Abstract:Microalgae biomass has attracted attention as a feedstock to produce biofuels, biofertilizers, and pigments. However, the high production cost associated with cultivation and separation stages is a challenge for the microalgae biotechnology application on a large scale. A promising approach to overcome the technical-economic limitations of microalgae production is using wastewater as a nutrient and water source for cultivation. This strategy reduces cultivation costs and contributes to valorizing sanitation resources. Therefore, this article presents a comprehensive literature review on the status of microalgae biomass cultivation in wastewater, focusing on production strategies and the accumulation of valuable compounds such as lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, fatty acids, and pigments. This review also covers emerging techniques for harvesting microalgae biomass cultivated in wastewater, discussing the advantages and limitations of the process, as well as pointing out the main research opportunities. The novelty of the study lies in providing a detailed analysis of state-of-the-art and potential advances in the cultivation and harvesting of microalgae, with a special focus on the use of wastewater and implementing innovative strategies to enhance productivity and the accumulation of compounds. In this context, the work aims to guide future research concerning emerging technologies in the field, emphasizing the importance of innovative approaches in cultivating and harvesting microalgae for advancing knowledge and practical applications in this area.

Abstract:Microalgae cultivation in wastewater has received much attention as an environmentally sustainable approach. However, commercial application of this technique is challenging due to the low biomass output and high harvesting costs. Recently, integrated culture and harvest systems including microalgae biofilm, membrane photobioreactor, microalgae-fungi co-culture, microalgae-activated sludge co-culture, and microalgae auto-flocculation have been explored for efficiently coupling microalgal biomass production with wastewater purification. In such systems, the cultivation of microalgae and the separation of algal cells from wastewater are performed in the same reactor, enabling microalgae grown in the cultivation system to reach higher concentration, thus greatly improving the efficiency of biomass production and wastewater purification. Additionally, the design of such innovative systems also allows for microalgae cells to be harvested more efficiently. This review summarizes the mechanisms, characteristics, applications, and development trends of the various integrated systems and discusses their potential for broad applications, which worth further research.

Abstract:Microalgae biomass has been considered as a potential feedstock for the production of renewable chemicals and biofuels. Microalgae culture combined with wastewater treatment is a promising approach to improve the sustainability of the business model. However, algae culture and harvest account for the majority of the high costs, hindering the development of the microalgae-based wastewater utilization. Cost-effective culture systems and harvesting methods for enhancing biomass yield and reducing the cost of resource recovery have become extremely urgent and important. In this review, different commonly used culture systems for microalgae are discussed; the current harvesting methods with different culture systems have also been evaluated. Also, the inherent characteristics of inefficiency in algae wastewater treatment are elaborated. Current literature collectively supports that a biofilm type device is a system designed for higher biomass productivity, and offers ease of harvesting, in small-scale algae cultivation. Additionally, bio-flocculation, which uses one kind of flocculated microalgae to concentrate on another kind of non-flocculated microalgae is a low-cost and energy-saving alternative harvesting method. These findings provide insight into a comprehensive understanding of integrated culture systems and harvesting methods for microalgae-based wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Purpose of ReviewWith economic development and population increase, environmental pollution and water shortages have become inevitable global problems. Microalgae-based wastewater treatment technology can not only purify wastewater and solve environmental pollution problems but also use the nutrient elements in wastewater to produce algal biomass, which has attracted more and more attention. This work reviews the current status of microalgae bioremediation of wastewater, aiming to provide a reference for further research in this field.Recent FindingsMicroalgae have been proven to be used to treat municipal wastewater, agricultural wastewater, and industrial wastewater and can convert nutrients into biomass. In order to further improve the wastewater treatment efficacy and algal biomass productivity, it is necessary to understand the mechanism of microalgae to remove nutrients and pollutants from wastewater. Currently, open ponds and enclosed photobioreactors are used for large-scale cultivation of microalgae, and various harvesting technologies are developed to achieve low-cost capture of microalgae as much as possible. Microalgae are rich in pigments, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins, and antioxidants and can produce a variety of value-added products, making this biotechnology more cost-effective.SummaryThis review discusses the purification efficiencies of microalgae on wastewater from different sources and introduces the mechanism and influencing factors by which microalgae remove carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals, and antibiotics in details. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of different microalgae cultivation systems are analyzed. Abstract:Microalgae are recognized as cell factories enriched with biochemicals suitable as feedstock for bio-energy, food, feed, pharmaceuticals, and nutraceuticals applications. The industrial application of microalgae is challenging due to hurdles associated with mass cultivation and biomass recovery. The scale-up production of microalgal biomass in freshwater is not a sustainable solution due to the projected increase of freshwater demands in the coming years. Microalgae cultivation in wastewater is encouraged in recent years for sustainable bioeconomy from biorefinery processes. Wastewater from the food industry is a less-toxic growth medium for microalgal biomass production. Traditional wastewater treatment and management processes are expensive; hence it is highly relevant to use low-cost wastewater treatment processes with revenue generation through different products. Microalgae are accepted as potential biocatalysts for the bioremediation of wastewater. Microalgae based purification of wastewater technology could be a universal alternative solution for the recovery of resources from wastewater for low-cost biomass feedstock for industry. This review highlights the importance of microalgal biomass production in food processing wastewater, their characteristics, and different microalgal cultivation methods, followed by nutrient absorption mechanisms. Towards the end of the review, different microalgae biomass harvesting processes with biorefinery products, and void gaps that tend to hinder the biomass production with future perspectives will be intended. Thus, the review could claim to be valuable for sustainable microalgae biomass production for eco-friendly bioproduct conversions.

