Abstract:Root uptake, translocation, and subcellular distribution of six pesticides (dinotefuran, thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, imazethapyr, propiconazole, and chlorpyrifos) with K-ow ranging from -0.549 to 4.7 were investigated in wheat to study transportation and accumulation of pesticides. The root bioconcentration factor (RCF) of pesticides decreased with water solubility (R-2 = 0.6121) and increased with hydrophobicity (when the pH-adjusted log K-ow > 2, R-2 = 0.925), respectively. The translocation of neutral pesticides from roots to shoots increased positively with water solubility (R-2 > 0.6484) but decreased with hydrophobicity (R-2 > 0.8039). The subcellular fraction concentration factor (SFCF) increased linearly with hydrophobicity of the tested pesticides (R-2 > 0.958). The log RCF was positively correlated with log SFCF in root cell walls (R-2 = 0.9894) and organelles (R-2 = 0.9786). Transportation of the pesticides from roots to stems and stems to leaves was adversely affected by the log SFCF of cell walls and organelles of roots (R-2 > 0.7997) and stems (R-2 > 0.6666), respectively. Hydrophobicity-dependent SFCF is a factor governing accumulation of pesticides in roots after uptake and their subsequent upward translocation. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Determination and Occurrence of Natural and Synthetic Glucocorticoids in Surface Waters

Abstract:Glucocorticoids (GCs) have been increasingly reported to have adverse effects on aquatic organisms, but the lack of comprehensive analytical methods for a broad number of GCs has limited the effective management of pollution by these molecules in surface and coastal waters. In this study, we developed an original analytical method for simultaneously monitoring 25 natural GCs, and 43 synthetic GCs (4 hydrocortisone types, 6 acetonide types, 8 betamethasone types, 14 halogenated esters, and 11 labile prodrug esters) in water samples. Of the river samples investigated, 15 natural and 25 synthetic compounds were detected with the concentrations ranging from 0.13 ng/L (11-epitetrahydrocortisol) to 433 ng/L (cortisone) and from 0.05 (clobetasol) to 94 ng/L (prednisolone), respectively. Thirteen natural metabolites of cortisol (CRL) were first detected, and their concentrations were up to 36 times higher than that of CRL. Hydrocortisone-type GCs were the dominant synthetic compounds (<= 154 ng/L), followed by halogenated esters (<= 81 ng/L), acetonide type GCs (<= 57 ng/L), betamethasone type GCs (<= 32 ng/L), and labile prodrug esters (<= 22 ng/L). Considering the relative potencies for detected GCs compared to dexamethasone, halogenated esters predominantly contributed to the GC activities in the samples. Notably, this is the first report of the halogenated esters 11-oxo fluticasone propionate (OFP) and cloticasone propionate (CTP) in environmental waters. Untreated wastewater is the main source of GCs in the studied waters, and the concentration ratios between natural and synthetic GCs can be used as potential indicators of sewage input. Because of the high detected concentrations and bioactivity potency of halogenated GCs, they are the main contributors to GC activities in the studied waters, and deserved more study in the future.

Abstract:Glucocorticoids (GCs), as important endocrine disrupting compounds and emerging contaminants, could have irreversible adverse effects on aquatic organisms even at ng/L levels. However, previous studies have only focused on the dissolved concentrations of GCs in the water, and limited data are available for their occurrences in the solid phase. In this study, the occurrence, distribution, and environmental risks of 61 natural and synthetic GCs in surface water of the Yellow River Delta (YRD) were simultaneously analyzed by investigating water, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediment samples at 64 sites in six major rivers in the wet season. Overall, 51 GCs were detected in all samples from different matrices, and their concentrations were in the range of not detected (ND)-274 ng/L in water, ND-42 ng/g dry weight (dw) in SPM and ND-9.98 ng/g dw in sediment. Natural GCs were the dominant compounds in all samples, followed by synthetic halogenated esters. High concentrations of GCs were observed in discharge outlet samples from livestock farming, aquaculture and industrial production, and the composition differences of GCs between human/animal sources and industrial sources could be used as indicators to identify pollution sources. Most GCs were distributed in the water phase, while compounds with higher log octanol/water partition coefficients (log Kow) tended to be adsorbed to SPM and sediment. The spatial distribution of GCs was primarily affected by anthropogenic activities and hydrodynamic conditions. Four synthetic compounds (budesonide [BD], fluocinolone acetonide [FOA], fluticasone propionate [FP], and clobetasol propionate [CBSP]) were identified as the main contributors to GC activity with a combined contribution of 57 %-95 %. Risk assessment using the risk quotient revealed that low to moderate risks are posed to aquatic organisms in surface water.

