Abstract:Fibrous technologies (such as membranes, films, patches and filters) and their enabling engineering platforms have gained considerable interest over the last decade. In this study, novel fibrous constructs from a unique engineering platform were developed based on hybrid electrohydrodynamic (EHD) technology; incorporating functional and bioactive materials within random and aligned fibrous formulation geometries. Complex constructs were engineered using 3D printing (polycaprolactone, PCL, for sustained delivery) and electrospinning (polyvinylpyrrolidone, PVP, for rapid release) in an intercalating material layer-by-layer format using a side-by-side technological approach. Here, structure generation proceeded with deposition of ordered PCL fibers enabling well-defined void size and overall dimension, after which randomly spun PVP fibers formed a construct overcoat (as a membrane). Differences between polymer dissolution rate, hydrophilicity, mechanical properties and functional material hosting (and linked external auxiliary magnetic field trigger) provided opportunities to modulate antibiotic drug (tetracycline hydrochloride, TE-HCl) release. In vitro cell studies using human umbilical vein blood vessel cell line demonstrated device biocompatibility and Escherichia Coli (E. coli) was selected to demonstrate anti-bacterial function. Overall, a new hybrid engineering platform to prepare customizable and exciting multi-faceted drug release constructs is elucidated.

Abstract:Porous PVDF blend membranes with good hydrophilicity and a symmetric structure were prepared by the phase inversion method using amphiphilic brush-like copolymers, P(MMA-r-PEGMA), as hydrophilic additive and triethylphosphate (TEP) as solvent. P(MMA-r-PEGMA) was synthesized by radical polymerization in TEP. Then the obtained amphiphilic copolymer solution was mixed with PVDF and TEP to prepare the dope solution. The effects of P(MMA-r-PEGMA) content and coagulation composition on membrane morphologies were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results demonstrated that, even blended with amphiphilic copolymers, a symmetric structure can be formed. Hollow fiber membranes with a mainly symmetric structure were also fabricated. The dry hollow fiber membranes showed good hydrophilicity, high flux and good rejection performance because of their hydrophilic surface and pores wall.
Interconnected Porous Monolith Prepared Via UiO-66 Stabilized Pickering High Internal Phase Emulsion Template

Abstract:High internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templating offers an efficient approach to prepare 3D hierarchical porous metal-organic framework (MOF)-based monoliths. However, conventional poly-Pickering HIPEs synthesized from MOF-stabilized HIPEs have low permeability due to closed-cell structures, thus limiting their applications. Herein, interconnected porous MOF monoliths, prepared by adding a small amount of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as co-stabilizer into UiO-66 stabilized Pickering HIPE templates are reported. The morphology of the porous monoliths was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The pore size could be well controlled by varying the PVA concentration. A unique morphology, formed by an ice template, was clearly seen on the cell wall. The pores were thus interconnected. The mass transfer performance of the monoliths having different cell structures was investigated by CO2 adsorption. The interconnected porous structure significantly accelerated the CO2 adsorption process, as well as enhancing the saturated adsorption capacity.

Abstract:Poly high internal phase emulsion (PolyHIPE) monolith has attracted many attentions for easy preparation, precise control on its porous structure, and excellent properties. In many applications, however, post-modification is needed to introduce functional groups onto their surfaces in order to achieve specific separation ability, reactivity or absorptivity, etc. In the current work, we proposed one-pot interfacial polymerization method to achieve composite PolyHIPEs with functional surface in one pot. It was realized by three strategies in preparing typical polystyrene PolyHIPEs from water-in-oil (W/O) HIPE: (1) introducing water-soluble initiator of potassium persulfate (KPS) and monomer of acryl acid (AA) into aqueous phase under conventional HIPE polymerization, (2) introducing KPS and AA into aqueous phase under high internal phase emulsions via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (HIPE RAFT) living radical polymerization, and (3) employing reactive amphipathic MacroRAFT agent as surfactant. All these three strategies proved to be effective to generate a composite structure with different surface and bulk compositions. AA enrichment on the surface was verified by X-ray photoelectric energy spectrum (XPS) etching. Their effects on the morphology and mechanical properties were also studied.

