Abstract:Urban mountain parks are different from urban parks in that they form a unique microclimate environment with special topographical advantages and natural ecological environment. The study aims to investigate the thermal comfort condition and its related visitations in urban mountain parks in the hot summer and cold winter climate. Particularly, the research conducted thermal comfort measurement and visitation observation in three urban mountain parks in Mianyang City. The measurement and observation covered three months: August, October and December of 2018, which represents summer, autumn and winter respectively. The study included climate measurement, questionnaire survey and observation of the attendance rate in the selected parks. Results showed that temperature and solar radiation are the two most important factors affecting the use of parks. The neutral PET (Physiologically Equivalent Temperature) value is 27.0 degrees C in summer, 23.2 degrees C in autumn, and 17.3 degrees C in winter. This study can help to better plan and design outdoor environments of urban mountain parks to encourage people's visits and social interaction.

Abstract:Urban parks play an important role in alleviating the negative impacts of global climate change and benefit urban thermal resilience. A well-designed thermal environment in urban parks contributes to people's health and attracts more individuals to engage in outdoor activities. However, the application of thermal comfort evaluation methods to urban parks and the effect of influencing factors on thermal comfort have not been deeply explored. This study aims to provide a comprehensive review of the evaluation and influencing factors of thermal comfort in urban parks. A total of 72 relevant articles were selected through screening. The results indicate that PET (Physiological Equivalent Temperature) and UTCI (Universal Thermal Climate Index) are commonly used for evaluating thermal comfort in urban parks. However, the reference ranges used by PET and UTCI do not quite match the actual neutral temperature ranges well. The combination of different landscape factors such as trees, water bodies, and grass can provide varying impacts on thermal comfort. Compared to winter, most people are more sensitive to temperature changes, and the neutral ranges of PET and UTCI are relatively narrow in summer. Moreover, people often adopt related adaptive behaviors (such as increasing activity intensity, moving away from sunny or warm areas, and drinking water) to alleviate thermal discomfort. This literature review emphasizes the calibrations of PET and UTCI reference ranges considering the landscapes, climate, and personal characteristics of urban parks. It provides insights for the evaluation, design, and service, aiming to develop the full potential of thermal comfort in urban parks.

Study on the Spatial and Temporal Distribution of Thermal Comfort and Its Influencing Factors in Urban Parks

Abstract:In order to better understand the thermal comfort of urban parks and provide empirical reference for urban green space optimization design, 5 days' field monitoring was conducted in People's Park in Urumqi, an oasis city in an arid region of China. Combined with GIS spatial interpolation, correlation analysis, and regression analysis, the spatial and temporal distribution of thermal comfort (HI and WBGT) of urban parks was discussed. The results showed the following. (1) The thermal comfort in the morning was generally higher than that in the afternoon, and the thermal comfort near the water body and lush vegetation in the park was higher, while the thermal comfort on the road was lower, especially on Hotan Street and Binhenan Road, which were far away from the park. Therefore, it is recommended that nearby residents exercise outdoors in the morning as much as possible and in the park, and in the afternoon, keep to the park and its vicinity and try to sit quietly or walk slowly, avoiding the less comfortable areas, such as Hotan Road and Binhenan Road. (2) Due to dense vegetation and lack of infrastructure construction, the thermal comfort area does not have the conditions for crowd gathering. Therefore, it is recommended that the park improve the infrastructure of relevant areas. (3) Through the analysis of the significant influence of explanatory variables on the explained variables, it shows that the ventilation effect in the park is insufficient. Therefore, it is recommended to appropriately increase the number of trees, water bodies, and wind channels to promote ventilation in the park so as to improve the thermal comfort of the park. These findings provide a theoretical basis and technical reference for optimizing the thermal comfort of urban green space and establishing a healthier and more comfortable living environment for urban residents.

