Abstract:Population declines of vertebrates are common, but rebuilding marine life may be possible. We assessed trends in sea turtle numbers globally, building 61 time series of abundance extending beyond 2015, representing monitoring in >1200 years. Increases were widespread with significant upward trends, no significant change, and significant downward trends in 28, 28, and 5 time series, respectively. For example, annual nest numbers increased between 1980 and 2018 from around 4,000 to 16,000 for green turtles at Aldabra (Seychelles, Indian Ocean) and between 2008 and 2020 from around 500 to 35,000 for loggerhead turtles in Sal (Cape Verde, north Atlantic). However, conservation concerns remain. Major populations may experience declines, such as loggerhead turtles in Oman, while previous upward trends can be reversed, as with green turtles nesting at Tortuguero (Costa Rica, Caribbean). Further, decreases in abundance were evident in several leatherback turtle time series. These concerns show there is no room for complacency for sea turtle conservation.

Abstract:Somatic growth is an integrated, individual-based response to environmental conditions, especially in ectotherms. Growth dynamics of large, mobile animals are particularly useful as bio-indicators of environmental change at regional scales. We assembled growth rate data from throughout the West Atlantic for green turtles, Chelonia mydas, which are long-lived, highly migratory, primarily herbivorous mega-consumers that may migrate over hundreds to thousands of kilometers. Our dataset, the largest ever compiled for sea turtles, has 9690 growth increments from 30 sites from Bermuda to Uruguay from 1973 to 2015. Using generalized additive mixed models, we evaluated covariates that could affect growth rates; body size, diet, and year have significant effects on growth. Growth increases in early years until 1999, then declines by 26% to 2015. The temporal (year) effect is of particular interest because two carnivorous species of sea turtles—hawksbills, Eretmochelys imbricata, and loggerheads, Caretta caretta—exhibited similar significant declines in growth rates starting in 1997 in the West Atlantic, based on previous studies. These synchronous declines in productivity among three sea turtle species across a trophic spectrum provide strong evidence that an ecological regime shift (ERS) in the Atlantic is driving growth dynamics. The ERS resulted from a synergy of the 1997/1998 El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO)—the strongest on record—combined with an unprecedented warming rate over the last two to three decades. Further support is provided by the strong correlations between annualized mean growth rates of green turtles and both sea surface temperatures (SST) in the West Atlantic for years of declining growth rates (r = −.94) and the Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI) for all years (r = .74). Granger-causality analysis also supports the latter finding. We discuss multiple stressors that could reinforce and prolong the effect of the ERS. Abstract:Developing conservation strategies for highly migratory marine species relies on understanding their spatial distributions. Nesting populations of female loggerhead ( Caretta caretta ) turtles typically travel from widely dispersed foraging areas and make use of common internesting areas between nesting events. Protection of these areas is essential to the conservation of this species. In this study, we used satellite tracking and behavioral switching state-space movement modeling to examine the internesting use-areas, migration patterns, and foraging area distribution of a previously uninvestigated nesting loggerhead population in southeast Florida. While these turtles spent much of their internesting period close to their nesting site, only 17.4% of the identified internesting area is within the boundaries currently designated under the US Endangered Species Act as critical loggerhead ‘nearshore reproductive habitat’. Additionally, 72% of turtles in this study (17 of 21) that were tracked to foraging grounds have foraging home ranges outside of the USA, with 62% of turtles (n = 13) in The Bahamas. Considering the proximity of their internesting areas to a large human population center and their largely international foraging distribution, this population could benefit from expanding federally designated critical habitat, along with developing collaborative conservation strategies between the USA and The Bahamas.

