resistance and higher water flux. The as-prepared PVDF membranes were systematically characterized by a series of analytical techniques such as Water Contact Angle (CA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and SEM-mapping. Furthermore, the performance of membranes on antibacterial properties, the pure water flux, and fouling resistance was investigated in detail. Those results showed that the membrane modified by Ag@MOFs containing 30% Ag had the higher anti-bacterial performance, and the clear zone could be increased to 10 mm in comparison with that of blank membrane. Meanwhile, the pure water flux of Ag@MOF membranes increased from 85 L/m 2 h to 157 L/m 2 h, and the maximum membrane flux recovery rate (FRR) of 95.7% was obtained using SA as pollutant, which is attributed to the introduction of Ag@MOF composite material. Based on the above experimental results, it can be found that the Ag-MOF membranes displayed the excellent antibacterial activity, high water flux, and fine fouling resistance. This work provides a facile strategy to fabricate the Ag@MOFs modified membranes, and it shows an excellent anti-bacterial and water flux performance.

Surface modification of PES-nano ZnO membrane for enhanced performance in rubber wastewater treatment

Abstract:Modifications of PES-nano ZnO membranes have been carried out to improve their performances and stability. In this study, modification of the membrane by subjecting the membrane under UV irradiation and thermal treatment were investigated. The nano hybrid PES-nano ZnO membranes were fabricated via dry/wet phase inversion technique. The effects of nano-filler incorporation and surface modification on the membrane performances in term of flux and rejection were studied. The characteristics of the fabricated membranes were also invetigated. The SEM images showed that the membranes had asymmetric structure with finger-like micropores layer. The introduction of ZnO nanoparticles combined with surface modification significantly imrpoved the structural and morphological properties as well as the perm-selectivity performance. Membrane selectivity reached 87% for COD rejection, however the average flux value decreased to 2.42 L. m−2.h−1 with the increasing of thermal annealing time The best membrane performance was obtained on the composition of 17 wt % PES, 1% nano ZnO, 2 min of UV irradiation and thermal annealing at 180 °C for 0.5 minutes.
Characterization and Antibiofouling Performance Investigation of Hydrophobic Silver Nanocomposite Membranes: A Comparative Study

Abstract:Biofouling is one of the drawbacks restricting the industrial applications of membranes. In this study, different thicknesses of silver nanoparticles with proper adhesion were deposited on poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF) and polyethersulfone (PES) surfaces by physical vapor deposition (PVD). The crystalline and structural properties of modified and pure membranes were investigated by carrying out X-ray diffraction (XRD) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses were employed to examine the surface morphology and the bacteria anti-adhesion property of the membranes. The morphology measurements confirmed that even though after silver grafting the surface became more hydrophobic, the homogeneity increased and the flux reduction decreased after coating. Moreover a comparison between PVDF and PES revealed that CFU (colony forming units) reduced 64.5% on PVDF surface and 31.1% on PES surface after modification. In conclusion, PVD improved the performance of the membrane antibiofouling, and it is more promising to be used for PVDF rather than PES.

Abstract:Biofouling was a considerable issue in the water treatment by membrane technology. In this study, high anti-bacterial property Ag-MOF was synthesized followed by embedding into polyamide layer with vacuum-assisted interfacial polymerization process to prepare an Ag-MOF incorporated membrane. The successful preparation of Ag-MOF and membranes was verified by FT-IR, FESEM, XPS, XRD, BET, zeta potential and contact angle test. On account to the strong hydrophility, porous structure, electronegativity and antibacterial property of Ag-MOF, modified membranes showed excellent performance for dyes, salts and bacteria. The water permeability of modified membranes was increased from 9.2 to 14.3 L m-2h−1 bar−1 and the rejection rate of MO, MB and RB of the optimum membranes were 95.4%, 87.8% and 99.3%, respectively. The rejection rate of Na2SO4 and MgSO4 were increased from 54.0% and 36.6% to 84.1% and 73.1%. The sterilization rate of modified membranes to E. coli and S. aureus both exceeded 99%. The leaching test of Ag+ evaluated the potential mechanism of anti-bacterial property. Moreover, dynamic bio-fouling test were used to detect the actual status in the filtration process. Those results suggested that modified membranes showed a strong resistance to bio-foulants thus enlarged the scope of application of membranes for water treatment.

