Associations of Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior With Self-Rated Health Status in Brazilian Older Adults

Abstract:In a longevity society, as we live longer, adopting healthy lifestyles is essential to develop and maintain functional ability, which enables well-being in older adults. We aim to examine the associations of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviors (SBs) with self-rated health (SRH) status in older Brazilian adults. We analyzed 21,701 persons aged 60 or older from the Brazilian National Health Survey. A partial proportional odds model for SRH adjusted by sociodemographic confounders was estimated. The marginal effects of PA and SB on SRH status were expressed in terms of the average-adjusted probabilities. In addition, average-adjusted probabilities for the better and worse SRH status among representative cases of Brazilian socioeconomic inequalities were calculated. The main findings of the study indicate: (a) a significant positive association exists between PA and SRH status and, conversely, a negative association exists between SB and SRH; (b) the PA effect across daily sitting time watching TV attenuated and improved the probability of declaring a worse and better SRH status, respectively; and (c) the SRH status differences associated with PA and SB represent the socioeconomic inequalities in the older Brazilian population. Beyond some methodological limitations, we conclude that increasing PA and SB in older persons is significantly associated with better and worse SRH status, respectively. In addition, the results suggest that SRH status is a consistent health inequality measurement. In societies moving on longevity transition, substantial efforts are required in individuals' behavior across the life courses and public policies to promote healthy aging.

Abstract:Objectives: The primary aim of this study is to assess the relationship between different aspects of physical activity (PA) and dementia occurrence in older adults from Brazil. Methods: It is a secondary analysis of the first wave data derived from the ELSI-Brazil study, a longitudinal study of aging in Brazil with a representative sample of Brazilians aged 50 years and older (n = 9,412). We employed two distinct approaches to assess PA. First, participants' levels of PA were classified in low, moderate and high based on their reported physical exertion over the preceding seven days at the time of interview. Also, PA was classified as sufficient or not sufficient, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation. Dementia was defined as those who were 60 years and older, had a cognitive performance ≤1.5 z-score compared to a sub- sample defined as control-group, and also had an impairment in instrumental activity of daily living. Logistic regression was used to estimate the association between physical activity and dementia (crude and adjusted for age, gender, schooling, marital status, smoking and alcoholconsumption). Results: After excluding those younger than 60 years old and had missing data to any of the variables analyzed, our sample was composed by 4,994 individuals (table 1), with a mean age of 69.7 (SD = 7 .5), 4.7 years of schooling (SD = 4.3) and 214 (4.1%) classified as living with dementia. We also found that higher levels of PA were associated with lower occurrences of dementia (table 2) (moderate OR 0.57 95% CI 0.37 –0 .90, p < 0.05; high OR 0.32 95% CI 0.19 –0.56, p < 0.001). Also, practicing the level of PA recommended by WHO had an inverse association with dementia (table 3) (OR 0.49 95% CI 0.30 – 0.79, p < 0.05). Conclusions: The main limitation of our study is its cross-sectional nature. Therefore, we cannot determine the direction of relationships between variables. Our findings show a significant inverse association between levels of PA and dementia occurrence. Additionally, adherence to the WHO's recommendation for PA also showed a significant inverse association with dementia occurrence. These results underscore the importance of promoting regular physical activity as a potential preventive measure against dementia among older Brazilian adults.

