Abstract:Antibiotic pollution as a hot topic of global concern is greatly sought after due to the adverse effect on ecosystems and human health stemming from the excessive use and deficient management. Achieving detection of antibiotics residues in water is extremely crucial but remains challenging. Herein, four metal-organic frameworks 1-4 with different luminescent behaviors were demonstrated by variation of the systematic rigidity and assemble form. To fabricate the solid dual-emission probe, the gust dye 4-(4-diethylaminostyryl)-1-methylpyridinium (DEASM) is successfully encapsulated into a non-porous flexible MOF 4 ascribed to the dynamic breathing effect. The resulting composite displays the dual-emission behavior with the color linearly tuned from green to red and ratiometric luminescent response to pH with controllable sensitivity, supported by dimensionality dependent energy transfer. Furthermore, 4 superset of DEASM exhibits sensitive and selective sensing performances towards nitrofurazone and could be integrated into a logic operation. Thus, our study may bring new perspective for the design of dye encapsulated MOF dual-emission ratiometric sensor to monitor antibiotic in water.
Rapid Removal of Azophloxine Via Catalytic Degradation by A Novel Heterogeneous Catalyst under Visible Light

Abstract:Azo dyes are the most widely used synthetic dyes in the printing and dyeing process. However, the discharge of untreated azo dyes poses a potential threat to aqueous ecosystems and human health. Herein, we fabricated a novel heterogeneous catalyst: activated-carbon-fiber-supported ferric alginate (FeAlg-ACF). Together with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and visible light, this photocatalytic oxidation system was used to remove an azo dye—azophloxine. The results indicated that the proposed catalytic oxidation system can remove 100% of azophloxine within 24 min, while under the same system, the removal rates were only 92% and 84% when ferric alginate was replaced with ferric citrate and ferric oxalate, respectively, which showed the superiority of FeAlg-ACF. The degradation of azophloxine is achieved by the active radicals (SO4•− and •OH) released from PMS and persistent free radicals from activated carbon fiber. Moreover, due to ferric alginate’s highly intrinsic photosensitivity, visible radiation can further enhance the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) processes. After 24 min of treatment, the total organic carbon of the azophloxine solution (50 μmol/L) decreased from 1.82 mg/L to 79.3 μg/L and the concentration of nitrate ions increased from 0.3 mg/L to 8.6 mg/L. That is, up to 93.5% of azophloxine molecules were completely degraded into inorganic compounds. Consequently, potential secondary contamination by intermediate organic products during catalytic degradation was prohibited. The azophloxine removal ratio was kept almost constant after seven cycles, indicating the recyclability and longevity of this system. Furthermore, the azophloxine removal was still promising at high concentrations of Cl−, HCO3−, and CO32−. Therefore, our proposed system is potentially effective at removing dye pollutants from seawater. It provides a feasible method for the development of efficient and environmentally friendly PMS activation technology combined with FeAlg-ACF, which has significant academic and application value.
Ultrasound-assisted formation of composite materials from fish scale waste hydroxyapatite in the presence of gamma-irradiated chitosan for the removal of malachite green

