Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies are widely applied in various industries and research fields and are currently the subject of intensive investigation and development. However, high-performance materials that are suitable for 3D printing are still in short supply, which is a major limitation for 3D printing, particularly for biomedical applications. The physicochemical properties of single constituent materials may not be sufficient to meet the needs of modern biotechnology development and production. To enhance the materials' performance and broaden their applications, this work designed and tested a series of titanate nanofiller (nanowire and nanotube)-enhanced polycaprolactone (PCL) composites that were 3D-printable and provided superior mechanical properties. By grafting two different functional groups (phenyl- and thiol-terminated ligands), the nanofiller surface showed improved hydrophobicity, which significantly improved their dispersion in the PCL matrix. After characterizing the surface modification, we evaluated the significance of the homogeneity of the ceramic nanofiller in terms of printability, formability, and mechanical strength. Melt electrowriting additive manufacturing was used to fabricate microfibers of PCL and PCL/nanofiller composites. Improved nanofiller dispersion enabled intact and uniform sample morphology, and in contrast, nanofiller aggregation greatly varied the viscosity during the printing process, which could result in poorly printed structures. Importantly, the modified ceramic/PCL composite delivered enhanced and stable mechanical properties, where its Young's modulus was measured to be 1.67 GPa, which is more than 7 times higher compared to that of pristine PCL (0.22 GPa). Retaining the cell safety properties (comparable to PCL), the concept of enhancing biocompatible polymers with modified nanofillers shows great potential in the field of customized 3D printing for biomedicine.

Abstract:3D printing is a rapid and accessible fabrication technology that engenders creative custom design solutions for cell scaffolds, perfusion systems and cell culture systems for tissue engineering. Critical to its success is the biocompatibility of the materials used, which should allow long-term tissue culture without affecting cell viability or inducing an inflammatory response for in vitro and in vivo applications. Polyjet 3D printers offer arguably the highest resolution with the fewest design constraints of any commercially available 3D printing systems. Although widely used for rapid-prototyping of medical devices and 3D anatomical modelling, polyjet printing has not been adopted by the tissue engineering field, largely due to the cytotoxicity of leachates from the printed parts. Biocompatibility in the context of cell culture is not commonly addressed for polyjet materials, as they tend to be optimised for their ability to fabricate complex structures. In order to study the potential issues surrounding the leaching of toxins, we prepared cell culture substrates using the commercially available MED610 photopolymer. The substrates were cleaned using either the manufacturer-specified 'biocompatible' washing procedures, or a novel protocol incorporating a sonication in isopropanol and water step. We then compared the effectiveness of these both in vitro and in vivo. Using primary mouse myoblast cultures, the manufacturer's protocol led to inconsistent and poorer cell viability when compared to the sonication protocol (p = 0.0002 at 48 h after indirect exposure). Subdermal implantation of MED610 into nude rats demonstrated a significant foreign body response with a greater number of giant cells (p = 0.0161) and foreign bodies (p = 0.0368) when compared to the sonication protocol, which was comparable to the control (sham) groups. These results present an improved, cytocompatible cleaning protocol of printable photopolymers to facilitate creative 3D-printed custom designs for cell culture systems for both in vitro and in vivo tissue engineering applications.

Abstract:3D printing is gaining popularity by providing a tool for fast, cost-effective, and highly customizable fabrication. However, little is known about the toxicity of 3D-printed objects. In this work, we assess the toxicity of printed parts from two main classes of commercial 3D printers, fused deposition modeling and stereo-lithography. We assessed the toxicity of these 3D-printed parts using zebrafish (Dania rerio), a widely used model organism in aquatic toxicology. Zebrafish embryos were exposed to 3D-printed parts and monitored for rates of survival, hatching, and developmental abnormalities. We found that parts from both types of printers were measurably toxic to zebrafish embryos, with STL-printed parts significantly more toxic than FDM-printed parts. We also developed a simple post-printing treatment (exposure to ultraviolet light) that largely mitigates the toxicity of the STL-printed parts. Our results call attention to the need for strategies for the safe disposal of 3D-printed parts and printer waste materials.

