Abstract:Smoking is one of the major public health challenges around the world. Traditional tobacco control strategies, which include health education, taxes on tobacco products, and restrictions on smoking in public spaces, have greatly contributed to the reduction of smoking behavior around the world. However,these strategies are not enough to help smokers successfully quit smoking. Recent advances in applied behavioral sciences provide new approaches for nudging smokers to quit smoking, this review reviewed recent empirical research on behavioral intervention strategies to nudge smoking cessation according to practitioners’（e.g., smokers/governments and public health agencies） perspectives and the underlying mechanisms（e.g., cognitively oriented versus environment oriented） of these strategies. This framework makes it easier for governments and smokers to select appropriate behavioral nudge interventions. It also has implications for informing the development of culturally sensitive and adaptive behavioral intervention strategies for promoting smoking cessation in China, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions, and contributing to the achievement of the “Tobacco Control Initiatives” of the “Healthy China 2030 Initiatives”. Although there is progress in developing effective behavioral nudge interventions for smoking cessation, future research is warranted to adopt behavioral change strategies into the development of stop-smoking APPs and test its effectiveness in real world contexts. Future research is also needed to preclude the negative impacts of e-cigarettes and prevent the misuse of these behavior nudge strategies.

Knowledge and attitude of dental students of Navi Mumbai on tobacco cessation counseling: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Due to the increasing awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco, quite a few tobacco users have shown interest in quitting. But, still there is lack of knowledge, lack of tobacco cessation support, and strong cultural habits which influence their inability to quit. Dentists are less likely to provide tobacco cessation advice and counseling and they feel inadequately prepared to provide tobacco cessation education to their patients as compared to physicians and other health professionals. Furthermore, tobacco cessation counseling is not yet a part of routine dental practice and is not incorporated in the dental curriculum. The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge and attitude of dental students of Navi Mumbai on tobacco cessation counseling. Methods: It is a cross-sectional survey-based study. A total of 691 interns and 4th year BDS students were assessed using a structured questionnaire. Results: About 75.3% of the participants claimed that they were not sufficiently trained to provide tobacco cessation counseling. However, 84.2% indicated willingness to counsel their patients regarding the same. About 62.1% felt that the patients do not listen to dental students about quitting and 89.6% of students agreed that counseling patients on tobacco cessation is their duty. Discussion: Dental students lacked confidence in providing counseling to tobacco users due to lack of knowledge on tobacco cessation counseling. However, majority of the participants were also motivated to undertake special training for counseling. The study highlights the importance of introducing tobacco cessation counseling program in the curriculum of dental students to create awareness about the same and to help dental professionals provide effective tobacco cessation counseling.
Delivering smoking cessation interventions in NHS primary dental care - lessons from the ENHANCE-D trial

Abstract:Introduction Smoking is a major contributor to health inequalities in the UK. The ENHANCE-D trial is evaluating three smoking cessation interventions (nicotine replacement therapy [NRT], electronic cigarettes [ECs] or 'very brief advice') delivered in NHS primary dental care. This qualitative study aimed to provide insight into the factors that could influence the adoption of the interventions in these settings.Methods Interviews were conducted at two timepoints. Purposive maximum variation sampling was used to recruit and interview a total of 24 dental patients, 12 dental professionals and three NHS dental commissioners. Thematic analysis was carried out using normalisation process theory as an analytical framework.Results Dental settings were perceived as an appropriate location to deliver smoking cessation interventions. Patients had several motivating and demotivating factors regarding use of NRTs or ECs; they often had negative preconceptions. Financial considerations were major influencers for both patients and dental teams. The time pressures for dental practices were identified as a major barrier. Some practical issues, such as procurement and stock supply, would need to be considered if the ENHANCE-D interventions were to be implemented in routine practice.Conclusion Primary dental care teams are well-placed to deliver smoking cessation interventions. However, a number of facilitators and deterrents have been identified and strategic changes are needed for successful implementation.

