Abstract:Pit lakes in the 'anthropogenic lake district' in the Muskau Arch (western Poland; central Europe) are strongly affected by acid mine drainage (AMD). The studied acidic pit lake, ŁK-61 (pH <3), is also exposed to floods due to its location in the flood hazard area, which may significantly influence the geochemical behavior of elements. The elemental compositions of water and lake sediment samples were measured with ICP-OES and ICP-MS. The sediment profile was also examined for 137Cs and 210Po activity concentrations using gamma and alpha spectrometry, respectively. Grain size distribution, mineralogical composition, diatoms, and organic matter content in the collected core were also determined. The key factors responsible for the distribution of selected heavy metals (e.g., Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) and radioisotopes (137Cs and 210Po) in the bottom sediments of Lake ŁK-61 are their coprecipitation/precipitation with Fe and Al secondary minerals and their sorption onto authigenic and allogenic phases. These processes are likely driven by the lake tributary, which is an important source of dissolved elements. The data also showed that the physiochemical parameters of Lake ŁK-61 water changed during an episodic depositional event, i.e., the flood of the Nysa Łużycka River in the summer of 2010. The flood caused an increase in the water pH, as interpreted from the subfossil diatom studies. The down-core profiles of the studied heavy metal and radionuclide (HMRs) contents were probably affected by this depositional event, which prevented a detailed age determination of the collected lake sediments with 137Cs and 210Pb dating methods. Geochemical modeling indicates that the flood-related shift in the physicochemical parameters of the lake water could have caused the scavenging of dissolved elements by the precipitation of fresh secondary minerals. Moreover, particles contaminated with HMRs have also possibly been delivered by the river, along with the nutrients (e.g., phosphorus and nitrogen).

Abstract:The investigation was carried out on a small pond situated on a recent mine spoil at Bolesław in the Olkusz region with Zn–Pb ore deposits. Water of the pond had pH 7.2–8.5 and low concentrations of heavy metals. Concentrations of Pb (487 μg g − 1) and Zn (1,991 μg g − 1) in the sediment were very high and potentially could lead to toxicological effects. In the pond, 48 taxa of macroinvertebrates belonging to Oligochaeta and water stages of Ephemeroptera, Odonata, Megaloptera, Trichoptera, Heteroptera, Coleoptera and Diptera (mainly Chironomidae family) were found. The influence of heavy metals on macroinvertebrates diversity was not found. Effect of heavy metal pollution was observed on the appearance of chromosome aberrations in the polytene chromosomes of Chironomidae larvae. It was manifested by two ways: (1) in Kiefferulus tendipediformis and Chironomus sp. chromosome rearrangements in fixed state (tandem fusion and homozygous inversions), indicated intensive process of speciation; (2) in Chironomus sp., K. tendipediformis, Glyptotendipes gripekoveni (Chironomidae) somatic chromosome rearrangements (inversions, deficiencies, specific puffs, polyploidy) affected few cells of every individual. The somatic functional and structural alterations in Chironomidae species are particular suitable as biomarkers—they can be easily identified and used for detecting toxic agents in the environment.

