Abstract:Phosphate (P) is an irreplaceable resource for the growth of all living organisms, and the impending exhaustion of minable P rock arouses the demand of P recovery, which further promotes the novel technologies development. To reclaim the P from wastewater or sludge conveniently and efficiently, a novel magnetic adsorbent with La-Zr bimetallic modification (La-Zr@Fe3O4) possessing a high affinity to phosphate and rapid separation was proposed in this study. Adsorption tests showed that the adsorption capacity of P on La-Zr@Fe3O4 increased with La content, reaching the maximum value of 49.3 mg/g at pH 3 by L1Z2. Whereas, the addition of La resulted in the decline of desorption efficiency from -85% to -60% in the pH range from 3 to 6, except pH 2. The kinetics of P adsorption on the La-Zr@Fe3O4 was described well by the pseudo-second-order model, while the isotherm of P adsorption was fitted well by the Freundlich model. Besides, the adsorbent exhibited high selectivity towards P over other coexisting ions (Cl- , NO3? , SO4 2?, Mg2+, and Ca2+). The feasibility of P recovery from the solid phase was investigated and confirmed by P recovery from fish farm sludge. The 90% removal efficiency of P and 88% desorption efficiency in cyclic adsorption/desorption experiments evidenced the stability and reusability of La-Zr magnetic adsorbent. The analysis of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed the replacement of OH? with phosphate via the ligand exchange was the adsorption mechanism. This work demonstrated that the highly efficient, rapidly separable, and repeatable LaZr@Fe3O4 has the potential for phosphate sequestration and recovery.
Efficient recovery of phosphate by La-MOFs: An excellent adsorption performance and mechanism

Abstract:Lanthanum-type metal-organic frameworks (La-MOFs) can be used to mitigate phosphate pollution in wastewater. Herein, La-MOFs was gained via the solvothermal method and its phosphate removal property was examined under various conditions, like variable initial phosphate concentration, solution pH, and co-existing ions. The material morphology, element composition, and crystal morphology of the La-MOFs was characterized using XRD, SEM, FTIR , and XPS . The phosphate removal mechanism was investigated by combining thermodynamic and kinetic analyses. The La-MOFs exhibited superior adsorption capability for surplus phosphate in water, and also had a high selectivity for phosphate in the complexed environment with some co-existing ions. Maximum adsorption was obtained at pH 4. The sorption procedure of La-MOFs aligned more with the Langmuir and pseudo-second order kinetic models, demonstrating monomolecular-layer-controlled chemisorption. And the maximum sorption capacity was 73.69 mg g −1 . Electrostatic interactions and ligand exchange, which enabled the development of an La–O–P inner-sphere complexation, were identified as the primary mechanisms of phosphate removal. This research provides insights into the optimal conditions and mechanism of phosphate adsorption by La-MOFs.

Advanced removal of phosphate from water by a novel lanthanum manganese oxide: Performance and mechanism

Abstract:A novel lanthanum manganese oxide (La0.96Mn0.96O3, LMO) was synthesized for advanced phosphate removal to alleviate water eutrophication process. The adsorbent had a specific surface area of 18.51 m2/g with pH at point of zero charge of 6.6; exhibited excellent phosphate adsorption capacity of 168.4 mg/g; performed well in a wide pH range from 3 to 10. The phosphate removal was not interfered by coexisting ions. The adsorbent remained 94.8% of its initial adsorption efficiency after reused for four times. Phosphate adsorption process conformed to pseudo-second-order model (R2=0.992) and Langmuir model (R2=0.935). Ligand exchange and electrostatic interaction played important roles in phosphate removal. In addition, the actual sewage secondary effluent was used to further verify the phosphate removal performance of LMO. For practical water treatment, the LMO showed high phosphate removal efficiency of 83.4% and low residual P of 0.1 mg/L. LMO is a potential candidate for low-concentration phosphate removal in real water environment.

