Abstract:Despite evidence indicating the importance of self-regulated learning (SRL) for academic achievement and lifelong learning, there remains a lack of understanding regarding how teachers can effectively support their students in enacting SRL with e-learning tools/resources (SRL elearning). The purpose of this study is to investigate how teachers can support English as a second/foreign language (ESL/EFL) learners' SRL e-learning. The participants were 1473 seventh (n = 714, 48.5%, 12-15 years old) and eighth (n = 759, 51.5%, 12-16 years old) grade students in China. The proposed framework of teacher support included five dimensions, namely, SRL strategy instruction, resource support (linking SRL and e-learning practices), capacity support (scaffolding students' e-learning experience), emotional support (communication of expectations and encouragement), and creating a constructivist learning environment. According to the Multivariate Analyses of Variance (MANOVAs), high, average, and low achievers reported different levels of SRL e-learning, suggesting that SRL e-learning contributes to English learning achievement. The structural equation modeling (SEM) results revealed that teacher support for SRL e-learning plays a crucial role in students' SRL e-learning in ESL/EFL.

Abstract:Introduction: Technology in education, including language learning, is on the rise. Digital competency is essential for teachers to effectively integrate technology and enhance language teaching. It enables access to authentic materials, interactive exercises, and collaboration opportunities. However, integrating technology poses challenges for teachers. Objective: This empirical research aimed to investigate the impact of digital competency on language learning outcomes in the context of "smart education," which incorporates sustainable practices and digital technologies in the language classroom. Methods: The study adopted a quantitative approach to collect and analyze data. The sample population for the study comprised of 344 language teachers at various language schools in a metropolitan city. The data collection carried out with a digital competency questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate technique, i.e., structural equation modeling. Findings: The study found that digital competency positively correlated with language proficiency outcomes. Participants with higher levels of digital competency achieved better language learning outcomes compared to those with lower levels of digital competency. Additionally, the study found that incorporating sustainable practices, such as digitalized learning materials and virtual classrooms, positively contributed to language learning outcomes. The findings of this study suggest that digital competency plays a vital role in language learning outcomes in the context of "smart education." Discussion & recommendation: Teachers should consider incorporating digital tools and sustainable practices into their language teaching to enhance language learning outcomes. The study recommends that language educators should focus on developing digital competency and integrating sustainable practices into their language classroom to promote effective language learning.
Internet-mediated Intercultural English Language Education in China's Higher Education Institutions

Abstract:In the information age, the advent of Internet technologies has made it possible to transform language learning and teaching, through online intercultural exploration and exchange. The role of English as an international language in global communication is recognised in China's latest national guidelines for tertiary language curricula, which seek to develop professionals possessing both sound language proficiency and intercultural competence, alongside other goals such as information literacy and learner autonomy. This thesis examines the actual delivery of an intercultural dimension mediated by Internet technologies. To this end, this thesis reports an investigation into the situation of Internet-mediated intercultural English language teaching and learning at China's higher education institutions conducted between 2008 and 2009. Multi-stage and multi-site fieldwork combined a survey approach and a collective case study approach. The researcher being the primary data collection tool, data obtained from questionnaire survey, interview (and informal conversation), observation and document collection instruments have been combined. The survey findings thus not only have breadth, but also provide materials for in-depth studies of sample cases. Four cases, demonstrating a variety of institutional, individual, pedagogical and technological factors, are analysed at greater length to explore whether evidenced Internet-mediated practices might facilitate an intercultural approach to teaching and learning. Comparisons suggest that, despite their differing characteristics and contexts, there are some commonalities in terms of Internet-mediated activities entailing elements of an intercultural approach. These elements are synthesised and mapped out in an original pedagogical framework for Internet-mediated intercultural teaching and learning, with a set of guiding principles. This framework advocates establishing an Internet-mediated intra-class community as the basis for undertaking intercultural language activities, complementing the prevailing telecollaborative model for the development of intercultural communicative competence. This outcome contributes to a fuller understanding of the design of Internet-mediated intercultural language activities.
University students' approaches to online learning technologies: The roles of perceived support, affect/emotion and self-efficacy in technology-enhanced learning

