Abstract:Ex situ conservation in urban areas is an essential complementary approach to in situ conservation in wild areas. In this study, we combined multiple approaches, including vegetation investigations for both natural habitats and urban green spaces, eco-physiological experiments and remote sensing investigations for urban green spaces, to identify potential habitats for introducing the endangered plant species Calycanthus chinensis to urban green spaces. The results showed that (1) C. chinensis prefer living under sparse forests with canopy densities of 20-60%; (2) C. chinensis was not a shade tolerant species due to its chlorophyll a/b ratio (2.58) being higher than the threshold (2.3) for shade tolerant species; (3) the large and thin leaves of C. chinensis are easily damaged by strong wind, so this species can only live under moderate canopy cover; (4) to maintain a sparse crown for the well-being of C. chinensis, the upper layer trees in urban green spaces need to be thinned slightly; and (5) introducing this endangered species increases biodiversity and ecosystem services of urban green spaces. Finally, this study provides a framework and a case study for using urban green spaces as micro-refuges for endangered species.

Abstract:Various kinds of habitation in urban green space could provide micro-refuge for endangered plants conservation. Introducing endangered species to urban green spaces is not only meaningful to the biodiversity conservation but also can increase the ecosystem services in urban areas. With the case of Parrotia subaequalis, an endangered plant in China, multiple approaches were combined to find potential habitats for introducing to urban green spaces, including vegetation investigations for natural habitats, eco-physiological traits measure and a remote sensing investigation for urban green spaces. The results showed that (1) Parrotia subaequalis likely lived in the habitats such as sparse forests, forest margins and half open space with deciduous trees; (2) 12.74% of the park green space in Hangzhou city (11.17 km(2)) could be used as the most suitable habitats for Parrotia subaequalis; (3) Reasonable urban green space management could offer greater potential habitation for Parrotia subaequalis; (4) The introduction of endangered plants to urban green spaces also needs to consider some risks.

Abstract:The rapid development of urbanization and urban land-use intensification have substantially reduced biodiversity and ecosystem services. Wildflower mixtures can improve regional biodiversity and habitat heterogeneity by establishing flower-rich habitats and providing multiple ecosystem services, which were considered one of the most favorable landscape ecological restoration technologies approaches. How to design wildflower mixtures to achieve optimal eco-efficiency is currently unclear. In China, wildflower mixture is one of landscape architecture’s most popular methods for establishing herbaceous vegetation. Currently, there is a notable lack of systematic research regarding species selection, and concerns have been raised about the design approach that introduces convergent species, which may potentially become invasive. This research integrated a wildflower mixture design database currently published in China and discovered community composition and construction methods. Based on this, we compared the species composition of wildflower mixtures in China and assessed the potential invasive species. Additionally, we attempted to explore the distribution over time and space, their potential invasion risk, and the main factors influencing species selection through modeling approaches. The results highlighted that species selection of mixture converged with different spatiotemporal attributes and design intentions, despite designed wildflower mixtures in China having gradually increased in recent years. A large number of species from North America and Europe have been causing an increase in potential invasion annually. Furthermore, the research confirmed that the convergence contributes to the homogenization of urban landscape vegetation communities, which leads to biological invasion from the design level, and revealed the possibility that ineffective ecological restoration techniques may cause adverse environmental impacts.

Abstract:Understory vegetation is a vital part of urban forests and provides a habitat for the sustainability of plant and animal biodiversity. Understory vegetation in urban forests is highly sensitive to anthropogenic stress and thus more prone to plant invasions. However, the influencing factors and invasion mechanisms of nonnative species (nonnatives) in the understory layers of urban forests remain poorly understood. Here, we studied the understory community structure and composition in 75 plots across 16 urban forests in Shanghai, China. We employed the random forest model, structural equation models and phylogenetic methods to explore the factors contributing to invasion success and impact of nonnatives, and also examined the phylogenetic distance and trait difference between native and nonnatives. We found that 19.4% of the species were nonnatives and Erigeron philadelphicus Willd. was the most frequent species, occurring in 33.5% of the plots. Socio-economic variables (gross domestic product, population, and distance from the city center), the understory cover of native species, and overstory canopy cover were the primary factors driving the invasion success and impact of nonnatives. The variation of the nearest phylogenetic distance between native and nonnative species indicated that both anthropogenic stress and light availability affect understory invasion success, but with different mechanisms. Specifically, an increase in light availability reduces the competition for light and provides invasion opportunities for nonnatives that are phylogenetically close to natives, while more habitat types created by human activities provide more invasion opportunities for species with distant phylogenetic relationships with the native species. We believe that these findings have important implications in the management and control of understory invasions in urban forests.

