Abstract:The dynamics of dry active matter have implications for a diverse collection of biological phenomena spanning a range of length and time scales, such as animal flocking, cell tissue dynamics, and swarming of inserts and bacteria. Uniting these systems are a common set of symmetries and conservation laws, defining dry active fluids as a class of physical system. Many interesting behaviours have been observed at high densities, which remain difficult to simulate due to the computational demand. Here, we show how two-dimensional dry active fluids in a dense regime can be studied using a simple modification of the lattice Boltzmann method. We apply our method on a model that exhibits motility-induced phase separation, and an active model with contact inhibition of locomotion, which has relevance to collective cell migration. For the latter, we uncover multiple novel phase transitions: two first-order and one potentially critical. We further support our simulation results with an analytical treatment of the hydrodynamic equations obtained via a Chapman-Enskog coarse-graining procedure.

Phase separation in fluids with many interacting components

Abstract:Abstract Fluids in natural systems, like the cytoplasm of a cell, often contain thousands of molecular species that are organized into multiple coexisting phases that enable diverse and specific functions. How interactions between numerous molecular species encode for various emergent phases is not well understood. Here we leverage approaches from random matrix theory and statistical physics to describe the emergent phase behavior of fluid mixtures with many species whose interactions are drawn randomly from an underlying distribution. Through numerical simulation and stability analyses, we show that these mixtures exhibit staged phase separation kinetics and are characterized by multiple coexisting phases at equilibrium with distinct compositions. Random-matrix theory predicts the number of existing phases at equilibrium, validated by simulations with diverse component numbers and interaction parameters. Surprisingly, this model predicts an upper bound on the number of phases, derived from dynamical considerations, that is much lower than the limit from the Gibbs phase rule, which is obtained from equilibrium thermodynamic constraints. Using a biophysically motivated model of pairwise interactions between components, we design ensembles that encode either linear or non-monotonic scaling relationships between number of components and co-existing phases, which we validate through simulation and theory. Finally, inspired by parallels in biological systems, we show that including nonequilibrium turnover of components through chemical reactions can tunably modulate the number of coexisting phases at steady-state without changing overall fluid composition. Together, our study provides a model framework that describes the emergent dynamical and steady-state phase behavior of liquid-like mixtures with many interacting constituents.
Effects of CYP2D6 Genotypes on Plasma Concentrations of Risperidone and Enantiomers of 9‐Hydroxyrisperidone in Japanese Patients with Schizophrenia

Abstract:It has been shown that risperidone (+)‐9‐hydroxylation is enantioselectively catalyzed by the polymorphic CYP2D6 in human liver. This study aimed to examine the effect of CYP2D6 genotype on (+)‐9‐hydroxylation of risperidone in schizophrenic patients. Subjects were 38 Japanese schizophrenic inpatients receiving 6 mg/day of risperidone. Plasma concentrations of risperidone and (+)‐ and (−)‐9‐hydroxyrisperidone at steady state were quantified using LC/MS/MS and HPLC with α1 acid‐AGP chiral column, respectively. The CYP2D6*5(*5) and *10 alleles were identified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods. Twenty patients had no mutated allele, 14 had one mutated allele, and 4 had two mutated alleles. There were significant differences in the steady‐state plasma concentrations of risperidone (ANOVA; p < 0.0001) among the three genotype groups, while the CYP2D6 genotype did not affect the steady‐state plasma concentrations of (+)‐9‐hydroxyrisperidone (p = 0.314) or (−)‐9‐hydroxyrisperidone (p = 0.957). The concentration ratio of risperidone to 9‐hydroxyrisperidone was strongly dependent on the CYP2D6 genotypes. This study suggests that CYP2D6 activity strongly influences the steady‐state plasma concentrations of risperidone and risperidone/9‐hydroxyrisperidone concentration ratios but is unlikely to determine enantioselectivity in the steady‐state plasma concentrations of 9‐hydroxyrisperidone in the clinical situation.

Abstract:The possible existence of low-density and high-density fluid phase equilibria in fluids with a simple potential consisting in a combination of a square shoulder and a square well is explored by means of perturbation theory and histogram-reweighting grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation. Theory is useful as a simple and computationally inexpensive way to explore large sets of potential parameters to search for potential shapes susceptible to present multiple fluid phases, later confirmed or discarded from computer simulation. It is found that some combinations of the length and energy parameters of the potential actually give rise to such behaviour.

