Abstract:Abstract Background Patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are not systematically screened against depression as well as anxiety, although there are high prevalence and adverse influence on the quality of life. The aim of this work was to determine generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder prevalence in patients with IBD, and the secondary objective was to identify patient properties linked to higher psychiatric disorder rates. Results We determined anxiety and depression prevalence in 105 IBD patients (82 having ulcerative colitis and 23 suffering from Crohn’s disease) through a psychiatric interview using the Arabic version of Structured Clinical Interview for DSM IV Axis I diagnosis (SCID I), in addition to severity assessment of major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder using the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D) and the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A), respectively. Patient data, disease characteristics, and drug information were also gathered. We found a high depression prevalence of 56.2% ( n = 59), followed by 37.1% ( n = 39), with no significant association between IBD severity and anxiety and depression severity. Conclusion Depression and/or anxiety affected a large number of IBD patients. Such psychiatric disorders’ frequency would warrant detection as well as referral to psychiatric treatment.
MicroRNA-155 in exosomes secreted from helicobacter pylori infection macrophages immunomodulates inflammatory response.

Abstract:Exosomes containing microRNA-155 act as molecule carriers during immune cell-cell communication and play an important role in the inflammatory response of H. pylori infection macrophages. Previous reports have found that miR-155 was over-expressed in H. pylori infection macrophages, but the significance of which is still unknown. In this study, we analyzed the impact of miR-155 loaded in exosomes derived from macrophages to the inflammatory response of H. pylori infection macrophages and possible mechanisms. We found that miR-155 promoted the expression of inflammatory cytokines including TNF-a, IL-6, IL-23, but also increased the expression of CD40, CD63, CD81, and MCH-I. Meanwhile, inflammatory signal pathways proteins, such as MyD88, NF-κB in H. pylori infection macrophages were down-regulated due to the over-expression of miR-155. Experiments in vitro or in vivo revealed that miR-155 promoted macrophages to inhibit or kill H. pylori by regulating the inflammatory response of cells to prevent the gastritis caused by H. pylori infection. These findings contribute to the understanding of miR-155 contained in exosomes in inflammatory responses of H. pylori infection macrophages.

Abstract:Abstract Background Patients with Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are susceptible to psychiatric co-morbidities. We aimed to ascertain the burden of anxiety, depression, and perceived stress in patients with IBD from north India. Methods Consenting adult patients with an established diagnosis of IBD were enrolled. The enrolled patients filled the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) questionnaires. The patient and disease characteristics were analyzed to determine the correlations and predictors of psychiatric comorbidities. Spearman’s rho (ρ) was used for assessment of correlation between disease attributes and psychological disorders. Results A total of 318 patients (255 UC, 63 CD; mean age 40.13±12.06 years, 168 [52.8%] males; mean partial Mayo score 2.10±2.35; and mean HBI 2.77±2.13) were enrolled. The prevalence of anxiety, depression and moderate to high perceived stress was 14.15%, 12.57%, and 41% respectively. Females had higher mean perceived stress, anxiety and depression scores compared to males. The partial Mayo score (PMS) correlated poorly with anxiety (ρ=0.083, p=0.187), depression (ρ=0.123, p=0.49) and perceived stress (ρ=0.169; p=0.007). The Harvey Bradshaw index (HBI) correlated fairly with anxiety (ρ=0.336, p=0.007) and poorly with depression (ρ= 0.287, p=0.022) and perceived stress (ρ=0.20; p=0.117). Younger age (OR 0.93, 95% CI 0.90-0.97; p=0.001) and hand grip strength (OR 4.63, 95% CI 1.88-11.42; p=0.001) predicted anxiety in patients with UC while rural area of residence (OR 4.75, 95% CI 1.03-21.98; p=0.046) and HBI (OR 1.60, 95% CI 1.12-2.29; p=0.009) were significant predictors of anxiety in patients with CD. Conclusion Psychiatric comorbidities are common in patients with IBD, with higher prevalence in females. Young adults with UC and sarcopenia; and individuals with active CD living in rural areas are at an increased risk of anxiety.

