Abstract:It is of great significance to explore and design low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for the storage and conversion of intermittent renewable resources to clean hydrogen by water splitting. Herein, the amorphous Ni-Fe-S electrocatalysts are rapidly synthesized on Cu sheets and Ni foams using the simple electrodeposition method. After optimizing the S concentration, the Ni-Fe-S electrocatalysts exhibit the simultaneously boosted hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction performances compared to the as-synthesized Ni-Fe and Ni. In addition, the Ni-Fe-S electrocatalysts as the bifunctional electrodes only require a cell voltage of 1.584 V (on Ni foam) and 1.705 V (on Cu sheet) to reach 10 mA/cm2 with excellent stability in the electrocatalytic activity and surface properties. The results exhibit that the enhanced electrocatalytic activity can be attributed to the role of the doped S in formatting the amorphous structure, improving the hydrophilic and aerophobic properties, optimizing the electronic structure as well as enhancing the electrochemically active sites. This work might offer a new insight into the design of the cheap and highly efficient electrodes for generation of hydrogen by water splitting. (c) 2023 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLC. Synergism of Interface and Electronic Effects: Bifunctional N-Doped-Ni3S2/N-Doped-MoS2 Heteronanowires for Efficient Electrocatalytic Overall Water Splitting.

Abstract:The realization of water electrolysis on the basis of highly active, cost-effective electrocatalysts is significant yet challenging for achieving sustainable hydrogen production from water. Herein, N-doped Ni3 S2 /N-doped MoS2 1D hetero-nanowires supported by Ni foam (N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF) are readily synthesized through a chemical transformation strategy by using NiMoO4 nanowire array growth on Ni foam (NiMoO4 /NF) as the starting material. With the in situ generation of Ni3 S2 /MoS2 heterointerfaces within nanowires and the incorporation of N- anions, an extraordinary hydrophilic nature with abundant, well-exposed active sites and optimal reaction dynamics for both oxidation and reduction of water are obtained. Attributed to these properties, as-converted N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF exhibits highly efficient electrocatalytic activities for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions under alkaline conditions. The superior bifunctional properties of N-Ni3 S2 /N-MoS2 /NF enable it to effectively catalyze the overall water-splitting reaction.
A Highly Efficient Fe-doped Ni3S2 Electrocatalyst for Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:The development of efficient and stable electrocatalysts with earth-abundant elements for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in the same electrolyte is incontrovertibly vital in water electrolysis. However, their large-scale fabrication remains a great challenge. Here, we report a self-supported electrocatalyst in the form of Fe-doped Ni3S2 nanoparticles in-situ grown on three-dimensional (3D) conductive Fe−Ni alloy foam (Fe−Ni3S2/AF) by surface-assisted chemical vapor transport (SACVT) method. Homogeneous growth environment and scalability of SACVT method allow Fe−Ni3S2 nanoparticles uniformly growing on AF in large-scale. Fe−Ni3S2/AF exhibits high activity and durability when act as HER catalyst and OER precatalyst in alkaline media. The HER and OER overpotential at 10 mA/cm2 is considerably small, only 75 and 267 mV, respectively. Moreover, the electrolyzer assembled by Fe−Ni3S2/AF for overall water splitting exhibits a low cell voltage and high durability in long-term test. Based on experiments and theoretical calculation, the significantly enhanced activity could be originated from the incorporation of Fe, which contributed to increase the electrochemical active surface area, enhance electrical conductivity, optimize the hydrogen and H2O adsorption energy of Ni3S2 (101) surface in HER, and form active bimetallic Ni−Fe(oxy)hydroxide in OER. The excellent durability of self-supported Fe−Ni3S2/AF could be benefited from the in-situ growth of Fe−Ni3S2 nanoparticles on 3D AF, which could ensure closely mechanical adhesion between active materials and substrate, promote charge transport and increase surface area. This work provides a facile method for large-scale synthesis of electrocatalysts with high activity and long-term durability for efficient water electrolysis in alkaline media.
Interfaces modulation strategy to synthesize bifunctional electrocatalyst for highly efficient overall water splitting

