Abstract:<p>In the present context of increasing population, renewable and sustainable energy alternatives are very much essential to satisfy the necessities of the world. To satisfy this growing demand, scientists are prioritizing the production of cost‐effective and high‐performance clean energy appliances. Dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are one such material that is at the forefront of modern solar cell technologies. Being one of the main components of DSSCs, metal‐free organic dyes play a crucial role in light processing and electron injection. In recent times, carbazole (CZ)‐, triphenylamine (TPA)‐, and phenothiazine (PTZ)‐based derivatives have been identified as suitable alternatives to Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes because they are easy to synthesize and exhibit excellent thermal and electronic properties. This review focuses largely on the latest developments in the use of monoanchored and multianchored CZ, TPA, and PTZ scaffolds for DSSC applications and focuses especially on the correlation between molecular design and photovoltaic performance. The physical properties of devices can be adjusted through the sensitizer's strategic design that helps to improve the performance of the devices. We tabulated the photovoltaic parameters corresponding to all dyes presented in this review. Also, applications of additives are presented after the systematic review on CZ‐, TPA‐, and PTZ‐based dyes.</p>

Abstract:The better optical and electrical properties provide successful dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) only when the energy alignment between the different materials is matched. When a dye absorbs sufficient light, a device generates electron-hole pairs, flows electrons at one end, and regenerates the dye at the other end. For opto-electrical property enhancement, better interactions between materials such as metal oxide semiconductor/dye (better anchoring molecules), semiconductor/dye/electrolyte (conductive, non-volatile, and stable electrolyte), and electrolyte/CE (high conductivity CE) are required. This review briefly describes the working mechanism of DSSC and the enhancement of optical and electrical properties by incorporating different materials used in various components. The factors include sintering temperature, illumination intensity, extracting solvent for dye, thin film coating methods, doping, composite ratio in semiconductors, CE, and variable additives used in electrolytes. In addition, the pH of the medium, crystallinity, morphology, co-sensitization of dye, and major pigments and anchoring groups in dye in terms of comparative solar parameters and other optical and electrical properties at different interfaces are included. It also provides the comparative performance of several solar cells by incorporating novel materials in semiconductors, dyes, electrolytes, and CE, which may have the potential for successful DSSC in the future. Finally, based on the available data from other researchers, a comparative study between natural and chemically synthesized dyes in terms of solar parameters has been discussed in the manuscript.

Theoretical Study of WS-9-Based Organic Sensitizers for Unusual Vis/NIR Absorption and Highly Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are the most promising low-cost photovoltaic devices. Whereas, the absorption bands of most organic sensitizers, the most vital component in DSSCs, are limited to a relatively narrow visible range. To obtain efficient sensitizer, a series of D-A-pi-A metal-free dyes have been designed based on one of the best sensitizers WS-9 by modifying auxiliary acceptor and characterized theoretically. The results illustrate that introduction of auxiliary heterocycle acceptor is revealed to very narrow band gap (HOMO-LUMO), leading to an obvious red-shifted broad near-infrared absorption band in the range of 750-1950 nm compared to WS-9 (536 nm). The critical parameters in close connection with the short-circuit current density (J(sc)), open circuit voltage (V-oc), including singlet excited state lifetime (tau), total dipole moments (mu(normal)), the conduction band of edge of the semiconductor substrate (Delta E-CB), and regeneration driving forces (Delta G(reg)) are superior to those of WS-9. Therefore, these novel sensitizers would be a promising candidate for improving the performance of the DSSCs.

Abstract:The main components of dye‐sensitized solar cells. Dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are among the most attractive third‐generation photovoltaic technologies due to their low toxicity, versatility, roll‐to‐roll compatibility, ultralightness, and attractive power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). However, their transition from the laboratory scale to the industrial scale has been slow due to their inability to compete with silicon‐based cells in terms of efficiencies and stabilities. Research activities on DSSCs have been ongoing for several decades to improve the efficiency and cost‐effectiveness of photovoltaics but these attempts are still inadequate. Their chemical and physical properties must be refined to increase efficiency and commercialization. This review provides a concise overview of the recent advances taking place in the DSSCs research field, including molecular engineering technologies, the quest for superior carrier transport materials (CTMs), efficient sensitizers, and better electrodes. Also, this review compiles knowledge of the historical development of DSSCs, the current advancements such as control of surface morphologies, doping strategies, modeling and simulation, characterization, and recent cutting‐edge research happenings in photovoltaic research. Finally, nanostructured materials that have been used as photoelectrodes and the practical applications of DSSCs in internet of things (IoT) and portable electronics are examined to identify challenges and future advancements. The main aim of this work is to be a pathfinder for scientific researchers in this field exploring various energy harvesting materials and optimization strategies of different components of DSSCs.