Abstract:The adsorption and desorption behaviors of carbendazim (CBD) and thiamethoxam (TMX) were systematically studied in five different agricultural soils. The adsorption and desorption isotherms of CBD and TMX in the five different soils were fitted well by the Freundlich model. The Freundlich adsorption coefficient (Kfads) and Freundlich desorption coefficient (Kfdes) of CBD in the five different soils were 1.46–19.53 and 1.81–3.33, respectively. The corresponding values of TMX were 1.19–4.03 and 2.07–6.45, respectively. The adsorption affinity and desorption ability of the five different soils for CBD and TMX depended mainly on soil organic matter content (OMC) and cation exchange capacity (CEC). Desorption hysteresis occurred in the desorption process of CBD and TMX in the five different agricultural soils, especially for TMX. It is concluded that the adsorption–desorption ability of CBD was much higher than that of TMX in the five different agricultural soils, which was attributed to soil OMC and CEC.

Abstract:Exploring traditional neonicotinoid pesticides substitutes has become one of the global scientific attentions because of their hazardous environmental impacts. Cycloxaprid (CYC) is considered to be a promising candidate alternative. But the environmental behaviors and fate of CYC in different planting system remain poorly understood. The accumulation of 14C-labeled CYC stereoisomers within different parts of Chinese cabbage (Brassica chinensis L.) was investigated, with a particular focus on the foliar absorption, translocation and stereoselectivity of CYC, during a laboratory trial. In general, the stereoisomers 14C-5R,8S-CYC and 14C-5S,8R-CYC, their metabolites, as well as the breakdown and reaction products can be transferred in both acropetal and basipetal directions. Most of the two stereoisomers absorbed by plants remained in the treated leaves, whereas a small amount was distributed to the roots. The amount of 14C in the stalks varied among the experimental time points. At 192 h after treatment (HAT), the detected radioactivity of both 14C-5R,8S-CYC and 14C-5S,8R-CYC in the leaves above the treated leaf (LATL) was higher than that in the leaves below the treated leaf (LBTL). However, the stereoisomers of CYC underwent nonstereoselective absorption and translocation in this trial. This information implies that racemic CYC and its metabolites should be a main research focus. Thus, the obtained results provide implications for a more accurate prediction about the risk assessment of CYC, which will be helpful for guiding its rational use as well as securing the ecological environment safety and human health.
Chemical Factors Affecting Uptake and Translocation of Six Pesticides in Soil by Maize (zea Mays L.)

Abstract:Uptake of residual pesticides in a soil by a certain crop plant may be governed by their physicochemical properties. Uptake and translocation of pesticides (imidacloprid, acetamiprid, tricyclazole, azoxystrobin, tebuconazole and difenoconazole) with the octanol/water partition coefficient (log Kow) ranging from 0.57 to 4.36 were investigated in soil with maize as a model plant. The results show that all tested pesticides in soil were uptaken by maize with accumulation amount of 27.73, 17.75, 18.96, 12.56, 10.66 and 2.13 μg for imidacloprid, acetamiprid, tricyclazole, azoxystrobin, tebuconazole and difenoconazole at 14 d, respectively. The accumulation amount was negatively correlated with adsorption coefficients and positively correlated with pesticide concentration in in situ pore water (CIPW). Root bioconcentration factor varied widely from 0.61 for imidacloprid to 974.64 for difenoconazole was positively correlated with log Kow and molecular weight but negatively with water solubility. Conversely, translocation factor varied from 0 for difenoconazole to 1.64 for imidacloprid was negatively correlated with log Kow but positively with water solubility. It determined that uptake, accumulation and translocation of the pesticides in soil by maize are governed by their physicochemical properties, especially log Kow. CIPW is an appropriate candidate to evaluate the accumulation of pesticides in maize from soil.
Adsorption kinetics of 20 glucocorticoids at environmentally relevant concentrations in wastewater by powdered activated carbons and development of surrogate models