Abstract:The synthesis of high efficient bifunctional non-noble metal electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is crucial for sustainable energy conversion. Here, a free-standing and heterointerfaces-rich fluffy rectangular spongy-like core-shell NiS/CoS/CC-3 bifunctional electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is designed and synthesized by optimizing the thickness of the NiS shell. The electrochemical performance of the NiS/CoS/CC-3 electrocatalyst is investigated in alkaline solutions. Benefiting from the unique rectangular spongy-like structural features, the abundant heterointerfaces between NiS and CoS, as well as the good synergy between its each component, the obtained NiS/CoS/CC-3 catalyst shows outstanding electrocatalytic activities and stability for both HER and OER. The overpotential is 102 mV for HER and 290 mV for OER at 10 mA cm-2, respectively. Moreover, the two-electrode electrolyzer with NiS/CoS/CC-3 as both the cathode and anode catalyst in alkaline solution achieves a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a potential of 1.57 V. Meanwhile, the electrolyzer shows outstanding electrochemistry durability with an unchanged current density for 72 h. The results illustrate that the as-prepared heterointerfaces-rich NiS/CoS/CC-3 electrocatalyst can be used as a high-efficiency catalyst for overall water splitting (OWS). This synthetic strategy is also important for other composite materials in a variety of energy-related application fields.

One-step electrodeposition synthesis of NiFePS on carbon cloth as self-supported electrodes for electrochemical overall water splitting

Abstract:Electrocatalytic water splitting (EWS) for hydrogen production is considered an ideal strategy for utilizing renewable energy, reducing fossil fuel consumption, and addressing environmental pollution issues. Traditional noble metal electrocatalysts have excellent performance, but their cost is high. Developing efficient, stable, and relatively inexpensive dual functional electrocatalysts is crucial for promoting large-scale EWS hydrogen production processes. Herein, a simple one-step electrodeposition method was used to grow nickel-iron phosphorus-sulfides (NiFePS) on the surface of hydrophilic treated carbon cloth (CC). The resultant NiFePS/CC with a phosphorus to sulfur ratio of 1:4 exhibited the best electrocatalytic performance, requiring only -91 mV and 216 mV overpotentials to generate the current densities of 10 mA·cm-2 in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. When it was used as a bifunctional electrocatalyst to overall water splitting (OWS), a voltage of 1.536 V can generate a current density of 10 mA·cm-2. The excellent electrocatalytic performance can be ascribed to two factors: 1) the CC with excellent conductivity serves as a growth substrate, reducing the impedance of charge transfer from the electrode to the electrolyte and accelerating the electron transfer rate; 2) The large number of ultra-thin nanosheets formed on the surface of the catalyst increase the electrochemical specific surface area, expose more reaction sites, and thus improve the electrocatalytic reaction performance. This work provides a new approach for designing efficient non-noble metal electrocatalysts for water splitting.
S-doped Ni(Fe)OOH bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting

Abstract:A larger overpotential being needed to drive overall water splitting, the poor stability of electrode materials and high cost caused by the scarcity of noble metal electrocatalysts are still important factors for restricting electrochemical water splitting. Developing high-activity, low-cost electrocatalysts to enhance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a major challenge for overall water splitting. For this purpose, the S–Ni(Fe)OOH electrocatalyst was synthesized and used to perform HER and OER in 1.0 M KOH solution. The experimental results show that the overpotential of S–Ni(Fe)OOH is 22 mV and 198 mV, and the Tafel slope is 93.21 mV dec −1 and 17.50 mV dec −1 for HER and OER respectively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) also shows that S–Ni(Fe)OOH has smaller R ct value of 2.71 Ω (HER) and 5.492 Ω (OER). The electrochemical active surface areas (ECSA) of S–Ni(Fe)OOH are 55.75 cm 2 (HER) and 85.75 cm 2 (OER), respectively. In addition, cyclic stability and chronoamperometry (i-t) tests prove that S–Ni(Fe)OOH catalyst has good stability with retention rates of 73.83% and 73.73% for HER and OER, respectively. In conclusion, the optimal S–Ni(Fe)OOH electrocatalyst exhibits a superior HER and OER activity, and can be used as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for the overall water splitting.