Abstract:Abstract Background and Objectives The relationship between the 24-hour movement behavior and specific domains of cognitive function is unclear. The purpose of this study was to identify the joint association of daily time spent in light (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), sedentary behavior (SB), and sleep with cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults. Research Design and Methods Cross-sectional data from wave 3 (2017-2019) of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) were analyzed. The study included adults aged 41-84 years old. Physical activity was assessed using a waist-worn accelerometer. Cognitive function was examined using standardized tests to assess memory, language, and trail-making test. Global cognitive function score was calculated averaging domain-specific scores. Compositional isotemporal substitution models were performed to identify the association between the reallocation of time spent in LPA, MVPA, sleep, and SB with cognitive function. Results Participants (n=8,608) were 55.9% female (mean age 58.9 [8.6] years). Reallocating time from SB to MVPA was associated with higher cognitive function: reallocating 15 minutes to MVPA by reducing 5 minutes from each other behavior was associated with increased odds of better cognitive function in both insufficient (<7 hours/day) (OR: 0.64; 95%CI: 0.54-0.77) and sufficient (≥7 hours/day) (OR: 0.62; 95%CI: 0.58-0.67) sleep groups. Among those with insufficient sleep, reallocating time to MVPA and sleep from SB was associated with higher global cognitive performance. Discussion and Implications Small reductions in SB and increments in MVPA were associated with higher cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract:The study goal was to examine the association between perceived neighborhood characteristics and walking in urban older adults in Brazil. A cross-sectional study including 4,027 older adults from the baseline of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil) was performed. Walking was measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Neighborhood characteristics were questions about physical disorder, noise pollution, safety, violence, social cohesion, services, concerns with community mobility, and pleasantness. Multinomial logistic regression was used. Concern about taking the bus, subway, or train was inversely associated with walking for men. Violence (victim of theft, robbery, or had home broken into) and social cohesion (trust in neighbors) were positively and inversely associated with walking for women, respectively. A significant interaction term between social cohesion and number of chronic diseases was observed for women. These findings demonstrate the need for sex-specific interventions and policies to increase the walking levels among older Brazilian adults.

Abstract:A sensitive, specific, high-pressure liquid chromatographic assay for the determination of tocainide in whole blood is described. The residue from a methylene chloride extract of alkalinized blood was resolvated in a mobile phase of methanol--water (47:53) containing 1% acetic acid and 6.16 mM 1-octanesulfonic acid, adjusted to pH 4.0. Chromatography was performed on a reversed-phase column with detection at 254 or 225 nm. The limits of accurate measurement were 2 microgram/ml for a 1-ml blood sample monitored at 254 nm and 0.2 microgram/ml for a 2-ml sample monitored at 225 nm. The assay was tested on samples from emergency protocol patients and was also found suitable for single-dose pharmacokinetic studies.
Social inequalities in health behaviors among Brazilian adults: National Health Survey, 2013

Abstract:Background: Considering the high socioeconomic inequalities prevailing in Brazil and lifestyle as a strong determinant of morbidity and premature mortality, our purpose was to evaluate the degree of socioeconomic disparities in the prevalence of health behaviors among Brazilian adult population using data from the 2013 Brazilian National Health Survey. Method: Based on a sample of 49,025 individuals aged 20 to 59 years, we estimated the prevalence of several health behaviors and a score of unhealthy behaviors according to gender, education, race/color and possession of private health insurance. The prevalence ratios adjusted by age and gender were estimated by means of multiple Poisson regression and the analyses took into account the sampling design. Results: Significant social inequalities were identified in the Brazilian adults. Higher prevalence of current smoking, leisure-time physical inactivity, sedentary lifestyle, whole milk consumption and low ingestion of greens, vegetables, and fruits were observed among the less educated, in the non-white population, and among those without private health insurance. Higher prevalence of heavy episodic drinking was found in the non-white population, but no difference in the consumption of fatty meat was found according to skin color. Score of unhealthy behavior higher than 6 was more frequent in lower educational strata (PR = 3.74) in the non-white population (PR = 1.39) and among those without private health insurance (PR = 1.78). Compared to women, men had higher prevalence rates of smoking, hazardous alcohol consumption, and fatty meat consumption and lower consumption of greens, vegetables and fruits. Conclusion: The results of the study emphasize the importance of monitoring social inequalities in health as part of national health policies and the urgent need to prioritize actions to promote healthy behaviors, especially among the most socially vulnerable segments of society.