Abstract:Global warming and rapid urbanization have exacerbated the urban heat island effect. Urban parks contribute to alleviating such an effect and achieving the “carbon emission peak before 2030” and “carbon neutrality before 2060” goals of China. Their popularity is considerably influenced by human thermal comfort. However, limited thermal comfort studies have been conducted in the hot-summer and cold-winter region of China. This study examines human thermal comfort in different landscapes of an urban park in Chengdu and determines the thermal benchmarks. A machine learning (random forest) analysis shows that human thermal sensation is affected by different meteorological factors in different seasons. In addition, the influences of landscape space on human thermal comfort have considerable differences in different seasons. Residents prefer strong solar radiation in winter but fast wind speed in summer. UTCI (universal thermal climate index) is better than PET (physiological equivalent temperature) for outdoor thermal comfort assessment in the study area. This study serves as a valuable baseline and technical reference, contributing to sustainable urban park design.

Abstract:Urban parks are an important component of urban public green space and a public place where a large number of urban residents choose to conduct outdoor activities. An important factor attracting people to visit and stay in urban parks is its outdoor thermal comfort, which is also an important criterion for evaluating the liability of the urban environment. In this study, through field meteorological monitoring and a questionnaire survey, outdoor thermal comfort of different types of landscape space in urban parks in Chengdu, China was studied in winter and summer. Result indicated that (1) different types of landscape spaces have different thermal comforts, (2) air temperature is the most important factor affecting outdoor thermal comfort; (3) because the thermal sensation judgment of outdoor thermal comfort research in Chengdu area, an ASHRAE seven-sites scale can be used; (4) the neutral temperature ranges of Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) and Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) in Chengdu in winter and summer were obtained through research; (5) and UTCI is the best index for evaluating outdoor thermal comfort in Chengdu. These findings provide theoretical benchmarks and technical references for urban planners and landscape designers to optimize outdoor thermal comfort in urban areas to establish a more comfortable and healthy living environment for urban residents.

Abstract:A pleasant outdoor thermal environment could substantially enrich residents' enjoyment for outdoor activities. However, previous studies on outdoor thermal comfort in humid subtropical regions have given limited attention to urban parks. This study aimed to explore the relationship between outdoor thermal comfort and spatial behaviors in urban parks located in humid subtropical regions. Physical measurements, questionnaire surveys, and behavioral observations were conducted to establish the thermal benchmarks in Xiamen, China, including neutral Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET), neutral PET range, comfortable PET, and thermal acceptability range. The thermal discomfort factors and preferences for thermal environmental parameters were also identified. The results showed that the neutral PET in Xiamen's urban parks was 19.3 °C in spring and 24.7 °C in summer. In spring, the neutral PET range was found to be between 17.3 and 21.2 °C, whereas in summer, it expanded to 20.9 and 28.4 °C. Comfortable PET was 19.4 °C in spring, but no specific value was determined during the summer testing. In summer, the 90% thermal acceptability range of the residents was below 32.8 °C. Residents were observed to adapt to outdoor thermal conditions by adjusting their activities, such as the change in outdoor time, location, activity level, and clothing. To improve outdoor thermal comfort, it is important to consider the period of thermal discomfort and implement cooling shading measures during the summer, such as mist-spraying facilities or removable sunshade devices. This quantitative assessment of outdoor thermal comfort in urban parks could offer valuable insights for designing urban parks in humid subtropical regions.

