Abstract:The purpose of this study was twofold: first, to explore Taiwan EFL college learners' motivation for synchronous learning, and second, to differences between gender groups in their synchronous learning motivation during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 96 undergraduate learners from northern Taiwan took part in the study. All the participants were required to participate in 4 different types of online activities: synchronous learning, online discussion, group oral presentation, and submission of e-assignments. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected, including a motivation questionnaire and learners' essay writing. According to the findings, their overall motivation was positive. Nevertheless, male learners had significantly less confidence in their online performance and less acceptance of this kind of interaction. This study highlights not only the crucial role of motivation in synchronous learning acceptance and engagement but also the importance of gender differences, self-regulation, social interaction, and self-efficacy for effective online learning.

Abstract:In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, study abroad (SA) programs have undergone an urgent transfer to the online format. Although SA online has many merits toward sustainable international education in the post-COVID era, assuring the quality of these programs and sustaining students' learning motivation have been key issues of concern. Moreover, there is still a lack of evidence derived from in-depth qualitative inquiries. To address these gaps, this study takes a close look at an individual's story using a narrative approach to data analysis and employs an ecological perspective focusing on intentionality as the theoretical framework for exploring how the participant conquered the challenges when they transitioned to SA online. Successful plots identified include setting up the online learning environment, optimising the benefits of online learning, and sustaining students' motivation to study. Several obstacles remained unsolved, such as the loss of interpersonal connection and empathy in online communication. This study concludes that the participant's successful and unsuccessful encounters in enacting the affordances of online education were manifested by developed or undeveloped intentional actions as a result of individual-environment mutuality. Some implications are offered for constructing sustainable online SA environments that can diversify and innovate future international education experiences.

Factors influencing Chinese EFL students' online learning anxiety in the post-COVID-19 era

Abstract:Online learning has evolved as an attractive and viable option for education, yet there is a need for further research to investigate the factors contributing to students' online learning anxiety regarding the college English course. Based on Keegan's distance education framework, this study examines the factors impacting online learning anxiety among English as foreign language (EFL) students in the Chinese context during the post-COVID-19 era. Data were collected from 899 EFL students across different regions of China through an online survey. Follow-up interviews with ten students provided additional insights into the association between online English learning and anxiety. The collected data underwent descriptive analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis to examine the relationship between online learning anxiety and the identified factors. The results of our study indicate that many Chinese EFL students experienced different degrees of anxiety, ranging from mild to moderate or severe. Moreover, online learning anxiety among Chinese EFL students was positively predicted by a lack of learning motivation, separation from instructors, separation from peers, and technological challenges, while a lack of two-way communication negatively predicted it. The findings underscore the importance of taking effective measures and offering psychological guidance for Chinese EFL students to alleviate anxiety and facilitate their successful adaptation to the new normal of online learning.
Understanding Digital Identity during the Pandemic: An Investigation of Two Chinese Spanish Teachers

Abstract:During combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, the most widespread change in Spanish as a foreign language instruction is imperative online teaching. It demands that language teachers move all teaching activities to virtual platforms, facilitating the construction of their digital identities. However, there is scarce attention on Spanish teachers’ professional development, given the necessity of understanding the evolvement of their identities across virtual learning platforms. Through the lens of a case study, this research explores the digital identities of Spanish as a foreign language teachers during the school lockdown in 2022. The data includes semi-structured interviews, virtual classroom discourse, lesson plans, and reflective writing. The results show that Spanish teachers formed multiple digital identities, including curriculum innovators, vulnerable actors, involuntary team workers, overseas returnees, and academic researchers. Among them, the first three are core identities, while overseas returnees and academic researchers are peripheral identities. Regardless, they were formed and negotiated under the influence of teachers’ past experiences, the exercise of agency, emotional vulnerability, and social context. In addition, a contradictory belief in teaching was also identified during the formation of Chinese Spanish teachers’ digital identities.

Abstract:Drawing on the control-value theory, this study adopted a qualitative approach to explore the various achievement emotions Chinese EFL learners experienced in an online English learning environment and their antecedents during the COVID-19 pandemic period. Data were collected from six Chinese EFL students through semi-structured interviews and reflective journals supplemented with their class notes. Thematic analysis was performed using the qualitative data management software NVivo 12 plus. Results showed that the students experienced diverse emotions such as enjoyment, relaxation, anxiety, guilt, boredom and helplessness. Apart from the environmental antecedents of teacher and peer factors and individual antecedents of control-value appraisals, four novel antecedents were identified which had influence on emotions experienced in the online learning context, including environmental antecedents of internet connection and workload outside classroom, as well as the individual antecedents of students' self-regulation of learning behavior and learning environment.