Abstract:This study presents a facile and low‐cost protocol to improve the biocompatibility of clear photoresins that feature prominently in light‐actuated 3D printing methods such as stereolithography and digital‐light printing. Using a combination of isopropanol washes with a short post‐UV photocuring, a dramatic minimization of cytotoxicity can be obtained to expand the use of such resins for various biodevice applications. Light‐based 3D printing techniques, including stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP), are of great utility owing to their ability to create complex geometries with high speed, high spatial resolution, and often, optical transparency. These are useful for fabricating custom components and structures for various biomedical applications—scaffolds, implants, microfluidic devices, in vitro cellular experiments, etc. However, a drawback of light‐based methods is that uncured resin monomers and other additives have the potential for cytotoxic effects, adversely impacting cells and tissues. In this study, we investigate a facile method to process light‐based 3D printing to mitigate cytotoxicity. Three optically clear, photocurable resins—a commercially available acrylate‐based resin, BioMed Clear, and an ecoresin derived from soybean oil—are subjected to various post‐treatment protocols. These involve combinations of isopropanol (IPA) washing, UV curing, and water or IPA agitation. The in vitro cytotoxicity and effect on cell proliferation are characterized using two cell lines (myoblasts and fibroblasts). Compared to untreated controls, IPA or water wash, and cleaning with a commercial developer, the results indicate that a short postprint cure with double IPA wash effectively reduces cytotoxicity across all resins, particularly BioMed Clear and ecoresin, maintaining nearly 100% cell viability after 7 days and avoiding material cloudiness or brittleness. The study therefore highlights a low‐cost postprint treatment method applicable to existing commercial resins and 3D printers. The minimization in leachate and cytotoxicity of optically clear 3D‐printed parts can pave the way for broader adoption in resource‐limited settings and safer use in cell studies, microfluidics, and other biomedical applications.

Abstract:Abstract Due to its high printing resolution and ability to print multiple materials simultaneously, inkjet technology has found wide application in medicine. However, the biological safety of 3D-printed objects is not always guaranteed due to residues of uncured resins or support materials and must therefore be verified. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of standard assessment methods for determining the quality and properties of polyjet-printed scaffolds in terms of their dimensional accuracy, surface topography, and cytotoxic potential. Standardized 3D-printed samples were produced in two printing orientations (horizontal or vertical). Printing accuracy and surface roughness was assessed by size measurements, VR-5200 3D optical profilometer dimensional analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Cytotoxicity tests were performed with a representative cell line (L929) in a comparative laboratory study. Individual experiments were performed with primary cells from clinically relevant tissues and with a Toxdent cytotoxicity assay. Dimensional measurements of printed discs indicated high print accuracy and reproducibility. Print accuracy was highest when specimens were printed in horizontal direction. In all cytotoxicity tests, the estimated mean cell viability was well above 70% ( p < 0.0001) regardless of material and printing direction, confirming the low cytotoxicity of the final 3D-printed objects. Achieving biocompatibility and tailoring mechanical properties of SLA 3D printed devices for microfluidic and cell culture applications

Abstract:Stereolithography (SLA) and other photopolymerization-based additive manufacturing approaches are becoming popular for the fabrication of microfluidic devices and cell-infused platforms, but many of the resins employed in these techniques are cytotoxic to cells or do not have the appropriate mechanical properties for microfluidic components. Here, using a commercially available resin, we demonstrate that biocompatibility and a range of mechanical properties can be achieved through post-print optimization involving baking, soaking, network swelling, and UV exposure. We show that UV-vis spectrophotometry can be used to detect methacrylate monomer/oligomer, and utilizing this method, we found that baking at 120 °C for 24 hours was the optimal method for removing cytotoxic chemical species and creating nontoxic cell culture platforms, though UV exposure and soaking in 100% ethanol also can substantially reduce cytotoxicity. Furthermore, we show that the mechanical properties can be modified, including up to 50% for the Young's modulus and an order of magnitude for the flexural modulus, through the post-processing approach employed. Based on the study results, users can choose post-processing approaches to achieve needed cytotoxicity and mechanical profiles, simultaneously.

Abstract:Abstract Comparing to fused deposition modeling (FDM), the stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing method can provide higher fabrication speed and much better resolution, which is demanded by biomedical usage. However, the additives migrating from SLA printed plastic are toxic to creatures, and the method to reduce the toxicity by soaking and exposure to ultraviolet is inadequate, while current biocompatible photo-polymerizing resins are rare and expensive. Here, we provide a method to nearly block all toxicity by coating the fabrication with parylene C. We use early life zebrafish to assess the toxicity of the SLA printed petri dishes whether or not coated with parylene C. The result shows nearly no influence of the coated petri dishes cultured early life zebrafish development compared to control groups, while the fertilized embryos of uncoated groups get killed in 24 hours. The method provides a cheap and easy way to produce customized biocompatible fabrication, which contributes to the popularization of 3D printed products, either in daily life or in research.