Abstract:As an integral part of urban forests, urban parks play a vital role in mitigating urban heat islands (UHI) and providing residents with comfortable outdoor recreational plots. For high-quality use of the trees in regulating the thermal comfort of urban parks, previous studies primarily focused on the microclimate variations caused by tree coverage and morphological features separately. However, there is still a lack of systematic understanding of how tree canopy coverage (TCC) and its morphological elements, including leaf area index (LAI), trunk height (TH), and crown diameter (CD), combined affect the thermal comfort in the urban park. This study employed an orthogonal experiment design and ENVI-met software to simulate the microclimate of various multi-factor combination models in the case of a typical urban park in a temperate continental climate zone in China, analyzing the simulated result through physiological equivalent temperature (PET). Results show that the contribution ratio of various elements to the thermal environment vary over time. In studied elements, the contribution ratio of TCC to PET is consistently higher than 50% during the morning, midday, and evening periods, reaching a peak of 67% in the evening. The maximum contribution ratios for CD, TH, and LAI occur during midday, morning, and midday, respectively, with corresponding contribution ratios of approximately 22%, 10%, and 9%, respectively. The ranking of elements affecting thermal comfort in the urban park generally is TCC, CD, LAI, TH throughout the day, apart from the morning, when the influence of TH is greater than LAI. The optimal combination of elements is 85% TCC, 4m TH, 3.9 LAI, and 7m CD, and thirteen combinations of element cases meet the thermal comfort requirements during summer. The research findings highlight the significance of optimizing the configuration of trees in creating a more comfortable and inviting space for human activities.

Abstract:To investigate the impact of landscape characteristics on microclimate and thermal comfort in summer urban parks in Xinjiang, we focused on Mingzhu Park in Shihezi City. We collected microclimatic data through field measurements and analyzed the correlations among these factors, the physiological equivalent temperature (PET), and the landscape features. ENVI-met was utilized for microclimate simulations to assess the optimization effects. The results revealed that different landscape features significantly influenced the microclimate and thermal comfort. Trees and grass effectively lowered the temperature, increased humidity, reduced wind speeds, blocked solar radiation, and decreased the PET. Water bodies exposed to sunlight and without shade have a low reflectivity, leading to significant temperature increases. While evaporation can lower the surrounding temperatures, the water surface temperature remains higher than in shaded areas, raising temperatures there. The temperature, humidity, wind speed, and mean radiant temperature show significant correlations. The correlation ranking is as follows: mean radiant temperature (Tmrt) > air temperature (Ta) > relative humidity (RH) > wind speed (Va). After increasing the tree cover and designing dispersed water bodies, the average PET decreased by up to 0.67 °C, with the park experiencing the largest reduction of 1.86 °C. The PET in the eastern built-up area was reduced by 0.35 °C, and in the western built-up area, by only 0.13 °C.

Overheating in the Tree Shade of Urban Parks: A Field Study of Thermal Adaption in China

Abstract:With increased atmospheric temperature, temperatures in the shade of trees in parks also increase, and people are faced with high temperature challenges. In this study, thermal comfort in the shade of the trees of an urban park during summer in China was assessed. The subjective responses of the respondents were recorded via questionnaires, and environment parameters were measured. The results show that the air temperature in the shade was 31.1 ± 3.0 °C during the day, and that it peaked at 36.9 °C; the globe temperature was 31.3 ± 3.1 °C, and it peaked at 40.1 °C. Respondents' clothing insulation was 0.31 ± 0.08 clo, and the effect of clothing adjustment on thermal adaptation was limited. Thermal sensation is linearly related to standard effective temperature (SET), and the upper limit of 80% acceptable SET was 32.1 °C. At different temperature values, the proportion of expected airflow enhancement exceeded 50%. The respondents preferred a neutral-warm sensation. Moreover, there was an obvious thermal adaptation, with thermal history and psychological adaptation being the main factors affecting thermal comfort. This study confirmed the value of shade and provided us with guidance for park planning and design.

