Abstract:Leaf dark respiration (Rdark), an important yet rarely quantified component of carbon cycling in forest ecosystems, is often simulated from leaf traits such as the maximum carboxylation capacity (Vcmax), leaf mass per area (LMA), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations, in terrestrial biosphere models. However, the validity of these relationships across forest types remains to be thoroughly assessed. Here, we analyzed Rdark variability and its associations with Vcmax and other leaf traits across three temperate, subtropical and tropical forests in China, evaluating the effectiveness of leaf spectroscopy as a superior monitoring alternative. We found that leaf magnesium and calcium concentrations were more significant in explaining cross-site Rdark than commonly used traits like LMA, N and P concentrations, but univariate trait-Rdark relationships were always weak (r2 ≤ 0.15) and forest-specific. Although multivariate relationships of leaf traits improved the model performance, leaf spectroscopy outperformed trait-Rdark relationships, accurately predicted cross-site Rdark (r2 = 0.65) and pinpointed the factors contributing to Rdark variability. Our findings reveal a few novel traits with greater cross-site scalability regarding Rdark, challenging the use of empirical trait-Rdark relationships in process models and emphasize the potential of leaf spectroscopy as a promising alternative for estimating Rdark, which could ultimately improve process modeling of terrestrial plant respiration.
Leaf respiration/photosynthesis relationship and variation: an investigation of 39 woody and herbaceous species in east subtropical China

Abstract:Thirty-nine plant species including woody and herbaceous species grown in wet and warm subtropical regions were collected and classified into woody and herb functional groups. Net photosynthesis ( P n ) and dark respiration ( R ) were measured at constant 25°C under neither water nor nitrogen limited condition to assess whether the R / P n ratio was constant across different species and functional groups. Our results suggest that P n and R were highly skewed among the 39 species, ranging from 5 to 25 and 1 to 5 μmol m −2 s −1 , respectively, while R / P n ratio was normally distributed at 0.1–0.3. Mean R / P n ratio was 0.19 for 39 species, and 0.20 and 0.18 for woody and herbs, respectively, showing no significant difference between the two groups. Leaf P n , R , and R / P n ratios exhibited large variations across 39 species while R / P n ratio in our subtropical species was considerably higher than other studies. Our results also indicated that the difference within each group was even larger than between the two groups. Based on the pooled data set at global scale, and considering R / P n ratios performance under a combination of wet and warm conditions, the mean R / P n ratio of 0.19 fell between the R / P n ratio of 0.23 under dry and warm conditions and the R / P n ratio of 0.07 under cold regardless of the precipitation conditions. The comparison with published data sets indicated significant effects of long-term precipitation and temperature on leaf R / P n ratios at global scale, and we found that the plants adapting to warm and wet climates including our thirty-nine species tend to have a lower R / P n ratio.
Environmental controls on light inhibition of respiration and leaf and canopy daytime carbon exchange in a temperate deciduous forest

Abstract:Uncertainty in the estimation of daytime ecosystem carbon cycling due to the light inhibition of leaf respiration and photorespiration, and how these small fluxes vary through the growing season in the field, remains a confounding element in calculations of gross primary productivity and ecosystem respiration. Our study focuses on how phenology, short-term temperature changes and canopy position influence leaf-level carbon exchange in Quercus rubra L. (red oak) at Harvard Forest in central Massachusetts, USA. Using leaf measurements and eddy covariance, we also quantify the effect of light inhibition on estimates of daytime respiration at leaf and ecosystem scales. Measured rates of leaf respiration in the light and dark were highest in the early growing season and declined in response to 10-day prior air temperatures (P < 0.01), evidence of within-season thermal acclimation. Leaf respiration was significantly inhibited by light (27.1 ± 2.82% inhibited across all measurements), and this inhibition varied with the month of measurement; greater inhibition was observed in mid-summer leaves compared with early- and late-season leaves. Increases in measurement temperature led to higher rates of respiration and photorespiration, though with a less pronounced positive effect on photosynthesis; as a result, carbon-use efficiency declined with increasing leaf temperature. Over the growing season when we account for seasonally variable light inhibition and basal respiration rates, our modeling approaches found a cumulative 12.9% reduction of leaf-level respiration and a 12.8% reduction of canopy leaf respiration, resulting in a 3.7% decrease in total ecosystem respiration compared with estimates that do not account for light inhibition in leaves. Our study sheds light on the environmental controls of the light inhibition of daytime leaf respiration and how integrating this phenomenon and other small fluxes can reduce uncertainty in current and future projections of terrestrial carbon cycling.
Quantifying Light Response of Leaf-Scale Water-Use Efficiency and Its Interrelationships With Photosynthesis and Stomatal Conductance in C3 and C4 Species