Molecular Cloning of a Human Monoclonal Antibody Reactive to Ganglioside GM 3 Antigen on Human Cancers 1

Abstract:In this study we report the characterization of a human monoclonal antibody (HuMab), L612, that reacts with ganglioside GM3 and has thera peutic application for the treatment of human neoplasms, particularly melanoma. A permanent IgM-secreting Epstein-Barr virus-transformed B-cell line L612 was established. L612 HuMab bound specifically to neoplastic cell lines in culture and in tissue biopsy specimens such as mela noma, colon, breast, and lung cancer. The antibody did not bind to normal cells or biopsy tissue. HuMab L612 showed the highest reactivity to mela noma cells, particularly to those with high concentrations of GM3. Immunostaining on high-performance thin-layer chromatography plates demonstrated that L612 HuMab bound to (.\,, purified from melanoma cells. Removal of the sialic acid from GM.<abolished antibody binding. HuMab L612 also reacted to (.,,, purified from egg yolk, indicating that it recognizes an NeuAca2-3 galactose antigen determinant. HuMab L612 heavy and light chains were sequenced and determined to belong to the /.i heavy chain variable subgroup III and K chain variable subgroup IV families, respectively. The studies indicate that the L612 HuMab has significant therapeutic potential for a wide variety of human cancers.
Reversing the tide of COPD: smoking cessation

Abstract:There are a more than a billion adults in the world who smoke (1). Sadly, a third of them will die from a tobacco-related complication. In 2000, approximately 4.8 million smokers died (prematurely) from a tobacco-related illness (2). If current smoking trends persist, smoking will kill over a billion people worldwide in this century (1). The main causes of death from tobacco smoking are predictable. Approximately 20% die from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), another 17% die from lung cancer and a third succumb to cardiovascular diseases (2). Because COPD is an independent risk factor for both lung cancer and cardiovascular disease, it is directly or indirectly responsible for the vast majority of deaths in smokers (3,4). While these data are bleak, the good news is that with smoking cessation (and prevention) many of these premature deaths can be avoided. Friedman and Bloomberg estimate that if worldwide smoking rates decrease by just 5% (from the current 25%), 158 million deaths will be prevented in this century (1). There are other benefits to smoking cessation. A reduction in tobacco consumption in the population will lead to fewer cases of COPD and related complications, such as lung cancer and cardiovascular disease, almost immediately because smoking cessation causes a rapid improvement in lung function. In young people, smoking cessation leads to an 11 ml increase in forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) annually compared with continued smoking (5). For older (40 to 70 years of age) individuals, smoking cessation results in even bigger improvements in FEV1: on average by 47 ml (or 2% of FEV1 as percent predicted) in the first year of smoking abstinence. By contrast, individuals who continue to smoke experience a 49 ml fall in FEV1 (6). Over 5 years, individuals who stop smoking experience a near normal decline in FEV1 (on average about 31 ml per year or 0.27 % predicted per year). However, individuals who continue to smoke experience a rapid loss in FEV1 (on average by 62 ml per year). Individuals who stop smoking but then take up the habit after a year of abstinence experience a 43 ml decrease in FEV1 per year (6). Smoking cessation also reduces the risk of COPD hospitalization by nearly a half (7) and the risk of lung cancer and cardiovascular mortality by over 50% in mild to moderate COPD patients (8). The benefits of smoking cessation are particularly notable in women, who experience larger gains in FEV1 following smoking cessation than do men (9). As discussed, the health benefits of smoking cessation are enormous. Yet, overwhelming evidence suggests that only a minority of health care professionals (and in particular clinicians) consistently offer advice regarding smoking cessation to their patients who smoke (10,11). In the July 2007 issue of The Clinical Respiratory Journal, Thy and colleagues explore the attitude of physicians working at a Norwegian hospital towards smoking cessation counseling to better understand potential barriers in promoting smoking abstinence by clinicians (12). The results are sobering. About a third of the respondents felt that offering advice on smoking cessation was too time-consuming, another third felt that it was not worth the effort, another third felt that it was not their job to offer smoking cessation counseling and about 25% indicated that they lacked sufficient knowledge to accomplish this task. Even when patients wanted to quit smoking, less than 7% of the respondents consistently provided written materials to help them quit. Less than 5% referred them to a smoking cessation class or clinic. These attitudes are shared by clinicians in other parts of the world (13,14). Despite the nihilistic attitude towards smoking cessation by many clinicians, their advice can make a difference, especially in a well-structured multidisciplinary setting. Perception of tobacco hazards on general and periodontal health and tobacco cessation counseling among dental students

