Abstract:Introduction Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are rapidly rising in Saudi Arabia, reaching levels similar to those in the Western world. Hence, we aimed to assess the prevalence of neck, shoulder, and lower back pains (musculoskeletal pain, MSP) among students at King Khalid University in Abha, Saudi Arabia. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted at King Khalid University in Abha, Saudi Arabia, from March 2023 to August 2023. Inclusion criteria were: university students aged 18 years and older of both sexes who agreed to participate in the study. The modified Nordic questionnaire was used, which comprised three parts. Results Out of 536 respondents, 337 were women and 199 were men. The average body mass index (BMI) of the study population was 25.3 ± 4.01. In total, 223 (41.60%) had a history of MSDs. Only 232 (43.28%) of the population did regular exercise. According to multiple logistic regression analysis, factors associated with MSDs are mobile device use (with both hands) with a large neck tilt below the horizon line position (OR = 2.276, CI 1.178–4.397, p = 0.014), family history of trauma (OR = 5.450, 95% CI 3.371–8.811, p = 0.000), family history of MSDs (OR = 4.241, 95% CI 2.296–7.835, p = 0.000), coffee consumption (OR = 1.967, CI 1.281–3.020, p = 0.002), and time spent on electronic devices: 1–3 h (OR = 0.252, 95% CI 0.124–0.511, p = 0.0001), 4–6 h (OR = 0.455, 95% CI 0.237–0.873, p = 0.018), and 6–9 h (OR = 0.348, 95% CI 0.184–0.660, p = 0.001). Conclusion The present study concludes that MSP among university students is high. A history of trauma, a family history of MSDs, the hand and neck position when using electronic devices, the amount of time spent using them, and regular exercise are risk factors that are strongly associated with MSP. There is strong evidence to suggest that increasing physical activity plays a significant role in enhancing the functionality of the musculoskeletal (MSK) system and alleviating pain. It is recommended that universities implement educational programs to raise awareness and health screenings about the impact of device usage on MSK health and the benefits of regular exercise.

Abstract:Background: Engagement of university students in sports activities was associated with sports injuries involving the knee. The present study aimed at evaluating the association between sports involvement and knee symptoms and other risk factors in King Abdulaziz University Medical students. Methods: Across-sectional study was done on 358 undergraduate medical students at King Abdul-Aziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from the 2nd to the 6th academic years. A pre-designed questionnaire was used to collect data about participants' demographics, BMI, smoking, coffee intake, academic activities, smartphone, Internet, computer use, type of school bag, work surface, part-time job, sports activities and its types were added. Data about musculoskeletal disorders in the knee and other body parts and their patterns and practising of sports were collected. Results: The prevalence of life experience of musculoskeletal in the knee was 35.5%. While 27.4% experienced it in the last 12 months, and 16.2% experienced it in the previous week. Of the participants, 9.8% were currently experiencing musculoskeletal disorders in the knee. The mean pain intensity of those with musculoskeletal disease was 5.44 ±1.8, with 8.7% skipping school because of their musculoskeletal disorder and 50.8% souk medical advice. Ex-smokers, those with a lower mean of hours per week of engagement in clinical sessions, who were playing fitness sports, and who experienced musculoskeletal disorders in other body parts had a significantly higher percentage of having a history of knee symptoms. Conclusion: health education programs about the relationship between knee disorders and sports and other risk factors should be directed to university students.
The Prevalence of Musculoskeletal Pain (MSP) Among Orthopedic Surgeons and Residents in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Area