Abstract:Sea turtles are a taxon of conservation concern and are highly migratory, exposing them to a variety of threats (e.g., fisheries bycatch, direct harvest) across their lifetime. Understanding the abundance of nesting females, hatchling production, and migratory movements - three of the most basic biological data needs for this species group - is imperative for population assessment. This study summarizes novel data most relevant to population assessments of the endangered central south Pacific (CSP) green turtle ( Chelonia mydas ) population, determined from annual rapid assessment surveys (mean survey duration=7.6 days year -1 , n=61 survey days over 8 nesting seasons) and satellite telemetry at Rose Atoll, American Samoa, from 2012 to 2019. A minimum of 138 unique females nested in the Rose Atoll National Wildlife Refuge (RANWR) over the study period with 218 total females observed. Satellite tracks of post-nesting females suggest Fiji (n=33/48, 70.2%) is the primary foraging ground for turtles nesting at RANWR, though other areas throughout the south Pacific Ocean are also important. Limited data suggest hatchling production was high (average hatching success=92.3%) and nest temperature data collected from 2017-2019 suggest primary sex ratios were likely balanced during this time. These are positive signs for the resilience of this nesting population, but climate change poses threats to RANWR and other low-lying tropical islands throughout the central south Pacific, as nesting areas are potentially exposed to beach erosion, tidal inundations, and increasing temperatures leading to sex bias and embryonic death.

Abstract:Brazil's second-largest reproductive colony of loggerhead turtles ( Caretta caretta ) has a long history of overexploitation, with its temporal ecological dynamics still unknown. This study investigates changes in the average size of females and post-maturity somatic growth rates in marked and recaptured loggerhead turtles at a breeding site over a 33-year period (1982–2014). Loggerhead curved carapace length (CCL) was evaluated over the course of the study using a generalized additive model (GAM) with a Gaussian family distribution and time smoothed. Includes the nesting year and the CCL for a total of 2.359 female loggerhead turtles. The overall average length of females was 99.4 cm ± 5.8 (mean ± SD). The results suggest that the CCL of females in the nesting area is decreasing. From 1982 to 1998, the mean CCL was 102.6 cm; from 1999 to 2014, the average length was 98.7 cm. There were no statistically significant differences in post-maturity growth rates among recaptured females, supporting the hypothesis of increased recruitment. The GAM results showed significant differences in the size structure changes of reproductive site females over time. The study highlights how a population parameter can be influenced by long-term conservation of feeding and nesting areas for sea turtles, resulting in a higher number of recruits. The curved carapace length serves as an important metric to describe population changes and raise awareness about future conservation challenges.

Abstract:Effective conservation of endangered species relies on the characterization of habitat use and tracking of long-term population trends, which can be especially challenging for marine species that migrate long distances and utilize a diversity of habitats throughout their lives. Since 2012, citizen science volunteers at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California, have been monitoring an urban population of East Pacific green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) that resides near the mouth of the San Gabriel River (SGR) in Southern California, USA, in order to gain insights about how the population uses this area. Here, we collate and analyze nine years of citizen science data, including observed sightings collected across 10 observation stations. Our results confirm that green sea turtles are frequently present around warm water effluent from power plants, similar to research results reported for other locations in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Importantly, observational data also show notable green sea turtle activity around the outfalls for a small wetland habitat bordering the SGR, highlighting the importance of wetland ecosystems as a key habitat and foraging area for this threatened population. Finally, our results showcase the benefits of using citizen science to monitor sea turtle populations in easily accessible nearshore habitats.

Abstract:For the Western Indian Ocean region, there is a significant knowledge gap regarding marine turtle nesting on the continental coast of East Africa. Here we present results from a long-term (2000–2020) community-based monitoring programme in and around Watamu Marine National Park, Kenya, covering 30 km of coastline (c. 6% of the national total). Conservation actions effectively protected nesting turtles and resulted in a near-total cessation of illegal egg harvesting in Watamu Marine National Park. Collected data indicate this is an important marine turtle nesting index site in Kenya and the wider region. Green turtle Chelonia mydas nests were most common (95%), followed by olive ridley turtles Lepidochelys olivacea (4%), with occasional nests of hawksbill Eretmochelys imbricata and leatherback turtles Dermochelys coriacea. Clutches per season increased significantly over the 20-year monitoring period for green turtles (50%) and showed a positive trend for olive ridley turtles. Watamu remains an area at risk from human pressures such as coastal development. Clutch distribution along the Watamu Marine National Park beach has shifted over time, probably because of coastal development and disturbance. Illegal take of adults and eggs continues in areas north and south of the Watamu Marine National Park, possibly slowing rates of recovery. Clutches deemed at risk were moved to a safe location within the National Park, and hatching success was high. Continued conservation efforts, including wider engagement with stakeholders to reduce human pressures, are needed to ensure the perpetuation of this nesting site.

