Abstract:Social participation can be defined as involvement in activities that provide a platform to interact with society and others. Untreated hearing loss effects communication skills, academic achievements, and peer-group interaction. Since a typical body structure and body functioning are essential to demonstrate day to day activities. Altogether these factors can influence the social participation in children with HL. The aim of this study is to systematically review the impact of hearing loss on social participation in children.A literature search was carried out to obtain studies exploring social participation among children with HL. Two authors independently searched four electronic databases, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science. The search strategy was designed by using six main terms 'social participation', 'social engagement', 'social interaction', 'hearing loss', 'hearing impairment', 'hearing disorder', and Boolean operators 'AND', 'OR' were used to make the search strings. The current review included four studies after meeting the eligibility criteria. Findings showed that social participation is affected in children with HL. Reduced hearing ability is one of the factors of reduced social participation in children. Children using hearing aids or cochlear implants, participate more frequently in social activities. The findings of this review suggest that HL is associated with reduced social participation. However, using hearing aids and cochlear implants followed by auditory verbal therapy has significant improvement in social participation. Future studies need to investigate whether early rehabilitation can increase social participation in children.

Abstract:Hearing loss severely hampers verbal exchange and thus social interaction, which puts a high burden on hearing-impaired and their close partners. Until now, nonverbal interaction in hearing-impaired dyads has not been addressed as a relevant factor for well-being or quality of social relationships. Nonverbal synchrony of head- and body-movement was analysed in N = 30 dyads of persons with hearing impairment (PHI) and their significant others (SO). In a 10-minute conversation before (T1) and 6 months after cochlear implantation (T2), Motion Energy Analysis (MEA) automatically quantified head- and body-movement. Self-report measures of both dyad members were used to assess aspects of quality of life and closeness in the partnership. After cochlear implantation, nonverbal synchrony showed a downward trend and was less distinct from pseudosynchrony. Higher synchrony was associated with worse hearing-related quality of life, shorter duration of hearing impairment and less closeness in the relationship. This negative association was interpreted as an indication for the effort one has to make to cope with difficulties in a dyad`s relationship. Endorsing a holistic approach in auditory rehabilitation, we propose the assessment of nonverbal synchrony as a suitable tool to detect subtle imbalances in the interpersonal relation between PHI and SO outside conscious control and to provide cues for possible therapeutical strategies.

Abstract:Many older adults live with some form of hearing loss and have difficulty understanding speech in the presence of background sound. Experiences resulting from such difficulties include increased listening effort and fatigue. Social interactions may become less appealing in the context of such experiences, and age-related hearing loss is associated with an increased risk of social isolation and associated negative psychosocial health outcomes. However, the precise relationship between age-related hearing loss and social isolation is not well described. Here, we review the literature and synthesize existing work from different domains to propose a framework with three conceptual anchor stages to describe the relation between hearing loss and social isolation: within-situation disengagement from listening, social withdrawal, and social isolation. We describe the distinct characteristics of each stage and suggest potential interventions to mitigate negative impacts of hearing loss on social lives and health. We close by outlining potential implications for researchers and clinicians.

Abstract:Objective Social isolation and loneliness are associated with increased mortality and higher health care spending in older adults. Hearing loss is a common condition in older adults and impairs communication and social interactions. The objective of this review is to summarize the current state of the literature exploring the association between hearing loss and social isolation and/or loneliness. Data Sources PubMed, Embase, CINAHL Plus, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Library. Review Methods Articles were screened for inclusion by 2 independent reviewers, with a third reviewer for adjudication. English-language studies of older adults with hearing loss that used a validated measure of social isolation or loneliness were included. A modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess the quality of the studies included in the review. Results Of the 2495 identified studies, 14 were included in the review. Most of the studies (12/14) were cross-sectional. Despite the heterogeneity of assessment methods for hearing status (self-report or objective audiometry), loneliness, and social isolation, most multivariable-adjusted studies found that hearing loss was associated with higher risk of loneliness and social isolation. Several studies found an effect modification of gender such that among women, hearing loss was more strongly associated with loneliness and social isolation than among men. Conclusions Our findings that hearing loss is associated with loneliness and social isolation have important implications for the cognitive and psychosocial health of older adults. Future studies should investigate whether treating hearing loss can decrease loneliness and social isolation in older adults.
Does social isolation mediate the association between hearing loss and cognition in adults? A systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal studies