Abstract:The dye-sensitized nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cells (DSSCs) provide a promising alternative concept to conventional p–n junction photovoltaic devices. However, liquid-state DSSCs possess the problem of low stability since a volatile liquid electrolyte is utilized. An effective approach to solve such a problem is by replacing the volatile liquid electrolyte with solid-state or quasi solid-state hole conductor, such as p-type semiconductors, ionic liquid electrolyte and polymer electrolyte. In this paper, the recent progress on the selection and utilization of these hole conductors are mainly discussed. Research on mechanisms of solid-state DSSCs was also summarized here including the hole transfer process at dye/hole conductor interface, ionic transportation inside hole conductor media and the factors which depress the efficiency of solid-state cells. With a thorough analysis of the problems of solid-state DSSCs, several ways towards higher efficiency and lower cost are suggested.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have shown significant potential for indoor and building-integrated photovoltaic applications. Herein we present three new D-A-π-A organic sensitizers, XY1, XY2, and XY3, that exhibit high molar extinction coefficients and a broad absorption range. Molecular modifications of these dyes, featuring a benzothiadiazole (BTZ) auxiliary acceptor, were achieved by introducing a thiophene heterocycle as well as by shifting the position of BTZ on the conjugated bridge. The ensuing high molar absorption coefficients enabled the fabrication of highly efficient thin-film solid-state DSSCs with only 1.3 μm mesoporous TiO2 layer. XY2 with a molar extinction coefficient of 6.66 × 10(4) M(-1) cm(-1) at 578 nm led to the best photovoltaic performance of 7.51%.

Abstract:In this study, various types of dye molecules, including natural, organic, and metal-free organic dyes, designed for application in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), were investigated using various computational chemistry approaches. These sensitizers show promising potential for enhancing the photovoltaic performance of DSSCs. Additionally, multiple aspects of molecular properties and charge transfer processes, crucial for solar cells, were analyzed. Different structural configurations of dye molecules were considered, encompassing (D)l–( π )m–(A)n, D– π – π –A, D–D– π –A, D–A– π –A, D– π –A– π –A, A–D– π –D–A, A–D–A–D–A, D–D– π – π –A, A– π –D– π –A, and (D)2 –A– π –A. Each component within these molecular structures within a given material type significantly impacts the analysis of quantum chemistry properties and the performance of DSSCs. Furthermore, the effects of various π -bridges, electron donors, electron acceptors, and anchor groups within the photosensitizer's structure on their photovoltaic properties were discussed. The remarkable electron-donating and electron-withdrawing capabilities of donor and acceptor units, the extension of π -conjugated systems, and the incorporation of anchor groups into the backbone were found to enhance DSSC performance. These findings recommend their application in solar cell technology.

Abstract:Due to their benefits like low cost, simple processing, mass production, and effective conversion of solar energy into electrical energy, dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) devices have garnered a lot of attention in the scientific community over the past few years. It is well known that the architecture and composition of the photosensitizers play a key role in improving the functioning of the DSSC. Among the many types of fundamental units, benzimidazole and quinoxaline architectures have been particularly effective in the fabrication of DSSCs due to their extreme flexibility. The main aim of this review discussion is to focus on the application of benzimidazole and quinoxaline dyes in DSSC. Incorporating benzimidazole and quinoxaline units into dyes with a D−π−A arrangement showed enhance light-harvesting, optoelectronic, electrochemical, and photovoltaic capabilities while preventing electron recombination processes. Moreover, the maximum efficiency of benzimidazole when incorporated as ancillary donor, main donor, acceptor, n-spacer and ligand have been demonstrated. Therefore, the performance of quinoxaline dyes based on internal acceptor with one donor at (5, 8), double donor at (5, 8), double donor at (2, 3) positions as well as fused quinoxaline-Indolo based donor unit have been received a particular attention in this work. This comparative and comprehensive overview provides up-to-date knowledge and may serve as a lighthouse for young aspiring researchers interested in exploring molecular engineering potential for creating and synthesizing more efficient exotic materials for solar cells.

