Abstract:A molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheet-decorated titanium dioxide (TiO2) NRA heterojunction composite was fabricated successfully through a two-step hydrothermal approach. Microstructures and optical properties of specimens were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The gaps of the TiO2 nanorods have been filled with tiny MoS2 nanosheets, which can increase the surface area of MoS2/TiO2 NRA composite thin films. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of the thin films were measured and discussed in greater detail. The appropriate hydrothermal reaction temperature of MoS2 is important for the growth of perfect MoS2/TiO2 NRA composites with significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance. The photodegradation rate and k value of MoS2-220/TiO2 are 86% and 0.0105 min(-1), respectively, which are much larger than those of blank TiO2. The enhanced photocatalytic performance could be attributed to the higher visible light absorption and the reduced recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.
In Situ Doping Effect in Monolayer MoS2 Via Laser Irradiation

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting materials with a single atomic layer display exceptional structural symmetry and band structures, making them the most promising candidates for investigating the spin-valley coupling effect and fabricating novel optoelectronic devices. Their atomic thinness also makes it easy to adjust their excitonic optical response through plasma treatment or thermal annealing. In this study, we present a simple technique for modifying the optical properties of monolayer MoS _2 by briefly exposing it to laser irradiation in ambient conditions. Initially, this exposure resulted in a nearly twofold increase in photoluminescence (PL) intensity, with the neutral exciton intensity increasing while the trion exciton intensity decreased. We propose that oxygen-related functional groups, such as O _2 and H _2 O from the surrounding air, adsorb onto MoS _2 and extract extra electrons, which enhances exciton emission while reducing trion emission. In a subsequent stage, both exciton intensities decreased as all extra electrons were depleted. Additionally, any structural distortions or potential damage were found to decrease the PL intensity, and these changes were linked to alterations in the Raman spectra.
Active control of surface plasmon resonance in MoS2-Ag hybrid nanostructures

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) monolayers have attracted much attention for their novel optical properties and efficient light-matter interactions. When excited by incident laser, the optical response of MoS2 monolayers was effectively modified by elementary photo-excited excitons owing to their large exciton binding energy, which can be facilitated for the optical-controllable exciton-plasmon interactions. Inspired by this concept, we experimentally investigated active light control of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in MoS2-Ag hybrid nanostructures. The white light spectra of SPR were gradually red-shifted by increasing laser power, which was distinctly different from the one of bare Ag nanostructure. This spectroscopic tunability can be further controlled by near-field coupling strength and polarization state of light, and selectively applied to the control of plasmonic dark mode. An analytical Lorentz model for photo-excited excitons induced modulation of MoS2 dielectric function was developed to explain the insight physics of this SPR tunability. Our study opens new possibilities to the development of all-optical controlled nanophotonic devices based on 2D materials.
In-Center Nutrition Practices of Clinics within a Large Hemodialysis Provider in the United States.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Eating during hemodialysis treatment remains a controversial topic. It is perceived that more restrictive practices in the United States contribute to poorer nutritional status and elevated mortality compared with some other parts of the world. However, in-center food practices in the United States have not been previously described. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS In 2011, we conducted a survey of clinic practices and clinician (dietitian, facility administrator, and medical director) opinions related to in-center food consumption within a large dialysis organization. After the initial survey, we provided clinicians with educational materials about eating during treatment. In 2014, we performed a follow-up survey. Differences in practices and opinions were analyzed using chi-squared tests and logistic regression. RESULTS In 2011, 343 of 1199 clinics (28.6%) did not allow eating during treatment, 222 clinics (18.2%) did not allow drinking during treatment, and 19 clinics (1.6%) did not allow eating at the facility before or after treatment. In 2014, the proportion of clinics that did not allow eating during treatment had declined to 22.6% (321 of 1422 clinics), a significant shift in practice (P<0.001). Among the 178 (6.8%) clinics that self-reported that eating was "more allowed" in 2014, the main reason for this shift was an increased focus on nutritional status. Among clinicians, a higher percentage encouraged eating during treatment (53.1% versus 37.4%; P<0.05), and facility administrators and medical directors were less concerned about the seven reasons commonly cited for restricting eating during treatment in 2014 compared with 2011 (P<0.05 for all). CONCLUSIONS We found that 28.6% and 22.6% of hemodialysis clinics within the United States restricted eating during treatment in 2011 and 2014, respectively, a rate more than double that found in an international cohort on which we previously published. However, practices and clinician opinions are shifting toward allowing patients to eat. Additional research is warranted to understand the effect that these practices have on patient outcomes and outline best practices.
Enhancing Charge Transfer with Foreign Molecules Through Femtosecond Laser Induced MoS2 Defect Sites for Photoluminescence Control and SERS Enhancement.