Abstract:Excessive phosphate can lead to eutrophication and cause many ecological crises, which need to be effectively removed. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) showed great effect on removing pollutants due to their special physicochemical features. In this study, La, Al and fumaric acid, as elements with higher affinity to phosphate and one environmentally friendly linker, respectively, were used to explore the environmentally friendly MOFs with high phosphate removal efficiency. Five F-Al/La MOFs with different mole ratio of Al and La ions were synthesized and characterized. F-Al and F-La has uniformly ordered particle structure and a sheet-like structure, respectively. According to the result of this study, the adsorption capacity of F-Al/La MOFs for phosphate was continuously enhanced by increasing La content. F-La exhibited the highest phosphate capture capacity of 101.80 mg P/g, which was almost twice of F-Al (53.11 mg P/g). Compared to F-Al, F-La showed good phosphate removal efficiency in a relatively wide pH range and natural water. In the further investigation, it indicated that the potential phosphate adsorption mechanisms employed by F-La mainly involved inner-sphere surface complexation and surface precipitation, while F-Al underwent more electrostatic interaction than F-La. This work developed one environmentally friendly F-La MOF material for phosphate removing from eutrophication water.

Abstract:The limited metal sites of monometallic MOFs and the high influence of pH limit their adsorption capacity. To solve these problems, La/Al bimetallic MOFs/chitosan composite was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and impregnation methods and then characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, BET and XPS techniques. The doping of La has no obvious effect on the structure of Al-MOFs, but chitosan has greatly changed the structure of La/Al bimetallic MOFs. The phosphate adsorption of the composite was affected by La/Al molar ratio, chitosan/bimetallic MOFs mass ratio, temperature, phosphate initial concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH, and coexisting ions. The optimum molar ratio of La/Al and mass ratio of chitosan/bimetallic MOFs are 0.5:1 and 5.0%, respectively. The addition of La and chitosan can provide additional adsorption active sites, inhibit metal leaching, and enhance the phosphate adsorption performance, stability, and acid-alkali resistance of the composite. Its maximum adsorption capacity was 264.48 mg·g -1 . Its phosphate removal efficiency is above 90% at pH=3.0-9.0. The actual phosphorus-containing wastewater with 7.064 mg·L -1 PO 4 3- and initial pH 7.4 can be treated to meet Chinese first-class effluent quality standard. La, Al, amino groups, and hydroxyl groups play an important role in the adsorption process of phosphate. When pH < pH pzc (4.99), phosphate is adsorbed by electrostatic gravitation between it and protonated positively charged amino and hydroxyl groups on La and Al, while when pH > pH pzc , phosphate is removed by ligand exchange between it and hydroxyl groups on La and Al. A stable, low-cost, and efficient bimetallic MOFs-based phosphate adsorbent was designed and prepared in this paper, and the results can provide reference for researchers in environmental chemical engineering.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is known as a valuable resource, and recycling it from wastewater can avoid environmental pollution and resource waste. Herein, a regenerable magnetic Fe3O4 and La-based metal-organic framework functional material (Fe3O4/La-MOF) was synthesized by solvent thermal method and its adsorption perfor-mances of phosphate were evaluated. The as-prepared magnetic Fe3O4/La-MOF exhibited magnetic separation efficiency of 97.9% and it could maintain the high adsorption capacity over a wide pH range from 3 to 10, as well as showed an excellent P adsorption selectivity in presence of Cl-, NO3-, HCO3-, CO32- and SO42-. The isotherm data were consistent with the Langmuir model, and the adsorption kinetic data conformed to the pseudo-second-order model, revealing that there was chemical adsorption between Fe3O4/La-MOF and phosphate. The electro-chemical behavior of Fe3O4/La-MOF before and after phosphate adsorption showed that the band gap energy of LUMO (Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital) and HOMO (Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital) of P adsorbed Fe3O4/La-MOF was lower than that of the material itself, which indicated the successful adsorption of phosphate on Fe3O4/La-MOF and the forming of a perfect hybrid structure. The characterization analysis of FT-IR and XPS illustrated that intra-sphere complex (La-O-P) formed between Fe3O4/La-MOF and phosphate by ligand ex-change, which might be the dominant mechanism, followed by electrostatic attraction and precipitation. This study highlighted the great promise of magnetic reusable Fe3O4/La-MOF composite for application in phosphate removal and recovery.
Controllable Preparation of Superparamagnetic Fe3O4@La(OH)3 Inorganic Polymer for Rapid Adsorption and Separation of Phosphate