Abstract:Introduction: Tobacco use is one of the leading worldwide health risk factors and a primary cause of premature death and disability. Tobacco cessation programs might work well if provided by all healthcare providers. This study aimed to evaluate dental students' knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and practices towards tobacco hazards on general and periodontal health and tobacco cessation councling. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among dental students who were in their clinical years (the fourth, fifth and sixth year of study), in Saudia Arabia in 2022. A self-administered questionnaire derived from the TCC questionnaire survey was carried out among 315 dental students. Knowledge was considered poor if correct answers were below the median value. Attitude was on a five-point Likert scale. Adjusted logistic regression analyses were performed. Results: The study revealed that about 52% have poor knowledge, 64% have negative attitudes, 69% have negative beliefs, and 44% poor practice. All these ratings were below median values. It also showed that younger dental students were 2 times more likely to have poor knowledge (AOR=1.97; 95% CI: 1.1-3.53) and smokers were less likely to have poor knowledge (AOR=0.34; 95% CI: 0.12-0.95). One third of students perceived patient resistance as a barrier to TCC while 50% reported lack of knowledge, 32% lack of time, and 24% lack of materials. Conclusions: The study findings urge the inclusion of programs to encourage dental students to help patients quit tobacco use and to make educational material available to them.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Clinical practice guidelines for treating tobacco use and lung cancer screening guidelines recommend smoking cessation counseling to current smokers by health care professionals. OBJECTIVE:Our objective was to determine the contemporary patterns of current smokers' discussions about smoking with their health care professionals in the USA. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS:We conducted an observational study of 30,132 current smokers (weighted sample 40,126,006) for the years 2011 to 2015 using data from the National Health Interview Survey. MAIN MEASURES:Our main outcome was the proportion of current smokers who had discussions about smoking with their health care professionals. We used the Cochran-Armitage trend test to evaluate the temporal trends in current smokers' discussions about smoking, and used a multivariable logistic model to determine the predictors of discussions about smoking, controlling for smokers' demographics, health status, and receipts of lung cancer screening. KEY RESULTS:Our study found the proportion of current smokers who had discussions about smoking with their health care professionals increased from 51.3% in 2011 to 55.4% in 2015 (P-trend < 0.0001). However, about 15% of current smokers who underwent lung cancer screening did not have or could not recall discussions about smoking with their health care professionals. In multivariable analyses and sensitivity analysis, the predictors of discussions about smoking were being a heavy smoker, receipt of lung cancer screening, being non-Hispanic white, having a physician office visit in the past year, being diagnosed with respiratory conditions, having fair or poor health, and having insurance coverage. CONCLUSIONS:The results demonstrated a steady but slow increase in current smokers' discussions about smoking with their health care professionals in recent years, especially among heavy smokers. More than 40% of current smokers did not have or could not recall any discussions about smoking with their health care professionals.
Barriers to smoking interventions in community healthcare settings: a scoping review

Abstract:Abstract Smoking is one of the major causes of preventable death and is considered the greatest threat to global public health. While the prevalence of smoking has decreased, population growth has led to an increase in the absolute number of smokers. There are many proven smoking cessation interventions available to support smokers in their quit attempts. Most people who smoke, however, underutilize the treatments available to them. This scoping review aimed to identify the current barriers experienced by all stakeholders (smokers, service providers and policymakers) to existing evidence-based smoking cessation interventions in community healthcare settings. Five electronic databases (CINAHL, Ovid MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Scopus and Web of Science) were searched for relevant literature. A total of 40 eligible articles from different countries published between 2015 and 2022 were included in the review and content analysis carried out to identify the key barriers to smoking cessation interventions. Seven key themes were found to be common to all stakeholders: (i) literacy, (ii) competing demands and priorities, (iii) time, (iv) access to product, (v) access to service, (vi) workforce and (vii) motivation/readiness. These themes were mapped to the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behaviour (COM-B) model. This study presents the effect the barriers within these themes have on current smoking cessation services and highlights priorities for future interventions.