Abstract:The fish processing sector produces millions of tons of trash annually-a biologically dangerous substance that could eventually turn into a source of pathogenic contamination. This work successfully shows how to extract tilapia fish scale hydroxyapatite with ultrasonic assistance and modify it using gamma-irradiated chitosan to remove malachite green from water samples. The prepared adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and dynamic light scattering. Isotherm modeling was employed to investigate the sorption process of malachite green. The results revealed that the adsorbent could be used to remove malachite green in aqueous media, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 285.7 mg g-1. A pseudo-second-order model was then fitted to the kinetic data. The R 2 value of 0.9851 obtained indicated that the adsorption behavior was consistent with the Langmuir model. Analysis of the computed thermodynamic parameters revealed that the adsorption of the dye was a spontaneous and exothermic process. Proper waste management practices not only ensure environmental responsibility but also contribute to positive community relations by minimizing the impact on the local environment.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel approach to addressing environmental issues by developing fish-scale carbon nanoparticles (FSCNPs) with a wide range of colors from discarded fish scales. The process involves hydrothermally synthesizing raw tamban (Sardinella) fish scales sourced from Universal Canning, Inc. in Zamboanga City, Philippines. The optimization of the synthesis was achieved using the response surface methodology with a Box–Behnken design. The resulting FSCNPs exhibited unique structural and chemical properties akin to carbonized polymer dots, enhancing their versatility. The solid-state fluorescence of these nanoparticles can be modulated by varying their concentration in a polyvinylpyrrolidone matrix, yielding colors such as blue, green, yellow, and red-orange with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates of (0.23, 0.38), (0.32, 0.43), (0.37, 0.43), and (0.46, 0.48), respectively. An analysis of the luminescence mechanism highlights cross-linking emissions, aggregation-induced emissions, and non-covalent interactions, which contribute to concentration-dependent fluorescence and tunable emission colors. These optical characteristics suggest that FSCNPs have significant potential for diverse applications, particularly in opto-electronic devices.

Abstract:In the current work, fish scale carbon quantum dots (FS-CQDs) were prepared from grass fish scales as precursors via a one-step hydrothermal approach to detect malachite green. The size distribution of FS-CQDs was uniform with an average particle diameter of 4.70 nm, which exhibited emission at 415 nm upon excitation at 310 nm. The FS-CQDs were demonstrated to selectively react with malachite green, leading to the fluorescence quenching effect. The established fluorescence nanosensor showed malachite green detection in the linear range of 0–150 μM, with the limit of detection (LOD) of 4.4 μM. The quenching type is static quenching, and the interaction was mainly driven by van der Waals interactions and the hydrogen bond, which were studied using the Stern–Volmer equation and thermodynamic analysis. Furthermore, the sensor was applied for the measurement of malachite green in real water samples and turbot with acceptable recovery of 91.6–115.5%. The utilization of fish scales in this study not only provided a new way of utilization of aquatic by-products, but also generated a novel alternative fluorescence nanosensor for the sensing field.

Radish residue carbon dots-based novel starch/chitosan film with high antioxidant, biocompatibility, and antibacterial activities for salmon fillets' active packaging

Abstract:The corruption of refrigerated marine fish results in global economic losses exceeding 25 billion euros annually. However, conventional preservatives present challenges, including singular functionality, potential toxicity, and high cost. In response, we developed multifunctional, safe, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly carbon dots derived from radish residues (R-CDs) by using the one-pot hydrothermal method. The surface of R-CDs is enriched with hydroxyl groups, conferring broad-spectrum antioxidant and antibacterial characteristics. R-CDs exhibited a notable 72.92 % inhibition rate on lipid peroxidation, surpassing the effectiveness of vitamin C (46 %). Additionally, R-CDs demonstrated impressive scavenging rates of 93.8 % for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radicals and 99.36 % for 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid-free radicals. In combating spoilage bacteria such as Aeromonas sobria and Hafnia alvei, R-CDs disrupted cell structures and influenced intracellular substance content. Importantly, co-cultivation with R-CDs showed no significant cytotoxicity. Further incorporating R-CDs into films using starch and chitosan (S/CS/R-CDs films) for efficient and convenient use in salmon fillets preservation. S/CS/R-CDs films effectively inhibited the growth of spoilage bacteria, lipid oxidation, and protein decomposition in salmon fillets, thereby extending shelf life by 4 days. This combination of antioxidant and antibacterial properties in R-CDs, along with the functional films, presents a promising approach for enhancing salmon fillet preservation.