Abstract:Background: There has been extensive research on the relationship between hearing and cognitive impairment in older adults but little examination of the role of mediating factors. Social isolation is a potential mediator, occurring because of hearing loss, and contributing to accelerated cognitive decline. Previous systematic reviews on this topic area have not considered the temporal nature of hearing loss and cognitive impairment exclusively or examined potential mediators within a longitudinal study design. Methods: A systematic review was conducted. Electronic searches were performed in Web of Science, PubMed (Medline), Scopus, EMBASE, PsychInfo, and ProQuest (PsychArticles and ProQuest Dissertation and Theses) based on a search string of keywords relating to hearing loss, social isolation, and cognitive impairment/dementia in June 2023. Papers were critically appraised using the CASP checklists for cohort studies. Risk of bias in the selected studies was assessed using the Item Bank for Assessment of Risk of Bias and Precision for Observational Studies of Interventions or Exposures. Results: Eleven of the 15 included studies provide evidence of a dose-dependent association between hearing threshold (40 dB HL or greater) and later cognitive impairment or incident dementia. Only one study included social isolation as a mediator, which was found to not be a significant contributing factor. The meta-analysis of 5 studies pooled hazard ratio for cognitive impairment due to hearing loss is 1.11 (95% CI: 1.06 to 1.15, p < 0.001). The pooled hazard ratio for incident dementia due to hearing loss was HR 1.21 (95% CI: 1.11 to 1.31, p = 0.002). Conclusion: The analysis of included studies indicate that hearing threshold level affects later cognitive status or dementia diagnosis. There is not enough evidence to determine the role of social isolation as a mediator. Future epidemiology studies need to measure different elements of social isolation and ensure that hearing and cognition are measured at multiple time points.

Abstract:Aim : Best-practice in audiological rehabilitation takes a holistic client- and family-centred approach and considers hearing care in the context of personal well-being. Hearing loss not only impairs the ability to hear, but can also compromise the ability to communicate, thus negatively impacting both social and emotional well-being. Hearing care professionals play a key role in fostering their client's well-being. This paper aims to provide evidence-based recommendations to ensure inclusion of social-emotional well-being in audiologic rehabilitation clinical practice. Methods : A review of current research and expert opinion. Results : This guide proposes a 5-step plan which includes: identifying the client's social-emotional well-being; including family members in audiological rehabilitation; incorporating social-emotional needs and goals in an individualized management plan; relating identified hearing needs and goals to rehabilitation recommendations; and using counselling skills and techniques to explore and monitor social-emotional well-being. Each component of the 5-step plan is discussed and clinical considerations are presented. Conclusion : These comprehensive recommendations provide guidance to hearing care professionals looking to ensure clients' social-emotional well-being are considered throughout the rehabilitation journey.

Abstract:A primary complaint of people with hearing impairment is difficulty understanding speech in noise ( Woods et al. 2015 ). As such, substantial knowledge has been acquired about mechanisms underlying speech perception ( Pardo et al. 2021 ) and a wide arsenal of speech-in-noise test batteries has been developed ( Ellis et al. 2016 ; Kuk et al. 2020 ; Zaar et al. 2023 ). In contrast, little is known about auditory perception of so-called "environmental sounds"—that is nonlinguistic sounds corresponding to either nonspeech natural sounds (e.g., sounds of nature such as animal vocalizations and geophysical sounds including wind, rain, stream sounds), mechanical or electronic machines, and human activity—or how it is affected in people with hearing loss. This is curious considering the long-recognized importance of environmental sounds for ensuring a person's awareness of, and connection to, objects and events in the immediate environment ( Ramsdell 1978 ; Gaver 1993 ). Following the ecological perspective introduced by Gibson (1966 ) in vision sciences, and later expanded by Gaver (1993 ) and Neuhoff (2004 ) in hearing sciences, it is essential to consider the broad functional significance of all elements of the soundscape in the context of everyday human behavior. People spend less time in situations involving speech communication than in situations where they are monitoring surroundings, that is, when they are collecting nonlinguistic information to build a perceptual representation of their close environment to orient, navigate, and assess potential resources, opportunities for action, and danger ( Keidser et al. 2020 ; Smeds et al. 2020 ; Lorenzi et al. 2023 ). Of particular interest, in addition to communication needs, is the role of natural sounds in the (re)habilitation of permanent hearing loss, which falls under the domain of human auditory ecology.