Abstract:Achieving a coherent understanding of the many thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies of water is among the most important unsolved puzzles in physics, chemistry, and biology. One hypothesized explanation imagines the existence of a line of first order phase transitions separating two liquid phases and terminating at a novel "liquid-liquid" critical point in a region of low temperature ($T \approx 250 \rm{K}$) and high pressure ($P \approx 200 \rm{MPa}$). Here we analyze a common model of water, the ST2 model, and find that the entire system flips between liquid states of high and low density. Further, we find that in the critical region crystallites melt on a time scale of nanoseconds. We perform a finite-size scaling analysis that accurately locates both the liquid-liquid coexistence line and its associated liquid-liquid critical point.

Abstract:The fascinating hypothesis that supercooled water may segregate into two distinct liquid phases, each with unique structures and densities, was first posited in a seminal study by Poole et al. in 1992. This idea, initially based on numerical analyses with the ST2 water-like empirical potential, challenged conventional understanding of water’s phase behavior at the time and has since intrigued the scientific community. Over the past three decades, advancements in computational modeling – particularly through the advent of data-driven many-body potentials rigorously derived from “first principles” and augmented by the efficiency of neural networks – have significantly enhanced the accuracy of molecular simulations, enabling the exploration of the phase behavior of water with unprecedented realism. Our study leverages these computational advances to probe the elusive liquid-liquid transition in supercooled water. For the first time, microsecond-long simulations with chemical accuracy, conducted over several years, provide compelling evidence that water indeed exists in two discernibly distinct liquid states at low temperature and high pressure. By pinpointing a realistic estimate for the location of the liquid-liquid critical point, our study not only advances current understanding of water’s anomalous behavior but also establishes a basis for experimental validation. Importantly, our simulations indicate that the liquid-liquid critical point falls within temperature and pressure ranges that could potentially be experimentally probed in water nanodroplets, opening the possibility for direct measurements.

Abstract:The molecular mechanisms of water's unique anomalies are still debated upon. Experimental challenges have led to simulations suggesting a liquid-liquid (LL) phase transition, culminating in the supercooled region's LL critical point (LLCP). Computational expense, small system sizes, and the reliability of water models often limit these simulations. We adopt the CVF model, which is reliable, transferable, scalable, and efficient across a wide range of temperatures and pressures around ambient conditions. By leveraging the timescale separation between fast hydrogen bonds and slow molecular coordinates, the model allows a thorough exploration of the metastable phase diagram of liquid water. Using advanced numerical techniques to bypass dynamical slowing down, we perform finite-size scaling on larger systems than those used in previous analyses. Our study extrapolates thermodynamic behavior in the infinite-system limit, demonstrating the existence of the LLCP in the 3D Ising universality class in the low-temperature, low-pressure side of the line of temperatures of maximum density, specifically at TC = 186 ± 4 K and PC = 174 ± 14 MPa, at the end of a liquid-liquid phase separation stretching up to ∼200 MPa. These predictions align with recent experimental data and sophisticated models, highlighting that hydrogen bond cooperativity governs the LLCP and the origin of water anomalies. We also observe substantial cooperative fluctuations in the hydrogen bond network at scales larger than 10 nm, even at temperatures relevant to biopreservation. These findings have significant implications for nanotechnology and biophysics, providing new insights into water's behavior under varied conditions.

Abstract:A methodology is presented for Monte Carlo simulation of fluids in a new ensemble that can be used to obtain phase coexistence properties of multicomponent systems from a single computer experiment. The method is based on performing a simulation simultaneously in two distinct physical regions of generally different densities and compositions. Three types of perturbations are performed, a random displacement of molecules that ensures equilibrium within each region, an equal and opposite change in the volume of the two regions that results in equality of pressures, and random transfers of molecules that equalize the chemical potentials of each component in the two regions. The method is applied to the calculation of the liquid-gas coexistence envelope for the pure Lennard-Jones (6, 12) fluid for several reduced temperatures from the vicinity of the triple point to close to the critical point (T* = 0.75 to T* = 1.30). Good overall agreement with previously available literature results is obtained, with some deviations at the extremes of this temperature range.

Abstract:The thermodynamics of fluids confined between two adsorbing solid substrates (walls) is revisited. Attention is focused on the phase equilibria of an open system characterized by the variables μ (chemical potential), T (temperature), and H (wall separation). Clapeyron equations for the shape of lines of coexistence are derived and used to interpret the results of earlier calculations of two first-order transitions, namely capillary condensation of an undersaturated ‘‘gas’’ to ‘‘liquid’’ and prewetting (thick–thin film transition) at finite H. At such transitions the adsorption Γ and the solvation force f jump discontinuously. Criticality of a confined fluid is associated with the divergence of the derivatives (∂Γ/∂μ)T,H and (∂2Γ/∂μ2)T,H or equivalently, with the divergence of (∂f/∂H)T,μ and (∂2f/∂H2)T,μ. The presence of the additional field variable H, and its conjugate density f, implies that the phase equilibria of a confined fluid can be much richer than those of a bulk fluid or of a single interface (H=∞). By extending the formalism to multicomponent systems Clapeyron equations are derived for the coexistence of phases in confined fluid mixtures. An equation for the shift in chemical potential (or concentration) of the phase separation curve of a binary liquid mixture resulting from confinement at constant pressure and temperature is presented. This equation, which becomes exact for large separations H, is the appropriate analog for mixtures of the Kelvin equation used to describe capillary condensation in pure fluids; it can also be regarded as a generalization to nonzero concentrations of the Ostwald–Freundlich formula for the dependence of solubility on particle size. Our analysis provides a framework for interpreting recent solvation force measurements on phase-separating liquid mixtures.