Abstract:Defect/active site control is crucial for tuning the chemical, optical, and electronic properties of MoS2, which can adjust the performance of MoS2 in application areas such as electronics, optics, catalysis, and molecular sensing. This study presents an effective method of inducing defect/active sites, including micro/nanofractured structures and S atomic vacancies, on monolayer MoS2 flakes by using femtosecond laser pulses, through which physical-chemical adsorption and charge transfer between foreign molecules (O2 or R6G molecules) and MoS2 are enhanced. The enhanced charge transfer between foreign molecules (O2 or R6G) and femtosecond laser-treated MoS2 can enhance the electronic doping effect between them, hence resulting in a photoluminescence photon energy shift (reaching 0.05 eV) of MoS2 and Raman enhancement (reaching 6.4 times) on MoS2 flakes for R6G molecule detection. Finally, photoluminescence control and micropatterns on MoS2 and surface-enhanced-Raman-scattering (SERS) enhancement of MoS2 for organic molecule detection are achieved. The proposed method, which can control the photoluminescence properties and arbitrary micropatterns on MoS2 and enhance its chemicobiological sensing performance for organic/biological molecules, has advantages of simplicity, maskless processing, strong controllability, high precision, and high flexibility, highlighting the superior ability of femtosecond laser pulses to achieve the property control and functionalization of two-dimensional materials.
Carbothermal-reduction-assisted CVD Synthesis of Layered MoS2 Nanosheets on Activated Carbon Support: Implication for Photocatalysis

Abstract:The photocatalytic activity of MoS2-based heterostructures largely depends on the thickness and orienta-tion of the MoS2 components. We report a new facile two-step carbothermal-reduction-assisted CVD synthesis protocol to produce horizontally and vertically aligned MoS2 nanosheets (NSs) on activated carbon (AC) granules. MoO3/AC pellets were first prepared by sonicating MoO3 and AC powders and then used as a substrate and Mo source to obtain MoS2/AC composites. A feature of the process is that MoO3 particles, prior to interaction with sulfur, undergo carbothermal reduction with the formation of Mo sub -oxides favorable for MoS2 growth. The thickness and orientation of MoS2 NSs strongly depend on the synthesis temperature. At 600 degrees C, horizontally oriented triangular MoS2 NSs are formed on the surface of molybdenum oxide particles, and at 700 degrees C, thin vertically oriented MoS2 NSs with a high aspect ratio (with a thickness and a lateral size of 20 x 5000 nm2) are grown. The high photocatalytic activity of MoS2/AC composites during the decompositions of organic dyes under UV radiation is associated with the thickness and orientation of MoS2 NSs. The vertical arrangement of the active edges intensifies the chemical inter-action with the reagents, and the small NS thickness prevents the recombination of charge carriers and facilitates their transfer to the surface. The obtained results open up new possibilities for the development of cost-effective and scalable MoS2-based photocatalysts with tunable thickness and orientation of MoS2 NSs on commercially available AC substrates using a carbothermal-reduction-assisted CVD approach.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Maskless Micro/Nanopatterning and Bipolar Electrical Rectification of MoS2 Flakes Through Femtosecond Laser Direct Writing