Abstract:Glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely used in the treatment of the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), and the toxicity of GCs to aquatic organisms has aroused widespread concern. Powdered activated carbon (PAC) has proven effective in removing various trace organic pollutants. In this study, the adsorption behaviors of 20 typical GCs onto PACs were investigated at environmentally relevant concentrations (ng/L) in real wastewater, using four commercially available PACs (HDB, WPH, 20BF, PWA). The results showed that PAC adsorption was feasible for GC removal at ng/L concentrations. After adsorption for 60 min, the GC removal efficiencies obtained by HDB, WPH, 20BF, and PWA were 90-98 %, 89-97 %, 84-96 %, and 71-90 %, respectively. The adsorption processes of 20 GCs on PACs were well fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetics model (with R 2 >0.98). Among the four PACs, HDB achieved the highest rates because of the electrostatic attraction between HDB (positively charged) and the complex of GCs and natural organic matter (GC-NOM, negatively charged). Among the 20 GCs, compounds with substitutions of halogen atoms or five-membered rings at C-17 achieved higher adsorption rates because of the enhanced formation of hydrogen bonds and a resulting increase in electron density. In addition, surrogate models with total fluorescence (TF) and ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (UV254) were developed to monitor the attenuation trend of GCs during adsorption processes. Compared with the UV254 model, the TF model showed better sensitivity to GC monitoring, which could greatly simplify the water quality monitoring process and facilitate online monitoring of GCs in water.
In Vitro Assessment of Corticosteroid Effects of Eight Chiral Herbicides.

Abstract:Information regarding the enantioselective endocrine disruption of chiral herbicides is scarce. This study assessed the disrupting effects of eight typical chiral herbicides on corticosteroids (including glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids). Enantioselectivity of eight chiral herbicides were evaluated for their agonistic/antagonistic effects on glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) with CHOK1 cell line using reporter gene assay. Their influence on the production of corticosteroids were further investigated in H295R cell line using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). None of the racemates or enantiomers of eight chiral herbicides exhibited GR or MR agonistic activity at non-cytotoxic concentrations. However, rac-propisochlor and S-imazamox antagonized cortisol-induced transactivation of GR by 21.79% and 38.73% at the concentration of 1.0 x 10(-7) M and 1.0 x 10(-6) M, respectively, and R-napropamide remarkably attenuated aldosterone-induced MR transactivation by 68.78% at 1.0 x 10(-6) M. The secretion of cortisol was significantly restrained after treated with 1.0 x 10(-6) M rac-propisochlor and rac-/R-napropamide at the concentration of 1.0 x 10(-6) M by 26.49%, 30.10% and 35.27%, respectively, while this glucocorticoid was remarkably induced by 1.0 x 10(-5) M rac-diclofop-methyl and its two enantiomers at the concentration of 1.0 x 10(-5) M by 75.60%, 100.1% and 68.78%, respectively. Exposure to rac-propisochlor (1.0 x 10(-6) M), S-diclofop-methyl (1.0 x 10(-5) M) or rac-/S-/R- acetochlor (1.0 x 10(-6) M) and rac-/S-/R-lactofen (1.0 x 10(-6) M) inhibited the secretion of aldosterone by approximately 40%. Our findings suggested that chiral herbicides disrupted corticosteroid homeostasis in an enantioselective way. Therefore, more comprehensive screening is required to better understand the ecological and health risks of chiral pesticides.
Desorption kinetics of tetracyclines in soils assessed by diffusive gradients in thin films

