Abstract:Despite considerable progress in promoting infected diabetic wound healing, the complex pathological characteristics urge the development of injectable supersoft hydrogels with synergistic antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and angiogenic functions. Herein, we propose a versatile strategy for preparing injectable supersoft DNA hydrogel dressings to promote the healing of bacteria-infected diabetic wounds. These hydrogels were formed through the coassembly of DNA chains and magnesium pyrophosphate (Mg2PP) during the rolling-circle amplification (RCA) process, followed by subsequent loading of the antioxidant curcumin and antibiotic ciprofloxacin through specific intermolecular interactions between DNA and drugs. The hydrogels can not only avoid the abrupt drug leakage and unpredictable pharmacokinetics compared to conventional in situ formed injectable hydrogels but also inhibit bacterial growth with significantly reduced antibiotic dosage. More importantly, the hydrogels scavenge a broad spectrum of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and modulate the inflammatory wound microenvironment via the synergistic effects of DNA and curcumin. In addition, the wound microenvironment facilitates the release of magnesium ions from the DNA hydrogel dressing, which in turn further accelerates the skin angiogenesis. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents a novel injectable DNA hydrogel dressing for effective management of infected diabetic wound regeneration, which can be extended to prepare a wide range of multifunctional injectable DNA hydrogels for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Currently, diabetic infectious wound treatments remain a significant challenge for regenerative medicine due to the unicity of clinical dressings, which lack systemic multifunctional wound dressings with high absorbability, customizable shape, rapid self-healing, guiding tissue regeneration, and restoring physiological functions. Here, a multifunctional DNA hydrogel is conveniently obtained through grafting DNA units and polyethyleneimine dynamic cross-linking and doped heating function black phosphorus quantum dots. The obtained DNA hydrogel features excellent exudate absorption performance, adjustable heating ability, mechanical behavior, self-healing ability, writability, tissue adhesion, and antibacterial properties. The incorporation of procyanidin B2 (OPC B2) endows the DNA hydrogels with renowned scavenging free radicals and antioxidant properties. Furthermore, the DNA hydrogel dressing can promote the transformation of macrophages from pro-inflammatory M1 into repairing M2 phenotype, keeping the wound in a stable remodeled state. Astonishingly, the DNA hydrogel dressing can activate neurons to transform into a repair state, accelerating skin nerve regeneration and angiogenesis. Beyond that, it can recruit myeloid cells to activate the adaptive immune response, enhancing the ability of DNA hydrogel dressing to promote tissue regeneration, thereby promoting hair follicle and hair regeneration. Therefore, this advanced collaborative strategy provides an effective method for cascade management of clinical guided tissue regeneration.

Abstract:Multidrug-resistant bacteria-infected refractory wounds are increasingly imposing a heavy burden on public health. Wound dressing materials with effective antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties for accelerated wound healing need to be developed urgently. Herein, we constructed a multifunctional DNA hydrogel as an effective wound dressing material based on programmable DNA self-assembly. The precise base-pairing between sticky ends enables DNA building blocks to hydrogel at the wound site within seconds. Cytosine (C)-silver ion (Ag + )-C bridges of C–C mismatches complexing with Ag + improve the mechanical properties of the hydrogel, make the hydrogel durable, and enable a sustained release property, thereby enhancing the broad-spectrum antibacterial effects both in vitro and in vivo . Moreover, the fractalkine aptamer carried by the hydrogel can recruit and passively release endogenous chemokines to recruit M2 macrophages via G-coupled protein receptors, because of which the inflammatory process prematurely changes to the proliferative process. In vivo experiments revealed that a dual-functionalized DNA hydrogel dressing significantly accelerated skin tissue regeneration and wound closure in a methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus ( MRSA ) infected rat model. In general, we present a simple, injectable and multifunctional DNA hydrogel dressing for accelerated wound healing that possesses exceptional applicability with great clinical translation potential.