Abstract:The development of anthropogenic activities has led to an excessive disposal of wastes into water bodies, thus reducing water quality and damaging aquatic ecosystems. To avoid the negative impacts associated to the discharge of wastes into water courses, effective remediation processes are required to reduce nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in discharged effluents. Current methodologies applied for nutrients removal tend to be complex, expensive and energy demanding. Therefore, cultivation of microalgae has appeared as an emerging alternative for nutrients removal from wastewaters. These photosynthetic microorganisms require large amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus for their growth. However, since it is very difficult to maintain pure cultures of these microorganisms in wastewater treatment processes, several studies have reported the use of natural and artificial microalgal consortia composed exclusively by microalgae or by microalgae and bacteria. The use of these consortia in the remediation of wastewaters can be very advantageous because: (i) cooperative interactions between the co-cultivated microorganisms can occur, enhancing the overall uptake of nutrients; and (ii) these systems tend to be more resistant to environmental conditions oscillations. This study provides an updated review of the literature regarding the application of microalgal consortia in the remediation of wastewaters from different sources, focusing on the mechanisms involved in nutrients removal by microalgae and the main interactions established between the microorganisms integrating the consortia and how they can influence nutrients removal efficiencies.

Abstract:Microalgae are emerging as a promising source for augmenting the supply of essential products to meet global demands in an environmentally sustainable manner. Despite the potential benefits of microalgae in industry, the high energy consumption for harvesting remains a significant obstacle. This review offers a comprehensive overview of microalgae harvesting technologies and their industrial applications, with particular emphasis on the latest advances in flocculation techniques. These cutting-edge methods have been applied to biodiesel production, food and nutraceutical processing, and wastewater treatment. Large-scale harvesting is still severely impeded by the high cost despite progress has been made in laboratory studies. In the future, cost-effective microalgal harvesting will rely on efficient resource utilization, including the use of waste materials and the reuse of media and flocculants. Additionally, precise regulation of biological metabolism will be necessary to overcome algal species-related limitations through the development of extracellular polymeric substance-induced flocculation technology.

Abstract:Natural resources are becoming increasingly scarce, and the need to control their consumption and recycle their use is growing. Water is one of the essential resources for human survival. Therefore, there has been an increasing interest in ways to save, recycle and treat water supplies. Aquaculture is one of the most polluting activities as it produces a significant wastewater volume, which needs proper treatment before being discharged into the environment or recycled. Microalgae are a potential solution for wastewater treatment. Due to their numerous advantages, the use of microalgal biomass is being studied, and, at present, there is already a market and room for profit in the sale of microalgal components in various forms, such as animal and human supplements. From a biorefinery point of view, it is important to take advantage of all the qualities and benefits that microalgae have by combining their great capacity to treat wastewater and exploit the produced biomass, analysing its composition for subsequent valorisation, for example. In this study, Chlorella vulgaris was used to treat aquaculture wastewater from a trout farm aquaculture facility, and the treatment efficiency was evaluated. To valorise the resulting biomass, its composition was also assessed. C. vulgaris successfully grew in the effluent with growth rates of 0.260 ± 0.014 d−1 and with average productivity of 32.9 ± 1.6 mg L−1 d−1. The achieved removal efficiencies were 93.5 ± 2.1% for total nitrogen, 98.0 ± 0.1% for nitrate-nitrogen and 92.7 ± 0.1% for phosphate-phosphorus. Concerning biomass composition, the lipids (15.82 ± 0.15%), carbohydrates (48.64 ± 0.83%), and pigment contents (0.99 ± 0.04% for chlorophyll a + b and 0.21 ± 0.04% for carotenoids) were similar to the values of similar studies. However, the protein content obtained (17.93 ± 1.21%) was lower than the ones mentioned in the literature.