Abstract:Many lakes in industrialised areas have undergone anthropogenically driven eutrophication and increases in pollution leading to decreased water and sediment quality. In some cases, these effects are enhanced by seasonally changing lake redox conditions that may act to concentrate potentially toxic elements sufficiently to exceed internationally recognised Sediment Quality Standards, impacting key species and jeopardizing water supply.&#160; A combined, geochemical and sediment microfabric analysis is applied to reconstruct the history of cultural eutrophication and pollution in the North and South Basins of Windermere, England&#8217;s largest natural lake. We also document a record of seismicity and link increased sedimentation rates and sediment instability. The onset and development of eutrophication in Windermere occurred from the mid-19th to the early 20th centuries.&#160; Raised lake productivity is indicated by an increase in sedimentary &#948;13C, and increased pollution by elevated sedimentary trace metals (Pb, Zn, Cu, Hg, and As), likely enhanced by incorporation and adsorption to settling diatom aggregates, preserved as sedimentary laminae. In the South Basin of the lake, contemporaneous increasing sediment &#948;15N values also occur in step with increasing Zn, Hg, Cu from this time, linking metal enrichment to the input of isotopically heavy nitrate (N) from anthropogenic sources including sewage. From around 1930, a decrease in Mn and Fe-rich laminae indicate reduced deep water ventilation, and increased incidence of sediment anoxia, being most intense in the deeper North Basin where benthic activity intermittently ceased. Strongly reducing conditions in the sediment promoted Fe and Mn reduction and the formation of unusual Pb-bearing barite, hitherto only described from toxic mine wastes and contaminated soils. In the North Basin cores a clay rich laminae dated 1979-1980 is shown to be a mass transport deposit linked to large scale slope failure likely caused by the 4.7 ML 1979 Carlisle earthquake. Slope failure was exacerbated by preconditioning principally by increased sedimentation as a result of anthropogenic activities. From 1980 there was a partial recovery in oxygenation with Mn and Fe rich laminae returning in some parts. But in the South Basin, the continued impacts of sewage discharge is indicated by elevated &#948;15N of organic matter. Imaging and X-ray microanalysis using scanning electron microscopy has enabled the identification of seasonal-scale redox mineralisation of Mn, Fe and Ba related to intermittent sediment anoxia. Elevated concentrations of Mn, Fe, Ba, and As also occur in the surficial sediment and provide evidence for dynamic redox mobilisation of potentially toxic elements that may be released to the lake waters. Concentrations of As, in particular, exceed international Sediment Quality Standards. These surface enrichments in As and other toxic elements may become more prevalent in the future with climate change driving lengthened summer stratification in the lake.
Toxic metal pollution of aquatic ecosystems of European Union nature protection areas in a region of intensive agriculture (Lake Gopło, Poland)

Abstract:The paper presents the results of research into toxic metal concentrations in the surface layer of bottom sediments in Lake Gopło. The research objectives were to identify the levels and spatial variability of Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn, Ni, Cr, As and Hg concentrations, their potential sources and the determinants of pollution levels. Metal contamination of the sediments was assessed using the geoaccumulation index (Igeo), pollution load index (PLI) and ecological risk index (RI). Chemometric methods (Pearson correlation, principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) were used to determine the relationship between sampling sites and concentrations of toxic metals, thereby identifying the sources of contamination. The research found that grain-size composition, carbonate content and organic matter content in the bottom surface sediments of Lake Gopło are all characterised by low diversity. Therefore, the lithological features of the sediments are not a major factor in the concentrations and spatial variability of the metals. It was found that the metal concentrations in the great majority of samples were above regional geochemical background levels. The geochemical indices (Igeo, PLI, RI) indicate that the degree of toxic metal pollution in the sediments is slight in the central and southern parts of the lake and high in the northern part. The chemical analysis results showed that the samples in the central and southern parts of the lake differ little in their shares and concentrations of individual metals. This provides evidence that, as well as geogenic sources, their presence in sediments can be associated with non-point sources related to agricultural activities and with atmospheric sources (mainly the products of fossil fuel combustion). The higher concentrations of metals (especially Ni, Cd, Cr and Hg) in the northern part of the lake are influenced by the supply of industrial and communal pollutants from the lakeside town of Kruszwica. A factor limiting the migration of pollutants from the northern part of the lake towards the south is the lake's morphology of the lake, which hinders water exchange between the northern part and the rest of the lake.

Abstract:Anthropogenic pollutants that accumulate in bottom sediments may pose a serious threat to the aquatic environment and humans. The aim of the study was to determine the ecological risk related to the contamination of sediment with heavy metals and the relationship between the accumulation of heavy metals and various granulometric fractions and humic substances in the bottom sediments of small retention reservoirs located in catchments of varying anthropopressure. The research objects were five small dam reservoirs located in south-eastern Poland. The sediments of the reservoir exposed to the greatest anthropopressure from the catchment area posed a serious threat to aquatic organisms feeding at the bottom. The bottom sediments of the remaining reservoirs showed a low level of potential toxicity (or non-toxicity). The observed relationship between the enrichment of sediments with organic matter (OM) and the increased risk of their ecotoxic impact on aquatic organisms was determined by excessive exposure to heavy metal contamination. The sand content did not appear to have a clear effect on the metal accumulation, although it was associated with enrichment in OM. Due to diverse environmental conditions, it was not possible to unequivocally confirm that the accumulation of heavy metals in the sediments of small retention reservoirs directly depends on the content of organic matter and humic substances, but such relationships were observed in most of the objects.