Interfacial and density fluctuations in a lattice model of motility-induced phase separation

Abstract:We analyze motility-induced phase separation and bubbly phase separation in a two-dimensional lattice model of self-propelled particles. We compare systems where the dense (liquid) phase has slab and droplet geometries. We find that interfacial fluctuations of the slab are well-described by capillary wave theory, despite the existence of bubbles in the dense phase. We attribute this to a separation of time scales between bubble expulsion and interfacial relaxation. We also characterize dependence of liquid and vapor densities on the curvature of the liquid droplet, as well as the density fluctuations inside the phases. The vapor phase behaves similarly to an equilibrium system, displaying a Laplace pressure effect that shifts its density, and Gaussian density fluctuations. The liquid phase has large non-Gaussian fluctuations, but this is not accompanied by a large density shift, contrary to the equilibrium case. Nevertheless, the shift of the vapor density can be used to infer an effective surface tension that appears to also quantify capillary wave fluctuations.

Abstract:We study via molecular-dynamics simulations the thermodynamics of an anomalous fluid confined in a slit pore with one wall structured and attractive and another unstructured and repulsive. We find that the phase diagram of the homogeneous part of the confined fluid is shifted to higher temperatures, densities, and pressures with respect to the bulk, but it can be rescaled on the bulk case. We calculate a moderate increase of mobility of the homogeneous confined fluid that we interpret as a consequence of the layering due to confinement and the collective modes due to long-range correlations. We show that, as in bulk, the confined fluid has structural, diffusion, and density anomalies that order in the waterlike hierarchy, and a liquid-liquid critical point (LLCP). The overall anomalous region moves to higher temperatures, densities, and pressure, and the LLCP displaces to higher temperature compared to bulk. Motivated by experiments, we calculate also the phase diagram not just for the homogeneous part of the confined fluid but for the entire fluid in the pore, and we show that it is shifted toward higher pressures but preserves the thermodynamics, including the LLCP. Because our model has waterlike properties, we argue that in experiments with supercooled water confined in slit pores with a width of >3 nm if hydrophilic and of >1.5 nm if hydrophobic, the existence of the LLCP could be easier to test than in bulk, where it is not directly accessible.

Abstract:Hyperuniformity emerges generically in the coarsening regime of phase-separating fluids. Numerical studies of active and passive systems have shown that the structure factor S(q) behaves as q ς for q → 0, with hyperuniformity exponent ς = 4. For passive systems, this result was explained in 1991 by a qualitative scaling analysis of Tomita, exploiting isotropy at scales much larger than the coarsening length. Here we reconsider and extend Tomita's argument to address cases of active phase separation and of non-constant mobility, again finding ς = 4. We further show that dynamical noise of variance D creates a transient ς = 2 regime for , crossing over to ς = 4 at larger . Here, ν is the coarsening exponent for the domain size , such that , and is the rescaled wavenumber. In diffusive coarsening ν = 1/3, so the rescaled crossover wavevector vanishes at large times when d ≥ 2. The slowness of this decay suggests a natural explanation for experiments that observe a long-lived ς = 2 scaling in phase-separating active fluids (where noise is typically large). Conversely, in d = 1, we demonstrate that with noise the ς = 2 regime survives as t → ∞, with . (The structure factor is not then determined by the zero-temperature fixed point.) We confirm our analytical predictions by numerical simulations of continuum theories for active and passive phase separation in the deterministic case and of Model B for the stochastic case. We also compare them with related findings for a system near an absorbing-state transition rather than undergoing phase separation. A central role is played throughout by the presence or absence of a conservation law for the centre of mass position R of the order parameter field.

Abstract:In phase-separated active fluids, the Ostwald process can go into reverse leading to either microphase separation or bubbly phase separation. We show that the latter is formed of two macroscopic regions that are occupied by the homogeneous fluid and by the microphase separated one. Within the microphase separated fluid, the relative rate of the Ostwald process, coalescence, and nucleation determines whether the size distribution of mesoscopic domains is narrowly peaked or displays a broad range of sizes before attaining a cutoff independent of system-size. Our results are obtained via large-scale simulations of a minimal field theory for active phase separation and reproduced by an effective model in which the degrees of freedom are the locations and sizes of the microphase-separated domains.

