Abstract:Abstract Background Augmented Reality (AR) is a rapidly emerging technology finding growing acceptance and application in different fields of surgery. Various studies have been performed evaluating the precision and accuracy of AR guided navigation. This study investigates the feasibility of a commercially available AR head mounted device during orthopedic surgery. Methods Thirteen orthopedic surgeons from a Swiss university clinic performed 25 orthopedic surgical procedures wearing a holographic AR headset (HoloLens, Microsoft, Redmond, WA, USA) providing complementary three-dimensional, patient specific anatomic information. The surgeon’s experience of using the device during surgery was recorded using a standardized 58-item questionnaire grading different aspects on a 100-point scale with anchor statements. Results Surgeons were generally satisfied with image quality (85 ± 17 points) and accuracy of the virtual objects (84 ± 19 point). Wearing the AR device was rated as fairly comfortable (79 ± 13 points). Functionality of voice commands (68 ± 20 points) and gestures (66 ± 20 points) provided less favorable results. The greatest potential in the use of the AR device was found for surgical correction of deformities (87 ± 15 points). Overall, surgeons were satisfied with the application of this novel technology (78 ± 20 points) and future access to it was demanded (75 ± 22 points). Conclusion AR is a rapidly evolving technology with large potential in different surgical settings, offering the opportunity to provide a compact, low cost alternative requiring a minimum of infrastructure compared to conventional navigation systems. While surgeons where generally satisfied with image quality of the here tested head mounted AR device, some technical and ergonomic shortcomings were pointed out. This study serves as a proof of concept for the use of an AR head mounted device in a real-world sterile setting in orthopedic surgery.

Abstract:Amoeboid movement is believed to involve a pressure gradient along the cell length, with contractions in the posterior region driving cytoplasmic streaming forward. However, a parallel mechanism has yet to be demonstrated in migrating adhesive cells. To probe the distribution of intracellular forces, we microinjected high molecular weight linear polyacrylamide (PAA) as a passive force sensor into migrating NIH3T3 fibroblasts. Injected PAA appeared as amorphous aggregates that underwent shape change and directional movement in response to differential forces exerted by the surrounding environment. PAA injected into the posterior region moved toward the front, whereas PAA in the anterior region never moved to the posterior region. This preferential forward movement was observed only in migrating cells with a defined polarity. Disruption of myosin II activity by blebbistatin inhibited the forward translocation of PAA while cell migration persisted in a disorganized fashion. These results suggest a myosin II-dependent force gradient in migrating cells, possibly as a result of differential cortical contractions between the anterior and posterior regions. This gradient may be responsible for the forward transport of cellular components and for maintaining the directionality during cell migration.

Abstract:Background and Objectives In the field of surgical oncology, there has been a desire for innovative techniques to improve tumor visualization, resection, and patient outcomes. Augmented reality (AR) technology superimposes digital content onto the real‐world environment, enhancing the user's experience by blending digital and physical elements. A thorough examination of AR technology in surgical oncology has yet to be performed. Methods A scoping review of intraoperative AR in surgical oncology was conducted according to the guidelines and recommendations of The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta‐analyzes Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA‐ScR) framework. All original articles examining the use of intraoperative AR during surgical management of cancer were included. Exclusion criteria included virtual reality applications only, preoperative use only, fluorescence, AR not specific to surgical oncology, and study design (reviews, commentaries, abstracts). Results A total of 2735 articles were identified of which 83 were included. Most studies (52) were performed on animals or phantom models, while the remaining included patients. A total of 1112 intraoperative AR surgical cases were performed across the studies. The most common anatomic site was brain (20 articles), followed by liver (16), renal (9), and head and neck (8). AR was most often used for intraoperative navigation or anatomic visualization of tumors or critical structures but was also used to identify osteotomy or craniotomy planes. Conclusions AR technology has been applied across the field of surgical oncology to aid in localization and resection of tumors.

