Abstract:A dual-polarized and reconfigurable metasurface incorporated voltage-controlled varactor diode for manipulation of electromagnetic waves is proposed. Two varactor diodes are embedded along x- and y-directions, respectively, thus the dispersion response has distinct behavior for different polarizations. Exploiting the anisotropic characteristic, the x- and y-polarized waves can be independently diffused in three dimensions, and the required phase profiles are optimized by the genetic algorithm. Additionally, the functionalities like beam splitting and beam deflection are also presented. All functions can be switched in real time by adjusting the voltage applied on the metasurface from 8.3 GHz to 8.9 GHz. The proposed metasurface has great potential in intelligent stealth missions and wireless communication systems.
Polarization-Insensitive Metasurface with High-Gain Large-Angle Beam Deflection

Abstract:Metasurfaces have shown great potential in achieving low-cost and low-complexity signal enhancement and redirection. Due to the low transmission power and high attenuation issues of current high-frequency communication technology, it is necessary to explore signal redirection technology based on metasurfaces. This paper presents an innovative metasurface for indoor signal enhancement and redirection, featuring thin thickness, high gain, and wide-angle deflection. The metasurface integrates the design principles of a Fabry–Perot cavity (FPC) theory with a Phase Gradient Partially Reflective Metasurface (PGPRM). Its unit is a fishnet structure with a substrate only 1/33 λ thin. Based on the precise phase control of the dual-layer PGPRM (with an inter-layer distance of 8 mm), the proposed metasurface can obtain phase coverage as small as 78° while achieving high-gain beam deflection as large as 47°. Simulation results show that within the band 8.6–9.2 GHz (6.7%), a single-layer metasurface can deflect the beam to 29° with a maximum gain of 16.9 dBi. In addition, it is also 360° polarization-insensitive in the xoy plane at 9 GHz with large-angle deflection characteristic retained. Moreover, cascading PGPRM can effectively improve the beam deflection angle. After analysis, the scheme with a double-layer spacing of 8 mm was ultimately selected. Simulation results show a double-layer metasurface can deflect the beam to 47° with a maximum gain of 16.4 dBi. This design provides an efficient and cost-effective solution for large-angle beam deflection with gain enhancement for indoor wireless communication.

Abstract:A multifunctional reconfigurable metasurface based on liquid metal injection is presented. The reflective flexible material metasurface formed by two switchable microfluidic layers— the top layer comprising an array of meandered half-rings and the lower layer, straight meander lines—can be reconfigured into four states. The proposed metasurface becomes a reflector with emptied channels, whereas it exhibits linear-to-circular polarization conversion (or linear-to-cross-polarization conversion) properties when the top (or bottom) layer is filled with a liquid metal alloy. Upon normal excitation of linearly u/v-polarized waves and activation of the bottom layer, the metasurface reflects cross v/u-polarized waves in the frequencies from 9.83 to 17.42 GHz (53% bandwidth) with a polarization conversion ratio (PCR) of at least 90%. On the other hand, the metasurface operates as a linear-to-circular polarizer (for u/v-polarized waves) over 8.97–11.30 GHz (23% bandwidth), reflecting left- or right-hand circularly polarized waves. To verify the polarization conversion performance, a $25\times 25$ element metasurface array is fabricated and measured. The experimental results confirm the simulation results over the 8–12 GHz test band. The compactness, structural flexibility, and multifunctionality of the proposed metasurface make it a suitable candidate for modern integrated antenna array systems.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have shown powerful abilities in controlling the reflections, transmissions, and polarizations of lights or electromagnetic (EM) waves, independently. Here, we propose a single active metasurface to achieve reconfigurable EM-wave transmissions and reflections, and simultaneously cross-linearized polarization conversions. The active metasurface contains two metallic layers and a middle dielectric layer. The top metallic layer is composed of periodic metallic short wires, which are designed to convert the polarization. PIN diodes are embedded on the bottom metallic layer to switch the polarization and transmission-reflection conversions. When the PIN diode is turned off, the linearly polarized incident waves are transmitted through the metasurface with almost perfect polarization rotation to its orthogonal direction; when the PIN diode is turned on, however, the metasurface will reflect the incident waves with the same linear polarization. Both numerical simulations and experimental results show good reconfigurable performance of the proposed active metasurface.

