Abstract:Development of Data Center based computing technology require energy efficient high-speed transmission links. This leads to optical amplification-free intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) systems with low complexity equalization compliant with IEEE standardized electrical interfaces. Switching from on-off keying to multi-level pulse amplitude modulation would allow to reduce lane count for next generation Ethernet interfaces. We characterize 106.25 Gbaud on-off keying, 4-level and 6-level pulse amplitude modulation links using two integrated transmitters: O-band directly modulated laser and C-band externally modulated laser. Simple feed forward or decision feedback equalizer is used. We demonstrate 106.25 Gbaud on-off keying links operating without forward error correction for both transmitters. We also show 106.25 Gbaud 4-level and 6-level pulse amplitude modulation links with performance below 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error threshold of 4.5 x 10(-3). Furthermore, for EML-based transmitter we achieve 106.25 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation performance below KP-FEC threshold of 2.2 x 10(-4). That shows that we can use optics to support (2x)100 Gbps Ethernet on single lambda at expense of simple forward error correction.

Abstract:Nonlinear impairment is one of the critical limits to enhancing the performance of high-speed communication systems. Traditional digital signal processing (DSP)-based nonlinear channel equalization schemes are influenced by limited bandwidth, high power consumption, and high processing latency. Optoelectronic reservoir computing (RC) is considered a promising optical signal processing (OSP) technique with merits such as large bandwidth, high power efficiency, and low training complexity. In this paper, optoelectronic RC was employed to solve the nonlinear channel equalization problem. A parallel optoelectronic RC scheme with a dual-polarization Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPol-MZM) is proposed and demonstrated numerically. The nonlinear channel equalization performance was greatly enhanced compared with the traditional optoelectronic RC and the Volterra-based nonlinear DSP schemes. In addition, the system efficiency was improved with a single DPol-MZM.

Abstract:The enormous traffic growth sets a stringent requirement to upgrade short-reach optical links to 1.6 TbE capacity in an economically viable way. The power consumption and latency in these links should be as low as possible, especially for high-speed computing. This is possible to achieve using high baudrate on-off keying links thanks to a better noise tolerance and a relaxed requirement on linearity for electronics and photonics. In this regard, we demonstrate a 200 Gbaud on-off keying link without any optical amplification using an externally modulated laser with 3.3 dBm of modulated output power operating at 1541.25 nm wavelength. We achieve transmission over 200 meters of single-mode fiber with performance below 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error correction threshold for each baudrate and all selection of modulation formats. We also show 108 Gbaud on-off keying link with superior performance without decision feedback equalizer up to 400 meters of single-mode fiber. In addition, we benchmark the short-reach optical link with 112 Gbaud four-level pulse amplitude modulation and 100 Gbaud six-level pulse amplitude modulation. For 108 Gbaud on-off keying and 112 Gbaud four-level pulse amplitude modulation, we can achieve an even lower bit error rate.

Abstract:Deterioration of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is an important challenge in ultra-long multi optical line system (OLS) optical transmission systems. The non-uniform gain and cascading of the Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) lead to SNR deterioration in transmission systems. In this paper, we propose two channel power equalization methods based on joint optimization of EDFA and Reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) configurations: 1) reinforcement learning (RL)-based channel power equalization (RL-PE) and 2) covariance matrix adaptive evolution strategy (CMA-ES) channel power equalization (CMA-PE). The simulation results indicate that the power equalization effect was improved by 1.9 dB through the CMA-PE method, while the RL-PE method led to a 1.5 dB improvement in an ultra-long 80-channel 7-OLS transmission system.

Abstract:We propose and model an optical communication scheme for short distance datacom links based on the distribution of information across a wide comb spectrum. This modulation format, orthogonal delay division multiplexing, allows the multiplexing of data streams from multiple modulators, as well as the deserialization and equalization of the data in the optical domain. A concrete communication system, that allows the transport of 400 Gb/s across a single CWDM channel with a single 80 GHz cutoff lithium niobate on insulator modulator, is modeled under consideration of all noise sources present in the system and its sensitivity to group velocity dispersion is analyzed. Data is deserialized and equalized at the receiver with a 5-tap optical equalizer. This communication architecture may provide a path forward to implement high-baud-rate signaling in short-reach optical links without requiring high-speed ADCs and electronic deserializers at the receiver, thus maintaining the in-package power consumption at manageable levels.