Abstract:Superparamagnetic Fe3O4 particles have been synthesized by solvothermal method, and a layer of dense silica sol polymer is coated on the surface prepared by sol-gel technique; then La(OH)3 covered the surface of silica sol polymer in an irregular shape by controlled in situ growth technology. These magnetic materials are characterized by TEM, FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDS and VSM; the results show that La(OH)3 nanoparticles have successfully modified on Fe3O4 surface. The prepared Fe3O4@La(OH)3 inorganic polymer has been used as adsorbent to remove phosphate efficiently. The effects of solution pH, adsorbent dosage and co-existing ions on phosphate removal are investigated. Moreover, the adsorption kinetic equation and isothermal model are used to describe the adsorption performance of Fe3O4@La(OH)3. It was observed that Fe3O4@La(OH)3 exhibits a fast equilibrium time of 20 min, high phosphate removal rate (>95.7%), high sorption capacity of 63.72 mgP/g, excellent selectivity for phosphate in the presence of competing ions, under the conditions of phosphate concentration 30 mgP/L, pH = 7, adsorbent dose 0.6 g/L and room temperature. The phosphate adsorption process by Fe3O4@La(OH)3 is best described by the pseudo-second-order equation and Langmuir isotherm model. Furthermore, the real samples and reusability experiment indicate that Fe3O4@La(OH)3 could be regenerated after desorption, and 92.78% phosphate removing remained after five cycles. Therefore, La(OH)3 nanoparticles deposited on the surface of monodisperse Fe3O4 microspheres have been synthesized for the first time by a controlled in-situ growth method. Experiments have proved that Fe3O4@La(OH)3 particles with fast separability, large adsorption capacity and easy reusability can be used as a promising material in the treatment of phosphate wastewater or organic pollutants containing phosphoric acid functional group.

Abstract:Lanthanum molybdate/magnetite (M-La2(MoO4)3) with various LaCl3/Fe3O4 mass ratios was synthesized and optimized for selective phosphate removal from wastewater. M-La2(MoO4)3 (2:1) was selected on the basis of phosphate sorption capacity for further experiments and characterized by a variety of methods. The phosphate sorption kinetics, isotherms, and matrix effect were studied. The maximum sorption capacity at initial pH 7 indicates the possible applicability M-La2(MoO4)3 (2:1) in removing phosphate from the aquatic environment. Phosphate removal by M-La2(MoO4)3 (2:1) with high selectivity was achieved in the presence of other co-existing anions, while calcium and magnesium ions were found to inhibit the sorption process. The sorption isotherm study showed that Freundlich and Sips models fit better the Langmuir model, indicating that heterogeneous multilayer sorption was dominant during the phosphate sorption process. Sorption kinetic results showed that the pseudo-first-order kinetic model can describe well the phosphate sorption process by M-La2(MoO4)3 (2:1). Consecutive sorption-desorption runs showed that M-La2(MoO4)3 (2:1) could be reused for a few cycles. Simultaneous removal of phosphate and organic matter was achieved in real wastewater by using M-La2(MoO4)3 (2:1). The sorption mechanism was inner-sphere complexation.
Highly Effective Wastewater Phosphorus Removal by Phosphorus Accumulating Organism Combined with Magnetic Sorbent MFC@La(OH)3

