Abstract:Calcium (Ca) is essential for plant growth and stress adaptation, yet its availability is often limited in acidic soils, posing a major threat to crop production. Understanding the intricate mechanisms orchestrating plant adaptation to Ca deficiency remains elusive. Here, we show that the Ca deficiency-enhanced nuclear accumulation of the transcription factor SENSITIVE TO PROTON RHIZOTOXICITY 1 (STOP1) in Arabidopsis thaliana confers tolerance to Ca deprivation, with the global transcriptional responses triggered by Ca deprivation largely impaired in the stop1 mutant. Notably, STOP1 activates the Ca deprivation-induced expression of CATION/Ca2+ EXCHANGER 1 (CCX1) by directly binding to its promoter region, which facilitates Ca2+ efflux from endoplasmic reticulum to cytosol to maintain Ca homeostasis. Consequently, the constitutive expression of CCX1 in the stop1 mutant partially rescues the Ca deficiency phenotype by increasing Ca content in the shoots. These findings uncover the pivotal role of the STOP1-CCX1 axis in plant adaptation to low Ca, offering alternative manipulating strategies to improve plant Ca nutrition in acidic soils and extending our understanding of the multifaceted role of STOP1.
Overexpression of AtHsp90.2, AtHsp90.5 and AtHsp90.7 in Arabidopsis Thaliana Enhances Plant Sensitivity to Salt and Drought Stresses

Abstract:Three AtHsp90 isoforms, cytosolic AtHsp90.2, chloroplast-located AtHsp90.5, and endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-located AtHsp90.7, were characterized by constitutive overexpressing their genes in Arabidopsis thaliana . Both types of the transgenic plants overexpressing cytosolic and organellar AtHsp90s showed reduced tolerance to salt and drought stresses with lower germination rates and fresh weights, but improved tolerance to high concentration of Ca 2+ comparing with the wild type plants. Transcriptional analysis of ABA-responsive genes, RD29A , RD22 and KIN2 under salt and drought stresses, indicated that the induction expression of these genes was delayed by constitutive overexpression of cytosolic AtHsp90.2, but was hardly affected by that of organellar AtHsp90.5 and AtHsp90.7. These results implied that Arabidopsis different cellular compartments-located Hsp90s in Arabidopsis might be involved in abiotic stresses by different functional mechanisms, probably through ABA-dependent or Ca 2+ pathways, and proper homeostasis of Hsp90 was critical for cellular stress response and/or tolerance in plants.
Cation/Ca2+ Exchanger 1 (MdCCX1), a Plasma Membrane-Localized Na+ Transporter, Enhances Plant Salt Tolerance by Inhibiting Excessive Accumulation of Na+ and Reactive Oxygen Species

Abstract:High salinity causes severe damage to plant growth and significantly reduces crop yields. The CCX family proteins can facilitate the transport of multiple ions to prevent toxicity. CCX proteins play an important role in regulating plant salt tolerance, but no detailed studies on CCX proteins in apples have been reported. Here, the CCX family gene MdCCX1 was cloned from apple ( Malus domestica ). It is constitutively expressed in various apple tissues and is significantly induced by salt stress. As a plasma membrane-localized protein, MdCCX1 -overexpression could complement the Na + -sensitive phenotype of yeast mutants and reduce the Na + content in yeast cells under NaCl treatment, suggesting that MdCCX1 could be a plasma membrane-localized Na + transporter. To identify the function of MdCCX1 in salt response, we transformed this gene into Arabidopsis , apple calli, and apple plants. Overexpression of MdCCX1 significantly improved the salt tolerance of these transgenic materials. The significantly reduced Na + content under NaCl treatment indicated that MdCCX1 overexpression could enhance plant salt tolerance by inhibiting the excessive accumulation of Na + . Besides, MdCCX1 overexpression could also enhance plant salt tolerance by promoting ROS scavenging. These findings provide new insight and rich resources for future studies of CCX proteins in plant species.