Abstract:Macroporous materials polymerized from high internal phase emulsions (PolyHIPEs) possess well-defined interconnected porous structures and tunable device shapes. This provides interesting property characteristics well-suited for a variety of applications. However, such materials also demonstrate poor mechanical performances, which limit their potential use. As will be demonstrated, this results from the high surfactant content required by PolyHIPEs. Herein, a new approach is introduced for designing a highly efficient polymeric surfactant, which generates interconnected pores in PolyHIPEs through designing an incompatible surfactant and skeleton material. The surfactant also possesses a hyperbranched topology, which combines the strong amphipathy of small molecular surfactants and the nanosphere structure of Pickering emulsifiers to provide an excellent colloidal stability to HIPEs. A hyperbranched polyethylene having pendant sodium sulfonate groups (HBPE-SO3Na) was thus designed and synthesized via chain walking copolymerization of ethylene and 2-trimethylsilyloxyethyl acrylate followed by sulfonation. Stable HIPEs of styrene/divinylbenzene and water at a weight ratio of 1 to 5 were obtained with using HBPE-SO3Na. The polymerization of HIPEs produced interconnected macroporous polystyrenes (PSs) at a substantially lower surfactant content, for example, 0.5 wt % HBPE-SO3Na. The compressive Young's moduli of PolyHIPEs reached 104-111 MPa with 0.5-2 wt % HBPE-SO3Na, which is the first reported case of a PS-based PolyHIPE achieving its theoretical modulus. The PolyHIPE was used to support Au nanoparticles and embed in a column for oxidation of dimethylphenylsilane. A complete conversion of dimethylphenylsilanol was achieved with low column back pressure in a 50 h continuous reaction with no degradation of PolyHIPE integrity and mechanical property.
Wet‐spun porous fibers from high internal phase emulsions: Continuous preparation and high stretchability

Abstract:Although high internal phase emulsion (HIPE)-templating is promising to prepare macroporous materials (polyHIPEs) with controllable shapes and tuneable property, fibrous polyHIPEs with stretchability and their continuous preparation are still challenging. Here, we report the fabrication of polyHIPE fibers in a continuous manner through wet spinning of HIPEs. The successful fabrication of polyHIPE fibers depends on HIPE dispersed phase fractions, ammonia-catalyzed interfacial reaction and wet spinning. Dry polyHIPE fibers exhibit tunable diameters, hierarchically porous structures, high stability to temperature and to various solutions, and high stretchability (with a high tensile strain of 155%), which is hard to achieve for polyHIPEs. The polyHIPE fibers show enhanced uptakes to both water (14.4 ml g−1) and organic solvents (up to 26.3 ml g−1), and the amphiphilic swelling is rare for polyHIPEs. Moreover, the dry polyHIPE fibers show good thermal insulation, similar to that of cotton. Simple wet spinning, combining with HIPEs with tuneable composition, is promising for preparing various polyHIPE fibers for various potential applications.

Abstract:Recent explorations have shown potential drug delivery applications of random and aligned fibrous dosage forms (e.g. patches, dressings, films and inserts). In this study, novel controlled delivery dosage forms, comprising Janus fibers, are designed and fabricated using electrohydrodynamic (EHD) engineering. Model probe and active compound release is shown from dissimilar polymer systems (non-soluble and soluble in nature) which constitute towards Janus systems. Micron scaled aligned Janus fibers comprising polycaprolactone (PCL) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) were engineered to host rhodamine B and acriflavine, respectively. The impact of various operating parameters (e.g. flow rate, collector speed, working distance and applied voltage) on resulting mean fiber diameter and shape were optimized. Tensile strain decreased from 116.5 +/- 10.2% to 81.8 +/- 9.5% upon the inclusion of the model compounds, while both PCL/PVP and PCL/PVP/dyes samples exhibited similar tensile strength (similar to 0.65 MPa). FTIR analyses demonstrates PCL/PVP blend behavior and successful incorporation of rhodamine B and acriflavine. Acriflavine release from PCL fibers spanned over a 4-day period, and release of rhodamine B from PVP fibers was just over 6 h. The results indicate the EHD direct-jetting technique enables the precise construction of drug loaded and aligned fibers in a single-step with minimal excipient usage for potential customized drug delivery.

