Abstract:A chaotic optical communication scheme assisted by artificial intelligence (AI) method is proposed. Different from other traditional solutions, the chaos synchronization of the proposed scheme is accomplished via an AI-based optoelectronic oscillator (AI-OEO) model and a QPSK driving signal distorted by chromatic dispersion. Specifically, the distorted driving signal excites the chaotic AI-OEO model to generate the chaotic signal for encryption and decryption. One significant advantage is that the strict dependence of chaos synchronization on physical devices can be reduced by using deep learning technology to model the actual experimental chaotic system. The proposed scheme has been experimentally validated in a chaotic-encrypted 256 Gbit/s (32-GBaud) polarization-multiplexed 16QAM system over 1600 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF). The results show that the BER performance after 1600 km transmission is lower than the 20% FEC threshold limit (BER = 2.4 × 10−2). Furthermore, we conducted a comprehensive security assessment of the system, comparing it with traditional chaotic encryption schemes and performing a detailed analysis of the key space and key sensitivity. The proposed scheme is compatible with the existing high-speed coherent optical fiber communication systems, and the realization of precise chaos synchronization only requires ensuring that the driving signal is decoded without errors at the receiver. We believe that it has the potential to become a candidate solution for bidirectional high-speed secure communication with low complexity and cost.

Abstract:Chaotic optical communication technology is considered as an effective secure communication technology, which can protect information from a physical layer and is compatible with the existing optical networks. At present, to realize long-distance chaos synchronization is still a very difficult problem, mainly because well-matched hardware cannot always be guaranteed between the transmitter and receiver. In this Letter, we introduce long short-term memory (LSTM) networks to learn a nonlinear dynamics model of an opto-electronic feedback loop, and then apply the trained deep learning model to generate a chaotic waveform for encryption and decryption at the transmitter and receiver. Furthermore, to improve the security, we establish a deep learning model pool which consists of different gain trained models and different delay trained models, and use a digital signal to drive chaos synchronization between the receiver and transmitter. The proposed scheme is experimentally verified in chaotic-encrypted 56-Gbit/s PAM-4 systems, and a decrypted performance below 7%FEC threshold (BER = 3.8×10-3) can be achieved over a 100-km fiber transmission.

Abstract:Chaotic optical communications were originally proposed to provide high-level physical layer security for optical communications. Limited by the difficulty of chaos synchronization, there has been little experimental demonstration of high-speed chaotic optical communications, and point to multipoint chaotic optical networking is hard to implement. Here, we propose a method to overcome the current limitations. By using a deep-learning-based scheme to learn the complex nonlinear model of the chaotic transmitter, wideband chaos synchronization can be realized in the digital domain. Therefore, the chaotic receiver can be significantly simplified while still guaranteeing security. A successful transmission of 32 Gb/s messages hidden in a wideband chaotic optical carrier was experimentally demonstrated over a 20 km fiber link. We believe the proposed deep-learning-based chaos synchronization method will enable a new direction for further development of high-speed chaotic optical communication systems and networks.

Abstract:Data security is essential for applications that require a significant level of data privacy. Online banking and government mailing are good examples of data with security requirements. This paper demonstrates an enhanced secure fiber-optic communication system based on chaos using Optisystem 7.0 software. A 10 Gb/s externally modulated signal is transmitted over 100 km of standard single-mode fiber. The modulated data is hidden by a chaotic optical signal generated by controlling the rate parameters of a semiconductor laser. The results showed that chaos degrades the overall system performance and limits the transmission distance to 70 km. A chirped fiber-Bragg grating and erbium-doped fiber amplifier are introduced to compensate signal dispersion and to increase the transmission distance to 104 km (80% enhancement). Also, the results revealed that maximum Q-factor of 4.2 and a minimum bit error rate of are successfully recovered the data at the receiver.

Abstract:In the current context of information explosion, securing the physical layer in the backbone networks of coherent optical communication is vitally important. In this letter, we experimentally validate a secure communication scheme for coherent optical communication systems based on electro-optic phase feedback encryption, thereby successfully transmitting a 40 Gb/s dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) signal over a distance of 180 km. By strategically incorporating a delay line interferometer and a dispersion component within the electro-optic feedback loop, it is possible to generate random phase scrambling at a moderate modulation depth. With the utilization of commercial hardware, the encryption of DP-QPSK signals can be seamlessly accomplished in a plug-and-play manner, removing the necessity for additional synchronization or key distribution systems. The proposed scheme paves a new way to protect the polarization-multiplexing signals and offers a promising approach for secure coherent optical communication system.