Abstract:In this paper, a reconfigurable absorptive-polarization-converting metasurface with 1-bit phase response is proposed for dynamic wavefront control. An absorber is cascaded on a reconfigurable polarization-converting metasurface for out-of-band electromagnetic absorption at lower frequency. Simulated results show that a broad -10 dB copolarization suppression bandwidth from 2.6 GHz to 7.7 GHz can be achieved. Meanwhile, the considerable cross-polarization reflection above -3 dB with 1-bit phase difference from 5.4 GHz to 7.8 GHz is supported by ON/OFF switching of PIN diodes. As exemplary verifications, dual beam generation and diffusive scattering are presented, where the simulated beam-steering angles agree with the theoretical ones. With the attractive features of reconfigurability and wide bandwidth, our design shows great potential in wireless information communication and scattering suppression.

Abstract:In this letter, a reconfigurable multifunctional polarization conversion metasurface is proposed. The polarization state of the reflected wave is controlled by changing the state of PIN diodes which are embedded in unit cells composed of a butterfly structure and biasing network. When the PIN diodes are forward biased in the ON-state, the metasurface can regulate the incident linearly polarized wave into its cross-polarized wave in the two bands of 7.30-8.90 GHz and 19.40-24.92 GHz, and into circularly polarized waves in 9.79-17.42 GHz. When the PIN diode are switched to the OFF-state, cross-polarization conversions are achieved in the band of 8.9-13.22 GHz and line-to-circular polarization conversions are obtained in the bands of 7.60-8.30 GHz and 14.71-16.83 GHz. The simulation results are consistent with the experimental results.

Abstract:In this paper, a reconfigurable active metasurface is proposed to realize linear to circular polarization conversion and reflection by adjusting the states of PIN diodes. The structure is composed of a circular split ring and four sector-shaped circular patches; the PIN diodes loaded with the network feeder are designed to control the functions of polarizer and reflector. When diodes work in ‘ON’ state, the MS works as a linear-to-circular (LTC) polarizer, which can convert the linearly polarized waves into circularly polarized waves in 10.5–13.0 GHz with the relative bandwidth of 21.2%. When diodes work in ‘OFF’ state, the MS works as a reflector, and the co-polarization reflectance is greater than −1dB in 10.5–13.0 GHz, and the corresponding cross-polarization reflectance is less than −12.7dB. Polarization conversion rate (PCR) and absorbance (A) are both below 0.05. The microwave experiments are carried out in order to verify the simulation, and the measured results are in good agreement with the simulated results. We expect that our designed MS has the potential applications in in the fields of polarizers and wireless communication systems.

Abstract:A reconfigurable linear-to-linear polarization conversion metasurface (Re-PCM) based on positive-intrinsic-negative (PIN) diodes is proposed, which can be reconfigured between the conversion mode and the reflection mode by switching the loaded PIN diodes. The unit cell of the Re-PCM consists of two slotted metal square rings and bias lines, which are all etched on a substrate backed by a metal ground. In the conversion mode, the Re-PCM reflects linearly polarized incident waves with 90 polarization rotation. The simulated results show that the polarization conversion ratio is more than 88 over 3.395.01GHz for x-polarized and y -polarized normally incident waves. In the reflection mode, it exhibits total reflection characteristic like a metal plate. The magnitude of co-polarization reflection is over 1dB from 3.83 to 4.74GHz. The physical mechanism and equivalent circuit of the Re-PCM are analyzed. To validate the simulation, a prototype of the Re-PCM is fabricated and measured. Reasonable accordance between the simulated and measured results is obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a real-time reconfigurable metasurface unit-cell working at dual-band with polarization-independent manipulation of reflection and transmission wavefronts. The transmission and reflection phases of the designed digital programmable active element can be dynamically adjusted by the states of the PIN diodes. The unit-cell can be designed to respond to different functions in different frequency bands, which makes it more flexible in radiation characteristics. Both the simulation and experiment show that the element can achieve good reconfigurable performances. This work offers a new method for real-time dynamic control of forward and backward electromagnetic wavefronts in the entire space.
Multiband and multifunctional polarization converter using an asymmetric metasurface