Abstract:Diabetic ulcerative wounds can lead to neuropathy and microangiopathy, accompanied with a series of symptoms, such as tissue edema, acid accumulation, hypoxic ischemia, and causalgia numbness. Although recruiting endogenous stem cells can be expected to replace clinical skin transplantation, whether stem cells can survive and implement the paracrine effect in a complex microenvironment is still a thorny problem. Here, we designed a multifunctional DNA hydrogel integrated system to recruit endogenous stem cells to promote wound healing and regeneration and reduce pathological pain. The polypeptide E7-DNA linker and Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) endow the DNA hydrogels with the ability to recruit endogenous stem cells and ensure the viability of stem cells in a harsh environment. Interestingly, due to its unique biological properties, the DNA hydrogel acts as a power station that can effectively activate endogenous stem cells to implement paracrine effect. Additionally, hypoxia-ischemia microenvironment and HGF cooperate to induce stem cells to differentiate into vascular endothelial cells. Beyond that, the DNA gel constructed a humanized and rationalized microenvironment with antioxidant and analgesic properties. Therefore, the DNA hydrogel dressing exerts its inherent multifunctional properties to promote that macrophage transformation, angiogenesis, and neurogenesis. The DNA hydrogel system opens the cascade mode of comprehensively effective treatment of diabetes wounds and further drives the in-depth study of the endogenous survival and repair mechanism in clinical transformation.

Abstract:Impaired diabetic wound healing is associated with the persistence of chronic inflammation and excessive oxidative stress, which has become one of the most serious clinical challenges. Wound dressings with anti‐inflammatory and ROS‐scavenging properties are desirable for diabetic wound treatment. In this study, a shape‐adaptable, biodegradable, biocompatible, antioxidant and immunomodulatory IL‐33‐cytogel was developed by encapsulating IL‐33 into physically crosslinked DNA hydrogels and used as wound dressings to promote diabetic wound healing. The porous microstructures and biodegradable properties of the IL‐33‐cytogel ensured the local sustained‐release of IL‐33 in the wound area, where the sustained‐release of IL‐33 was maintained for at least 7 days. IL‐33‐cytogel could induce local accumulation of group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) and regulatory T cells (Tregs), as well as M1‐to‐M2 transition at the wound sites. Additionally, the antioxidant and biocompatible characteristics of DNA hydrogels promoted the scavenging of intracellular ROS without affecting cell viability. As a result, local inflammation in the diabetic wound area was resolved upon IL‐33‐cytogel treatment, which was accompanied by improved granulation tissue regeneration and accelerated wound closure. This study demonstrates a promising strategy in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine by incorporating DNA hydrogels and cytokine immunotherapy for promoting diabetic wound healing. Abstract:Abstract The treatment of diabetic wounds remains a major clinical challenge owing to bacterial infection, defects in angiogenesis, and the corresponding inhibition of cell activity and extracellular matrix deposition. In this study, a core-shell-type nanosystem was developed using graphdiyne (GDY) nanoparticles covered with gelatin to investigate its effects on diabetic wound healing. The nanoparticles were loaded with transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) via electrostatic self-assembly to promote angiogenesis and cell migration. The photothermal effects of GDY nanoparticles were applied to achieve controllable drug release and antibacterial properties. This nanosystem could rapidly release TGF-β after irradiation by near-infrared rays (NIR) without damaging its biological activities. The associated photothermal antibacterial activity was observed after 30 seconds irradiation of nanoparticles, and the temperature was set at a safe range (<49.6 °C). Besides, the gels possessed good biocompatibility and promoted cell migration in vitro. After implantation, the hydrogels group showed a higher wound healing rate than the control group in diabetic wound mouse models after 14 days and exhibited evident tissue regeneration, including angiogenesis and extracellular matrix deposition. This study presents a method for fabricating antibacterial wound dressings and an effective NIR-response strategy for designing drug-delivery nanosystems loaded with cellular factors.

Abstract:It remains challenging to cure chronic diabetic wounds due to its' harsh microenvironment and poor tissue regeneration ability. At present, bacteria elimination, inflammatory response suppression and angiogenesis orderly render an important paradigm for chronic diabetic wound treatment. Herein, smart-responsive multifunctional hydrogels were developed to improve chronic diabetic wound healing, which could quickly respond to the acidic environment of the diabetic wound site and mediate multistage sequential delivery of silver and curcumin-loaded polydopamine nanoparticles (&Cur NPs) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). &Cur NPs and VEGF endowed the hydrogels with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and angiogenesis performances, respectively. The in vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed that our multistage drug delivery hydrogels could effectively eliminate bacteria, relieve inflammatory response, and induce angiogenesis, hence accelerating the closure of chronic diabetic wounds. In conclusion, we highlighted the importance of multistage manipulation in wound healing and offered a combinatorial therapeutic strategy to sequentially deliver drugs exactly aiming at the dynamic wound healing stages.