Abstract:Security key is necessary for data encryption while transmitting amounts of confidential information. For existing strategies of key distribution, it is the primary challenge that the rate and distance limit, insufficient security, and difficulty of deployment. To solve these problems, we propose an accelerated key distribution method for endogenously secure optical communication by synchronized chaotic system based on BER feature of fiber channel. First, synchronized chaotic equation systems are innovatively realized by identical hardware equipment, chaotic equation, initial value, and micro interference. Then, the synchronization keeping with micro interference of proposed chaotic systems are obtained based on identical BER feature of fiber loop. Innovatively, all synchronous operation controls to proposed chaotic systems are guaranteed by deterministic rule of algorithm operation, and are not limited by amplifier or fiber length. Experimental result demonstrates that proposed chaotic systems are synchronized under long term operation. The key distribution rate (KDR) can reach a rate of 100Gbit/s at 100% key consistency rate. And, the KDR can be augmented by extending hardware resources of key distribution. Simulation is conducted to illustrate the security of chaotic systems by the bifurcation diagram, scatter plot diagram, and initial value sensitive phenomenon. NIST security test suite demonstrates that generated secret key sequences pass the test. Moreover, possible attacks are analysed for the security robustness of proposed scheme. The results illustrate proposed system is a reliable, secure and cost-effective solution for highspeed and long-haul key distribution.

Abstract:A novel long-distance multi-channel bidirectional chaos communication system over multiple paths based on two synchronized 1550nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) is proposed and studied theoretically. These two responding VCSELs (R-VCSELs) can output similar chaotic signals served as chaotic carrier in two linear polarization (LP) modes with identical signal injection from a driving VCSEL (D-VCSEL), which is subject to optical feedback and optical injection, simultaneously. Through the numerical simulations, high quality chaos synchronization between the two R-VCSELs can be obtained. Besides, the effects of varied qualities of chaos synchronization on communication performances in 20km single mode fiber (SMF) channels are investigated by regulating different internal parameters mismatch after adopting chaos masking (CMS) technique. With the decrease of the maximum cross correlation coefficient (Max-C) between the two R-VCSELs, the bit error rate (BER) of decoded message increase. Meanwhile, the BER can still be less than 10−9 when the Max-C degrades to 0.982. Based on high quality synchronization, when the dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) links are introduced, 4n messages of 10Gbit/s can transmit in 180km SMF channels over n coupling paths, bidirectionally and simultaneously. Thorough tests are carried out with detailed analysis, demonstrating long-distance, multi-channel, bidirectional chaos communication based on VCSELs with chaotic signal injection.

Abstract:Protecting confidential high speed optical signal transmission at the lowest physical layer is a critical challenge for modern fiber-optic communication systems. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a novel synchronous privacy enhanced chaotic temporal phase en/decryption scheme for high-speed physical layer secure optical communication. A remote chaos synchronization architecture relying on common source signal driving and private response hardware modules comprising of dispersive components and slave lasers is employed to generate synchronized private chaotic en/decryption signals, and simultaneously suppress residual driving-response correlation for enhancing the security. A proof-of-principle demonstration by secure transmission of a 28 Gb/s on-off-keying modulated confidential signal over 100 km single mode fiber link based on the private chaotic temporal phase en/decryption scheme is successfully achieved. The demonstrated hardware optical en/decryption approach may provide a promising way towards future ultra-high speed physical layer secure optical communication systems.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a chaotic synchronization scheme based on the electro-optic hybrid entropy sources. The chaos synchronization method is experimentally validated that 200 km high-level chaos synchronization can be attained and the distance can be further extended. The digital signal induced chaos synchronization signal has good robustness against the potential distortions in long-haul optical transmission. On the basis of the digital signal induced chaos synchronization strategy, a correlated random bit generation (CRBG) scheme with bit rate of 1.25 Gb/s and distance of 200 km is proposed. The generated correlated random bit sequences (CRBSs) pass all the NIST tests. Meanwhile, a data encryption scheme based on the robust chaos synchronization method is proposed with low computation complexity. The synchronization signal, in which the encrypted data is embedded, maintains the strength in long-haul transmission. The strong robustness of the scheme under parameter mismatch is numerically analyzed. These propositions show great potential in the field of secure communication, especially the long-haul scenario.

Abstract:In this paper, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, a high bit rate of 40 Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing based on a secure free space optical communication system by utilizing an optical chaos. The optical chaos was designed and investigated via OptiSystem-7.0 software. The signal message was hidden by applying the optical chaos masking scheme. According to the obtained results, the optical chaos that causes a more significant deterioration in the link distance in the case of a good weather more than that in a bad weather. The link was degraded from 2-to-1.3 km and from 0.8-to-0.6 km at little fog and at haze, respectively. In addition, the proposed system possessed a communication merit (bitrate product repeater distance) about 52 Gb/s km that belonged to a little fog weather as well as 24 Gb/s km for the case of haze. This is considered as the highest communication merit as compared with the previous works and investigations.