Abstract:In the context of technology-enhanced learning (TEL), the quality of students' learning is determined largely by their use of online learning technologies. Building on the framework of students' approaches to learning, this study investigated students' approaches to online learning technologies (SAOLT) in relation to their perceptions of support, affect/emotion and self-efficacy in online learning environments during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on a questionnaire survey of 7210 Chinese undergraduate students, SEM analysis revealed that perceived instructional support was positively related to the deep approach to online learning technologies and negatively related to the surface approach to online learning technologies. Perceived peer support and technical support were indirectly related to the deep approach to online learning technologies, mediated by affect/emotion and self-efficacy. The findings deepen our understanding of SAOLT and yield pedagogical implications for efforts to promote a deep approach to online learning technologies, thus fostering high-quality learning in the context of TEL.

Understanding language teachers' practice with educational technology: A case from China

Abstract:This article explores how eight secondary school teachers integrated educational technology into English language teaching in Beijing, China and considers their views of the factors influencing technology use. Analysing data from classroom recordings and follow-up interviews, this study revealed that PowerPoint was the most frequently used technological application in the classroom, while the internet and other technological tools were also used by the teachers. They employed educational technology for different pedagogical purposes, including addressing professional needs in improving teaching, designing materials and conducting professional development. Teachers also claimed that they used technology to address learners' needs, such as improving engagement, enhancing language acquisition, facilitating understanding and establishing a context for language use. The study identified four important factors in influencing teachers' use of technology, including sociocultural contexts, teachers' beliefs, access to resources, and technology competence and confidence. This study suggests that a critical reflective approach is useful in assisting teachers to understand their needs and pedagogical beliefs concerning technology use. Ongoing professional development is also valuable in promoting teachers' technology competence and confidence, thereby improving the use of technology in their teaching.

Digital Literacy in a Global Context: Constructing Models for International Chinese Teachers across Regions and Countries

Abstract:The research aims to determine the factors that facilitate teaching efficiency for Chinese teachers hired abroad. It is a quantitative study that covers digital skill, cultural and linguistic compatibility, technology policy, integration of technology into the curriculum, training and professional development. However, the current research on these aspects is inadequate in giving a broad understanding of the interaction of the above factors, especially for Chinese educators working in foreign countries. This research seeks to uncover the correlations between these factors and provide recommendations for sound instruction. An e-survey was administered to 350 educational specialists from China, and the data was analyzed through Smart PLS version 3.0 software and structural equation modeling (SEM). Findings indicate that teachers’ digital literacy capability predicts technology use in their instruction. The linguistic and cultural dynamism is therefore useful in developing a preparatory setting for technology that is essential in curriculum implementation. In addition, it was ascertained that continuing education also mediates the incorporation of technology and teachers’ efficiency. The results stress the need to focus on automation, infrastructure, and professional development for effective integrated tech-based learning. Conferences, seminars, availability of learning resources as well as training and mentorship are essential to ensuring efficacy in teaching and preparing for a variety of contexts in education.
Utilizing Design Thinking to Create Digital Self-Directed Learning Environment for Enhancing Digital Literacy in Thai Higher Education