Abstract:A compact and asymmetric multi-band reflective polarization converter metasurface has been offered in this paper. The proposed simple converter can effectively convert an incident linearly polarized EM wave to its orthogonal counterpart and circular polarized waves (RHCP and LHCP) at two frequency bands. The design consists of a square with two curves on the top right and lower left corners and a square Split Ring Resonator (SRR) responsible for linear-to-linear and linear-to-circular polarization conversions, respectively. The simulated results show that the converter successfully transforms a y-polarized incident wave to its orthogonal counterpart in a frequency range of 15.5-16.5 GHz with unity conversion at 16 GHz and circularly-polarized (RHCP) wave at 13 GHz and (LHCP) at 18 GHz, verified through the fabricated and measured sample. Wide angular stability up to 60° oblique incidence along with high efficiency reveals the good applicability of the structure. Moreover, the root cause of the cross-polarization conversion has been analyzed and confirmed through Bi-Mode Foster equivalent circuit and surface current distribution as well. Finally, a fabricated prototype is tested to validate the simulated results through measurement.
High efficiency and ultra-wideband polarization converter based on an L-shaped metasurface

Abstract:An ultra-wideband and efficient single layer polarization converting metasurface based on an L-shaped resonator is presented. The metasurface is based on an F4B dielectric substrate with relative permittivity of 2.65 and a loss tangent of 0.002. The size of the unit cell is 0.132λo × 0.132λo and the thickness of the metasurface is 0.05λo, where λo is the largest wavelength (corresponding to the lower frequency) in the operation band of interest. The proposed structure effectively transforms the linearly or circularly polarized incident wave to its orthogonal equivalent, which is justified by both simulated and measured results where the polarization conversion ratio (PCR) is greater than 90% in the frequency range from 8.6 GHz to 22 GHz with a fractional bandwidth of 88%. The polarization transformation process is illustrated in depth by the surface current distribution. Simulation results reveal that ultra-wideband is achieved because of strong electric and magnetic dipole resonances on the upper and the lower layer of the metasurface. Furthermore, the bandwidth and central frequency can be efficiently adjusted over a wide spectrum by changing the geometric aspects of the unit cell, thereby retaining high transformation proficiency. The designed converter can be used in applications such as antenna design, radar invisibility, imaging, microwave communications, and remote sensing.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a temperature-mechanically reconfigurable bidirectional multifunctional metasurface based on vanadium dioxide, which can operate in both forward and backward working modes and function as a reflective absorber in terahertz frequency range, as well as a reflective and transmissive polarization converter. In the forward mode, by mechanically rotating the top polarization modulation layer at the temperature of over 340 K, the metasurface can switch between reflective linear polarization (LP) converter and absorber. When the metasurface works as a reflective LP converter, the polarization conversion rate exceeds 90 % in 0.75–1.15 THz. Also, the LP wave can be converted to the right-handed circularly polarized (RHCP) wave at 0.56 THz; when the metasurface is utilized as an absorber, the absorptivity is above 90 % in 1.14–1.21 THz and reaches a peak of 95.6 % at 1.18 THz. In the backward mode, the metasurface can act as a transmissive polarization converter and an absorber at the room temperature. When the metasurface as a transmissive polarization converter, the LP wave is converted to the RHCP wave at 1.0 THz; when it works as an absorber, the absorptivity is over 90 % in 1.20–1.61 THz. Through temperature regulation and mechanical reconfiguration, the metasurface can achieve bidirectional multifunction including absorption, linear and circular polarization conversion, which is expected to be applied in antennas, electromagnetic stealth, military radar, terahertz communication, detection and other scenarios.

Abstract:In this work, a reflective polarization conversion metasurface (PCM) with symmetrical L-shaped patches is proposed which enables to switch between different polarization modes by PIN diodes, i.e., linear-to-linear (LTL) cross-polarization and linear-to-circular (LTC) polarization. Because of multimodes activated in the structure, the PCM shows an ultrawide bandwidth both for LTL and LTC polarization conversion. A microstrip line-based DC biasing network composed of radial stubs is introduced to isolate RF currents, which can resolve problems raised by RF lumped choke inductors in the ultrawide bandwidth. A prototype with 15 × 15 units is fabricated. The simulated and measured results show that when the PIN diodes are forward biased, the PCM achieves LTC polarization conversion in the range of 5.96–15.34 GHz (relative bandwidth of 88.4%) with the axial ratio (AR) less than 3 dB; when the PIN diodes are reverse biased, the PCM achieves LTL polarization conversion in the range of 6.05–14.76 GHz (relative bandwidth of 83.75%) with the polarization conversion ratio (PCR) higher than 90%. The proposed PCM is expected to be potentially applied to a broad scanning range array, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS), and remote sensing.