Abstract:Abstract The concentration of elements in sediments is an important aspect of the quality of water ecosystems. The element concentrations in bottom sediments from Goczalkowice Reservoir, Poland, were investigated to determine the levels, accumulation and distribution of elements; to understand the contamination and potential toxicity of elements; and to trace the possible source of pollution. Sediments were collected from 8 sampling points. The functional speciation, mobility and bioavailability of elements were evaluated by means of modified Tessier sequential extraction. The element contents were measured by optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma. The experimental results were analyzed using chemometric methods such as principal component analysis and cluster analysis to elucidate the metal distributions, correlations and associations. The highest concentrations of most elements were found at the center of the reservoir. The distribution of metals in the individual fractions was varied. To assess the extent of anthropogenic impact indices, contamination factor, degree of contamination, metal pollution index and risk assessment code were applied. The calculated factors showed the highest contamination factor and the ability of chromium to be released from sediments. The degree of contamination showed that the area is characterized by a very high contamination. Strontium and manganese showed high potential ecological risk for sediments.

Abstract:Abstract The optimization of new methodology for simultaneous determination of arsenic [As(III), As(V)] and antimony [Sb(III), Sb(V), SbMe 3 ] species using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in water and bottom sediment samples collected from the dam Kozłowa Góra Reservoir (Poland) was studied. Samples were collected monthly from May to September 2018 in four-point (water) and fifth-point (sediment) transects. The contents of Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cr, Rb, Sr, Cd, Sb, Ba, Tl, Pb, and Sb were studied in water and bottom sediments using ICP-MS techniques. Additionally, arsenic and antimony fractions were determined in sediments with the BCR method. Pollution Load Index (PLI), Geoaccumulation Index (I geo ), LAWA classification, and Sb/As ratio indicated the presence of extreme sediment pollution for Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cr from anthropogenic sources. Research has shown that the easy-leached bottom sediment fraction contained in most cases more As(V) and Sb(V). But often Sb(V) concentration was equal as Sb(III), which can be released into the pelagic zone under favorable conditions. Even though As(V) and Sb(V) prevail in the reservoir bottom sediments, they can be transformed into As(III) and Sb(III) as a result of drastic changes in pH or redox potential. The Kozłowa Góra sediments are heavily polluted with Pb, Zn, Cd, and As, Cu, and Ni. The highest concentrations of the heavy metals were recorded in the middle of the tank and there was a small spatial variability. The migration of metals along the reservoir transect was closely related to its morphometry.

Late-Holocene diatom community response to climate driven chemical changes in a small, subarctic lake, Northwest Territories, Canada

Abstract:The paleolimnological record of diatoms and climate, spanning the last 2800 years, was investigated in a small subarctic lake (Pocket Lake) that from AD 1948 to 2004 was contaminated by gold smelting waste. An age-depth model was constructed using a combination of 210 Pb, 14 C, and tephra to determine a 2800 year history of lake ontogeny (natural aging), biological diversity, and regional climate variability. Diatoms form six strong paleoecological assemblages over time in response to changes in local hydrological and sedimentological conditions (including metals). Selected environmental variables explained 28.8% of the variance in the diatom assemblages, with Fe, Ca, and sediment end member distribution being important indicators. The diatom assemblages correlated to the Iron Age Cold Epoch (2800–2300 cal BP), Roman Warm Period (2250–1610 cal BP), Dark Age Cold Period (1500–1050 cal BP), Medieval Climate Anomaly (ca. 1100–800 cal BP), and the Little Ice Age (800–200 cal BP). The disappearance of Staurosira venter highlights the change from the Iron Age Cold Epoch to the Roman Warm Period. After deposition of the White River Ash (833–850 CE; 1117–1100 cal BP), transition to circumneutral conditions was followed in tandem by a transition to planktic influenced communities. Ten discrete peaks of Cu, Pb, and Zn were observed and attributed to soluble mobility from catchment soils through enhanced seepage and spring snowmelt. The prominent metal spikes were aligned with increases in Brachysira neoexilis. Downward mobilization of arsenic and antimony from contaminated surficial sediments highlight the problem of post depositional industrial contamination of paleosediments. Results demonstrate that paleoclimatic changes in the region, modulated by solar radiation, impacted temperature and precipitation in the lake catchment, influencing temporal shifts in diatom ecology. Changes in diatom taxa richness provided valuable information on the relative influence of water quality (planktic taxa) and sediment input (benthic taxa). The diatom assemblage succession also provides evidence that natural aging over time has played a role in the ecological evolution of the lake.