Abstract:Abstract This session will discuss hearing loss and vision impairment as modifiable risk factors for social isolation, loneliness, and mood disorders from both epidemiologic and intervention perspectives. Prevalence of hearing and vision loss is high; two-thirds of older adults have hearing loss and over one-quarter have vision impairment. Hearing loss and vision impairment have been linked to poor cognitive and physical health but remain understudied in the context of social and mental health in large, population-based studies. Research gaps remain in measurement (findings typically based on subjective assessments) and generalizability. This session will investigate associations between objectively measured hearing, vision, and dual sensory loss on social isolation and mood disorders using a sample nationally representative of older adults in the US. This session will also describe potential mechanistic and environmental factors, such as fatigue and exclusion of hearing loss and vision impairment in health care settings that may explain observed associations. Whether treatment of hearing loss and vision impairment is an effective intervention for improving social and mental health is unknown. We will conclude by presenting findings from a randomized controlled trial designed to test whether a hearing intervention consisting of provision of hearing aids and related technologies, counseling, and education could reduce cognitive decline in older adults with untreated hearing loss. We focus on the effect of hearing intervention on social isolation and loneliness, both pre-specified outcomes of this trial. This is a Loneliness and Social Isolation Interest Group Sponsored Symposium. This is a collaborative symposium between the Loneliness and Social Isolation and Sensory Health Interest Groups.
The impact of hearing loss on cognitive impairment: The mediating role of depressive symptoms and the moderating role of social relationships

Abstract:Background Given the potentially negative effects of hearing loss on mental health and cognitive function, it is critical to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the link between hearing loss and cognitive impairment. This study aimed to investigate the moderating effects of social relationships, including their components in the role of depressive symptoms as a mediator between hearing loss and cognitive impairment. Methods Cross-sectional analyses were conducted with 8,094 Chinese older adults (aged ≥65 years) from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey in 2018. Simple mediation analysis and moderated mediation analysis were conducted to examine the roles of depressive symptoms and social relationships in the association between hearing loss and cognitive impairment. Results There is a significant correlation between hearing loss, depressive symptoms, social relationships, and cognitive function. Depressive symptoms partially mediated the association between hearing loss and cognitive function [standardized regression B-coefficient (B) = −0.114; 95% confidence interval (CI): (−0.158, −0.076)]. Social relationships moderated the effect of hearing loss on cognitive function through both path b (depressive symptoms - cognitive function) [ B = 0.021; 95% CI: (0.008, 0.034)], and path c’ (hearing loss-cognitive function) [ B = 0.597; 95% CI: (0.463, 0.730)]. Furthermore, social activities and social networks moderated both the direct and indirect effects of moderated mediation. However, there appeared to be no moderated effect of social support for both the direct and indirect paths. Conclusion Social relationships moderated both the direct and indirect effects of depressive symptoms on the association between hearing loss and cognitive impairment. These findings shed light on the mechanisms underlying the relationship between hearing loss and cognitive impairment in Chinese older adults. It might be worthwhile to recommend multidimensional health and social interventions aimed at improving mental health and social inclusion among older adults with hearing loss.

Abstract:Up to 1.5 billion people worldwide suffer from various forms of hearing loss, with an additional 1.1 billion people at risk from various insults such as increased consumption of recreational noise-emitting devices and ageing. The most common type of hearing impairment is sensorineural hearing loss caused by the degeneration or malfunction of cochlear hair cells or spiral ganglion nerves in the inner ear. There is currently no cure for hearing loss. However, emerging frontier technologies such as gene, drug or cell-based therapies offer hope for an effective cure. In this review, we discuss the current therapeutic progress for the treatment of hearing loss. We describe and evaluate the major therapeutic approaches being applied to hearing loss and summarize the key trials and studies.