Abstract:Urban land use and anthropogenic heat (AH) emission can considerably influence the human thermal comfort during extreme heat events. In this study, a spatially heterogeneous AH emission data and updated urban land use data are integrated into the Weather Research and Forecasting model to simulate the physical processes of urban warming during summer. Simulations conducted in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) of east China suggest that the mean urban heat island intensity reaches 1.49 °C in urbanized areas during summer, with AH emission making a considerable contribution. The warming effect due to urban land use is intensified during extremely hot days, but in contrast, the AH effects are slightly reduced. Urban development increases the total thermal discomfort hours by 27% in the urban areas of YRD, with AH and urban land use contributing nearly equal amount. By limiting the daytime latent heat release, urban land use reduces the daily maximum heat stress particularly during extremely hot days; however, such alleviations can be offset by the AH emission. Strategies for mitigation of urban heat island effect and heat stress in cities should therefore include measures to reduce AH emission.
Impacts of the Microclimate of a Large Urban Park on Its Surrounding Built Environment in the Summertime

Abstract:The cooling effect of green spaces as an ecological solution to mitigate urban climate change is well documented. However, the factors influencing the microclimate in the built environment around forest parks, diurnal variations of their impact and their degree of importance have not been explicitly addressed. We attempted to quantify how much various landscape parameters, including land cover and spatial location, impact the ambient air and surface temperature in the area around Beijing’s Olympic Forest Park. Data were taken along strategically located traverses inside and outside the park. We found: (1) The air temperature during the day was 1.0–3.5 °C lower in the park than in the surrounding area; the surface temperature was 1.7–4.8 °C lower; air humidity in the park increased by 8.7–15.1%; and the human comfort index reduced to 1.8–6.9, all generating a more comfortable thermal environment in the park than in the surrounding area. (2) The distance to the park and the green space ratio of the park’s surrounding area are significant factors for regulating its microclimate. A 1 km increase in distance to the park caused the temperature to increase by 0.83 °C; when the green space ratio increased by 10%, the temperature dropped by 0.16 °C on average. The impact of these two parameters was more obvious in the afternoon than in the middle of the day or in the morning. The green space ratio could be used for designing a more stable thermal environment. (3) Land cover affects surface temperature more than it does air temperature. Our data suggest that an urban plan with an even distribution of green space would provide the greatest thermal comfort.

Emotional Perceptions of Thermal Comfort for People Exposed to Green Spaces Characterized Using Streetscapes in Urban Parks

Abstract:Thermal comfort is a key determinant ruling the quality of urban park visits that is mainly evaluated by equivalent meteorological factors and lacks evidence about its relationship with emotional perception. Exposure to green space was believed to be an available approach to increase thermal comfort, but this argument still needs verification to confirm its reliability. In this study, about ~15,000 streetscapes were photographed at stops along sidewalks and evaluated for green view index (GVI) and plant diversity index in five urban parks of Changchun, Northeast China. The faces of visitors were captured to analyze happy, sad, and neutral scores as well as two net positive emotion estimates. Meteorological factors of temperature, relative humidity, and wind velocity were measured at the same time for evaluating thermal comfort using equivalent variables of discomfort index (DI), temperature and humidity index (THI), and cooling power index (CP). At stops with higher GVI, lower temperature (slope: from −0.1058 to −0.0871) and wind velocity (slope: from −0.1273 to −0.0524) were found, as well as higher relative humidity (slope: from 0.0871 to 0.8812), which resulted in positive relationships between GVI and thermal comfort evaluated as DI (R2 = 0.3598, p < 0.0001) or CP (R2 = 0.3179, p < 0.0001). Sad score was positively correlated with THI (R2 = 0.0908, p = 0.0332) and negatively correlated with CP (R2 = 0.0929, p = 0.0294). At stops with high GVI, more positive emotions were shown on visitors' faces (happy minus sad scores, 0.31 ± 0.10). Plant diversity had varied relationships with GVI in parks depending on age. Overall, our study demonstrated that using imagery data extracted from streetscapes can be useful for evaluating thermal comfort. It is recommended to plan a large amount of touchable nature provided by vegetation in urban parks so as to mitigate micro-climates towards a trend with more thermal comfort that evokes more positive emotions.

