Abstract:In the past two decades, several applications have been proposed for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Some of these applications, such as habitat monitoring, active volcano monitoring, and toxic gas detection, exclude the involvement of human presence because the environments are either dangerous, inaccessible, or too extensive. The scope of these applications can be extended if the ground networks are assisted by a network of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Paramount to this is the stability of the wireless links the UAVs establish with the ground nodes. Lossy and unstable links are costly to maintain the UAVs may exhaust their batteries prematurely. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the stability of aerial-to-ground links and propose a stochastic model to predict link quality as a function of time. The model can be used to estimate goodput, determine mission duration, and estimate short-term link connection and disconnection durations.
Penalized Reinforcement Learning-Based Energy-Efficient UAV-RIS Assisted Maritime Uplink Communications Against Jamming

Abstract:This paper proposes an aerial reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted maritime communication network (MCN) against jamming, where a hybrid RIS mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is deployed to adjust and amplify signals as a communication relay. This paper aims to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE) considering jamming noise and quality of service (QoS) constraints of maritime users (MUs) by jointly optimizing resource scheduling of hybrid UAV-RIS including phase shift factor, amplitude coefficient, active RIS ratio, and transmit power of MUs. Due to dynamic and unknown environments, we design a novel approach based on penalized deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to solve the optimization problem, in which a penalized point policy difference authentic boundary proximal policy optimization (P3D-ABPPO) approach is proposed to enhance the learning capacity and system EE performance. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed P3D-ABPPO-based hybrid UAV-RIS resource scheduling approach can significantly improve the system EE compared with other traditional DRL approaches. For example, the proposed P3D-ABPPO approach achieves system EE improvements of 10.38% compared with the PPO approach.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have garnered attention for their potential to improve wireless communication networks by establishing line-of-sight (LoS) connections. However, urban environments pose challenges such as tall buildings and trees, impacting communication pathways. Intelligent reflection surfaces (IRSs) offer a solution by creating virtual LoS routes through signal reflection, enhancing reliability and coverage. This paper presents a three-dimensional dynamic channel model for UAV-assisted communication systems with IRSs. Additionally, it proposes a novel channel-tracking approach using deep learning and artificial intelligence techniques, comprising preliminary estimation with a deep neural network and continuous monitoring with a Stacked Bidirectional Long and Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) model. Simulation results demonstrate faster convergence and superior performance compared to benchmarks, highlighting the effectiveness of integrating IRSs into UAV-enabled communication for enhanced reliability and efficiency.

Abstract:Many of the devices used in Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications are energy-limited, and thus supplying energy while maintaining seamless connectivity for IoT devices is of considerable importance. In this context, we propose a simultaneous wireless power transfer and information transmission scheme for IoT devices with support from reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. In particular, in a first phase, IoT devices harvest energy from the UAV through wireless power transfer; and then in a second phase, the UAV collects data from the IoT devices through information transmission. To characterise the agility of the UAV, we consider two scenarios: a hovering UAV and a mobile UAV. Aiming at maximizing the total network sum-rate, we jointly optimize the trajectory of the UAV, the energy harvesting scheduling of IoT devices, and the phaseshift matrix of the RIS. We formulate a Markov decision process and propose two deep reinforcement learning algorithms to solve the optimization problem of maximizing the total network sum-rate. Numerical results illustrate the effectiveness of the UAV's flying path optimization and the network's throughput of our proposed techniques compared with other benchmark schemes. Given the strict requirements of the RIS and UAV, the significant improvement in processing time and throughput performance demonstrates that our proposed scheme is well applicable for practical IoT applications.

[Penetrating chest trauma in which thoracoscopy was helpful; report of a case].