Abstract:Light intensity (I) is the most dynamic and significant environmental variable affecting photosynthesis (An), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (Tr), and water-use efficiency (WUE). Currently, studies characterizing leaf-scale WUE–I responses are rare and key questions have not been answered. In particular, (1) What shape does the response function take? (2) Are there maximum intrinsic (WUEi; WUEi–max) and instantaneous WUE (WUEinst; WUEinst–max) at the corresponding saturation irradiances (Ii–sat and Iinst–sat)? This study developed WUEi–I and WUEinst–I models sharing the same non-asymptotic function with previously published An–I and gs–I models. Observation-modeling intercomparison was conducted for field-grown plants of soybean (C3) and grain amaranth (C4) to assess the robustness of our models versus the non-rectangular hyperbola models (NH models). Both types of models can reproduce WUE–I curves well over light-limited range. However, at light-saturated range, NH models overestimated WUEi–max and WUEinst–max and cannot return Ii–sat and Iinst–sat due to its asymptotic function. Moreover, NH models cannot describe the down-regulation of WUE induced by high light, on which our models described well. The results showed that WUEi and WUEinst increased rapidly within low range of I, driven by uncoupled photosynthesis and stomatal responsiveness. Initial response rapidity of WUEi was higher than WUEinst because the greatest increase of An and Tr occurred at low gs. C4 species showed higher WUEi–max and WUEinst–max than C3 species—at similar Ii–sat and Iinst–sat. Our intercomparison highlighted larger discrepancy between WUEi–I and WUEinst–I responses in C3 than C4 species, quantitatively characterizing an important advantage of C4 photosynthetic pathway—higher An gain but lower Tr cost per unit of gs change. Our models can accurately return the wealth of key quantities defining species-specific WUE–I responses—besides An–I and gs–I responses. The key advantage is its robustness in characterizing these entangled responses over a wide I range from light-limited to light-inhibitory light intensities, through adopting the same analytical framework and the explicit and consistent definitions on these responses. Our models are of significance for physiologists and modelers—and also for breeders screening for genotypes concurrently achieving maximized photosynthesis and optimized WUE.

Abstract:Earth system models are incorporating plant trait diversity into their land components to better predict vegetation dynamics in a changing climate. However, extant plant trait distributions will not allow extrapolations to novel community assemblages in future climates, which will require a mechanistic understanding of the trade-offs that determine trait diversity. In this study, we show how physiological trade-offs involving leaf mass per unit area (LMA), leaf lifespan, leaf nitrogen, and leaf respiration may explain the distribution patterns of evergreen and deciduous trees in the temperate and boreal zones based on (1) an evolutionary analysis of a simple mathematical model and (2) simulation experiments of an individual-based dynamic vegetation model (i.e., LM3-PPA). The evolutionary analysis shows that these leaf traits set up a trade-off between carbon- and nitrogen-use efficiency at the scale of individual trees and therefore determine competitively dominant leaf strategies. As soil nitrogen availability increases, the dominant leaf strategy switches from one that is high in nitrogen-use efficiency to one that is high in carbon-use efficiency or, equivalently, from high-LMA/long-lived leaves (i.e., evergreen) to low-LMA/short-lived leaves (i.e., deciduous). In a region of intermediate soil nitrogen availability, the dominant leaf strategy may be either deciduous or evergreen depending on the initial conditions of plant trait abundance (i.e., founder controlled) due to feedbacks of leaf traits on soil nitrogen mineralization through litter quality. Simulated successional patterns by LM3-PPA from the leaf physiological trade-offs are consistent with observed successional dynamics of evergreen and deciduous forests at three sites spanning the temperate to boreal zones.