Abstract:The gaseous and filterable air concentrations of a variety of phenols were determined for seven rain events in Portland, OR. The dissolved and filterable rain concentrations were also determined concurrently. The phenols in the air were found to exist virtually exclusively in the gaseous state as expected on the basis of their large vapor pressures. The fact that virtually all of the phenols found in the rain were present in the dissolved state is in agreement with the air data. The rain (dissolved) concentrations were quite high, in the microgram per liter range. Of all the constituents present in the rain samples, the most concentrated ones were phenols. The results indicate that gas scavenging is much more important than particle scavenging for phenols. Considering the rather low values of their Henry's law constants, gas scavenging is an efficient atmospheric removal process for these compounds.

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this article is to review the current uses of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in oral and maxillofacial surgery. We discuss the use of VR/AR in educational training, surgical planning, advances in hardware and software, and the implementation of VR/AR in this field. Study design: A retrospective comprehensive review search of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library was conducted. The search resulted in finding 313 English articles in the last 10 years. Results: A total of 38 articles were selected after a meticulous review of the aims, objectives, and methodology by 2 independent reviewers. Conclusions: Virtual reality/AR technology offers significant potential in various aspects, including student education, resident evaluation, surgical planning, and overall surgical implementation. However, its widespread adoption in practice is hindered by factors such as the need for further research, cost concerns, unfamiliarity among current educators, and the necessity for technological improvement. Furthermore, residency programs hold a unique position to influence the future of oral and maxillofacial surgery. As VR/AR has demonstrated substantial benefits in resident education and other applications, residency programs have much to gain by integrating these emerging technologies into their curricula.
Serum Haptoglobin: A Nonspecific Tumor Marker for Renal Cell Carcinoma

Abstract:Serum haptoglobin levels were measured in 116 patients with renal cell carcinoma. The overall accuracy of correlation between haptoglobin levels and the presence or absence of known disease was 68% (normal in 87% of patients without clinically apparent disease, and elevated in 58% of patients with disease). The levels appear to correlate with the extent of tumor burden: stable when clinical disease is stable, rising as disease progresses, and falling after effective therapy. Serum haptoglobin is rarely falsely elevated, which suggests an excellent potential for disease surveillance. This nonspecific tumor marker appears to merit further evaluation in patients with renal cell carcinoma.

Abstract:Objectives Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are innovative technologies that have a wide range of potential applications in the health care industry. The aim of this study was to investigate the body of research on AR and VR applications in rhinology by performing a scoping review. Data Sources PubMed, Scopus, and Embase. Review Methods According to PRISM‐ScR guidelines, a scoping review of literature on the application of AR and/or VR in the context of Rhinology was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Embase. Results Forty‐nine articles from 1996 to 2023 met the criteria for review. Five broad types of AR and/or VR applications were found: preoperative, intraoperative, training/education, feasibility, and technical. The subsequent clinical domains were recognized: craniovertebral surgery, nasal endoscopy, transsphenoidal surgery, skull base surgery, endoscopic sinus surgery, and sinonasal malignancies. Conclusion AR and VR have comprehensive applications in Rhinology. AR for surgical navigation may have the most emerging potential in skull base surgery and endoscopic sinus surgery. VR can be utilized as an engaging training tool for surgeons and residents and as a distraction analgesia for patients undergoing office‐based procedures. Virtual and Augmented Reality Simulators Show Intraoperative, Surgical Training, and Athletic Training Applications: A Scoping Review

Abstract:Purpose: To review published literature to identify and evaluate the effect of virtual reality (complete immersion) and augmented reality (overlay of digital information onto the physical world) simulators on intraoperative use for orthopaedic surgeons, orthopaedic surgical education, and athletic training. Methods: A systematic review was performed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines to identify studies, published since 2014, that evaluated the role of augmented/virtual reality on intraoperative use for orthopaedic surgeons, orthopaedic surgical education, and athletic training. Results: Virtual reality (VR) simulators provide 3-dimensional graphical simulation of the physical world, and augmented reality (AR) simulators overlay digital information onto the physical world. Simulators can include interactive features (i.e., replication of intraoperative bleeding), haptic feedback, and unrestricted task repetition, and they can record, compare, and analyze performance while being easily accessible and eliminating the need for the presence of a mentor or coach. Four studies reported on VR for intraoperative use, 47 studies on surgical education, and 10 studies on athletic training. Two studies revealed the advantages of using VR simulation during intraoperative procedures, specifically showcasing its benefits for elbow arthroscopy, while 2 studies demonstrated similar positive outcomes for hip arthroscopy. Seventeen studies demonstrated that a VR simulator could be a beneficial tool to assist in surgical education for the knee, while 12 studies found that VR simulation is a valuable tool for aiding in surgical education of shoulder arthroscopy. Ten studies demonstrated that VR simulation improves skills in the operating room. Three studies revealed that individuals with more experience exhibit superior performance on these simulators compared to those with less experience. In the realm of athletic training, 10 studies showcased the potential of VR simulation to play a significant role in athletic performance and injury rehabilitation. Conclusions: VR simulation shows benefits in the operating room, is a valuable tool for surgical education resulting in improved skills, and can be used to enhance athletic performance and injury rehabilitation. Clinical relevance: Understanding that VR simulators can improve surgical outcomes, surgical skill training, and athletic training and rehabilitation could facilitate development and adoption of this advanced technology.