Abstract:Temperature is often used to infer how climate influences wildlife distributions; yet, other parameters also contribute, separately and combined, with effects varying across geographical scales. Here, we used an unoccupied aircraft system to explore how environmental parameters affect the regional distribution of the terrestrial and marine breeding habitats of threatened loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Surveys spanned four years and ~620 km coastline of western Greece, encompassing low (<10 nests/km) to high (100–500 nests/km) density nesting areas. We recorded 2395 tracks left by turtles on beaches and 1928 turtles occupying waters adjacent to these beaches. Variation in beach track and inwater turtle densities was explained by temperature, offshore prevailing wind, and physical marine and terrestrial factors combined. The highest beach-track densities (400 tracks/km) occurred on beaches with steep slopes and higher sand temperatures, sheltered from prevailing offshore winds. The highest inwater turtle densities (270 turtles/km) occurred over submerged sandbanks, with warmer sea temperatures associated with offshore wind. Most turtles (90%) occurred over nearshore submerged sandbanks within 10 km of beaches supporting the highest track densities, showing the strong linkage between optimal marine and terrestrial environments for breeding. Our findings demonstrate the utility of UASs in surveying marine megafauna and environmental data at large scales and the importance of integrating multiple factors in climate change models to predict species distributions.

A Systematic Review of Population Monitoring Studies of Sea Turtles and Its Application to Conservation

Abstract:Sea turtles are keystone species in marine environments due to their essential role as seagrass grazers and population regulation of jellyfish and sponges in coral reefs. However, due to their predominant presence in coastal areas, sea turtle populations face significant threats due to the impact of human activities. In this systematic review, 655 peer-reviewed publications were analyzed to assess the extent of population monitoring for all seven sea turtle species. The analyses revealed that, although population monitoring studies have increased for sea turtles in the past four decades, these have been biased towards certain species and oceanic regions. Furthermore, sea turtle population monitoring has been undertaken primarily using field-based methods, with satellite tracking and nest surveys being the most commonly used methods; however, the implementation of genetic methods for population monitoring has increased since the 2000s. Direct conservation recommendations from this study include the urgent need to establish population monitoring studies in the Critically Endangered Kemp's ridley and hawksbill and the Data Deficient flatback. Furthermore, population monitoring programs should be implemented in Southeast Asia and Northern and Central Africa, where knowledge on sea turtle populations is still limited. Finally, due to the long-distance movements of sea turtles, we also advocate for international cooperation and collaboration of local communities to protect these ecologically important and iconic marine species.

Delayed Sino-nasal Complications of Radiotherapy for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Abstract:Objective There are only sporadic reports of delayed sino-nasal complications associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) treated with radiotherapy. These include choanal stenosis, osteoradionecrosis, chronic sinusitis, and intranasal synechiae. Most likely, these complications are underestimated as in many institutions nasal endoscopies in NPC patients are not performed routinely. The aim of this study was to identify the onset and incidence of delayed sino-nasal complications in NPC patients and their effect on quality of life (QOL). Study Design Case series with chart review. Setting Tertiary medical center. Subjects and Methods A retrospective chart review was performed on all patients treated for NPC in our institution between 1988 through 2009. The inclusion criteria required at least a 3-year follow-up without recurrence. Included patients were contacted prospectively and asked to fill a SNOT-16 questionnaire. Results Sixty-two patients were included in our review. There were 42 males and 20 females. The average age at onset was 42 years. The AJCC staging for T1, T2, T3, and T4 tumors was 22 (35%), 11 (18%), 18 (29%), and 11 (18%), respectively. Eleven patients (18%) suffered from chronic sinusitis. Nine patients (15%) developed choanal stenosis. Five patients (8%) developed osteoradionecrosis. Two patients suffered from nasal synechiae. Forty-eight patients completed the SNOT-16 questionnaire. Patients with choanal stenosis had the lowest QOL scores out of the cohort. Conclusion The incidence of delayed sino-nasal complications after radiation treatment for NPC is not negligible and should be kept in mind when addressing the quality of life of NPC survivors.
Regional differences in Kemp’s ridley sea turtle growth trajectories and expected age at maturation