Abstract:Genetic mutants defective in stimulus-induced Ca2+ increases have been gradually isolated, allowing the identification of cell-surface sensors/receptors, such as the osmosensor OSCA1. However, determining the Ca2+-signaling specificity to various stimuli in these mutants remains a challenge. For instance, less is known about the exact selectivity between osmotic and ionic stresses in the osca1 mutant. Here, we have developed a method to distinguish the osmotic and ionic effects by analyzing Ca2+ increases, and demonstrated that osca1 is impaired primarily in Ca2+ increases induced by the osmotic but not ionic stress. We recorded Ca2+ increases induced by sorbitol (osmotic effect, OE) and NaCl/CaCl2 (OE + ionic effect, IE) in Arabidopsis wild-type and osca1 seedlings. We assumed the NaCl/CaCl2 total effect (TE) = OE + IE, then developed procedures for Ca2+ imaging, image analysis and mathematic fitting/modeling, and found osca1 defects mainly in OE. The osmotic specificity of osca1 suggests that osmotic and ionic perceptions are independent. The precise estimation of these two stress effects is applicable not only to new Ca2+-signaling mutants with distinct stimulus specificity but also the complex Ca2+ signaling crosstalk among multiple concurrent stresses that occur naturally, and will enable us to specifically fine tune multiple signal pathways to improve crop yields.
The apple Ca2+/H+ exchanger MdCAX2L-2 functions positively in modulation of Ba2+ tolerance

Abstract:Calcium is an essential element for plant growth and development, and it plays an important role in the responses of plants to abiotic stress. High concentrations of heavy metal ions in soil significantly affect the yield and quality of crops and pose human health threats when these ions accumulate in edible organs. The Ca2+/H+ exchanger (CAX) family is a class of transporters that mediate the transmembrane transport of both Ca2+ and metal ions, and they are widely involved in regulating plant growth and development and stress responses. Here, we cloned an AtCAX2 ortholog, MdCAX2L-2, from apple. It is constitutively expressed in various apple tissues and significantly induced by Ca2+ and Ba2+ treatments. The MdCAX2L-2 protein is located in the vacuolar membrane in both plant and yeast cells. Overexpression of MdCAX2L-2 enhanced the tolerance of the yeast mutant K667 to high concentrations of Ca2+ and Ba2+. In addition, the role of MdCAX2L-2 in modulating Ba2+ tolerance was identified using MdCAX2L-2-overexpressing transgenic Arabidopsis plants and apple calli. Comparison of growth phenotypes and stress-related physiological indexes under BaCl2 treatment indicated that MdCAX2L-2 could enhance the Ba2+ tolerance of plants by promoting Ba2+ compartmentalization into the vacuoles and eliminating excess ROS. Our results provide insights that will aid future studies examining the function of CAX proteins in regulating stress tolerance in fruit crops, as well as their underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:Abstract A plant’s oxygen supply can vary from normal (normoxia) to total depletion (anoxia). Tolerance to anoxia is relevant to wetland species, rice (Oryza sativa) cultivation, and submergence tolerance of crops. Decoding and transmitting calcium (Ca) signals may be an important component to anoxia tolerance; however, the contribution of intracellular Ca transporters to this process is poorly understood. Four functional cation/proton exchangers (CAX1–4) in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) help regulate Ca homeostasis around the vacuole. Our results demonstrate that cax1 mutants are more tolerant to both anoxic conditions and submergence. Using phenotypic measurements, RNA-sequencing, and proteomic approaches, we identified cax1-mediated anoxia changes that phenocopy changes present in anoxia-tolerant crops: altered metabolic processes, diminished reactive oxygen species production post anoxia, and altered hormone signaling. Comparing wild-type and cax1 expressing genetically encoded Ca indicators demonstrated altered cytosolic Ca signals in cax1 during reoxygenation. Anoxia-induced Ca signals around the plant vacuole are involved in the control of numerous signaling events related to adaptation to low oxygen stress. This work suggests that cax1 anoxia response pathway could be engineered to circumvent the adverse effects of flooding that impair production agriculture.