Abstract:Developing efficient, sustainable microalgae harvesting methods is vital to enable microalgae as renewable feedstock for food and functional nutrients. Conventional techniques face barriers in efficiency, cost, scalability, and compatibility with food processing. While extensive reviews exist on individual harvesting mechanisms, this critical review uniquely focuses on emerging, gentler technologies compatible with food-grade microalgae production, including bioflocculation, electrolytic coagulation, ultrasonic aggregation, magnetic separation and phototaxis. Novel hybrid approaches combining these mechanisms are also discussed. Focus is placed on potential advantages in separation performance, energy input, scalability and compatibility with food-grade production. Considerations for continued development like materials optimization , large-scale operation, process monitoring, and technoeconomic analysis are outlined. Bioflocculation using microbes or algal biopolymers can achieve high, selective recovery without chemicals. Electroflocculation electrolytically generates coagulants, enabling rapid, controlled destabilization and aggregation. Ultrasound/hydrodynamic cavitation disrupts cells to release coagulating organics. Magnetic nanoparticles give excellent, scalable separation under low magnetic field gradients. Phototaxis exploits directional swimming of motile species towards light. Hybrid systems integrate advantages of individual mechanisms. Continuous separation systems like electrolytic coagulation combined with flotation minimize processing steps but require holistic optimization. By avoiding toxic chemicals and reducing energy input, advanced bio-based and low-energy harvesting technologies can enhance the sustainability of microalgae production for food ingredients. This review emphasizes green technologies and their integration potential, stimulating innovation towards eco-friendly microalgae harvesting, while aligning process development with sustainable design principles.

Abstract:Rapidly growing industrialization and depletion of non-renewable fossil fuel has led to finding alternative viable renewable resources to meet the growing energy demand with less carbon dioxide generation. The modern world energy strategy is based on cost-effective and green alternatives and microalgae cultivation have potential to meet these criteria. Microalgae has been identified as a promising and sustainable alternative for treating wastewaters along the production of valuable products. Microalgae with a short life span, high growth rate and high CO2 utilization efficiency is one of viable techniques of renewable resources to produce biomass using nutrients in wastewater. At current, the technology and cost are the main factors that limit the application at industrial scale, which needs an ideal downstream process to minimize the production cost. The simultaneous use of microalgae for wastewater treatment and biofuel production has made these challenges practicable and economically viable. Microalgae efficiency for ammonia, phosphorus and heavy metal removal along with biofuel and bio-fertilizer production is reviewed. It is also aimed to focus on recent advances in cultivation of microalgae in wastewater, the response of microalgae to different stresses and their effects on the quality and quantity of high-value products was investigated. The prospects for future research dealing with wastewater treatment and biofuel production on downstream processing is also suggested.