Abstract:For species of conservation concern, somatic growth and age at maturation are key parameters in models used to evaluate population dynamics, as spatial and temporal variability in growth rates may be particularly important for predicting population recovery. Following an oceanic juvenile developmental stage, endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles Lepidochelys kempii occupy neritic habitats in 2 primary regions, the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) and along the US Atlantic coast. Results of prior studies suggest that somatic growth rates differ between these groups, which has the potential to influence maturation trajectories and relative reproductive contributions. To determine the nature and extent of potential regional differences, we conducted skeletal growth mark analysis (skeletochronology) with complementary annual bone growth increment-specific stable nitrogen isotope analysis that allowed delineation of oceanic-to-neritic habitat shifts for turtles stranded from 1993 to 2016. Results demonstrate that in the GoM, the oceanic-to-neritic habitat transition is associated with younger ages and faster somatic growth rates than in US Atlantic waters. Overall, US Atlantic somatic growth response was depressed relative to that in the GoM throughout all juvenile life stages, and this disparity persisted for more than 20 yr. This discrepancy translated into regional divergence in size-at-age relationships and maturation trajectories, with the prediction that US Atlantic Kemp’s ridleys would mature on average 2 to 3 yr later than their GoM counterparts. These analyses provide important baseline information on somatic growth rates and predicted age at maturation that can facilitate the evaluation of factors contributing to recent fluctuations in reproductive output for this endangered population.

Abstract:It has been widely demonstrated that air and sand temperatures influence the anatomy of sea turtle hatchlings. We examined the impact of precipitation during the nesting season on the hatchling body size of loggerhead and green turtles from 37 beaches worldwide. Longitudinal data collected between 2012 and 2018 from Florida (US) and from a sample on Bõa Vista Island (Cabo Verde) carried out in 2019 showed that loggerhead body size at hatching was negatively correlated with precipitation, while precipitation was not correlated with hatchling body size in green turtles. A meta-analysis revealed that precipitation is positively correlated with hatchling mass in loggerhead turtles, while it is positively correlated with straight carapace length and width in green turtle hatchlings. The strongest influence of precipitation was found in the middle of the incubation period of loggerhead turtles in Cabo Verde, and we posit that this is due to an increase in the uptake of water for embryonic growth. These findings highlight the great importance of understanding the correlated effects of regional environmental variables, such as precipitation, on the development of sea turtle hatchlings and will have an impact on the evaluation of ongoing conservation and climate change discussions.
COVID-19 disruption reveals mass-tourism pressure on nearshore sea turtle distributions and access to optimal breeding habitat

Abstract:Quantifying the extent to which animals detect and respond to human presence allows us to identify pressure (disturbance) and inform conservation management objectively; however, obtaining baselines against which to compare human impact is hindered in areas where human activities are already well established. For example, Zakynthos Island (Greece, Mediterranean) receives around 850,000 visitors each summer, while supporting an important loggerhead sea turtle rookery (~300 individuals/season). The coronavirus (COVID-19)-driven absence of tourism in May-June 2020 provided an opportunity to evaluate the distribution dynamics of this population in the absence (2020) vs. presence (2018 and 2019) of visitors using programmed unmanned aerial system (UAS) surveys. Ambient sea temperature transitioned from suboptimal for breeding in May to optimal in late June, with turtle distribution appearing to shift from shallow (to benefit from waters 3-5°C above ambient) to deeper waters in 2018 and 2019, but not 2020. The 2020 data set demonstrated that increased tourism pressure, not temperature, drives turtles offshore. Specifically, >50% of turtles remained within 100 m of shore at densities of 25-50 visitors/km, even when sea temperature rose, with 2018 and 2019 data supporting this trend. Reduced access to warmer, nearshore waters by tourism could delay the onset of nesting and increase the length of the egg maturation period between nesting events (internesting interval) at this site. A coastal refuge zone could be delimited in May-June where touristic infrastructure is minimal, but also where turtles frequently aggregate. In conclusion, sea turtles appear capable of perceiving changes in the level of human pressure at fine spatial and temporal scales and adjusting their distribution accordingly.