Abstract:A 32-year-old builder suffered from a chest trauma in a construction area. A ratchet penetrated his right chest wall posterolaterally, and he was transferred to our hospital. A chest X-ray and a computed tomography (CT) revealed that the tip of the instrument remained in the thoracic cavity and there were no other obvious damages including pneumothorax, hemothorax, and liver damage. We thought the simple removal of the instrument from his body was dangerous so he was transferred to the operating room and his chest was opened under general anesthesia. However, it was difficult to confirm the inside of penetrating point from the thoracotomy wound; therefore we used a thoracoscope. The thoracoscopy disclosed a penetration in the lung and a contusion on the diaphragm. The application of thoracoscopy in the operation of thoracic trauma is very promising in exploration of the thoracic cavity, especially in the area which is out of vision from the open thoracotomy.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a cooperative distributed learning based resource allocation scheme for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted wireless communication framework equipped with reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), aiming to dynamically allocate the amount of the resource block(RB) to ensure the fairness and efficiency from the end-to-end communications system perspective. We suggest a novel, but simple fairness-efficiency metrics (FE metrics) to measure the performance of resource allocating, and to compare various resource allocation policies, including our proposed cooperative deep learning approaches, other rule-based and centralized methods. The proposed cooperative distributed learning framework has the advantages of making decisions by considering information about the entire environment, so that cooperation provides better overall performance and reliability. Moreover, it enables double parallel computing and reduces execution time dramatically. The simulation result shows that our cooperative deep learning algorithm ensures excellent convergence and low time complexity during the execution in the complex Aerial RIS system to reduce communication delays, improve communication quality, and ensure fairness.
QoE Optimization for Live Video Streaming in UAV-to-UAV Communications via Deep Reinforcement Learning

Abstract:A challenge for rescue teams when fighting against wildfire in remote areas is the lack of information, such as the size and images of fire areas. As such, live streaming from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), capturing videos of dynamic fire areas, is crucial for firefighter commanders in any location to monitor the fire situation with quick response. The 5G network is a promising wireless technology to support such scenarios. In this paper, we consider a UAV-to-UAV (U2U) communication scenario, where a UAV at a high altitude acts as a mobile base station (UAV-BS) to stream videos from other flying UAV-users (UAV-UEs) through the uplink. Due to the mobility of the UAV-BS and UAV-UEs, it is important to determine the optimal movements and transmission powers for UAV-BSs and UAV-UEs in real-time, so as to maximize the data rate of video transmission with smoothness and low latency, while mitigating the interference according to the dynamics in fire areas and wireless channel conditions. In this paper, we co-design the video resolution, the movement, and the power control of UAV-BS and UAV-UEs to maximize the Quality of Experience (QoE) of real-time video streaming. To learn the Deep Q-Network (DQN) and Actor-Critic (AC) to maximize the QoE of video transmission from all UAV-UEs to a single UAVBS. Simulation results show the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm in terms of the QoE, delay and video smoothness as compared to the Greedy algorithm.

Abstract:Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technologies have garnered significant attention, particularly in the context of UAV-assisted wireless networks, which are seen as a pivotal component in the development of Sixth-Generation (6G) mobile communication systems. In this research, we delve into the realm of UAV-assisted wireless communication networks, where a single UAV efficiently caters to numerous random mobile users on the ground. Our focus lies in optimizing user movement tracking, beamforming, and UAV trajectory to maximize the data transmission rates for users within a specified time frame, all while adhering to stringent power constraints and the UAV's limited flight range. We harness the power of deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to monitor mobile users and predict the ever-changing channel state information. As beamforming and UAV trajectory adjustments operate on different timescales, we introduce a dual-layer deep unfolding network to fine-tune the transmit beamformer and UAV trajectory simultaneously. The outcomes of our simulations demonstrate the effectiveness and commendable performance of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Aim: Among a large number of products that support communication, there is one called space air ground integrated networks (SAGIN's), which is the most commonly used to support users in rural and emergency situations. Typicaly in emergency situations SAGIN's use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in their air layer to temporarily support the ground users. Although the cost of UAVs is lower than that of traditional base stations, and their actions are more flexible, but their battery life problems lead to frequent charging of drones, resulting in many resource losses and unable to provide communication support. In order to mitigate the issues, novel optimization algorithms need to be developed to support the ground users. Methods: In this work, we develop a grid-based deep learning method using the LSTM model to estimate the number of ground users as vehicles in each area, and developed an optimization algorithm to minimize the number of UAVs needed to the user's and meanwhile to satisfy quality of service (QoS) requirements. For optimization, we mainly use the Linear Optimization Tools and an objective function has been developed using density predicted and SINR data to achieve acceptable QoS. Results: The simulation results shows that this approach has improved the quality of the communication by 50%. Conclusion: Using unique grid technique and the LSTM machine learning model, the user densities on each partitioned grid is determined. Finally, a linear optimization algorithm is developed based on the user density to determine the lowest number of UAVs to support the users in each grid while maintaining the QoS.