Abstract:Introduction Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent functional gastrointestinal disorder frequently associated with psychological conditions such as stress, anxiety, and depression. Given the high-stress work environments of nurses and the lack of studies on this topic in the Al-Qassim region, this cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the prevalence of IBS and its association with anxiety and depression among nurses in this area of Saudi Arabia. The research hypothesis was that nurses with IBS would report higher levels of anxiety and depression compared to those without IBS. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among 96 nurses working at King Fahd Specialty Hospital (KFSH) in the Al-Qassim region. Nurses were selected using systematic sampling, with a total sample size initially calculated to be 189, but only 96 participated. Data were collected using a validated self-administered questionnaire, which included sociodemographic information and psychological assessments based on the Rome III criteria for IBS diagnosis and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21) to measure psychological distress. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results In a sample of 96 nurses, the prevalence of IBS was found to be 19.8%, indicating a notable presence within this population. The majority of participants were female. No significant associations were observed between IBS and demographic or lifestyle factors. However, a higher prevalence of IBS was noted among nurses with more than 10 years of experience (27.3%, n=21) compared to those with less experience (10.5%, n=two), although this difference did not reach statistical significance (p=0.126). This study also revealed a high prevalence of stress, anxiety, and depression in the nurse population. Moreover, nurses diagnosed with IBS reported significantly higher levels of stress, depression, and anxiety compared to their counterparts without IBS (all p-values < 0.05). Conclusion There was a high prevalence of IBS among nurses, particularly those with higher levels of psychological distress. This study highlights the importance of developing targeted mental health interventions for nurses. However, the small sample size and cross-sectional design limit the generalizability and causality of the findings. Future studies should include larger, more diverse samples, and longitudinal designs to further explore these associations.

Abstract:Abstract Background Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), can trigger the onset of depressive and anxiety symptoms. The evaluation of mental well-being in patients with a chronic medical condition is considered a good clinical practice and it is strongly recommended by the World Health Organization. Nevertheless, mental health is not routinely investigated in this context for several reasons, including lack of training by healthcare professionals, stigma associated to mental health and gender-relatedstereotypes. The objectives of our study were to assess the presence of depressive and anxiety symptoms inpatients affected by IBD using two simple validated questionnaires and to identify potential related factors, particularly gender differences. Methods We conducted a single center observational study evaluating anxiety and depressive symptoms in patients with IBD treated with biological therapy at the IBD Unit of Ospedale Policlinico of Milan during October 2022. We assessed depressive and anxiety symptoms using respectively the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) that are easy self-administered rating scales. Univariate analyses and regression models were applied for the purpose of the study. Results Among a total of 174 consecutive patients, 158 completed the questionnaires. The prevalence of moderate tosevere depression (PHQ-9 score > 9) in the total sample was 18.4%, and it was higher in CD than in UC (21% vs 9.7%). The prevalence of clinically significant anxiety symptoms (GAD-7 score > 9) was 24% (25.7% in CD and 19.3% in UC). Focusing on gender differences, similar prevalence of significant anxiety anddepression was observed between males (M) and females (F); respectively 18.6% M vs 17.6% F for depression (PHQ-9 > 9) and 22.2% M vs 25.4% F for anxiety (GAD-7 > 9). Of note, a relevant association was observed between younger age and higher GAD-7 (β =-0.639; p=0.021) and PHQ-9 (β =-0.604, p=0.055) scores. Conclusion Both males and females (especially younger) IBD patients in biological therapy are largely affected bysignificant depressive and anxiety symptoms. The administration of simple questionnaires like PHQ-9 andGAD-7 in routine clinical practice can facilitate early identification of patients requiring mental health support, this is crucial as psychiatric conditions can complicate the course of the disease and adherence to treatments.