Synthesis and Characterization of Anti‐fouling Ultrafiltration Nanocomposite Membranes Integrated with S‐β Zeolite Nanoparticles for Oily Wastewater Treatment

Abstract:Incorporating S‐β zeolite nanoparticles into ultrafiltration membranes creates a protective water layer on the membrane surface by introducing S‐β1 zeolite nanoparticles to minimize the interaction between the oil and the membrane. This improvement in membrane surface hydrophilicity significantly enhances the ability to address fouling issues during oily wastewater treatment. Membrane separation has been proven to be highly effective in oily wastewater treatment, although fouling remains a persistent challenge. This study explored the incorporation of S‐β zeolite nanoparticles into an ultrafiltration membrane, forming a nanocomposite to tackle fouling and enhance water flux recovery. Porous nanoparticles were synthesized using sol‐gel and hydrothermal methods, featuring a remarkable surface area of 450 m2/g and pore sizes ranging from 50 to 175 nm according to BET results. These nanoparticles were integrated into the membranes at various concentrations using the phase inversion technique. The presence of S‐zeolite in the membrane was confirmed through FTIR, EDX, and SEM analyses. The S‐β1 nanocomposite membrane demonstrated exceptional antifouling properties, particularly at higher concentrations of oily wastewater. Its outstanding performance is attributed to its enhanced hydrophilicity and average pore size of 13±3 nm, which prevents fouling formation. Compared to other membranes, S‐β1 exhibited remarkable water flux recovery, reaching 100 % at an oil concentration of 50 ppm and 72 % at 1000 ppm. These results highlight the significant advantages of this nanocomposite in reducing fouling and improving the water flux recovery in oily wastewater treatment.

Modification of reinforced hollow fiber membranes with WO3 nanosheets for treatment of textile wastewater by membrane bioreactor

Abstract:In this study, performance of braid reinforced hollow fiber membrane containing polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) embedded with tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanosheets in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) was examined for textile wastewater treatment. The WO3 nanosheets was synthesized and blended at different concentrations (0.1-0.02 wt%) in casting solutions of the membranes. The WO3 nanosheets characterized using various tests such as XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDS, dot-mapping, and TEM. Furthermore, the effects of the increased WO3 nanosheets into the PVDF matrix on the membrane morphology, hydrophilicity, permeability, antifouling, and COD and color removal efficiency was investigated. The addition of 0.1 wt% of the nanosheets reduces the water contact angle from 69.3° to 62.5° while increasing overall porosity from 37.5 to 43.2%. COD and color removal for PVDF/0.10 wt% WO3 membrane was between 86-89% and 72-76%, respectively. While the TMP of modified WO3 membranes did not significantly increase due to antimicrobial properties of the WO3 nanosheets, the TMP of the pure PVDF membrane increase, indicating considerable cake layer fouling. The results of this study showed that modification of PVDF braid reinforced hollow fiber membrane using WO3 nanosheets is promising membrane for MBR systems.
Palladium-Zeolite nanofiber as an effective recyclable catalyst membrane for water treatment

Abstract:Zeolite is an exciting natural material due to its unique capability of ammonium nitrogen (NH3N) adsorption in water. In this study, multifunctional hybrid composites of zeolite/palladium (Ze/Pd) on polymer nanofiber membranes were fabricated and explored for sustainable contaminant removal. SEM and XRD demonstrated that zeolite and palladium nanoparticles were uniformly distributed and deposited on the nanofibers. NH3N recovery rate was increased from 23 to 92% when palladium coated zeolite was embedded on the nanofiber. Multifunctional nanofibers of Ze/Pd membranes were able to adsorb NH3N on the zeolites placed on the surface of fibers and palladium catalysts were capable of selective oxidation of NH3N to N2 gas. The cycling of NH3N adsorption-oxidation, high flux, hydrophilicity, and flexibility of the membrane makes it a strong candidate for water treatment.

Abstract:Membranes are an efficient way to treat emulsified heavy metal-based wastewater, but they generally come with a trade-off between permeability and selectivity. In this research, the amine and sulphonic groups on the inner and outer surface of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) were first modified by a chemical approach. Then, MSNs with amine and sulphonic groups were utilized as new inorganic nanofiller to fabricate mixed matrix polysulfone (PSU) nanocomposite membranes using the classical phase inversion approach. The resultant nanoparticles and membranes were characterized by their physico-chemical characteristics as well as determination of pure water permeability along with cadmium and zinc ion removal. Embedding nanoparticles resulted in a significant rise in the water permeability as a result of changes in the surface properties and porosity of the membrane. Furthermore, the efficiency of developed membranes to remove cadmium and zinc was significantly improved by more than 90% due to the presence of functional groups on nanoparticles. The functionalized-MSNs/PSU nanocomposite membrane has the potential to be an effective industrial effluent removal membrane.