Abstract:Interconnected macroporous polymers were prepared by copolymerizing methyl acrylate (MA) via Pickering high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templates with modified silica particles. The pore structure of the obtained polymer foams was observed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Gas permeability was characterized to evaluate the interconnectivity of macroporous polymers. The polymerization shrinkage of continuous phase tends to form open pores while the solid particles surrounding the droplets act as barriers to produce closed pores. These two conflicting factors are crucial in determining the interconnectivity of macroporous polymers. Thus, poly-Pickering HIPEs with high permeability and well-defined pore structure can be achieved by tuning the MA content, the internal phase fraction, and the content of modified silica particles.

Abstract:High internal phase emulsion-templated polymer, named polyHIPE, has received widespread attention due to its great potential applications in many fields, such as separation, adsorption, heterogeneous catalysis, and sound absorption. The broad applicability is largely dependent on its adjustable opening structure. However, the question of why polyHIPE has an interconnected pore network structure is still to be discussed. Herein, different types (w/o, o/w, and o/o) of HIPEs are prepared and subsequently detected with laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM), and the polyHIPEs obtained by curing the HIPEs are characterized by SEM. The observations suggest that the interconnected pore formation is primarily due to the presence of the surfactant-rich phase in the film between the neighboring droplets in HIPE. The interconnected pores are generated by removal of the surfactant-rich domains in the postcuring procedure, and their sizes would be enlarged if the solubility of the surfactant in the continuous phase decreases in the curing stage.

Abstract:The hollow fiber membranes (HFMs) were widely used as tissue engineering scaffold The efficacy of the HFMs were affected by the porosity of the HFMs. In this study, the HFMs were prepared with dry-jet wet spinning method. In order to improve the performance of the HFMs, different spinning I parameters were applied to systematically investigating the effects of the fabrication conditions on the porosity of the HFMs. A 1-D diffusion model was set to numerically study the volume fraction distribution along the wall thickness. The porosity of the HFMs show a significant decrease in the porosity as the dope concentration increases. The morphology analyses showed that a higher dope concentration leads to a denser porous structure which result in a lower porosity. The results were discussed based on the phase inversion process and the I-D model was built to numerically analyze the polymer volume fraction distribution in the HFMs cross section. This study can help to better understand the effects of the different fabrication conditions on the morphology of the HFMs.

Abstract:In building construction, structural elements, such as lattice girders, are positioned specifically to support the mainframe of a building. This arrangement provides additional structural hierarchy, facilitating the transfer of load to its foundation while keeping the building weight down. We applied the same concept when synthesizing hierarchical open-celled macroporous polymers from high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templates stabilized by varying concentrations of a polymeric non-ionic surfactant from 0.75 to 20 w/vol %. These hierarchical poly(merized)HIPEs have multimodally distributed pores, which are efficiently arranged to enhance the load transfer mechanism in the polymer foam. As a result, hierarchical polyHIPEs produced from HIPEs stabilized by 5 vol % surfactant showed a 93% improvement in Young's moduli compared to conventional polyHIPEs produced from HIPEs stabilized by 20 vol % of surfactant with the same porosity of 84%. The finite element method (FEM) was used to determine the effect of pore hierarchy on the mechanical performance of porous polymers under small periodic compressions. Results from the FEM showed a clear improvement in Young's moduli for simulated hierarchical porous geometries. This methodology could be further adapted as a predictive tool to determine the influence of hierarchy on the mechanical properties of a range of porous materials.