Abstract:Aim/Purpose: To explore the effectiveness of utilizing the design thinking approach in developing digital self-directed learning environment to enhance digital literacy skills in Thai higher education. Background: To foster digital literacy skills in higher education, Thai students require more than access to technology. Emphasizing digital self-directed learning and incorporating Design Thinking approach, can empower students to learn and develop their digital skills effectively. This study explores the impact of digital self-directed learning environment, developed using a design thinking approach, on enhancing digital literacy skills among higher education students in Thailand. Methodology: The research methodology involves developing a digital self-directed learning environment, collecting and analyzing data, and using statistical analysis to compare the outcomes between different groups. The sample includes 60 undergraduate students from the School of Industrial Education and Technology at King Mongkut Institute of Technology, divided into a control group (n=30) and an experimental group (n=30). Data analysis involves mean, standard deviation, and one-way MANOVA. Contribution: This research contributes to the evidence supporting the use of Design Thinking in developing digital self-directed learning environment, demonstrating its effectiveness in meeting learners’ needs and improving learning outcomes in higher education. Findings: Key findings include: 1) the digital media and self-directed learning activities plan developed through the design thinking approach received high-quality ratings from experts, with mean scores of 4.87 and 4.93, respectively; and 2) post-lesson comparisons of learning outcome and digital literacy assessment scores revealed that the group utilizing digital media with self-directed learning activities had significantly higher mean scores than the traditional learning group, with a significance level of 0.001. Recommendations for Practitioners: Practitioners in higher education should use design thinking to develop digital self-directed learning environments that enhance digital literacy skills. This approach involves creating high-quality digital media and activities, promoting engagement and improved outcomes. Collaboration and stakeholder involvement are essential for effective implementation. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers should continue to explore the effectiveness of design thinking approaches in the development of learning environments, as well as their influence on different educational aspects such as student engagement, satisfaction, and overall learning outcomes. Impact on Society: By enhancing digital literacy skills among higher education students, this study contributes to the development of a digitally skilled workforce, encourages lifelong learning, and aids individuals in effectively navigating the challenges of the digital era. Future Research: Future research could explore a broader range of student demographics and educational settings to validate the effectiveness of the Design Thinking approach in enhancing digital literacy. This could include integrating design thinking with alternative digital learning and teaching methods to further improve digital literacy.

Abstract:The study explored the multidimensional relationships between educational situation perception, teacher support, online learning engagement and academic self-efficacy in technology-based language learning in a sample of Chinese undergraduate students, and meanwhile examined the mediating effects of academic self-efficacy and teacher support. A total of 392 (126 male and 266 female) Chinese university students reported on their perceived educational situation, teacher support, online learning engagement, and academic self-efficacy. Results showed that educational situation perception was significantly and positively associated with teacher support, online learning engagement and academic self-efficacy; teacher support and academic self-efficacy was positively correlated with online learning engagement. More importantly, academic self-efficacy as well as teacher support mediated the relationship between educational situation perception and online learning engagement. These findings extended previous research by considering both the external factors (i.e., educational situation; teacher support) and the internal factors (i.e., academic self-efficacy) of influencing students’ online learning engagement in technology-based language learning, thereby contributing to enhancing our understanding of the joint drive of the inherent and extrinsic power mechanisms. This study highlighted the following aspects: (1) strengthening the consideration of the key elements of the educational situation; (2) clarifying the pivotal position of intelligent technology in educational situations; and (3) emphasizing the reconstruction of intelligence teaching ecology driven by learning activities. Besides, this study indicated the significance of elevating teachers’ awareness, willingness and capacity of the substantial supports in enhancing students’ online learning engagement and would inform that the future research on the connotation and ways of teacher support should be responding to technology-based learning environments.

Explaining preservice teachers' intention and behavior to use technology‐enabled learning in China: A multi‐group analysis across experiences

Abstract:This study examines the development of preservice teachers' intention and behavior to use of Technology‐Enabled Learning (TEL) within the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framework. Despite growing interest, the effective integration of TEL among preservice teachers remains a challenge. Engaging 1023 participants ‐ senior undergraduates with practical TEL experience in real classroom settings ‐ the study employed structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze the relationships between key factors ‐ experience, subjective norms, attitudes, and perceived behavioral control ‐ and their influence on the intention and behavior to use of TEL. The findings revealed that behavioral intention did not significantly influence the actual use of TEL, whereas perceived behavioral control acted both as a determinant of TEL use and as a mediator in the relationship between subjective norms and TEL usage. Additionally, while subjective norms showed minimal impact on behavioral intention, attitudes and perceived behavioral control emerged as crucial antecedent variables and mediators. The multi‐group analysis using SEM revealed that preservice teachers' experience with TEL moderated the first half of the mediating pathway between subjective norms, perceived behavioral control and the actual use of TEL. Notably, multi‐group analysis indicated that as preservice teachers gained more experience with TEL, the influence of subjective norms on perceived behavioral control weakened. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the TPB framework and its extended models in the context of TEL in teacher education, offering valuable insights for developing more effective TEL training and guidance strategies, ultimately aiming to enhance preservice teachers' proficiency and engagement with TEL.