Abstract:To enhance the efficiency of phosphate removal by phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs), a magnetic Fe3O4 core-shell (MFC) sorbent was synthesized to remove the intracellular phosphorus of PAOs. The MFC was prepared by the hydrothermal method, and then functionalized with La(OH)(3) by depositing on the MFC surface. The sorbent (MFC@ La(OH) 3) was easy to separate from wastewater and had a high phosphate adsorption capacity of 45.45 mg/g at 30 degrees C. The batch experiments were conducted to probe the influence of adsorbent on PAOs (Pseudomonas putida). The results showed that the adsorbent could inhibit the growth of microorganism by competing for the phosphate in solution, and further improving the hydrolysis of polyphosphates (polyP) from microorganism. The microorganism after the hydrolysis of polyP could accumulate phosphate more rapidly when it was added into phosphorus-rich medium. The optimized condition for polyP hydrolysis from microorganism was 0.1 g/100 mL of sorbent dosage and 1 h of contacting time. The sorbent exhibited stable phosphate adsorption behavior after 5 adsorption-desorption cycles. Phosphate could be effectively recovered through the regeneration of phosphate loaded MFC@ La(OH) 3 under alkaline condition. The present findings indicate that PAOs combined with MFC@ La(OH)(3) is a novel and highly effective method for removing phosphate in wastewater and recovering phosphorus resource.
Enhanced phosphate removal and antibacterial action using hierarchically structured La MOF-20%-C adsorbents and filter membranes

Abstract:To enhance the phosphate removal performance, a porous material (La MOF-20 %-C) was prepared by selectively removing the thermally unstable NH 2 -BDC ligand from a lanthanum dual organic ligand MOF through pyrolysis. This innovative approach equips La-MOF-20 %-C with dual functionalities: high phosphate adsorption capacity and robust antibacterial effects. The adsorbent showcased a remarkable phosphate adsorption capacity of 97.24 mg P/g and reached equilibrium within 90 min. The material exhibits good anti-interference capability, and the presence of multiple coexisting ions does not affect its adsorption performance. Additionally, it can be used over a wide pH range (3.0–8.0) and has good reusability. Mechanistic studies indicated that electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange were the primary mechanisms for phosphate adsorption. Moreover, La MOF-20 %-C effectively inhibited the metabolic activities of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus through phosphorus starvation and electrostatic attraction, demonstrating significant antibacterial properties. Importantly, the fabrication of this material into a filter membrane enabled the successful treatment of 16.8 L of actual wastewater, achieving an overall phosphate removal rate of over 85 %, and effectively removing total bacteria. These findings highlight La MOF-20 %-C as a highly promising material with dual functionality for phosphate removal and bacterial inhibition.

Abstract:A nanostructured Fe–Al–Mn trimetal oxide adsorbent for phosphate removal with a Fe:Al:Mn molar ratio of 3:3:1 was prepared using simultaneous oxidation and coprecipitation method. The adsorbent was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) with an EDAX (energy dispersive analysis of X-ray). The results indicated that the Fe–Al–Mn trimetal oxide was amorphous and nanostructured. Zeta potential measurements showed that it possessed a high isoelectric point (around 9). The phosphate removal gradually decreased with the increasing of pH(4–10.5). The adsorption isotherms on the adsorbent were described by Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin models at pH6.8 and followed the fitting order: Freundlich>Temkin>Langmuir. At 25°C, the maximum adsorption capacity for the adsorbent was about 48.3mg/g, which was higher than their reported single component oxide. The kinetic data were described better by the pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetic rate model. Thermodynamic analyses indicated that the phosphate adsorption on the Fe–Al–Mn trimetal oxide was endothermic and spontaneous in nature. The sequence of coexisting anions studied competing with phosphate was SiO32−>HCO3−>SO42−. The results of zeta potential, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses indicated that electrostatic attraction and replacement of surface hydroxyl groups (MOH) by phosphate via the formation of inner‐sphere complex were the main adsorption mechanism. The Fe–Al–Mn trimetal oxide with good specific affinity towards phosphate was a promising adsorbent for phosphate removal from natural waters and municipal wastewaters.