Abstract:Abstract Psychiatric disorders are 1.5 to 2 times more prevalent in persons with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) than in the general population, with pooled prevalence estimates of 21% for clinical anxiety and 15% for depression. Rates are even higher when considering mental health symptoms, as nearly one-third of persons with IBD experience elevated anxiety symptoms and one-quarter experience depression symptoms. Rates of these symptoms were much higher during periods of disease activity, more common in women than men, and more common in Crohn’s disease than ulcerative colitis. There is robust evidence of the detrimental effects of comorbid depression and anxiety on the subsequent course of IBD based on longitudinal studies tracking outcomes over time. However, psychiatric disorders and IBD have bidirectional effects, with each affecting risk of the other. Elevated mental health concerns have been consistently associated with greater healthcare utilization and costs related to IBD. There is some signal that low resilience in adolescence could be a risk factor for developing IBD and that enhancing resilience may improve mental health and intestinal disease outcomes in IBD. Psychological therapies used to treat anxiety and depression occurring in the context of IBD have been shown to significantly improve the quality of life for persons with IBD and reduce anxiety and depression. There is less evidence in regard to the impact of psychotropic medications on mental health or disease outcomes in persons with IBD. There is consensus, however, that mental health must be addressed as part of comprehensive IBD care for children and adults.

Abstract:Abstract Background There are few studies assessing anxiety and depression in newly diagnosed patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression in patients newly diagnosed with Crohn`s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), and to compare anxiety and depression with the Norwegian general population. Methods Patients (≥18 years) were included from the Inflammatory Bowel Disease in South-Eastern Norway (IBSEN III) study, a large prospective observational inception cohort. Prevalences of anxiety and depression were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), where a dimensional sub-score of ≥8 was indicative of possible cases of anxiety (HADS-A) and depression (HADS-D). Data on the general population is retrieved from the Trøndelag Health Study (the HUNT Study), a large, population-based cohort study in Norway (N= 56041). Robust regression analyses were performed to compare HADS scores in the patients with IBD to individuals from the general population, adjusted for age and education. Prevalences of both depression and anxiety are estimated using the dichotomised HADS scores. Results Of the 1509 patients with a verified IBD diagnosis, 938 patients aged ≥ 18 years (62.1%) completed the HADS questionnaire (CD, 297 (31.7%), UC, 641 (68.3%). In the general population there were n= 41242 respondents of the HADS. The prevalence of anxiety in CD was 37.4% (95% CI [0.32; 0.43]) compared with 32.1% in UC (95% CI [0.28; 0.35]) and prevalence of depression was 21.9% in CD (95% CI [0.17; 0.27]), compared with 16.8% in UC (95% CI [0.14; 0.20]). In the general population, the prevalence of anxiety was 17.9 % (95% CI [0.18; 0.18]), and the prevalence of depression was 9.6% (95% CI [0.09; 0.10]), both significantly lower compared with the patients with CD and UC. Compared with the general population, male patients with CD scored significantly higher, 2.9 points higher (95% CI [2.5;3.4]) on HADS-A and 1.3 points higher (95% CI [ 0.9; 1.8]) on HADS-D. Male patients with UC scored significantly higher on HADS-A (B = 2.5, 95% CI [2.1; 2.8]) and HADS-D (B= 0.7, 95% CI [0.4; 1.0]). Female patients with CD scored significantly higher on HADS-D, B= 0.8 (95% CI [0.3;1.3]). No statistically difference between females with UC and females in the general population was found. Conclusion Anxiety and depression are prevalent in patients newly diagnosed with IBD, and significantly more prevalent in patients compared with the general population. Male patients especially, had significantly higher HADS scores compared with the general population. The results indicate considerable psychological impact of IBD in newly diagnosed patients.