Brain-tissue accumulation of fluorescent age pigments in four poeciliid fishes (cyprinodontiformes) and the estimation of "biological age".

Abstract:The concept of an intrinsic "biological age" or "physiological age" is very important in comparative ecological and evolutionary studies, but its implementation has been problematic. Although many authors have discussed the importance of intrinsic measures of age over the past 75 years, only Reiss (1989 ) has proposed an operational definition in terms of cumulative metabolism; however, Reiss' measure cannot be easily applied to assessing the age of individual organisms. Measurement of the level of accumulation of fluorescent age pigments (particularly lipofuscins) in post-mitotic tissues, which seems to occur at a rate proportional to cumulative metabolism, in principle provides a mechanism for estimating the biological age of individual organisms. This study has shown that brain-tissue FAP levels vary in direct proportion to chronological age and body size within four species of poeciliid fishes, and has documented interspecific differences in rate of accumulation of fluorescent age pigments, differences that seem to be a function of the degrees of relatedness. Rather than proposing that FAP level by itself be used as a measure of biological age, however, I propose that it be used in conjunction with other estimates, such as chronological age and body size, to derive a composite "age factor."

Abstract:Wound healing in diabetic patients presents a significant challenge due to delayed inflammatory responses, which obstruct subsequent healing stages. In response, we have developed a progressive, layer-by-layer responsive hydrogel, specifically designed to meet the dynamic requirements of diabetic wounds throughout different healing phases. This hydrogel initiates with a glucose-responsive layer formed by boronate ester bonds between 4-arm-poly (ethylene glycol) succinimidyl glutarate (4arm-PEG-SG) and 3-aminophenylboronic acid. This configuration ensures precise control over the physicochemical properties, facilitating accurate drug release during the healing process. Furthermore, we have incorporated an active pharmaceutical ingredient ionic liquid (API) composed of diclofenac and L-carnitine. This combination effectively tackles the solubility and stability issues commonly associated with anti-inflammatory drugs. To further refine drug release, we integrated matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9)-sensitive gelatin microcapsules, ensuring a controlled release and preventing the abrupt, uneven drug distribution often seen in other systems. Our hydrogel's rheological properties closely resemble human skin, offering a more harmonious approach to diabetic wound healing. Overall, this progressive layer-by-layer responsive wound management system, which is a safe, efficient, and intelligent approach, holds significant potential for the clinical treatment of diabetic wounds. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The two main problems of diabetic wounds are the long-term infiltration of inflammation and the delayed repair process. In this experiment, a glucose-responsive hierarchical drug delivery system was designed to intelligently adjust gel properties to meet the needs of inflammation and repair stage of wound healing, accelerate the transformation of inflammation and repair stage, and accelerate the process of repair stage. In addition, in order to achieve accurate drug release in anti-inflammatory layer hydrogels and avoid sudden drug release due to poor solubility of anti-inflammatory small molecule drugs, we constructed a ionic liquid of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API-ILs) using diclofenac and L-carnitine as raw materials. It was wrapped in MMP-9 enzyme active gelatin microcapsule to construct a double-reaction anti-inflammatory layer gel to achieve accurate drug release. These findings highlight the potential of our system in treating diabetic wounds, providing a significant advance in wound treatment.