Abstract:The bimetallic La‐Zr‐MOFs have good resistance to acids and alkalis and have a wide pH range and a high selectivity for phosphate in a complex environment. The maximum adsorption capacity of La‐Zr‐MOFs was 127.7 mg g−1. And the adsorption mechanism involves ligand exchange and electrostatic interaction. Deposition of excessive phosphate in natural water column caused several issues, like the eutrophication and destruction of aquatic ecosystems. Adsorption has been an effective and convenient method for phosphate elimination. Herein, a novel bimetallic metal–organic framework adsorbent, namely, La‐Zr‐MOF, was prepared, and the morphology, crystallite, characteristic functional groups, specific surface area, and composite material surfaces were analyzed using XRD, FT‐IR, SEM‐EDS, and BET. The adsorption performance of the adsorbent was systematically evaluated by batch adsorption experiments, and the adsorption thermodynamic and kinetic properties were analyzed. The results reveal that La‐Zr‐MOF exhibits a high selectivity and sorption performance for phosphate, and the adsorption of La‐Zr‐MOF follows the Langmuir and pseudo–second‐order models; the phosphate removal procedure is a chemisorption accompanied by an endothermic reaction, and the maximum capacity was 127.7 mg g−1. Combined with batch adsorption experiments, kinetic and thermodynamic studies and various characterization analyses together revealed the phosphate removal mechanism, mainly ligand exchange and electrostatic interactions.

Phosphate removal from actual wastewater via La(OH)3-C3N4 adsorption: Performance, mechanisms and applicability

Abstract:In this study, La(OH)3 nanoparticles were immobilized on C3N4 to effectively restrict their aggregation and subsequently enhance the La utilization efficiency to promote phosphate adsorption. The prepared La(OH)3-C3N4 nanocomposite was characterized by SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, BET and Zeta potential analysis. Batch and continuously-fed (fixed-bed column) experiments to assess the adsorption performance of La(OH)3-C3N4 showed that the composite exhibits superior utilization efficiency, resulting to relatively quick adsorption with a short equilibrium time of 30 min. The theoretical maximum P adsorption capacity reached the 148.35 mg·g-1, efficiency that remained unaffected by the anions and HA present. The adsorption mechanism showed stability in a wide pH range (4.0-11.0) and is considered effective even after extensive use (five-cycles). The dynamics of the adsorption capacity and the half-penetration time values were estimated by 'Thomas' and 'Yoon-Nelson' models showed that are better represented from the experimental values obtained from the fixed-bed column trial. The adsorption mechanisms were attributed to surface precipitation, electrostatic attraction, and inner-sphere complexation via ligand exchange. Furthermore, La(OH)3-C3N4 demonstrated high efficiency in scavenging phosphate from both diluted and concentrated wastewater (natural pond and swine wastewater respectively). The above confirm that La(OH)3-C3N4 is a promising composite material for phosphate management in aqueous environments.

Mesoporous La-based nanorods synthesized from a novel IL-SFME for phosphate removal in aquatic systems

Abstract:La-based nanorods with large mesopores were synthesized at a low temperature (35°C) in a reverse surfactant-free microemulsion (SFME). The SFME consisted of hydrophilic ionic liquid (IL) propylammonium formate (PAF), hydrophobic IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (bmimPF6), and protic IL diethylammonium formate (DEAF), corresponding to the water phase, oil phase, and amphi-solvent, respectively. This IL-SFME, as a new microemulsion, was formed by the three ionic liquids without any volatile organic solvents. The morphology and properties of the La-based material were investigated utilizing transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, specific surface analysis, and zeta potential measurements. The obtained complex was lanthanum methanoate La(COOH)3 which exhibited a large specific BET surface area (47.71 m2/g) and high pHpzc (11.63), assuming a remarkable removal ability on phosphate in aqueous solutions within a wide range of pH values. This paper presents a facile, non-toxic, and energy-efficient route of the material, owing to the absence of both surfactant and high temperature treatment usually adapted in other literatures.The adsorption of the La(COOH)3 nanorods for phosphate was investigated by changing adsorbent dosage, initial phosphate concentration, contact time, and pH value. The sorption kinetics and isotherms of phosphate on the La-based adsorbent could be explained by the pseudo second-order and Langmuir model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of the product was 381.6 mg PO43-/g, evidently higher than usual phosphate adsorbents. The study on the mechanism revealed that the adsorption mainly comes from the precipitation, electrostatic interaction, and ligand exchange. The adsorbed phosphate could nearly be desorbed by NaOH solution for reusability. To summarize, the synthesized mesoporous La-based nanorods unfolds a promising application in the phosphate adsorption.