Abstract:The rapid advancement of information technology and ongoing education reforms have introduced smart education as an innovative teaching model. This study aims to explore the application and impact of smart education platforms in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) within four junior high schools in China. Through a detailed analysis of questionnaire responses from English language teachers, the study investigates the impact of these platforms on teaching practices. Results indicate that using smart teaching platforms has increased teachers’ engagement, motivation, and satisfaction. Additionally, teachers have reported a deeper understanding of smart education concepts, improved practical teaching skills, and overall professional development. Despite these benefits, the study highlights the challenges of implementing smart education platforms. The findings suggest that while smart education platforms can potentially enhance TESOL effectiveness, further improvements, and extensive research are necessary to optimize their use fully.

Abstract:Due to the tremendous advancement of mobile technologies, mobile assisted English language learning (MAELL) has become an increasingly emergent research area. English is taught as a key subject in the national curriculum from primary education until the second year of university in China. Proficiency of English has great value for individuals and on a societal level. Moving beyond the ‘mobile age’ and ‘digital native’ rhetoric, the objective of this present paper is to investigate university students’ perceptions and acceptance of mobile technology use in second language learning in higher education. The study also aims to investigate whether cultural factors affect these perceptions. The research is conducted in a Chinese comprehensive university in Harbin, adopting a quantitative research design. Data will be obtained by means of questionnaires distributed to approximately 739 undergraduates. To access students’ perceptions of mobile technology use in language learning, I have employed and extended Venkatesh, Morris, Davis and Davis’s Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), which is a synthesis of eight well-established technology acceptance models and has been validated in empirical settings as having superior explanatory power over other single models. Hofstede’s cultural dimensions have also been drawn upon to understand learners’ cultural perceptions. These dimensions represent some relevance to the mindset of learners which is likely to affect to some degree students’ attitude towards mobile learning or English as a second language learning to some degree. This theoretical position places learners at the centre of their English learning and decision-making regarding technology use. It directs the investigation into contextually mediated perceptions and practices of English learning in the mobile age. The findings illustrate the general trend of undergraduates’ positive perceptions of mobile-assisted English language learning in China, as well as specific attributes that may affect their contextually mediated perceptions from a cultural perspective. The findings show that the participants’ attitude towards mobile learning are very positive, especially regarding ‘performance expectancy’ and ‘social influence’. The statistical analysis also suggests that Hofstede’s cultural characteristics could partially explain the diversified learners’ perceptions of mobile learning. This paper provides a theoretical framework that challenges the current existing beliefs about technology acceptance models by extending culture as a key moderating construct, leading to a comprehensive understanding of university students’ perceptions and behaviours concerning mobile-assisted language learning in China. The paper concludes by suggesting ways or approaches to maximise the learning potential of mobile technologies for English learners in higher education (HE) in China.

Modeling Chinese Teachers' Attitudes Toward Using Technology for Teaching with a SEM Approach

Abstract:The aim of this study was to examine factors that influence Chinese teachers' attitudes toward using technology. Using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as the framework, the study considered the social and culture context in China, and included a new external variable-policy-along with perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, facilitation conditions, and subjective norms, into the original TAM framework. Structural equation modeling was implemented on questionnaire data collected from 1,423 teachers in China. The expanded model revealed a goodness-of-fit (TLI = 0.931, CFI = 0.942, RMSEA = 0.048, and SRMR = 0.039) and it explained 52.7% of the variance in teachers' attitudes toward using technology. Chinese teachers' perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and national policy were determined to be the factors with positive direct influence on teachers' attitudes toward using technology. Subjective norms were found to have an indirect influence. This study contributes to the growing body of non-Western multicultural studies on the TAM and also serves as a starting point in understanding teachers' attitudes toward technology use in China.
Investigating the Factors That Sustain College Teachers' Attitude and Behavioral Intention toward Online Teaching