Abstract:Abstract Studies have demonstrated that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients are at an increased risk of developing anxiety and/or depression. IBD patients with depression/anxiety have higher rates of hospitalization and increased disease severity than those without. So far, there is a paucity of data concerning the impact of anxiety/depression on Chinese IBD patients. The aim of this study was to find out the prevalence of symptoms of anxiety/depression in Chinese IBD population and its impact on IBD-related features. This is a cross-sectional study from the southwest China IBD referral center. Eligible participants were divided into those with symptoms of anxiety/depression and those without based on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Demographic data and disease duration, IBD-related surgery, tobacco use, extra-intestinal manifestations, disease activity scores, endoscopic evaluation, laboratory data and current medication use were compared between two groups. A total of 341 IBD patients [221 Crohn’s disease (CD) and 120 ulcerative colitis (UC)] were included. The prevalence of symptoms of anxiety/depression in IBD was 33.1%. CD patients with symptoms of anxiety/depression tended to have higher scores of simple endoscopic scores for Crohn’s disease (SES-CD) (p = 0.0005). UC patients with symptoms of anxiety/depression had a significantly higher Mayo score (p = 0.0017) and ulcerative colitis endoscopic index of severity (UCEIS) (p < 0.0001) than their non-anxiety/depression counterparts. CD-related surgery (p = 0.012) and Crohn's disease activity index (CDAI) (p < 0.0001) were identified as independent risk factors for symptoms of anxiety/depression in CD, while corticosteroid use (p = 0.036) as an independent risk factor for symptoms of anxiety/depression in UC. This study helps our understanding of the prevalence of symptoms of anxiety/depression in IBD patients and its impact on IBD course and reminds us to pay more attention on IBD management with anxiety/depression.

Abstract:Mental health is a significant yet overlooked aspect of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patient care, with challenges in determining optimal treatments and psychological health resources. The most common psychological conditions in patients with IBD are anxiety and depression. The increased prevalence of these mental disorders appeals to mental screening of each person diagnosed with IBD at initial consultation. There are simple and clinically viable methods available to screen for mental problems. Psychological methods may be as or even more significant as a therapeutic modality. Herein we discuss the three major areas of psychological co-morbidity in IBD: (1) the prevalence and risk factors associated with anxiety and depression disorders for patients with IBD; (2) diagnosis of psychological disorders for patients with IBD; (3) treatment with patients with IBD and mental disorders. The gastroenterologists are encouraged to screen and treat these patients with IBD and mental disorders, which may improve outcomes.