Abstract:This paper discusses the potential of additive printing, the risks it poses to users' health (including 3D printer operators) and the effects of chemical substances released during the printing based on the available in vitro and in vivo studies. It was shown that substances emitted during printing with the commonly used acrylonitrile butadiene styrene filament in additive manufacturing might have carcinogenic, hepatotoxic and teratogenic effects, as well as toxic effect on the respiratory system. The latest research on the mechanism of formation of particles and volatile organic compounds during 3D printing, the parameters affecting their potential emission, and trends in reducing these hazards are indicated. The need for the design of more environmentally friendly and less emissive printing materials, as well as strategies for prevention and individual and collective protection measures are emphasized. Users of 3D printers should be familiar with all possible aspects of the threats associated with the printing process. Insufficient data on direct exposure to chemicals and particles released during the use of filaments makes it difficult to build awareness of safe working practices. Of particular concern is the health impact of emitted chemicals and particles from thermally treated materials in one of the most popular technologies for 3D printing, i.e., fused deposition modelling. Exposure of the users to, e.g., plasticizers added to filaments occurs through a variety of routes, by absorption through the skin, by inhalation or ingestion. Available epidemiological data, as well as current experimental works, indicate that such exposure is a high risk of cardiovascular diseases, atherosclerosis in adults, and cardiac problems and metabolic disorders in children. This review, by identifying potential risk factors, may contribute to reducing the health loss of printer users and improving working conditions and safety, especially in enterprises where additive manufacturing technology is used. Abstract:3D printing is attracting considerable interest for its capacity to produce prototypes and small production runs rapidly. Fused deposit modeling (FDM) was used to produce polyvalent test plates for investigation of the physical, chemical, and in-vitro biological properties of printed materials. The polyvalent test plates (PVTPs) are poly-lactic acid cylinders, 14 mm in diameter and 3 mm in height. The polymer ester backbone was surface modified by a series of ramified and linear oligoamines to increase its hydrophilicity and introduce a positive charge. The chemical modification was verified by FT-IR spectroscopy, showing the introduction of amide and amine functions, and contact angle measurements confirmed increased hydrophilicity. Morphology studies (SEM, optical microscopy) indicated that the modification of PVTP possessed a planar morphology with small pits. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy demonstrated that the polymeric free volume decreased on modification. An MTT-based prolonged cytotoxicity test using Caco-2 cells showed that the PVTPs are non-toxic at the cellular level. The presence of surface oligoamines on the PVTPs reduced biofilm formation by Candida albicans SC5314 significantly. The results demonstrate that 3D printed objects may be modified at their surface by a simple amidation reaction, resulting in a reduced propensity for biofilm colonization and cellular toxicity.

Abstract:Abstract The introduction of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and soft lithography in the 90’s has revolutionized the field of microfluidics by almost eliminating the need for a clean-room environment for device fabrication. More recently, 3D printing has been introduced to fabricate molds for soft lithography, the only step for which a clean-room environment is still often necessary, to further support the rapid prototyping of PDMS microfluidic devices. However, toxicity of most of the commercial 3D printing resins has been established, and little is known regarding the potential for 3D printed molds to leak components into the PDMS that would, in turn, hamper cells and/or tissues cultured in the devices. In the present study, we investigated if 3D printed molds produced by stereolithography can leach components into PDMS, and compared 3D printed molds to their more conventional SU-8 counterparts. Different leachates were detected in aqueous solutions incubated in the resulting PDMS devices prepared from widely used PDMS pre-polymer:curing agent ratios (10:1, 15:1 and 20:1), and these leachates were identified as originating from resins and catalyst substances. Next, we explored the possibility to culture cells and tissues in these PDMS devices produced from 3D printed molds and after proper device washing and conditioning. Importantly, we demonstrated that the resulting PDMS devices supported physiological cultures of HeLa cells and ovarian tissues in vitro , with superior outcomes than static conventional cultures.