Abstract:Virtual reality (VR) integration into surgical education has gained immense traction by invigorating skill-building in ways that are unlike the traditional modes of training. This systematic review unites current literature relevant to VR in surgical education to showcase tool transferability, and subsequent impact on knowledge acquisition, skill development, and technological innovation. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines and included three databases. Among the 1926 studies that were screened, 31 studies met the inclusion criteria. ChatGPT assisted in generating variables for data extraction, and the authors reached unanimous consensus on 13 variables that provided a framework for assessing VR attributes. Surgical simulation was examined in 26 studies (83.9%). VR applications incorporated anatomy visualization (83.9%), procedure planning (67.7%), skills assessment (64.5%), continuous learning (41.9%), haptic feedback (41.9%), research and innovation (41.9%), case-based learning (22.6%), improved skill retention (19.4%), reduction of stress and anxiety (16.1%), and remote learning (12.9%). No instances of VR integration addressed patient communication or team-based training. Novice surgeons benefited the most from VR simulator experience, improving their confidence and accuracy in tackling complex procedural tasks, as well as decision-making efficiency. Enhanced dexterity compared to traditional modes of surgical training was also notable. VR confers significant potential as an adjunctive teaching method in plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS). Studies demonstrate the utility of virtual simulation in knowledge acquisition and skill development, though they lack targeted approaches for augmenting training related to collaboration and patient communication. Given the underrepresentation of PRS among surgical disciplines regarding VR implementation in surgical education, longitudinal curriculum integration and PRS-specific technologies should be further investigated.

Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) is a promising technology to enhance image guided surgery and represents the perfect bridge to combine precise virtual planning with computer-aided execution of surgical maneuvers in the operating room. In craniofacial surgical oncology, AR brings to the surgeon's sight a digital, three-dimensional representation of the anatomy and helps to identify tumor boundaries and optimal surgical paths. Intraoperatively, real-time AR guidance provides surgeons with accurate spatial information, ensuring accurate tumor resection and preservation of critical structures. In this paper, the authors review current evidence of AR applications in craniofacial surgery, focusing on real surgical applications, and compare existing literature with their experience during an AR and navigation guided craniofacial resection, to subsequently analyze which technological trajectories will represent the future of AR and define new perspectives of application for this revolutionizing technology.

Abstract:Recently, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have received increasing attention, with the development of VR/AR devices such as head-mounted displays, haptic devices, and AR glasses. Medicine is considered to be one of the most effective applications of VR/AR. In this article, we describe a systematic literature review conducted to investigate the state-of-the-art VR/AR technology relevant to plastic surgery. The 35 studies that were ultimately selected were categorized into 3 representative topics: VR/AR-based preoperative planning, navigation, and training. In addition, future trends of VR/AR technology associated with plastic surgery and related fields are discussed.

Abstract:A temperature-sensitive mutation in the murH gene of Escherichia coli confers a lysis phenotype at the restrictive temperature. An extragenic suppressor of murH apparently representing a new locus at 12.5 min on the linkage map and designated smhB is described. The smhB mutation by itself also conferred a temperature-sensitive lysis phenotype. A mutation in another new locus designated lytD which arose spontaneously in the smhB mutant was mapped close to smhB at 12.7 min on the linkage map. The lytD mutation by itself conferred a temperature-sensitive lysis phenotype indistinguishable from that of the murH mutant. Thus, the suppression of lysis in the smhB murH and the smhB lytD double mutants suggests a mechanism involving the reciprocal suppression of the two individual lysis-causing mutant alleles. The suppressor activity of smhB was apparently relatively specific in that smhB failed to prevent lysis induced by either mutational (murE or murF) or antibiotic-induced blocks in peptidoglycan synthesis. This suggests that murH, smhB, and lytD may be functionally related.