Abstract:Fish scales (FSs) are fishery wastes that can cause environmental pollution. This study aimed to solve this environmental problem. FSs were used as a flame retardant for polymer materials, making them valuable. Fish scales were combined with a commercial flame retardant, ammonium polyphosphate (APP), through synergistic effects to reduce the amount of commercial flame retardant. The use of FSs conforms to the concept of a circular economy and lowers costs by reducing the consumption of APP. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT), pyrolysis kinetics, limiting oxygen index (LOI), the Underwriters Laboratories 94 (UL94) flammability test, scanning election microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used to determine the thermal properties, flame retardant properties, flame retardant mechanism, char morphology, and composition of the composites. The TGA results indicated that the addition of 40% flame retardant raised the char residue from 16.45 wt.% (pure EP) to 36.07 wt.%; IPDT from 685.6 °C (pure EP) to 1143.1°C; LOI from 21% (pure EP) to 30%; and UL94 classification from fail (pure EP) to V-0. These results suggest an increase in char residue, which indicates better protection of the polymer matrix material. The improvements in IPDT, LOI, and UL94 classification, which indicate greater thermal stability, lower flammability (from flammable to fireproof), and higher flammability rating (from fail to V-0), respectively, suggest that the composite material has favorable thermal properties and is less inflammable.

Abstract:The immobilization of catalysts hinders the application of nanosized photocatalysts in wastewater treatment. In this study, a simple method for the preparation of flexible composite non-woven catalysts with a good spectral response is presented. Firstly, the porous g-C3N4 nanosheets containing nitrogen defects (DCN) and sodium alginate (SA) were blended to prepare the casting solution and then coated on the surface of polyester and viscose blend non-woven fabric (NW). Finally, the robust three-dimensional composite non-woven catalyst (DCN@SA/NW) was constructed by cross-linking with CaCl2. The as-prepared samples were characterized by different physicochemical techniques including SEM, EDS, FTIR, Raman, XRD, XPS, and TGA. The photocatalytic degradation of dyes and antibiotics and self-cleaning and antibacterial properties of the catalyst were investigated. The optimal DCN@SA/NW formulation was 2.0 wt.% DCN and 2.0 wt.% SA. The DCN@SA/NW composite efficiently degraded rhodamine (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). Moreover, the synthesized non-woven composite catalyst was easily recycled and remained stable, indicating its promising potential in wastewater treatment. The DCN@SA/NW also exhibited outstanding self-cleaning and antibacterial performance. This study provides an interesting idea for the research and development of immobilized photocatalysts and has great potential in future practical photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:Recently, water-borne fluorescent inks have attracted extensive attention in anti-counterfeiting applications due to their convenient implementation and eco-friendliness. However, due to poor service durability, the latent authorization information from the inks is easily damaged, and even disappears when encountering water. Moreover, most of the existing fluorescent inks are monochromic, toxic, and allergic to skin, thus are unsuitable for their sustainability during real-life applications. Herein, this work presents environment-friendly, durable, and multicolor fluorescent anti-counterfeiting silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs)/sodium alginate (SA) inks. The multicolor SiNPs are synthesized by a one-pot method with defined morphologies and optical properties. Subsequently, SA is employed as the binder to prepare the fluorescent inks with optimized rheological properties. Practicability results show that the SiNPs/SA inks not only exhibit excellent printability, but also impart authentic information with superior covert performance. More notably, spraying solution of calcium dichloride can further improve fluorescent fastnesses of the SiNPs/SA inks by ionic crosslinking.