Abstract:Development of efficient and earth-abundant electrocatalyst for water splitting is necessary and significance. Herein, a Fe-Co-Ni-Sx/NF electrode was synthesized through hydrothermal reaction and calcination method. The Fe-Co-Ni-Sx/NF evenly distribute on the NF substrate under the action of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA). Fe-Co-Ni-Sx/NF electrode has excellent catalytic activity. The overpotential is 209 mV for HER, and 280 mV for OER at current density of 10 mA cm−2. The test result of two-electrode system shows that the cell potential of 1.70 V is required to reach the current density of 10 mA cm−2. The preparation strategy of Fe-Co-Ni-Sx/NF can improve the catalytic activity of transition metal sulfides, which has profound significance to further improve the catalytic activity of the catalyst.

Abstract:Developing non-noble metal catalysts with excellent electrocatalytic performance and stability is of great significance to hydrogen production by water electrolysis, but there are still problems of low activity, complex preparation and high cost. Herein, we fabricated a novel Ni3S2/Ni(OH)2 dual-functional electrocatalyst by a one-step fast electrodeposition on nickel foam (NF). While maintaining the electrocatalytic performance of Ni3S2, the existence of heterostructure and Ni(OH)2 co-catalyst function greatly improves the overall water splitting performance of Ni3S2/Ni(OH)2–NF. Hence, It shows a low overpotential of 66 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for HER and 249 mV at 20 mA cm−2 for OER. The dual-functional electrocatalyst needs only 1.58 V at 20 mA cm−2 when assembled two-electrode electrolytic cell. Impressively, the electrocatalyst also shows outstanding catalytic stability for about 800 h when 20 and 50 mA cm−2 constant current was applied, respectively which demonstrates a potential electrocatalyst for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting provides a prominent route towards clean energy conversion and storage, while unsuitable catalysts restrict its application. Core–shell hierarchical heterostructure materials with strong synergistic effects based on non-noble metal elements have been developed to compensate for inadequacy. In this work, a core–shell hierarchical heterostructure Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst was prepared via hydrothermal and electrodeposition methods. The resultant Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-120 electrocatalyst consists of Co9S8 substrates as the core and NiFe-LDHs as the shell, and exhibits excellent overall water splitting electrocatalytic activity with a low overpotential of 229 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and 151 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and a full cell voltage of 1.62 V at 10 mA cm−2 current density. The core–shell heterostructure constructed by electrodeposition endows the catalyst with outstanding stability and low degradation in long-term catalytic processes as shown by continuous chronopotentiometry tests at current densities of 50, 100 and 200 mA cm−2 for 72 h. The as-prepared core–shell hierarchically heterostructural Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-120 with high-efficiency and good-durability is a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst towards practical applications in overall water splitting.

Abstract:Exploiting highly active, low cost, and stable electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is the central issue for conquering the energy crises and environmental pollution. Herein, an element-incorporation strategy is proposed to synthesize NiFe-based (oxy)hydroxide and selenide nanosheets anchored on a stainless steel mesh (SSM). The (Ni,Fe)OOH/SSM (D-Ni2Fe1/SSM) obtained via sputtering, alloying, and dealloying strategies and (Ni,Fe)Se2 (S–Ni2Fe1/SSM-450) sintering at 450 °C based on the D-Ni2Fe1/SSM exhibit outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities in 1 M KOH, respectively. The preparation of precursor bimetallic hybrid films via sputtering is vital for the subsequent regulation of electronic structures near the active sites between Ni and Fe atoms. D-Ni2Fe1/SSM requires 176 mV to reach 10 mA cm–2 for the HER, whereas 194 mV is needed for S–Ni2Fe1/SSM-450 to reach 10 mA cm–2 for the OER. Additionally, these two electrodes are assembled into an alkaline electrolyzer for overall water splitting with a cell voltage of 1.64 V at 10 mA cm–2 and exhibit outstanding stability. The unique roughened nanosheet morphology, large electrochemical surface area, and optimized electronic structures are responsible for the outstanding HER/OER performances.