Survey of Smoking Status among Patients with Diabetes in Endocrine Clinic

Abstract:Objective To identify smoking status of patients with diabetes,assess their perception of smoking as a risk factor for diabetes,and analyze causes of cessation failure of current smokers,so as to provide evidence for guiding patients on smoking cessation.Methods All the 270 diabetes patients were surveyed according to pre-designed questionnaire by respiratory specialists from July 2010 to September 2010 in outpatient department of endocrinology in the general hospital.Results Of all the 270 diabetes patients,males 67.8 ％,mean age (64.3 ± 10.8) years,smokers accounted for 41.1 ％,including 19.6 ％current smokers and 21.5％ former smokers,29.3％ reported passive smoking. 19.3％ had other concomitant diseases related with smoking.71.7％ of current smokers were aware of the relationship of disease and smoking,43.4％ had attempt to quit smoking.Totally 78.4％ smoking patients obtained advices of smoking cessation from physicians.77.6％ of former smokers had successfully quited smoking because of physicians' cessation messages.79.2％ of current smokers used to get cessation advices from physicians,of those 59.5％ considered these advices helpful.Conclusions There's still considerable proportion of current smokers among patients with diabetes.The study indicates that there is a need for more efforts on smoking cessation among patients with diabetes and the ways and contents of smoking cessation advices from physicians improved.
Smoking cessation in head and neck cancer patients: Factors influencing successes and failures

Abstract:Introduction: This study investigated the smoking behaviours and cessation rates of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients, and their barriers and facilitators to cessation. Method: The study used a mixed methods, sequential explanatory design. The quantitative data were collected at baseline (around time of cancer diagnosis) via a survey prior to commencement of treatment. Participants identified as current smokers at baseline were then followed up to determine their smoking status after treatment and asked to participate in one-on-one, semi-structured interviews. Results: Sixty-four participants with HNC were recruited, with 29 classified as current smokers. The 7-day point prevalence cessation rate for current smokers was 72% at 1-month follow-up, and 67% at 3 months, while continuous smoking cessation was 54% at 1 month, and 42% at 3 months. Participants who continued smoking were found to consume more alcohol (P = 0.032), be in a lower stage of change (pre-contemplation or contemplation stages of the transtheoretical model) at baseline (P = 0.012) and be less confident in being able to cease smoking (P = 0.004). Qualitative analysis revealed 5 key themes associated with smoking cessation: the teachable moment of a cancer diagnosis and treatment, willpower and cessation aids, psychosocial environment, relationship with alcohol and marijuana, and health knowledge and beliefs surrounding smoking and cancer. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the majority of HNC patients achieve smoking cessation, but relapses are common. Cessation programmes should be developed that are comprehensive, sustained and address factors such as alcohol, marijuana and depression.
The Usage of Smoking Cessation Related Behavior Change Techniques by Medical Staff in Smoking Cessation Clinics in China and Its Relationship with the Success Rate of Smoking Cessation