Abstract:In this study, low-cost and eco-friendly hydroxyapatite (HA) minerals were extracted from scales of Tilapia fish (Oreochromis mossambicus). After calcination, fish-scale extracted powder was further confirmed to be HA by X-ray diffraction with mean particle size of 5.96 μm determined by particle size analyzer. The calcined powder was utilized as the raw material and combined with chitosan (CS) to synthesize composite scaffolds by freeze casting and cross-linking. Mercury porosimetry results showed that the scaffolds possessed hierarchical porous structure. Microstructural features characterized by SEM revealed unidirectional channel structures with channel sizes ranged from 10 to 100 μm and 1 to 50 μm for scaffolds freeze-casted at 2 ℃/min and 5 ℃/min cooling rates, respectively. The adsorption kinetics of HA/CS composite scaffolds with varying channel sizes were investigated by both batch and fixed-bed processes with different Pb(П) initial concentrations (100 and 1000 mg/L). The adsorption capability was optimized by tuning the cooling rates and the maximum adsorption amount could reach 75-570 mg/g in batch process and 94 mg/g in fixed bed process. In summary, the HA/CS composite scaffolds showed great capability to remove heavy metal ions from waste water and their tunable channel sizes could be applied in suitable fields under both statistic and flowing conditions.
Advanced Marine Antifouling Hydrogels Based on 7-Amino-4-methylcoumarin Fluorescence Driven by Rare-Earth Phosphorescence

Abstract:At present, there are very few reports on the combination of phosphorescence and fluorescence in the field of pollution prevention. A composite antibacterial agent was designed to store energy by using the phosphorescence effect of rare earth oxides, emit light at night, and stimulate 7-amino-4-methylcoumarin to produce fluorescence and prevent algae from adhering. When complexed with PVA, it exhibited excellent characteristics as an all-weather autocatalytic phosphorescence-fluorescence antifouling hydrogel. The rare earth phosphorescent powder was prepared in a high-temperature tube furnace, coated with SiO2 on the surface for waterproofing, and then grafted with 7-amino-4-methylcoumarin to obtain a composite antibacterial agent with a phosphorescence-fluorescence effect. The composite antibacterial agent was added with PVA to obtain a hydrogel, which exhibited bactericidal rates of more than 99.98% against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria after 48 h. The results of fluorescence staining showed that the coverage rate of dead bacteria reached 41.6% after 24 h. The tensile strength of the antifouling hydrogel is up to 1.49 MPa, which is strong enough for real marine environments. Moreover, the algae coverage area of the composite hydrogel under natural light was only 2.7%, representing a 10-fold reduction compared with the control. The antifouling hydrogel has good antipollution and algae suppression performance, which is due to the fact that the rare earth phosphorescent powder when exposed to sunlight can provide a light source to stimulate 7-amino-4-methylcoumarin fluorescence at night and thereby prevent algae adhesion. After testing in the marine field and the real sea test when wrapped in a fishing net, the excellent antifouling performance was demonstrated. The functional hydrogel has great application potential in the protection of seawater-exposed structures, such as bridges and bay ports.
Super Adhesive Fluorescent Materials for Encrypted Messages, Underwater Leak Repair and Their Potential Application in Fluorescent Tattoos

Abstract:Achieving high‐performance luminescence for underwater bonding remains a significant challenge in materials science. This study addressed this issue by synthesizing a luminescent material based on an aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) monomer and copolymerizing it with lipoic acid (LA) to create an AIE supramolecular polymer. The resulting copolymer exhibited strong fluorescence under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at 365 nm due to the AIE of TPEE and enabled underwater adhesion. The P(LA‐TPEE) polymer demonstrated potential for digital encryption and decryption of quick response (QR) codes underwater. Furthermore, it could dissolve well in anhydrous ethanol, producing an environment‐friendly and super waterproof adhesive. Most notably, the P(LA‐TPEE) solution could be sprayed on human skin, creating an invisible tattoo that only became visible under UV light due to the hydrogen bond (H‐bond) and π‐π structures. This smart tattoo could be quickly wiped away with alcohol, avoiding the painful and harmful process of tattoo removal. It could also be repeatedly applied to draw the preferred tattoo pattern. This AIE supramolecular polymer showed great potential in underwater adhesion and repair, underwater message encryption, and non‐toxic and painless invisible tattooing. Dual-functional marine algal carbon-based materials with highly efficient dye removal and disinfection control