Abstract:Advanced phosphate removal technologies are necessary to mitigate eutrophication problems. Since lanthanum and phosphate have a strong affinity for each other, lanthanum-doped composite materials are widely applied in phosphate removal. In this study, Mg/Fe/La LDOs (MFL) was synthesized successfully by calcination, which considerably enhanced the adsorption capacity of phosphate by reconstructing and compositing metal oxide compounds. MFL-1/10-350 was characterized by XRD, BET, zeta potential, SEM, TGA, XPS, and FTIR. The MFL-1/10-350 showed a typical BET surface area of 154.61 m2/g and was composed of Mg, Fe, La, and O. MFL-1/10-350 exhibited a high Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of 123.15 mg P/g at 25 °C and strong selectivity for phosphate. The mechanisms of phosphate adsorption on the samples are mainly electrostatic interactions, surface complexation effects, and ion exchange. When 0.5 g/L of MFL-1/10-350 was added to real wastewater with a phosphate content of 3.6 mg P/L, the phosphate concentration quickly decreased to less than 0.12 mg P/L. Phosphorus-adsorbed LDOs (LDOs-P) can provide phosphorus continuously to promote rice growth. The composite material of MFL-1/10-350 was harmless to the growth of rice during the experiment. The results show that MFL-1/10-350 is an ideal material for the effective adsorption and recovery of phosphorus. This provides a possible way for phosphorus removal and recycling in water.

Abstract:Growing evidence shows that dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) triggers eutrophication due to its bioavailability in lakes. However, current removal strategies are focused more on dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) than DOP due to insufficient understanding and analytical challenges. Herein, a facile molten salt-mediated process was used to prepare a series of lanthanum-based adsorbents. In batch experiments, the as-developed LaFeO-U comprising α-Fe 2 O 3 /LaOCl displayed higher adsorption capacities for DIP and DOP than the pure La or pure Fe counterparts due to the La/Fe dual-functional sites. Over 79.90% and 95.29% of the dissolved total phosphorus (DTP) in aquaculture tailwater and secondary effluent from WWTP were removed, respectively, of which approximately 23.5% and 44.3% of the DOP were completely captured. Furthermore, the fate of the DOP after the introduction of LaFeO-U was monitored with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), indicating the variations in species and molecular weight, which enabled optimization of the adsorbent for deep-level P removal. The surface precipitation mechanism and inner-sphere complexation caused by the transformation of LaOCl into La(OH) 3 facilitated the DIP removal, while inner-sphere complexes formed on the surfaces of the La/Fe composites dominated DOP adsorption. This work provides new insight into the functional materials designed for synchronous removal of DIP and DOP.

Abstract:The separation and recycling of phosphate from sewage are indispensable to be explored due to eutrophication and phosphorus deficiency. Herein, iron-aluminum metal organic framework (Fe-Al-MOF) was successfully synthesized via solvothermal one-step treatment. The Fe-Al-MOF was measured using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectrometry (IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray powder diffractometer (XRD). Fe-Al-MOF was selected to explore phosphate adsorption performance and its mechanism. The results showed that Fe-Al-MOF adsorbent demonstrated an excellent phosphate sorption capacity of 38.33 mg P/L, strong interference immunity in the presence of co-existing ions and optimal pH adapted to real wastewater. The experimental data was in accordance with the Langmuir models and the pseudo-second-order model, indicating monolayer adsorption as well as physical and chemical adsorption. More importantly, Fe-Al-MOF could reserve over 80% after four continuous regeneration cycles in comparison with the first adsorption capacity, showing its economics. A series of characterizations declared that chemical adsorption, ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction were main adsorption mechanisms by Fe-Al-MOF. Overall, Fe-Al-MOF has high stability, good reusability and high economy to apply for controlling wastewater and eutrophication.