Abstract:Seed shattering is an important trait that distinguishes crop cultivars from the wild and weedy species. The genetics of seed shattering was investigated in this study to provide insights into rice domestication and the evolution of weedy rice. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis, conducted in 2 recombinant inbred populations involving 2 rice cultivars and a weedy rice accession of the southern United States, revealed 3-5 QTLs that controlled seed shattering with 38-45% of the total phenotypic variation. Two QTLs on chromosomes 4 and 10 were consistent in both populations. Both cultivar and weedy rice contributed alleles for increased seed shattering. Genetic backgrounds affected both QTL number and the magnitude of QTL effects. The major QTL qSH4 and a minor QTL qSH3 were validated in near-isogenic lines, with the former conferring a significantly higher degree of seed shattering than the latter. Although the major QTL qSH4 overlapped with the sh4, the presence of the nonshattering single nucleotide polymorphism allele in the weedy rice accession suggested involvement of a linked locus or an alternative molecular genetic mechanism. Overlapping of several QTLs with those from earlier studies indicated that weedy rice may have been derived from the wild species Oryza rufipogon. Natural hybridization of rice cultivars with the highly variable O. rufipogon present in different geographic regions might be responsible for the evolution of a wide range of phenotypic and genotypic variabilities seen in weedy rice populations worldwide.

Abstract:Headache alone rarely indicates a sinister underlying cause. However, if the red flags are flying -- that is, if the patient is over 30 years old when the first headache develops, has additional symptoms or signs or has a very acute onset, particularly involving vomiting, then suspicion should be raised (see table 4). Although migraine has a high impact on the sufferer and affects a large proportion of the population on a monthly basis, the problem of acute muscle contraction headache is far greater. Other forms of headache are actually uncommon in comparison to these two. However, chronic daily headache is the most common condition seen by the medical professional because of its impact on the patient's quality of life. The key to the management of this condition is the assessment of analgesic dependence including NSAIDs, and particularly the codeine-containing agents. These should be avoided while long-term aproached such as exercise and certain prophylactic agents are introduced. It is true to say that if a careful initial assessment is made leading to a correct diagnosis, then the chance of appropriate management is enormously increased. Patients undergoing the correct management should generally see a massive improvement in their quality of life. Headache can, therefore, be a very satisfying condition for the clinician to treat.
An intracellular calcium sensory complex CPKs/ECA1 controls cytosolic calcium homeostasis for plant osmosensitivity

Abstract:Intracellular Ca2+ controls various cellular functions and local Ca2+ dynamics is tightly regulated upon environmental cues. Maintaining cellular Ca2+ balance is essential for plant survival. Here we report a calcium-dependent protein kinases (CPKs)-mediated signaling pathway, in conjunction with the ER membrane-resident Ca2+-ATPase ECA1, acts influentially for cytosolic Ca2+ homeostasis and osmotic stress tolerance. We show that targeting cytosolic Ca2+ efflux via specific inhibitors or eca1 mutation results in augmented [Ca2+]cyt spikes, elevated cytoplasmic ABA ([ABA]cyt) level and ultimately hypersensitive to osmotic stress. Screening of Arabidopsis CPKs revealed direct binding of CPK2/6/11 to ECA1. Moreover, CPK2/6/11 phosphorylate the N-terminal of ECA1 at Ser5, thereby enhancing its activity for cytosolic Ca2+ efflux into ER and subsequently lower [ABA]cyt. The cumulative effect of ECA1 and CPKs mutation on Arabidopsis plant sensitivity to osmotic stress further illustrates that CPKs/ECA1 acts an intracellular sensory module for plant stress tolerance via regulating [Ca2+]cyt and [ABA]cyt homeostasis.

The vacuolar Ca2+ transporter CATION EXCHANGER 2 regulates cytosolic calcium homeostasis, hypoxic signaling, and response to flooding in Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract:Flooding represents a major threat to global agricultural productivity and food security, but plants are capable of deploying a suite of adaptive responses that can lead to short- or longer-term survival to this stress. One cellular pathway thought to help coordinate these responses is via flooding-triggered Ca2+ signaling. We have mined publicly available transcriptomic data from Arabidopsis subjected to flooding or low oxygen stress to identify rapidly upregulated, Ca2+ -related transcripts. We then focused on transporters likely to modulate Ca2+ signals. Candidates emerging from this analysis included AUTOINHIBITED Ca2+ ATPASE 1 and CATION EXCHANGER 2. We therefore assayed mutants in these genes for flooding sensitivity at levels from growth to patterns of gene expression and the kinetics of flooding-related Ca2+ changes. Knockout mutants in CAX2 especially showed enhanced survival to soil waterlogging coupled with suppressed induction of many marker genes for hypoxic response and constitutive activation of others. CAX2 mutants also generated larger and more sustained Ca2+ signals in response to both flooding and hypoxic challenges. CAX2 is a Ca2+ transporter located on the tonoplast, and so these results are consistent with an important role for vacuolar Ca2+ transport in the signaling systems that trigger flooding response.