Abstract:The rapid light response of electron transport rate (ETRR), obtained from chlorophyll fluorescence parameters by short illumination periods (10–30 s) at each light level, can provide a rapid and easy measurement of photosynthetic light response in plants. However, the relationship between ETRR and the steady-state light response of CO2 exchange rate (AS) of terrestrial plants has not been studied in detail. In this study, we compared the ETRR and AS for five woody and four fern species with different light and/or water adaptations. Under well-watered conditions, a constant temperature (25 °C) and with stomatal conductance (gs) not being a main limiting factor for photosynthesis, ETRR and AS were closely related, even when merging data for regression analysis for a species grown under different light conditions and measured under different light intensity and air humidity. However, when Alnus formosana was treated with low soil water and air humidity, because of the decrease in AS mainly due to stomatal closure, the ETRR–AS relation was not so close. In addition, at both 100 and 2000 μmol m−2 s−1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), ETRR and AS were significantly correlated within a plant group (i.e., woody plants and ferns) regardless of the broad difference in AS due to different species or environmental factors. The results indicate that the relationship between the ETRR and AS is varied by species. We concluded that 1) ETRR could reflect the variation in AS at each irradiance level within a species under well-watered conditions and 2) ETRR at 100 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD (as the efficiency of light capture) or 2000 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD (as a maximum photosynthetic parameter) could be used to compare the photosynthetic capacity within a plant group, such as woody plants and ferns.
Plant economics spectrum governs leaf nitrogen and phosphorus resorption in subtropical transitional forests

Abstract:Background: Leaf nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) resorption is a fundamental adaptation strategy for plant nutrient conservation. However, the relative roles that environmental factors and plant functional traits play in regulating N and P resorption remain largely unclear, and little is known about the underlying mechanism of plant functional traits affecting nutrient resorption. Here, we measured leaf N and P resorption and 13 plant functional traits of leaf, petiole, and twig for 101 representative broad-leaved tree species in our target subtropical transitional forests. We integrated these multiple functional traits into the plant economics spectrum (PES). We further explored whether and how elevation-related environmental factors and these functional traits collectively control leaf N and P resorption. Results: We found that deciduous and evergreen trees exhibited highly diversified PES strategies, tending to be acquisitive and conservative, respectively. The effects of PES, rather than of environmental factors, dominated leaf N and P resorption patterns along the elevational gradient. Specifically, the photosynthesis and nutrient recourse utilization axis positively affected N and P resorption for both deciduous and evergreen trees, whereas the structural and functional investment axis positively affected leaf N and P resorption for evergreen species only. Specific leaf area and green leaf nutrient concentrations were the most influential traits driving leaf N and P resorption. Conclusions: Our study simultaneously elucidated the relative contributions of environmental factors and plant functional traits to leaf N and P resorption by including more representative tree species than previous studies, expanding our understanding beyond the relatively well-studied tropical and temperate forests. We highlight that prioritizing the fundamental role of traits related to leaf resource capture and defense contributes to the monitoring and modeling of leaf nutrient resorption. Therefore, we need to integrate PES effects on leaf nutrient resorption into the current nutrient cycling model framework to better advance our general understanding of the consequences of shifting tree species composition for nutrient cycles across diverse forests.
Variation in leaf dark respiration among C3 and C4 grasses is associated with use of different substrates