Abstract:Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are emerging as important users of next-generation cellular networks. By operating in the sky, UAV users experience very different radio conditions than terrestrial users, due to factors such as strong Line-of-Sight (LoS) channels (and interference) and Base Station (BS) antenna misalignment. As a consequence, the UAVs may experience significant degradation to their received quality of service, particularly when they are moving and are subject to frequent handovers. The solution is to allow the UAV to be aware of its surrounding environment, and intelligently connect into the cellular network taking advantage of this awareness. In this paper we present REgression and deep Q-learning for Intelligent UAV cellular user to Base station Association (REQIBA), a solution that allows a UAV flying over an urban area to intelligently connect to underlying BSs, using information about the received signal powers, the BS locations, and the surrounding building topology. We demonstrate how REQIBA can as much as double the total UAV throughput, when compared to heuristic association schemes similar to those commonly used by terrestrial users. We also evaluate how environmental factors such as UAV height, building density, and throughput loss due to handovers impact the performance of our solution.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) can effectively work as temporary base station or access point in the air to transfer/receive data to/from ground terminals (GTs). However, UAV-GT links might be blocked by ground obstacles, like buildings in urban area, leading to a poor performance on data transferring rate. To address this problem, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), as a promising technique, can intelligently reflect the received signals between UAV and GT to significantly enhance the communication quality. Under this deployment of RIS-assisted UAV, we intend to jointly optimize the 3D-space of the UAV and the phase-shift of the RIS to maximize the data transferring rate of the UAV, while minimizing the UAV propulsion energy. The joint problem is non-convex in its original form and difficult to be timely solved by using traditional method, like successive convex approximation (SCA). Therefore, to facilitate the online decision making to this joint problem, we leverage deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to learn the near-optimal solution, and the well known Double Deep Q-Network (DDQN) and Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) algorithms are ultilized. Numerical results show that DRL can effectively improve the energy-efficiency performance of the RIS-Assisted UAV system, compared with benchmark solutions.

Abstract:This letter proposes a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided full-duplex unmanned aerial vehicle (FD-UAV) communication system. The FD-UAV performs its mission to communicate with an uplink (UL) user and a downlink (DL) user simultaneously over the same time-frequency dimension. The RIS is deployed to enhance the signal strength to the UL and DL users while suppressing the co-channel interference (CCI) from the user side. We aim to maximize the weighted sum rate of UL and DL transmissions by jointly optimizing the transmit power of the UL user, RIS’s phase-shift, and UAV trajectory. Although the formulated problem is difficult to solve due to its joint non-convexity, we propose an efficient algorithm based on the successive convex approximation and fractional programming techniques to solve the problem suboptimally. Simulation results show that the proposed RIS-aided communication system can achieve a significant sum rate gain over various bechmark schemes.