Abstract:Lake Konin is a small and shallow lake under the influence of highly eutrophic riverine waters. Feeding the lake as a backwater during high water level periods, the River Obra had exerted a decisive impact on lake water quality, and thus a new dike with a closing device was created. Protective measures were followed by the application of Effective Microorganisms (EM), aiming at a reduction in nutrient concentrations and CyanoHABs. Positive changes in the ecosystem were initiated (increased phytoplankton diversity), but cyanobacteria blooms were still present due to high nutrient content. Some changes were observed in the lake sediments (phosphorus (P) and its fractions, P in pore waters, organic matter and experimental assessment of internal P loading) studied before and during treatment. A slight increase in P content in sediments was noted, as a result of an increase in the Res-P fraction. Simultaneously, a decrease in the most mobile fractions was observed. Summer internal P load was reduced from 5.4 kgP d−1 before the treatment to less than 1 kgP d−1 in the first year, but increased again in the second year to 4.5 kgP d−1. Similarly to lake water quality, positive changes were induced in the lake sediments; nevertheless, they still acted as an important source of nutrients for primary producers. Additional restoration methods shall be considered, as combined treatments used simultaneously are reported to be the most effective for water quality improvement.

Metal(loid) speciation in a river subjected to industrial anthropopressure: chemometric and environmental studies

Abstract:High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was applied to the speciation of arsenic [As(III), As(V), and AsB (arsenobetaine)], MMA (monomethylarsonic acid), DMA (dimethylarsinic acid), antimony [Sb(III) and Sb(V)], and chromium [Cr(III) and Cr(VI)] in water and bottom sediment samples collected from the urban Bytomka River (Poland). The main objective of the study was the research of As, Cr and Sb species in the Bytomka River, as well as the simplified three-stage sequential chemical extraction of bottom sediments according to the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (BCR). The contents of V, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Ag, Cd, Te, Ba, Tl, Pb, Fe, Ga, and U in the water and bottom sediments were tested using the ICP-MS technique. The risk assessment code (RAC) indicated a medium risk for As and a high risk for Sb to the environment. Sequential chemical extraction of bottom sediments showed that As and Cr were strongly demobilized. Sb was mainly bound with the ion-exchange fraction and posed a serious threat to the environment. Chemometric analysis with the (dis)similarity analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) allowed for visualization of the variability and correlations of the analyzed elements.
Ecological risk assessment and spatial distribution of heavy metals in surface sediments. A case study of two small storage reservoirs, SE Poland

Abstract:The article shows the results of research on heavy metals (Cr, Zn, Ni, Cu, Pb, Cd) content in bottom sediments of two small storage reservoirs located in the south-eastern part of Poland. The analyses covered the top 10 cm layer of sediment samples taken in transects perpendicular to the shoreline, located in upper, central and lower sections of the studied reservoirs. The ordinary kriging method was applied to interpolate spatial distribution of heavy metals content in the sediments. The assessment of surface sediment contamination with heavy metals was based on a threshold effect level and probable effect level methods. In addition, the ecological risk was assessed on the basis of the indices: potential ecological risk index and toxic risk index. Moreover, the principal component analysis was carried out to find determinants for the distribution of the analyzed trace elements in reservoirs. The results of the completed analysis have proven that the highest concentrations of heavy metals (HM) are found in the vicinity of dams in both reservoirs. Calculated probable effects level values indicate a negative impact of Pb- Blizyn Reservoir (BR) and Cd- Maloszowka Reservoir (MR) on aquatic biota. The analysis of heavy metal content and their interrelationships in surface sediments proves that Pb, Cu and Zn in the BR and Cd and Cr in the MR have anthropogenic origins. Moreover, the main determinants for HM distribution in the reservoir are hydromorphological parameters, which determine sediment grading and organic matter transport.