Abstract:Purpose of ReviewMicroalgae-mediated resource recovery and recycling of wastewater might be useful in producing biomass, biofertilizers, and environmentally acceptable bioproducts. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities of wastewater valorization to valuable algal biomass by opting a self-sustainable carbon-neutral approach.Recent FindingsVarious challenges and opportunities of using unsterilized urban wastewater are explored to provide insights into addressing the processing issues. Major wastewater challenges include turbidity with blackish appearance, emerging contaminants, pathogenic microbial community, and higher nutrient load. A brief comparison of sterilization techniques has been made, mainly focusing on principles, advantages, and limitations. Despite the challenges, it is found that microalgae-based resource recovery could be a viable and promising opportunity in a wastewater-driven integrated biorefinery paradigm.SummaryDespite the availability of various wastewater treatment methods, microalgae-based wastewater treatment is promising, and carbon neutral approach which transforms the nutrients to valuable biomass, thereby reducing the nutrient load of the water. However, microalgal cultivation in wastewater encounters physical and biological challenges. Abstract:<p>Microalgae are promising biological factories for diverse natural products. Microalgae tout high productivity, and their biomass has value in industrial products ranging from biofuels, feedstocks, food additives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and as alternatives to synthetic or animal‐derived products. However, harvesting microalgae to extract bioproducts is challenging given their small size and suspension in liquid growth media. In response, technologic developments have relied upon mechanical, chemical, thermal, and biological means to dewater microalgal suspensions and further extract bioproducts. In this review, the effectiveness and considerations were evaluated for the implementation of microalgae harvesting techniques. Nonbiological methods—filtration, chemical, electrical, and magnetic nanoparticle flocculation, centrifugation, hydrothermal liquefaction, and solvent‐based extraction, as well as biological coculture‐based methods are included. Recent advances in coculture algae‐flocculation technologies that involve bacteria and fungi are summarized. These produce a variety of natural bioproducts, which show promise in fuel and food additive applications. Furthermore, this review addresses the developments of genetic tools and resources to optimize the productivity and harvesting of microalgae or to provide new bioproducts via heterologous expression. Finally, a glimpse of future biotechnologies that will converge to produce, harvest, and process microalgae using sustainable and cost‐effective methods is offered.</p>

Abstract:Municipal wastewater (MWW) provides a promising platform for microalgae cultivation due to its rich content of essential nutrients. Recent research has showcased the multifaceted benefits of microalgae-based wastewater treatment, from the potent depollution capabilities of these organisms to their biomass potential for ecofriendly applications. A significant advantage lies in the ability of these systems to promote environmental sustainability without producing secondary pollutants, aligning with the circular economy model. This approach encompasses various stages, from cultivating microalgae to biomass separation and subsequent valorization. However, challenges arise when scaling these systems to industrial levels. A predominant barrier is the difficulty in maintaining consistent control over all the factors influencing wastewater phytoremediation. This can compromise both biomass survival and the efficiency of pollution removal and valorization. Notably, using native microalgal consortiums from the effluent appears to be a promising strategy. These autochthonous communities often demonstrate superior adaptability and treatment capacity, emphasizing the importance of further exploring their potential to provide effective and economically viable solutions for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Using wastewater as resource for microalgal cultivation was seriously considered as a promising approach for sustainable biomass and lipid production. The proper selection of microalgal species is the foundation and key point to achieve this objective. This paper reviewed the recent status of microalgal cultivation in wastewater, including the characteristics of microalgal species used in recent studies, the performance of different microalgal species in different types of wastewater, the commonly-used isolation methods of microalgal species adaptable to the growth in wastewater, and the evaluation criteria of microalgal species. It was found that microalgal biomass and lipid production in wastewater were comparable to those in artificial culture medium, although most of the data was obtained in sterilized wastewater. Among all microalgal species involved in this review, Botryococcus braunii, Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii showed superior performance in certain studies. However, no microalgal species has been demonstrated to meet all the requirements for large-scale biomass production in wastewater. Thus, the efforts on microalgal species isolation and characterization should still be promoted. On the basis of all the information, this review explored the limitations of recent studies and future research needs on this topic.

Abstract:<p>The treatment of wastewater by microalgae has been studied and proved to be effective through previous studies. Due to the small size of microalgae, how to efficiently harvest microalgae from wastewater is a crucial factor restricting the development of algal technologies. Fungi-assisted microalgae bio-flocculation for microalgae harvesting and wastewater treatment simultaneously, which was overlooked previously, has attracted increasing attention in the recent decade due to its low cost and high efficiency. This review found that fungal hyphae and microalgae can stick together due to electrostatic neutralization, surface protein interaction, and exopolysaccharide adhesion in the co-culture process, realizing co-pelletization of microalgae and fungi, which is conducive to microalgae harvesting. Besides, the combination of fungi and microalgae has a complementary effect on pollutant removal from wastewaters. The co-culture of fungi-microalgae has excellent development prospects with both environmental and economic benefits, and it is expected to be applied on an industrial scale.</p>

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate whether serological techniques, ELISA and Western blot, are useful in monitoring treatment of H. pylori-associated chronic dyspeptic symptoms in children. We observed a correlation between a decrease in the anti-H. pylori IgG titer and an effective treatment. So, our results suggested that the ELISA assay conducted with a glycine H. pylori extract can be a good noninvasive assay for monitoring the effectiveness of the therapy. By using the Western blot method, we showed some variation in the specificity of anti-H. pylori IgG produced before and after treatment. However, this variation was not correlated with the effectiveness of the therapy.