Abstract:An optical phase chaos and mutual injection chaos synchronization scheme based on second order differential feedback electro-optical loop is proposed for chaotic communication. The filtered chaotic waves for mutual injection synchronization and multi-channel signals are transmitted through wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to realize large-capacity confidential communication. The results show that the bandwidth of the optical chaos is 41.38 GHz, the normalized permutation entropy is 0.999, and the chaos has the performance of time delay suppressing (TDS). This scheme achieves up to 7-channel 25 GBaud 16QAM with the multi-modulus algorithm (MMA) algorithm at OSNR of 25 dB after 100 km transmission. The bit-rate distance of 280,000 Gb/s km is successfully realized by 500 km transmission of 4-channel 35 GBaud 16QAM signals at 25 dB OSNR. The analysis proves that the performance of the second order digital differential electro-optical phase feedback (2nd order DEOP) chaos is better than that of the 1st order DEOP chaos and 3rd order DEOP chaos. The 2nd order DEOP chaos can be generated at a smaller feedback coefficient, the bandwidth of radio frequency chaos is wider, and the TDS suppression is better. This scheme realizes high-speed and large-capacity secure optical chaos communication, which can be widely used in WDM networks and has practical feasibility and application value.

Abstract:The free-space optical communication of high-speed 120 Gbit/s wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) QPSK signals is demonstrated in an outdoor atmospheric channel with a distance of about 1 km. A pair of optical terminal systems with the capture and tracking functions is used to establish the atmospheric channel. The power fluctuation through the atmospheric turbulence agrees well with the exponentiated Weibull distribution. At the BER of 3.8 x 10(-3), the required receiving powers for the three WDM channels are similar, which are all <-15.4 dBm.

Abstract:Advanced multi-level modulation formats have shown their great potential in high-speed and high-spectral-efficiency optical communications. Using quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation format for free-space optical (FSO) communication, a bidirectional high-speed FSO transmission link with the bit rates of up to 40 Gbit/s over ∼1 km, between two buildings in the campus of Changchun University of Science and Technology, Changchun, China, is experimentally demonstrated cooperating by capture and tracking systems. The eye-diagrams and constellation diagrams of the transmitted QPSK signals are clearly observed. By comparing the bit error rate (BER) curves before and after transmission, one can find that the receiving powers are both less than −16.5 dBm for the forward and backward transmissions of the bidirectional 20, 30, and 40 Gbit/s FSO links, and their power penalties due to the phase fluctuation of the atmospheric channel are both less than 2.6 dB, at the BER of 3.8×10−3.

Abstract:In this paper, a low-complexity two-level chaotic encryption scheme is introduced and experimentally demonstrated to improve the physical layer security of a 450-nm laser underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) system using discrete Fourier transform spread discrete multi-tone (DFT-S DMT) modulation. In the first encryption stage, the original bit stream is encrypted with a chaotic sequence based on a one-dimensional Logistic map. In the second encryption stage, the real and imaginary components of the DFT-S symbols are further encrypted with a pair of separate chaotic sequences, which are generated from a two-dimensional Logistic iterative chaotic map with infinite collapse (2D-LICM). The experimental results indicate that the encryption operation has no negative effect on the performance of the proposed UOWC system. For chaotic encryption, the DFT-S DMT gives a better performance than the DMT scheme under different water turbidities. 55-m/4.5-Gbps and 50-m/5-Gbps underwater transmissions are successfully demonstrated by the chaotic encrypted DFT-S DMT scheme. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to verify the feasibility of chaotic encryption in a high-speed UOWC system.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel hybrid chaos-based three-dimensional (3-D) constellation scrambling scheme to simultaneously improve the physical layer security and transmission performance of the coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) system. A 3-D regular hexahedron signal constellation is constructed by the constellation figure of merit principle, which not only expands the encryption dimension but improves the error performance. The dynamic parameters for constellation scrambling are generated by the 5-D hybrid chaotic scheme based on the combination of a 3-D hyperchaotic Hnon mapping and two independent 1-D Logistic mappings, as such a key space of 10133 is introduced to enhance the security level of OFDM data encryption during transmission. Furthermore, a transmission experiment for encryption of 144 Gbps 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation OFDM data over a 100 km standard single-mode fiber in a CO-OFDM system is demonstrated. Compared with the case of using the 3-D rectangular constellation, a 2 dB bit error rate performance improvement is achieved. The results show that the proposed scheme could effectively enhance the system security and transmission performance, which suggests a scalable strategy for future physically secured CO-OFDM systems.