Abstract:Power unevenness, mainly induced by stimulated Raman scattering, has been a major problem in multi-band transmission systems, especially in the upcoming field-deployed 400 Gbit/s widened C band plus L band system for backbone long-haul and ultra-long-haul scenarios. To reduce the impact of power unevenness, we propose an automatic power optimization (APO) algorithm to guarantee reliable transmission for all channels, especially the channels at short wavelengths. The simulation results show that the power unevenness of output power after 5-span transmission in the C band is up to 11 dB before APO, while after APO is applied, it is greatly improved to less than 1.6 dB. To further investigate the performance of the APO scheme, we conduct a real-time 44 Tbit/s C+L transmission system over 1900 km G.654.E fiber utilizing 400 Gbit/s transponders. The experimental results show that the power unevenness has been effectively compensated from 12 dB to 4 dB in the entire 11 THz range, making the received optical signal-to-noise ratio relatively flat (3.4 dB). Moreover, the capacity and distance product of this system is 83.6 Pbit/s·km (44 Tbit/s × 1900 km), and to the best of our knowledge, this is a record capacity and distance product in the real-time single-mode fiber transmission system.

Abstract:A simple all-optical power equalization scheme based on a single two-section reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) is presented. Double optical path and non-uniform injection current density in the two sections easily saturate the RSOA and suppress pattern effect, thereby significantly reducing packet-to-packet power fluctuation while maintaining better signal quality. The mechanism of the two-section RSOA-based power equalizer is investigated and it is indicated that the two-section RSOA biased at proper current density functions as three cascaded SOAs, including a preamplifying SOA, a gain-saturated SOA and a third SOA. The performance dependence on driven current and structural parameters is also studied.

Abstract:In a high-speed coherent optical transmission system, typically the signals obtained at the receiver front-end are digitized using very high-speed ADCs and then processed in the digital domain to remove optical channel impairments. In this work, we show that these signals can instead be processed in the analog domain itself, which can significantly reduce the power consumption as well as the complexity of the receiver. The first all-analog adaptive equalizer for receivers of coherent dual-polarization optical links has been presented with its detailed architecture and measurement results. The proof-of-concept equalizer uses the constant modulus algorithm for blind adaptation of its weight coefficients to implement a 4x4 2-tap FIR filter in 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS technology. Its functionality is evaluated experimentally for 40 Gb /s data rate and 10 km standard single-mode fiber channel. This demonstration shows that the use of all-analog processing for short-reach data-center interconnects is feasible and is a much simpler solution than the use of the high-speed ADC+DSP based approach. Moreover, when implemented in advanced CMOS or FinFET technologies, the power consumption of the equalizer is expected to be significantly lower than the DSP based implementations in similar process technologies.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength multicasting has been experimentally demonstrated for 36 Gbit/s 16-quadrature amplitude modulation signals based on four-wave mixing processes in a silicon waveguide with multiple pumps. In our experiment, dual pumps are injected together with the signal into the waveguide and nine idlers are generated, involving five wavelength multicasting channels. Coherent detection and advanced digital signal processing are employed, and the recovered constellation diagrams of the multicasting idlers show a root-mean-square error vector magnitude degradation as small as 2.74%. The bit error rate (BER) results are measured for these multicasting idlers, and the power penalties are all lower than 0.96 dB at the BER of 3.8 x 10(-3) (corresponding to the forward error correction threshold). Abstract:In this letter, a novel scheme for module implementation of power equalization in wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) all-optical networks is proposed. The power equalization and the power amplification are united into one module and the node isolation principle is applied. The simulation shows that ours is more explicit and efficient than the traditional schemes. The larger number of cascaded nodes is permitted and the system performance (signal-to-noise ratio) can be kept without deterioration. Consequently, a feasible novel solution to power management in WDM all-optical networks is presented.