Abstract:Background: Orthopedic surgery is a tiring specialty both physically and mentally. Surgeons tend to hold strenuous postures for long periods of time. Orthopedic surgery residents are affected just as much as their seniors by the difficult ergonomics. More care should be aimed toward healthcare professionals to improve patient outcomes and decrease the burden on our surgeons. The goal of this study is to pinpoint the areas of musculoskeletal pain among orthopedic surgery physicians and residents and its prevalence in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Eastern region of Saudi Arabia. A simple random selection of 103 male and female orthopedic surgery residents from Saudi Commission for Health Specialties accredited hospitals was enrolled in the study. Residents enrolled from the first to fifth year. Data were collected using a self-administered online questionnaire based on the musculoskeletal Nordic questionnaire activated in 2022-2023. Results: Out of 103, a total of 83 completed the survey. The majority (49.9%) were junior residents from residency year (R) 1-R3 and exactly 52 (62.7%) residents were males. The majority of the participants, which were 35 physicians (55.6%), perfume less than six operations as average operations per week, and duration stay in the operating room (OR) per operation there were 29 physicians (46%) stay in the OR for 3-6 h. The most reported sites of pain included lower back pain (46%), followed by neck pain (39.7%) and then upper back pain (30.2%). About 27% of the participants had the pain for more than 6 months, however, only 7 (11.1%) residents seek for medical help. Considering the associated factors with MSP, smoking, and residency year were significantly associated with having musculoskeletal pain (MSP). The presence of MSK pain among R1 residents represents 89.5%, in comparison with R2 residents Who reported 63.6% and 66.7% among R5 residents. This finding indicates a decrease in MSP among residents over the 5 years of residency programs. Additionally, the majority of the participants with MSP reported being smokers 24 (88.9%), controversy, only three of the participants represent (11.1%) without MSP and smokers. Conclusions: Musculoskeletal pain is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. The results indicate that the most reported areas of MSP were the low back, neck, and upper back. Only a minority of the participants went to seek medical help. Residents from R1 experienced more MSP than their seniors and this could indicate an adaptive behavior from senior staff. More research should be done on the topic of MSP in order to promote health among caregivers across the kingdom.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Architecture students maintain uncomfortable body postures for hours while designing and constructing project models, putting them at high risk of developing musculoskeletal pain (MSP). OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to determine the prevalence of MSP among students at the Architecture and Planning College at King Saud University, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional survey study used a self-administered online questionnaire. A total of 123 students (65 female) aged 19–25 years participated. The survey consisted of eight demographic and health status questions and the Extended Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ-E). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics; Mann-Whitney U and chi-square tests were used to compare genders at α= .05. RESULTS: Approximately 94.3% of architecture students reported pain in at least one body region in the last 12 months, and 87.0% in the last seven days. The highest reported percentage of MSP was neck pain, followed by lower back pain. No differences in MSP were found between genders, except in elbow and hand pain for the last 12 months and elbow pain for the last seven days. CONCLUSION: There was a high prevalence of MSP among undergraduate architecture students, highlighting the need to prevent occupational health issues at an early stage.

Abstract:A BSTRACT Background: The past decade has witnessed a revolution in smartphones owing to their growing importance and various applications. However, excessive usage can lead to addiction and joint pain in the wrist/thumb area. Despite these negative effects, smartphones offer medical students access to the resources they need. Objective: To determine the association between smartphone addiction and thumb/wrist pain among undergraduate students of Jazan University. Methods: A cross-sectional self-administrated, online survey and online convenience sample technique was used. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS Software. Results: This survey included 337 participants, of which two-thirds were female (66.8%) and the rest male (33.2%); 32.6% of the respondents were studying in the College of Medicine. Of the 337 participants, 32% reported experiencing pain in their wrists or at the back of their neck while using a smartphone. The study found an average Smartphone Addition Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV) score of 32.5 ± 8.0 out of 50 and a total Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation score of 48.8 ± 14.7, with a pain score of 13.3 ± 11.0 and a function score of 35.5 ± 11.7. The study also revealed a significant association between smartphone addiction and thumb/wrist pain ( P value = 0.029), with females and students of the College of Applied Medical Science associated with higher SAS-SV scores, thereby indicating higher smartphone addiction. Conclusion: Significant correlation exists between smartphone addiction and thumb/wirst pain among medical students of Jazan University.
Musculoskeletal pain affecting undergraduate nursing students: A cross sectional study on the prevalence and the associated factors