Abstract:Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NP) are well-known for their efficacy as inorganic compounds with antifouling and antibacterial properties in membrane filtration. In this work, bio-zinc oxide nanoparticles (bio-ZnO NP) were synthesized using Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis miller) powder as a green reducing agent and zinc nitrate as a precursor through the sol–gel method. Subsequently, the bio-ZnO NP powder was incorporated into a polysulfone (PSf) polymer matrix membrane at varying weight percentages (0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 1.0 wt%). The results indicate that the addition of bio-ZnO NP to PSf enhances the size and complexity of finger-like structures, leading to an increase in tensile strength from 31.9 to 57.6 MPa. However, porosity also increases from 44.1 to 58.2% as the bio-ZnO/NP content rises from 0.1 to 0.5 wt%. Notably, the PSf/bio-ZnO NP membrane with 0.5 wt% concentration demonstrates the highest pure water flux (PWF) at 517.9 LMH with humic acid rejection reaching 99.9%. Furthermore, the incorporation of bio-ZnO NP significantly enhances antibacterial activity, as reflected in the inhibition ring diameter increasing from 24.2 to 48.3 mm with higher bio-ZnO/NP concentrations. Comprehensive Analysis of Spinel-Type Mixed Metal Oxide-Functionalized Polysulfone Membranes toward Fouling Resistance and Dye and Natural Organic Matter Removal

Abstract:Nanostructured polymeric membranes are of great importance in enhancing the antifouling properties during water filtration. Nanomaterials with tunable size, morphology and composition, surface modification, and increased functionality provide considerable opportunities for effective wastewater treatment. Thus, in this work, an attempt has been made to use spinel-structured MnCo2O4 as a nanofiller in the fabrication of nanostructured polysulfone (PSF) mixed matrix membranes and is investigated in terms of morphology, hydrophilicity, permeability, protein and natural organic matter separation, dye removal, and, finally, antifouling properties. The MnCo2O4 nanomaterials are synthesized and characterized via X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy and are loaded into a membrane matrix with varied concentrations (0 to 1.5 wt %). PSF nanocomposite membranes are prepared via a nonsolvent-induced phase-separation process. The results show an enhancement in hydrophilicity, porosity, and permeability with respect to the modified nanocomposite membranes because of oxygen-rich species in the membrane matrix, which increases affinity toward water. It was also found that the modified membranes display remarkably greater pure water flux (PWF) (220 L/m2 h), higher Congo red rejection coefficient (99.86%), higher humic acid removal (99.81%), higher fouling resistance, and a significant flux recovery ratio (FRR) (88%) when tested with bovine serum albumin protein when compared to a bare PSF membrane (30 L/m2 h PWF and 35% FRR). This is because the addition of MnCo2O4 nanoparticles into the polymeric casting solution yielded tighter PSF membranes with a denser skin layer and greater selectivity. Thus, the enhanced permeability, greater rejection coefficient, and antifouling properties show the promising potential of the fabricated PSF-spinel nanostructured membrane to be utilized in membrane technology for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The introduction of inorganic nanoparticles in polymeric dope solution for the fabrication process of membrane can potentially enhance the separation performances of membrane without negatively affecting its permeability. In this study, hollow fiber mixed matrix membranes were prepared by incorporating polyethersulfone (PES) membranes with silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles at different concentration. Prior to separation tests, the prepared membranes were characterized by SEM, EDX, DSC, water contact angle, and FTIR-ATR in order to study the impact of silica nanoparticles on the properties of the membranes. Bisphenol A (BPA) was selected as the subject compound of this study because it is one of the emerging pollutants that have been frequently detected in the water treatment plant (WTP). BPA was spike into the pre-treated water sample taken from the WTP and was used as the feed solution to evaluate the membrane performance in terms of water flux and removal rate. The addition of SiO2 was reported to improve the hydrophilicity of membrane and induce greater micro-voids formation in the membrane structures, leading to increased water flux during BPA filtration process. The presence of more silanol (Si-OH) and siloxane (Si-O-Si) bonding groups resulted from increased SiO2 contents in membrane has improved membrane adsorption rate and further increased BPA removal.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the use of surface-modified silica nanoparticles to improve the anti-fouling performance of PVDF ultrafiltration membranes. Here, fouling resistant nanoparticles were prepared by grafting monohydroxy-polydimethylsiloxane onto the surface of silica nanoparticles using Steglich esterification. The mixed matrix PVDF membranes were prepared at a range of nanoparticle concentrations (0, 1.6, 3.2, 6.3, and 11.8%) to understand how PDMS modified silica content affected membrane performance. The resulting hybrid membranes were characterised using a range of techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), water contact angle (CA), porosity, and pore size measurements, in order to determine how morphological features of the nanocomposite membranes affected fouling and pure water flux. Embedding silica nanoparticles resulted in a significant reduction in membrane fouling, including lower protein adsorption and a flux recovery ratio of 97 %. Although water flux was reduced by the addition of nanoparticles, the change in the porosity, mean pore size and the hydrophilicity of the membrane caused the rejection rate to be increased significantly. Together, these results are of particular benefit to the ultrafiltration industry, where improved antifouling and flux recovery can help reduce operating and maintenance costs in these membrane processes.
Investigation of Photocatalytic PVDF Membranes Containing Inorganic Nanoparticles for Model Dairy Wastewater Treatment

