Abstract:What is vocational learning? It refers to education and training that focuses on acquiring practical skills and knowledge directly related to specific jobs or careers. All over the world, it is unfortunate that a person with a disability is less likely to be employed than one without. AI has served as an important tool in providing assistive technologies for persons with disabilities in vocational learning. Luckily, design thinking which is an extension of innovation that allows you to design solutions for end users with a single problem statement in mind was developed. In this research we sought out ways in which AI has helped those with disabilities. Are the AIs really effective? Do they come with any challenges? Can these problems be solved? We discovered some challenges encountered through the use of these AI and found a way to solve them. By leveraging AI algorithms, researchers and developers can create cost-effective solutions that cater to a wide range of disabilities. This includes AI-powered prosthetics, smart glasses for visual assistance, AI voice technologies, such as Siri, Alexa, accessibility tools such as screen readers, captioning services and other assistive devices that enhance mobility, communication, and overall independence and autonomy. AI can track and analyse an individual’s progress in vocational training then adaptive learning platforms can adjust the difficulty and pace of training materials based on the learner’s performance and progress. Incorporating AI into vocational training can significantly enhance accessibility, individualised support, and the overall learning experience for people with disabilities. It empowers them to acquire the skills and knowledge they need to pursue meaningful careers and contributes to greater inclusivity in the workforce.
Artificial intelligence in physical rehabilitation: A systematic review

Abstract:Background: Physical disabilities become more common with advancing age. Rehabilitation restores function, maintaining independence for longer. However, the poor availability and accessibility of rehabilitation limits its clinical impact. Artificial Intelligence (AI) guided interventions have improved many domains of healthcare, but whether rehabilitation can benefit from AI remains unclear. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of AI-supported physical rehabilitation technology tested in the clinical setting to understand: 1) availability of AI-supported physical rehabilitation technology; 2) its clinical effect; 3) and the barriers and facilitators to implementation. We searched in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Science Citation Index (Web of Science), CIRRIE (now NARIC), and OpenGrey. Results: We identified 9054 articles and included 28 projects. AI solutions spanned five categories: App-based systems, robotic devices that replace function, robotic devices that restore function, gaming systems and wearables. We identified five randomised controlled trials (RCTs), which evaluated outcomes relating to physical function, activity, pain, and health-related quality of life. The clinical effects were inconsistent. Implementation barriers included technology literacy, reliability, and user fatigue. Enablers included greater access to rehabilitation programmes, remote monitoring of progress, reduction in manpower requirements and lower cost. Conclusion: Application of AI in physical rehabilitation is a growing field, but clinical effects have yet to be studied rigorously. Developers must strive to conduct robust clinical evaluations in the real-world setting and appraise post implementation experiences.
Breaking Barriers-The Intersection of AI and Assistive Technology in Autism Care: A Narrative Review

Abstract:(Background) Autism increasingly requires a multidisciplinary approach that can effectively harmonize the realms of diagnosis and therapy, tailoring both to the individual. Assistive technologies (ATs) play an important role in this context and hold significant potential when integrated with artificial intelligence (AI). (Objective) The objective of this study is to analyze the state of integration of AI with ATs in autism through a review. (Methods) A review was conducted on PubMed and Scopus, applying a standard checklist and a qualification process. The outcome reported 22 studies, including 7 reviews. (Key Content and Findings) The results reveal an early yet promising interest in integrating AI into autism assistive technologies. Exciting developments are currently underway at the intersection of AI and robotics, as well as in the creation of wearable automated devices like smart glasses. These innovations offer substantial potential for enhancing communication, interaction, and social engagement for individuals with autism. Presently, researchers are prioritizing innovation over establishing a solid presence within the healthcare domain, where issues such as regulation and acceptance demand increased attention. (Conclusions) As the field continues to evolve, it becomes increasingly clear that AI will play a pivotal role in bridging various domains, and integrated ATs with AI are positioned to act as crucial connectors.
Artificial Intelligence-Based Wearable Robotic Exoskeletons for Upper Limb Rehabilitation: A Review

Abstract:Processing and control systems based on artificial intelligence (AI) have progressively improved mobile robotic exoskeletons used in upper-limb motor rehabilitation. This systematic review presents the advances and trends of those technologies. A literature search was performed in Scopus, IEEE Xplore, Web of Science, and PubMed using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) methodology with three main inclusion criteria: (a) motor or neuromotor rehabilitation for upper limbs, (b) mobile robotic exoskeletons, and (c) AI. The period under investigation spanned from 2016 to 2020, resulting in 30 articles that met the criteria. The literature showed the use of artificial neural networks (40%), adaptive algorithms (20%), and other mixed AI techniques (40%). Additionally, it was found that in only 16% of the articles, developments focused on neuromotor rehabilitation. The main trend in the research is the development of wearable robotic exoskeletons (53%) and the fusion of data collected from multiple sensors that enrich the training of intelligent algorithms. There is a latent need to develop more reliable systems through clinical validation and improvement of technical characteristics, such as weight/dimensions of devices, in order to have positive impacts on the rehabilitation process and improve the interactions among patients, teams of health professionals, and technology.