Abstract:Multifunctional integrated meta-devices are the demand of modern communication systems and are given a lot of attention nowadays. Most of the research has focused on either cross-polarization conversion (CPC) or linear-to-circular (LP–CP) conversion. However, simultaneously realizing multiple bands with good conversion efficiency remains crucial. This paper proposes a multiband and multifunctional dual reflective polarization converter surface capable of converting a linearly polarized (LP) wave into a circularly polarized (CP) wave, in frequency bands of 12.29–12.63 GHz, 16.08–24.16 GHz, 27.82–32.21 GHz, 33.75–38.74 GHz, and 39.70–39.79 GHz, with 3 dB axial ratio bandwidths of 2.7%, 40.15%, 14.6%, 13.76%, and 0.2%, respectively. Moreover, the converter is capable of achieving CPC with a polarization conversion ratio (PCR) that exceeds 95%, within the frequency ranges of 13.10–14.72 GHz, 25.43–26.00, 32.46–32.56 GHz, and 39.14–39.59 GHz. In addition, to identify the fundamental cause of the CPC and LP–CP conversion, a comprehensive theoretical investigation is provided. Furthermore, the surface current distribution patterns at different frequencies are investigated to analyze the conversion phenomena. A sample prototype consisting of 20 × 20 unit cells was fabricated and measured, verifying our design and the simulated results. The proposed structure has potential applications in satellite communications, radar, stealth technologies, and reflector antennas.

Abstract:In this article, a single-layer metasurface based reflector design is proposed for linear-to-linear cross-polarization conversion in microwave frequency range. The unit-cell of the proposed design consists of triple-arrow resonant design printed on a grounded FR4 substrate. Excellent cross-conversion is achieved over a broad frequency range (8.0–18.50 GHz) with polarization conversion efficiency higher than 90%. The proposed design has a large fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 80% due to three resonances occurring in the band. The polarization response is angularly stable with respect to oblique incidences with incidence angles up to 45°. The proposed design has been fabricated and experimentally validated. The measurement results are in good agreement with the simulation results.

Abstract:A single-layer wideband and wide-angle reflective metasurface exhibiting linear to cross-polarization conversion (CPC) and linear-to-circular polarization (LP-to-CP) conversion in the X, Ku, and K bands is presented in this research. The devised metasurface serves as a multifunctional platform, achieving CPC over a substantial fractional bandwidth of 64.34% (9.75-19 GHz) with remarkable efficiency exceeding 90% within the 9.75-16 GHz range, reaching a remarkable 100% at resonant frequencies of 11 GHz and 14.6 GHz. Additionally, linear-to-circular polarization conversion is achieved over a significant bandwidth of 9.54 GHz. Notably, the carefully optimized unit cell structure ensures robust polarization transformation, maintaining stability against variations in the incidence angle of up to 45° for both transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) polarizations. The proposed metasurface, characterized by its simplicity, compactness, angular stability, and multifunctionality, demonstrates the considerable potential for various microwave communications, antenna design, radar invisibility, and remote sensing device applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a simple metasurface based multiband reflective polarization converter for both linear and circular polarizations. We show that, on one hand, the proposed structure can convert the polarization of linearly polarized waves to the orthogonal direction at four frequency bands — 4.3 GHz, 7.2 GHz, 12.3 GHz, and 15.15 GHz. On the other hand, this metasurface can achieve linear to circular or circular to linear polarization conversion at 4 GHz, 4.75–5.95 GHz, 8.35–8.8 GHz and 14.35–14.6 GHz frequency bands. Such multiband operation originates from multiple resonances occurring in the structure based on meandered square ring and diagonal split strip resonator. Moreover, the polarization transforming capability is stable for oblique incident angle up to $15^{o}$ , for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) polarizations. Furthermore, the proposed structure acts as a meta-reflector that maintains the handedness of the circular polarization upon reflection. Finally, a prototype of the proposed meta-structure is fabricated and measured for both normal and oblique incidence of electromagnetic waves. All the results present excellent resonant stability with respect to the different polarization and incident angles. In addition, we have also performed the tolerance analysis of different material parameters to understand the robustness of the structure. Due to the ability of the structure to perform three functionalities through a single layout, the proposed design can pave its way in different microwave applications such as satellite, radar, and 5G communications.