Abstract:A novel lanthanum-doped MIL-101 (La-MIL-101) material was synthesized through the solvothermal method and used for phosphate adsorption in water. XRD and FT-IR characterization results showed that lanthanum was successfully doped into MIL-101, and changed the structure of the crystal of MIL-101. The adsorption process of phosphate by 0.5La-MIL-101 conformed to the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Its saturated adsorption capacity was 344.02 mg·g −1 , which was significantly greater than that of MIL-101 (133.08 mg·g −1 ). Moreover, 0.5La-MIL-101 had a wide-range pH operation (3.0–10.0) and good reusability. Utilizing FT-IR and XPS characterization, it can be indicated that the mechanism of phosphate adsorption by 0.5La-MIL-101 is through electrostatic attraction and the exchange of ligands to form Fe/La–O-P internal complexes. The 0.5La-MIL-101 adsorbent prepared in this paper can provide a useful guideline for the design of high-performance and reusable phosphate adsorbent.

Abstract:Water eutrophication caused by the excessive discharge of phosphate has been a topic theme in decades and phosphate removal from aqueous solution is of great significance. Adsorbents of iron (hydroxyl)oxides particles exhibited its great potential in environmental pollution remediation. However, iron (hydroxyl)oxides are easy to aggregate, resulting in the decreased reactivity. In this study, we immobilized FeOOH on the surface of melamine sponge (MS). The characterization results of scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that FeOOH was well-dispersed on melamine sponge. Further phosphate removal experiments results elucidated that the maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of the synthesized material () was 115.5 mg P/g when the theoretical mass ratio of Fe to MS was 5:1. Meanwhile, the physical adsorption with electrostatic attraction and chemical adsorption with the formation inner-sphere complex were involved for phosphate treated by without pH adjustment. Subsequently, we investigated the phosphate removal performance of in a packed column, and found that capacity of phosphate removed by reached 11.3 mg/g, and the packed column with would be penetrated at 1201 BVs around 41 h, suggesting that application of to treat phosphate-contained wastewater was feasible. Moreover, when the phosphate-containing lake water was treated with , the algae growth in the treated water was significantly inhibited, indicating that could be utilized to control the water eutrophication. Overall, this study provided a promising adsorbent for phosphate-contained water treatment.

Abstract:The excessive amounts of phosphorus (P) discharged and usage have caused eutrophication and algal blooms, which seriously jeopardize the environment even the human health. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) served as carriers to develop a lanthanum-based sodium alginate hydrogel (La-CNT-COOH/SA) aimed at efficiently removing phosphate from wastewater. Characterization results confirmed successful deposition of La(OH)3 nanoparticles onto CNT-COOH. The optimal adsorption efficiency of La-CNT-COOH/SA hydrogels occurred at pH 4, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 54.4 mg/g under an initial phosphate concentration of 60 mg/L. Batch experiments demonstrated that La-CNT-COOH/SA performed well across a favorable pH range and exhibited high tolerance to common coexisting ions during phosphate adsorption. Adsorption isotherms indicated a dominance of both physical and chemical mechanisms in phosphate removal by La-CNT-COOH/SA. At elevated phosphate concentrations, the adsorption process followed quasi-second-order kinetics, primarily driven by chemical adsorption. Multi-instrument characterization emphasized that the substantial loading of La(OH)3 on CNT-COOH significantly contributed to adsorption, alongside crosslinked lanthanum ions on sodium alginate and abundant hydroxyl groups. Mechanisms of adsorption by La-CNT-COOH/SA encompassed electrostatic interactions, surface precipitation, and in-sphere complexation (La-O-P). These findings on fabrication, properties, and adsorption mechanisms of the phosphate-removal hydrogel lay a theoretical foundation for applying biomass-based materials in large-scale remediation practices.
