Abstract:Study objective: There are many videos on contraception on YouTube and TikTok, and women around the world use video platforms extensively to seek health information from videos of uncertain reliability and quality. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the scientific reliability and quality of the most popular social media videos about contraceptive subdermal implants. Methods: TikTok and YouTube videos were assessed separately by two gynecologists. The video quality was evaluated according to the DISCERN score, modified DISCERN score, and Global Quality Scale (GQS) score. Results: The study included the 100 most popular videos, 44 of which were uploaded by health care professionals. The median DISCERN score for videos shared by health care professionals was 50 (range 15-75), whereas it was 22 (range 15-56) for videos shared by independent users (P < .001). The median modified DISCERN score was 4 (min-max 0-5), and the median GQS score was 4 (min-max 1-5) for the videos uploaded by health care professionals. The modified DISCERN and GQS scores of TikTok videos were lower than those of YouTube videos (both P < .001). Conclusion: Social media videos about contraceptive subdermal implants are popular and have been viewed tens of thousands of times, but the overall medical validity, which we evaluated according to the scoring systems, was poor. Despite the large number of videos, the content's quality and reliability are quite limited. There is a need to prioritize the education provided to patients by gynecologists, as well as to create high-quality content for YouTube and other similar platforms.
Short video platforms as sources of health information about cervical cancer: A content and quality analysis

Abstract:The development of short popular science video platforms helps people obtain health information, but no research has evaluated the information characteristics and quality of short videos related to cervical cancer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality and reliability of short cervical cancer-related videos on TikTok and Kwai. The Chinese keyword "cervical cancer" was used to search for related videos on TikTok and Kwai, and a total of 163 videos were ultimately included. The overall quality of these videos was evaluated by the Global Quality Score (GQS) and the modified DISCERN tool. A total of 163 videos were included in this study, TikTok and Kwai contributed 82 and 81 videos, respectively. Overall, these videos received much attention; the median number of likes received was 1360 (403–6867), the median number of comments was 147 (40–601), and the median number of collections was 282 (71–1296). In terms of video content, the etiology of cervical cancer was the most frequently discussed topic. Short videos posted on TikTok received more attention than did those posted on Kwai, and the GQS and DISCERN score of videos posted on TikTok were significantly better than those of videos posted on Kwai. In addition, the videos posted by specialists were of the highest quality, with a GQS and DISCERN score of 3 (2–3) and 2 (2–3), respectively. Correlation analysis showed that GQS was significantly correlated with the modified DISCERN scores (p<0.001). In conclusion, the quality and reliability of cervical cancer-related health information provided by short videos were unsatisfactory, and the quality of the videos posted on TikTok was better than that of videos posted on Kwai. Compared with those posted by individual users, short videos posted by specialists provided higher-quality health information.

Abstract:Introduction and hypothesis: The aim of this study is to examine the quality and content characteristics of educational videos on the use of vaginal cones published on YouTube. Methods: Video searches were conducted on the YouTube website using the keyword "usage of vaginal cones". A total of 52 videos were included in the current study. Modified DISCERN (mDISCERN) and Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) scales were used to evaluate the reliability of the videos, and the Global Quality Scale (GQS) was used for quality and usefulness. Results: As a result of the content analysis conducted, it was observed that 29 videos were classified as having "poor content" and 23 as "rich content." When we examined the sources of the videos (n = 52), it was found that the majority (58%, n = 30) were produced by nonhealth care sources (medical companies and nonhealth professionals). With statistical significance in mDISCERN and GQS (p = 0.014, p = 0.036), physiotherapists were found to have the highest average scores (4.11 ± 1.05, 3.44 ± 0.73) whereas doctors ranked second in the average standard deviation (3.09 ± 1.04, 2.82 ± 0.98). In JAMA, medical companies were found to have the highest average score with statistical significance (p = 0.015) at 3.4 ± 0.74, followed by doctors at 3 ± 1, and physiotherapists at 2.89 ± 0.78 when averages were analyzed. Conclusion: It is clearly evident that there is a need for higher quality and more reliable vaginal cone content database on YouTube. It is important for patients to be guided by health care professionals and informed about quality content criteria in order to access quality, reliable, and useful information.