Large shallow lake response to anthropogenic stressors and climate change: Missing macroinvertebrate recovery after oligotrophication (Lake Balaton, East-Central Europe)

Abstract:East-Central Europe's largest shallow lake, Balaton, experienced strong eutrophication in the 1970-80s, followed by water quality improvement and oligotrophication by 2010 CE. Recently however, repeated cyanobacterial blooms occurred and warned that internal P-recycling can act similarly to external P load, therefore we need a better understanding of past water level (WL) and trophic changes in the lake. In this study we discuss the last 500-yr trophic, WL and habitat changes of the lake using paleoecological (chironomids, pollen) and geochemical (sediment chlorophyll, TOC, TS, TN, C/H ratio, major and trace element) methods. We demonstrate that the most intensive and irreversible change in the macroinvertebrate fauna occurred during the period of economic boom between the First and Second World War (∼1925-1940 CE), when large-scale built-in and leisure use of the lake has intensified. At that time, the Procladius-Microchironomus-Stempellina dominated community transformed to Procladius-Chironomus plumosus-type-Microchironomus community that coincided with land use changes, intensified erosion and water-level regulation in the lake with the maintenance of year-round high WL. This was followed by the impoverishment and population size decrease of the chironomid fauna and Procladius dominance since 1940 CE, without any recovery after 1994 CE despite the ongoing oligotrophication. Accelerated rate of change and turnover of the fauna was connected to an increase in the benthivorous fish biomass and eutrophication. The basin lost almost completely its once characteristic Stempellina species between 1927 and 1940 CE due to trophic level increase and seasonal anoxia in the Szemes Basin. Reference conditions for ecosystem improvement were assigned to 1740-1900 CE. We conclude that in spite of the ongoing oligotrophication, the re-establishment of the Procladius-Microchironomus-Stempellina assemblage is hampered, and requires fish population regulation.

Abstract:Marine diatoms are essential members of both phytoplankton and phytobenthic communities, able to colonize submerged artificial and natural surfaces, contributing to benthic microbial biomass. Diatoms have developed different adaptative mechanisms to cope with various environmental stresses, including high concentrations of heavy metals. The aim of this study was to investigate the arsenic resistance of diatoms, isolated from microbial mats collected from an arsenic-rich brackish pond (Lake Mergolo della Tonnara, Italy), by evaluating (i) their ability to form biofilms in the presence of arsenite (AsIII) or arsenate (AsV), and (ii) the variations in the photosynthetic pigments' contents (i.e., chlorophyll a and c) in their biofilms. The mats were dominated by members of the genus Amphora, and isolates were affiliated with species of A. capitellata, A. coffeaeformis, and A. montana. The strains grew better in the presence of AsV than AsIII, which is generally less toxic. After seven days of incubation, each strain exhibited a different ability to form biofilms on glass surfaces in the presence of arsenic (25 ppm), with A. montana strain 27 being the most effective (86%) in the presence of AsIII, and A. coffeaeformis strain 26 (74%) with AsV. Photosynthetic pigment levels (chlorophyll a and c) differed in each biofilm, being poorly reduced by AsIII in strain 27, and by AsV in strain 26, indicating a species-specific response to arsenic stress. Our results indicated that Amphora species thriving in this environment can form biofilms as an As-resistance mechanism, maintain their levels of photosynthetic pigments, and support the functioning of the pond ecosystem, with A. montana being favored in the presence of AsIII, whereas A. coffeaeformis 26 in the presence of AsV. As producers of biofilms, these strains could be useful to develop new strategies to remediate arsenic pollution.

Diatom assemblage responses to multiple environmental stressors in a deep brackish plateau lake, SW China