Abstract:Online teaching is considered an important approach for achieving sustainable learning and education, and college teachers' attitude and behavioral intention are essential for the sustainable adoption of online teaching practice in higher education institutions. To examine the influencing factors that sustain teachers' attitude toward online teaching and behavioral intention, we conducted a cross-sectional study based on a sample of 1102 college teachers in Central China using hierarchical linear regression analysis to explore the possible influencing factors at the following four levels: individual experience, environmental support, self-perception, and technology acceptance. The study results show that the subjective norms, readiness, beliefs, and perceived usefulness of online teaching had a significant impact on the teachers' attitude toward online teaching and behavioral intention. Nevertheless, the effect varied with factors like the online teaching load and teachers' technology self-efficacy, and their influence seemed to be singular, affecting the teachers' attitude toward online teaching or behavioral intention exclusively. In contrast, previous online teaching experience did not notably affect either. The findings of this study reveal the complex interactions of the factors that influence college teachers' disposition toward and decisions about online teaching practices and emphasize the need for targeted strategies to maintain and enhance online education in the post-pandemic era.

Abstract:In the new normal, online education has become a norm and is considered equally important as traditional face-to-face education. Although online teaching has improved accessibility, reduced management costs, and expanded educational opportunities, there are also some issues, such as whether technology and internet access are widespread and whether the quality of online education is better or worse compared to previous modes. With the rapid development of online education, it is crucial to investigate the key factors influencing university teachers' continuous usage of online teaching platforms and their working mechanisms, which is of great significance for improving the level of educational informatization and promoting educational modernization. This study mainly explores the continuous usage intention of online teaching platforms by Chinese university teachers under the new normal and its influencing factors, aiming to provide theoretical support and practical insights for improving educational informatization, promoting educational modernization, and designing and optimizing online teaching platforms. This study builds a new theoretical framework based on the technology acceptance model (TAM), UTAUT model, and the theory of planned behavior (TPB). From April to November 2024, 343 questionnaires were collected from Chinese university teachers. Combining structural equation modeling (SEM) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), the key factors influencing teachers' continuous usage of online platforms and their configuration relationships are systematically discussed. Not only are the key factors verified, but the configuration relationships are also revealed, providing deeper insights for universities to design, promote, and optimize online teaching platforms and offering theoretical support and practical guidance for promoting sustainable educational development.

Abstract:When teachers engage in transnational higher education, exposure can challenge their existing beliefs and expand their understanding of effective pedagogical approaches. Collaborative teaching can influence teachers' beliefs through collaboration and interactions. Thus, this study investigated changes in Chinese university teachers' epistemological beliefs and beliefs about teaching and learning by addressing the following research questions: Are there any changes across time in beliefs about epistemology, learning, and teaching among teaching faculty members working in transnational higher education (TNHE)? To what extent do epistemological beliefs and beliefs about teaching change among teaching faculty members working in TNHE? Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used during the 2018–2022 academic years. A paired sample t-test revealed significant improvements in constructivist teaching (CT), innate ability (IA), and authority knowledge (AK). The semi-structured group interviews provided supporting evidence. The findings demonstrate that sharing and collaboration can promote changes in teachers' epistemological beliefs and their beliefs about teaching and learning. Chinese teachers tend to develop more constructivist and student-centered beliefs after working with foreign colleagues. Transnational faculty collaboration promotes professional growth and diverse thoughts. By using mix-method examination of teachers' epistemological and pedagogical beliefs within the TNHE context, this study provides empirical evidence supporting the development of tailored professional development opportunities.