Abstract:To determine the mechanism of action responsible for the in vivo antitumor activity of a phosphorothioate antisense inhibitor targeted against human C-raf kinase (ISIS 5132, also known as CGP69846A), a series of mismatched phosphorothioate analogs of ISIS 5132 or CGP69846A were synthesized and characterized with respect to hybridization affinity, inhibitory effects on C-raf gene expression in vitro, and antitumor activity in vivo. Incorporation of a single mismatch into the sequence of ISIS 5132 or CGP69846A resulted in reduced hybridization affinity toward C-raf RNA sequences and reduced inhibitory activity against C-raf expression in vitro and tumor growth in vivo. Moreover, incorporation of additional mismatches resulted in further loss of in vitro and in vivo activity in a manner that correlated well with a hybridization-based (i.e., antisense) mechanism of action. These results provide important experimental evidence supporting an antisense mechanism of action underlying the in vivo antitumor activity displayed by ISIS 5132 or CGP69846A.
Physical Activity Level and Sleep Quality in Community-Dwelling Older Adults. A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Abstract The worldwide increase in life expectancy has resulted in a significant aging of the population. The physiological and functional changes that result from the aging process, changes in sleep patterns, and the prevalence of chronic diseases affect the health and well-being of individuals aged over 60. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between levels of physical activity (PA) and sleep quality in community-dwelling older adults. Methods This is a cross-sectional study, with the participants randomly recruited according to the region and street in which they live. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was applied to assess sleep quality, the Modified Baecke Questionnaire for the Elderly (MBQ-E) to assess PA levels, as well as questionnaires to obtain social, demographic and anthropometric data. Multivariable regression analyses were conducted with PA activity as the independent variable and sleep quality as the dependent variable of interest, while also considering all potential covariates. Results A total of 503 older adults were analyzed, of whom 377 (75%) were classified as inactive and only 126 (25%) as active. Among the participants, 344 (68.4%) had poor sleep quality, 86 (17.1%) had symptoms of insomnia, and 57 (11.5%) reported complaints of excessive daytime sleepiness. We found that 128 participants (25.4%) consumed alcohol and 41 (8.2%) were current smokers. Multivariate regression results showed an inverse association between PA levels and sleep (Beta coefficient = −0.67 ([95% confidence interval = −1.29 to −0.04]). Conclusions The results of the study indicate that being physically inactive is associated with poor sleep quality.
Sedentary Behavior, Obesity, and Disabilities in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Analysis of the Brazilian National Health Survey 2019

Abstract:Research suggests that sedentary behavior (SB) and obesity are associated with disabilities in basic activities (BADL) and instrumental (IADL) activities of daily living. However, there is a lack of studies investigating this association in community-dwelling older adults. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between different SB typologies, isolated and in conjunction with obesity, and their associations with BADL and IADL disabilities in community-dwelling Brazilian older adults. This was a cross-sectional study using data from older adults (≥60 years) who participated in the Brazilian National Health Survey (2019). The exposures were obesity (BMI > 27 kg/m2) and the amount of time spent daily on SB watching television (SB TV < 3 and ≥3 h/day) and engaging in leisure activities (SB leisure < 3 and ≥3 h/day), analyzed both separately and jointly. The outcomes were BADL and IADL disabilities. The main results showed that isolated SB TV ≥ 3 h/day (OR: 1.26; 95% CI: 1.14; 1.39) and SB TV ≥ 3 h/day combined with obesity (OR: 1.55; 95% CI: 1.37; 1.75) increased the odds of BADL and IADL disabilities. Obesity alone (OR: 1.21; 95% CI: 1.07; 1.36) increased only the odds of BADL disabilities. Moreover, SB leisure ≥ 3 h/day without obesity reduced the odds of IADL disabilities (OR: 0.56; 95% CI: 0.41; 0.76). Ideally, older adults should be encouraged to prevent obesity, reduce excessive periods spent in SB watching TV, and increase the daily periods spent in leisure activities, thus minimizing the likelihood of disabilities in functional activities.