Abstract:The fast development of low-cost desktop three-dimensional (3D) printers has made those devices widely accessible for goods manufacturing at home. However, is it safe? Users may belittle the effects or influences of pollutants (organic compounds and ultrafine particles) generated by the devices in question. Within the scope of this study, the authors attempt to investigate thermal decomposition of the following commonly used, commercially available thermoplastic filaments: acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), polylactic acid (PLA), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and nylon. Thermogravimetric analysis has shown the detailed thermal patterns of their behavior upon increasing temperature in neutral atmosphere, while GC analysis of organic vapors emitted during the process of heating thermoplastics have made it possible to obtain crucial pieces of information about the toxicity of 3D printing process. The conducted study has shown that ABS is significantly more toxic than PLA. The emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) has been in the range of 0.50 µmol/h. Styrene has accounted for more than 30% of total VOC emitted from ABS, while for PLA, methyl methacrylate has been detected as the predominant compound (44% of total VOCs emission). Moreover, the authors have summarized available or applicable methods that can eliminate formed pollutants and protect the users of 3D printers. This article summarizes theoretical knowledge on thermal degradation of polymers used for 3D printers and shows results of authors' investigation, as well as presents forward-looking solutions that may increase the safety of utilization of 3D printers.

Toxicity risks of occupational exposure in 3D printing and bioprinting industries: A systematic review

Abstract:3-Dimensional (3D) printing and bioprinting are the new technologies. In 3D printing, synthetic polymers such as acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene, polylactic acid, nylon, and some metals are used as feedstocks. During 3D printing, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nanoparticles can be released. In the bioprinting process, natural polymers are most commonly used. All of these materials have direct and indirect toxic effects in exposed people. Therefore, the aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive review of toxicity risks due to occupational exposure to pollutants in the 3D printing and bioprinting industries. The Cochrane review method was used as a guideline for systematic review. Articles were searched in the databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. This systematic review showed that VOCs and ultra-fine particles are often released in fused deposition modeling and selective laser sintering, respectively. Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, allergic rhinitis, and DNA damage were observed in occupational exposure to synthetic polymers. Metal nanoparticles can induce adverse health effects on the respiratory and nervous systems. This study emphasized the need to further study the toxicity of 3D printing and bioprinting-induced air pollutants. Also, consideration of safety and health principles is necessary in 3D printing and bioprinting workplaces.
Toxicity evaluation of particles formed during 3D-printing: Cytotoxic, genotoxic, and inflammatory response in lung and macrophage models

Abstract:Additive manufacturing (AM) or "3D-printing" is a ground-breaking technology that enables the production of complex 3D parts. Its rapid growth calls for immediate toxicological investigations of possible human exposures in order to estimate occupational health risks. Several laser-based powder bed fusion AM techniques are available of which many use metal powder in the micrometer range as feedstock. Large energy input from the laser on metal powders generates several by-products, like spatter and condensate particles. Due to often altered physicochemical properties and composition, spatter and condensate particles can result in different toxicological responses compared to the original powder particles. The toxicity of such particles has, however, not yet been investigated. The aim of the present study was to investigate the toxicity of condensate/spatter particles formed and collected upon selective laser melting (SLM) printing of metal alloy powders, including a nickel-chromium-based superalloy (IN939), a nickel-based alloy (Hastelloy X, HX), a high-strength maraging steel (18Ni300), a stainless steel (316L), and a titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V). Toxicological endpoints investigated included cytotoxicity, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), genotoxicity (comet and micronucleus formation), and inflammatory response (cytokine/chemokine profiling) following exposure of human bronchial epithelial cells (HBEC) or monocytes/macrophages (THP-1). The results showed no or minor cytotoxicity in the doses tested (10-100 μg/mL). Furthermore, no ROS generation or formation of micronucleus was observed in the HBEC cells. However, an increase in DNA strand breaks (detected by comet assay) was noted in cells exposed to HX, IN939, and Ti6Al4V, whereas no evident release of pro-inflammatory cytokine was observed from macrophages. Particle and surface characterization showed agglomeration in solution and different surface oxide compositions compared to the nominal bulk content. The extent of released nickel was small and related to the nickel content of the surface oxides, which was largely different from the bulk content. This may explain the limited toxicity found despite the high Ni bulk content of several powders. Taken together, this study suggests relatively low acute toxicity of condensates/spatter particles formed during SLM-printing using IN939, HX, 18Ni300, 316L, and Ti6Al4V as original metal powders.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing has become an important tool in modern medicine with numerous applications such as therapy planning, medical device prototyping and testing, and basic research. While the range of available materials continues to grow, the field of elastic printable materials for medical applications has not been fully explored. Therefore, this study focuses on the comparison of six commercially available flexible printing materials regarding their usability in the medical field. Surface of printed parts for all materials were analyzed directly after printing by scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical behavior was evaluated by uniaxial tensile tests, shore A hardness, and vascular compliance analysis. The degradation effects of the solvents water, glycerin, and ethanol were analyzed over a period of 7 days. The impact of different sterilization protocols (steam, plasma, ethylene oxide) was determined by tensile testing and surface imaging. Cytotoxicity was evaluated by a WST-1 proliferation assay with human endothelial cells. Microscopic imaging revealed a uniform surface with characteristic topologies depending on the printing technique. Different sterilization techniques revealed good results, however, pure silicone material TrueSil® showed complete mechanical failure after plasma sterilization. All materials demonstrated high resistance to water and glycerin exposure with only slight weight changes. Ethanol exposure led to significant increases in wet weight with Agilus30 reaching a weight increase of 104.6%. All materials except Aceo showed a decrease in dry weight after ethanol exposure. Formlabs' Flexible 80A and Elastic 50A, as well as Agilus30, showed high cytotoxicity with no cell viability after 24 h. Aceo and TrueSil silicone materials revealed adequate cytocompatibility with viable cells even after 7 days. Static and dynamic vascular elasticity of all tested materials revealed linear elastic behavior. The tested materials offer unique material properties for different use cases, with the recapitulation of vascular elasticity still being a weak point of current printing technologies.