Abstract:Tetracyclines (TCs) are frequently detected in agricultural soils worldwide, causing a potential threat to crops and human health. In this study, diffusive gradients in thin films technique (DGT) was used to measure the distribution and exchange rates of three TCs (tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and chlortetracycline (CTC)) between the solid phase and solution in five farmland soils. The relationship between the accumulated masses with time suggested that TCs consumption in soil solution by DGT would induce the supply from the soil solid phase. The distribution coefficient for the labile antibiotics (Kdl), response time (Tc) and desorption/adsorption rates (kb and kf) between dissolved and sorbed TCs were derived from the dynamic model of DIFS (DGT induced fluxes in soils). The Kdl showed similar sizes of labile solid phase pools for TC and OTC while larger pool sizes were observed for CTC in the soils. Although the concentrations of CTC were lowest in soil solution, the potential hazard caused by continuous release from soil particles could not be ignored. The long response time (>30 min in most cases) suggested that the resupply of TCs from soil solids was limited by their desorption rates (1.26-121 × 10-6 s-1). The soils in finer texture, with higher clay and silt contents (<50 μm) showed a greater potential for TCs release.
Sorption and transport of trenbolone and altrenogest photoproducts in soil-water systems

Abstract:This study evaluated the sorption and transport potential of seven phototransformation products of 17α-trenbolone, 17β-trenbolone, trendione, and altrenogest, along with the parent trienone steroids in batch and column soil-water systems. In batch systems, the target solutes exhibited linear isotherms, with values for sorption coefficients (log Koc) of parent steroids (2.46-2.76) higher than those for photoproducts (1.92-2.57). In column systems, the estimated retardation factors (Rsol) for parents (2.7-5.1) were ∼2-5 times higher than those for photoproducts (0.84-1.7). The log Koc (R2 = 0.75) and Rsol (R2 = 0.89-0.98) were well correlated with measured log Kow values, indicating that hydrophobic partitioning governed the soil-solute interaction of these biologically potent compounds in soil-water systems. These data indicated that photoproducts exhibited reduced sorption affinity and increased transport potential relative to more hydrophobic parent structures. In agroecosystems, traditional runoff management practices would be expected to exhibit reduced treatment effectiveness for photoproducts relative to the parent compounds of commonly used trienone steroids.
Pollution characteristics and ecological risk assessment of glucocorticoids in the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River Basin

Abstract:Glucocorticoids, which are one of the most extensively used steroid hormones, are typical endocrine disruptors. In recent years, glucocorticoids have been widely detected in surface waters such as rivers and lakes, but there are relatively few studies focusing on their ecological risk assessment. In this study, the pollution characteristics of seven glucocorticoids were studied in the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River Basin, and ecological risk assessments were performed using the risk quotient method. The results showed that seven glucocorticoids were detected at different levels at eight sampling sites. Among these glucocorticoids, prednisone had the highest value of 238.27 ng/L in the wet season, with pollution levels significantly higher than those reported in other areas. The ecological risk evaluation showed that prednisone, prednisolone, dexamethasone, and hydrocortisone acetate all had risk quotient values greater than 1 in the studied water environment, posing a high ecological risk. This study provides a scientific foundation for the in-depth study of the pollution characteristics and ecological risk of glucocorticoids in water bodies in the Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River Basin.

The Sorption Behavior and Bioavailability of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Soils

Abstract:Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) pose a threat to the environment because of their potential for long-range atmospheric transport, bioaccumulation and toxicity. The POPs behave dynamically in the environment according to their different processes e. g. volatilization, sorption, desorption and transportation. Environmental variables like temperature, soil pH and moisture have serious effects on POPs behavior in soil. Organic as well as inorganic compounds may react with the xenobiotics and play an important role in their transformation in soil. Manganese and iron oxides and clay minerals (e. g. smectites containing Fe(III)) had well-documented properties to promote the oxidation of a number of organic pollutants. Organic matter is considered the most important factor limiting the availability and mobility of POPs in soil and a substantial percentage of the organic contaminants applied to a soil might become associated with soil humic fraction. Organic pollutants strongly adsorbed to carbonaceous sorbents such as black carbon. In particular, activated charcoal (AC) had a strong adsorptive capacity due to its high specific surface area. Adsorption to activated charcoal could render hazardous organic pollutants in soils and sediments less available to organisms and hindered their dispersal into unaffected environment. Some studies also showed that some sorbents from natural organic materials, such as peat, soybean stalk and pine needle under superheated temperature/pressure conditions, significantly affected the sorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated soils. Natural materials significantly decreased the extractability and bioavailability of POPs from contaminated soils. Organic matter also plays a vital role in controlling the contamination of POPs in soil. The rhizosphere effect is showing promising to control POPs contamination in the soil environment. This review evaluated the work on the environmental behavior and bioavailability of POPs in soils as affected by various environmental variables.
Sorption and Dissipation of Tetracyclines in Soils and Compost