Abstract:Measurements of respiratory properties have often been made at a single time point either during daytime using dark-adapted leaves or during night-time. The influence of the day-night cycle on respiratory metabolism has received less attention but is crucial to understand photosynthesis and photorespiration. Here, we examined how CO2- and O2-based rates of leaf dark respiration (Rdark) differed between midday (after 30-minute dark adaptation) and midnight in eight C3 and C4 grasses. We used these data to calculate the respiratory quotient (RQ; ratio of CO2 release to O2 uptake), and assessed relationships between Rdark and leaf metabolome. Rdark was higher at midday than midnight, especially in C4 species. The day-night difference in Rdark was more evident when expressed on a CO2 than O2 basis, with the RQ being higher at midday than midnight in all species, except in rice (Oryza sativa). Metabolomic analyses showed little correlation of Rdark or RQ with leaf carbohydrates (sucrose, glucose, fructose or starch) but strong multivariate relationships with other metabolites. The results suggest that rates of Rdark and differences in RQ were determined by several concurrent CO2-producing and O2-consuming metabolic pathways, not only the tricarboxylic acid cycle (organic acids utilisation), but also the pentose phosphate pathway, galactose metabolism, and secondary metabolism. As such, Rdark was time-, type- (C3/C4) and species-dependent, due to the use of different substrates.

Nighttime Temperature and Optimal Photosynthetic Capacity over the Past Fortnight Jointly Control the Acclimation of Leaf Respiration

Abstract:Leaf dark respiration (Rd) accounts for approximately 50% of plant respiration. The acclimation of plant respiration to temperature weakens the positive feedback to global warming. Most existing land surface models (LSMs) adopt an empirical leaf respiration scheme with a constant Rd25 (leaf dark respiration rate at 25°C) for each vegetation type, since there is no acceptable theory of Rd acclimation and how it varies temporally and spatially. Here we propose that Rd25 adjusts to prior nighttime temperature (Tnight) to maintain the ratio of Rd to photosynthesis capacity (Vcmax) approximately constant. To test this hypothesis and explore the time scale of acclimation, we predict Rd25 over different time windows and evaluate these predictions using data from 14 sites from two datasets (Boreal Forest Warming at an Ecotone in Danger (B4WarmED) experiment and Leaf Carbon Exchange dataset (LCE)), one of which provides measurements through time and the other across spatial gradients. Predictions that account for the combined effects of Vcmax and Tnight have better predictive power for all species (mean R2=0.4) than considering the effect of one factor alone. Predictions of acclimation on different timescales show that Vcmax and Tnight averaged over the past fortnight explain the most variation in observed Rd25. These results could provide an alternative solution to the leaf respiration schemes used in LSMs.
Patterns and Controls of Light Use Efficiency in Four Contrasting Forest Ecosystems in Yunnan, Southwest China

Abstract:Ecosystem light use efficiency (LUE) is a critical parameter in estimating CO2 uptake by vegetation from climatological and satellite data. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics and biophysical regulations of ecosystem-level LUE are not well understood, resulting in large uncertainties in the estimation of gross primary productivity (GPP) using LUE-based models. In this study, we used eddy covariance to explore spatiotemporal variations and controls of LUE in four contrasting forest ecosystems (savanna, tropical rainforest, subtropical evergreen forest, and subalpine coniferous forest). Based on 27 site years of data, we found that (1) the multiyear mean LUE was 0.063, 0.251, 0.247, and 0.140g C mol photon(-1) in the four contrasting ecosystems, respectively; (2) the LUE in the wet season (May-October) was higher than that in the dry season in all studied ecosystems; (3) the leaf area index controlled GPP and LUE significantly and explained 74%, 29%, 54%, and 36% of the variation in GPP and 51%, 19%, 41%, and 54% of the variation in LUE in the four contrasting ecosystems, respectively; (4) path analysis revealed the critical roles of GPP and vapor pressure deficit in controlling LUE in these four forest ecosystems; and (5) under warming scenarios, LUE may decrease in savanna but increase in the other three ecosystems, while decreasing precipitation (P) may reduce LUE in the ecosystems studied. This study improves our understanding of the influence of biophysical factors on LUE and demonstrates how LUE changes with variations in temperature, soil moisture, and leaf area index, thereby improving estimations of large-scale carbon exchange/cycling.