Abstract:Abstract Background The physical inactivity is a global health concern, so that recommendations on sufficient physical activity levels are elaborated worldwide, such as in Brazil. However, the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines were first in the world to consider time-specific recommendations for physical activity, sedentary behavior and sleep, which is still not developed for Latin-American population. The present study aimed to verify the adherence to Canadian 24-hour guidelines in a Brazilian inner city and to analyze its association with sociodemographic aspects. Methods A cross-sectional epidemiological study, with a sample composed by 250 adults (140 women), with a median age of 41.0 years. Objective measures of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and sedentary behavior were collected by accelerometry. Sleep duration and sociodemographic aspects (ethnicity, gender, age, educational attainment and socioeconomic level) were obtained through a face-to-face questionnaire. Canadian 24-hour guidelines considered ≥ 150 min/week of MVPA, <8 h/day of sedentary behavior and daily sleep time between 7 and 9 h, being analyzed separately and in combination. Poisson regression with robust variance estimator was used to analyze the prevalence ratio (PR) of meeting the 24-hour guidelines according to the categories of sociodemographic variables, being performed by the software IBM SPSS version 25.0. Results The complete 24-hour guidelines were met only by 24.4% of sample ( n = 61). Sedentary behavior was the most met guideline (88%), followed by MVPA (56.8%) and sleep (53.2%), without significant difference according to sex. When compared to elderly participants, those participants in younger groups (18–39 years and 40–59 years) were more likely to meet MVPA guideline (PR = 2.51 [95%CI = 1.47; 4.28] and PR = 2.60 [95%CI = 1.52; 4.45], respectively), as well as the combination of MVPA and sedentary behavior (PR = 1.98 [95%CI = 1.13; 3.44] and PR = 2.17 [95%CI = 1.25; 3.79], respectively) and MVPA with the sleep guideline (PR = 2.39 [95%CI = 1.09; 5.27] only for 18–39 years group). Men were more likely to meet MVPA guideline than women (PR = 1.29 [95%CI = 1.04; 1.59]). Conclusion Younger aged and male adults were more likely to meet the Canadian 24-hour guidelines in a small Brazilian city. However, further studies with larger and representative samples of sociodemographic stratum are still needed.

Association between self-perception of the neighborhood environment and sleep problems in older Brazilian adults: findings from ELSI-Brazil

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate associations between neighborhood perception and sleep problems in older Brazilian adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 5,719 community-dwelling older adults (≥ 60 years) from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil, 2019-2021). The outcomes were self-reported sleep problems: poor sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, primary insomnia complaints, difficulty staying asleep, and waking up at dawn. The exposure variables were questions about the perception of participants about the physical and social environment of the neighborhood. Logistic regression was used in data analysis. Garbage, rubbish, or tall grass on the streets and the desire to move were associated with higher odds of poor sleep quality. Concern about falling due to damaged sidewalks, concern about having difficulties taking transportation, and concern about having difficulties crossing the street were associated with higher odds of all sleep problems. Sound/noise of buses and cars was associated with higher odds of some sleep problems. Perceiving the neighborhood as a good place to live was associated with lower odds of daytime sleepiness and primary insomnia complaints. Trusting most people in the neighborhood and perceiving that kids and younger people treat adults with respect were associated with lower odds of daytime sleepiness, primary insomnia complaints, and waking up at dawn. Being a good place for kids to play and raise teenagers was associated with lower odds of daytime sleepiness. These results can assist public administrators in creating urban planning policies aimed at improving neighborhood environments as a means of health promotion.

Abstract:The physical activity practice is highlighted as a strategy to health promotion and to avoid chronic diseases. In addition to individual factors, environmental characteristics in which people live, may offer opportunities or barriers in adopting healthy habits and this is related to the physical activity (PA) practice among individuals. The aim of this study is to investigate the associations between neighborhood environment and leisure-time physical activity in adults. This is a cross-sectional study, developed using the database of Surveillance System for Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases by Telephone Survey (VIGITEL 2008/2010) of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Individuals with the habit of practicing PA for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity PA or at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity PA throughout the week in leisure time were classified as active in leisure time. To characterize the built and social environment we used georeferenced data of public and private places for physical activity, population density, residential density, homicide rate and total income of the coverage area of the basic health units. The covered area of the basic health units was used as context unit. For data analysis, we used multilevel logistic regression. The study included 5779 adults, 58.77% female. There was variability of physical activity in leisure time between area covered by the basic health units (Median Odds ratio = 1.30). After adjusting for individual characteristics, the increase of density of private places for physical activity (Odds ratios-OR = 1.31; 95% confidence interval-95% CI: 1.15 to 1.48) and the smaller homicide rate (OR = 0.82; IC95%: 0.70 to 0.96) in the neighborhood increased physical activity in leisure time. The evidence of this study shows that neighborhood environment may influence the physical activity practice in leisure time and should be considered in future interventions and health promotion strategies.