Abstract:As calcium sensors, plant calcium-dependent protein kinases (CDPKs) play important roles in plants’ responses to various abiotic stresses. Here, we report the functional characterization of CPK28, a member of the CDPK family in Arabidopsis, in response to osmotic stress. The cpk28 mutant, a loss-of-function mutant, exhibited an NaCl- and mannitol-sensitive phenotype in green cotyledons, while CPK28-overexpressing plants displayed stronger tolerance to NaCl and mannitol stresses than wild-type plants. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and beta-glucuronidase staining assays showed that NaCl and mannitol stresses induced CPK28. CPK28-overexpressing lines accumulated significantly more proline relative to wild-type plants and mutant plants under NaCl and mannitol stresses. Transient expression of CPK28-GFP in mesophyll cell protoplasts, as well as stable transgenic lines expressing CPK28-GFP, showed that CPK28 was localized in the plasma membrane. Expression levels of known stress-responsive genes were not significantly altered in the null mutant and overexpression lines, suggesting that CPK28 possibly mediated the stress response via the regulation of target proteins rather than via regulation at the level of transcription. Meanwhile, CPK28 could autophosphorylate. Taken together, these data demonstrated that CPK28, a potential positive regulator, is involved in the response to osmotic stress in Arabidopsis.
Heterogeneous expression of plasma-membrane-localised OsOSCA1.4 complements osmotic sensing based on hyperosmolality and salt stress in Arabidopsis osca1 mutant

Abstract:In plants, both hyperosmolality and salt stress induce cytosolic calcium increases within seconds, referred to as the hyperosmolality-induced [Ca2+]cyt increases, OICIcyt, and salt stress-induced [Ca2+]cyt increases, SICIcyt. Previous studies have shown that Arabidopsis reduced hyperosmolality-induced [Ca2+]i increase 1 (OSCA1.1) encodes a hyperosmolality-gated calcium-permeable channel that mediates OICIcyt in guard cells and root cells. Multiple OSCA members exist in plants; for example, Oryza sativa has 11 OsOSCAs genes, indicating that OSCAs have diverse biological functions. Here, except for OsOSCA4.1, ten full-length OsOSCAs were separately subcloned, in which OsOSCA1.4 was exclusively localised to the plasma membrane and other nine OsOSCAs-eYFP co-localised with an endoplasmic reticulum marker in Arabidopsis mesophyll protoplasts. OsOSCA1.4 was further identified as a calcium-permeable ion channel that activates an inward current after receiving an osmotic signal exerted by hyperosmolality or salt stress, and mediates OICIcyt and SICIcyt in human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) cells. Moreover, overexpression of OsOSCA1.4 in Arabidopsis osca1 mutant complemented osmotic Ca2+ signalling, root growth, and stomatal movement in response to hyperosmolality and salt stress. These results will facilitate further study of OsOSCA-mediated calcium signalling and its distinct roles in rice growth and development.

Abstract:Vacuolar cation/proton exchangers (CAXs), which transport cations such as calcium (Ca2+) from the cytosol, are important in a wide range of biotic and abiotic stress tolerance responses in plants. Plant vacuolar transporters, particularly CAX (Cation/H+ Exchangers) responsible for Ca2+/H+ exchange on the vacuole tonoplast, play a central role in governing cellular pH, ion balance, nutrient storage, metal accumulation, and stress responses. Furthermore, CAX variants have been employed to enhance the calcium content of crops, contributing to biofortification efforts. Recent research has uncovered the broader significance of these transporters in plant signal transduction and element partitioning. The use of genetically encoded Ca2+ sensors has begun to highlight the crucial role of CAX isoforms in generating cytosolic Ca2+ signals, underscoring their function as pivotal hubs in diverse environmental and developmental signalling networks. Interestingly, it has been observed that the loss of CAX function can be advantageous in specific stress conditions, both for biotic and abiotic stressors. Determining the optimal timing and approach for modulating the expression of CAX is a critical concern. In the future, strategically manipulating the temporal loss of CAX function in agriculturally important crops holds promise to bolster plant immunity, enhance cold tolerance, and fortify resilience against one of agriculture's most significant challenges, namely flooding.