Abstract:Background Smoking cessation related behavior change techniques(BCTs)are defined as interventions that can change smokers'smoking behavior.At present,there are no studies to explore the current status of BCTs usage among outpatient healthcare workers for smoking cessation in China.Objective The current study aims to describe the frequency and perceived effect of medical staff using BCTs in smoking cessation clinics,and to investigate the association between the usage of BCTs by medical staff and successful quitting rate among smokers in smoking cessation clinics.Methods From February 2022 to March 2023,online questionnaire was distributed to medical staff in smoking cessation clinics in China through"WJX"to evaluate the frequency and perceived effect of 44 smoking cessation BCTs used,the success rate of smoking cessation,as well as the demographic characteristics such as age and gender.The hierarchical linear regression model and simple slope analysis were utilized to explore the factors affecting the success rate of quitting in smoking cessation clinics and to examine the interaction between frequency and perceived effect of BCTs used for promoting smoking cessation.Results Two-hundred and eighty-five healthcare professionals who had experience in smoking cessation clinics over one year were included in this study.On average,it is reported that healthcare professionals have used(29±13)smoking cessation related BCTs.The perceived average score for effectiveness of BCTs used was(3.15±0.96).The self-reported average success rate of smoking cessation was(37.0±24.3)%.There were statistically significant differences in the number of BCTs used and the perceived effect of medical staff with different highest education level and whether tracking smoking cessation rate of smokers(P<0.05).There were also statistically significant differences in the smoking cessation rate among medical staff with different years of working in smoking cessation clinics,position in the hospital and whether tracking smoking cessation rate(P<0.05).The hierarchical linear regression showed that after controlling for three variables,including the years of working in the clinics,the position of the clinic staff,and whether tracking smoking cessation rates of smokers,the perceived effect of BCTs used could positively predict the success rate of smoking cessation in the smoking cessation clinic[b(95%CI)=10.070(7.066-13.075),P<0.05].While the number of BCTs used was not a significant factor in the success rate of smoking cessation(P>0.05).When the interaction item of BCTs used×effect perception was further included,the explanatory of the model for the success rate of smoking cessation in the smoking cessation clinic increased by 2.2%,and the perceived effect of BCTs[b(95%CI)=11.711(8.548-14.874),P<0.05],the number of BCTs used×effect perception had a positive predictive effect on the success rate of smoking cessation[b(95%CI)=2.921(0.958-4.884),P<0.05].Conclusion The use of quitting BCTs had a significant impact on the rate of successful smoking cessation in the smoking cessation clinic,and the number of BCTs used and the perceived effect had a significant interaction effect on the success rate of smoking cessation.In the future,it is necessary to improve the training program of smoking cessation practices,and accelerate the transformation and implementation of smoking cessation related BCTs so as to help more smokers to quit smoking successfully.

Abstract:To provide a scoping review of studies on factors affecting smoking cessation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), so as to provide a basis for healthcare professionals to intervene early in the process of cessation of smoking in patients with COPD, and to formulate personalized interventions for smoking cessation. Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review methodology as a framework, searched databases including CNKI, Wanfang Data, VIP, China Biomedical Database, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, ProQuest, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library to collect literature on factors influencing smoking cessation among COPD patients. The literature was screened, data extracted, and summarized accordingly. A total of 28 papers were included. The socio-demographic related factors affecting smoking cessation in patients with COPD were age, educational level, residence, marital status, occupational status, economic status, race, and sex; tobacco related factors included smoking index, smoking duration (years), cumulative smoking (packs/year), smoking intensity (packs/day), and tobacco addiction; disease related factors included mMRC score, GOLD level, severity of airflow restrictions, symptom, activity limitation due to lung problems, history of deterioration in outpatient care, receipt of COPD medication, receipt of lung CT, receipt of pulmonary function tests, receipt of surgery, and comorbid comorbidities; psychologically related factors included mental health status, quit smoking health beliefs, smoking cessation self-efficacy, motivation to quit smoking, stress, and adverse emotions; environmental/Interpersonal network related factors-included environmental impacts, social support, family support, tobacco control policies, and satisfaction with cessation care; and behavior related factors included alcohol consumption, coffee consumption, eating, physical activity, and have a hobby. Healthcare professionals should avoid critical education of COPD patients in the process of smoking cessation management, pay attention to the adverse effects of medication side effects on patients, emphasize the improvement of patients' health beliefs and self-efficacy in smoking cessation, and help patients to establish a correct cognition of smoking cessation.