Abstract:Two agricultural soils were collected from Dahu and Pinchen counties and swine manure compost (SMC) from Ping-tung County in Taiwan, China to investigate the sorption and dissipation of three tetracyclines (TCs), i.e., oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TC) and chlortetracycline (CTC), in compost, soils and soil/compost mixtures with different organic carbon (OC) contents. There were seven treatments in total. TCs were most strongly adsorbed to SMC in all treatments due to the high OC content. When SMC was present in the soils, the sorption of TCs was significantly enhanced, which might be attributed to the increased OC content and CEC. The adsorption of TCs showed non-linear adsorption isotherms and fitted well to the Freundlich model. After 49 d of incubation at 25 °C in soils and soil/compost mixtures in the dark, TCs elapsed in all substrates, with the time required for 50% degradation (DT50) between 20 and 41 d, and the time for 90% degradation (DT90) between 68 and 137 d. Soil amended with compost enhanced the stability of TCs and reduced their mobility. The dissipation of TCs in a soil environment was slow, indicating that these compounds might be persistent in soil.
Sorption and desorption of seven steroidal synthetic progestins in five agricultural soil-water systems

Abstract:Manure fertilization and wastewater irrigation can introduce the biologically potent synthetic progestins into agricultural soils, causing endocrine disruption in organisms of nearby surface waters. Therefore, this study investigated the sorption and desorption potential of etonogestrel, medroxyprogesterone, gestodene, norgestrel, cyproterone acetate, levonorgestrel, and dienogest in five agricultural soil-water systems. Sorption data were well-described by the linear sorption model. In most batch systems, cyproterone acetate exhibited the highest affinities for soils, followed by etonogestrel, medroxyprogesterone, levonorgestrel, gestodene, norgestrel, and dienogest. The sorption magnitudes (logKoc or logKd) were significantly correlated with the progestin hydrophobicities (R2 = 0.72-0.86, p < 0.05). The Kd values of the progestins were also significantly correlated with organic carbon content and pore volumes of the soils (R2 = 0.68-0.98, p < 0.05). In addition, 0.5 M urea resulted in 3-19% decreases in Kd values of the progestins. Taken together, these data indicated that hydrophobic partitioning interaction, hydrogen bonding interaction, and pore filling were the sorption mechanisms for the progestins in soil-water systems. No significant desorption hysteresis was observed for the progestins, indicating that they can be readily desorbed under rainfall or irrigation events. Based on the sorption and desorption data, we estimated the dynamic transport of the progestins in conventional agricultural management systems, and predicted the concentrations of the progestins as a function of soil-sorbed concentration, water-soil ratio, and dilution factor of receiving waters. This study will improve the understanding of the risks posed by the progestins under field-scale hydrological conditions.