Liquid-Liquid Phase Transition for an Attractive Isotropic Potential with Wide Repulsive Range

Abstract:Recent experimental and theoretical results have shown the existence of a liquid-liquid phase transition in isotropic systems, such as biological solutions and colloids, whose interaction can be represented via an effective potential with a repulsive soft-core and an attractive part. We investigate how the phase diagram of a schematic general isotropic system, interacting via a soft-core squared attractive potential, changes by varying the parameters of the potential. It has been shown that this potential has a phase diagram with a liquid-liquid phase transition in addition to the standard gas-liquid phase transition and that, for a short-range soft-core, the phase diagram resulting from molecular dynamics simulations can be interpreted through a modified van der Waals equation. Here we consider the case of soft-core ranges comparable with or larger than the hard-core diameter. Because an analysis using molecular dynamics simulations of such systems or potentials is too time-demanding, we adopt an integral equation approach in the hypernetted-chain approximation. Thus we can estimate how the temperature and density of both critical points depend on the potential's parameters for large soft-core ranges. The present results confirm and extend our previous analysis, showing that this potential has two fluid-fluid critical points that are well separated in temperature and in density only if there is a balance between the attractive and repulsive part of the potential. We find that for large soft-core ranges our results satisfy a simple relation between the potential's parameters.

Abstract:We report a joint simulation and theoretical study of the liquid-vapor phase behaviour of a fluid in which polydispersity in the particle size couples to the strength of the interparticle interactions. Attention is focussed on the case in which the particles diameters are distributed according to a fixed Schulz form with degree of polydispersity $\delta=14%$. The coexistence properties of this model are studied using grand canonical ensemble Monte Carlo simulations and moment free energy calculations. We obtain the cloud and shadow curves as well as the daughter phase density distributions and fractional volumes along selected isothermal dilution lines. In contrast to the case of size-{\em independent} interaction strengths (N.B. Wilding, M. Fasolo and P. Sollich, J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 121}, 6887 (2004)), the cloud and shadow curves are found to be well separated, with the critical point lying significantly below the cloud curve maximum. For densities below the critical value, we observe that the phase behaviour is highly sensitive to the choice of upper cutoff on the particle size distribution. We elucidate the origins of this effect in terms of extremely pronounced fractionation effects and discuss the likely appearance of new phases in the limit of very large values of the cutoff.

Abstract:By means of lattice-based Monte Carlo simulations, we address the properties of two-component lipid membranes on the experimentally relevant spatial scales of the order of a micrometer and time intervals of the order of 1 s, using DMPC/DSPC lipid mixtures as a model system. Our large-scale simulations allowed us to obtain important results not reported previously in simulation studies of lipid membranes. We find that, for a certain range of lipid compositions, the phase transition from the fluid phase to the fluid–gel phase coexistence proceeds via near-critical fluctuations, whereas for other lipid compositions this phase transition has a quasi-abrupt character. In the presence of near-critical fluctuations, transient subdiffusion of lipid molecules is observed. These features of the system are stable with respect to perturbations in lipid interaction parameters used in our simulations. The line tension characterizing lipid domains in the fluid–gel coexistence region is found to be in the pN range. On approaching the critical point, the line tension, the inverse correlation length of fluid–gel spatial fluctuations and the corresponding inverse order parameter susceptibility of the membrane vanish. All these results are in agreement with recent experimental findings for model lipid membranes. Our analysis of the domain coarsening dynamics after an abrupt quench of the membrane to the fluid–gel coexistence region reveals that lateral diffusion of lipids plays an important role in the fluid–gel phase separation process.

Abstract:The effects of mid-range repulsion in Lattice Boltzmann models on the coalescence/breakup behaviour of single-component, non-ideal fluids are investigated. It is found that mid-range repulsive interactions allow the formation of spray-like, multi-droplet configurations, with droplet size directly related to the strength of the repulsive interaction. The simulations show that just a tiny ten-percent of mid-range repulsive pseudo-energy can boost the surface/volume ratio of the phase- separated fluid by nearly two orders of magnitude. Drawing upon a formal analogy with magnetic Ising systems, a pseudo-potential energy is defined, which is found to behave like a quasi-conserved quantity for most of the time-evolution. This offers a useful quantitative indicator of the stability of the various configurations, thus helping the task of their interpretation and classification. The present approach appears to be a promising tool for the computational modelling of complex flow phenomena, such as atomization, spray formation and micro-emulsions, break-up phenomena and possibly glassy-like systems as well.