Abstract:Membrane separation processes are promising methods for wastewater treatment. Membrane fouling limits their wider use; however, this may be mitigated using photocatalytic composite materials for membrane preparation. This study aimed to investigate photocatalytic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based nanocomposite membranes for treating model dairy wastewater containing bovine serum albumin (BSA). Membranes were fabricated via physical coating (with TiO2, and/or carbon nanotubes, and/or BiVO4) and blending (with TiO2). Another objective of this study was to compare membranes of identical compositions fabricated using different techniques, and to examine how various TiO2 concentrations affect the antifouling and cleaning performances of the blended membranes. Filtration experiments were performed using a dead-end cell. Filtration resistances, BSA rejection, and photocatalytic cleanability (characterized by flux recovery ratio (FRR)) were measured. The surface characteristics (SEM, EDX), roughness (measured by atomic force microscopy, AFM), wettability (contact angle measurements), and zeta potential of the membranes were also examined. Coated PVDF membranes showed higher hydrophilicity than the pristine PVDF membrane, as evidenced by a decreased contact angle, but the higher hydrophilicity did not result in higher fluxes, unlike the case of blended membranes. The increased surface roughness resulted in increased reversible fouling, but decreased BSA retention. Furthermore, the TiO2-coated membranes had a better flux recovery ratio (FRR, 97%) than the TiO2-blended membranes (35%). However, the TiO2-coated membrane had larger total filtration resistances and a lower water flux than the commercial pristine PVDF membrane and TiO2-blended membrane, which may be due to pore blockage or an additional coating layer formed by the nanoparticles. The BSA rejection of the TiO2-coated membrane was lower than that of the commercial pristine PVDF membrane. In contrast, the TiO2-blended membranes showed lower resistance than the pristine PVDF membrane, and exhibited better antifouling performance, superior flux, and comparable BSA rejection. Increasing the TiO2 content of the TiO2-blended membranes (from 1 to 2.5%) resulted in increased antifouling and comparable BSA rejection (more than 95%). However, the effect of TiO2 concentration on flux recovery was negligible.

Abstract:Ultrafiltration polymer membranes are facing great challenges in broader applications, for their inherent limitations especially poor hydrophilicity, anti-fouling and anti-compaction properties. In order to improve and enhance the integrated properties of the membrane, YxFeyZr1-x-yO2 coated TiO2 solid superacid (SYFZr-Tis) functional nanomaterial was synthesized via hydrolysis, calcination and sulfation, and phosphorylated ZrxSi1-xO2/Al2O3 (PZSA) was prepared through co-hydrolysis, silanization and phosphorylation, followed by coating of Al2O3. The functional nanomaterials show positive effects on membrane performances. The SYFZr-Tis nanoparticles can form micro reaction locations (MRLs) in the membrane when doping into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to prepare SYFZr-Tis/PVDF hybrid membranes, which show a tensile strength of 3.57 MPa, water contact angle of 29.1° and porosity of 73.58%. Moreover, the hybrid membrane shows a favorable oil retention ratio of 90.63% and a stable permeate flux of 345 L m−2 h−1 under operating pressure of 0.15 MPa (59.93% and 183 L m−2 h−1 for PVDF pristine membrane). In addition, the PZSA functional nanomaterials were employed as a functional layer to form PZSA self-assembled membrane on porous supports. Research shows that the self-assembled membrane performs oil and COD retention ratios of 86.84% and 85.23% respectively and a water yield of 526.32 L m−2 h−1 when treating oily wastewater (under operating pressure of 0.15 MPa). Furthermore, compared with the hybrid membrane, the PZSA self-assembled membrane performs recyclable character, which lowers membrane costs. Therefore, functional nanomaterials effectively enhance the development of membrane technology, and they are expected to achieve potential applications in wastewater treatment.