Abstract:HIV transmission is a major health concern. Global efforts are necessary to control the spread of infection. International collaborative studies in countries with high rates of new infections are essential for increasing knowledge on the behavioral, social, and biomedical aspects of HIV/AIDS and HIV transmission. Statistics indicate a growing HIV epidemic in Russia. There are alarming proportions of new cases attributed to heterosexual contact, and HIV is increasingly affecting people in the general population who are not part of any traditional high-risk group. Despite recent advances in HIV prevention, data on effective behavioral prevention approaches are limited. There is minimal evidence to suggest which types of prevention will be effective in reducing the risk for HIV transmission among people at risk in the general population. This article presents a review and discussion of an international research seminar, HIV Prevention Research: Evidence-Based Behavioral Approaches. Local and international interdisciplinary researchers gathered for the purposes of exchanging research results and information about ongoing studies, identifying gaps in knowledge, and discussing promising prevention strategies. The overarching goal was to advance HIV prevention research through scientific integration. The seminar provided an excellent platform for building research capacity in interdisciplinary HIV research in Russia and integrating research efforts with the international research community to contribute to HIV prevention research throughout the world.

Abstract:Introduction: Popular video-sharing platforms YouTube and TikTok offer a plethora of information on the topic of breast implant illness (BII). As a largely patient-driven phenomenon, it is important to understand the influence of social media on patient knowledge regarding BII. This study sought to evaluate the quality, reliability, visibility, and popularity of YouTube and TikTok videos about BII. Methods: Two validated tools for health information, DISCERN and the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT), were utilized to evaluate the quality of information regarding the topic of BII on YouTube and TikTok. High DISCERN score indicates content of superior quality and reliability, while elevated PEMAT scores signify content that is easily understandable and actionable for viewers. The search phrase “breast implant illness” was used to screen videos, which were sorted based on relevance and view count. The first 100 videos that fulfilled inclusion criteria were independently graded by three reviewers. Results: TikTok videos of longer duration, a higher number of shares, and in the patient education category were all significantly associated with a higher total DISCERN score ( P < 0.05). YouTube videos that included a provider or a patient were significantly more likely to have a higher total DISCERN and PEMAT understandability score (all P < 0.05). Discussion of physician education, operation details, and patient experience was significantly associated with higher total DISCERN and PEMAT understandability scores (all P < 0.05). Conclusions: Total DISCERN and PEMAT scores for videos regarding BII on two popular social media platforms are low. Video length, patient experience categorization, and the presence of a provider are worth considering when developing high-quality online content for breast reconstruction and augmentation patients.

Abstract:Our objective was to assess the quality of acne‐related medical information present on TikTok, the world's fastest growing social media platform. We queried the TikTok mobile application for videos tagged with "#acne" on May 1, 2020, and assessed the top 100 videos meeting inclusion criteria for content quality using DISCERN, a validated and reliable instrument for evaluating consumer health information. The mean content quality rating of videos was 2.03 (SD 0.47) which, according to the DISCERN instrument, indicates information with serious to potentially important shortcomings. Dermatologists should be aware that adolescents are using TikTok to gather acne‐related information, and should prioritize acne education in this patient demographic due to the generally low content quality of such information.

Abstract:Novel enantiopure 1,2,4-trizole-3-thiones containing a benzensulfonamide moiety were synthesized via multistep reaction sequence starting with D-phenylalanine methyl ester and L-phenylalanine ethyl ester as a source of chirality. The chemical structures of all compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, UV, IR, (1) H NMR, (13) C NMR, 2D NMR (HETCOR), and mass spectral data. All compounds were tested in vitro antiviral activity against a broad variety of DNA and RNA viruses and in vitro cytostatic activity against murine leukemia (L1210), human T-lymphocyte (CEM) and human cervix carcinoma (HeLa) cell lines. Although enantiopure 1,2,4-triazole-3-thione analogs in (R) configuration emerged as promising anti-influenza A H1N1 subtype in Madin Darby canine kidney cell cultures (MDCK), their enantiomers exhibited no activity. Especially compounds , , , , and (EC50 : 6.5, 6.1, 2.4, 1.6, 1.7 μM, respectively) had excellent activity against influenza A H1N1 subtype compared to the reference drug ribavirin (EC50 : 8.0 μM). Several compounds have been found to inhibit proliferation of L1210, CEM and HeLa cell cultures with IC50 in the 12-53 μM range. TikTok as an Information Hodgepodge: Evaluation of the Quality and Reliability of Genitourinary Cancers Related Content