Abstract:Diabetic wound usually accompanied by adverse factors such as hyperglycemia, oxidative stress damage, and inflammatory response is a typical refractory chronic wound. An insufficient regulation of the wound microenvironment is the limiting factor of diabetic wound healing. A drug-loaded micelle is a potential material for the treatment of diabetic wounds. Herein, an injectable, self-healable, and multiresponsive hydrogel (hydrogel@MIC&bFGF) was developed for the integrated diabetic wound therapy by a facile double-injection strategy. Meanwhile, the anti-inflammatory acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA) from a medicinal plant loaded in the hyaluronic acid-based micelles (MIC@AKBA) was encapsulated in the hydrogel along with basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF). Hydrogel@MIC&bFGF had integrated rheology properties, antioxidant properties, and multiresponse abilities that realized the sustained release of AKBA and bFGF to treat inflammation and promote wound healing in response to glucose, reactive oxygen species, and an acidic environment. In vitro and in vivo experiments substantiated that hydrogel@MIC&bFGF showed the desired therapeutic effects for the treatment of full-thickness skin defects in diabetic rats, which promoted wound healing by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress while accelerating angiogenesis. This study provides a potential strategy for drug-loaded hydrogels for diabetic wound treatment.

Abstract:Fabricating injectable hydrogel with multifunctions that matchs the highly ordered healing process of skin regeneration has greatly desired in treatment of chronic diabetic wounds. Herein, a pH/reactive oxygen species (ROS) dual responsive injectable glycopeptide hydrogel based on phenylboronic acid-grafted oxidized dextran and caffeic acid-grafted ε-polylysine was constructed, which exhibited inherent antibacterial and antioxidant capacities. The mangiferin (MF) with the ability to promote angiogenesis was encapsulated into pH-responsive micelles (MIC). Subsequently, diclofenac sodium (DS) with anti-inflammatory activities and MIC@MF were embedded into the hydrogel. The hydrogel possessed good biodegradability, stable rheological property and self-healing ability, and could realize the spatiotemporal delivery of DS and MF. The in vitro and in vivo data showed that the hydrogel was biocompatible with effective anti-infection, anti-oxidation and anti-inflammation at early stages, then further promoted angiogenesis and accelerated wound repairing. Collectively, this novel glycopeptide hydrogel provides a facile and effective strategy for chronic diabetic wound repairing.

Abstract:Engineering therapeutic angiogenesis in impaired tissues is critical for chronic wound healing. Materials can be engineered to deliver specific biological cues that enhance angiogenesis. However, currently available materials have limitations for use in angiogenesis engineering since the complex inflammation environment of wounds requires spatiotemporal control. Immune cells are the central component of wound microenvironment and orchestrate immune responses to wound healing. This study presents a novel approach of using a delivery system comprising living Lactococcus, incorporated in a heparin-poloxamer thermoresponsive hydrogel, designed to bioengineer the wound microenvironment and enhance the angiogenesis in a highly dynamic-temporal manner. The living system can produce and protect vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to increase proliferation, migration, and tube formation of endothelial cells, as well as secrete lactic acid to shift macrophages toward an anti-inflammatory phenotype, resulting in successful angiogenesis in diabetic wounds. Further, the delivery system confines the bacterial population to wounds, thereby minimizing the risk of systemic toxicities. Therefore, this living hydrogel system can be harnessed for safe and efficient delivery of therapeutics that drive the wound microenvironment toward rapid healing and may serve as a promising scaffold in regenerative medicine.

Ultrasound-Responsive HBD Peptide Hydrogel with Antibiofilm Capability for Fast Diabetic Wound Healing

Abstract:Despite advancements in therapeutic agents for diabetic chronic wounds, challenges such as suboptimal bioavailability, intricate disease milieus, and inadequate delivery efficacy have impeded treatment outcomes. Here, ultrasound-responsive hydrogel incorporated with heparin-binding domain (HBD) peptide nanoparticles is developed to promote diabetic wound healing. HBD peptide, derived from von Willebrand Factor with angiogenic activity, are first engineered to self-assemble into nanoparticles with enhanced biostability and bioavailability. Ultrasound responsive cargo release and hydrogel collapses are first verified through breakage of crosslinking. In addition, desired antioxidant and antibacterial activity of such hydrogel is observed. Moreover, the degradation of hydrogel under ultrasound stimulation into smaller fragments facilitated the deeper wound penetration of ≈400 µm depth. Complete wound closure is observed from diabetic mice with chronic wounds after being treated with the proposed hydrogel. In detail, in vivo studies revealed that hydrogels loaded with HBD peptide nanoparticles increased the levels of angiogenesis-related growth factors (VEGF-A, CD31, and α-SMA) to effectively accelerate wound repair. Overall, this study demonstrates that ultrasound-responsive HBD peptide hydrogel provides a synergistic therapeutic strategy for external biofilm elimination and internal effective delivery for diabetic wounds with biofilm infection.