Abstract:The long-term groundwater contamination risks posed by steroidal estrogens (SEs) in animal-manured agricultural soils are closely associated with the soil organic matter (SOM) content and composition. In this study, the bioavailability of estrone (E1) and 17β-estradiol (17β-E2) under different sorption mechanism in humic acids (HA1 and HA2) and humin (HM) extracted with sequential alkaline-extraction technique (SAET) were examined. These SOMs extracted by SAET showed various properties and sorption characteristics for SEs. The alkyl carbon and condensed SOM increased during SAET, but aromatic carbon decreased and the same trend for polarity. Quick sorption was the major SEs sorption mechanism on HA1 and HA2, which contributed more than 69%; whilst slow sorption rate was about 50% in soil and HM. The logKoc values were proportional to the TOC of SOM according to Freundlich fitting, and the sorption capacity of sorbent for E1 and 17β-E2 was related to the logKow values, indicating that the main mechanism controlling the SEs sorption was hydrophobic interaction. The larger micropore volume of HM and soil was more conducive to the micropore filling of SEs. Meanwhile, the specific sorption of SEs on condensed domain of SOM was the main reason for the strong desorption hysteresis and slow sorption in HM and soil. The SEs degradation rate was positively correlated with the contribution rate of quick adsorption and negatively correlated with the contribution rate of slow adsorption, indicating that the bioavailability of SEs sorbed by hydrophobic interaction was higher than that of micropore filling or specific sorption, which was also the reason for the low bioavailability of SEs in HM and soil. This work confirms the regulation of on-site SOM compositions and their properties on SEs sorption and bioavailability. Characterization of these details is crucial for the improved prediction of long-term risks to groundwater.

Abstract:Propachlor is a widely used acylaniline herbicide for weeding annual gramineous and dicot plants in farmland. As a toxic agricultural chemical, it is overused in crop production and has become one of the most serious environmental pollutants. Yet, understanding the impact of environmental factors on its behavior in farmland soils is critically important for healthy crop production and food safety. In this study, we characterized the effect of dissolved organic matter (DOM) extracted from rice straw on the mobility behavior of propachlor in farmland soil using comprehensive approaches such as the batch equilibrium experiment, soil thin-layer chromatography, soil column leaching, and wheat bioaccumulation with Triton X-100 (TX-100) as a reference surfactant. The application of DOM at 60 and 120 mg DOC L-1 and TX-100 at 96, 192, and 288 mg L-1 reduced the sorption and increased the desorption of propachlor in soil. Freundlich constant K f values (sorption) of propachlor declined with the expansion of DOM and TX-100 concentrations. The addition of DOM and TX-100 increased the mobility of propachlor and the total concentration of propachlor in the leachate of soil columns. The retention factors (R f) were evaluated in the soil thin-layer chromatography as 0.741 and 0.772 (for DOM) and 0.731, 0.763, and 0.791 (for TX-100), all of which were greater than the control (0.710) under the treatment. The application of DOM or TX-100 reduced root growth (biomass) and increased bioaccumulation of propachlor in the roots and shoots of wheat. The outcome of the study can provide important references for the rational use of propachlor and help agronomic management to minimize pesticide contamination in realistic crop production.

Abstract:The effect of glucocorticoid(GC) on peak cytosolic free calcium net increment (Delta[Ca2+](i)) induced by high-K+ was deteced with MiraCal Image System. The main results were as follows: (1) Corticosterone(B) could inhibit Delta[Ca2+](i) in a time-dependent and concentration-dependent manner. (2) The inhibitory effect of B could be mimicked by bovine-serum albumin conjugated corticosterone (B-BSA) also in a dose-dependent manner. (3) G-protein inhibitor, either PTX or GDP beta S significantly reduced the inhibitory effect of B and B-BSA on Delta[Ca2+](i) (4) PMA, a stimulator for protein kinase C(PKC), could inhibit Delta[Ca2+](i). (5) Although the inhibitors of PKC,chelerythrine chloride and bisindolylamide I per se had no influence on Delta[Ca2+](i), but they significantly antagonized the inhibitory effect of B and B-BSA on Delta[Ca2+](i). It is postulated that GC inhibit Delta[Ca2+](i) induced by high-K+ through a membrane mechanism and by a pathway involving G-protein and PKC. (C) 1998 Academic Press.
Evaluation and Application of a Novel Diffusive Gradients in Thin-Films Technique for in Situ Monitoring of Glucocorticoids in Natural Waters