Abstract:The cost, stability, and photovoltaic performance of photosensitizers play a key role in the commercialization of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Herein, three novel sensitizers termed ZS10, ZS11, and ZS12 are described based on the simple chemical structure of the high-voltage dye MS5, by replacing the benzoic-acid-anchoring group with a 2-cyanobenzoic acid, phenyl-cyanoacrylic acid, and ethynyl-phenyl-cyanoacrylic-acid-anchoring group, respectively. Through engineering of the dye structure, ZS12-based devices show the best efficiency of 10.7% under standard AM1.5 G conditions, with an improved photocurrent of 12.26 mA cm−2 and an outstanding photovoltage of 1.18 V. Remarkably, ZS12-sensitized solar cells exhibit excellent stability, maintaining 95% of its initial PCE under full sunlight for 800 h. Moreover, the low synthesis cost of dye ZS12 (less than 100 $ g−1) developed in this work is an attractive feature, facilitating the market development of DSCs based on efficient and stable sensitizers.

Abstract:The high-molar-extinction-coefficient heteroleptic ruthenium dye, cis-Ru (4,4'-bis(5-octylthieno[3,2-b] thiophen-2-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine) (4,4'-dicarboxyl-2,2'-bipyridine) (NCS)(2), exhibits an AM 1.5 solar (100 mW cm(-2))-to-electric power-conversion efficiency of 4.6% in a solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell (SSDSC) with 2,2', 7,7'-tetrakis-(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)9,9'-spirobifluorene (spiro-MeOTAD) as the organic hole-transporting material. These SSDSC devices exhibit good durability during accelerated tests under visible-light soaking for 1000 h at 60 degrees C. This demonstration elucidates a class of photovoltaic devices with potential for stable and low-cost power generation. The electron recombination dynamics and charge collection that take place at the dye-sensitized heterojunction are studied by means of impedance and transient photovoltage decay techniques.

Abstract:In recent years, there is a growing interest in the development of sustainable sensitizers for the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) applications. The earth-abundant transition metal complexes offer a potential alternative option to the problematic ruthenium-based dyes, owing to their interesting photophysical properties and eco-friendly nature. This review accounts in detail the development of sustainable late transition metal-sensitizers in the DSSCs. Attempts are made to comprehensively describe the various strategies involved in the molecular design of the potential dye-molecules as well as the methodologies involved in the cell-fabrication. We hope that this review will serve as a promptuary to the researchers and inspire further developments in this field.

Abstract:Charge recombination has always been the main factor restricting the performance improvement of dyesensitized solar cells (DSSCs). From the view of the dye structure, the introduction of substituents like alkoxy/alkyl chains with a large steric hindrance is one of the commonly used strategies to enhance the blocking effect of dye molecules at the interface between TiO2 and the electrolyte/ hole conductor. As a result, the charge recombination can be effectively hampered to improve the solar cells' performance. Here, we review the recent progress and molecular designs in the field of organic sensitizers with o,p-dialkoxyphenyl (DAP)-based bulky donor groups. The advantages and disadvantages of the bulky donor groups for the absorption spectrum, charge recombination and dye regeneration are discussed. At the end, feasible design strategies of organic sensitizers for achieving high open-circuit voltage (V-oc), short circuit photocurrent density (J(sc)) and stability in both liquid-electrolyte DSSCs and all-solid-state DSSCs are proposed.

Abstract:Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) belong to the group of thin-film solar cells which have been under extensive research for more than two decades due to their low cost, simple preparation methodology, low toxicity and ease of production. Still, there is lot of scope for the replacement of current DSSC materials due to their high cost, less abundance, and long-term stability. The efficiency of existing DSSCs reaches up to 12%, using Ru(II) dyes by optimizing material and structural properties which is still less than the efficiency offered by first- and second-generation solar cells, i.e., other thin-film solar cells and Si-based solar cells which offer ~ 20–30% efficiency. This article provides an in-depth review on DSSC construction, operating principle, key problems (low efficiency, low scalability, and low stability), prospective efficient materials, and finally a brief insight to commercialization.

Abstract:Dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) have received considerable attention due to its advantages of both photosensitized dyes and inorganic semi-conclucting materials, wider light response range, simple manufacturing process, relatively low cost, environment friendly property and extensive perspective in applications. This review focus mainly on porphyrin-metal complexes based sensitizers. The basic construction and the photovoltaic principle of DSSC are introduced. The applications of varies porphyrins in the DSSC are reviewed from the viewpoint of improving the solar cell properties, in particular the influence of porphyrin substituents and their supramolecular structures on the photovoltaic efficiency.