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) has been proved to be a successful technology recently in high speed and high spectrum-efficiency optical short-haul and access network, which enables high performances based on digital equalizations and compensations. In this paper, we investigate advanced DSP at the transmitter and receiver side for signal pre-equalization and post-equalization in an optical access network. A novel DSP-based digital and optical pre-equalization scheme has been proposed for bandwidth-limited high speed short-distance communication system, which is based on the feedback of receiver-side adaptive equalizers, such as least-mean-squares (LMS) algorithm and constant or multi-modulus algorithms (CMA, MMA). Based on this scheme, we experimentally demonstrate 400GE on a single optical carrier based on the highest ETDM 120-GBaud PDM-PAM-4 signal, using one external modulator and coherent detection. A line rate of 480-Gb/s is achieved, which enables 20% forward-error correction (FEC) overhead to keep the 400-Gb/s net information rate. The performance after fiber transmission shows large margin for both short range and metro/regional networks. We also extend the advanced DSP for short haul optical access networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and demonstrate a high speed multi-band CAP-WDM-PON system on intensity modulation, direct detection and digital equalizations. A hybrid modified cascaded MMA post-equalization schemes are used to equalize the multi-band CAP-mQAM signals. Using this scheme, we successfully demonstrates 550Gb/s high capacity WDM-PON system with 11 WDM channels, 55 sub-bands, and 10-Gb/s per user in the downstream over 40-km SMF.

Abstract:We demonstrate a low latency fiber channel distortion equalizer that implements mainly of the equalization calculations in the optical domain, based on an integrated photonic reservoir computing chip. We discussed the equalization effect of the equalizer under different dispersion noise and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) conditions. The bit error rate (BER) of the C-band with 25Gb/s on-off key (OOK) distorted signal in 25km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) has been reduced by 3 orders of magnitude. By optimizing weights, this equalizer can adapt to link impairments. It can effectively equalize the distorted signals at data rates of 10–40 Gb/s over 25km in SSMF transmission. Furthermore, it can efficiently equalize the impaired signals after 5-40km SSMF transmission at a signal rate of 25Gb/s.
Research on loss-imbalance equalization of AWG-based OADM

Abstract:Integrated-Optic Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG) NxN multiplexers are a new focus in All Optical Networks (AON) for their unique N input and N output geometry and have been used in a variety of applications. All AWGs fabricated so far have shown loss-imbalance among FDM channels due to non-umiform diffraction efficiency. It is fatal in AON because it will accumulate after each AWG. Uniform diffraction efficiency obtained in ideal design limit is one ideal solution, but it is nearly impossible to achieve the ideal limit with present fabrication technology. This paper applies a new method-shifted connection-on equalizing loss-imbalance of AWG-based OADM. The basic idea is simple and the result is of great significance. We theoretically analyze the effect of 8 various shifted configurations and predict each effectiveness. We find the relationship between the loss-imbalance and shift delta is a quadratic equation We extend the method to cascaded AWGs. Also we deduce the limit of the equalization which is independent of m and AWG's loss-imbalance parameter alpha, beta. Experiment results accord with theory very well and show that we successfully reduce a worst case loss-imbalance (9.5 dB) to a best case loss-imbalance (3dB) in a single AWG-based OADM. We find that equalization configuration with foldback path is superior to loopback path configurations, when no more than Nn wavelengths are used. The method is very simple and effective in equalizing AWG's loss-imbalance and the idea can be applied to other equalizations in AON.
Mitigating Nonlinear Penalty Induced from a Low-Speed Optical Supervisory Channel on Coherent Signals.

Abstract:With the increasing signal rates of a long-haul backbone dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) transmission system, e.g., from 100 Gb/s to 400 Gb/s and even to 800 Gb/s, optical path impairments simultaneously become more severe. Harmful factors being formerly insignificant become noticeable, e.g., nonlinear phase noise (NPN) on main DWDM channels induced by the cross-phase modulation (XPM) from the low-speed optical supervisory channel (OSC). Field trials show that a greater than 5.13-dB penalty can be observed on the shortest channel of 400G DP-16QAM-PCS over G.654.E links, which greatly degrades the overall transmission performance and limits the maximum reach. In this paper, we propose a dual-OSC structure with opposite signals to compensate for performance degradation caused by OSC-induced NPN. This method involves no extra digital signal processing (DSP), which is not only simple but also applicable for universal signal rates. By experimental demonstration, a 1.32-dB gain in Q (dB) for 200G DP-16QAM transmission over 1618-km G.652.D can be done, almost achieving the same performance as the no OSC case.