Abstract:Aquaculture operations produce large amounts of wastewater contaminated with organic matter, nitrogenous compounds, and other emerging contaminants; when discharged into natural water bodies, it could result in ecological problems and severely threaten aquatic habitats and human health. However, using aquaculture wastewater in biorefinery systems is becoming increasingly crucial as advancements in valuable bioproduct production continue to improve economic feasibility. Research on utilising microalgae as an alternative to producing biomass and removing nutrients from aquaculture wastewater has been extensively studied over the past decades. Microalgae have the potential to use carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) effectively and significantly reduce carbon footprint, and the harvested biomass can also be used as aquafeed. Furthermore, aquaculture wastewater enriched with phosphorus (P) is a potential resource for P recovery for the production of biofertiliser. This will reduce the P supply shortage and eliminate the environmental consequences of eutrophication. In this context, the present review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art in a generation, as well as the characteristics and environmental impact of aquaculture wastewater reported by the most recent research. Furthermore, the review synthesized recent developments in algal biomass cultivation using aquaculture wastewater and its utilisation as biorefinery feedstocks for producing value-added products, such as aquafeeds, bioethanol, biodiesel, biomethane, and bioenergy. This integrated process provides a sustainable method for recovering biomass and water, fully supporting the framework of a circular economy in aquaculture wastewater treatment via resource recovery.

Abstract:Microalgae have emerged as potential candidates for biomass production and pollutant removal. However, expensive biomass harvesting, insufficient biomass productivity, and low energy intensity limit the large-scale production of microalgae. To break through these bottlenecks, a novel technology of immobilized microalgae culture coupled with wastewater treatment has received increasing attention in recent years. In this review, the characteristics of two immobilized microalgae culture technologies are first presented and then their mechanisms are discussed in terms of biofilm formation theories, including thermodynamic theory, Derjaguin-Landau-Verwei-Overbeek theory (DLVO) and its extended theory (xDLVO), as well as ionic cross-linking mechanisms in the process of microalgae encapsulated in alginate. The main factors (algal strains, carriers, and culture conditions) affecting the growth of microalgae are also discussed. It is also summarized that immobilized microalgae show considerable potential for nitrogen and phosphorus removal, heavy metal removal, pesticide and antibiotic removal in wastewater treatment. The role of bacteria in the cultivation of microalgae by immobilization techniques and their application in wastewater treatment are clarified. This is economically feasible and technically superior. The problems and challenges faced by immobilized microalgae are finally presented.

Abstract:Industrial sustainability is a process that has been gaining space in recent years. The use of microalgae for wastewater treatment could solve some environmental challenges, optimize resources, and generate value-added products in agriculture, biofuel, food, and feed. The use of High Rate Algal Pond (HRAP) presents economic benefits, by treating contaminated effluents and taking advantage of the microalgae biomass generated. The microalgae growth in wastewater can be limited by lighting energy or the easily assimilable carbon source, due to the high load of nutrients and organic matter present in these effluents. In the same way, other physical, chemical, and biological parameters must be controlled to guarantee that the process reaches its maximum performance. The technology applied with microalgae for the waste industrial treatment seeks to generate sustainable, economical, and efficient processes that guarantee the discharge of water under standard parameters that allow for preserving the environment, the quality of life of citizens and generating inputs such as biofertilizers that allow avoiding crucial problems such as NPK ratio imbalance, soil hardening, salinization, nutrient depletion, groundwater contamination and food for animal consumption that allows generating nutritional alternatives. In this way, the treatment of wastewater with microalgae is an opportunity to solve sanitary and environmental problems under a sustainable approach to obtain inputs, although some challenges must be solved for scale production. This document intends to show outstanding aspects related to effluent treatment, water reuse, and sustainable production of agricultural inputs through the use of microalgae.
