Abstract:Consumer electronics (CE) and electric vehicles (EVs) associated with renewable and sustainable energy have been rapidly changing human lifestyles and transportation habits since 1990s. These active innovations have resulted in a large amount of spent lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) in China. At least two problems are declining the sustainability of production and final disposal of LiBs: one is potential environmental and health risk, and the other is that more and more valuable resources are being stored in spent LiBs without appropriate recycling. We found that a lack of effective regulation, collection systems and recycling technologies are major barriers and challenges to solve the problems. And in order to develop a comprehensive management scheme for this waste stream in China, we proposed a three-pronged approach: (1) new regulation or policy is quite a necessity to deal with the challenges unique to spent LiBs recycling; (2) collection systems for CE and EV batteries can be substantially established based upon past experience of general e-waste management and extended producer responsibility, respectively; and (3) more emphasis needs to be placed on new technology for spent LiBs recycling, to tackle the large quantities of stored spent LiBs. Potential for recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries in China

Abstract:The continual increase in new energy vehicles (NEVs) has created the urgent need to recycle lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to the power battery installed in them. To solve the waste problem spent LIBs has created, identifying their number and utilizing them remain crucial, both as a result of economic and environmental concerns. In the current study, the logistic growth curve was adopted to predict NEV sales beginning 2013 through to 2030 in China. It is predicted NEV sales will reach 1.56 billion by 2030. Based on these figures, spent LIBs and the proportion of valuable metals they encase were estimated using the methods-of-material-flow analysis, the Weibull distribution model, and a sampling investigation. The economic potential for recycling spent LIBs from the extraction of valuable metals was therefore estimated. Results showed that based on the continual increase in NEV sales, 5.56 billion US dollars can be generated from extracting valuable metals from spent LIBs and LIBs2U.The economic potential from the recycling of spent LIBs could significantly fast-track the development of the spent LIB recycling industry in China. This could also alleviate the issue of the environmental degradation that occurs as a result of improper spent LIBs disposal.

Abstract:With the rapid promotion of new energy vehicles, in-use electric vehicle batteries (EVBs) are becoming an important component of urban mining. This paper analyzed the metal stocks in EVBs in China from 2009 to 2019 using a bottom-up method, which focused on the in-use stock of seven main metals, namely, nickel, cobalt, manganese, lithium, copper, aluminum, and iron, in primary use stage and secondary use stage of three EVB types, namely, lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide battery (NMC), lithium iron phosphate battery (LFP), and lithium manganese oxide battery (LMO). It was found that the rapid development of electric vehicles (EVs) contributed to a dramatic increase in in-use metal stocks from 0.7 kt in 2009 to 1.1 Mt in 2019. To assess the increase, three scenarios simulating metal stocks in EVBs from 2020 to 2030 were analyzed, namely, baseline, NMC-dominated, and LFP-dominated, and results indicated that metal stocks will reach 20.6 Mt, 23.2 Mt, and 17.9 Mt, respectively, by 2030. Across the scenarios there is little proportional difference in metal stocks between the two use stages. The proportion of the three EVB types correlates to the development trend of EVB technology under each corresponding scenario. Besides, the in-use metal stocks in EVBs have high implied recycling potential and environmental benefit. The recycling potential of these seven metals is 1.0 Mt in 2019, and it will reach 20.0 Mt, 22.6 Mt, and 17.4 Mt, respectively, in 2030 under the three scenarios. The results reveal the current status and evolution characteristics of metal stocks in EVBs in China, and provide data for material flow analysis and life cycle management of EVBs.

Abstract:With the rise of global warming, people have turned to electricity as a means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have emerged as a popular energy conservation solution. However, as the use of LIBs increases, the recycling industry is facing significant wastemanagement challenges. The decreasing content of precious metals in LIBs has led to a decline in recycling income. This article explores the application of LIBs in new energy vehicles, and evaluates the challenges faced by the recycling industry and provides suggestions for overcoming them. Currently, lithium iron phosphate, lithium nickel cobalt manganese and lithium nickel cobalt aluminum batteries have been used in new energy vehicle power batteries. The main recycle methods include direct recycling, hydrometallurgy, and pyrometallurgy. The article then suggests that improved recycling lines that use artificial intelligence and renew manufacturing standards may be beneficial solutions. By addressing these challenges, the problems associated with LIB recycling may be transformed into opportunities for the future.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the electric vehicle industry in recent years, the use of lithium batteries is growing rapidly. From 2015 to 2040, the production of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles could reach 0.33 to 4 million tons. It is predicted that a total of 21 million end-of-life lithium battery packs will be generated between 2015 and 2040. Spent lithium batteries can cause pollution to the soil and seriously threaten the safety and property of people. They contain valuable metals, such as cobalt and lithium, which are nonrenewable resources, and their recycling and treatment have important economic, strategic, and environmental benefits. Estimations show that the weight of spent electric vehicle lithium-ion batteries will reach 500,000 tons in 2020. Methods for safely and effectively recycling lithium batteries to ensure they provide a boost to economic development have been widely investigated. This paper summarizes the recycling technologies for lithium batteries discussed in recent years, such as pyrometallurgy, acid leaching, solvent extraction, electrochemical methods, chlorination technology, ammoniation technology, and combined recycling, and presents some views on the future research direction of lithium batteries.

Abstract:In China, the high demand for electric vehicles (EVs) has led to a rapid increase in power lithium-ion battery (LIB) production, which has subsequently given rise to an explosive increase in the number of spent power LIBs. Comprehensive recycling, including recovery and reuse, is a promising development direction to obtain the maximum utilization of spent power LIBs. This article aims to review the current situation of the comprehensive recycling of spent LIBs in China. First, the valuable components of LIBs and issues involved in spent power LIBs are summarized to clarify the necessity for spent power LIB recycling. After that, the recycling process of spent power LIBs is discussed in three parts: pretreatment of spent power LIBs, recovery of separated materials, and reuse of spent power LIBs. The recovery of cathode material is fully discussed due to its higher recovery value compared to other components. Several technologies are examined in every step to explore the promising route in terms of environmental protection, technological innovation, and economic feasibility. Estimation of Waste Battery Generation and Analysis of the Waste Battery Recycling System in China

Abstract:China produces and consumes a large amount of batteries annually, which leads to many waste batteries needing to be recycled. The collection and recycling system of primary, alkaline secondary, and lithium‐ion secondary batteries in China is particularly poor, and waste battery recycling enterprises generally sustain economic losses if they solely use waste batteries as raw materials. Increasing the profits of waste battery recycling systems is a key problem that needs to be considered. This article quantitatively analyzes waste battery generation in China by using annual sales data and probable lifetime distribution of various batteries. The results show that the rapid growth of battery usage has led to an increased generation of waste batteries and the percentage of different types of waste batteries is changing over time. In 2013, the total quantity of all waste batteries in the medium lifetime scenario reached 570 kilotons, of which primary, alkaline secondary, and lithium‐ion secondary waste batteries accounted for approximately 36%, 28%, and 35%, respectively. Based on a real‐world case study of a typical domestic waste battery recycling enterprise in China, material flow analysis and cost‐benefit analysis were conducted to study the development of the recycling process of comingled waste batteries. Through scenario analysis, we conclude that increasing the use of waste batteries as raw materials and the recycling of other materials that are less valuable reduces the profits of the waste battery recycling enterprise. Higher profits can be achieved by adding the production of high value‐added downstream products and government support. At the same time, the essential role of the government in developing a waste battery recycling system was identified. Finally, relevant suggestions are made for improvements in both the government and enterprise sectors.

Material flow analysis for end-of-life lithium-ion batteries from battery electric vehicles in the USA and China

Abstract:In the fight for reducing GHG emissions from road transport, electromobility has gained huge attention in recent years. However, the higher adoption of battery electric vehicles in the transportation sector will increase the demand for battery materials, including nickel, lithium, copper, cobalt, and graphite. Therefore, this study estimates the future lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) market in the USA and China and its influences on the materials demand, end of life reaching of LIBs material, and second use based on three different scenarios. For this purpose, a multidimensional scenario analysis was developed for 2012 to 2030 to analyze the material flows from batteries of passenger electric vehicles in China and the USA. The result suggests strong benefits of a circular battery values chain. The results from three scenarios showed that in 2030 there would be around 5–7 kt of recovered Li, 35–60 kt of recovered Ni only in China. Based on the economic evaluation of LIBs in scenario 2, it was found that recovered nickel would have the economic values of 725 million US dollars only in 2030 in China. Through the second use assessment of LIBs in the third scenario, where 50% of used batteries were assumed for second use application, it was found that around 33 GWh batteries would be available for second use only in 2030 in China. Therefore, the larger portion of used LIBs should be utilized for a second life as it could further delay the recycling of LIBs, which can further give time to the government so that the improved and larger recycling infrastructure could be built to tackle a higher amount of coming used LIBs.

Abstract:The rapid development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in emerging markets is pouring huge reserves into, and triggering broad interest in the battery sector, as the popularity of electric vehicles (EVs)is driving the explosive growth of EV LIBs. These mounting demands are posing severe challenges to the supply of raw materials for LIBs and producing an enormous quantity of spent LIBs, bringing difficulties in the areas of resource allocation and environmental protection. This review article presents an overview of the global situation of power LIBs, aiming at different methods to treat spent power LIBs and their associated metals. We provide a critical review of power LIB supply chain, industrial development, waste treatment strategies and recycling, etc. Power LIBs will form the largest proportion of the battery industry in the next decade. The analysis of the sustainable supply of critical metal materials is emphasized, as recycling metal materials can alleviate the tight supply chain of power LIBs. The existing significant recycling practices that have been recognized as economically beneficial can promote metal closed-loop recycling. Scientific thinking needs to innovate sustainable and cost-effective recycling technologies to protect the environment because of the chemicals contained in power LIBs.

Abstract:With the rapid promotion of the number of China’s new energy vehicles in promotion and application, it is of great significance to ensure the recycling of the waste power batteries. It can not only effectively reduce the safety and environmental protection risks brought by the waste power battery, but also alleviate China’s dependence on rare metals such as cobalt and lithium, which has been widely concerned by the industry. In this paper, the cost analysis model of waste power battery treated by hydrometallurgical process is established, and the economy of recycling of ternary material battery and LFP battery is compared and analysed, and the overall economy of the whole power battery recycling industry is analysed, and the relevant conclusions are obtained, and the relevant suggestions of recycling of power battery are put forward according to the analysis results, to provide reference for industry and related management departments.

Abstract:Power lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are core components of electric vehicles (EVs), and the cathode material is the key to the performance of LIBs. Nickel-cobalt-manganese oxide (NCM) cathode formulations have emerged as dominant choices in the battery industry. This work presents a life cycle assessment of recycled NCM ternary cathode materials produced from spent batteries in China. The environmental impacts of virgin and recycled material production were compared based on the ReCiPe 2016 method. The results demonstrated that the highest environmental pressure was generated during the leaching and extraction process due to the high consumption of electricity and auxiliary materials, which contributed nearly half to all three endpoint impact categories. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the environmental impacts of the leaching and extraction process could be effectively reduced by optimizing the production process to reduce the consumption of sulfuric acid, electricity, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium hydroxide. The comparative results indicated that the production of recycled NCM materials consumes 74% less energy, and compared to virgin NCM materials, the three endpoint environmental impact categories are reduced by 72%, 59% and 57%. Comparison of the global warming potential (GWP) between different recycling techniques in the literature indicated that the GWP of hydrometallurgical technology is lower. In addition, we estimated the GWP reduction potential per kg under optimized power scenarios. The annual GWP reduction and energy savings benefits of recycling in China from 2021 to 2035 were predicted. Based on the results, it is necessary to maintain high recycling rates through a variety of initiatives. This Chinese case study demonstrated that the adoption of cathode material production by recycling spent power LIBs through cleaner technology is of great practical significance for resource conservation and sustainable development of the EV industry.

Abstract:Lithium has an increasingly strategic role as clean technologies emerge. This strategic role is especially evident for electric vehicle technology with a critical dependence on lithium-ion battery technology. China is the world's largest lithium consumer due to its rapid economic development, large population, and soaring consumer demand for electric vehicles driven by stricter air quality control regulations. Given this background, this study introduces the first lithium material flow analysis (MFA) for China. This MFA will inform national lithium management plans. The MFA results indicate that China's consumption was 86.7 kt of lithium carbonate equivalent in 2015, accounting for 50% of the global total. China's lithium resource is highly dependent on imports, 70% of spodumene concentrate is imported from Australia alone. Along the material life cycle (value) chain, lithium outflows were primarily from exports of lithium chemicals and lithium-embodied products. Remaining lithium in-use stocks are embodied in electric vehicles, consumer electronics, lubricating greases, and glasses/ceramics. Electric vehicle sales growth projections will likely increase China's dependence on lithium imports, lead to potential lithium supply security concerns for China. Large amount of lithium stock embodied in electric vehicles and other lithium-ion battery-containing products implies more opportunities for lithium recycling in a circular economy context.
Dynamic material flow analysis of critical metals for lithium-ion battery system in China from 2000–2018

Abstract:<p>Lithium and cobalt are key raw materials for the production of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). This study illustrates the evolution of lithium and cobalt metabolism in the LIB system in China by applying dynamic bottom-up material flow analysis. From 2000 to 2018, the consumption of LIBs increased from 1.4 kt (0.2 GWh) to 547.1 kt (102.9 GWh) in China. The cumulative consumption of lithium and cobalt for LIB production was 61.8 kt and 247.6 kt, respectively. From 2000 to 2014, the popularization of mobile phones and laptops promoted the consumption of lithium and cobalt. After 2015, electric automobiles gradually became a major driving force for the growth of lithium and cobalt consumption. The increasing use of LIBs resulted in the growth of in-use stocks of lithium and cobalt from 0.03 kt and 0.2 kt in 2000 to 17.5 kt and 31.0 kt in 2018, respectively. Meanwhile, end-of-life (EOL) LIBs were rapidly generated, with the increase from 0.1 kt/yr to 110.7 kt/yr. In 2018, 0.4 kt of lithium and 3.1 kt of cobalt were recovered from these EOL LIBs in 2018, which provided 4.2% and 12.8% of the lithium and cobalt supplies for new LIBs, respectively. Besides, 1.1 kt of EOL LFP batteries were used in echelon utilization in 2018. Based on the results, some recommendations were proposed for the sustainable development and waste management of LIB industries, including encouraging the innovation of LIB technology and combining multiple technologies, strengthening closed-loop management of LIBs, and promoting echelon utilization of EOL LIBs.</p>

Abstract:Lithium-ion battery (LIB) is significantly changing the landscape of human life. The feasibility of recycling and disposal of spent LIBs was proposed based on the study of their forecasted demand and distribution characteristics in China. The yearly processing capacity of recycling and disposal facilities of spent LIBs on a nationwide scale were estimated to be at least 50 kilotons. The recycling and disposal facilities should be established in the southeastern coast areas of China, which generated high-density spent LIBs. Beijing was chosen as a city case study to discuss the demand forecasting and present one detailed construction planning of spent LIBs recycling. The obtained thoughts and results can contribute to the recycling and disposal facilities of other Chinese megacities.
Investigating the environmental impacts of different direct material recycling and battery remanufacturing technologies on two types of retired lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles in China

Abstract:Recycling lithium-ion batteries from electric vehicles is a meaningful way to alleviate the global resource crisis and supply chain risks. However, the environmental impacts caused by different advanced recycling technologies of batteries have not been extensively discussed. This study conducts a process-based life cycle assessment for three typical direct recycling methods and a hydrometallurgical recycling method for the lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NCM) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. Then, the potential of reducing the environmental burden through battery remanufacturing with recycled materials is investigated. The results show that the environmental burden of direct material recycling of NCM and LFP batteries is reduced by more than 10% and 30% compared with that of hydrometallurgy. Most environmental indicators of NCM are higher than those of LFP during the recycling process due to the difference auxiliary materials and recycled products. If only cathode materials and foils are recycled, the smallest environmental difference between NCM and LFP is only 1.6%. Compared with batteries manufactured with raw materials, the environmental impacts of NCM and LFP batteries remanufactured with recycled materials can be reduced by more than 20% and 32%. Moreover, the more battery materials obtained by the direct material recycling routes, the greater the environmental benefits through battery remanufacturing.

Abstract:Promoting electric vehicle use and development is an effective way to reduce resource consumption and emission pollution toward sustainable development. However, electric vehicle power batteries which cause resource and environmental problems are a serious obstacle to the further development of electric vehicles. China is a major producer and user of electric vehicles, but no specific and extensive resource and environmental assessment system for power batteries has yet been developed. In this paper, lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NCM) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are the most widely used in the Chinese electric vehicle market are investigated, the production, use, and recycling phases of power batteries are specifically analyzed based on life cycle assessment (LCA). Various battery assessment scenarios were set up based on the development of battery recycling in China, and a Monte Carlo analysis was conducted to compare the performance of the two types of batteries under the greenhouse gas emission targets. The results of the LCA study show that LFP batteries have better environmental performance than NCM batteries under overall conditions, but the energy efficiency in the use phase is inferior to NCM batteries, which have greater recycling value. Specifically, the processing of metals in power battery cathode materials is a major cause of resource and environmental problems, and the hydrometallurgical process in battery recycling solutions has better recycling results. In addition, battery recycling can reduce the resource and environmental impact by 5–30%, which is an effective means to reduce resource and environmental problems to achieve sustainable development.

Recovery methods and regulation status of waste lithium-ion batteries in China: A mini review

Abstract:Heavy metals such as Co, Li, Mn, Ni, etc. and organic compounds enrich spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). These batteries seriously threaten human health and the environment. Meanwhile, with the development of new energy vehicles, the shortage of valuable metal resources which are used as raw materials for power batteries is becoming a serious problem. Using proper methods to recycle spent LIBs can both save resources and protect the environment. Pyrometallury is a kind of recycling method that is operated under high temperature with the aim of recovering useful metals after pre-treatment and organic binder removal with the characteristic of high temperature and it is easy to operate. Hydrometallurgy is characterized by high recovery efficiency, low reaction energy consumption, and high reaction rate, and is widely used in the recycling process of spent LIBs. During biometallurgy, valuable metals in the spent LIBs are extracted by microbial metabolism or microbial acid production processes. Since the drive for green and low secondary pollution, biometallurgy as well as solvent extraction and the electrochemical method have earned more attention during recent years. This mini-review analyzes the relationship between the emergence of new energy vehicles and the recycling status of spent LIBs. Meanwhile, this paper also consists of detailed treatment and recycling methods for LIBs and provides a summary of the management regulations of current waste for LIBs. What is more, the main challenges and further prospects in terms of LIBs management in China are analyzed.

Abstract:Lithium-ion battery (LIB) is the key technology for climate change mitigation. The sustainability of LIB supply chain has caused widespread concern since the material utilization efficiency of LIB supply chain has not been well investigated. This study aims to fill this research gap by conducting a dynamic material flow analysis of lithium in China from 2015 to 2021. Results indicate that within the temporal boundary, lithium flow and in-use stock grew significantly in China due to the rapid development of the EV market, with lithium flow in domestic production of basic chemicals increasing by 614% to 100 kt, end-use consumption increasing by 160% to 35 kt, and in-use stock increasing by 62% to 195 kt. China has been a net importer of lithium, of which cumulative imports and exports were 343 kt and 169 kt, respectively. In addition, 103 kt of lithium was converted to inventories or was lost during the processing from 2015 to 2021. By optimizing inventory and processing, developing substitutes for lithium for non-battery applications, and improving lithium recycling, China's net import dependency of lithium could be reduced from 27%-86% to 0%-16%. Our study demonstrates that it is urgent to improve material utilization efficiency so that the lithium resource supply can be secured.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the electric vehicle industry in China, the number of spent power batteries has increased. Recycling of spent power batteries is necessary not only to eliminate the environment pollution, but also to reduce the resources usage. However, whether it is necessary for the government to take economic incentives in the recycling process has not been clearly analyzed. Combined the existing literatures and the market investigation, this paper estimates the economic profits of recycling spent power batteries, in terms of LiFePO4 (LFP) battery and Li(NiCoMn)O2 (NCM) battery. The results show that the recycling process is profitable, therefore, we suggest the government should not implement additional economic incentives, like subsides or tax reduction, but focus on the establishment of compulsory recycling mechanism and the market permission system.