Abstract:Mixed reality refers to the integration of virtual reality into the real-world environment. This digital content can be interacted with in real time. The emergence of mixed reality technology has been made possible by the introduction of head-mounted displays, which are being utilized across multiple surgical specialties. In upper extremity surgery, mixed reality has widespread applications in trauma, corrective surgery, arthroplasty, arthroscopy, and oncology. Preoperatively, mixed reality allows for complex 3D planning. Intraoperatively, surgeons can access this 3D data in a sterile environment. While in its infant stages, mixed reality is likely to become a powerful tool for intraoperative guidance and navigation. Mixed reality can change the paradigm of communication, as it allows the sharing of visual data from the surgeon's perspective, enabling remote assistance and participation.

Abstract:Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is a cornerstone of dermatological practice. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology, initially used for entertainment, have entered healthcare, offering real-time data overlaying a surgeon's view. This paper explores potential applications of VR and AR in MMS, emphasizing their advantages and limitations. We aim to identify research gaps to facilitate innovation in dermatological surgery. We conducted a PubMed search using the following: "augmented reality" OR "virtual reality" AND "Mohs" or "augmented reality" OR "virtual reality" AND "surgery." Inclusion criteria were peer-reviewed articles in English discussing these technologies in medical settings. We excluded non-peer-reviewed sources, non-English articles, and those not addressing these technologies in a medical context. VR alleviates patient anxiety and enhances patient satisfaction while serving as an educational tool. It also aids physicians by providing realistic surgical simulations. On the other hand, AR assists in real-time lesion analysis, optimizing incision planning, and refining margin control during surgery. Both of these technologies offer remote guidance for trainee residents, enabling real-time learning and oversight and facilitating synchronous teleconsultations. These technologies may transform dermatologic surgery, making it more accessible and efficient. However, further research is needed to validate their effectiveness, address potential challenges, and optimize seamless integration. All in all, AR and VR enhance real-world environments with digital data, offering real-time surgical guidance and medical insights. By exploring the potential integration of these technologies in MMS, our study identifies avenues for further research to thoroughly understand the role of these technologies to redefine dermatologic surgery, elevating precision, surgical outcomes, and patient experiences.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose of Review Augmented reality (AR) is becoming increasingly popular in modern-day medicine. Computer-driven tools are progressively integrated into clinical and surgical procedures. The purpose of this review was to provide a comprehensive overview of the current technology and its challenges based on recent literature mainly focusing on clinical, cadaver, and innovative sawbone studies in the field of orthopedic surgery. The most relevant literature was selected according to clinical and innovational relevance and is summarized. Recent Findings Augmented reality applications in orthopedic surgery are increasingly reported. In this review, we summarize basic principles of AR including data preparation, visualization, and registration/tracking and present recently published clinical applications in the area of spine, osteotomies, arthroplasty, trauma, and orthopedic oncology. Higher accuracy in surgical execution, reduction of radiation exposure, and decreased surgery time are major findings presented in the literature. Summary In light of the tremendous progress of technological developments in modern-day medicine and emerging numbers of research groups working on the implementation of AR in routine clinical procedures, we expect the AR technology soon to be implemented as standard devices in orthopedic surgery.

Abstract:VR and AR technology have gradually developed to the extent that they could help operators in the surgical field. In this study, we present a case of VR simulation for preoperative planning and AR navigation applied to orthognathic surgery. The average difference between the preplanned data and the post-operative results was 3.00 mm, on average, and the standard deviation was 1.44 mm. VR simulation could provide great advantages for 3D medical simulations, with accurate manipulation and immersiveness. AR navigation has great potential in medical application; its advantages include displaying real time augmented 3D models of patients. Moreover, it is easily applied in the surgical field, without complicated 3D simulations or 3D-printed surgical guides.