Abstract:SUMMARY The worldwide leaf economics spectrum relates leaf lifespan (LL) to leaf dry mass per unit area (LMA) 1 . By combining three well-supported principles 2-4 , we show that an isometric relationship between these two quantities maximizes the leaf’s net carbon gain. This theory predicts a spectrum of equally competent LMA-LL combinations in any given environment, and how their optimal ratio varies across environments. By analysing two large, independent leaf-trait datasets for woody species 1,5 , we provide quantitative empirical support for the predicted dependencies of LL on LMA and environment in evergreen plants, and for the distinct predicted dependencies of LMA on light, temperature, growing-season length and aridity in evergreen and deciduous plants. We thereby resolve the long-standing question of why deciduous LMA tends to increase (with increasing LL) towards the equator, while evergreen LMA and LL decrease 6 . We also show how the statistical distribution of LMA within communities can be modelled as an outcome of environmental selection on the global pool of species with diverse values of LMA and LL.
The Leaf Economics Spectrum and its Underlying Physiological and Anatomical Principles

Abstract:Large variations are found in leaf morphology and physiology across species in nature, reflecting diversity in carbon fixation and growth strategies. These variations in leaf traits are not random; rather, they are tightly coordinated with each other. Leaf traits can be expressed per leaf dry mass or per leaf area. A leaf-mass basis reflects leaf economics, i.e., revenues and expenditures per unit investment of biomass, while a leaf-area basis reflects fluxes in relation to surfaces. Leaf N and P concentrations, and photosynthetic and respiration rates – all considered on a mass basis, are negatively correlated with leaf mass per area (LMA) whilst leaf lifespan is positively correlated with LMA. These correlations are summarized into a single major axis called the “leaf economics spectrum” that runs from “quick-return” to “slow-return” species. On the other hand, correlations among area-based traits are less consistent and less understood in relation to leaf economy. LMA was positively correlated with leaf N content but mostly independent from photosynthetic rates per unit leaf area. Given that N is an essential element in photosynthetic proteins and thus photosynthesis, clarifying the mechanisms why the efficiency of photosynthesis (photosynthesis per unit N) decreases with LMA is a major concern in understanding the correlations among area-based traits in relation to leaf economy. Currently available data suggest that greater amounts of cell wall are required for long-lived leaves, which reduces the efficiency of photosynthesis by lowering (1) the fraction of leaf N invested in photosynthetic proteins and (2) CO2 diffusion rates through thicker and denser mesophyll cell walls. These physiological and structural constraints are a fundamental mechanism underpinning the general correlations among leaf economic traits.

Abstract:The inhibition of foliar respiration by light is a crucial yet often overlooked component in estimating ecosystem respiration. However, current estimations of the light inhibition of ecosystem respiration are biased by ignoring the effects of moisture factors. We developed a novel physics‐constrained machine learning method to quantify the extent of light inhibition (Reli) driven by multiple factors in global ecosystems. Our findings revealed significant seasonal variations in light inhibition rate aligned with vegetation growth. Temperature predominantly influenced variations in Reli, and the temperature‐Reli relationship was regulated by vapor pressure deficit rather than soil water content. A reassessment of global ecosystem respiration revealed that current Earth system models (ESMs) overestimate ecosystem respiration in mid‐to‐high latitude dryland regions, with a global average light inhibition strength of 0.51 (±0.16). Knowledge from this study provides an accurate understanding of light inhibition driven by temperature and moisture coupling in simulating carbon cycle.

Abstract:Tropical and subtropical evergreen broadleaved forests (TEFs) contribute more than one-third of terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP). However, the continental-scale leaf phenology-photosynthesis nexus over TEFs is still poorly understood to date. This knowledge gap hinders most light use efficiency (LUE) models from accurately simulating the GPP seasonality in TEFs. Leaf age is the crucial plant trait to link the dynamics of leaf phenology with GPP seasonality. Thus, here we incorporated the seasonal leaf area index of different leaf age cohorts into a widely used LUE model (i.e., EC-LUE) and proposed a novel leaf age-dependent LUE model (denoted as LA-LUE model). At the site level, the LA-LUE model (average R2 = .59, average root-mean-square error [RMSE] = 1.23 gC m-2 day-1) performs better than the EC-LUE model in simulating the GPP seasonality across the nine TEFs sites (average R2 = .18; average RMSE = 1.87 gC m-2 day-1). At the continental scale, the monthly GPP estimates from the LA-LUE model are consistent with FLUXCOM GPP data (R2 = .80; average RMSE = 1.74 gC m-2 day-1), and satellite-based GPP data retrieved from the global Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) based solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) product (GOSIF) (R2 = .64; average RMSE = 1.90 gC m-2 day-1) and the reconstructed TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument SIF dataset using machine learning algorithms (RTSIF) (R2 = .78; average RMSE = 1.88 gC m-2 day-1). Typically, the estimated monthly GPP not only successfully represents the unimodal GPP seasonality near the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, but also captures well the bimodal GPP seasonality near the Equator. Overall, this study for the first time integrates the leaf age information into the satellite-based LUE model and provides a feasible implementation for mapping the continental-scale GPP seasonality over the entire TEFs.