Various disabilities are addressed and the most recent assistive technologies that enhance communication and education of disabled children, as well as the AI technologies that have enabled their development, are presented. The paper summarizes with an AI perspective on future assistive technologies and ethical concerns arising from the use of such cutting-edge communication and learning technologies for children with disabilities.

Abstract:Lower‐limb assistive devices can make independent life possible for people with neurological impairments if their associated issues can be addressed. This paper views the studies meant to resolve some of the challenges of intelligent motion planning and control of lower‐limb assistive devices. Also, it provides a roadmap for future studies that can help facilitate using these systems in home‐based assistance. Healthcare systems are burdened by mobility impairments resulting from aging and neurological conditions. One of the recent advances in robotics is lower limb assistive/rehabilitative devices that can make independent living possible. Nonetheless, some limitations need to be addressed before robotics can be used in home‐based applications. This paper describes the current state of the art in intelligent motion planning and control of lower limb assistive devices, which have addressed some of these challenges. Adaptable central pattern generators and the divergent component of motion are introduced as methods for personalized motion planning based on physical human–robot interaction (pHRI). Uncertainty analysis for neural networks is introduced to increase safety in motion planning based on pHRI. For the case that a user cannot apply physical interaction, a reinforcement‐learning‐based approach is introduced to switch between different modes of walking based on the user's input via a push button embedded in a walker. Moreover, a smart walker is introduced as a device that can be synchronized with the lower limb exoskeleton to assist users with their daily activities. Also, a roadmap for future steps that can make lower limb assistive/rehabilitative devices a good fit for home use is introduced.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence technologies are considered crucial in supporting a decentralized model of care in which therapeutic interventions are provided from a distance. In the last years, various approaches have been proposed to support remote monitoring and smart assistance in rehabilitation services. Comprehensive state-of-the-art of machine learning methods and applications is presented in this review. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature search strategy was led in PubMed, Scopus, and IEEE Xplore databases. The search yielded 519 records, resulting in 35 articles included in this study. Supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms were identified. Unobtrusive capture motion technologies have been identified as strategic applications to support remote and smart monitoring. The main tasks addressed by algorithms were activity recognition, movement classification, and clinical status prediction. Some authors evidenced drawbacks concerning the low generalizability of the results retrieved. Artificial intelligence-based applications are likely to impact the delivery of decentralized rehabilitation services by providing broad access to sustained and high-quality therapy. Future efforts are needed to validate artificial intelligence technologies in specific clinical populations and evaluate results reliability in remote conditions and home-based settings.

Facilitators and Barriers of Artificial Intelligence Applications in Rehabilitation: A Mixed-Method Approach

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has been used in physical therapy diagnosis and management for various impairments. Physical therapists (PTs) need to be able to utilize the latest innovative treatment techniques to improve the quality of care. The study aimed to describe PTs' views on AI and investigate multiple factors as indicators of AI knowledge, attitude, and adoption among PTs. Moreover, the study aimed to identify the barriers to using AI in rehabilitation. Two hundred and thirty-six PTs participated voluntarily in the study. A concurrent mixed-method design was used to document PTs' opinions regarding AI deployment in rehabilitation. A self-administered survey consisting of several aspects, including demographic, knowledge, uses, advantages, impacts, and barriers limiting AI utilization in rehabilitation, was used. A total of 63.3% of PTs reported that they had not experienced any kind of AI applications at work. The major factors predicting a higher level of AI knowledge among PTs were being a non-academic worker (OR = 1.77 [95% CI; 1.01 to 3.12], p = 0.04), being a senior PT (OR = 2.44, [95%CI: 1.40 to 4.22], p = 0.002), and having a Master/Doctorate degree (OR = 1.97, [95%CI: 1.11 to 3.50], p = 0.02). However, the cost and resources of AI were the major reported barriers to adopting AI-based technologies. The study highlighted a remarkable dearth of AI knowledge among PTs. AI and advanced knowledge in technology need to be urgently transferred to PTs.