Abstract:Among other photovoltaic techniques including perovskite solar cells and organic solar cells, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are considered to be a potential alternative to conventional silicon solar cells. Porphyrins are promising dyes with the properties of easy modification and superior light-harvesting capability. However, porphyrin dyes still suffer from a number of unfavorable aspects, which need to be addressed in order to improve the photovoltaic performance. This feature article briefly summarizes the recent progress in improving the V oc and J sc of porphyrin-based DSSCs in terms of molecular engineering by modifying the porphyrin macrocycle, donor and acceptor moieties of the porphyrin dyes, coadsorption of the porphrin dyes with bulky coadsorbents like chenodeoxycholic acid ( CDCA ), and cosensitization of the porphyrin dyes with metal-free organic dyes. Notably, concerted companion (CC) dyes are described in detail, which have been constructed by linking a porphyrin dye subunit and a metal-free organic dye subunit with flexible alkoxy chains to achieve panchromatic absorption and concerted enhancement of V oc and J sc . In one sentence, this article is expected to provide further insights into the development of high performance DSSCs through the design and syntheses of efficient porphyrin dyes and CC dyes in combination with device optimization to achieve simultaneously elevated V oc and J sc , which may inspire and promote further progress in the commercialization of the DSSCs.

Abstract:In the 1800s, as the primary energy resource, the industrial revolution started with fossil fuels. Various research efforts have been carried out in finding an alternative for photovoltaic devices to traditional silicon (Si)-based solar cells. During the last three decades, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been investigated largely. DSSCs due to their simple preparation methodology, low cost, ease of production, and low toxicity have been used widely. This review helps the readers to fabricate the DSSC and to familiarize themselves with the operation and overview of DSSC principles and to improve the efficient possible routes for these devices to thrive and emerge. In addition to that, manufacturing, stability, and efficiency improvements need to be addressed in the future for these technologies to be discussed and to represent their suitability as a breakthrough of consumer electronics in the market. An overview of developing current prototypes of DSSC and products of the main companies is included.

Abstract:It is universally accepted that the financial advancement of a state is essentially dependent upon the energy sector as it is essential in the growth, development, and improvement of the farming, mechanical, and defense sectors. A dependable source of energy is expected to enhance society's expectation of everyday comforts. Modern industrial advancement, which is indispensable for any nation, relies upon electricity. The principal explanation behind the energy emergency is rapidly increasing the use of hydrocarbon resources. Thus, the use of renewable resources is essential to overcome this dilemma. The consumption of hydrocarbon fuels and their discharge has destructive consequences on our surroundings. Third-generation photovoltaic (solar) cells are latest encouraging option in solar cells. Currently, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) utilize organic (natural and synthetic) dye and inorganic (ruthenium) as a sensitizer. The nature of this dye combined with different variables has brought about a change in its use. Natural dyes are a feasible alternative in comparison to expensive and rare ruthenium dye owing to their low cast, easy utility, abundant supply of resources, and no environmental threat. In this review, the dyes generally utilized in DSSC are discussed. The DSSC criteria and components are explained, and the progress in inorganic and natural dyes is monitored. Scientists involved in this emerging technology will benefit from this examination.

Metal‐Free Organic Dyes for NiO‐Based Dye‐Sensitized Solar Cells: Recent Developments and Future Perspectives

Abstract:This work offers a comprehensive review of recent advancements and challenges in utilizing metal‐free organic dyes for dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), with a focus on NiO‐based photoanodes. It provides valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in the field of renewable energy, particularly those interested in the design and optimization of efficient DSSC materials. The increasing global demand for energy and growing environmental concerns emphasize the crucial role of solar energy as a sustainable and nondepletable resource. Solar cells, particularly dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), have gained prominence due to their efficient conversion of solar power, ecofriendly manufacturing processes, and noteworthy stability. Current research in sustainable energy focuses on transitioning from metal‐based to metal‐free organic materials. Tandem solar cells, combining n‐type and p‐type semiconductors sensitized with diverse photoactive dyes, show potential to surpass thermodynamic limits in photon conversion efficiency. Notably, the exploration of n‐type DSSCs as photoanodes in tandem architectures is promising. However, the absence of efficient p‐type photoactive cathodes remains a significant obstacle. Global research efforts are dedicated to addressing charge recombination issues in NiO‐based devices to enhance the efficiency of p‐type DSSCs. The success of any DSSC hinges on the selection of dyes/sensitizers with suitable anchoring groups, wide absorption in the visible–NIR region, and a high extinction coefficient. This article comprehensively reviews advancements in developing highly efficient p‐type sensitizers, emphasizing their pivotal role in unlocking the full potential of tandem solar cells.