Abstract:The potential environmental risks of glucocorticoids (GCs) have attracted attention in the past few decades. In this study, a novel diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) device and analytical technique based on the second generation of polar enhanced phase (PEP-2), PEP-2-DGT, were developed for sampling and quantifying natural and synthetic GCs in aquatic systems. The capacity of PEP-2 gels for accumulating all target compounds was >600 μg per disc, sufficient for long-term passive sampling of selected GCs, even in wastewaters. Systematic tests were carried out to verify the application of DGT in natural waters and wastewaters. The performance of PEP-2-DGT devices was independent (CDGT/Csoln was in the acceptable range of 0.9-1.1) of a wide range of environmental conditions: ionic strength (0.001-0.5 mol L-1), dissolved organic matter (0-20 mg L-1), and pH (3.06-9.02). It was tested for various diffusive layer thicknesses (0.565-2.065 mm) and different deployment times (10-168 h). Diffusion coefficients (D) of selected GCs through an agarose-based diffusive gel were determined for the first time (3.80-4.85 × 10-6 cm-2 s -1 at 25 °C). Linear correlations between D and log Kow were established for three groups of target GCs (R2 = 0.96-0.99). This could enable prediction of D values for other GCs with similar structures in the future, which will help for rapid screening and emergency monitoring. Concentrations and distribution patterns of analytes obtained by PEP-2-DGT devices in five rivers after 7- and 14-day deployments were in accordance with those measured from grab samples, with total GC concentrations ranging from 7 to 27 ng L-1 at all sampling sites, confirming the reliability and robustness of the DGT devices for monitoring GCs in natural waters. The development of the new DGT technique will help improve understanding of the behavior and fate of these compounds in the aquatic environments.

Abstract:Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are one class of the most urgent emerging contaminants, which have drawn much public and scientific concern due to widespread contamination in aquatic environment. Most studies on the environmental fate and behavior of PPCPs have focused on nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Some other compounds with high concentrations were less mentioned. In this study, sorption and degradation of five selected PPCPs, including bisphenol A (BPA), carbamazepine (CBZ), gemfibrozil (GFB), octylphenol (OP), and triclosan (TCS) have been investigated using three different soils. Sorption isotherms of all tested PPCPs in soils were well described by Freundlich equation. TCS and OP showed moderate to strong sorption, while the sorption of GFB and CBZ in soils was negligible. Degradation of PPCPs in three soils was generally fitted first-order exponential decay model, with half-lives (t1/2) varying from 9.8 to 39.1 days. Sterilization could prolong the t1/2 of PPCPs in soil, indicating that microbial activity played an important role in the degradation of these chemicals in soils. Degradation of PPCPs in soils was also influenced by the soil organic carbon (foc) contents. Results from our data show that sorption to the soils varied among the different PPCPs, and their sorption affinity on soil followed the order of TCS > OP > BPA > GFB > CBZ. The degradation of the selected PPCPs in soil was influenced by the microbial activity and soil type. The poor sorption and relative persistence of CBZ suggest that it may pose a high leaching risk for groundwater contamination when recycled for irrigation.

Abstract:Steroid hormones are highly potent compounds that can disrupt the endocrine systems of aquatic organisms. This study explored the spatiotemporal distribution of 49 steroid hormones in agricultural soils, ditch water, and sediment from suburban areas of Guangzhou City, China. The average concentrations of Σsteroid hormones in the water, soils, and sediment were 97.7 ng/L, 4460 ng/kg, and 9140 ng/kg, respectively. Elevated hormone concentrations were notable in water during the flood season compared to the dry season, whereas an inverse trend was observed in soils and sediment. These observations were attributed to illegal wastewater discharge during the flood season, and sediment partitioning of hormones and manure fertilization during the dry season. Correlation analysis further showed that population, precipitation, and number of slaughtered animals significantly influenced the spatial distribution of steroid hormones across various districts. Moreover, there was substantial mass transfer among the three media, with steroid hormones predominantly distributed in the sediment (60.8 %) and soils (34.4 %). Risk quotients, calculated as the measured concentration and predicted no-effect concentration, exceeded 1 at certain sites for some hormones, indicating high risks. This study reveals that the risk assessment of steroid hormones requires consideration of their spatiotemporal variability and inter-media mass transfer dynamics in agroecosystems.