Abstract:A combination of analytical calculations and Monte Carlo simulations is used to find the ground-state structures in monodisperse ferrofluid monolayers under the influence of an external magnetic field. We study two different regimes, where (i) the direction of an external field is perpendicular to the monolayer plane and (ii) an external magnetic field is in the plane. In the field perpendicular to the plane we observe a transition from an ideal ferroparticle ring to a hexagonal structure. The analytical value of the critical field strength needed for this transition is obtained and shown for relatively large systems to be independent of the number of particles. For smaller systems the value of the critical field is system-size dependent and grows fast to its asymptotic value with increasing number of particles. In the case where the magnetic field is aligned parallel to the layer plane, the critical field needed to break a ring and to create a new ground-state structure, namely a ferroparticle chain, is much smaller than in the case where a field is applied perpendicularly to the plane. The analytical expression for the asymptotic critical field in case of in-plane field is found to be a decreasing function of the total particle number in a system. We characterize both transitions to be of the first-order-type transition, with magnetic susceptibility diverging near the critical point. Our studies show that the domination of the in-plane correlations of dipoles within the ferroparticle ring results in much lower magnetic in-plane susceptibility in comparison to the one perpendicular to the plane.

Abstract:The Covid-19 pandemic has precipitated a global shift to a 'new normal' of online and hybrid learning, significantly affecting language education. This study investigates the impact of emergency remote teaching on language learners' anxiety, examining their preferences for teaching modes and the reasons behind them. Diverging from prior research conducted in well-established digital environments, this inquiry delves into the improvised and stressful context of emergency remote teaching during a pandemic, shedding light on the unexplored facets of the online learning experience. This study, through a quantitative lens, assesses the experiences of 376 English as a foreign language (EFL) students in China, 65 Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) students in Vietnam, and 44 Chinese as a second language (CSL) students enrolled at universities in mainland China. These groups navigated foreign language learning in their home countries amid pandemic constraints, offering a varied landscape of language learning experiences. Our results indicate that different factors trigger anxiety across different groups, despite a general preference for face-to-face learning, which contrasts with the notion that online learning may offer a more relaxed environment. The findings address critical issues that surfaced during the pandemic and explore implications for language education practices in the post-pandemic context.
Cultural Identity of Chinese Students in a Transnational University in China

Abstract:Previous investigations on the complex process of identity construction in the transnational social field have shown to be relevant worldwide, characterised by increasing globalisation (Valentin, 2014). When compared to other countries, China has been actively participating in the process of transnational education (British Council, 2017). While aspiring to be a powerhouse in higher education provision, there seems to be a tension between such an interest in interenationalising education and the Chinese cultural agenda, with a generational anxiety in relation to the possibility of losing"Chineseness" through a fast-paced process of gaining position in the international educational space (Li et al., 2014). Engaging with these discourses, this study explores how Chinese students construct their cultural identities in a transnational university in China, and which factors such as ethinicity, language and staff, for instance, would impact their perceptions of identity and how. Informed by an analysis of 31 semi-structured interviews of Chinese students, including an arts-based activity, under a critical realist paradigm grounded in Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this study expects to inform relationships between local and international socialisation and local cultural needs and issues for future teaching policies and practices. It also offers a unique look into Chinese students in transnational spaces, where intercultural interactions occur and identities are (re)shaped.

Abstract:The present research studied Chinese and Euro-Canadian students during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on their affect, optimism, well-being, and meaning in life. The results revealed both differences and similarities across cultures. As predicted, Chinese participants reported more positive affect and less negative affect, higher optimism, higher state psychological well-being, and higher meaning presence, compared to Euro-Canadian participants. The findings were replicated after a week’s delay. Analyses on longitudinal data showed that state optimism, state well-being, and meaning presence influenced one another over time. These variables also mediated the cultural differences in one another. These results are consistent with cultural work on naïve dialecticism and non-linear lay theory of change. Results also demonstrate underlying relationships among the constructs that are common to both cultural groups. Broadly, the present research highlights the impact of culture on people’s response to challenging life situations and the mechanisms underlying these cultural differences.