Abstract:More than 1 billion people in the world are estimated to experience significant disability. These disabilities can impact people's ability to independently conduct activities of daily living, including ambulating, eating, dressing, taking care of personal hygiene, and more. Mobile and manipulator robots, which can move about human environments and physically interact with objects and people, have the potential to assist people with disabilities in activities of daily living. Although the vision of physically assistive robots has motivated research across subfields of robotics for decades, such robots have only recently become feasible in terms of capabilities, safety, and price. More and more research involves end-to-end robotic systems that interact with people with disabilities in real-world settings. In this article, we survey papers about physically assistive robots intended for people with disabilities from top conferences and journals in robotics, human–computer interactions, and accessible technology, to identify the general trends and research methodologies. We then dive into three specific research themes—interaction interfaces, levels of autonomy, and adaptation—and present frameworks for how these themes manifest across physically assistive robot research. Abstract:Augmented Reality (AR) technologies hold immense potential for revolutionizing the way individuals with disabilities interact with the world. AR systems can provide real-time assistance and support by overlaying digital information over the physical environment based on the requirements of the use, hence addressing different types of disabilities. Through an in-depth analysis of four case studies, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current-state-of-the-art in AR assistive technologies for individuals with disabilities, highlighting their potential to assist and transform their lives. The findings show the significance that AR has made to bridge the accessibility gap, while also discussing the challenges faced and ethical considerations associated with the implementation across the various cases. This is done through theory analysis, practical examples, and future projections that will motivate and seek to inspire further innovation in this very relevant area of exploration.

Abstract:Robotics and artificial intelligence have marked the beginning of a new era in the care and integration of people with disabilities, helping to promote their independence, autonomy and social participation. In this area, bioethical reflection assumes a key role at anthropological, ethical, legal and socio-political levels. However, there is currently a substantial diversity of opinions and ethical arguments, as well as a lack of consensus on the use of assistive robots, while the focus remains predominantly on the usability of products. The article presents a bioethical analysis that highlights the risk arising from using embodied artificial intelligence according to a functionalist model. Failure to recognize disability as the result of a complex interplay between health, personal and situational factors could result in potential damage to the intrinsic dignity of the person and human relations with healthcare workers. Furthermore, the danger of discrimination in accessing these new technologies is highlighted, emphasizing the need for an ethical approach that considers the social and moral implications of implementing embodied AI in the field of rehabilitation.

Abstract:Over the past few years, there has been a noticeable surge in efforts to design novel tools and approaches that incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into rehabilitation of persons with lower-limb impairments, using robotic exoskeletons. The potential benefits include the ability to implement personalized rehabilitation therapies by leveraging AI for robot control and data analysis, facilitating personalized feedback and guidance. Despite this, there is a current lack of literature review specifically focusing on AI applications in lower-limb rehabilitative robotics. To address this gap, our work aims at performing a review of 37 peer-reviewed papers. This review categorizes selected papers based on robotic application scenarios or AI methodologies. Additionally, it uniquely contributes by providing a detailed summary of input features, AI model performance, enrolled populations, exoskeletal systems used in the validation process, and specific tasks for each paper. The innovative aspect lies in offering a clear understanding of the suitability of different algorithms for specific tasks, intending to guide future developments and support informed decision-making in the realm of lower-limb exoskeleton and AI applications.

Abstract:Physical rehabilitation and exercise training have emerged as promising solutions for improving health, restoring function, and preserving quality of life in populations that face disparate health challenges related to disability. Despite the immense potential for rehabilitation and exercise to help people with disabilities live longer, healthier, and more independent lives, people with disabilities can experience physical, psychosocial, environmental, and economic barriers that limit their ability to participate in rehabilitation, exercise, and other physical activities. Together, these barriers contribute to health inequities in people with disabilities, by disproportionately limiting their ability to participate in health-promoting physical activities, relative to people without disabilities. Therefore, there is great need for research and innovation focusing on the development of strategies to expand accessibility and promote participation in rehabilitation and exercise programs for people with disabilities. Here, we discuss how cutting-edge technologies related to telecommunications, wearables, virtual and augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing are providing new opportunities to improve accessibility in rehabilitation and exercise for people with disabilities. In addition, we highlight new frontiers in digital health technology and emerging lines of scientific research that will shape the future of precision care strategies for people with disabilities.