Abstract:Background TikTok is the world’s fastest-growing video application, with 1.6 billion users in 2021. More and more patients are searching for information on genitourinary cancers via TikTok. We aim to evaluate the functional quality and reliability of genitourinary cancer-related videos on it and share our thoughts based on the results for better public health promotion. Materials and Methods We retrieved 167 videos on bladder, prostate, and kidney cancer from TikTok. Only 61 videos (36.53%) met the inclusion criteria and were eventually regarded as sample videos. Each video’s length and descriptions, hashtags, number of views/likes/comments, forms of expression, and the uploader’s profile were included. Three validated assessment instruments: the Hexagonal Radar Schema, the Health on the Net Code scale, and the DISCERN instrument, were used for evaluating the quality and reliability of the information. All misinformation was counted and categorized. Univariate analysis of variance was performed for analyzing the results. The Post-Hoc least significant difference test was conducted to explore further explanation. Results Amongst 61 sample videos, healthcare practitioners contributed the most content (n = 29, 47.54%). However, 22 posts (36.07%) were misinformative, and the most common type was using outdated data. More than half of the videos could provide good (> 1 point) content on the diseases’ symptoms and examinations. However, the definition and outcomes were less addressed (tied at 21%). The HONcode scale and the DISCERN instrument revealed a consistent conclusion that most videos (n = 59, 96.72%) on TikTok were of poor to mediocre quality. Videos published by media agencies were statistically better in terms of reliability and overall score ( P = 0.003 and 0.008, respectively). Fifty-three videos (86.89%) had at least two unexplained medical terms. Healthcare professionals tend to use professional terms most (mean = 5.28 words). Conclusions Most videos on genitourinary cancers on TikTok are of poor to medium quality and reliability. However, videos posted by media agencies enjoyed great public attention and interaction. Medical practitioners could improve the video quality by cooperating with media agencies and avoiding unexplained terminologies.

Abstract:Background With the widespread use of TikTok, young girls and adolescents increasingly seek medical information on this platform before presenting for medical evaluation. This study aims to systematically assess the content on TikTok pertaining to endometriosis. Methods Using the term "endometriosis" on 2/22/23, the top 50 TikTok videos were viewed by three independent raters. General characteristics, content categories, and quality of the health information as determined by the DISCERN tool, were compiled. Adequate interrater reliability by weighted kappa supported use of majority rules methodology to norm reviewer results. Results Of 50 videos, 72% were posted by lay people, 12% by doctors, 10% by organizations and 6% by other medical providers. Videos posted by lay people had 1.9-2.9x the views, likes, shares and comments compared to videos posted by doctors. 72% of the videos featured information about symptoms, 50% discussed management, 26% mentioned disease outcomes, 18% discussed diagnosis and 2% reported risk factors. Videos featuring a personal vignette (72%) had 4.8x the total views (60M vs. 12M), 7x the total likes (4.5M vs. 606K), 3.4x the total shares (33M vs. 9.6M), and 6.9x the total comments (44K vs. 9K) compared to videos without. Only 1 video posted by a medical doctor featured a personal story, compared to 34 of 36 videos posted by lay people. With regards to quality of information, content was relevant (3.0/5), and the aims and achievement of aims were considered high (3.73/5 and 3.85/5). However, sources of information were missing, content was biased, and few videos discussed possible gaps in knowledge. Conclusions As our young girls and adolescents increasingly turn to social media for medical information, it is imperative for the PAG community to have a deeper understanding of TikTok's representation of endometriosis as it is a powerful motivator of patient behavior.