Abstract:This study presents a comprehensive assessment of green and hawksbill sea turtles in the Gulf of Guinea, combining 9 years of nesting area surveys with telemetry data. Our findings reveal promising signs of recovery for green and hawksbill turtles, driven by conservation efforts. Our research underscores the importance of effective conservation strategies, especially in the face of emerging threats, to protect these vital marine species and their ecosystems in the Eastern Atlantic. Sea turtles are critical components of marine ecosystems, and their conservation is important for Ocean Governance and Global Planet Health. However, there is limited knowledge of their ecology in the Gulf of Guinea. To fill this knowledge gap, this study presents the first integrative assessment of green and hawksbill turtles in the region, combining nesting surveys over 9 years and telemetry data, to offer insights into these population dynamics, and behaviours, including nesting preferences, morphological and reproductive parameters, diving patterns and inter‐nesting core‐use areas. Both green and hawksbill turtles are likely making a recovery on São Tomé, potentially driven by sustained conservation efforts. There are preliminary indications of recovery, but we interpret this cautiously. Coupled with satellite tracking, this study estimated that 482 to 736 green turtles and 135 to 217 hawksbills nest on the beaches of São Tomé. Their movements overlap significantly with a proposed Marine Protected Area (MPA), which suggests they may be well placed for conservation if managed appropriately. However, the presence of artisanal fisheries and emerging threats, such as sand mining and unregulated tourism, highlight the urgent need for robust management strategies that align global conservation objectives with local socioeconomic realities. This study significantly enhances our understanding of the ecology and conservation needs of the green and hawksbill turtles in the Gulf of Guinea. The insights gleaned here can contribute to the development of tailored conservation strategies that benefit these populations and the ecosystem services upon which they depend.

Abstract:Alterations have occurred and continue to manifest in the Earth's biota as a result of climate change. Animals exhibiting temperature dependent sex determination (TSD), including sea turtles, are perhaps most vulnerable to a warming of the Earth as highly skewed sex ratios can result, potentially leading to population extinction resulting from decreased male recruitment. Recent studies have begun to quantify climate change impacts to sea turtle populations, especially in terms of predicting effects on hatchling sex ratios. However, given the inherent difficulty in studying sex ratios at this life stage, a more accurate assessment of changes in population sex ratios might be derived by evaluating the juvenile portion of foraging aggregations. We investigated the long-term trend in sex ratio of a juvenile loggerhead (Caretta caretta) sea turtle population inhabiting Pamlico and Core Sounds, North Carolina, USA. We used plasma testosterone reference ranges measured using radioimmunoassay (RIA) to assign sex for 959 turtles and confirmed sex assignment of a subset (N = 58) of the sampled turtles through laparoscopic examination of their gonads. Our results demonstrate that for this particular population of loggerheads, sex ratios (3Females:1Male) had not significantly changed over a 10 year period (1998-2007), nor showed any significant difference among 5-cm straight carapace length (SCL) size classes. Ultimately, these findings provide a basis for comparison with future sex ratios, and highlight the importance of establishing similar long-term studies monitoring secondary, rather than primary, sex ratios, so that needed mitigation measures to climate change impacts can be implemented.

Temporal integration analysis of environmental behavior and fish abundance in selected coastal systems of the southern Gulf of Mexico

Abstract:Tropical coastal environments, notably the southern Gulf of Mexico, are recognized for their rich biodiversity and productive habitats, with key areas being the Terminos Lagoon Flora and Fauna Protected Area (TLFFPA) and the Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve (LPBR). This study, spanning 1985–2011, presents an environmental overview and fish abundance analysis across five zones. Variation has widened, especially in salinity: zone I = 23.4–34.5 to 19.1–36.2; zone II = Palizada-Del Este 0.4–7 to 0.2–2.6, Chumpam-Balchacah 2.6–26.6 to 8.2–34.3, Pom-Atasta, 2.2–19.8 to 0.3–1.6, and Candelaria-Panlau 2.4–18.2 to 1.8–21.9; zone III = 17.4–33.7 to 11.9–25.5; zone IV = 33.5–39.4 to 29.8–41.3. Species richness reached 194, and density (ind/m 2 ) declined in most zones over the years: zone I = 47.8%; zone II = Candelaria-Panlau 74.4%, Chumpam-Balcahcah 22%, Palizada-Del Este 31%, and Pom-Atasta 9.5%; zone III = 61.5%; and zone IV = 32.5%. Coastal ecosystems, dynamic and shaped by diverse forces, face ongoing changes due to human activities, notably in the western region (zones I–III). Temperature and salinity changes lead to reduced density, biomass, and a shift in the composition of dominant species. Evidence supports the notion that introducing invasive species into rivers displaces or diminishes native species. Despite being a Natural Protected Area, the Terminos Lagoon faces intense human activity tied to the fishing and oil industries. In contrast, the LPBR maintains a low impact and a positive conservation status. The study stresses the need for continuous monitoring, especially for TLFFPA, deemed critical for additional information and effective management. Simultaneously, the LPBR should be monitored with adherence to the environmental development plan.