Abstract:Eutrophication, climate change, water level fall, fish introduction, and salinity have been widely recorded to impact lake ecosystems around the world. However, the combined responding pattern in the lake ecosystem to the above multiple environmental stressors is not well understood. Here, we present diatom assemblage and geochemical indicators (total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorous (TP)) in lake sediment to investigate the long-term trends in the aquatic ecosystem in response to multiple environmental stressors in Lake Chenghai, a deep brackish lake located on Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, SW China, during the past 80 years. We identified 8 genera and 15 species of diatom reaching a relative abundance of ≥ 2% in at least one sample, with the dominant taxa such as Cyclotella rhomboideo-elliptica and Aulacoseira alpigena through the sediment core. There was a clear shift in the diatom community from oligotrophic species of C. rhomboideo-elliptica to eutrophic species such as Cyclotella meneghiniana and Cyclostephanos dubius becoming dominant since ca. 1998 CE. In addition, the changes in the fish introduction, water level, temperature, and salinity also resulted in the variation in abundance of planktonic and benthic diatoms. The increase in the abundance of diatoms of C. rhomboideo-elliptica since ca. 1986 CE may be related to the decline in water level and increasing fish production. For one thing, the decline in water level reduces the concentrations of benthic diatoms but increases the relative biomass of planktonic diatoms. For another, the increasing fish production results in the decrease in the zooplankton biomass, thus reducing the predation pressure on planktonic algae. Besides, some specific species such as C. meneghiniana may respond to the increased nutrient release and increased salinity since ca. 1998 CE. Combined, our findings demonstrate that trophic level is the main driver of diatom assemblage changes, and other environmental variables including water level, fish introduction, and climate warming also contribute to diatom community variation in this brackish plateau lake during the last 80 years.
Long-term dispersal of heavy metals in a catchment affected by historic lead and zinc mining

Abstract:PurposeThe Matylda catchment, in southern Poland, was polluted by the discharge of mine waters from a lead and zinc mine that inundated parts of a valley floor and caused the accumulation of metal-polluted sediments. After a partial reclamation of the mine site in the early 1980s, polluted sediments continue to accumulate on downstream floodplains and in fishponds. The aim of this study was to reconstruct the changes in metal dispersal during 100 years of mining and during the 40-year post-mining period and to propose a strategy for pollution mitigation in the area.Materials and methodsAnalyses of Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, Mn, Ca, Mg and Fe concentrations, speciation of heavy metals and mineralogical analyses were undertaken on overbank sediment cores and in stream sediments. Concentrations of the same elements and macro-ions soluble in stream waters were also determined.Results and discussionConcentrations of Zn, Cd and Pb in the sediment profiles vary between 40,000 and 55,000, 300 and 600 and 30,000 and 50,000 mg kg-1, respectively. Changes of metal concentrations and the stratigraphy of sediments from the floodplains, stream channels and fishponds suggest rapid changes of metal loads migrating downstream during both the mining and post-mining periods. Since the time of mine closure, fine-grained, mine-derived sediments (ca. 12 cm thick) have been the main source of pollution of post-mining sediments and surface waters. Closure of the mine was followed by a relatively short period of rapid redistribution of sediment-associated heavy metals in the stream channel. Since the 1980s, the floodplain and fishponds have received a constant supply of metals. It contrasts with the slow sediment accretion rate and a rapid decrease of metal concentrations in floodplain pools due to dilution by decomposed leaf litter. A fivefold increase of Cd content in waters over the 4.6 km reach of the Matylda stream indicates continuous leaching of this element from the contaminated valley floor.ConclusionsUnsuccessful mine site rehabilitation is due to leaching of mine-originated sediments dispersed over the valley bottom. However, the rate of metal remobilization over the last 40 years is low because of the small thickness and widespread anoxic conditions that prevail within both recent and mine-originated sediments and the alkaline pH of stream water, which reduces metal mobility. Distribution of the contaminated layer over a large area of the valley bottom precludes cost-efficient catchment rehabilitation.

Abstract:Brown coal remains an important energy source in Europe, including countries such as Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Greece. Open-pit mines disturb the environment in terms of air quality, hydrology, and chemical and biological transformations in rivers receiving mine waters. In the present study, we assessed the impact of mine waters from four brown coal open-pit mines on the contamination of river sediments. Chemical analysis included the quantification of 62 elements, including heavy metals (HMs) and rare earth elements (REEs). The contamination of sediments by HMs was evaluated using the contamination factor (CF), the pollution load index (PLI), and the Nemerow multi-factor index (PI). The potential toxic effects of HMs on aquatic organisms were assessed using the potential ecological risk index (PERI). Detailed analysis of chondrite-standardized concentrations of REEs was performed to describe the effects of mine water on their pattern in sediments. Cluster analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA) were employed to divide study sites into groups and to evaluate the combined effect of sediment texture and site location on HMs and REEs in sediments. The study showed that after mine water discharge, there is a decrease in HM and REE concentrations in sediments. The decrease in each element’s concentration in sites located 100 m downstream of the discharge was caused by washing out of the finest fractions of sediments by mine waters.