Abstract:Exploring highly effective bifunctional electrocatalysts with surface structural advantages and synergistic optimization effects among multimetals is greatly important for overall water splitting. Herein, we successfully synthesized Pt-loaded NiFe-metal-organic framework nanosheet arrays grown on nickel foam (Pt-NiFe-MOF/NF) via a facile hydrothermal-electrodeposition process. Benefiting from large exposed specific surface, optimal electrical conductivity and efficient metal-support interaction endow Pt-NiFe-MOF/NF with highly catalytic performance, exhibiting small overpotential of 261 mV toward oxygen evolution reaction and 125 mV toward hydrogen evolution reaction at a current density of 100 mA cm-2 in alkaline medium. More significantly, the assembled water electrolyzer comprising the Pt-NiFe-MOF/NF//Pt-NiFe-MOF/NF couple demands a low cell voltage of 1.45 V to reach 10 mA cm-2. This work renders a viable approach to design dual-functional electrocatalysts with exceptional electrocatalytic activity and stability at high current density, showing the great prospect of water electrolysis for commercial application.

Abstract:Developing an efficient and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts with superior activity for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is highly required but still challenging. Herein, highly dispersed Ni species containing both Ni nanoparticles (NPs) and atomically dispersed Ni-N X on mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon (Ni-N-C) were prepared by a facile one-pot pyrolysis strategy using dicyandiamide, citric acid and nickel acetylacetonate as raw materials. The confinement agent citric acid is quite requisite for dispersing Ni NPs and forming mesoporous graphene-like carbon substrate. Due to the uniform size of Ni NPs (3 nm) and the synergistic effect between Ni NPs and Ni-N X , and the unique mesoporous carbon structure, such Ni-N-C catalyst exhibits favorable activities for both HER and OER. The overpotentials for HER and OER are only 218 and 330 mV vs. RHE on glassy carbon to deliver a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 , respectively. Moreover, this catalyst also showed good operation durability with no obvious deactivation after long-term (18 h) potentiostatic electrolysis or continuous CV tests. This work could offer a new avenue for the design of bifunctional electrocatalysts in efficient water splitting.

Abstract:Hepatitis B virus is a causative agent of hepatocellular carcinoma, and in the course of tumorigenesis, the X-gene product (HBx) is known to play important roles. Here, we investigated the transforming potential of HBx by conventional focus formation assay in NIH3T3 cells. Cells were cotransfected with the HBx expression plasmid along with other oncogenes including Ha-ras, v-src, v-myc, v-fos, and E1a. Unexpectedly, the introduction of HBx completely abrogated the focus-forming ability of all five tested oncogenes. In addition, the cotransfection of Bcl-2, an apoptosis inhibitor, reversed the HBx-mediated inhibition of focus formation, suggesting that the observed repression of focus formation by HBx is through the induction of apoptosis. Next, to test unequivocally whether HBx induces apoptosis in liver cells, we established stable Chang liver cell lines expressing HBx under the control of a tetracycline-inducible promoter. Induction of HBx in these cells in the presence of 1% calf serum resulted in typical apoptosis phenomena such as DNA fragmentation, nuclear condensation, and fragmentation. Based on these results, we propose that HBx sensitizes liver cells to apoptosis upon hepatitis B virus infection, contributing to the development of hepatitis and the subsequent generation of hepatocellular carcinoma.
Self-supporting Amorphous Nanoporous NiFeCoP Electrocatalyst for Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Abstract:The design of cost-effective and earth-abundant bifunctional electrocatalysts for highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction（OER） and hydrogen evolution reaction（HER） is important for water splitting as an advanced renewable energy transformation system. In this work, the self-supporting amorphous Ni Fe Co P catalyst with nanoporous structure via a facile electrochemical dealloying method is reported.Benefiting from the bicontinuous nanostructure, disordered atomic arrangement, abundant active sites and synergic effect of various transition metals, the as-prepared nanoporous NiFeCoP（np-NiFeCoP） catalyst exhibits good electrocatalytic activity, which achieves the current densities of 10 mA cm -2 at low overpotentials of 244 mV and 105 mV for OER and HER in 1.0 M KOH, respectively. In addition, the bifunctional electrocatalyst also shows outstanding and durable electrocatalytic activity in water splitting with a small voltage of 1.62 V to drive a current density of 10 mA cm -2 in a two-electrode electrolyzer system.The present work would provide a feasible strategy to explore the efficient and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts toward overall water splitting.