Abstract:In this contribution, two well-defined amphiphilic block copolymers, i.e., polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene (PS-b-PEO-b-PS) and poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS) were synthesized through activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization. The as-prepared block copolymers with a similar molar mass successfully served as a stabilizer for preparing both styrene (St) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) containing HIPEs. The properties of HIPE and the effects of processing conditions (e.g., type and concentration of stabilizer, shearing rate, and aqueous phase volume) on the morphology of the resulting polyHIPEs were investigated by rheology and scanning electron microscopy analysis. The results show that the block copolymer stabilized HIPEs and the corresponding polyHIPEs possess the higher strength compared with the samples stabilized by span80. In addition, PS-based polyHIPEs from the block copolymer stabilized emulsion have the almost closed-cell structure, while PMMA-based polyHIPEs have the open-cell structure. Moreover, it is proven that the concentration of stabilizer plays a critical role in preparing PMMA-based polyHIPEs with high-porosity. It is believed that other functional polymeric porous monoliths can be readily prepared through HIPE templating by using the commonly known PEO-PS block copolymers without the sophisticated surfactant design.

Polymer Fibers with Hierarchically Porous Structure: Combination of High Temperature Electrospinning and Thermally Induced Phase Separation

Abstract:Isotactic polypropylene (iPP) fibers with hierarchically porous structure were successfully prepared by electrospinning at 200 °C combined with thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). Dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) are typical diluents for iPP in TIPS and are used as solvents for electrospinning. An ionic liquid was added to increase the solution conductivity, facilitate the electrospinning process, and maintain a stable cone-jet electrospinning mode. Theoretical calculation demonstrates that the jet cools rapidly, and phase separation takes place in the jet during its travelling path, as the system traverses across the phase diagram from the single phase region to the metastable region. For the iPP/DOP system, the surface morphology of fibers changes from aligned microvoids bridged by fibrils to a wrinkled structure with the addition of ionic liquid, as the ionic liquid inhibits iPP crystallization. The pore morphology can also be modulated by varying co-diluent composition. Open pores appear on the fiber surface and the cross-section varies from closed cellular pores to a bi-continuous structure with the increase of DBP content in the co-diluent, which clearly demonstrates the phase separation mechanism changes from solid–liquid to liquid–liquid phase separation. The as-spun porous fibers show more than a 100-fold increase in specific surface area compared with the non-porous ones. The main advantages of this method are the pore formation process has a precise mechanism and the pore morphology is well correlated with the phase diagram. Furthermore, it is readily extended to other polymers with TIPS. Highly porous poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) fibers can be easily prepared from PVDF/DBP solution with a 157-fold increase in specific surface area.

Abstract:Due to the controllable biodegradability and good biocompatibility, poly(lactide-co-glycolide acid) (PLGA) hollow fiber membranes (HFMs) have been successfully used for various biomedical applications, where the morphological and mechanical characteristics of HFMs are of crucial importance. This study focused on the effects of fabrication conditions on the morphology and mechanical performance of PLGA HFMs, which were manufactured by a phase inversion-based dry-jet wet spinning process. The cross-sectional morphology of HFMs was found to be significantly influenced by PLGA concentration of dope fluid. A 5-layered microstructure with macrovoids varied to a 6-layered microstructure with sponge-like microvoids when the PLGA concentration increased from 14% to 22%. Also, Young's modulus and compressive modulus of these PLGA HFMs were found to dramatically increase with PLGA concentration. To understand the underlying mechanism of morphological formation in PLGA HFMs, a physical mass transfer model was developed to describe the mutual diffusion process of PLGA/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/ water ternary system. This model was able to quantify the PLGA distribution within the HFM cross sections by considering the interaction terms of polymer/solvent/ nonsolvent in the governing equations, which was validated by the overall agreement between the experimental and numerical results. The present study should be helpful for understanding the formation mechanism of porous morphology during the phase inversion-based dry-jet wet spinning process, which may guide the optimization of PLGA HFMs for their applications as tissue engineered scaffolds.