Chinese and Vietnamese adult male smokers' perspectives regarding facilitators of tobacco cessation behavior

Abstract:Introduction: National surveys show a low prevalence of tobacco cigarette smoking within the Asian American/Pacific Islander population. However, smoking rates loom higher when data is disaggregated by ethnicity and gender. Nevertheless, few data are available on how smokers in this population quit smoking. The aim of this study was to collect first-hand perspectives from adult male Chinese and Vietnamese current and former smokers who were patients at a community clinic in Seattle, Washington, in order to understand the facilitators toward smoking cessation and the methods that they might use to quit smoking. Methods: A telephone survey was administered to age-eligible male Chinese and Vietnamese clinic patients who were current or former smokers. A total of 196 Chinese and 198 Vietnamese (N=394) adult male current and former smokers were contacted from a pool culled from the clinic database. Results: Descriptive analysis using SPSS software revealed ethnicity-specific differences between current and former smokers regarding influences on smoking cessation behavior as well as uptake and endorsement of cessation methods. Family encouragement and physician recommendations were significant facilitators on the cessation process. Will power and self-determination were frequently mentioned by both Vietnamese and Chinese smokers as helpful methods to quit smoking. Vietnamese smokers were more resourceful than Chinese smokers in their use of smoking cessation methods. Conclusion: Even with access to cessation classes at a health clinic, half of current smokers indicated that they had no intention to quit. Such attitudes underscore the need for promotion of effective smoking cessation programs as well as successful strategies for reaching smokers. These conclusions are particularly important for Chinese smokers, who were comparatively less resourceful in their use of smoking cessation methods. Future studies should explore integrating the concept of will power with current mainstream state-of-the-art smoking cessation programs.
Exploring health advice by dental professionals in USA: A secondary data analysis of NHANES (2015–2018)

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To examine socioeconomic and ethnic variations in the provision of health advice by dental professionals.METHODS: Data were from the National Health and Examination Survey (NHANES) (2015-2018). Socioeconomic position (Poverty-income ratio and education) and ethnicity were the main exposures. The outcome variable of interest was whether participants received health advice regarding the "benefits of quitting cigarettes," "benefits of monitoring blood sugar levels," and "importance of oral cancer screening". Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between socioeconomic factors/ethnicity, and health advice after adjusting for covariates.RESULTS: The analysis included a total of 5524 people aged eighteen and above who had complete data. Black and Hispanic individuals had higher odds of receiving advice on smoking (OR = 1.49, 95% CI: 1.04-2.12 and OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.05-2.07, respectively) and glucose monitoring (OR = 3.00, 95% CI: 2.03-4.43 and OR = 3.14, 95% CI: 2.04-4.82, respectively), but no significant difference for cancer screening advice.Higher poverty-income ratios (PIR) were associated with lower odds of receiving smoking advice (OR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.84-0.98), but no significant associations were observed for glucose monitoring or cancer screening advice. The study's findings reveal a social gradient in the provision of cancer advice, with individuals having higher education levels, particularly university education (OR = 1.69, 95% CI: 1.24-2.31), showing significantly higher odds of receiving cancer screening advice CONCLUSION: The study highlights significant variations in health advice provision in dental settings, with education level, ethnicity, and smoking status playing prominent roles, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to promote equity and cultural competence in delivering health advice in dental settings.PRACTICE IMPLICATION: The results emphasize the importance of strong policies and ongoing education for dental professionals to ensure optimal treatment and prevention.

Abstract:Aim To systematically evaluate the effect of smoking cessation training on nursing students' learning outcomes. Design This systematic review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022373280). Methods Ten electronic English and Chinese databases were searched to identify articles on nursing students' smoking cessation training from inception to October 2022. Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument was used to assess the methodological quality of eligible studies. Results Twelve moderate methodological quality studies (three randomized controlled trials and nine quasi-experimental studies) with 2,114 undergraduate nursing students were included. Teaching strategies included didactic lectures, collaborative learning, blended learning and the service-learning approach. Eight studies showed that the training significantly increased nursing students' knowledge of smoking cessation (p < 0.05) and three of them showed a large effect size (Cohen's d: 0.83~1.31). Seven studies showed that training enhanced students' attitudes/motivation towards smoking cessation interventions significantly (p < 0.05) and two of them showed a large effect size (Cohen's d: 1.11~1.84). Nine studies reported that students' self-efficacy improved significantly after training (p < 0.05) and six of them showed a large effect size (Cohen's d: 0.98~2.18). Two one-group pre-post studies showed training significantly improved students' practice of 5 A's behavior (p < 0.05), with a small effect size (Cohen's d < 0.50). Conclusions This review showed that smoking cessation training had a positive and large effect on undergraduate nursing students' knowledge, attitudes/motivation and self-efficacy towards smoking cessation intervention, but the effect of changing the practice of 5 A's was modest. We noted that very few RCTs were done and most studies only used subjective measures. More robust experimental studies with long-term follow-up are warranted in evaluating nursing students' practice/behavior of smoking cessation intervention and patients' quitting outcomes. Blended and collaborative learning are recommended in smoking cessation education.