Abstract:Current theoretical models for tree relative growth rate (RGR) have considered physiological processes based on carbon economy and nutrient-productivity relations, but have not taken water relations into account. According to the ecological energetics and Lockhart equation theories, if more energy is needed to maintain water balance in plants, less energy should be invested towards growth, resulting in a trade-off between growth and drought tolerance. Leaf pressure–volume (PV) curve parameters are the best recognised classical indicators of plant drought tolerance, however, the relationships between tree growth and leaf PV parameters have rarely been investigated in forest communities. In the study, we selected two evergreen (Lithocarpus glaber, Cyclobalanopsis oxyodon) and two deciduous species (Quercus serrata, Platycarya strobilacea) that dominate northern subtropical forests on Mt. Shennongjia, central China. For each species, we selected individuals at different developmental stages (growth vs. mature stage), and measured the relative growth rate of diameter at breast height (RGRDBH) and leaf PV curve parameters, including leaf saturated osmotic potential (Ψsat), maximum bulk elastic modulus (εmax), turgor loss osmotic potential (Ψtlp) and leaf water capacity (Cleaf). Correlation analysis and structural equation models (SEM) were applied to explore the relationships between RGRDBH and PV parameters. The results showed that: 1) at both stages, RGRDBH was positively correlated with Ψsat, but not with Ψtlp and Cleaf; 2) εmax was negatively related to RGRDBH at the growth stage; 3) the relationship between PV parameters and RGRDBH was determined mainly by inter-specific difference; 4) SEM showed that both Ψtlp and Ψsat were affected by εmax; and 5) due to the interaction between the PV parameters, Ψsat and εmax had a direct effect on RGRDBH only during the growth stage. Our results showed that the functional/structural coordination between PV parameters adjusted the RGRDBH of trees, and among different species, there exists a tradeoff between energy allocation for drought tolerance and growth. These findings can be applied to improve RGR models, and show how forests respond to warm-induced drought, which is a major threat to global forests in a future warmer climate.
Responses of leaf structure and photosynthetic properties to intra-canopy light gradients: a common garden test with four broadleaf deciduous angiosperm and seven evergreen conifer tree species

Abstract:Spectra of leaf traits in northern temperate forest canopies reflect major differences in leaf longevity between evergreen conifers and deciduous broadleaf angiosperms, as well as plastic modifications caused by within-crown shading. We investigated (1) whether long-lived conifer leaves exhibit similar intra-canopy plasticity as short-lived broadleaves, and (2) whether global interspecific relationships between photosynthesis, nitrogen, and leaf structure identified for sun leaves adequately describe leaves differentiated in response to light gradients. We studied structural and photosynthetic properties of intra-tree sun and shade foliage in adult trees of seven conifer and four broadleaf angiosperm species in a common garden in Poland. Shade leaves exhibited lower leaf mass-per-area (LMA) than sun leaves; however, the relative difference was smaller in conifers than in broadleaves. In broadleaves, LMA was correlated with lamina thickness and tissue density, while in conifers, it was correlated with thickness but not density. In broadleaves, but not in conifers, reduction of lamina thickness was correlated with a thinner palisade layer. The more conservative adjustment of conifer leaves could result from a combination of phylogenetic constraints, contrasting leaf anatomies and shoot geometries, but also from functional requirements of long-lived foliage. Mass-based nitrogen concentration (Nmass) was similar between sun and shade leaves, and was lower in conifers than in deciduous broadleaved species. Given this, the smaller LMA in shade corresponded with a lower area-based N concentration (Narea). In evergreen conifers, LMA and Narea were less powerful predictors of area-based photosynthetic rate (Amax(area)) in comparison with deciduous broadleaved angiosperms. Multiple regression for sun and shade leaves showed that, in each group, Amax(mass) was related to Nmass but not to LMA, whereas LMA became a significant codeterminant of Amax(mass) in analysis combining both groups. Thus, a fundamental mass-based relationship between photosynthesis, nitrogen, and leaf structure reported previously also exists in a dataset combining within-crown and across-functional type variation.