Abstract:The CV( (Calcium Exchanger) genes constitute a set of signal transductors that are important for plant growth and adaptation to environmental stresses, especially to low temperature. CbC4X51, a Ca2+/H+ exchanger was cloned form Capsella bursa-pastoris, has been reported as a cold inducible gene. Here we showed that the transcriptional level of CbC4X51 in leaf and stem was higher than that in roots. Transcript of CbCAX51 was continuously up-regulated by Ca2+ and Cu2+, and transiently up-regulated by Zn2+ and Li2+, cold stress. GA and ABA. The CbCAX51 protein was predicted to be localized in vacuolar by PSORT to Plant-mPLos, which was further confirmed by the subcellular detection of CbCAX51-GFP fusion protein. When CbCAX51 was transformed into the cold-sensitive plant tobacco, it conferred cold tolerance in tobacco seedlings based on physiological studies. Likewise, overexpression of CbCAX51 can activated some cold responsive genes in transgenic tobacco. Taken together, CbCAX51 is involved in the cold signal transduction and modulation of downstream components to enhance cold tolerance in tobacco. (C) 2017 Friends Science Publishers

Abstract:We report the first measurements of photo-carrier lifetimes in silicon nanocrystal-based third generation solar cells by Kelvin force microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy under modulated frequency light illumination. A high concentration of active defects at the interface between the nanocrystals and silicon oxide matrix may be passivated by annealing under hydrogen. We found that the carrier lifetime, τ, is τ = 7 × 10−5 s and τ = 3.5 × 10−5 s within 10% accuracy for the hydrogen passivated and non-passivated nanocrystals, respectively. We used an exponential model to confirm the experimental potential measurements and to estimate photo-carrier lifetimes.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Key message</h3>Overexpression of finger millet calmodulin imparts drought and salt tolerance in plants.Drought and salinity are major environmental stresses which affect crop productivity and therefore are major hindrance in feeding growing population world-wide. Calcium (Ca2+) signaling plays a crucial role during the plant's response to these stress stimuli. Calmodulin (CaM), a crucial Ca2+sensor, is involved in transducing the signal downstream in various physiological, developmental and stress responses by modulating a plethora of target proteins. The role of CaM has been well established in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana for regulating various developmental processes, stress signaling and ion transport. In the current study, we investigate the CaM of Eleusine coracana (common name finger millet, known especially for its drought tolerance and superior Ca2+ content). In-silico analysis showed that Eleusine CaM (EcCaM) has greater similarity to rice CaM as compared to Arabidopsis CaM due to the presence of highly conserved four EF-hand domains. To decipher the in-planta function of EcCaM, we have adopted the gain-of-function approach by generating the 35S::EcCaM over-expression transgenic in Arabidopsis. Overexpression of EcCaM in Arabidopsis makes the plant tolerant to polyethylene glycol (PEG) induced drought and salt stress (NaCl) as demonstrated by post-germination based phenotypic assay, ion leakage, MDA and proline estimation, ROS detection under stressed and normal conditions. Moreover, EcCaM overexpression leads to hypersensitivity toward exogenously applied ABA at the seed germination stage. These findings reveal that EcCaM mediates tolerance to drought and salinity stress. Also, our results indicate that EcCaM is involved in modulating ABA signaling. Summarizing our results, we report for the first time that EcCaM is involved in modulating plants response to stress and this information can be used for the generation of future-ready crops that can tolerate a wide range of abiotic stresses.