Abstract:Health Education Journal, Ahead of Print. Background and Objectives:Short video platforms have become one of the most common methods for disseminating medical information on social media. We analysed gastrointestinal (GI)-related content on TikTok, focusing on the creators' background, patterns of content utilisation and overall content quality and understandability, using validated metrics to quantify the degree of misinformation.Methods:Twelve hashtags related to common GI conditions on TikTok and the 20 most engaging posts associated with each hashtag were selected for review. The 'most engaging' status was determined by the application's internal algorithm. Six GI board-certified physicians evaluated the videos using two validated instruments: DISCERN quality criteria and Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT-A/V) survey.Results:In total, 253 videos were reviewed with 18.6 billion likes, 191,000 comments, 935,000 saves and 927,000 shares. IBS hashtag had the greatest number of views (2.2 billion), while videos on haemorrhoids had the most likes (4.3 million), comments (59,000) and shares (288,000). Most videos 177/253 (70%) were created by non-healthcare workers. The median video quality was 2/5 on DISCERN Likert-type scale with 23/75 DISCERN score. Of 186 videos, 114 (61.3%) were rated 'very poor'; 58/186 (31.2%) 'poor', 13/186 (7%) 'fair' and only one video (0.5%) was rated 'excellent' on DISCERN grading system. The median PEMAT-A/V scores were 7/12 (73.9%) for understandability and 1/3 (33.3%) for actionability.Conclusion:Our study highlights significant public interest in common GI disorders. However, most posts lacked substantive information and did not have verifiable sources.

Abstract:Background Douyin APP is the short video APP with the largest number of users in China. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the quality and reliability of short videos about cosmetic surgery on Douyin. Methods In August 2022, we retrieved and screened 300 short videos related to cosmetic surgery from Douyin, extracted basic video information, encoded the content and identified the video source. The quality and reliability of short video information were evaluated using the DISCERN instrument. Results A total of 168 short videos of cosmetic surgery were included in the survey, and the video sources included personal accounts and institutional accounts. Overall, the total proportion of institutional accounts (47/168, 27.98%) is significantly less than that of personal accounts (121/168, 72.02%); nonhealth professionals received the most praises, comments and even collections and reposts, while for‐profit academic organizations or institutions received the least. The DISCERN scores of 168 short videos of cosmetic surgery were 3.74–4.58 (average 4.22). Content reliability (p = .04) and overall short video quality (p = .02) are significantly different, but short videos published from different sources have no significant difference in treatment selection (p = .052). Conclusion The overall information quality and reliability of short videos about cosmetic surgery on Douyin are satisfactory in China. Abstract:Background: As the most common malignant tumor in the world, breast cancer also brings a huge disease burden to China. Ordinary people are increasingly inclined to use the Internet, especially video social platforms, as a source of health information. Educating the public to obtain correct information is important to reduce the incidence of breast cancer and improve the prognosis. However, the quality and reliability of breast cancer-related video content have not been fully studied. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the quality of the information of breast cancer-related videos on TikTok and Bilibili video sharing platforms and factors related to video quality. Methods: We collected the top 100 videos about breast cancer on TikTok and Bilibili, respectively. Categorize videos according to video source and video content. Video quality and reliability were assessed using Global Quality Score (GQS) and modified DISCERN (mDISCERN) tools. We also analyzed the correlation between video quality and video likes, comments, saves, and shares. Results: Although the quality and reliability of Bilibili's breast cancer videos were higher than TikTok ( p = 0.002 and p = 0.001, respectively), the video quality of both video sharing platforms was not satisfactory, with a median GQS scores of 2.00 and 3.00 and mDISCERN scores of 1.00 and 2.00, respectively. In general, the quality and reliability of videos released by medical practitioners were higher than those of non-medical practitioners, and the quality and reliability of videos covering disease-related knowledge were higher than those of news reports (all p < 0.001). Among medical practitioners, the quality of videos uploaded by doctors in breast disease was significantly lower than that of doctors in other areas ( p < 0.05). There was a significant positive correlation between video quality and duration ( r = 0.240, p < 0.001), a weak negative correlation between video quality and likes ( r = 0.191, p < 0.01), video quality and comments ( r = 0.256, p < 0.001), video reliability and likes ( r = 0.198, p < 0.001), video reliability and comments ( r = 0.243, p < 0.01). Conclusion: Our study shows that the quality and reliability of breast cancer-related videos on TikTok and Bilibili are poor, and the overall quality is unsatisfactory. But videos uploaded by medical practitioners covering disease knowledge, prevention and treatment are of higher quality. Medical practitioners are encouraged to publish more high-quality videos, while video social platforms should formulate relevant policies to censor and supervise health education videos, so as to enable the public to obtain reliable health information.