Improving UAV Communication in Cell Free MIMO Using a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

Abstract:Communication with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in current terrestrial networks suffers from poor signal strength due to the down-tilt of the access points (APs) that are optimized to serve ground users ends (GUEs). To solve this, one could tilt the AP antenna upwards or allocate more power to serve the UAV. However, this negatively affects GUE downlink (DL) rates. In this paper, we propose to solve this challenge using a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to enhance the UAV communication while preserving the 3GPP- prescribed downwards antenna tilt and potentially improving the DL performance of the GUE. We show that under conjugate beamforming (CB) precoding and proper power split between GUEs and the UAV at the APs, an RIS with phase-shifts configured to reflect radio signals towards the UAV can significantly improve the UAV DL throughput while simultaneously benefiting the GUEs. The presented numerical results show that the RIS- aided system can serve a UAV with a required data rate while improving the GUEs DL performance relative to that in a CF- MIMO system without a UAV and an RIS. We support this conclusion through simulations under a varying numbers of RIS reflecting elements, UAV heights, and power split factor.

Abstract:The advent of fifth generation (5G) networks has opened new avenues for enhancing connectivity, particularly in challenging environments like remote areas or disaster-struck regions. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been identified as a versatile tool in this context, particularly for improving network performance through the Integrated access and backhaul (IAB) feature of 5G. However, existing approaches to UAV-assisted network enhancement face limitations in dynamically adapting to varying user locations and network demands. This paper introduces a novel approach leveraging deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to optimize UAV placement in real-time, dynamically adjusting to changing network conditions and user requirements. Our method focuses on the intricate balance between fronthaul and backhaul links, a critical aspect often overlooked in current solutions. The unique contribution of this work lies in its ability to autonomously position UAVs in a way that not only ensures robust connectivity to ground users but also maintains seamless integration with central network infrastructure. Through various simulated scenarios, we demonstrate how our approach effectively addresses these challenges, enhancing coverage and network performance in critical areas. This research fills a significant gap in UAV-assisted 5G networks, providing a scalable and adaptive solution for future mobile networks.

Abstract:An air-to-ground downlink communication network consisting of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is proposed. In conjunction with a resource allocation strategy, the system’s energy efficiency is improved. Specifically, the UAV equipped with a RIS starts from an initial location, and an energy-efficient unmanned aerial vehicle deployment (EEUD) algorithm is deployed to jointly optimize the UAV trajectory, RIS phase shifts, and BS transmit power, so as to obtain a quasi-optimal deployment location and hence improve the energy efficiency. First, the RIS phase shifts are optimized by using the block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm to deal with the nonconvex inequality constraint, and then integrated with the Dinkelbach algorithm to address the resource allocation problem of the BS transmit power. Finally, for solving the UAV trajectory optimization problem, the complex objective function is transformed into a convex function, and the optimal UAV flight trajectory is obtained. Our simulation results show that the quasi-optimal deployment location obtained by the EEUD algorithm is superior to other deployment strategies in energy efficiency. Moreover, the instantaneous energy efficiency of the UAVs along the trajectory of searching the deployment location is better than other comparison trajectories. Furthermore, the RIS-assisted multi-user air-to-ground communication network can offer up to 145% improvement in energy efficiency over the traditional amplify-and-forward (AF) relay.

Abstract:Over the last few years, drone base station (DBS) technology has been recognized as a promising solution to the problem of network design for wireless communication systems, due to its highly flexible deployment and dynamic mobility features. This article focuses on the 3-D mobility control of the DBS to boost transmission coverage and network connectivity. We propose a dynamic and scalable control strategy for drone mobility using deep reinforcement learning (DRL). The design goal is to maximize communication coverage and network connectivity for multiple real-time users over a time horizon. The proposed method functions according to the received signals of mobile users, without the information of user locations. It is divided into two hierarchical stages. First, a time-series convolutional neural network (CNN)-based link quality estimation model is used to determine the link quality at each timeslot. Second, a deep -learning algorithm is applied to control the movement of the DBS in hotspot areas to meet user requirements. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves significant network performance in terms of both communication coverage and network throughput in a dynamic environment, compared with the -learning algorithm.