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) micro/nanostructures are desirable for tuning electronic properties, developing required functionality, and improving the existing performance of multilayer MoS2 devices. This work presents a useful method to flexibly microprocess multilayer MoS2 flakes through femtosecond laser pulse direct writing, which can directly fabricate regular MoS2 nanoribbon arrays with ribbon widths of 179, 152, 116, 98, and 77 nm, and arbitrarily pattern MoS2 flakes to form micro/nanostructures such as single nanoribbon, labyrinth array, and cross structure. This method is mask-free and simple and has high flexibility, strong controllability, and high precision. Moreover, numerous oxygen molecules are chemically and physically adsorbed on laser-processed MoS2, attributed to roughness defect sites and edges of micro/nanostructures that contain numerous unsaturated edge sites and highly active centers. In addition, electrical tests of the field-effect transistor fabricated from the prepared MoS2 nanoribbon arrays reveal new interesting features: output and transfer characteristics exhibit a strong rectification (not going through zero and bipolar conduction) of drain-source current, which is supposedly attributed to the parallel structures with many edge defects and p-type chemical doping of oxygen molecules on MoS2 nanoribbon arrays. This work demonstrates the ability of femtosecond laser pulses to directly induce micro/nanostructures, property changes, and new device properties of two-dimensional materials, which may enable new applications in electronic devices based on MoS2 such as logic circuits, complementary circuits, chemical sensors, and p-n diodes.
Nonlinear Optical Imaging, Precise Layer Thinning, and Phase Engineering in MoTe 2 with Femtosecond Laser

Abstract:The control of layer thickness and phase structure in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) like MoTe2 has recently gained much attention due to their broad applications in nanoelectronics and nanophotonics. Continuous-wave laser-based thermal treatment has been demonstrated to realize layer thinning and phase engineering in MoTe2, but requires long heating time and is largely influenced by the thermal dissipation of the substrate. The ultrafast laser produces a different response but is yet to be explored. In this work, we report the nonlinear optical interactions between MoTe2 crystals and femtosecond (fs) laser, where we have realized the nonlinear optical characterization, precise layer thinning, and phase transition in MoTe2 using a single fs laser platform. By using the fs laser with a low fluence as an excitation light source, we observe the strong nonlinear optical signals of second-harmonic generation and four-wave mixing in MoTe2, which can be used to identify the odd–even layers and layer numbers, respectively. With increasing the laser fluence to the ablation threshold (Fth), we achieve layer-by-layer removal of MoTe2, while 2H-to-1T′ phase transition occurs with a higher laser fluence (2Fth to 3Fth). Moreover, we obtain highly ordered subwavelength nanoripples on both the thick and few-layer MoTe2 with a controlled fluence, which can be attributed to the fs laser-induced reorganization of the molten plasma. Abstract:Monolayer semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides (S-TMDs) have been extensively studied as materials for next-generation optoelectronic devices due to their direct band gap and high exciton binding energy at room temperature. Under a superacid treatment of bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (TFSI), sulfur-based TMDs such as MoS2 can emit strong photoluminescence (PL) with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) approaching unity. However, the magnitude of PL enhancement varies by more than 2 orders of magnitude in published reports. A major culprit behind the discrepancy is sulfur-based TMD's sensitivity to above-bandgap photostimulation. Here, we present a detailed study of how TFSI-treated MoS2 reacts to photostimulation with increasing PL occurring hours after continuous or pulsed laser exposure. The PL of TFSI-treated MoS2 is enhanced up to 74 times its initial intensity after 5 h of continuous exposure to 532 nm laser light. Photostimulation also enhances the PL of untreated MoS2 but with a much smaller enhancement. Caution should be taken when probing MoS2 PL spectra, as above-bandgap light can alter the resulting intensity and peak wavelength of the emission over time. The presence of air is verified to play a key role in the photostimulated enhancement effect. Additionally, the rise of PL intensity is mirrored by an increase in measured carrier lifetime of up to ∼400 ps, consistent with the suppression of nonradiative pathways. This work demonstrates why variations in PL intensity are observed across samples and provides an understanding of the changes in carrier lifetimes to better engineer next-generation optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:In this study, we adopted time-dependent density functional theory to investigate the optical properties of monolayer MoS 2 and the effect of intense few-cycle femtosecond laser pulses on these properties. The electron dynamics of monolayer MoS 2 under few-cycle and multi-cycle laser irradiation were described. The polarization direction of the laser had a marked effect on the energy absorption and electronic excitation of monolayer MoS 2 because of anisotropy. Change in the polarization direction of few-cycle pulse changed the absorbed energy by a factor over 4000. Few-cycle pulse showed a higher sensitivity to the electronic property of material than multi-cycle pulse. The modulation of the dielectric properties of the material was observed on the femtosecond time scale. The negative divergence appeared in the real part of the function at low frequencies and photoinduced blue shift occurred due to Burstein-Moss effect. The irradiation of femtosecond laser caused the dielectric response within the infrared region and introduced anisotropy to the in-plane optical properties. Laser-based engineering of optical properties through controlling transient electron dynamics expands the functionality of MoS 2 and has potential applications in direction-dependent optoelectronic devices.
Single-layer MoS2 as efficient photocatalyst