Abstract:Importance Social media platforms are increasingly utilized to distribute medical information. Our study emphasizes the need for accuracy in pelvic health education on social media and the involvement of female pelvic floor (FPF) specialists in content creation. Aims In this cross‐sectional study, we assessed the FPF TikTok videos with the highest engagement for quality of information and misinformation and investigated the relationship between misinformation and user engagement. Methods We collected all TikTok videos on the US app with hashtags related to FPF conditions, including 76 on pelvic organ prolapse, 323 on urinary tract infection, 84 on overactive bladder, and 972 on incontinence. The top 20 videos for each FPF condition were selected based on highest engagement, and 74 videos total met inclusion criteria. TikTok videos were scored with the validated DISCERN instrument for quality of consumer health information and a 5‐point Likert scale for misinformation. Abstract:Purpose To critically appraise the quality and reliability of YouTube videos regarding peri‐implant diseases and conditions as a source of information for patients, students, and young clinicians. Materials and Methods In March 2023, electronic searches were performed on YouTube website to identify videos related to peri‐implant diseases and conditions. We considered only the relevant 250 English‐language videos with durations between 3 and 30 min for final analyses. Following the eligibility criteria videos were evaluated for their demographic data, including number of views; number of likes, dislikes, and comments; days since upload; duration; and number of subscribers. Moreover, two assessors independently evaluated the quality and reliability of the included videos using the DISCERN and Video Information and Quality Index (VIQI) tools. Abstract:Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic condition characterized by painful, inflamed lumps under the skin in intertriginous areas. While social media platforms like TikTok are increasingly raising public awareness about HS, the quality of the information presented remains challenging to assess. Our study aims to analyze the top one hundred TikTok videos focusing on HS clinical information, treatment options, and patient experiences from 2020 to 2024. We evaluate user engagement data, content characteristics, and assess the quality of health information using a validated DISCERN score. Overall, our study suggests that while TikTok serves as a valuable resource for raising awareness and accessing new information about HS, content from healthcare professionals and scientific research garners higher user engagement and contributes to greater awareness of HS.

Abstract:Summary Background TikTok is one of the fastest growing social media platforms. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) has recently become a trending topic of interest among TikTok users. Aim To better understand the quality and accuracy of information presented in the most popular IBS‐relevant videos on TikTok. Methods We reviewed videos with the tag 'IBS'. We excluded those not relevant to IBS or lasting 10 min. Baseline characteristics about the videos were collected. Abstract:Background/Objectives: Individuals are turning increasingly towards online resources, such as TikTok, to educate themselves on their medical conditions. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prominent example, as women report dissatisfaction with the diagnosis process and treatment options. This study aims to provide a content analysis of the quality of PCOS health information on TikTok. Methods: A total of 325 TikTok videos were screened. Pertinent data, including likes, comments, shares, and views, along with video content concerning symptoms, interventions, and provider interactions were analyzed. Two reviewers independently used a modified DISCERN criteria to assess the quality of information for each video. A logistic regression was also utilized to model the probability of healthcare professionals creating educational videos. Results: A total of 238 videos met the eligibility criteria for analysis. Videos had a median of 468,400 views (Q1 = 146,400, Q3 = 1,100,000) and 18,000 likes (Q1 = 5631, Q3 = 65,100). The mean modified DISCERN scores were 3.6 ± 0.9 for physicians (n = 23), 2.0 ± 1.1 for non-physician healthcare providers (n = 52), and 1.0 ± 0.2 for non-healthcare professionals (n = 141) (p < 0.001). Healthcare professionals were 10.9 times more likely to create educational videos in comparison to non-healthcare professionals (p < 0.001). Conclusions: TikTok videos related to PCOS attract considerable engagement but provide low-quality information. Most videos were made by non-healthcare professionals, who discussed treatment options with limited or no research. Healthcare providers should be aware of the impacts on patients' preconceived notions and help to improve patient education.