Abstract:High-internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) were considered as an important functional material and have been the focus of intense development effort, but their fundamental attributes have hardly been altered at either the microcosmic or macroscopic level, which severely limits their practical applications in various areas. In this work, we report a general strategy for creating complex HIPEs that can form interfacial films at liquid interfaces. Double HIPEs and Janus HIPEs are both realized for the first time. They feature complex microscopic patterns with short-range anisotropy and exhibit non-Newtonian pseudoplastic flow behavior. By taking advantage of their response to a high-pH subphase, interfacial films can be successfully obtained, which are tunable in thickness and morphologies under compression. Abstract:Polymer porous microspheres with large specific surface areas and good fluidity have promising important applications in the biomedical field. However, controllable fabrication of porous microspheres with precise size, morphology, and pore structure is still a challenge, and phase separation caused by the instability of the emulsion is the main factor affecting the precise preparation of porous microspheres. Herein, a method combining the iso-density emulsion (IDE) template and microfluidics was proposed to realize the controllable preparation of polymer porous microspheres. The IDE exhibited excellent stability with minimal phase separation within 4 h, thus showing potential advantages in the large-scale preparation of porous microspheres. With the IDE template combined microfluidics technique and the use of a customized amphoteric copolymer, PEG-b-polycaprolactone, polycaprolactone (PCL) porous microspheres with porosity higher than 90% were successfully prepared. Afterwards, the main factors, including polymer concentration, water–oil ratio and homogenization time were investigated to regulate the pore structure of microspheres, and microspheres with different pore sizes (1–30 μm) were obtained. PCL porous microspheres exhibited comparable cell viability relative to the control group and good potential as cell microcarriers after surface modification with polydopamine. The modified PCL porous microspheres implanted subcutaneously in rats underwent rapid in vivo degradation and tissue ingrowth. Abstract:Combining emulsion templating with additive manufacturing enables the production of inherently porous scaffolds with multiscale porosity. This approach incorporates interconnected porous materials, providing a structure that supports cell ingrowth. However, 3D printing hierarchical porous structures that combine semi-micropores and micropores remains a challenging task. Previous studies have demonstrated that using a carefully adjusted combination of light absorbers and photoinitiators in the resin can produce open surface porosity, sponge-like internal structures, and a printing resolution of about 150 μm. In this study, we explored how varying concentrations of tartrazine (0, 0.02, 0.04, and 0.08 wt%) as a light absorber affect the porous structure of acrylate-based polymerized Medium Internal Phase Emulsions (polyMIPEs) fabricated via vat photopolymerization. Given the importance of a porous and interconnected structure for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, we tested cell behavior on these 3D-printed disk samples using MG-63 cells, examining metabolic activity, adhesion, and morphology. The 0.08 wt% tartrazine-containing 3D-printed sample (008T) demonstrated the best cell proliferation and adhesion. To show that this HIPE resin can be used to create complex structures for biomedical applications, we 3D-printed trabecular bone structures based on microCT imaging. These structures were further evaluated for cell behaviour and migration, followed by microCT analysis after 60 days of cell culture. This research demonstrates that HIPEs can be used as a resin to print trabecular bone mimics using additive manufacturing, which could be further developed for lab-on-a-chip models of healthy and diseased bone.

Abstract:Pickering high internal-phase emulsions (HIPEs) and porous materials derived from the Pickering HIPEs have received increased attention in various research fields. Nevertheless, nondegradable inorganic and synthetic stabilizers present toxicity risks, thus greatly limiting their wider applications. In this work, we successfully developed nontoxic porous materials through the Pickering HIPE-templating process without chemical reactions. The obtained porous materials exhibited appreciable absorption capacity to corn oil and reached the state of saturated absorption within 3 min. The Pickering HIPE templates were stabilized by gliadin-chitosan complex particles (GCCPs), in which the volume fraction of the dispersed phase (90%) was the highest of all reported food-grade-particle-stabilized Pickering HIPEs so far, further contributing to the interconnected pore structure and high porosity (>90%) of porous materials. The interfacial particle barrier (Pickering mechanism) and three-dimensional network formed by the GCCPs in the continuous phase play crucial roles in stabilization of HIPEs with viscoelastic and self-supporting attributes and also facilitate the development of porous materials with designed pore structure. These materials, with favorable biocompatibility and biodegradability, possess excellent application prospects in foods, pharmaceuticals, materials, environmental applications, and so on.