Abstract:The design and simple, green preparation of dual-functional materials for the decontamination of both hazardous dyes and pathogenic microorganisms from wastewater remain challenging currently. Herein, a promising marine algal carbon-based material (named C-SA/SP) with both highly efficient dye adsorptive and antibacterial properties was fabricated based on the incorporation of sodium alginate and a low dose of silver phosphate via a facile and eco-friendly approach. The structure, removal of malachite green (MG) and congo red (CR), and their antibacterial performance were studied, and the adsorption mechanism was further interpreted by the statistical physics models, besides the classic models. The results show that the maximum simulated adsorption capacity for MG reached 2798.27 mg/g, and its minimal inhibit concentration for Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) was 0.4 mg/mL and 0.2 mg/mL, respectively. The mechanistic study suggests that silver phosphate exerted the effects of catalytic carbon formation and pore formation, while reducing the electronegativity of the material as well, thus improving its dye adsorptive performance. Moreover, the MG adsorption onto C-SA/SP showed vertical orientation and a multi-molecular way, and its adsorption sites were involved in the adsorption process with the increase of temperature. Overall, the study indicates that the as-made dual-functional materials have good applied prospects for water remediation.

Abstract:Abstract Electronic waste is a global issue brought about by the short lifespan of electronics. Viable methods to relieve the inundated disposal system by repurposing the enormous amount of electronic waste remain elusive. Inspired by the need for sustainable solutions, this study resulted in a multifaceted approach to upcycling compact discs. The once-ubiquitous plates can be transformed into stretchable and flexible biosensors. Our experiments and advanced prototypes show that effective, innovative biosensors can be developed at a low-cost. An affordable craft-based mechanical cutter allows pre-determined patterns to be scored on the recycled metal, an essential first step for producing stretchable, wearable electronics. The active metal harvested from the compact discs was inert, cytocompatible, and capable of vital biopotential measurements. Additional studies examined the material’s resistive emittance, temperature sensing, real-time metabolite monitoring performance, and moisture-triggered transience. This sustainable approach for upcycling electronic waste provides an advantageous research-based waste stream that does not require cutting-edge microfabrication facilities, expensive materials, and high-caliber engineering skills.

Abstract:Fish waste is commonly thrown away as discarded garbage from the fish processing sector, contributing to environmental pollution and resource depletion. Due to its variable decay rate and pungent odor, fish waste poses an ecological threat. Thus, effective management strategies are required to minimize its impact. In this present study, we have utilized the Nemipterus japonicus fish scale as a sustainable and greener precursor to synthesizing carbon quantum dots (C-QDs) and hydroxyapatite nanostructures (HA-Ns) through a biorefinery strategy. The prepared C-QDs and HA-Ns crystalline phase and structural properties were studied using X-ray diffractometer and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. TEM observations clearly indicate that C-QDs possessed a spherical size of 10–35 nm. Also, HA-Ns have irregular morphological features with a 45–60 nm diameter. The impact of fish waste-derived C-QDs and HA-Ns on colon cells was assessed using in vitro assays. According to the cell viability results, around 18% and 14% of cell death were found in 400 μg/mL of C-QDs and HA-Ns exposure, respectively. Interestingly, these nanostructures do not cause cellular and nuclear morphological changes in colon cells. Additionally, the mitochondria membrane potential and ROS level were not changed significantly in C-QDs and HA-Ns cells compared to untreated cells. Overall, these study results revealed that C-QDs and HA-Ns are cytocompatible and non-toxic, which can potentially be applied in biomedical or food industry applications.

Abstract:The high-value-added exploitation of biomass is a critical way to supply new carbon nanomaterials for “green resources."Biomass-derived carbon dots (CDs) are regarded as highly promising fluorescent nanomaterials. Carbon dots (FS-CDs) were prepared in this study using a simple solvothermal process, with fish scales serving as the carbon source. The FS-CDs were found to be evenly distributed, displaying an average diameter of 2.52 nm. Additionally, they demonstrated excitation-dependent emission and exhibited a notably high quantum yield of 31.71%. The high photoluminescence quantum yield in FS-CDs was shown to be associated with the (N, O)-codoped and high content of doped nitrogen, as determined by spectroscopic and microscopic examination in conjunction with the theoretical lattice model. Furthermore, it was discovered that FS-CDs exhibit a notable capacity for fluorescence imaging in zebrafish. This study demonstrates the significant utilization value of fish scales, which expands their potential applications and offers an environmentally friendly, cost-effective, and scalable approach for producing biomass-derived CDs.