Abstract:The thermal comfort of green spaces, an important factor affecting physical activity, is the premise of outdoor physical exercise. Currently, the way in which thermal comfort influences outdoor physical activities is not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate the effect of thermal comfort in green spaces on the participants' attendance, duration, metabolic rate, and frequency of physical activity during hot summer. We used questionnaire surveys and activity records to evaluate physical activity, and numerical simulations to reproduce the thermal environment in five green spaces in an urban park in Chongqing, China. Thermal comfort was evaluated by physiological equivalent temperature (PET) and thermal sensation vote (TSV). Results showed that: 1) Attendance showed a double peak in shaded spaces, and a single peak in less shaded spaces that offered activity facilities. 2) The hourly average activity duration reached its maximum (37 min) at PET was 30.46 °C. Large areas of tree-shaded squares and pavilions, and fitness trails were more conducive to longer durations of outdoor activity. 3) PET negatively affected the hourly per capita metabolic rate (R2 = 0.9321). Metabolic rate was barely affected by the PET of older adults over the age of 65 years. 4) TSV was inversely proportional to frequency. Well-shaded spaces and spaces that provide activity facilities could increase the activity frequency. These results may serve as a reference for designing improved green spaces that can promote outdoor exercise while safeguarding health.

Abstract:Outdoor open space is important to cities and can provide benefits for healthy urban living. Among the many factors that affect space quality and space use, thermal comfort has drawn increasing attention from both climatologists and planners. Previous studies mostly focus on hot seasons when the primary concern is to avoid solar exposure and mitigate heat stress. In Shanghai, because of the high indoor humidity, people prefer to go outdoors and enjoy more sunshine in autumn and winter. This paper presents a thermal comfort survey in one urban park in Shanghai from November to January to investigate the role thermal comfort plays in affecting people's evaluation of the outdoor space and activity. Meteorological measurements, questionnaire surveys and unobtrusive observations were carried out. Computer simulations were conducted to evaluate the micro-meteorological conditions. The physiological equivalent temperature (PET) was used to evaluate people's objective thermal comfort level based on micro-meteorological conditions. It is found that visitors' overall comfort was largely affected by their subjective thermal sensation vote (TSV). In winter TSV showed the strongest positive relationship with air temperature and solar radiation, which are also the two most important factors that affect visitors' space use. The study reveals that the neutral PET in Shanghai in winter is around 15-29 degrees C. It was also found that duration of stay and length of residence in Shanghai affected visitors' thermal adaptation. This study can provide understandings of people's outdoor thermal comfort in autumn and winter in Shanghai and help promote outdoor space use. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Influence of view factors on intra-urban air temperature and thermal comfort variability in a temperate city

Abstract:Urban geometry is known to be one of the major factors in explaining the intra-urban temperature variations. A commonly used indicator to describe the urban geometry is the sky view factor. However, the existing studies have shown that the relationship between SVF and urban temperature is quite contradictory. This suggests that a single SVF cannot accurately quantify the urban geometry. For comparison, we here propose to use view factors, including sky, building and tree view factors (SVF, BVF, and TVF, respectively), to accurately quantify the three-dimensional urban geometry. Based on microclimate measurements conducted in Beijing Olympic Park and its surrounding urban environment in Beijing, China, the impact of view factors on intra-urban air temperature and thermal comfort was evaluated. Measurements were conducted along a selected path during hot summer days with clear skies and light winds by mobile traverses. The obtained results showed that SVF was positively correlated with air temperature during the day but negatively correlated with air temperature at night. BVF mainly played a warming role in both daytime and nighttime. Especially at night, BVF was the main geometric warming factor. TVF had a significant cooling effect during the day but did not have a negative effect at night due to reduced SVF. There was a strong point-to-point correlation between SVF and outdoor thermal comfort in the daytime. The mean differences in Mean Radiant Temperature and Physiologically Equivalent Temperature between shaded and unshaded sites were 12.0 degrees C and 6.8 degrees C, respectively, which suggested that providing effective shading is extremely important for improving outdoor daytime thermal comfort.