Abstract:The potential application of the single-layer MoS2 as photocatalyst was revealed in this work based on first-principles calculations. It is found that the pristine single-layer MoS2 is a good candidate for photocatalyst, and its catalyzing ability can be tuned by the applied mechanical strain. Furthermore, the p-type doping could improve the catalyzing ability more efficiently: first, the p-type doping makes the direct transition of electron from valence band maximum (VBM) to conduction band minimum (CBM) viable; second, it separates the water splitting reaction sites by having reduction in Mo sites and oxidation in P dopant sites; third, it improves the efficiency by equalizing the reducing power {\Delta}1 and oxidizing power {\Delta}2, as well as by enhancing the light absorption in long wavelength end of the visible light. Thus enables the single-layer MoS2 to be a efficient visible-light photocatalyst.

Laser Annealing Towards High-Performance Monolayer MoS2 and WSe2 Field Effect Transistors.

Abstract:The transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have been intensively investigated as promising nanoelectronic and optoelectronic materials. However, the pervasive adsorbates on the surfaces of monolayer TMDCs, including oxygen and water molecules from the ambient environment, tend to degrade the device performance, thus hindering specific applications. In this work, we report the effect of laser irradiation on the transport and photoresponse of monolayer MoS2 and WSe2 devices, and this laser annealing process is demonstrated as a straightforward approach to remove physically adsorbed contaminants. Compared to vacuum pumping and in situ thermal annealing treatments, the field-effect transistors after laser annealing show a more than one order of magnitude higher on-state current, and no apparent degradation of device performance at low temperatures. The mobility of the monolayer WSe2 devices can be enhanced by three to four times, and for single-layered MoS2 devices with the commonly used SiO2 as the back-gate, the mobility increases by 20 times, reaching [Formula: see text]. The efficient cleaning effect of laser annealing is also supported by the reduction of channel and contact resistance revealed by a transmission line experiment. Further, an enhanced photocurrent, by a factor of ten, has been obtained in the laser annealed device. These findings pave the way for high-performance monolayer TMDC-based electronic and optoelectronic devices with a clean surface and intrinsic properties.

Abstract:Metal sulfide semiconductors, such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) and bismuth trisulphide (Bi 2 S 3 ), are of considerable interest for their excellent applications in photocatalysis and in many other fields. However, the controllable synthesis of MoS 2 /Bi 2 S 3 hybrid nanostructures remains a challenge. In this study, we report a unique sacrificial templating strategy for preparing layer-controlled MoS 2 on three-dimensional (3D) Bi 2 S 3 micro-flowers. For this approach, Bi 2 S 3 was utilized as a sacrificial template to regulate the ion exchange, and the dosage of molybdenum was adjusted to tune the dynamic formation, thus converting the MoS 2 nanosheets on the Bi 2 S 3 micro-flowers from monolayer to multilayer. Such a 3D flower-like hybrid nanostructure enables MoS 2 /Bi 2 S 3 to exhibit adsorption-promoted photocatalysis under visible light irradiation, especially for the excellent photodegradation of low-concentration organic pollutants, for example, azo dye and atrazine. The observed superiority of the 3D MoS 2 /Bi 2 S 3 was mainly attributed to the increased mass transfer, robust light-harvesting capacity, improved charge separation, lower oxygen-activation barrier and enhanced active oxygen yield. Our findings are of interest for the development of novel S-based photocatalysts and provide a new opportunity to efficiently remove low-concentration refractory pollutants.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has emerged as a promising material for catalysis and sustainable energy conversion. However, the inertness of its basal plane to electrochemical reactions poses challenges to the utilization of wafer-scale MoS2 in electrocatalysis. To overcome this limitation, we present a technique to enhance the catalytic activity of continuous MoS2 by preferentially activating its buried grain boundaries (GBs). Through mild UV irradiation, a significant enhancement in GB activity was observed that approaches the values for MoS2 edges, as confirmed by a site-selective photo-deposition technique and micro-electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) measurements. Combined spectroscopic and ab-initio simulation demonstrates substitutional oxygen functionalization at the grain boundaries to be the origin of this selective catalytic enhancement by an order of magnitude. Our approach not only improves the density of active sites in MoS2 catalytic processes but yield a new photocatalytic conversion process. By exploiting the difference in electronic structure between activated GBs and the basal plane, homo-compositional junctions were realized that improve the photocatalytic synthesis of hydrogen by 47% and achieve performances beyond the capabilities of other catalytic sites.