Abstract:Biohybrid devices integrate biological and synthetic materials. The selection of an appropriate synthetic material to interface with living cells and tissues is crucial due to cellular chemical and mechanical sensitivities. As such, the stiffness of the material and its biocompatibility while in direct contact must be considered. In this study, the material properties and biocompatibility of six commercially available, 3D printable resins (three rigid and three elastomeric) were assessed for their suitability for biohybrid actuators. To characterize the material, uniaxial tension and compression tests with post-hoc Hookean and Yeoh model analyses were conducted for both nonsterile and sterilized (ethanol-soaking or autoclaved) samples. The mechanical properties of the elastomeric resins were minimally impacted by the different sterilization techniques. However, both Phrozen AquaGray 8K and Liqcreate Bio-Med Clear rigid resins were significantly softer in tensile tests after sterilization, and AquaGray became far more ductile. Asiga DentaGUIDE was much more stable in its mechanical properties than the other rigid resins. It was also shown that long-term exposure to saline solutions leads to a decrease in the Young's moduli of these rigid resins before any sterilization has occurred. The print fidelity was also assessed for nonsterile and sterilized samples via manual scoring to determine the impacts of the sterilization processes on the part fidelity. Sterilization techniques had a minimal impact on print fidelity for both elastomeric and ridged resins with two exceptions. In both Formlabs Silicone 40A IPA/BuOAc post-treatment and Phrozen AquaGrey 8K groups, ethanol/UV-sterilization caused more degradation compared to autoclave-sterilization. In addition to the material analyses, cytotoxicity analyses using calcein AM and ethidium homodimer-1 fluorescence markers were conducted by directly culturing C2C12, a common myoblast cell line used in bioactuators, with sterilized resin samples. Of the elastomeric resins, only Formlabs Silicone 40A was shown to have minimal impacts on cell viability. For the rigid resins, Asiga DentaGUIDE, Liqcreate Bio-Med Clear, and ethanol-sterilized Phrozen AquaGray 8K demonstrated minimal impacts on cell viability. Based on these analyses, Asiga DentaGUIDE and Formlabs Silicone 40A demonstrate potential for applications in biohybrid muscle-based actuators when using low-cost 3D printers.

Abstract:Research on polymer materials for additive manufacturing technology in biomedical applications is as promising as it is numerous, but biocompatibility of printable materials still remains a big challenge. Changes occurring during the 3D-printing processes itself may have adverse effects on the compatibility of the completed print. This prospective will put emphasis on the different additives and processes that can have a direct impact on biocompatibility during and after 3D printing of polymer materials.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing (AM) is a versatile technology with potential applications in healthcare and medical instruments, where surface disinfection or sterilization is essential. This study comprehensively the effect of commonly used cost-effective disinfectants, ethanol (70 V/V%) and chlorine solution on the mechanical and thermal properties of flexible 3D printed materials. The following materials were tested before and after a 5-cycle surface disinfection : Flexfill TPE 90A, Phyton Flex (TPU) for material extrusion, Flexible (resin), Elastic 50A (resin) for vat photopolymerization and Flexa Black (TPU) material for powder bed fusion technology. Mechanical tests included tensile, compression, Charpy impact, flex resistance and stress relaxation tests, as well as Shore A hardness and volume measurements. The structure was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM)and Raman spectroscopy. The cytotoxicity was assessed using a A549 cell viability assay. The results show that after disinfection, significant changes occurred mainly in the tensile and Shore A properties, such as the tensile strength of the disinfected Flexible (resin) materials was 3.44 MPa ± 0.51 MPa (ethanol) and 2.62 MPa ± 0.31 MPa compared to the native 2.02 MPa ± 0.24 MPa. Interestingly, the applied surface disinfectants can negatively affect biocompatibility. Medical devices have been designed and fabricated based on the findings. Our findings can serve as a guide to the potential applications of commonly used 3D printed flexible materials in the biomedical field.