Abstract:The hot and humid feeling of the urban environment enhances residents' discomfort indices. Although the cooling and humidifying effects of plant communities in various urban parks are significant, there is still insufficient evidence for the effects of plant community characteristics on temperature and humidity. In this study, 36 typical plant communities in the Changchun Water Culture and Ecological Park in China were selected in the summer (21–23 August 2020) from 8:00 to 18:00 for three days when it was sunny and windless. We obtained plant community characteristics through field measurements and drone recordings to explore the relationship between plant community characteristics and the mechanism of temperature and humidity. The study observed that (1) the canopy density and three-dimensional green amount were significantly related to the benefits of cooling and humidification. When the canopy density is between 0.7 and 0.8 and the three-dimensional green volume is above 4 m3/m2, the greatest benefit is achieved; (2) the discomfort index is between 0.6 and 0.8, and the three-dimensional green volume is 4 m3/m2–6 m3/m2 minimum; and (3) the changes in temperature and humidity are different for different types of plant communities, which lead to differences in people's perceptions of environmental comfort. The tree–grassland and tree–shrub–grass types had the most apparent improvement effects on comfort. The results show that in the design process of urban park plants, emphasis is placed on plant community configuration with apparent cooling and humidification effects, which can improve the comfort of tourists in hot and humid environments. The research results provide theoretical support for sustainable urban green space development.

Abstract:The comfort level of outdoor thermal environments is affected by several factors. Previous studies of thermal comfort have generally investigated the main microclimatic factors as dependent variables, such as the temperature, wind speed, humidity, and thermal radiation, but the influence of the air quality has rarely been explored. In this study, we acquired meteorological element observations and conducted questionnaire surveys in Peach Blossom Park, Hebei University of Technology, and Xigu Park in Tianjin. We analyzed the effects of the outdoor air quality and thermal environment on the thermal comfort in order to provide a theoretical basis for comprehensive evaluations of the outdoor environment and the mechanism. The results showed that thermal resistance of clothing and ambient temperature followed a negative step change, where people generally reduced the minimum amount of clothing when the temperature exceeded 28 °C. One unit change in the thermal sensation vote (TSV) occurred for every 11 °C rise in the physiological equivalent temperature (PET). The neutral PET was 21.68 °C, and the comfortable PET was about 23 °C. The air quality index (AQI) and air satisfaction were negatively correlated, and satisfaction decreased by 1 unit for every change of 230 AQI. The transitional season was most comfortable when the temperature felt slightly cool (TSV = −0.70). The neutral TSV was 0.507 in the summer and −0.334 in the winter. Air quality had a significant effect on the thermal comfort vote (TCV) (p = 0.0485 < 0.05). The effect of PET on TCV was highly significant (p < 0.01).

Abstract:Climate change and intensification of urban heat island are making the outdoor environment more uncomfortable during hot weather. Improving the outdoor thermal comfort of urban parks is crucial for residents' health due to their significance for daily activities. Taking Hot Spring Park in Fuzhou, China, as an example, based on COMfort FormulA (COMFA) model, this study examined the outdoor thermal comfort and revealed related influencing factors, through questionnaires, field measurement of meteorological and landscape variables. The results show that (1) air temperature and solar radiation are the most important variables affecting outdoor thermal comfort while wind speed and relative humidity are less influential. (2) The results allow extending the neutral thermal comfort range from 50 W/m 2 (value of literature) to 80 W/m 2 in hot summer and warm winter areas. However, people will be unbearable when the value of COMFA model reaches 177 W/m 2 or higher. (3) Increasing the green coverage and canopy density of the park can significantly improve outdoor thermal comfort, and open water surface has almost no positive effect. This study extended the understanding of outdoor thermal comfort in hot summer and warm winter areas and can provide the basis for the design of urban parks and the improvement of outdoor thermal environment.