Abstract:Dynamic fluorescent patterns that convert external stimulation into intuitive color changes have drawn significant interest in various fields. However, the complex synthesis of materials with multiple emissions and technical barriers in the flexible fabrication of full-color fluorescent patterns hinder their applicability in diverse scenarios. Here, we present a bioinspired dynamic fluorescent pattern fabricated by femtosecond laser-induced forward transfer (FsLIFT), inspired by cuttlefish. The elastomeric substrate can contract and expand as muscle fibers of cuttlefish, and the patterned red, green, and blue quantum dot (QD) films can be regarded as pigment cells, achieving bionic preparation of function and morphology similar to cuttlefish. Notably, the fluorescent patterns can be modulated by manipulating strains and excitations. Using this bioinspired strategy, we successfully produced an advanced fluorescent anti-counterfeiting label via FsLIFT, which can only be recognized under specific strain and excitation light conditions. These dynamic fluorescent patterns show broad application potential in anti-counterfeiting, wearable devices, and information encryption.
Green synthesis of fluorescent carbon quantum dots from bagasse: inhibition of calcium sulphate scales

Abstract:The conversion of biomass waste generated in large amounts to value-added materials and energy can reduce environmental pollution, atmospheric CO2 emissions and waste disposal costs in a circular economy. Chemicals, such as strong acids and organophosphates, commonly used for industrial water treatment, are harmful and cause environmental pollution. Therefore, safe and eco-friendly water treatment agents must be developed. In this study, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were successfully synthesised to be used as scale inhibitors via a green and simple one-step hydrothermal method using bagasse (an agricultural waste) as the carbon source. The structure of the CQDs was characterised via TEM, XRD and Raman analysis. FTIR and XPS results demonstrated that the CQDs surface contained abundant oxygen-containing groups. Fluorescence spectra confirmed that the CQDs have excellent stability and are promising for online monitoring of self-dose. The scale inhibition efficiency of CaSO4 scale at CQDs dosage of 17.5 mg/L measured using the static scale inhibition method reached 100%, which is better than that obtained in the case of traditional scale inhibitors. Moreover, the CQDs exhibited an outstanding scale inhibition effect at higher temperatures and in strongly alkaline environments. The scale inhibition effect of CQDs was further verified using XRD and SEM. In summary, the CQDs obtained from bagasse are fluorescent and environmentally friendly scale inhibitors, with promising applications in industrial water treatment.

Abstract:Microbial biomass, as an environmentally friendly resource, has attracted considerable attention as a green biomaterial for the production of unique and functionalised CDs; however, further exploration is required to characterise CDs derived from bacteria. In this study, a green biomaterial (fluorescence CDs-HS18) was successfully synthesised via a hydrothermal method from Ureibacillus thermosphaericus HS-18 specimens isolated from a hot spring. The prepared CDs-HS18 possess excellent photo-physical properties, outstanding fluorescence capabilities, and high biocompatibility, which make them desirable candidates for multi-mode imaging applications. Our results demonstrate that the prepared CDs can selectively stain the membrane of the biological cells tested and can be rapidly distributed to all parts of the leaf via the veins and intercellular interstitium through transpiration. Additionally, CDs-HS18 are likely to enter the digestive tract of Microworms through ingestion and spread rapidly through the entire body and may finally be excreted through the anus. Furthermore, the rapid and highly selective detection platform based on CDs-HS18 exhibited an excellent linear response for Cr6+ between 0 and 9 μM, with a detection limit of 36 nM. This research will expand the understanding of the characteristics of green biomaterials derived from bacteria and widen the application scope of hot spring resources.