Abstract:A locally corrected Nyström discretization of the magnetostatic volume integral equation is derived for the analysis of magnetic materials. The integral equation formulation incorporates both higher-order meshes and higher-order basis functions. A set of arbitrary order, hexahedral basis functions are presented. The formulation is applied to a set of canonical problems as well as TEAM Workshop problem number 13. Error convergence with respect to basis function order, mesh density, and mesh order is investigated, and results corroborate the formulation.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are increasingly able to learn from larger and more complex data, thus allowing clinicians and scientists to gain new insights from the information they collect about their patients every day. In rehabilitation medicine, AI can be used to find patterns in huge amounts of healthcare data. These patterns can then be leveraged at the individual level, to design personalized care strategies and interventions to optimize each patient’s outcomes. However, building effective AI tools requires many careful considerations about how we collect and handle data, how we train the models, and how we interpret results. In this perspective, we discuss some of the current opportunities and challenges for AI in rehabilitation. We first review recent trends in AI for the screening, diagnosis, treatment, and continuous monitoring of disease or injury, with a special focus on the different types of healthcare data used for these applications. We then examine potential barriers to designing and integrating AI into the clinical workflow, and we propose an end-to-end framework to address these barriers and guide the development of effective AI for rehabilitation. Finally, we present ideas for future work to pave the way for AI implementation in real-world rehabilitation practices.

Abstract:Health Informatics Journal, Volume 30, Issue 3, July-September 2024. Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance life experiences and present challenges for people with disabilities. Objectives: This study aims to investigate the relationship between AI and disability, exploring the potential benefits and challenges of using AI for people with disabilities. Methods: A systematic scoping review was conducted using eight online databases; 45 scholarly articles from the last 5 years were identified and selected for thematic analysis. Results: The review's findings revealed AI's potential to enhance healthcare; however, it showed a high prevalence of a narrow medical model of disability and an ableist perspective in AI research. This raises concerns about the perpetuation of biases and discrimination against individuals with disabilities in the development and deployment of AI technologies. Conclusion: We recommend shifting towards a social model of disability, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, addressing AI bias and discrimination, prioritizing privacy and security in AI development, focusing on accessibility and usability, investing in education and training, and advocating for robust policy and regulatory frameworks. The review emphasizes the urgent need for further research to ensure that AI benefits all members of society equitably and that future AI systems are designed with inclusivity and accessibility as core principles.

Abstract:This review aims to provide a systematic analysis of the literature focused on the use of intelligent control systems in robotics for physical rehabilitation, identifying trends in recent research and comparing the effectiveness of intelligence used in control, with the aim of determining important factors in robot-assisted rehabilitation and how intelligent controller design can improve them. Seven electronic research databases were searched for articles published in the years 2015 – 2022 with articles selected based on relevance to the subject area of intelligent control systems in rehabilitation robotics. It was found that the most common use of intelligent algorithms for control is improving traditional control strategies with optimization and learning techniques. Intelligent algorithms are also commonly used in sensor output mapping, model construction, and for various data learning purposes. Experimental results show that intelligent controllers consistently outperform non-intelligent controllers in terms of transparency, tracking accuracy, and adaptability. Active participation of the patients and lowered interaction forces are consistently mentioned as important factors in improving the rehabilitation outcome as well as the patient experience. However, there are limited examples of studies presenting experimental results with impaired participants suffering limited range of motion, so the effectiveness of therapy provided by these systems is often difficult to quantify. A lack of universal evaluation criteria also makes it difficult to compare control systems outside of articles which use their own comparison criteria.

Abstract:Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerges as a transformative force, offering novel solutions to enhance medical education and mentorship in the specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). AI is a transformative technology that is being adopted in nearly every industry, In medicine, the use of AI in medical education is growing. AI may also assist with some of the challenges of mentorship, including the limited availability of experienced mentors, and the logistical difficulties of time and geography are some constraints of traditional mentorship. In this commentary, we discuss various models of AI in medical education and mentoring, including expert systems, conversational agents, and hybrid models. These models enable tailored guidance, broaden outreach within the PM&R community, and support continuous learning and development. Abstract:Changes in the fine structure of the hyphae were studied in the course of spore formation by Micropolyspora fascifera. Sporulating hyphae differ from vegetative hyphae by a less dense cytoplasm, a large zone of the nucleoid with distinctly fibrillar structure, and a thin layerless cell wall. Spore formation is accompanied with autolysis of the vegetative hyphae, which consists in vacuolization of the hyphae and appearance of a large number of tubular membrane structures within them. Spores are formed, like in Actinomyces spp., by simultaneous division of the hyphae with septa; the structure of sporulating septa is similar to that of the fragmenting mycelium in Nocardia; the structure of mature spores is similar to that in some Actinomyces spp. Therefore, M. fascifera differs from other Micropolyspora spp. not only by the chemical composition of the cells (the presence of nocardiomicolic acids) but also by their structure. Taxonomic position of the species is discussed.