Abstract:Introduction Individuals diagnosed with Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) often experience recurring and painful symptoms, which can significantly affect their daily life, while hospitalization and/or surgery may be needed when they present complications. During the course of the disease, IBD patients may experience feelings of anxiety and/or depression and present decreased well-being. Objectives The aim of the present study was to investigate depression, anxiety, loneliness, well-being and self-esteem in patients with IBD in comparison to individuals without IBD (healthy controls), while taking into consideration demographic and clinical parameters Methods The study included 164 participants and in particular 98 patients with IBD and 66 healthy controls matched for sex and age. All participants completed Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) to assess depression and anxiety, UCLA Loneliness Scale to assess feelings of loneliness, Mental Health Continuum Short Form (MHC-SF) to assess well-being and Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSES) to assess self-esteem, while socio-demographic and clinical data were additionally recorded. Results According to the results, statistically significant differences were observed in all psychological parameters with IBD patients presenting higher depression (p<0.001), higher anxiety (p=0.002), higher loneliness (p=0.002), lower well-being (p=0.019) and lower self-esteem (p<0.001) compared to healthy controls. Among IBD patients, higher well-being was independently associated with higher self-esteem and lower anxiety, but not with depression, loneliness or patients' sex and age. Conclusions The findings highlight the importance of investigating and timely detecting psychological symptoms among patients with IBD, with a view to providing them an integrative physical and mental health care. Abstract:Background: Anxiety and depression symptoms are very common in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We aimed to explore the impact of anxiety and depression on the efficacy of medications, as well as IBD-related poor outcomes. Method: This was a prospective longitudinal observational study. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used to assess anxiety and depression symptoms. Logistic regression analyses were used to assess the association between anxiety/depression and the response to different medications. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis and Cox regression model were applied to analyze the relationship between anxiety/depression and IBD-related poor outcomes, which were defined as urgent IBD-related hospitalization, IBD-related surgery, or death. Results: A total of 325 IBD patients were enrolled, 118 of whom were treated with corticosteroids, 88 with azathioprine/6-mercaptopurine (AZA/6-MP), and 147 with anti-TNF agents. Anxiety/depression symptoms were found to be significantly related to steroid resistance, but independent of AZA/6-MP and anti-TNF agents nonresponse. There was a significant association between anxiety/depression symptoms and IBD-related poor outcomes. Coexisting with anxiety/depression symptoms was an independent influencing factor of steroid resistance and IBD-related poor outcomes. Conclusion: IBD patients with anxiety/depression symptoms were at a higher risk of developing steroid resistance and IBD-related poor outcomes. Future studies are needed to explore whether interventions for anxiety and depression will improve their response to medications and change their prognosis.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are common prevalent in patients with chronic disease, and Chronic illness are long-lasting conditions with persistent effects and complications. Depression and anxiety disorders are well known to have a negative but significant impact on the course, outcomes, long-term survival, and treatment efficacy of patients suffering from physical disease. Given the high prevalence and potential negative consequences of this type of comorbidity in elderly patients, there is an urgent need for this study to be conducted due to the scarcity of statistics on the topic among middle and older adults in the Al-Qassim region. On the other hand, early identification of people who are more likely to experience psychological distress is critical in prevention and management strategies. OBJECTIVES: To assess the severity of depression and anxiety, using validated self-report measures of middle-aged and older adults; and to determine the association between anxiety and depression levels and socio-demographic characteristics. METHODS: In February 2021 and for two months, a cross-sectional study of middle- aged and older adults from Al-Shifa hospital at Al-Qassim region was conducted with questionnaires on socio-demographic and clinical characteristics, and validated Generalized Anxiety Disorders (GAD-7), and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) anxiety and depression questionnaires. Two hundreds middle- aged and older adults participants of Al-Shifa Hospital participated in this study and agreed to complete the questionnaire. RESULTS: 79% (n=158) of participants had minimal to mild depression and 21% (n=42) had moderate-to-severe depression; the average PHQ-9 score was 7.05 (M =7.05; SD=4.4), while 81.5% (n=163) of participants had minimal to mild anxiety and 18.5% (n=37) had moderate-to-severe anxiety; the average GAD score was 6.6 (M =6.6; SD =4.3). The significant predictors of moderate-to-severe depression in the logistic regression analysis were: male sex (odds ratio (OR):0.0.272; confidence interval (CI):0.101-0.730) and psychiatric disorders (odds ratio (OR):13.131; confidence interval (CI):2.975-57.949). The significant predictors of moderate-to-severe anxiety in the logistic regression analysis were psychiatric disorders (odds ratio (OR):13.080; confidence interval (CI):3.261-52.464). There was a strong significant positive correlation between PHQ-9 score and GAD score. CONCLUSION: The study group had higher prevalence of moderate and severe depression, which was significantly associated with female sex and psychiatric disorders; while the prevalence of moderate and severe anxiety was significantly associated with the presence of psychiatric disorders. Our findings reaffirm the importance of providing appropriate specialized interventions to promote the mental health of chronically ill elderly, with a focus on high-risk groups.

Abstract:Abstract Background The impact of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) on individuals’ quality of life is well reported. Recent studies have shown that depression or anxiety affect almost 1 in 5 people with IBD and may be a predictor of active disease. We aimed to explore the burden of MHI in the Australasian IBD population and examine the real-world variation in screening and care across different sites and care settings Methods Crohn’s Colitis Care’s (CCCare) clinical quality registry (CQR) is created by deidentified data flowing across from routine care encounters. Data in the CQR for all individuals with a clinical encounter since August 2018 were interrogated in April 2023. Mental health data were collected from documentation during routine care or through patient consumer completion of embedded questionnaires, namely Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale 21 [DASS-21] and Kessler Psychological Distress Scale [K10] Results The CQR contained 6614 people with IBD with a mean age of 44.4 (SD +/- 22.09) and even gender distribution (50.9% female). 79.5% of people were from Australia and 20.5% from New Zealand. 57.1% of people had Crohn’s disease (CD), 40.4% ulcerative colitis (UC) and 2.5% IBDU with a mean disease duration of 13.3 years (SD +/-23.0). Anxiety was the 4th most listed comorbidity affecting 17.8% of individuals, depression 7th affecting 13.7% of people and both depression and anxiety 13th affecting 9.1% of people with IBD. In total 40.8% or 2 in 5 people with IBD in Australasia had received a formal diagnosis of a MHI. 2,928 consumers had been invited to complete the DASS-21 and 2,340 the K10 (44% & 35% respectively). Of the questionnaires sent, 32% of DASS-21s and 33% of K10s were completed. Rates of both invitation and completion varied significantly between centres. Invitation rates varied from 11% - 90% (p<0.001) while questionnaire completion rates varied from 26% to 46.8% (p<0.001). The mean DASS-21 score for all people with IBD was 8.1 for depression (7-10 indicating moderate disease), 6.6 for anxiety (6-7 suggests moderate disease) and 11.2 for stress (10-12 indicates moderate disease). Individuals with current fistulising CD (representing severe IBD phenotype) mean DASS-21 scores were higher than the wider IBD population, averaging 9.9 for depression (p<0.001), 7.4 for anxiety (p<0.001) & 12.9 for stress (p<0.001) Conclusion Individuals with IBD suffer from high rates of MHIs, with those suffering more severe disease phenotypes scoring worse on mental health assessment tools. Despite the availability of screening and monitoring tools, healthcare providers use these variably and insufficiently. This may result in unmet care needs. Standardisation of care addressing the psychosocial care needs of people with IBD is needed