Abstract:Background: Considering the interrelationship between the multiple determinants of nutritional status, analyses are needed to estimate direct and mediated effects between the variables that influence body mass index (BMI) in older adults. We aimed to verify the direct and indirect effects of sociodemographic, behavioral and health conditions on the BMI of older adults in the community. Methods: This is a longitudinal study based on data collection in 2015 and 2020. Descriptive analysis and Structural Equation Modeling were performed, considering p<0.05. Results: The sample consisted of 220 older adults with a mean baseline age of 68.86 years (± 7.10). Direct associations of higher BMI value with younger age, higher monthly family income, greater functional disability to perform instrumental activities of daily living and greater number of morbidities were found. In addition, education, gender, moderate to vigorous physical activity were indirectly associated with high BMI. Conclusion: These findings provide insights into the complex relationship of multiple determinants of nutritional status in older adults and support the design of public health policies that consider the specificities of this population group.

Abstract:BackgroundThe demographic shift and epidemiologic transition in Brazil have drawn attention to ways of measuring population health that complement studies of mortality. In this paper, we investigate regional differences in healthy life expectancy based on information from the National Health Survey (PNS), 2013.MethodsIn the survey, a three-stage cluster sampling (census tracts, households and individuals) with stratification of the primary sampling units and random selection in all stages was used to select 60,202 Brazilian adults (18 years and over). Healthy life expectancies (HLE) were estimated by Sullivan’s method according to sex, age and geographic region, using poor self-rated health for defining unhealthy status. Logistic regression models were used to investigate socioeconomic and regional inequalities in poor self-rated health, after controlling by sex and age.ResultsWide disparities by geographic region were found with the worst indicators in the North and Northeast regions, whether considering educational attainment, material deprivation, or health care utilization. Life expectancy at birth for women and men living in the richest regions was 5 years longer than for those living in the less wealthy regions. Modeling the variation across regions for poor self-rated health, statistically significant effects (p < 0.001) were found for the North and Northeast when compared to the Southeast, even after controlling for age, sex, diagnosis of at least one non-communicable chronic disease, and schooling or socioeconomic class. Marked regional inequalities in HLE were found, with the loss of healthy life much higher among residents of the poorest regions, especially among the elderly.ConclusionsBy combining data on self-rated health status and mortality in a single indicator, Healthy Life Expectancy, this study demonstrated the excess burden of poor health experienced by populations in the less wealthy regions of Brazil. To mitigate the effects of social exclusion, the development of strategies at the regional level is essential to provide health care to all persons in need, reduce risk exposures, support prevention policies for adoption of healthy behaviors. Such strategies should prioritize population groups that will experience the greatest impact from such interventions.

Abstract:A few studies on physical performance (PP) decline among community-dwelling older adults have simultaneously evaluated various outcomes in Brazil. This longitudinal cohort study aimed to verify the association between PP and health outcomes (negative health self-perception—NHSP; consultations with health professionals; disability; falls; and hospitalization) in older Brazilians (N = 476, 68 ± 6.7 years). PP assessments included Gait Speed (GS) and Timed Up and Go (TUG) tests, and changes were evaluated over time (2014 to 2019–2020). The association between the PP and the outcomes was estimated using Poisson's regression with robust variance. The physical tests were not associated with NSPH or with the number of consultations with health professionals. However, after adjustment (economic level, diet quality, physical activity, multimorbidity, depression, polypharmacy, and BMI), low PP at baseline (TUG and GS) was associated with disability at follow-up. A low TUG performance at baseline was also associated with subsequent falls (PR = 1.57, p = 0.007). A decline in GS was associated with hospitalization (PR = 1.86, p = 0.033). PP was associated with disability, falls, and hospitalization over a five- to six-year period in older Brazilians. Regular PP assessments should be conducted and low PP should be used as an indicator of the need for preventative measures to avoid poor health outcomes.

Abstract:Introduction: Quality of life is a multifaceted construct that depends on the person’s subjective perception; however, some studies have shown self-efficacy and cognition with possible indicators of this positive perception of quality of life in people. Objective: Examined prediction of Quality of Life (QL) and its domains according to self-efficacy, physical activity (PA) and cognition among elderly people attending public Open Universities for the elderly in the State of Paraná, Brazil. Method: Cross-sectional descriptive correlational study with a sample of 277 elderly. Questionnaires used: Sociodemographic, WHOQOL-BREF and WHOQOL-OLD, IPAQ, General Perceived Self-Efficacy Scale and Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination. Statistical: Descriptive and inferential analysis (correlation and multiple linear regression), significance p < .05. Results: The mean age was 67.60 (SD=6.65). Self-efficacy was related to QOL and to all domains. PA correlated with general QOL and the Psychological and Social domains. Cognition was correlated with general QOL and five other domains (Physical, Psychological, Social, Environmental, Sensory functioning, Past/Present/ Future Activities). Self-efficacy, PA and Cognition can explain 10% of the general QOL, and 14% of the Environmental domain. The specific QOL and its domains had 10% of explanation. Conclusion: QOL can be explained by the constructs self-efficacy, cognition and PA.