Hearing loss and psychosocial outcomes: Influences of social emotional aspects and personality

Abstract:The aim of this study was to examine the effects of social isolation, loneliness, anxiety, depression, higher stress, and memory complaints interacting with personality traits as a function of hearing loss. Personality traits have previously been shown to correlate with anxiety and depression, as well as hearing loss, suggesting an effect of personality on the relationship between social emotional outcomes and hearing loss. A cross-sectional survey including validated screening measures was anonymously administered. Measures included personality (Big Five Index-2 Extra-Short Form), stress (Perceived Stress Scale), anxiety and depression (Patient Health Questionnaire for Depression and Anxiety), loneliness (Three-Item Loneliness Scale), social engagement (Lubben Social Network Scale-6), and self-perceived memory complaints (Subjective Cognitive Function). Eight hundred and ninety-one responses were obtained from adults between the ages of 18 and 90 years old (M = 50 years old). Hearing loss was positively correlated with subjective memory complaints only when not accounting for demographic variables, personality traits, psychosocial outcomes, and social emotional outcomes. There were additive effects of hearing loss and negative emotionality on increases in memory complaints in those who self-identified as maybe having hearing loss. Higher degrees of hearing loss also increased loneliness, with greater hearing loss negating the positive correlation between extraversion and social engagement. Overall, our results suggest that hearing loss significantly interacts with personality traits and other social emotional measures. Our results suggest that the impact of hearing loss on memory complaints, social isolation, and loneliness may differ across patients with hearing loss in comparison with those who think they maybe have hearing loss. Information from this study may provide insights for hearing healthcare and mental healthcare professionals to better serve persons with hearing loss who may require additional support or interventions.

Abstract:Background: Hearing impairment i.e., reduced hearing acuity, has adverse effects on the physical, cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and social functions of an individual, resulting in passivity, social withdrawal, and negative impact on the quality of life (QOL). The present study aimed to determine whether participation in a counseling-based aural rehabilitation program and hearing aids would enhance the QOL of severely hearing-impaired by reducing their learned helplessness and social isolation.Methods: The study included 52 participants (35 males and 17 females) in the age range of 45-65 years having severe hearing loss with high perceived social isolation and learned helplessness and low quality of life. Scales used are Friendship scale for social isolation, LH scale for learned helplessness, and WHOQOL-Bref for quality of life. A paired t-test was applied to see the significant difference between pre and post scores.Results: Pre- and post-intervention analysis showed that learned helplessness and perceived social isolation was significantly reduced as a function of intervention with a substantially better quality of life.Conclusions: Aural rehabilitation program combined with hearing aids resulted in a better quality of life by reducing isolation and helplessness.

Perspectives of the ASHA Special Interest Groups

Abstract:More than 460 million people are impacted by disabling hearing loss worldwide. Hearing loss has negative impacts across the life span and varies by individual. Specifically, in children, hearing loss has been shown to affect learning outcomes, behavioral and cognitive growth, and psychosocial development. In adults, hearing loss has been shown to affect quality of life, social isolation, depression, and anxiety. The purpose of this review is to advance the understanding of the latest research in the development of new treatments of hearing loss, including gene therapy, stem cell therapy, and pharmacotherapies. We address the use of animals to model human hearing loss and the importance of animals in previous discoveries and developing new therapies. We highlight the importance of early identification for better speech and developmental outcomes specifically in pediatric individuals. Lastly, we review new possibilities in the prevention of hearing loss and the path to translation into practice. Research and development of new therapies to treat hearing loss is an ever growing field with many notable successes. However, clinical translation still poses many challenges. Many discoveries related to gene therapy, stem cell therapy, and pharmacotherapy are in the early phases of clinical trials and hold promise. This review empowers audiologists to be aware of these most recent developments and be conscious of the evolving future landscape of treatment and management of hearing loss.

Applying the chain formation model to magnetic properties of aggregated ferrofluids.