Abstract:Leaf nutrient resorption is one of the important mechanisms for nutrient conservation in plants. Element stoichiometry is crucial to characterizing nutrient limitations and terrestrial ecosystem function. Here, we use nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) resorption efficiencies (NRE and PRE) and their stoichiometry to evaluate the response patterns of leaf nutrient resorption efficiency (NuRE) to plant functional groups, species traits, climate, and soil nutrients on the global scale. In light of the findings from the global data set of published literature on N and P resorption by woody plants, we revisit the commonly held views that: The strong N fixation ability of N-fixers weakened the NRE, which was consistent with the general views. The NuRE was linearly negatively correlated with plant growth rate. The higher NuRE of evergreen species than deciduous plants revealed how leaf life span constrains nutrient conservation. From the perspective of NRE, PRE and their ratios, woody plants were limited by P in the tropical zone and the limiting nutrient gradually transformed into N in the temperate zone (23.43-66.57°). The NuRE of woody plants in the frigid zone was the largest than that of others implied that low temperature may limit the nutrient absorption by plant roots, thereby enhancing the retranslocation of nutrients by senesced leaves. Furthermore, Akaike weights analysis found that mean annual precipitation (MAP) and temperature (MAT), N-fixers, soil nutrients, and leaf life span have significant effects on nutrient resorption patterns, sequentially. Overall, these results showed that the plasticity of plant nutrient resorption patterns was strongly sensitive to plant functional groups and soil nutrients, but the regularity of NuRE on a global scale was controlled by temperature and precipitation. And the resorption stoichiometry pattern better interprets plant nutrient limitation and the synergy effect of N and P in plant and soil on multiple scales.

Abstract:Rising temperatures pose a threat to the stability of climate regulation by carbon metabolism in subtropical forests. Although the effects of temperature on leaf carbon metabolism traits in sun-exposed leaves are well understood, there is limited knowledge about its impacts on shade leaves and the implications for ecosystem-climate feedbacks. In this study, we measured temperature response curves of photosynthesis and respiration for 62 woody species in summer (including both evergreen and deciduous species) and 20 evergreen species in winter. The aim was to uncover the temperature dependence of carbon metabolism in both sun and shade leaves in subtropical forests. Our findings reveal that shade had no significant effects on the mean optimum photosynthetic temperatures (TOpt) or temperature range (T90). However, there were decreases observed in mean stomatal conductance, mean area-based photosynthetic rates at TOpt and 25 °C, as well as mean area-based dark respiration rates at 25 °C in both evergreen and deciduous species. Moreover, the respiration-temperature sensitivity (Q10) of sun leaves was higher than that of shade leaves in winter, with the reverse being true in summer. Leaf economics spectrum traits, such as leaf mass per area, and leaf concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus across species, proved to be good predictors of TOpt, T90, mass-based photosynthetic rate at TOpt, and mass-based photosynthetic and respiration rate at 25 °C. However, Q10 was poorly predicted by these leaf economics spectrum traits except for shade leaves in winter. Our results suggest that model estimates of carbon metabolism in multilayered subtropical forest canopies do not necessitate independent parameterization of T90 and TOpt temperature responses in sun and shade leaves. Nevertheless, a deeper understanding and quantification of canopy variations in Q10 responses to temperature are necessary to confirm the generality of temperature-carbon metabolism trait responses and enhance ecosystem model estimates of carbon dynamics under future climate warming.