Abstract:As the incidence of diabetes increases, its complication, diabetic foot ulcers, has become the main type of clinically chronic refractory wounds. Due to the hyperglycemic microenvironment of the diabetic wound, which leads to vascular defects and bacterial growth, the therapeutic effect of wound dressings lacking strategic design is relatively limited. In this study, we designed an injectable, "self-healing", and glucose-responsive multifunctional metal-organic drug-loaded hydrogel (DG@Gel) for diabetic wound healing. The functionalized hydrogel was prepared by phase-transfer-mediated metallo-nanodrugs, which were made by co-assembling zinc ions, organic ligands, and a small-molecule drug, deferoxamine mesylate (DFO), and the programmed loading of glucose oxidase (GOX). When injected into a diabetic wound, the GOX in DG@Gel changed the hyperglycemic wound microenvironment by decomposing excess glucose into hydrogen peroxide and glucuronic acid, which decreased the pH of the wound site. The low pH promoted the release of zinc ions and DFO, which exhibited synergistic antibacterial and angiogenesis activity for diabetic wound repair. In vitro experiments revealed the antibacterial activity and the cell proliferation, migration, and tube formation ability of DG@Gel. Moreover, in vivo experiments showed that DG@Gel can induce re-epithelialization, collagen deposition, and angiogenesis during wound healing in diabetic mice with good biocompatibility and biodegradability. The results suggest that this hydrogel is a promising innovative dressing for the treatment of diabetic wounds. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Diabetic ulcers, as one of the main types of chronic refractory wounds, are not treated effectively in the clinic due to a lack of strategic approach. In this study, we designed a glucose-responsive multifunctional metal-organic drug-loaded hydrogel (DG@Gel), which can change the hyperglycemic wound microenvironment by decomposing excess glucose into hydrogen peroxide and glucuronic acid. This in turn promoted the release of zinc ions and deferoxamine mesylate (DFO) in the hydrogel, which exhibited synergistic antibacterial and angiogenic activity for diabetic wound repair. Furthermore, the DG@Gel exhibited good biocompatibility and biodegradability in vivo. In general, this innovative strategy design may have great application potential in the treatment of various chronic wounds.

Enhancing diabetic wound healing through anti-bacterial and promoting angiogenesis using dual-functional slow-release microspheres-loaded dermal scaffolds

Abstract:Bacterial infections and the degeneration of the capillary network comprise the primary factors that contribute to the delayed healing of diabetic wounds. However, treatment modalities that cater to effective diabetic wounds healing in clinical settings are severely lacking. Herein, a dual-functional microsphere carrier was designed, which encapsulates polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) or recombinant human vascular endothelial growth factor (rhVEGF) together. The in vitro release experiments demonstrated that the use of the microspheres ensured the sustained release of the drugs (PHMB or rhVEGF) over a period of 12 days. Additionally, the integration of these controlled-release microspheres into a dermal scaffold (DS-PLGA@PHMB/rhVEGF) imbued both antibacterial and angiogenic functions to the resulting material. Accordingly, the DS-PLGA@PHMB/rhVEGF scaffold exhibited potent antibacterial properties, effectively suppressing bacterial growth and providing a conducive environment for wound healing, thereby addressing the drawbacks associated with the susceptibility of rhVEGF to deactivation in inflammatory conditions. Additionally, the histological analysis revealed that the use of the DS-PLGA@PHMB/rhVEGF scaffold accelerated the process of wound healing by inhibiting inflammatory reactions, stimulating the production of collagen formation, and enhancing angiogenesis. This provides a novel solution for enhancing the antibacterial and vascularization capabilities of artificial dermal scaffolds, providing a beacon of hope for improving diabetic wound healing.