Abstract:Abstract Background Soybean ( Glycine max (L.)) is one the most important oil-yielding cash crops. However, the soybean production has been seriously restricted by salinization. It is therefore crucial to identify salt tolerance-related genes and reveal molecular mechanisms underlying salt tolerance in soybean crops. A better understanding of how plants resist salt stress provides insights in improving existing soybean varieties as well as cultivating novel salt tolerant varieties. In this study, the biological function of GmNHX1 , a NHX-like gene, and the molecular basis underlying GmNHX1 -mediated salt stress resistance have been revealed. Results We found that the transcription level of GmNHX1 was up-regulated under salt stress condition in soybean, reaching its peak at 24 h after salt treatment. By employing the virus-induced gene silencing technique (VIGS), we also found that soybean plants became more susceptible to salt stress after silencing GmNHX1 than wild-type and more silenced plants wilted than wild-type under salt treatment. Furthermore, Arabidopsis thaliana expressing GmNHX1 grew taller and generated more rosette leaves under salt stress condition compared to wild-type. Exogenous expression of GmNHX1 resulted in an increase of Na + transportation to leaves along with a reduction of Na + absorption in roots, and the consequent maintenance of a high K + /Na + ratio under salt stress condition. GmNHX1 -GFP-transformed onion bulb endothelium cells showed fluorescent pattern in which GFP fluorescence signals enriched in vacuolar membranes. Using the non-invasive micro-test technique (NMT), we found that the Na + efflux rate of both wild-type and transformed plants after salt treatment were significantly higher than that of before salt treatment. Additionally, the Na + efflux rate of transformed plants after salt treatment were significantly higher than that of wild-type. Meanwhile, the transcription levels of three osmotic stress-related genes, SKOR, SOS1 and AKT1 were all up-regulated in GmNHX1 -expressing plants under salt stress condition. Conclusion Vacuolar membrane-localized GmNHX1 enhances plant salt tolerance through maintaining a high K + /Na + ratio along with inducing the expression of SKOR, SOS1 and AKT1 . Our findings provide molecular insights on the roles of GmNHX1 and similar sodium/hydrogen exchangers in regulating salt tolerance.

Abstract:Tea plant (Camellia sinensis) is an important traditional horticultural plant known for the tea products processed from its leaves, which often faces many different adverse conditions, including saline environments. Na+/H + antiporters (NHXs) are extensively involved in the process of plant response to salt stress and resistance acquisition, but studies in tea plant are less common. In this study, a novel NHX gene named CsNHX6 was cloned from tea plant, which encodes 528 amino acids with 12 typical transmembrane domains. Our results showed that CsNHX6 had both Na+ and K + dual transport function, and the transport activity depended on an appropriate H + concentration. In addition, three conserved acidic residues, D164, E188 and D193 in CsNHX6, are essential for Na+ and K + transport. Further, we found that CsNHX6 was significantly induced by salt stress, and its overexpression enhanced the tolerance of yeast and Arabidopsis to salt stress, this was closely related to the improvement of Na+ storage capacity of cells. Furthermore, subcellular localization assay revealed that CsNHX6 was localized in a Golgi-to-vacuole transport system, including Golgi, TGN, PVC and vacuole, and this localized distribution could be enhanced by salt stress. Taken together, these findings suggest that a potential Na+ transport network is dominated by CsNHX6 under salt stress, which directly or indirectly achieves the regionalization of excessive Na+, thus endowing organisms with salt tolerance.

Abstract:Cation gradients in plant cellular compartments are maintained by the synergistic actions of various ion exchangers, pumps, and channels. Cation/Ca 2+ exchanger (CCX) is one of the clades of the Ca 2+ /cation antiporter super family. Here, five SlCCX genes were identified in tomato. Sequence analysis indicated that SlCCXs have the conserved motifs as the CCX domain. Analysis of the expression level of each member of tomato CCX gene family under cation (Mg 2+ , Mn 2+ , Na + , and Ca 2+ ) treatment was determined by qRT-PCR. Tomato CCX demonstrated different degrees of responding to cation treatment. Changes in SlCCX1-LIKE expression was induced by Mg 2+ and Mn 2+ treatment. Analysis of the expression of SlCCX genes in different tissues demonstrated that constitutive high expression of a few genes, including SlCCX1-LIKE and SlCCX5 , indicated their role in tomato organ growth and development. Overexpression of SlCCX1-LIKE dramatically induced leaf senescence. Transcriptome analysis showed that genes related to ROS and several IAA signaling pathways were significantly downregulated, whereas ETH and ABA signaling pathway-related genes were upregulated in overexpression of SlCCX1-LIKE ( OE-SlCCX1-LIKE ) plants, compared with the wild type (WT). Moreover, overexpression of SlCCX1-LIKE plants accumulated more ROS content but less Mg 2+ content. Collectively, the findings of this study provide insights into the base mechanism through which CCXs regulate leaf senescence in tomato.