The current study intends to update both the traditional theories and practice of TEFL in the new age of digital transformation, which will have effective theoretical and empirical implications in the practice of TEFL in smarter learning environments. Methodology. The present study was designed in two phases and employed a qualitative methodology with a descriptive design. It tried to answer how this paradigm change affects the theories of TEFL. Results. In the first phase of the study, the Preliminary Framework for Smart Learning Environments by Spector was adapted and expanded into the Model of Smarter Learning Environments based on the challenges and opportunities brought about by the new age of digital transformation. The second phase involved reviewing Krashen’s Acquisition/Learning Hypothesis, exploring its relevance and applicability to TEFL in the context of the Model of Smarter Learning Environments. The aim of this phase was to identify the potential challenges and opportunities associated with managing TEFL classroom resources within this new framework. The investigation concluded that the mandatory application of fully online teaching, in the case of TEFL, which resulted from the New-Age Digital Transformation, requires reviewing the traditional theories of Second Language Learning and Teaching. It has created challenges and opportunities in the class resource management. Finally, providing digital facilities and training was proposed as a solution to the challenges.
Technology Acceptance, Technological Self-Efficacy, and Attitude Toward Technology-Based Self-Directed Learning: Learning Motivation as a Mediator

Abstract:This study explored the contribution of technology acceptance and technological self-efficacy to attitude toward technology-based self-directed learning in a sample of Chinese undergraduate students. The study also inquired into whether learning motivation mediated these associations. A total of 332 undergraduate students of college English course were enrolled to participate in questionnaires regarding their technology acceptance, technological self-efficacy, attitude toward technology-based self-directed learning, and learning motivation. Results indicated that students' technology acceptance and technological self-efficacy were related to their attitude toward technology-based self-directed learning. The findings also indicated that learning motivation mediated the relations of technology acceptance, technological self-efficacy, and attitude toward technology-based self-directed learning. Specifically, students experiencing greater technology acceptance and technological self-efficacy showed higher attitude toward technology-based self-directed learning. This study highlighted the significance of learning motivation as a mediating mechanism illustrating relations between students' perception of technology environments and their attitude toward technology-based self-directed learning.

Abstract:This phenomenological study explored the experiences of language learners in the digital age, specifically investigating the intersection of digital literacy, technostress, online engagement, autonomy, and academic success. Twenty participants, selected through purposive sampling, shared Chinese as their native language and were between 18 and 20 years old, with five participants being female. Employing interviews and document analysis, the study aimed to understand the subjective meanings, emotions, and perceptions associated with these phenomena. The findings revealed the multifaceted nature of technostress, the crucial role of digital literacy in shaping online engagement and autonomy, and the nuanced impact on academic success. These qualitative insights contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex relationships in the digital language learning landscape. The study has implications for educators, materials developers, syllabus designers, and policy-makers, providing practical insights to enhance language learning experiences in the digital era. Future research may further explore specific dimensions uncovered in this study to adapt educational practices to the evolving digital terrain.

Abstract:As digital technologies continue to permeate all aspects of contemporary society, the educational domain, particularly foreign language teaching, has also significantly transformed. During the 1990s, the introduction of information and communication technologies (ICT) into language teaching was initially met with enthusiasm among educators. However, what originally started as integrating multimedia resources into the learning environment soon escalated into a comprehensive transformation, which included innovations such as online platforms and adaptive learning systems that became part of language teaching curricula. This evolution led to fundamental changes in pedagogical approaches, teacher-student communication, and the overall educational setting within classrooms. As digital technologies evolved and diversified, so did the attitudes of language teachers, whose initial enthusiastic welcome transformed into growing doubt. This research aimed to investigate how digital technologies within the domain of language instruction are utilized and to explore the prevailing attitudes regarding their implementation. The study spanned two decades: the periods from 1990 to 2000 and from 2013 to 2023. Semantic literature analysis of 300 scientific publications was used to determine the educators’ reactions toward the application of ICT, which were categorized into positive, negative, mixed, and research-oriented attitudes. Additionally, a survey of 88 foreign language teachers was conducted to collect empirical data. A clear trend is observed in how language educators perceive and apply technologies in their classrooms. The authors concluded that these tools remain popular among educators despite increasing skepticism and caution regarding ICT efficacy.