Abstract:Bacterial infection can cause chronic nonhealing wounds, which may be a great threat to public health. It is highly desirable to develop an injectable wound dressing hydrogel with multifunctions including self‐healing, remodeling, antibacterial, radical scavenging ability, and excellent photothermal properties to promote the regeneration of damaged tissues in clinical practice. In this work, dopamine‐modified gelatin (Gel‐DA) is employed for the first time as a biotemplate for enhancing the biomineralization ability of gelatin to synthesize dopamine‐modified gelatin@Ag nanoparticles (Gel‐DA@Ag NPs). Further, the prepared Gel‐DA@Ag NPs with antioxidant activity and near‐infrared (NIR) laser irradiation synergistic antibacterial behavior are fixed in the guar gum based hydrogels through the formation of borate/didiol bonds to possess remolding, injectable, and self‐healing performance. In addition, the multifunctional hydrogels can completely cover the irregular wound shape to prevent secondary injury. More importantly, these hydrogel platforms under NIR can significantly accelerate wound healing with more skin appendages like hair follicles and blood vessels appearing. Therefore, it is expected that these hydrogels can serve as competitive multifunctional dressings in biomedical field, including bacteria‐derived wound infection and other tissue repair related to reactive oxygen species overexpression. A multifunctional injectable “all in one” hydrogel dressing is developed by enhancing biomineralization. In particular, the dressing can not only cover irregular wounds perfectly but also has an excellent synergistic antibacterial characteristic (release of silver nanoparticles and photothermal therapy). Importantly, the organic and inorganic hybrid multifunctional hydrogel with NIR can significantly accelerate wound healing as proven in vivo.

Abstract:Deoxyribonucleic acid hydrogel microneedles combined with double bionics and Chinese paper‐cutting technology have excellent stability, skin penetration, clamping, large deformation, tissue adhesion, and antibacterial properties. The loaded extracellular vesicle endows the system with immune regulation and activation pathways, thereby reducing pathological pain and promoting angiogenesis, neurogenesis, and tissue regeneration. Due to the high blood glucose and low oxygen environment in diabetes wounds, complex pathological problems arise, such as failure to upregulate healing factors, biological barriers generation, microvascular lesions, and skin neuropathy. Inspired by nature and traditional Chinese paper‐cutting technology, polypeptide deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) hydrogel microneedles (MNs) (P‐DNA gel MNs) are prepared. The obtained P‐DNA gel MNs possess optimized structure and large deformability, providing excellent clamping, stability, skin penetration, large deformation, tissue adhesion, and antibacterial properties. By incorporating extracellular vesicles (EVs) extracted under hypoxia (H‐EVs‐hypoxia), P‐DNA gel MNs can regulate tissue microenvironment, scavenge free radicals, and reduce inflammation. Notably, P‐DNA gel MNs integration system activates immune regulation and beneficial pathways, promoting neurogenesis and angiogenesis, reducing pathological pain, and achieving high‐quality healing. Overall, P‐DNA gel MNs system presents a fundamental mechanism for clinical transformation in treating diabetes wounds.

Abstract:In contrast to the classical notion of an increasing biodiversity from the poles to the equator, a number of studies concluded that the diversity of marine species is highest at the middle latitudes, and decreases at the equator. Using a worldwide database critically compiled from 72 surveys (307 species, 4,807 water column and surface sediment samples), we analyzed the latitudinal gradients in species richness (LGSR) of a highly diversified group of marine holoplanktonic protists, the polycystine Radiolaria. Species richness values were corrected for uneven sample coverage and sample size, and contrasted with gradients in 11 environmental variables. Radiolarian species richness decreases from the equator to the poles both in the water column and in the surface sediments and is tightly coupled with temperature throughout the entire thermal range of marine waters. In the tropical Pacific Ocean, a conspicuous east-west gradient in diversity is also associated with temperature. Globally, diversity is negatively correlated with mean annual concentrations of nutrients (N, P, Si) and chlorophyll a. Disagreements with results reported for many other oceanic plankton may stem from the reduction of 3D distributional patterns onto 2D or 1D spaces, to the intermittent mixing of Subtropical and Subpolar species at the middle latitudes, and to a Mid-Domain Effect. The fact that radiolarian LGSR do not show this drop at the equator is partly due to methodological and database-related differences, and probably also in part a reflection of taxon-specific traits.