Abstract:Background: The outbreak of COVID-19 has brought about radical changes in social life. The study focuses on a special group, Chinese undergraduate students with left-behind experiences. Specifically, the study addresses how such students feel and grasp the meaning in life and how they adapt to the current social environment after experiencing the impermanence of life. The correlation between the meaning in life and social adjustment in the post-epidemic period is evaluated. Methods: The Meaning in Life Scale and the Social Adjustment Scale were used to test 988 undergraduate students. Multi-factor analysis, correlation, regression, and dominance analysis were performed on the test results. Results: (1) During the epidemic, Chinese undergraduate students generally had low meaning in life scores, including below-average values for life goals, and middle-range scores for social adjustment. (2) Having or not having left-behind experiences had an important influence on the meaning in life and social adjustment of undergraduates: undergraduates with left-behind experiences performed better than those without left-behind experiences in terms of meaning in life, while their social adjustment was weaker than those without left-behind experiences. (3) The zest for life and freedom of life of undergraduates in both groups negatively predicted social adjustment, and zest for life preferentially influenced social adjustment. Zest for life also had a significant effect on life value in the group without left-behind experiences. Zest for life was a priority factor influencing social adjustment. Conclusion: The epidemic and left-behind experiences are important factors influencing the relationship between meaning in life and social adjustment among Chinese undergraduate students.

Abstract:After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, distance teaching brought on unforeseen challenges around the world, including classroom-based assessment practice. However, little attention has been paid to teachers’ assessment practice and their identity as assessor in the new teaching situation. This study examines Chinese K-12 in-service EFL teachers’ assessment practice and their identity as assessor in the pandemic. Three rounds of semi-structured interviews were used to probe six in-service teachers. The findings revealed that three major online assessment practices were implemented in response to the challenges: (1) remaining unaltered in online assessment practice; (2) being proactive in formative assessment; (3) provision of online feedback. Results also showed that there were three types of assessment identity that could be identified, namely, positive negotiator, flexible facilitator and struggling follower. The findings indicated assessment practice and assessment identity reciprocally influenced each other in a new assessment context. Different identities might lead to different assessment practice with varied and mixed emotions attached to it. Moreover, varying identities interacted with each other on medicating their online assessment practice.

Abstract:Foreign students in China may have difficulty adjusting to Chinese culture and may experience mental health problems related to acculturation, interpersonal issues, and social communication within the context of campus life. Therefore, this study attempts to apply a collaborative ethnography approach to explore the adjustment to Chinese culture and mental health issues among foreign students on Chinese campuses during the COVID-19 pandemic. We spent 16 months exploring the feelings and perceptions of 82 foreign international undergraduate students at six Chinese higher education institutions regarding their adjustment to Chinese culture and gathered their suggestions about how to address the mental health issues experienced by foreign learners in China. The results show that international students tend to have a limited understanding of Chinese culture and rely on very few channels for information—in particular, the Internet, teachers’ lectures, and daily life—which can easily result in mental health problems and thoughts of marginalization. In addition, the results showed that international students’ mental health problems are subjectively positively correlated with their own personality, cultural intelligence, and cultural identification ability and objectively related to their cultural distance and all aspects of the educational work of international students. It is suggested that Chinese higher education institutions should strengthen their attention to the mental health of international students in China and promote international students’ cross-cultural adaptation abilities and understanding of Chinese culture.

Abstract:This paper reports on the results of a study of Chinese EFL learners’ foreign language anxiety, personality traits, self-esteem, and their interactive effects on students’ performance in English at the tertiary level. A 94-item survey involving 934 first-year undergraduate non-English majors revealed that: 1) nearly a third of the respondents felt anxious in English class, feared being negatively evaluated, and were apprehensive about both speaking English in class and tests; 2) the majority of the respondents were moderately extroverted, moderately inclined to anxiety and fears, and moderately prone to be influenced by social desirability, but tending to be dependent and tender-minded; 3) the participants generally considered themselves worthy; 4) most of the measured variables exerted a significant effect on one another as well as on the students’ performance in English, with anxiety and self-esteem being the most influential variables. Based on these findings, some implications and suggestions are discussed.