Abstract:Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic conditions characterized by a remitting-relapsing course. Patients with IBD have an impaired quality of life and are more often affected by anxiety and depression. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and severity of anxiety and depression in patients with inactive IBD, and to identify factors associated with them. A total of 132 consecutive patients diagnosed with IBD for over 3 months that were in corticosteroid-free remission at the time of assessment were enrolled in this observational, cross-sectional study. Anxiety, depression, fatigue, and health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) were evaluated using the following self-administered questionnaires: HADS, Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy—Fatigue, and IBDQ 32. Symptoms of anxiety and depression were considered for HADS-A > 7 points and HADS-D > 7 points, respectively. Out of the 132 patients included, 76 (57.6%) were men. The median patient age was 38 years (interquartile range 30–47). Eighty-three patients (62.9%) were diagnosed with Crohn disease, and 49 (37.1%) with ulcerative colitis. Most of the patients were treated with biologics (85.6%). Anxiety was identified in 34.1% of patients, and two thirds of them (68.9%) had mild symptoms. A lower proportion of patients were presenting symptoms of depression (18.2%), the vast majority (91.7%) having mild forms. In the multivariate analysis, anxiety was significantly associated with fatigue [odds ratio (OR) 4.39, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.22–15.79, P = .02] and lower HR-QoL (OR 2.46, 95% CI: 1.70–3.91, P < .001), while depression was associated with exposure to multiple biologics (OR 3.33, 95% CI: 1.01–10.97, P = .04) and fatigue (OR 9.70, 95% CI: 1.67–56.27, P = .01). In conclusion, anxiety and depression are highly prevalent in patients with IBD even during the periods of remission. Both anxiety and depression are associated with fatigue. In addition, lower HR-QoL is associated with anxiety and exposure to multiple biologics with depression.

Abstract:Study purpose: This study investigates the relationship between anxiety, depression, and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms among university students through a comprehensive campus-wide survey. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey design was adopted in this study. A total of 437 students from three public medical universities in Saudi Arabia participated in the survey, which assessed anxiety and depression using standardized scales and GI symptoms through a tailored questionnaire. Results: The findings reveal a significant overlap between mental health disorders and GI symptoms, highlighting that students experiencing high levels of anxiety and depression frequently report GI issues. This correlation underscores the importance of integrated health strategies to address both mental and physical well-being. Conclusion: This study concludes that there is a significant correlation between anxiety, depression, and GI symptoms among university students. This highlights the need for comprehensive and integrated health interventions that address both mental and physical health to improve overall well-being and academic success in this population.