Abstract:The development of bifunctional electrocatalysts with high efficiency for overall water splitting is still a challenging task. In this work, we introduce a novel one-step synthesis method for Pt/NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) on an iron-nickel foam (INF) substrate under mild conditions. This method eliminates the need for additional Ni or Fe ions and facilitates in-situ etching and growth processes under mild conditions, resulting in a higher active surface area, well-dispersed low-loading Pt nanoparticles, and a self-supported electrode without binders. These features collectively enhance electron transfer and catalytic activity for both HER and OER. The Pt/NiFe LDH/INF exhibits remarkable water splitting performance, requiring a cell voltage of only 1.44 V at10 mA cm −2 when used as both anode and cathode. Additionally, it remains stable at 20 mA cm −2 for at least 16 h. The exceptional water splitting activity of Pt/NiFe LDH/INF in alkaline solution can be attributed to the synergistic effects of Pt and NiFe LDH, which improve the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction efficiencies. The results provide valuable insights into designing bifunctional electrocatalysts with low Pt loading for optimal water splitting performance at low operating cost.

Abstract:Developing high-performance, eco-friendly bifunctional electrocatalysts is crucial to popularizing water electrolysis for hydrogen production, but it still presents major challenges. Here, we develop a composite material with NiSe 2 -FeSe 2 heterostructure loaded on N-doped carbon layers by utilizing the metal-organic framework as a sacrificial template (NiSe 2 -FeSe 2 /NC). According to microstructural studies, direct contact between NiSe 2 and FeSe 2 induces charge transfer and enhances conductivity, while sensible arraying of NiSe 2 -FeSe 2 /NC nanosheets fully exposes active sites and protects catalysts from violent reaction processes. The NiSe 2 -FeSe 2 /NC heterostructured catalysts show excellent bifunctional catalytic activity for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, with overpotentials of 54 and 232 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. Moreover, NiSe 2 -FeSe 2 /NC also retains superiority in a two-electrode system, needing lower voltage to drive the overall water splitting at 10 mA cm −2 (1.53 V) than Pt/C||RuO 2 as well as long-term stability. This work introduces a novel concept for developing state-of-the-art non-noble metal catalysts for hydrogen production and new insights into interface engineering.

Abstract:Exploring and developing efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is of great importance to alleviate the serious consumption of fossil energy sources. Herein, nano-constructed iron sulfide loaded on N-doped graphene foam (Fe7S8/NGF) was obtained by hydrothermal process and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and used as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for HER (hydrogen evolution reaction) and OER (oxygen evolution reaction). The graphene foam with a three-dimensional porous structure not only improves the overall conductivity of the catalyst but also facilitates the in-situ growth of Fe7S8 nanoparticles and exposes more active sites, thereby optimizing mass and electron transfer. Therefore, the synergistic effect of transition metal sulfide and NGF has greatly enhanced its catalytic performance. In 1 M KOH, Fe7S8/NGF bifunctional electrocatalyst has excellent HER (197.8 mV, 10 mA·cm−2) and OER (450 mV, 100 mA·cm−2) catalytic ability as well as highly stability for long-term operation. Moreover, the Fe7S8/NGF catalyst exhibits excellent ability for overall water splitting, reaching a current density of 100 mA·cm−2, requires an additional applied voltage of 2.21 V only, and maintains good stability during 12 hours of continuous work.

Abstract:Bimetallic sulfides feature low-cost, excellent conductivity, and tunable electronics, exhibiting promising applications in energy storage and conversion. Bimetallic sulfides with sulfur vacancies are synthesized and named NiFeS-NF-x (x means the added volume of H 2 O 2 during the hydrothermal process). NiFeS-NF-150 delivers a low overpotential of 171 mV for OER as well as a low overall water-splitting potential of 1.541 V at 10 mA cm −2 in an alkaline electrolyte. The excellent intrinsic activity of NiFeS-NF-150 can be ascribed to its ideal Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ ratio and moderate e g electron filling of Ni. The optimized electron-spin state of NiFeS-NF-150 balances the adsorption of *O 2 and the hydrogenation of *OH, declining the energy barrier of the rate-determining step and accelerating OER. Moreover, NiFeS-NF-150//NiFeS-NF-150 indicates excellent stability at 10 mA cm −2 operating for 36 h and nearly 100 % Faradaic efficiency. The excellent electrocatalytic properties compared with other reported Ni-based catalysis indicate that this composition is a promising catalyst for water splitting.