Abstract:This study aims to explore how Chinese overseas doctoral students adjust to a different academic, social and cultural environment, using Giddens’ theoretical framework of self-identity. The findings indicate the participants proactively used various coping strategies in meeting challenges and adapting to new social environments. Continuity and stability of self-identity were achieved either culturally or academically through self-reflexivity, autonomy, creativity, authenticity and reliance on an ontological identity. The results challenge the grand narrative of essentialised ‘problematic Chinese learners’.

Abstract:The sudden global outbreak of COVID-19 in late 2019 has led to thriving online teaching, including the teaching of languages, across the world. As the online teaching of English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) in Chinese universities is facing new challenges, EFL teachers have been positively exploring new solutions. To understand how EFL teachers were coping with the challenges, we set up this research as part of a larger study to examine EFL teachers' cognitions about online teaching in response to the disruption of normal teaching plans. We did so by taking a qualitative approach through analyzing in-depth interviews with three EFL teachers from a Chinese university. Through thematic analysis we found that teachers had clear cognitions about features, advantages, and constraints of online EFL teaching and that they acquired information and communication technology (ICT) literacy through understanding students' learning needs, online teaching practice, and the necessity of integrating traditional classroom teaching methods into online delivery. We conclude this study with a discussion on its pedagogical implications for similar contexts or colleagues facing similar challenges in other parts of the world.

Abstract:The outbreak of COVID-19 has induced an abrupt shift from face-to-face instruction to online delivery mode for academic continuity. This research aims to explore the ecology of the pandemic-induced online English as foreign language (EFL) classrooms in Chinese middle schools and perceptions held by the English teachers, students, and parents. By analyzing data collected from 10, 576 questionnaires and eleven interviews, this study revealed how these participants played their respective parts in online EFL classroom ecology. Also, it was found that teachers’ evaluations of students’ learning performance (learning engagement and outcomes) and teacher-student interactions (in-class interaction, after-class interaction, and teachers’ feedback about homework) and their overall satisfaction of the online EFL classrooms were lower than that of the other two groups. In addition, major concerns of the participants about online EFL teaching and learning were identified, such as students’ vision damage and inadequate self-discipline, lack of face-to-face communication, and unstable Internet connection. Through presenting and discussing the research findings, this study is expected to provide implications and insights for foreign language educators, learners, and parents worldwide in adapting to online classrooms during public crises.

Abstract:Interest in the role of learners’ personality, emotions and the learning environment in foreign language (FL) learning has grown exponentially in the past decade. The introduction of personality psychology in the field of applied linguistics has led to the inclusion of a set of personality dimensions in research designs like resilience and grit, which have been shown to be significant predictors of FL achievement. The abrupt emergence of COVID-19 in 2020 forced universities around the world to move their courses online, which has been named Emergency Remote Teaching. The sudden change in FL learning environment offers a unique opportunity to researchers to investigate whether the relationships between learners’ personality and classroom emotions in traditional ‘in-person’ classes, and the predictors of those emotions, also exist in the new online environments. The present study examined the foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA) of Chinese secondary students at different instruction levels and its links with learner-internal and external factors, namely general grit and the classroom environment (CE) of the online English classes. A total of 1,526 Chinese secondary students completed an online questionnaire. Pearson correlation analyses and regression analyses revealed that general grit and CE predicted FLCA either independently or jointly. The findings are discussed and interpreted in the light of existing research on person-environment interaction. We identify avenues for further research and propose a number of pedagogical implications for optimizing online FL teaching.

Abstract:Language Teaching Research, Ahead of Print. The unprecedented switch to online education during the Covid-19 pandemic has posed many challenges for language teachers, such as conducting authentic language interactions with reduced modalities in virtual classrooms. Language teachers, therefore, have been confronted with identity tensions of how to reposition themselves to adapt to this new teaching space. How teachers experienced and responded to these identity tensions is critically important to the success of online education, yet this issue remains underexplored. To address this gap, our case studies drew on multiple rounds of individual interviews with four university English teachers who taught online during the pandemic. Findings reveal that individual teachers experienced varying degrees of identity tensions on the pedagogical and socio-affective dimensions. To tackle these identity tensions, the teachers took wide-ranging agentic actions in pre-, in-, and/or after-class stages to maintain an identity, adopt a new identity, switch between identities, and/or redefine identities. Findings are discussed in terms of differential identity tensions brought by online teaching to individual teachers, as well as the complex interplay between identity tensions and teacher agency. The study concludes with implications for online language teaching and language teacher development.