Abstract:Increased traffic demands globally and in particular in short-reach links in data centers will require optical communication systems to continue scaling at an accelerated pace. Nevertheless, energy constraints start to limit the bit rate that can be practically transmitted over optical systems both at the shortest distances in data centers and at the longest distances in ultra-long submarine links. Short-reach links in data centers face strict constraints on power consumption, size, and cost, which will demand low-power solutions that scale to bit rates beyond 100 Gbit/s per wavelength, while accommodating increased losses due to longer fiber plant, multiplexing of more wavelengths, and possibly optical switching. At the longest distances, submarine optical cables longer than about 5,000 km face energy constraints due to power feed limits at the shores, which restricts the electrical power available to the undersea optical amplifiers, ultimately limiting the optical power and throughput per fiber. This dissertation presents strategies to mitigate these limitations. For short-reach links in data centers, we propose low-power coherent receiver architectures that completely avoid high-speed analog-to-digital converters and digital signal processors. For long-haul submarine links, we demonstrate how optimizing the channel power allocation under a constraint on the amplifier power maximizes the information-theoretic capacity per fiber.

Transmit Power Optimization in Optical Coherent Transmission Systems: Analytical, Simulation, and Experimental Results

Abstract:In this paper, we propose to use the discretized version of the so-called Enhanced Gaussian Noise (EGN) model to estimate the non-linearity effects of fiber on the performance of optical coherent and uncompensated transmission (CUT) systems. By computing the power of non-linear interference noise and considering optical amplifier noise, we obtain the signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio and achievable rate of CUT. To allocate the power of each CUT channel, we consider two optimization problems with the objectives of maximizing minimum SNR margin and achievable rate. We show that by using the discretized EGN model, the complexity of the introduced optimization problems is reduced compared with the existing optimization problems developed based on the so-called discretized Gaussian Noise (GN) model. In addition, the optimization based on the discretized EGN model leads to a better SNR and achievable rate. We validate our analytical results with simulations and experimental results. We simulate a five-channel coherent system on OptiSystem software, where a close agreement is observed between optimizations and simulations. Furthermore, we measured SNR of commercial 100Gbps coherent transmitter over 300 km single-mode fiber (SMF) and non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZDSF), by considering single-channel and three-channel coherent systems. We observe there are performance gaps between experimental and analytical results, which is mainly due to other sources of noise such as transmitter imperfection noise, thermal noise, and shot noise, in experiments. By including these sources of noise in the analytical model, the gaps between analytical and experimental results are reduced.

Abstract:Chromatic dispersion (CD) has been considered as a significant issue that needs to he addressed over the past decades. Nowadays, as the bandwidth of radio frequency signals has expanded to multi-gigahertz, CD becomes increasingly troublesome for some wideband signals such as linear frequency modulated waveform (LFMW), which requires a flat amplitude response and a linear phase response. In this paper, we first investigate the CD-induced amplitude distortion and phase distortion that a wideband signal will suffer in traditional double-sideband (DSB) modulated and single-sideband (SSB) modulated radio-over-fiber (RoF) links with an emphasis on the LFMW. The detrimental impacts of the CD-induced distortions are subsequently discussed based on the pulse compression performance. Then, a two-tap microwave photonics equalizer (MPE) model is proposed and its operating principle for overcoming the CD-induced distortions is demonstrated. Based on the model, we design the MPE, which is mainly composed of an integrated dual-polarization dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator and a differential group delay module. In the proofof-concept experiment, the RoF link utilizing the proposed MPE is built, and a 1-10 GHz LFMW is transmitted over the 66.3-km single-mode fiber. Thanks to the MPE, both CD-induced amplitude distortion and phase distortion are successfully compensated. Pulse compression results show that the pulse, compared with the signal transmitted in the SSB-haled link.

With the support of this algorithm, the signal damage for four-level pulse amplitude modulation signal (PAM-4) is compensated, which is caused by device bandwidth limitation and dispersion during transmission in C-band intensity modulation direct detection (IM-DD) fiber system. Experiments have been carried out to demonstrate that PAM-4 signals can transmit over 2 km in standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) based on a 30 GHz Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). The bit error rate ( BER ) can reach the threshold of hard decision-forward error correction (HD-FEC) ( BER =3.8×10 −3 ) and its sensitivity is reduced by 2 dBm compared with traditional feedforward equalization (FFE). Meanwhile, the algorithm complexity is greatly reduced by 55%, which provides an effective theoretical support for the commercial application of the algorithm.