Abstract:Abstract Background Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; Crohn’s disease, CD and Ulcerative colitis, UC) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have overlapping symptoms. Few prevalence studies of IBS in quiescent IBD have used colonoscopy with histology to confirm inactive disease. The aims were (1) to determine the percentage of IBD patients in deep remission whose persistent IBS-like symptoms (IBD/IBS+) would cause them to be classified as having active disease, based on the calculation of Harvey Bradshaw Index (HBI) or UC disease activity index (UCDAI); (2) to identify demographic and disease characteristics that are associated with IBD/IBS+. Methods This was a prospective study at a single tertiary care IBD center. 96/112 patients with colonoscopy and histology confirmed quiescent disease consented and completed Rome III criteria for IBS Survey, and the hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS). Other demographic and disease specific data were collected. Results 36% (28/77) and 37% (7/19) of CD and UC patients, respectively, met diagnostic criteria for IBS. Significantly higher HBI/UCDAI scores (p = 0.005) and low short inflammatory bowel disease questionnaire (SIBDQ) scores (p ≤ 0.0001) were seen in IBD/IBS+ patients. 29% of patients in deep remission were mis-categorized by HBI/UCDAI as having active disease when they fulfilled Rome III criteria for IBS. Psychiatric diagnosis (OR 3.53 95% CI 1.2–10.2) and earlier onset of IBD (OR 1.056 95% CI 1.015–1.096) were associated with IBD/IBS+. Patients fulfilling IBS criteria had higher hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS). Conclusion IBD/IBS+ affect scoring of IBD disease activity scales and become less useful in guiding treatment plans.

Abstract:Introduction: This research examines the effects of depression and anxiety on patients' recovery and quality of life following cardiac intervention, highlighting the frequent occurrence of these psychological conditions after ICU stays and intensive rehab, emphasizing the need for addressing pain perception and providing patient education and counseling. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional research design was used, and the research was conducted in Saudi Arabia from April 2023 to September 2023. All participants were from Saudi Arabia and had cardiac intervention. Questionnaires collected data: The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD-7) questionnaire. Results: Among the 543 patients included who underwent cardiac intervention, 61.3% (n=333) were males, and 38.7% (n=210) were females. The most common types of intervention were percutaneous coronary intervention (30.8%, n=167) and coronary artery bypass grafting (26.7%, n=145). Notable comorbidities included arrhythmia (22.1%, n=120), diabetes (42.7%, n=232), high cholesterol (41.8%, n=227), hypertension (52.3%, n=284), a sedentary lifestyle (37.8%, n=205), and smoking (33.1%, n=180). Patients with depressive and anxiety symptoms were further categorized into different levels of severity based on their PHQ and GAD-7 scores, respectively. Conclusion: Our study indicated a high prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms in this population. Factors such as comorbidities, demographics, and intervention characteristics were associated with the presence and severity of these symptoms. The findings highlight the importance of addressing psychological well-being and implementing targeted interventions to improve the mental health outcomes of cardiac intervention patients in Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Objectives: Despite the recent findings of the rising incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Arab countries, there are limited data on the characteristics of IBD patients and the disease course in the Arab world. This systematic review aimed to investigate the incidence and epidemiology of IBD in the Arab world. Material and Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review that utilized a comprehensive search of PubMed, Cochrane Central, SCOPUS, Google Scholar, and Web of Science from their inception till August 2020. We included cross-sectional, prospective, and retrospective studies that examined the prevalence and/or epidemiological characteristics of IBD in Arab countries. Results: A total of 16 studies that examined IBD in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Lebanon, and Oman were included. Generally, the included studies covered the period from the early 1990s to the late 2010s. A total of 1,627 ulcerative colitis (UC) patients and 1,588 Crohn’s disease (CD) patients were included in this systematic review. The mean age at diagnosis ranged from 24.13 to 43.6 years in adult cases and from 4.5 to 16 years in pediatric cases. In most of the included studies, the majority of patients were male. The quantitative analysis revealed a pooled incidence rate of 2.33 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.2–3.4) per 100,000 persons per year for UC in the Arab world. Likewise, the pooled incidence rate for CD in the Arab world was 1.46 (95% CI 1.03–1.89) per 100,000 persons per year. Conclusion: There is a growing incidence of IBD in the Arab world, while IBD patients from Arab countries may present with some different characteristics, compared to their counterparts in Europe.