Abstract:As part of a larger longitudinal study, this paper examines the development of Chinese students' EFL learning motivation throughout university undergraduate study, in an increasingly globalized local context. The study adopted a social constructivist perspective of language learning and combined research methods; the participants were over 1,000 undergraduates from 5 universities. The quantitative data were collected through a questionnaire (based on Gao et al. 2004) including motivational intensity and motivation types - instrumental, cultural, and situational, implemented annually from university entrance to graduation. The qualitative data consisted of individual and group interviews, student journals, and observations. Integrated data analysis revealed that sustained high-level long-term instrumental motivations coexisted with an increase of L2-oriented cultural motivations and situational motivation, particularly in the first and fourth year. The increased L2-oriented cultural motivations indicated neither "integrativeness" in the sense of becoming a member of the native English speaker community, nor a culturally neutral "global identity." The increase of such L2-oriented cultural motivations was also accompanied by a sustained "social responsibility" motivation oriented to learners' home culture. Such complexities of motivational development call for further investigation in increasingly globalized EFL contexts.

Abstract:Abstract Background Cross-cultural sensitivity is a prerequisite for learning and successful cross-cultural communication, but the research on the differences of cross-cultural sensitivity of Chinese English learners of different majors is still blank. The purpose of this study is to explore the significant correlation between different levels of cross-cultural sensitivity from the perspective of positive educational psychological effect, understand the differences of Chinese English learners in cross-cultural sensitivity, and find the main ways of understanding foreign culture in cross-cultural communication behavior, so as to provide theoretical and practical reference for cross-cultural communication researchers and English teachers. Therefore, based on the perspective of educational emotion regulation, this study discusses the cross-cultural sensitivity of Chinese English learners. Subjects and Methods Based on the cross-cultural sensitivity scale of Chen and starosta, this study conducted a questionnaire survey on the cross-cultural sensitivity of 331 Chinese EFL learners. They were divided into three professional groups: English, science, humanities and social sciences. The scale includes 24 five points scale questions about mental state, which measure the variables that constitute the level of sensitivity between five different cultures. In order to ensure the accuracy of the survey results, the author randomly selected 5 subjects from the three groups for in-depth interviews, and recorded and counted the interview results. SPSS 17.0 statistical software package was used for statistical analysis. At the same time, the anxiety level of foreign language learning was further explored in the study. The study took Kim's anxiety scale as the measurement scale, combined with Pearson correlation, standard deviation and statistical significance to illustrate the correlation. T-test of independent samples was used to verify the difference between high anxiety group and low anxiety group. It can be seen from the above table that there is a very significant positive correlation among state anxiety, trait anxiety and foreign language learning anxiety. It can be seen that the “anxiety” component of learners' personality characteristics plays a great role in the generation of foreign language learning anxiety. This finding is consistent with our experience and common sense, as well as the results of similar studies. For example, the test conducted by Wang caikang among college students in Guangzhou shows that the correlation coefficient between FLCAS and trait anxiety is 0.408, while the correlation coefficient with state anxiety is 0.395. Both reached a significant level (P < 0.01). Results The study shows that among the five factors of cross-cultural sensitivity, Chinese English learners have the highest respect for cultural differences, followed by interactive enjoyment, interactive attention and interactive self-confidence. The degree of interactive participation is much lower than the other four factors. Pearson's correlation analysis shows that there is a significant correlation between multiple factors of cross-cultural sensitivity, in which the degree of interactive attention and interactive participation are completely linear. Partial correlation analysis shows that there is a strong correlation between respect for cultural differences and interactive enjoyment. In addition, Chinese English learners are usually exposed to foreign cultures in a variety of ways. In terms of anxiety level, there are significant differences in the relationship between foreign language anxiety, self-efficacy and academic achievement of students of different majors and genders. It is found that compared with male college students, female college students' foreign language achievement and self-efficacy level are much higher. However, there is no significant difference in anxiety level between male and female college students. Conclusion This study shows that case-based cross-cultural teaching has a significant emotional impact on Chinese English learners' cross-cultural sensitivity and cross-cultural communicative competence. Critical cultural awareness is the key to improve Chinese English learning achievement and establish a healthy attitude for future life. Due to the limitations of the research object, the research scope and quantity need to be further studied. In addition, in the design of language teaching methods and syllabus, we must change the paradigm from the traditional perspective of cross-cultural sensitivity.