Abstract:To boost the performance of wireless communication networks, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) aided communications have drawn dramatically attention due to their flexibility in establishing the line of sight (LoS) communications. However, with the blockage in the complex urban environment, and due to the movement of UAVs and mobile users, the directional paths can be occasionally blocked by trees and high-rise buildings. Intelligent reflection surfaces (IRSs) that can reflect signals to generate virtual LoS paths are capable of providing stable communications and serving wider coverage. This is the first paper that exploits a three-dimensional geometry dynamic channel model in IRS- assisted UAV-enabled communication system. Moreover, we develop a novel deep learning based channel tracking algorithm consisting of two modules: channel pre-estimation and channel tracking. A deep neural network with off-line training is designed for denoising in the pre-estimation module. Moreover, for channel tracking, a stacked bi-directional long short term memory (Stacked Bi-LSTM) is developed based on a framework that can trace back historical time sequence together with bidirectional structure over multiple stacked layers. Simulations have shown that the proposed channel tracking algorithm requires fewer epochs to convergence compared to benchmark algorithms. It also demonstrates that the proposed algorithm is superior to different benchmarks with small pilot overheads and comparable computation complexity.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) play a critical role in radio surveillance to decipher malicious messages, thanks to their flexibility, mobility, and likely line-of-sight (LoS) to ground targets. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can potentially create radio surveillance channels towards the UAVs by passively configuring the radio environments without raising suspicion. This paper presents a new deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-driven framework for radio surveillance, where a fixed-wing UAV is employed to acquire the radio fingerprint of a suspicious transmitter (Tx) with the aid of a benign RIS. A new Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic policy gradient (TD3) model is designed to allow the UAV to learn its trajectory and the RIS configuration based on its observed transmit rate of the suspicious Tx, eliminating the need for channel state information to and from the RIS. The novel contributions include the consideration of the fixed-wing UAV, and the action and reward designed to capture the mobility constraint of the UAV. Simulations demonstrate that the new approach offers the UAV monitor an exceptional and reliable radio surveillance capability, while keeping a desired distance from the UAV to the Tx. The use of the RIS allows for significant improvements of over 37% and 59% in the eavesdropping success probability and average eavesdropping rate, respectively.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been successfully adopted to enhance the flexibility and robustness of wireless communication networks. And recently, the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology has been paid increasing attention to improve the throughput of the fifth-generation (5G) millimeter-wave (mmWave) wireless communication. In this work, we propose an RIS-outfitted UAV (RISoUAV) to secure an uninterrupted line-of-sight (LoS) link with a ground moving target (MT). The MT can be an emergency ambulance and need a secure wireless communication link for continuous monitoring and diagnosing the health condition of a patient, which is vital for delivering critical patient care. In this light, real-time communication is required for sending various clinical multimedia data including videos, medical images, and vital signs. This significant target is achievable thanks to the 5G wireless communication assisted with RISoUAV. A two-stage optimization method is proposed to optimize the RISoUAV trajectory limited to UAV motion and LoS constraints. At the first stage, the optimal tube path of the RISoUAV is determined by taking into account the energy consumption, instant LoS link, and UAV speed/acceleration constraints. At the second stage, an accurate RISoUAV trajectory is obtained by considering the communication channel performance and passive beamforming. Simulation results show the accuracy and effectiveness of the method.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted communications is a promising solution to improve the performance of future wireless networks, where UAVs are deployed as base stations for enhancing the quality of service (QoS) provided to ground users when traditional terrestrial base stations are unavailable or not sufficient. An effective framework is proposed in this paper to manage the dynamic movement of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in response to ground user mobility, with the objective to maximize the sum data rate of the ground users. First, we discuss the relationship between the air-to-ground (A2G) path loss (PL) and the location of UAVs. Then a deep Q-network (DQN) based method is proposed to adjust the locations of UAVs to maximize the sum data rate of the user equipment (UE). Finally, simulation results show that the proposed method is capable of adjusting UAV locations in a real-time condition to improve the QoS of the entire network.