Abstract:Survivorship during the juvenile oceanic phase likely acts as a bottleneck on the growth of sea turtle populations, and starvation mortality through this period is one potential factor influencing year class strength. We combined a simulation of juvenile Kemp's ridley (Lepidochelys kempii) sea turtle dispersal based on an ocean circulation model with an Atlantis ecosystem model to examine the spatial overlap of young sea turtles with their prey resources. We were particularly interested in whether ocean currents facilitated the movement of juveniles from western Gulf nesting beaches to areas in the eastern Gulf along the West Florida Shelf (WFS) with adequate food availability. We found that strong frontal gradients on the WFS may increase the potential for juveniles to remain offshore in areas of high per capita prey availability, allowing for more feeding opportunities during critical early life stages. Additionally, we found that multiple climatological indices are related to Gulf-wide patterns of juvenile dispersal, potentially via effects on the Loop Current. Findings from this study hold implications for continued population viability of protected sea turtle populations in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as other species with early life stages that disperse via ocean currents such as commercially important fishes.

Abstract:Understanding natural movement patterns and ecological roles of marine megafauna is a research priority best studied in areas with minimal human impact. The spatial distribution patterns specifically for immature turtles at foraging grounds have been highlighted as a research gap for effective management and conservation strategies for sea turtle populations. Capture–mark–recapture (CMR) records ( n = 2287) of 1672 immature green ( Chelonia mydas ) ( n = 1158) and hawksbill turtles ( Eretmochelys imbricata ) ( n = 514) from a long-term (1981–2021) in-water CMR program at Aldabra Atoll, Seychelles, were analyzed for 10 sites (0.35–25 km apart). Site fidelity was not correlated with either season or turtle size. Green turtles had lower site fidelity than hawksbill turtles. Green turtles showed avoidance (i.e., opposite of fidelity) of three sites, while hawksbill turtles displayed high fidelity to two sites. Sites displaying non-random behavior (avoidance and/or fidelity) did not share the same benthic habitat types. Results indicate that fidelity can be detected at a fine scale with CMR, but that further exploration into the habitat characteristics of the sites and the ecological roles of both species at the atoll is needed.

Abstract:Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta), being ectothermic organisms, could be especially susceptible to climate change effects. This study investigated the reproductive phenology and outputs of loggerhead turtles and their relationships with climatic variables over a 5‐year period (2019–2023) at Patara Beach, Türkiye. The findings from this study indicate that atmospheric temperature significantly affected incubation period, hatching success rate, the number of dead embryos and the number of empty eggshells. Additionally, relative humidity had a significant impact on the incubation period and the number of empty eggshells. In this context, rising temperatures led to drier nest conditions, decreased incubation periods and increased nest temperatures, resulting in higher proportions of female offspring. More studies are needed at both the Mediterranean and global scales to better understand these effects. Loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta), being ectothermic organisms, could be especially susceptible to climate change effects, and may exhibit climate‐related variation in their reproductive behaviours such as phenology, annual nest numbers, clutch size, hatching success, incubation period and sex ratio. This study investigated the reproductive phenology and outputs of loggerhead turtles and their relationships with climatic variables over a 5‐year period (2019–2023) at Patara Beach, Türkiye. We found significant fluctuations in atmospheric temperature, sea surface temperature and relative humidity, and that female turtle emergences on Patara Beach could temporarily adjust their phenology in response to these minor environmental changes. We highlight the importance of understanding the impacts of phenological shifts on the ability to satisfy the conditions over the nesting season that determine reproductive output. Our statistical analyses also showed that increasing sea water temperatures and atmospheric temperatures, as well as decreasing precipitation and relative humidity, had direct and/or indirect effects on the nesting phenology and reproductive output of loggerhead turtles.