Abstract:The present study investigates whether dissatisfaction with body image, obesity and central obesity are independently associated with physical activity (PA) and if such association differ among men and women. 13,286 participants of ELSA‐Brasil cohort, aged‐35‐65 years. PA assessed by IPAQ and categorized as low, moderate and intense. Nutritional status assessed by body mass index and waist to height ratio. Body image dissatisfaction was defined by the difference between self‐reported body image and ideal body image using a validated silhouette scale. Multinomial logistic regression used to investigate whether body image dissatisfaction, obesity and central obesity are independently associated with PA, after controlling for age, schooling, income and common mental disorder. Prevalence of moderate and intense PA was lower among women than men. Prevalence of body image dissatisfaction was present even among normal weight individuals of both sexes. Body image dissatisfaction was associated with less moderate PA in women and with intense PA in men. Overweight and obese men had higher chances of high intensity PA. Obese women had lower OR of engaging in intense PA. Body image as well as nutritional status is related to PA practice in both sexes, but the association differs according to PA intensity.

Abstract:Objectives Dementia is a fast-growing public health problem. This study examined the association of physical activity and estimated cardiorespiratory fitness (eCRF) with the risk of cognitive impairment. Study design Multicentric, prospective cohort study. Methods We analyzed 10,121 participants of the ELSA-Brasil study. We assessed leisure-time physical activity using the long version of the IPAQ questionnaire and defined moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) per week. We applied a non-exercise prediction equation to estimate eCRF and classified participants as unfit (lowest tertile) and fit. Leisure-time MVPA and eCRF were measured at baseline and follow-up. Incident cognitive impairment was based on memory, language, and executive function assessed at baseline and follow-up. Results During a median of 8.1 (7.8–8.5) years of follow-up, we identified 396 (3.9 %) incident cases of cognitive impairment. There was an inverse, non-linear association between the incidence of cognitive impairment and both leisure time MVPA and eCRF. Low eCRF (IRR: 1.29; 95%CI: 1.02, 1.64) and low MVPA (IRR: 1.40; 1.09, 1.82) were independently associated with an increased incidence. Increasing 1 MET in eCRF from baseline to follow-up visit was associated with a lower incidence of cognitive impairment (IRR: 0.80; 95%CI: 0.71, 0.91), while a decrease of 13.7 min per day in leisure time MVPA is associated with an increased incidence (IRR: 1.16; 95%CI: 1.01, 1.33) of cognitive impairment. These associations remained statistically significant in adults under 65 but not in older adults. Conclusion Low eCRF and leisure time MVPA are strong and independent predictors of incident cognitive impairment especially in middle-aged adults.

Abstract:This study aimed to assess the attention paid by health professionals to elderly individuals with hypertension and related inequalities in Brazil, using level of schooling as the socioeconomic indicator. This was a cross-sectional study with data from the Brazilian National Health Survey, 2013. Attention was assessed according to the following indicators: recommendations for healthy eating, maintaining adequate weight, less salt, regular exercise, prevention of smoking and excessive drinking, and regular medical checkups with blood and urine tests, ECG, and stress test. The recommendations to consume less salt (91%), healthy diet (88%), and regular medical checkups (88%) were the most common. Elderly with complete university degrees showed the highest prevalence rates for recommendations to maintain a healthy diet (PR = 1.12), adequate weight (PR = 1.21), regular exercise (PR = 1.29), regular medical checkups (PR = 1.11), and stress test (PR = 2.26) and all the indicators combined (PR = 2.14) when compared to elderly without schooling. The attention paid to the elderly by health professionals is suboptimal throughout the country. In addition, inequalities in attention to the elderly's needs still persist. Given the growth in the elderly population and chronic non-communicable diseases, efforts are needed to improve the quality of their care and mitigate the related inequalities.