Changes in the Photoluminescence of Monolayer and Bilayer Molybdenum Disulfide during Laser Irradiation

Abstract:Various postsynthesis processes for transition metal dichalcogenides have been attempted to control the layer number and defect concentration, on which electrical and optical properties strongly depend. In this work, we monitored changes in the photoluminescence (PL) of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) until laser irradiation generated defects on the sample flake and completely etched it away. Higher laser power was required to etch bilayer MoS2 compared to monolayer MoS2. When the laser power was 270 μW with a full width at half-maximum of 1.8 μm on bilayer MoS2, the change in PL intensity over time showed a double maximum during laser irradiation due to a layer-by-layer etching of the flake. When the laser power was increased to 405 μW, however, both layers of bilayer MoS2 were etched all at once, which resulted in a single maximum in the change of PL intensity over time, as in the case of monolayer MoS2. The dependence of the etching pattern for bilayer MoS2 on laser power was also reflected in position changes of both exciton and trion PL peaks. The subtle changes in the PL spectra of MoS2 as a result of laser irradiation found here are discussed in terms of PL quantum efficiency, conversion between trions and excitons, mean interatomic spacing, and the screening of Coulomb interaction.

Selective CW Laser Synthesis of MoS2 and Mixture of MoS2 and MoO2 from (NH4)2MoS4 Film

Abstract:Very recently, the synthesis of 2D MoS2 and WS2 through pulsed laser-directed thermolysis can achieve wafer-scale and large-area structures, in ambient conditions. In this paper, we report the synthesis of MoS2 and MoS2 oxides from (NH4)2MoS4 film using a visible continuous-wave (CW) laser at 532 nm, instead of the infrared pulsed laser for the laser-directed thermolysis. The (NH4)2MoS4 film is prepared by dissolving its crystal powder in DI water, sonicating the solution, and dip-coating onto a glass slide. We observed a laser intensity threshold for the laser synthesis of MoS2, however, it occurred in a narrow laser intensity range. Above that range, a mixture of MoS2 and MoO2 is formed, which can be used for a memristor device, as demonstrated by other research groups. We did not observe a mixture of MoS2 and MoO3 in the laser thermolysis of (NH4)2MoS4. The laser synthesis of MoS2 in a line pattern is also achieved through laser scanning. Due to of the ease of CW beam steering and the fine control of laser intensities, this study can lead toward the CW laser-directed thermolysis of (NH4)2MoS4 film for the fast, non-vacuum, patternable, and wafer-scale synthesis of 2D MoS2.

Abstract:The recently discovered novel properties of two dimensional materials largely rely on the layer-critical variation in their electronic structure and lattice symmetry. Achieving layer-by-layer precision patterning is thus crucial for junction fabrications and device engineering, which hitherto poses an unprecedented challenge. Here we demonstrate laser thinning and patterning with layer-by-layer precision in a two dimensional (2D) quantum material MoS2. Monolayer, bilayer and trilayer of MoS2 films are produced with precise vertical and lateral control, which removes the extruding barrier for fabricating novel three dimensional (3D) devices composed of diverse layers and patterns. By tuning the laser fluence and exposure time we demonstrate producing MoS2 patterns with designed layer numbers. The underlying physics mechanism is identified to be temperature-dependent evaporation of the MoS2 lattice, verified by our measurements and calculations. Our investigation paves way for 3D device fabrication based on 2D layered quantum materials.