Abstract:Background: Musculoskeletal pain conditions (MSP) affect not only professional nurses but nursing students too. Long standing pain conditions affecting young individuals in their productive years can impact their work efficiency and can have economic impacts. Effective interventions to decrease the effect of MSP conditions are essential for a healthy professional nursing force which form the backbone of the healthcare system. Purpose: We conducted this study with an aim to estimate the prevalence and patterns of MSP conditions in undergraduate nursing students. Additionally, we attempted to evaluate the associated factors and identify the predictors of MSP conditions in them. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted using a web-based electronic questionnaire on nursing students at a tertiary level teaching hospital. The questionnaire prepared on Kobo Toolbox was circulated among the students of each class by their class representative using WhatsApp and e-mail. Two reminders were sent at 24-hour intervals. The data were analysed to identify the prevalence of MSP and evaluate the probable associated factors. Results: One hundred and seventy-nine out of 255 (70.2 %) participants responded and 173 consented for participation. Around 53.2 % participants had suffered from MSP in the past year. A total of 43.9 % of the participants had previously suffered from musculoskeletal pain even earlier than the past one-year in question. Those in their 2nd academic year had higher odds of suffering from MSP. Factors related to self-study after the formal teachings at the school/ college of nursing like the place, duration, and posture, and the pattern of usage of electronic devices like smartphones and laptop computers had no significant association with the MSP conditions. Lack of physical exercise, attending clinical placements, and the factors related to such placements like duration and frequency of placements, and the duration of breaks during any placement were noted to have an influence on MSP. Conclusion: More than 50 % students reported to be affected by MSP over a year. Association with factors like inadequate physical activity, and strenuous clinical placements identified in this study indicate that modifications in the nursing curriculum are required. Encouraging physical activity on one hand, while minimising exhaustive, and taxing clinical placements might be the way forward for improving the musculoskeletal health of aspiring nurses.

Abstract:BackgroundMedical students have high levels of stress that could be due to the daily life stressors and the extra stress of academic burden. The present study investigated the perceived stress level as well as the reasons and sources of stress among medical students at a comparatively newly established medical college affiliated with King Abdulaziz University (KAU), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (SA).MethodsThe present study was carried out at Rabigh Medical College (RMC), KAU, Jeddah, and completed in 2015. The data was collected by an anonymous self-administered questionnaire that has three components: a list of 33 items of probable stressors, perceived stress scale, and demographic information and academics.ResultsThe response rate in our study was 86% (152/176), the mean age was 20.35 ± 1.09, 77 (51%) were from preclinical years and 75 (49%) from clinical years. The mean PSS score among our participants was 28.5 ± 3.8 with a median of 28.0 (IQR 26.0–31.0) and 59.2% of participants were stressed. The mean PSS score 30.6 ± 4.4 for students with sibling > 5 was significantly higher as compared to the mean PSS score (27.9 ± 3.3) for students with sibling ≤5. Similarly, the mean PSS score (32.0 ± 3.4) of students with often/always occurrence of psychosocial stressors was higher as compared to the mean PSS score (28.3 ± 3.7) of those students with less than a frequent occurrence of stressors. Moreover, those students that were more stressed had lower marks in the last exam (< 80%) as compared to students with less stress who had higher marks (≥80%) (P < .05).Performance in practicals, examinations frequency, disappointment with the class lectures, lack of personal interest in medicine, lengthy academic curriculum/syllabus, worries about the future and periodic examinations performance were rated as severe.The logistic regression analysis showed that stress cases were linked with last exam marks [OR 1.26, 95% CI 0.64–2.48], number of siblings [OR 2.27, 95% CI 0.97–5.27], and academic stressor [OR 2.02, 95% CI 0.61–6.66] but no significant relationship was found.ConclusionThere were high-stress levels among the participants of this study, and the main stressors were academic-related.

Prevalence and determinants of low back pain among residents in Abha City, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: Healthcare work is a major risk for having musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), including low back pain (LBP). This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of LBP and define its associated risk factors among resident physicians. Material and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among all resident physicians of all specialties in Abha city during the period from July 2020 to September 2020. Data were collected using an online pre-structured data collection tool. The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) (back pain section) was applied to assess the effect of LBP on the residents' ability to perform job duties effectively. Results: A total of 312 resident physicians responded. Their age ranged between 25 and 41 years. Males represented 57.7% of them. The prevalence of LBP was 64.7%. The most common reported aggravating factors for LBP were working in uncomfortable posture (73.3%), standing for long periods (64.4%), and long sitting sessions (51.5%). Regarding the pain-relieving factors, sleeping ranked first (60.4%), followed by taking analgesics (48.5%) and maintaining a good posture (35.6%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that obese subjects were at higher risk than underweight subjects to develop LBP (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) =6.18, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.26-30.34, P = 0.025). Compared to resident physicians without family history of back pain, those with such history were at almost 4-fold higher risk of developing LBP (AOR = 3.90, 95% CI: 2.33-6.52, P < 0.001). Conclusion: LBP is a very prevalent problem among resident physicians, particularly obese subjects and those with family history of back pain. LBP adversely impacts the work performance of the affected physicians.

Abstract:Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are one of the most common occupational health hazards and serious health concerns among teachers. About 39% to 95% of teachers suffer from musculoskeletal pain that can lead to a decline in their performance, frequent sick leaves and early retirement, and can have a negative impact on their quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of and risk factors for MSDs among secondary schoolteachers in Hail, Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional study was conducted through an electronic survey. A self-reported and validated Arabic version of the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) was used. Participants were recruited randomly through a two-stage sampling technique. A total of 251 respondents (57.8% males and 42.2% females) returned the questionnaire. The overall prevalence of MSDs was 87.3%. Female teachers (95.3%) suffered more than their male counterparts (81.4%). The most common site was the lower back (62.55%), followed by the shoulders (53.39%) and knees (41.04%). Most of the participants (72.7%) reported MSDs in multiple sites. Binomial logistic regression predicted that smoking is a significant risk factor for lower back disorders (p < 0.05). A high prevalence of MSDs can be due to a substantial lack of awareness and practice of ergonomics, which warrant the development of preventive strategies and educational programs.

Low Back Pain Among Students of Medical University of Tunis

Abstract:Objective: Low Back Pain (LBP) is the most common musculoskeletal disorder among working adults. It is one of the most prevalent complaints among students. Medical students are among those who are most exposed to this condition; due to stress, numerous hours of studying, and the sedentary lifestyle. Our study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of LBP among the students of Tunis Faculty of Medicine and to assess its impact on student life. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on the Tunis Faculty of Medicine students. Data were collected through an online self-administered questionnaire. Sociodemographic, personal, and lifestyle characteristics were collected. LBP was assessed using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Health Questionnaire and Its impact using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Results: One hundred and forty-eight students were included. The mean age was 22.9 ± 2.3 years (19.64-38.21). The sex ratio was 0.29. According to the Nordic questionnaire, the point, annual and lifetime prevalence of LBP were 37.8%, 80.4%, and 90.5%, respectively. The mean ODI score was 10.32 ± 8.48 % (0-32). The ODI score was minimal in 87.3% and moderated in 12.7% of cases. The associated factors with LBP were: young age (p = 0.015), spending more than 4 hours in a sitting position (p = 0.059), second cycle of medical studies (p = 0.006), low screen projection in the amphitheater (p = 0.029) and poor layout of the amphitheatres (p = 0.000). The feeling of depression was significantly higher among LBP students (p = 0.018). In the multivariate analysis, the factors that remained statistically significant were the second cycle of medical studies (OR= 3.41), feeling of depression (OR = 3.7), and the belief in the responsibility for the poor layout of the amphitheaters in the genesis or maintenance of LBP (OR = 7.66). Conclusion: LBP in medical students is multifactorial across both personal and college-life domains.
Prevalence and Interrelationships of Screen Time, Visual Disorders, and Neck Pain among University Students: A Cross-Sectional Study at Majmaah University

Abstract:Background: Digital devices significantly contribute to vision-related problems. In addition, prolonged postural imbalance, owing to excessive use of digital devices, can lead to the tightening of head and neck muscles, resulting in neck pain, a common musculoskeletal discomfort that significantly affects individuals with poor vision. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and interrelationships of screen time, visual disorders, and neck pain among students at Majmaah University. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Majmaah University, Saudi Arabia, enrolling students aged 18 to 25 years. Exclusion criteria included neurological or musculoskeletal disorders. Demographic data and information on visual and neck pain symptoms were collected. The Neck Disability Index questionnaire was used to assess neck pain, and data were analyzed using SPSS version 24.0. Results: Among 263 participants, 53.6% were female. Nearsightedness (38.0%) and dry/itchy eyes (49.0%) were the most common visual disorders and symptoms, respectively. Visual disorders were prevalent in 62.0% of students, while neck pain was reported by 79.5%. Females and those studying for more than 5 h using electronic screens daily reported higher neck disability index scores. A significant association was found between >5 h of study duration [screen time] and neck disability (OR 3.703, 95% CI 1.500–9.144, p = 0.005). Conclusion: The study highlights a relationship between visual problems and neck pain among university students, emphasizing the need for addressing vision-related issues to reduce neck discomfort. High screen time could substantially increase the odds of developing neck disability. However, authors warrant cautious interpretation in the light of following limitations: cross-sectional study, small sample size, lack of statistical power, and self-reported data.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal (MSK) manifestations represent a common work-related physical complication that affect surgeons and impacts their life and the healthcare service negatively.AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of work related MSK manifestations among surgeons in a tertiary care hospital and to identify the possible associated risk factors.METHODS: A Web-based self-administered cross-sectional survey was conducted. This study targeted all surgeons regardless of their nationalities, ages, genders, and marital statuses. The questionnaire assessed the participants' demographic data as well as musculoskeletal manifestations.RESULTS: Most respondents (80%) suffered from MSK manifestations that were related to performing surgeries. Back and neck areas represented the most affected body parts (71.1% and 59.8%, respectively). A significantly higher percentage of those with musculoskeletal manifestations practiced for 5-10 years (28.9%) (p = 0.006).CONCLUSION: MSK pain is common among Saudi surgeons in different specialties. More attention should be directed to improving the physical environments in which the surgeons are operating. Moreover, surgeons should be educated about the recommended ergonomic positions that can prevent or decrease their work related MSK manifestations.

Medical students frequently minimize their sleep and habits to cope with their workload and their stressful lives, which has a negative influence on both mental health and academic performance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of stress and its effect on sleep quality among medical students (in both the preclinical and clinical years) at Jazan University in Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional research design was applied in this study. The sample constituted medical students at Jazan University, Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. A self-administered online survey was distributed actively to measure the variables of interest. Results: This study examined the sleep quality and psychological distress among 347 students. The findings revealed that a significant proportion of students experienced sleep difficulties, with 52.8% reporting mild sleep problems and 46.6% reporting moderate sleep difficulties. In addition, a notable percentage of participants (28.2%) reported very high psychological distress, while 27.4% experienced severe psychological distress. Conclusions: This study found that medical students had a high level of stress and poor sleep quality, which led to unhealthy habits, such as consuming many energy drinks. Hence, it is recommended that concerns should be addressed to minimize the risk of developing chronic illnesses.
Work-related musculoskeletal symptoms among Saudi radiologists: a cross-sectional multi-centre study

Abstract:Background: Musculoskeletal disorders are common health problems worldwide. Several factors cause these symptoms, including ergonomics and other individual considerations. Computer users are prone to repetitive strain injuries that increase the risk of developing musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS). Radiologists are susceptible to developing MSS because they work long hours analysing medical images on computers in an increasingly digitalised field. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of MSS among Saudi radiologists and the associated risk factors. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional, non-interventional, self-administered online survey. The study was conducted on 814 Saudi radiologists from various regions in Saudi Arabia. The study's outcome was the presence of MSS in any body region that limited participation in routine activities over the previous 12 months. The results were descriptively examined using binary logistic regression analysis to estimate the odds ratio (OR) of participants who had disabling MSS in the previous 12 months. All university, public, and private radiologists received an online survey containing questions about work surroundings, workload (e.g., spent at a computer workstation), and demographic characteristics. Results: The prevalence of MSS among the radiologists was 87.7%. Most of the participants (82%) were younger than 40 years of age. Radiography and computed tomography were the most common imaging modalities that caused MSS (53.4% and 26.8%, respectively). The most common symptoms were neck pain (59.3%) and lower back pain (57.1%). After adjustment, age, years of experience, and part-time employment were significantly associated with increased MSS (OR = .219, 95% CI = .057-.836; OR = .235, 95% CI = 087-.634; and OR = 2.673, 95% CI = 1.434-4.981, respectively). Women were more likely to report MSS than males (OR = 2.12, 95% CI = 1.327-3.377). Conclusions: MSS are common among Saudi radiologists, with neck pain and lower back pain being the most frequently reported symptoms. Gender, age, years of experience, type of imaging modality, and employment status were the most common associated risk factors for developing MSS. These findings are vital for the development of interventional plans to reduce the prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints in clinical radiologists.

Abstract:Background: Smartphone usage has become ubiquitous in Saudi Arabia with concerns growing over its impact on musculoskeletal health. Globally, various musculoskeletal symptoms have been linked to smartphone use such as neck pain, headaches, and shoulder discomfort, often exacerbated by poor posture and prolonged screen time. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to investigate the impact of smartphone use on musculoskeletal health among adults aged 18 years and older. Participants were recruited through convenience sampling from various settings such as universities, workplaces, and public areas. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire administered both online and in paper format, covering demographic characteristics, smartphone usage behaviors, awareness of smartphone-related health effects, and the prevalence and severity of musculoskeletal symptoms. Results: A total of 413 participants from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, were surveyed to assess musculoskeletal symptoms associated with smartphone use. Demographic analysis revealed a predominantly young, single, and highly educated population, primarily Saudi nationals. Smartphone usage patterns showed extensive daily use, with over 41% using their devices for more than five hours daily. The majority were aware of smartphone-related health effects. Musculoskeletal symptoms were prevalent, notably neck pain (83.8%), arm pain (63.8%), and headaches (71.2%). The incidence of symptoms related to text neck syndrome was substantial, although awareness and diagnosis were limited. The severity of symptoms varied, with mild to moderate levels reported most frequently. Conclusion: This study highlights a substantial prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms among smartphone users in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the need for public health interventions to promote ergonomic practices and mitigate health risks associated with smartphone use. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to establish causal relationships and evaluate intervention strategies aimed at reducing these symptoms effectively.

Abstract:This study estimated the prevalence of burnout and its determinants among medical students at Jazan University during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 444 medical students completed an online survey containing the Maslach burnout inventory. The prevalence of burnout was 54.5%. Burnout reached its peak during the fourth year whereas it was the lowest in the internship year. Being a resident in mountain areas, being delayed in college-level, being divorced, and having divorced parents were all associated with an increased risk of burnout. During their time at medical school, students generally showed a trend of consistently high scores in the personal accomplishment subscale, a decreasing trend in the emotional exhaustion subscale, and an increasing trend in the depersonalization subscale. The most important predictive factor was having separated parents. Perceived study satisfaction appeared to be a significant protective factor in a dose–response manner. These findings suggest that burnout among medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic is a concern that should be monitored and prevented.

Abstract:As digital technology and online activities have become more widely accessible over the past few years, information and communication technology have grown in importance in all students' lives. Most of them routinely use digital devices for a range of activities, primarily for online learning, activities, assignments, conversing, and Internet browsing. This study elucidated the relationship between neck and low back pain intensity and the use of digital devices among Saudi nursing students. A cross-sectional descriptive exploratory research design was applied using a convenience sample of 120 nursing students enrolled in an undergraduate nursing program at a Saudi government university located in Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia. A valid and reliable self-administered survey was employed. Data about sociodemographic characteristics, the Neck Disability Index and the Roland–Morris Disability Questionnaire were collected. The participants reported 9.1 ± 4.6 study hours on average per week. A total of 82.5% of them do not receive enough exercise, and 87.5% indicated daily use of digital devices. Around half (54.2%) of participants reported having neck pain of a mild intensity. About 60% of the participants regularly shift positions to rest their backs, 39.2% are only able to stand for limited periods due to back issues, and 39.2% expressed concern for others about what might happen to their health. Although there was an association between neck pain intensity and the age or gender of all research participants, there was a significant association between neck pain severity and marital status (χ2 = 15.226, p = 0.019). Our findings suggest that nursing students should maintain neutral neck and back postures on a regular basis to reduce pain, which could be attributed to extensive reading on digital devices.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of primary headaches, specifically tension-type headaches (TTH), among medical students at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and to identify the factors that contribute to the occurrence and relief of headaches. A cross-sectional study was conducted among second to sixth-year medical students at KSAU-HS from October 2022 to February 2023. Participants with chronic headaches who volunteered to participate were included. The International Classification of Headache Disorders, third edition (ICHD-3), was used to classify and differentiate between different types of headaches. Additional questions were included to assess factors that exacerbate or alleviate headaches, headache management strategies, and the impact of headaches on academic performance. Data were collected using electronic self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS version 21. A total of 303 participants were included in the study, with a mean age of 22 Â± 1.7 years. The majority of participants were male (59.4%), and most were in clinical years (61.1%) with a GPA of 4.5 to 5 (57.1%). Nearly all participants reported experiencing at least one episode of headache in the past year, and 60.7% met the criteria for TTH. The most commonly reported headache characteristics were bilateral location (71.3%), frequent occurrence (53.8%), duration of more than one hour (84.5%), and frontal site (61.7%). Lack of sleep (62.4%) was identified as the most common trigger, while taking simple analgesics like Paracetamol (72.3%) and sleep (50.5%) were the most commonly used therapies to manage headaches. The majority of participants (75.9%) reported that their headaches did not significantly affect their academic performance. A significant association was found between gender and tension-type headaches, with male students being at a higher risk (p-value < 0.001). In conclusion, primary headaches, particularly tension-type headaches, are prevalent among medical students at KSAU-HS, potentially impacting their academic performance. Further research is warranted to raise awareness among students regarding effective headache management strategies.
A Cross-Sectional Study Using STROBE Platform to Examine Sleep Characteristics, Mental Health and Academic Performance of Female Applied Medical Sciences Students in the Southwest of Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: Medical students are expected to excel in their academics. Hence exposing them to a certain amount of strain may sometimes cause sleep disruptions. The purpose of this study was to determine the sleep quality among Saudi Applied Medical Sciences students and its potential connections with their academic performance and mental health. Methods: This online cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted at Jazan University's College of Applied Medical Sciences in Saudi Arabia. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a known indicator of sleep quality, a validated mental health measure; Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21), and Academic Performance Scale (APS) with 89 internal consistencies were included in the questionnaire. The cumulative grade point average (GPA) was also used as a covariate to evaluate students' academic success. Results: 112 people responded (response rate = 93%), and 105 of them presented comprehensive information about their backgrounds, way of life, academic standing, sleep patterns, and mental health. Participants' average GPA and APS scores were 4.23 ± 0.52 and 33.16 ± 5.63, respectively. The mean global PSQI score was 6.47 with 2.34 of standard deviation (SD). The majority of individuals (60%) had poor sleep quality particularly due to abnormal sleep latency and lesser sleep duration, as determined by their PSQI score. The prevalence rates for depression, anxiety, and stress were higher; 53%, 54% and 40%, respectively. Both depression and anxiety were substantially correlated with poor sleep quality (p-value = 0.008, p-value = 0.01, respectively). Sleep quality had no significant effect on GPA while global PSQI and depression were significantly negatively correlated with an APS score of participants (p-value = 0.007 and 0.015, respectively). Conclusions: Higher rates of poor sleep quality and psychologically negative emotions were prevalent. Unhealthy sleep patterns were linked to increased levels of anxiety and depression. Self-perceived academic performance was negatively impacted by inadequate sleep and negative emotions, despite the fact that the GPA results were unaffected.