Abstract:Light use efficiency(LUE)represents the efficiency of vegetation in converting solar energy to biomass through interception/absorption and photosynthesis.It is an important index in quantifying the solar energy utility of vegetation in photosynthesis,and the theoretical basis in large scale monitoring vegetation productivity based on remote sensing.The general method of determining LUE is to estimate the plant biomass by harvest on plot scale,and then,a value of LUE is given as a ratio of biomass and observed solar energy for a whole year or a growth season.Eddy covariance technique is regarded as a unique method which can directly observe the flux of CO2,H2O and heat between atmosphere and vegetation,making it possible to estimate LUE on large scale from canopy to landscape.LUE has specific spatial heterogeneity and temporal variability,because of the differences of vegetation and climate.On global scale,the inversion simulation by coupling atmospheric CO2 observation,remote sensing and atmospheric radiation transfers model can confirm the geographic variance of LUE of net primary productivity.There are many factors affecting the spatio-temporal pattern of LUE,mainly including plant physiological(such as leaf form and ribulose diphosphatecarboxylase content)and environmental factors.In order to give a good answer on the spatio-temporal pattern and its fluctuation of LUE,the crossing-scale modeling based on flux observation and model analysis may be an important research field in the future.
Seasonality of Leaf Area Index and Photosynthetic Capacity for Better Estimation of Carbon and Water Fluxes in Evergreen Conifer Forests

Abstract:Leaf area index (LAI), defined as one half the total leaf area per unit ground area, and Vcmax, representing the maximal carboxylation rate of leaves, are two most significant parameters used in most Terrestrial Biosphere Models (TBMs). The ability of TBMs to simulate gross primary productivity (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET) for evergreen needle-leave forests (ENF) can be significantly hampered by uncertainties in LAI and Vcmax. Remotely sensed (RS) LAI for ENF is generally underestimated in winter, early spring and late autumn. Although constant Vcmax throughout the growing season is often used in TBMs for GPP and ET modeling, it could vary significantly under leaf aging and stressed conditions. There were recent studies that apply seasonal leaf chlorophyll constraints on GPP modeling for croplands and deciduous forests, but little attention is given to the influence of the seasonality of either LAI or Vcmax on GPP or ET estimations for the ENF biome. In this study, we pay special attention to this biome, with the purpose of investigating if the representations of seasonal LAI and Vmax variations are essential in TBMs. To serve this purpose, the University of Toronto LAI product Version 2 was corrected for its seasonal variation using leaf lifespan and in-situ measurements at eight ENF sites in Canada. Seasonal Vcmax variation was derived from the MERIS Terrestrial Chlorophyll Index (MTCI) through downscaling it to the leaf level using a scheme with a general vertical nitrogen distribution within the canopy. Leaf chlorophyll content (LCC) is thus derived from MTCI and converted to Vcmax using empirical equations. Four model cases with and without considerations of the seasonal LAI and Vcmax variations were tested and compared. Validation against eddy covariance measurements indicates that the case with both LAI and Vcmax variations produced the highest R-2, lowest root mean square error (RMSE) and lowest mean absolute error (MAE) for both GPP and ET simulations, and thus outperforms all other cases without considering the variations or with consideration of one of the variations only. In this best case, the simulated daily GPP yields R-2 of 0.91, RMSE of 0.91 g C m(-2) and MAE of 0.65 g C m(-2), while the simulated daily ET yields R-2 of 0.8, RMSE of 0.52 mm and MAE of 0.34 mm. Most improvements were found in spring and autumn. Not only the correlations between the seasonal trajectories of model simulation and observation were improved, but also the annual total GPP and ET were more accurately estimated. The smallest mean absolute relative bias to eddy covariance measurements is 9% for GPP and 15% for ET, both were found in the best case. Moreover, improvements in GPP were more pronounced than in ET. Our results highlight the significance of considering both seasonal structural and physiological characteristics of leaves in TBMs. Considering the important role that evergreen coniferous forests play in global terrestrial ecosystems, global simulations of GPP and ET in space and time can benefit from the proper representation of seasonal variations in canopy structure and leaf physiology as represented by LAI and Vcmax, respectively.