Abstract:Fused filament fabrication is a 3D printing technique that has gained widespread use from homes to schools to workplaces. Thermoplastic filaments, such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and polylactic acid (PLA), are extruded at temperatures near their respective glass transition temperature or melting point, respectively. Little has been reported on the inorganic elemental composition and concentrations present in these materials or the methods available for extracting that information. Because inorganic constituents may be included in the aerosolized particulates emitted during the printing process, identifying elements that could be present and at what specific concentrations is critical. The objective of the current research is to determine the range of metals present in thermoplastic filaments along with their relative abundance and chemical speciation as a function of polymer type, manufacturer, and color. A variety of filaments from select manufacturers were digested using a range of techniques to determine the optimal conditions for metal extraction from ABS and PLA polymers. The extraction potential for each method was quantified using by ICP-MS analysis. When possible, further characterization of the chemical composition of the filaments was investigated using X-ray Absorption spectroscopy to determine chemical speciation of the metal. Optimal digestion conditions were established using a high temperature, high pressure microwave-assisted acid digestion method to produce the most complete and repeatable extraction results. The composition and abundance of metals in the filaments varied greatly as a function of polymer, manufacturer, and color. Potential elements of concern present in the filaments at elevated concentration included that could pose a respiratory risk included Si, Al, Ti, Cu, Zn, and Sn. XAS analysis revealed a mixture of metal oxides, mineral, and organometallic compounds were present in the filaments that were being used to increase opaqueness impart color (dyes), polymeric catalysts, and flame retardants. This work shows that a variety of metals are present in the starting materials used for 3D printing and depending on their partitioning into 3D printed products and byproducts as well as the exposure route, may pose a health risk which merits further investigation.
The Effect of Disinfectants Absorption and Medical Decontamination on the Mechanical Performance of 3D-Printed ABS Parts

Abstract:Producing parts by 3D printing based on the material extrusion process determines the formation of air gaps within layers even at full infill density, while external pores can appear between adjacent layers making prints permeable. For the 3D-printed medical devices, this open porosity leads to the infiltration of disinfectant solutions and body fluids, which might pose safety issues. In this context, this research purpose is threefold. It investigates which 3D printing parameter settings are able to block or reduce permeation, and it experimentally analyzes if the disinfectants and the medical decontamination procedure degrade the mechanical properties of 3D-printed parts. Then, it studies acetone surface treatment as a solution to avoid disinfectants infiltration. The absorption tests results indicate the necessity of applying post-processing operations for the reusable 3D-printed medical devices as no manufacturing settings can ensure enough protection against fluid intake. However, some parameter settings were proven to enhance the sealing, in this sense the layer thickness being the most important factor. The experimental outcomes also show a decrease in the mechanical performance of 3D-printed ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) instruments treated by acetone cold vapors and then medical decontaminated (disinfected, cleaned, and sterilized by hydrogen peroxide gas plasma sterilization) in comparison to the control prints. These results should be acknowledged when designing and 3D printing medical instruments.

Abstract:The most prevalent materials used in the Additive Manufacturing era are polymers and plastics. Unfortunately, these materials are recognized for their negative environmental impact as they are primarily non‐recyclable, resulting in environmental pollution. In recent years, a new sustainable alternative to these materials has been emerging: reversible covalent bond‐containing polymers (RCBPs). These materials can be recycled, reprocessed, and reused multiple times without losing their properties. Nonetheless, they have two significant drawbacks when used in 3D printing. First, some require adding new materials every reprinting cycle, and second, others require high temperatures for (re)printing, limiting recyclability and increasing energy consumption. This study, thus, introduces fully recyclable RCBPs as a sustainable approach for radiation‐based printing technologies. This approach enables multiple (re)printing cycles at low temperatures (50 °C lower than the lowest reported) without adding new materials. It involves purposefully synthesized polymers that undergo reversible photopolymerization, composed of a tin‐based catalyst. An everyday microwave oven quickly de‐polymerized these polymers, obtaining complete reversibility. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved
