Abstract:Aging in place is not without its challenges, with physical, psychological, social, and economic burdens on caregivers and seniors. To address these challenges and promote active aging, technological advancements offer a range of digital tools, applications, and devices, enabling community dwelling older adults to live independently and safely. Despite these opportunities, the acceptance of technology among the older adults remains low, often due to a mismatch between technology development and the actual needs and goals of seniors. The aim of this review is to identify recent technological solutions that monitor the health and well-being of aging adults, particularly within the context of instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). A scoping review identified 52 studies that meet specific inclusion criteria. The outcomes were classified based on social connectedness, autonomy, mental health, physical health, and safety. Our review revealed that a predominant majority (82%) of the studies were observational in design and primarily focused on health-related IADLs (59%) and communication-related IADLs (31%). Additionally, the study highlighted the crucial role of involving older adults in study design processes, with only 8 out of the 52 studies incorporating this approach. Our review also established the interview method as the most favoured technology evaluation tool for older adults' studies. The metrics of 'usability' and 'acceptance' emerged as the most frequently employed measures for technology assessment. This study contributes to the existing literature by shedding light on the implications of technological solutions for community dwelling older adults, emphasizing the types of technologies employed and their evaluation results.

The introduction and utilization of these technologies, however, bring about challenges in acceptability, durability, ease of use, communication, and power requirements. Furthermore, it needs to be pointed out that these technological solutions should be based on open standards.

Abstract:Abstract Background In recent years, healthcare systems have progressively adopted several technologies enhancing access to healthcare for older adults and support the delivery of efficient and effective care for this specific population. These technologies include both assistive technologies designed to maintain or improve the independence, social participation and functionality of older people at home, as well as health information technology developed to manage long-term conditions. Examples of such technologies include telehealth, wearable devices and mobile health. However, despite the great promise that health technology holds for promoting independent living among older people, its actual implementation remains challenging. Methods This study aimed to conduct an integrative systematic review of the research evidence on the factors that facilitate or hinder the adoption of different types of technology by older individuals with chronic diseases. For this purpose, four electronic databases (PsycArticles, Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed) were queried to search for indexed published studies. The methodological quality of the selected papers has been assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Results Twenty-nine articles were selected, including 6.213 adults aged 60 or older. The studies have been synthesised considering the types of technological interventions and chronic diseases, as well as the main barriers and facilitators in technology acceptance. The results revealed that the majority of the selected articles focused on comorbid conditions and the utilisation of telemedicine tools. With regard to hindering and facilitating factors, five main domains were identified: demographic and socioeconomic, health-related, dispositional, technology-related and social factors. Conclusion The study results have practical implications not only for technology developers but also for all the social actors involved in the design and implementation of healthcare technologies, including formal and informal caregivers and policy stakeholders. These actors could use this work to enhance their understanding of the utilisation of technology by the ageing population. This review emphasises the factors that facilitate technology adoption and identifies barriers that impede it, with the ultimate goal of promoting health and independent living.

Community Dentistry And Oral Epidemiology

Abstract:This study reports the first ever national oral health survey of Omani 12-year-olds. Conducted in October 1993, of the 3,435 children examined, 1,438 (41.9%) were caries-free, although regional variations ranged from 24.8% to 61.9%. Overall, the national DMFT averaged 1.53, the majority of caries experienced being in the form of untreated decay, with occlusal surfaces of first permanent molars being the most commonly involved site. Oral hygiene was poor, only 11% of those examined being scored as plaque-free.
Estrogen Alters MPTP‐Induced Neurotoxicity in Female Mice: Effects on Striatal Dopamine Concentrations and Release

Abstract:Abstract: The effects of estrogen on MPTP‐induced neurotoxicity of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system were examined in C57Bl and CD‐1 mice. Ovariectomized mice with and without estrogen were treated with MPTP or its vehicle. The effects of these treatments on striatal dopamine concentrations and l‐DOPA‐stimulated dopamine and l‐3,4‐dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) release in vitro were determined. Dopamine concentrations of C57Bl mice receiving estrogen before MPTP were significantly greater than those of non‐estrogen‐treated MPTP mice as well as estrogen‐treated mice receiving the MPTP vehicle. Dopamine concentrations of the CD‐1 mice did not differ with these treatments. l‐DOPA‐evoked dopamine release values of estrogen‐treated C57Bl mice were significantly increased compared with non‐estrogen‐treated mice. No such differences were observed in the MPTP‐treated C57Bl mice. DOPAC release rates were similar to that of dopamine in these C57Bl mice. In the CD‐1 mice estrogen also produced a significant increase in l‐DOPA‐evoked dopamine release; however, this response was unaltered by MPTP treatment. A significant increase in l‐DOPA‐evoked DOPAC output was obtained only for estrogen‐treated CD‐1 mice. Both strains show very similar responses to the estrogen treatment, but differential responses of dopamine release to l‐DOPA between the C57Bl and CD‐1 mice were obtained with regard to the interactive effects of estrogen and MPTP. Our results suggest that in addition to its role as modulator, estrogen may also function as a neuroprotectant against MPTP neurotoxicity of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system in the C57Bl mouse.

Abstract:Objective: Paucity of information concerning the efficacy of gerontechnologies to support aging in place among community-dwelling older adults prevents potential users, healthcare professionals, and policymakers from making informed decisions on their use. The goal of this study was to identify gerontechnologies tested for home support in dyads of community-dwelling older adults with unimpaired cognition and their family caregivers, including their benefits and challenges. We also provide the level of evidence of the studies and recommendations to address the specific challenges preventing their use, dissemination, and implementation. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the literature published between 2016 and 2021 on gerontechnologies tested for home support in dyads. Two independent reviewers screened the abstracts according to the inclusion/exclusion criteria. A third reviewer resolved eligibility discrepancies. Data extraction was conducted by two independent reviewers. Results: Of 1,441 articles screened, only 13 studies met the inclusion criteria with studies of moderate quality. Mostly, these gerontechnologies were used to monitor the older adult or the environment, to increase communication with family caregivers, to assist in daily living activities, and to provide health information. Benefits included facilitating communication, increasing safety, and reducing stress. Common challenges included difficulties using the technologies, technical problems, privacy issues, increased stress and dissatisfaction, and a mismatch between values and needs. Conclusion: Only a few gerontechnologies have proven efficacy in supporting community-dwelling older adults and their family caregivers. The inclusion of values and preferences, co-creation with end users, designing easy-to-use technologies, and assuring training are strongly recommended to increase acceptability and dissemination. Abstract:Background The increase in life expectancy and recent advancements in technology and medical science have changed the way we deliver health services to the aging societies. Evidence suggests that home telemonitoring can significantly decrease the number of readmissions, and continuous monitoring of older adults’ daily activities and health-related issues might prevent medical emergencies. Objective The primary objective of this review was to identify advances in assistive technology devices for seniors and aging-in-place technology and to determine the level of evidence for research on remote patient monitoring, smart homes, telecare, and artificially intelligent monitoring systems. Methods A literature review was conducted using Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature Plus, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Xplore, ProQuest Central, Scopus, and Science Direct. Publications related to older people’s care, independent living, and novel assistive technologies were included in the study. Results A total of 91 publications met the inclusion criteria. In total, four themes emerged from the data: technology acceptance and readiness, novel patient monitoring and smart home technologies, intelligent algorithm and software engineering, and robotics technologies. The results revealed that most studies had poor reference standards without an explicit critical appraisal. Conclusions The use of ubiquitous in-home monitoring and smart technologies for aged people’s care will increase their independence and the health care services available to them as well as improve frail elderly people’s health care outcomes. This review identified four different themes that require different conceptual approaches to solution development. Although the engineering teams were focused on prototype and algorithm development, the medical science teams were concentrated on outcome research. We also identified the need to develop custom technology solutions for different aging societies. The convergence of medicine and informatics could lead to the development of new interdisciplinary research models and new assistive products for the care of older adults.

Abstract:Aim To systematically review the potential of smart home technology to enhance the independence of older adults and reduce their dependence on care. Additionally, it sought to examine the positive impacts of such technology on their golden years. Design A systematic review based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA). Data Sources The search was conducted on 8 April 2024. Peer‐reviewed studies in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, Scopus, The Cochrane Library, CINAHL, CNKI, WANFANG DATA and VIP from 1 January 2000 to 8 April 2024 were searched. Methods The methodological quality assessment used the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Positive findings relevant to this study were extracted from the literature and analysed using thematic synthesis. Results After meticulously examining 3404 studies, we identified 21 relevant sources for in‐depth analysis, including qualitative studies (n = 10), experimental studies (n = 9) and mixed method studies (n = 2). These sources were grouped into five core themes based on the pivotal role of smart home technologies in enabling ageing in place: daily monitoring, assisted living activities, life reminders, functional improvement and emotional companionship. The study found that smart home technology offers numerous benefits to the lives of older adults, including increased independence, psychological support, improved cognitive functioning, enhanced self‐management, increased mobility, support for caregivers, promoted social engagement and enhanced quality of life. Conclusion Smart home technology can enhance the independence of older adults' lives, reduce their dependence on care, alleviate the burden on caregivers and promote home‐based elderly care. Impact This systematic review contributes to understanding the capability of smart home technology to promote elderly care at home and help better utilise smart home technology to benefit older adults. Abstract:In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the significant challenges posed by Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and the need for innovative solutions to improve the quality of life for affected individuals. As AD prevalence continues to rise, technological advancements offer promising opportunities to address the multifaceted needs of patients and caregivers. This survey paper thoroughly investigates technological innovations in AD care, offering valuable insights into cutting-edge approaches that have the potential to positively impact the lives of affected individuals. By providing a holistic view of available assistive solutions, we review 2459 papers and selected 46 relevant studies published between 2015 and 2023, specifically focusing on healthcare technologies and solutions, utilizing sensing methods. The former will include Telemedicine, E-health, Smart Environment, Internet of Things (IoT), Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), and Personalized Assistive Solutions (PAS), while the latter encompasses Wearable/Environmental, Radio/Audio, Video/Image, and Digital Platforms. Our comparative assessment of recent survey papers reveals the unique contribution of this study, as it comprehensively examines the intersection of multiple parameters. By summarizing insights from these studies, we identify gaps and recommend future directions for advancements in AD care.

Abstract:Background: As the global population ages, we witness a broad scientific and technological revolution tailored to meet the health challenges of older adults. Over the past 25 years, technological innovations, ranging from advanced medical devices to user-friendly mobile applications, are transforming the way we address these challenges, offering new avenues to enhance the quality of life and well-being of the aging demographic. Objective: To systematically review the development trends in technology for managing and caring for elderly health over the past 25 years, and to project future development prospects. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of literatures related to Tech-based solutions for health challenges in aging, published up to March 18, 2024. The search was performed using the Web of Science Core Collection, covering a span from 1999 to 2024. Our search strategy was designed to capture a broad spectrum of terms associated with aging, health challenges specific to the elderly, and technological interventions. Results: A total of 1,133 publications were found in WoSCC. The publication trend over these 25 years showed a gradual but fluctuating increase. The United States was the most productive country, and participated in international collaboration most frequently. The predominant keywords identified through this analysis include "dementia", "telemedicine", "older-adults", "telehealth", "care". The Keywords with citation bursts from "telemedicine" to "digital health". Conclusions: The scientific and technological revolution has significantly improved elderly health management, particularly in chronic disease monitoring, mobility, and social connectivity. The momentum for innovation continues to build, with future research likely to focus on predictive analytics and personalized healthcare solutions, further enhancing elderly independence and quality of life.

Abstract:Background: The integration of smart technologies, including wearables and voice-activated devices, is increasingly recognized for enhancing the independence and well-being of older adults. However, the long-term dynamics of their use and the coadaptation process with older adults remain poorly understood. This scoping review explores how interactions between older adults and smart technologies evolve over time to improve both user experience and technology utility. Objective: This review synthesizes existing research on the coadaptation between older adults and smart technologies, focusing on longitudinal changes in use patterns, the effectiveness of technological adaptations, and the implications for future technology development and deployment to improve user experiences. Methods: Following the Joanna Briggs Institute Reviewer's Manual and PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews) guidelines, this scoping review examined peer-reviewed papers from databases including Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, PEDro, Ovid PsycINFO, and EBSCO CINAHL from the year 2000 to August 28, 2023, and included forward and backward searches. The search was updated on March 1, 2024. Empirical studies were included if they involved (1) individuals aged 55 years or older living independently and (2) focused on interactions and adaptations between older adults and wearables and voice-activated virtual assistants in interventions for a minimum period of 8 weeks. Data extraction was informed by the selection and optimization with compensation framework and the sex- and gender-based analysis plus theoretical framework and used a directed content analysis approach. Results: The search yielded 16,143 papers. Following title and abstract screening and a full-text review, 5 papers met the inclusion criteria. Study populations were mostly female participants and aged 73-83 years from the United States and engaged with voice-activated virtual assistants accessed through smart speakers and wearables. Users frequently used simple commands related to music and weather, integrating devices into daily routines. However, communication barriers often led to frustration due to devices' inability to recognize cues or provide personalized responses. The findings suggest that while older adults can integrate smart technologies into their lives, a lack of customization and user-friendly interfaces hinder long-term adoption and satisfaction. The studies highlight the need for technology to be further developed so they can better meet this demographic's evolving needs and call for research addressing small sample sizes and limited diversity. Conclusions: Our findings highlight a critical need for continued research into the dynamic and reciprocal relationship between smart technologies and older adults over time. Future studies should focus on more diverse populations and extend monitoring periods to provide deeper insights into the coadaptation process. Insights gained from this review are vital for informing the development of more intuitive, user-centric smart technology solutions to better support the aging population in maintaining independence and enhancing their quality of life. Abstract:Cognitive decline is becoming more prevalent as population ages. Technology offers solutions to help people with cognitive decline age in place. A compassionate approach to care can promote engagement in technology use by older adults with cognitive decline and equitable access. This scoping review summarized research literature on approaches to design and selection of technology that could support a compassionate approach to technology use for daily functioning among adults with cognitive decline and their care partners. We used the framework of Arksey and O'Malley. Key words capturing constructs of compassion, technology, and cognitive decline were searched in CINAHL, Medline, and PsycINFO. Peer-reviewed articles about the design for or use of technology by persons with cognitive decline or their care partners were included. Two reviewers screened and extracted data. Data informing compassionate technology use were analysed thematically. Fifty-five included articles represented a variety of technologies and purposes with ethics being the predominant perspective ( n = 15). Analysis identified four categories: 1) Person- and care partner-centered approach, 2) Tailoring design to abilities, 3) Tailoring selection and application, and 4) Training and support. Using study findings, we developed a framework for compassionate use of technology for people living with cognitive decline and their care partners.

Methods: Data from 4 sources were used: semistructured in-person or internet-based interviews with professional caregivers (n=12), structured email interviews with experts in the area of aging (n=9), a web-based survey of older adults (>55 years) attending the Virtual University of the Third Age (n=369), and a case study on the adoption of new technology by an older adult care facility. Results: Although all stakeholders noted the potential of SMART technologies to improve older adult care, multiple barriers to their adoption were identified. Caregivers perceived older adults as disinterested or incompetent in using technology, reported preferring known strategies over new technologies, and noted own fears of using technology. Experts viewed technologies as essential but expressed concerns about cost, low digital competency of older adults, and lack of support or willingness to implement technologies in older adult care. Older adults reported few concerns overall, but among the mentioned concerns were lack of ability or interest, misuse of data, and limited usefulness (in specific subgroups or situations). In addition, older adults' ratings of the usefulness of different technologies correlated with their self-rating of digital competency ( r =0.258; P <.001). Conclusions: Older adults appeared to have more positive views of various technologies than professional caregivers; however, their concerns varied by the type of technology. Lack of competence and lack of support were among the common themes, suggesting that educationally oriented programs for both older adults and their caregivers should be pursued.

Abstract:Background: It is a contemporary and global challenge that the increasing number of older people requiring care will surpass the available caregivers. Solutions are needed to help older people maintain their health, prevent disability, and delay or avoid dependency on others. Technology can enable older people to age in place while maintaining their dignity and quality of life. Literature reviews on this topic have become important tools for researchers, practitioners, policy makers, and decision makers who need to navigate and access the extensive available evidence. Due to the large number and diversity of existing reviews, there is a need for a review of reviews that provides an overview of the range and characteristics of the evidence on technology for aging in place. Objective: This study aimed to explore the characteristics and the range of evidence on technologies for aging in place by conducting a scoping review of reviews and presenting an evidence map that researchers, policy makers, and practitioners may use to identify gaps and reviews of interest. Methods: The review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews). Literature searches were conducted in Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus using a search string that consisted of the terms "older people" and "technology for ageing in place," with alternate terms using Boolean operators and truncation, adapted to the rules for each database. Results: A total of 5447 studies were screened, with 344 studies included after full-text screening. The number of reviews on this topic has increased dramatically over time, and the literature is scattered across a variety of journals. Vocabularies and approaches used to describe technology, populations, and problems are highly heterogeneous. We have identified 3 principal ways that reviews have dealt with populations, 5 strategies that the reviews draw on to conceptualize technology, and 4 principal types of problems that they have dealt with. These may be understood as methods that can inform future reviews on this topic. The relationships among populations, technologies, and problems studied in the reviews are presented in an evidence map that includes pertinent gaps. Conclusions: Redundancies and unexploited synergies between bodies of evidence on technology for aging in place are highly likely. These results can be used to decrease this risk if they are used to inform the design of future reviews on this topic. There is a need for an examination of the current state of the art in knowledge on technology for aging in place in low- and middle-income countries, especially in Africa.
[Instrument to collect nursing data in General Intensive Care Unit].

Abstract:The study aimed to build an instrument to collect nursing data for patients in a General ICU, based in Horta. Action research developed in three phases: identification of the empirical indicators in hospitalized adults in a General ICU; validation of the indicators and formatting of the preliminary instrument; apparent and content validation with a posterior arrangement of the instrument final version. A number of 545 empirical indicators were identified, remaining 179 with IC > 0.80, being the final version of the instrument structured in four main areas: Identification, Interview, Physical Examination, Nurse Impressions and Intercurrences. It is believed that this instrument will identify situations of health and disease and nursing care needs; will promote a more effective interpersonal relationship among nurses, clients and families; will disclose the imperative of the systematization of nursing care on quality of care, as well as raise new researches working with Nursing own tools.
Requirements Engineering for Older Adult Digital Health Software: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract:Growth of the older adult population has led to an increasing interest in technology-supported aged care. However, the area has some challenges such as a lack of caregivers and limitations in understanding the emotional, social, physical, and mental well-being needs of seniors. Furthermore, there is a gap in the understanding between developers and ageing people of their requirements. Digital health can be important in supporting older adults wellbeing, emotional requirements, and social needs. Requirements Engineering (RE) is a major software engineering field, which can help to identify, elicit and prioritize the requirements of stakeholders and ensure that the systems meet standards for performance, reliability, and usability. We carried out a systematic review of the literature on RE for older adult digital health software. This was necessary to show the representatives of the current stage of understanding the needs of older adults in aged care digital health. Using established guidelines outlined by the Kitchenham method, the PRISMA and the PICO guideline, we developed a protocol, followed by the systematic exploration of eight databases. This resulted in 69 primary studies of high relevance, which were subsequently subjected to data extraction, synthesis, and reporting. We highlight key RE processes in digital health software for ageing people. It explored the utilization of technology for older user well-being and care, and the evaluations of such solutions. The review also identified key limitations found in existing primary studies that inspire future research opportunities. The results indicate that requirement gathering and understanding have a significant variation between different studies. The differences are in the quality, depth, and techniques adopted for requirement gathering and these differences are largely due to uneven adoption of RE methods.