Abstract:Significant amounts of tailings and oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) are generated by bitumen extraction in the Alberta Oil Sands region. These by-products are potentially toxic to aquatic organisms and require remediation. The study site was Lake Miwasin, a pilot-scale pit lake integrated into broader reclamation efforts. It consists of treated tailings overlaid with blended OSPW and freshwater, exhibiting meromictic conditions and harboring aquatic communities. This study assessed the potential toxicity of Lake Miwasin surface water (LMW) and pore water (LMP) using saline-acclimated Cladocera, including lab strains of Daphnia magna and Daphnia pulex and native Daphnia species collected in brackish Humboldt Lake (HL) and Lake Miwasin (LM). The pore water evaluation was used to represent a worst-case water quality scenario during pond stratification. Additionally, the inclusion of native organisms incorporated site-specific adaptations and regional sensitivity into the toxicity evaluation. Our results showed that LMW did not display acute or chronic toxicity to lab species and native Daphnia sp. (HL). Conversely, LMP was acutely toxic to both lab species and native D. pulex (LM). In chronic tests (12 days exposure), LMP negatively affected reproduction in D. pulex (lab), with reductions in the number of offspring. Limited ability to acclimated organisms to the high salinity levels of LMP resulted in a shortened exposure duration for the chronic toxicity test. In addition to salinity being identified as a stressor in LMP, toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) phase I findings demonstrated that the observed toxicity for D. magna (lab) and D. pulex (LM, native) might be attributed to ammonia and metals in LMP. Further investigations are required to confirm the contributions of these stressors to LMP toxicity.

Abstract:Accelerated lakes eutrophication is one of the greatest challenges nowadays. To counteract its negative effects, large-scale restoration treatments are carried out worldwide. However, research in this field is mainly focused on the process effectiveness and there is a scarcity of studies concerning the impact of restoration treatments on water organisms and ecosystem homeostatsis. Our microcosm study presents the effects of a phosphorus coagulant (iron [III] chloride) on functional traits changes, oxidative stress and macro- and microelement stoichiometry disturbances in macrophyte Myriophyllum spicatum , a model species inhabiting eutrophic waters. Application of the coagulant to experimental vessels influenced the physicochemical and optical parameters of water and led to significant changes in biogeochemistry. Stoichiometric alterations were reflected by disturbances in the relative contents of macro- (C, N, P, Ca, Mg) and microelements (Fe, Zn, Cu, Co) and induced luxury consumption of available ions. Physicochemical and stoichiometric changes mutually exerted negative influence on M. spicatum functional traits. The parameters of oxidative stress remained at low levels, comparable to the untreated control whereas stoichiometric analysis revealed the activation of mechanisms responsible for minimizing low light stress. The ability of M. spicatum to maintain homeostasis of Cu and Co under simulated chemical water restoration was closely related to high concentrations of Fe and Zn ions, which simultaneously were not subjected to homeostasis control. Thus, chemical lake restoration treatments based on phosphorus coagulants are not as environmentally safe as previously considered and may have far-reaching consequences for the biogeochemical cycle and food web functioning.

From oligotrophy to dystrophy: the ontogeny of a humic lake in an extrazonal boreal taiga in Central Europe

Abstract:While humic lakes are common in northern Europe, in central Europe they are rare and our understanding of their ontogeny is insufficient. Here, we present the reconstruction of the development of a humic lake in the Tatra Mountains (Slovakia) over the last 8000 years using chironomids along with diatoms, pollen and non‐pollen palynomorphs. The compositional changes in aquatic proxies suggest three developmental stages. Since its formation the lake has been oligotrophic (phase 1), and its chemistry was controlled by subsurface waters rich in base cations buffering the effect of acid humic substances from forest and peat that were already present in the catchment. The beginning of the transition to phase 2 (~4400 cal a bp) is marked by simultaneous alterations in all proxies. Climate change combined with the local geochemistry was able to alter the limnological conditions supporting unique chironomid assemblages that have no analogues in recent Carpathian lakes. At ~3400 cal a bp the lake shifted to a phase when acidophilic/acidotolerant taxa indicate characteristic humic lake conditions (phase 3). Some chironomid taxa appearing ~2000 years ago for the first time indicate a dystrophic state in which the lake has remained until now. Human activities have been detected in the area since the Aeneolithic but had no direct influence on the lake.