Abstract:Linear polarization (LP) and circular polarization (CP) holds paramount importance in Ku, K, and Ka bands for satellite based communication, and remote sensing applications. Satellite based remote sensing applications face challenges like atmospheric attenuation, noise & interference, and signal degradation. Moreover, satellite based communication application demands CP in two distinct, non-adjacent frequency bands with orthogonal polarizations at greater oblique angles, considering the unpredictable incidence angles of electromagnetic (EM) waves. Addressing these challenges, an innovative metasurface polarization converter is proposed to operate efficiently across the Ku-band (13.5-18.0 GHz), K-band (18.0-26.5 GHz), and Ka-band (26.5-38.5 GHz) frequency ranges. The converter achieves left-handed circular polarization (LHCP) in the Ku- and Ka-bands within the frequency ranges of 14.57-15.65 GHz and 27.47-33.85 GHz for y-polarized incident EM waves. Additionally, it provides right-handed circular polarization (RHCP) in the K- and Ka-bands at 17.27-23.92 GHz and 35.87-38.32 GHz for y-polarized incident EM waves. The LP conversion ratio exceeds 95% in the frequency bands of 15.97-16.85 GHz, 24.70-26.65 GHz, and 34.37-35.45 GHz for y-polarized, LHCP, and RHCP incident EM waves, respectively. The metasurface exhibits robust performance up to incidence angles of 45 degrees under oblique conditions. Experimental validation using traditional board-circuit manufacturing demonstrates close agreement between measured co- and cross-polarized reflection coefficients and simulations in the 13.5-18 GHz, and 24-38.5 GHz frequency range. Thin metasurface with a thickness of only 0.64 = 0.013λo mm, the proposed design outperforms existing studies in the literature, establishing its competitive edge in terms of structure and performance.
Dual‐band multifunctional metasurface for absorption and polarization conversion

Abstract:<p>In this paper, a multifunctional metasurface capable of switching between an absorber and a polarization converter is presented. The active metasurface comprises diamond‐shaped unit cells embedded with PIN diodes. The characteristic of the design lies in its capability of exhibiting multifunctionality at the same frequency of operation. The structure behaves as an absorber and linear polarization converter around 15 and 17 GHz when the PIN diode is switched ON and OFF, respectively. The working principle is demonstrated with the help of simulated results. Finally, the design is fabricated and measured, and it is seen that the results are in accordance with that of the simulated ones, establishing the concept behind switchability of absorber and polarization converter.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, a 2-bit reconfigurable reflective metasurface (RRM) with multifunction for both far-field pattern and polarization performance is proposed. To facilitate the independent design of two orthogonal polarizations as well as the diode integration at the bottom, the radiation and phase shifting parts are designed separately. The top patch is designed to receive and re-radiate EM waves, which converts the wave states between free-space wave and guided wave. The bottom phase shifting structure is designed to switch four phase states with 90° interval for the reflected guided wave. An 8×8 RRM is designed and fabricated using the proposed 2-bit element. Driven by a field programmable gate array (FPGA), the RRM achieves real-time control for different functions of beam deflection, radar cross section (RCS) reduction, and polarization conversion. The measured results show that the steered beam from -30° to +30° can be obtained around 3.83 GHz with different coding matrices, and more than 10 dB RCS reduction from 3.70 GHz to 3.84 GHz can be achieved by properly distributing phase responses randomly. Moreover, a linear polarization (LP) to left-handed circular polarization (LHCP) conversion in the range 3.82 GHz-3.85 GHz and right-handed circular polarization (RHCP) conversion in the range 3.68 GHz-3.82 GHz are realized by switching all the PIN diodes ON and OFF.