Abstract:This research work proposed and experimentally demonstrated beyond-100GBd probabilistically shaped coherent optics that support the transmission of a ∼1.2 Tbps coded line rate and a ∼0.9 Tbps net bit rate per optical carrier over metro-regional distances. Pursuing next-generation transmission systems having both high capacity approaching terabits per wavelength and high spectral efficiency require engineering efforts from different aspects, which may include the enhancement of analog-to-digital or digital-to-analog interfaces, the improvement of channel characteristics, and also the realization of better receiver sensitivities, preferably through DSP techniques such as probabilistic shaping (PS). By doing so, this work achieved a single-channel and a 112.5-GHz WDM transmission of 900G wavelengths over 800 and 400 km, respectively, which employed a PS DP-64QAM modulation format at 105 GBd, yielding a net spectral efficiency of 8.05 bits/s/Hz. Such a high symbol rate was demonstrated using a commercially available DAC unit without band-interleaving. The enhanced optical channel consists of ITU-T G.654 compliant Terawave SLA+ fiber spans with the backward-pumped Raman amplifiers. In addition, with the same PS DP-64QAM modulation format and the same enhanced channel, this research work also demonstrated that 400G wavelengths can be delivered over 2800 km supporting long-haul applications.
Realization of Quantum Secure Direct Communication over 100 Km Fiber with Time-Bin and Phase Quantum States

Abstract:Rapid progress has been made in quantum secure direct communication in recent years. For practical application, it is important to improve the performances, such as the secure information rate and the communication distance. In this paper, we report an elaborate physical system design and protocol with much enhanced performance. This design increased the secrecy capacity greatly by achieving an ultra-low quantum bit error rate of <0.1%, one order of magnitude smaller than that of existing systems. Compared to previous systems, the proposed scheme uses photonic time-bin and phase states, operating at 50 MHz of repetition rate, which can be easily upgraded to over 1 GHz using current on-the-shelf technology. The results of our experimentation demonstrate that the proposed system can tolerate more channel loss, from 5.1 dB, which is about 28.3 km in fiber in the previous scheme, to 18.4 dB, which corresponds to fiber length of 102.2 km. Thus, the experiment shows that intercity quantum secure direct communication through fiber is feasible with present-day technology.

Abstract:High-speed physical key distribution is diligently pursued for secure communication. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme of high-speed key distribution using mode-shift keying chaos synchronization between two multi-longitudinal-mode Fabry-Perot lasers commonly driven by a super-luminescent diode. Legitimate users dynamically select one of the longitudinal modes according to private control codes to achieve mode-shift keying chaos synchronization. The two remote chaotic light waveforms are quantized to generate two raw random bit streams, and then those bits corresponding to chaos synchronization are sifted as shared keys by comparing the control codes. In this method, the transition time, i.e., the chaos synchronization recovery time is determined by the rising time of the control codes rather than the laser transition response time, so the key distribution rate is improved greatly. Our experiment achieved 0.75-Gbit/s key distribution rate with a bit error rate of 3.8*10-3 over 160-km fiber transmission with dispersion compensation. The entropy rate of the laser chaos is evaluated as 16 Gbit/s, which determines the ultimate final key rate together with key generation ratio. It is therefore believed that the method pays a way for Gbit/s physical key distribution.

Abstract:The physical layer chaotic encryption of optical communication is considered as an effective secure communication technology, which can protect data and be compatible with existing networks. Theoretically, any chaotic system or chaotic map has ideal complex dynamics. However, due to the limited precision of simulation software and digital equipment, the chaotic system often degrades dynamics, which hinders the further application of digital chaotic system in many fields. In this paper, we propose a self-propagated nonlinear chaotic dynamical enhanced optical physical layer encryption scheme based on bidirectional long short-term memory neural network (Bi-LSTM-NN). The Bi-LSTM-NN is used to train and learn the dynamical enhanced chaotic sequences with different initial values iteratively, and finally the chaotic sequences with self-propagated dynamical enhancement are output. The correlation coefficient (CC) of chaotic sequences by the enhanced chaotic system and Bi-LSTM-NN are more than 0.98. Compared with the original chaotic system, the range of sample entropy above 0.8 is more than 2 times, and the sensitivity of the initial value x0 is up to 2.28 times, and y0 is up to 1.3 times, making the key space reaches 10520. The scheme successfully encrypts constellation points and information in the frequency domain. In addition, the scheme achieves encrypted 16 quadrature amplitude modulation-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (16QAM-OFDM) signal transmission of 65.9 Gb/s using 2 km 7-core optical fiber. The experimental results show that the scheme can ensure data security, and in the future optical network has a good application prospect.