Abstract:The magnetization properties of aggregated ferrofluids are calculated by combining the chain formation model developed by Zubarev with the modified mean-field theory. Using moderate assumptions for the inter- and intrachain interactions we obtain expressions for the magnetization and initial susceptibility. When comparing the results of our theory to molecular dynamics simulations of the same model we find that at large dipolar couplings (lambda>3) the chain formation model appears to give better predictions than other analytical approaches. This supports the idea that chain formation is an important structural ingredient of strongly interacting dipolar particles.

Abstract:Purpose: Aging increases risk for hearing loss, cognitive decline, and social isolation; however, the nature of their interconnection remains unclear. This study examined the interplay between age-related hearing loss, cognitive decline, and social isolation in adults by testing the ability to understand speech in background noise, a challenge frequently reported by many older adults. Method: We analyzed data collected from 128 adults (20–79 years of age, M age = 51 years) recruited as part of the Aging Brain Cohort at the University of South Carolina repository. The participants underwent testing for hearing, cognition, and social interaction, which included pure-tone audiometry, a words-in-noise (WIN) test, a hearing questionnaire (Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale [SSQ12]), a social questionnaire (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System-57 Social), and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. We used a single pure-tone average (PTA) threshold value and a single WIN threshold value for each participant because there were no differences on average between the left and right ears. Results: Poorer hearing was significantly associated with cognitive decline, through both PTA and WIN thresholds, with a stronger association observed for WIN threshold. Adults with poorer hearing also exhibited greater social isolation, as evidenced by their WIN threshold and SSQ12 score, although not through PTA. This connection was more pronounced with the WIN threshold than with the SSQ12 score. Cognition was not related to social isolation, suggesting that social isolation is affected more by the ability to understand words in noise than by cognition in a nondemented population. Conclusions: Understanding speech in challenging auditory environments rather than mere threshold detection is strongly linked to social isolation and cognitive decline. Abstract:Asphyxiophilic sex is a form of autoerotic activity, in which the user creates mechanical means (such as hanging or bondage) in order to achieve cerebral hypoxia, which, in turn, enhances sexual, as well as orgasmic, stimulus. Failure of safety mechanisms, created by the user, may lead to instant death as a result of asphyxiation or strangulation. This kind of sexual practice is more prevalent among men than in women. In cases of death, it is difficult to relate it to the sexual practice itself. Suicide and homicide are the main differential diagnoses. Closely related derivatives of asphyxiophilic sex are anesthesiophilia (inhalation of variable volatile substances) and electrophilia (use of electric current during sexual activity)--both also intended to enhance the sexual stimulation. These forms of sexual practice are less prevalent than asphyxiophilia.

Abstract:Objectives:This study examines the association of hearing impairment and chronic diseases (diabetes mellitus, lung disease, cardiac disease, stroke, cancer, peripheral artery disease, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis) with psychosocial status (depression, self-efficacy, mastery, loneliness, social network size) in older persons. Methods:The sample consists of 3,107 persons (55 to 85 years) participating in the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam. MANOVA, adjusted for covariates, was used to test the effect of hearing impairment on the combined outcomes. The association of hearing impairment and chronic diseases with psychosocial status was studied using multivariate regression analyses. Results:Hearing impaired elderly report significantly more depressive symptoms, lower self-efficacy and mastery, more feelings of loneliness, and a smaller social network than normally hearing peers. Whereas chronic diseases show significant associations with some outcomes, hearing impairment is significantly associated with all psychosocial variables. Discussion:The findings emphasize the negative effect of hearing impairment on quality of life.

Abstract:Introduction: Hearing loss is commonly associated with aging, occurring in around 60% of people over the age of 60. The impact of hearing loss can have consequences for the person themselves, but can also have collateral effects. Family members, especially spouses, often take on additional responsibilities, and family roles can be altered. Age-related hearing loss impacts daily life, quality of life and the role of caregivers. Objective: To assess the impact of hearing aids on the quality of life and social participation of hearing-impaired elderly people and their families. Methods: Systematic literature review using the CINHAL, Embase, Medline and Pubmed databases, with no age restriction.