Abstract:Introduction: Smoking prevalence remains high in China with a low cessation motivation level, despite the government's tobacco control efforts. There is a lack of research specifically examining perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors related to smoking cessation in this region, particularly from a theory-based deductive perspective. Utilizing the COM-B (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behavior) model as a theoretical framework, this study aimed to identify facilitators and barriers to smoking cessation among Chinese smokers. Methods: The study employed semi-structured individual interviews with 40 participants. Each interview spanned approximately 30 minutes. The participants, constituting both current and former smokers, were all aged ≥18 years (n=40). Interview data were then examined using a directed content analysis approach. Results: Analysis revealed three interrelated themes. Capability: Smokers face challenges when resisting peer pressure and dealing with life after quitting. They also lack knowledge about smoking, quitting techniques, and withdrawal symptoms. Opportunity: Changing societal attitudes towards smoking create opportunities for quitting, but these are hindered by inadequate cessation services and a lack of family support. Motivation: Smokers' motivation to quit is mainly driven by health concerns. Resistance to quitting often stems from the belief that smoking is a personal choice or just a habit. Excessive emphasis on willpower may hinder motivation to quit. Conclusions: To enhance smoking cessation efforts in China, three key aspects should be considered: capability, opportunity, and motivation. Publicity and educational campaigns should target common misconceptions about smoking as a personal freedom, correct the overemphasis on willpower, and widely promote available cessation services. A crucial aspect is shifting societal norms to foster anti-smoking sentiments. Effective strategies may involve using real-life stories to illustrate smoking's health consequences, disseminating information about cessation services in maternity centers, enhancing services through mobile health initiatives, and empowering families to support smokers in their quit attempts.

Abstract:Objective This study, conducted by the South Texas Oral Health Network, evaluated dental practitioners' knowledge, attitudes, and practice behaviors regarding cultural forms of smokeless tobacco (SLT) use and effects, using the 5As (Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, and Arrange) framework. Methods Chi-squared tests examined associations between dental practitioners' characteristics, self-confidence, knowledge, attitudes, and practices. The 5As tobacco cessation intervention steps were analyzed using the Wilcoxon rank sum test to measure changes in the frequency of use between successive steps. Results The study finds that higher knowledge scores about SLT forms (chewing tobacco, snuff, dip, paan, betel quid, gutka areca nut) were linked to greater adherence to the Assess and Assist of the 5As cessation intervention steps. However, adherence rates to the 5As declined progressively from Ask to Arrange, representing a gap in SLT cessation practice among active dental practitioners. Dental practitioners were found to be more familiar with conventional SLT forms (e.g., snuff) and less with cultural SLT forms (e.g., paan). Conclusion These findings underscore the need for improved culturally relevant training to enhance practitioner awareness concerning cultural SLT forms and increase progression through the 5As cessation intervention. Practice implications We anticipate that our findings will highlight the critical need for dental practitioners to be aware of diverse cultural forms of SLT and their associated oral and systemic effects to support cessation efforts effectively, primarily due to the growth of culturally diverse communities in the United States and the corresponding rise in the use of previously unrecognized forms of SLT in dental practices. This study is designed to understand the cultural nuances the practitioner needs to develop and communicate the health hazards and importance of cessation of SLT use in the immigrant and refugee populations. Clinical significance This study is significant because it highlights the importance of understanding diverse cultural forms of SLT and cessation practices among dental practitioners. Understanding this will enhance awareness and guide training to improve SLT cessation efforts, improve oral health outcomes, and address disparities in diverse patient populations, particularly amidst increasing immigration trends.