Utilizing spontaneous plants for sustainable development in residential green spaces: Insights from environmental drivers and niche analysis in Fuzhou City, China

Abstract:This study, aimed at exploring low-maintenance, high-diversity, and sustainable greening strategies for residential areas, conducted a comprehensive survey and analysis of spontaneous plants in residential green spaces in Fuzhou City, documenting 361 species. Employing methods such as variance partitioning, Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA), and ecological niche analysis, we investigated the environmental factors influencing the distribution and composition of these plants, as well as their interrelationships. The study found that the composition of spontaneous plants in residential green spaces differs from other urban environments, with a high proportion of alien species (43.77%) due to influences such as resident activities, including a large number of ornamental and edible plants. Maintenance level, urbanization gradient, and green space ratio are common factors affecting the composition and distribution of spontaneous plants in urban environments, while unique residential socio-economic factors like building age, housing prices, and population density significantly affect the spontaneous plants in residential green spaces. The overall dominant plant community shows a significant positive association, indicating a relatively stable stage of succession. Although competition among most species is not significant and interspecific connectivity is weak, the presence of seven dominant invasive species intensifies competition. Based on these findings, the study proposes several specific sustainable management measures: adopting the concept of New Naturalistic Ecological Planting Design, selecting native spontaneous plants with strong adaptability, and constructing plant communities that are ecologically stable and have ornamental value by mimicking natural ecosystems. Additionally, specific methods for managing specific invasive species in residential green spaces using competitive replacement control methods are proposed. These measures aim to promote the health and sustainable development of urban residential green spaces.

Abstract:The number of alien plants escaping from cultivation into native ecosystems is increasing steadily. We provide an overview of the historical, contemporary and potential future roles of ornamental horticulture in plant invasions. We show that currently at least 75% and 93% of the global naturalised alien flora is grown in domestic and botanical gardens, respectively. Species grown in gardens also have a larger naturalised range than those that are not. After the Middle Ages, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries, a global trade network in plants emerged. Since then, cultivated alien species also started to appear in the wild more frequently than non-cultivated aliens globally, particularly during the 19th century. Horticulture still plays a prominent role in current plant introduction, and the monetary value of live-plant imports in different parts of the world is steadily increasing. Historically, botanical gardens - an important component of horticulture - played a major role in displaying, cultivating and distributing new plant discoveries. While the role of botanical gardens in the horticultural supply chain has declined, they are still a significant link, with one-third of institutions involved in retail-plant sales and horticultural research. However, botanical gardens have also become more dependent on commercial nurseries as plant sources, particularly in North America. Plants selected for ornamental purposes are not a random selection of the global flora, and some of the plant characteristics promoted through horticulture, such as fast growth, also promote invasion. Efforts to breed non-invasive plant cultivars are still rare. Socio-economical, technological, and environmental changes will lead to novel patterns of plant introductions and invasion opportunities for the species that are already cultivated. We describe the role that horticulture could play in mediating these changes. We identify current research challenges, and call for more research efforts on the past and current role of horticulture in plant invasions. This is required to develop science-based regulatory frameworks to prevent further plant invasions.

Abstract:Plant invasions cause serious impacts to environment and human economy, and lots of researches have been paid to examine factors that determine the geographical extent of plant invaders. Many intrinsic species attributes, external environmental factors, and time since introduction have all been proposed to explain invasive success. Data on invasive plants distribution in province regions in China were collected, and species attributes and historical factors such as biogeographical origin, life cycle, and time since introduction were determined. While some annuals may eventually occupy the whole country area, perennials are unlikely to do so, particularly those from Central and South America. Time since introduction is significantly related to the number of provinces occupied by an invader; nevertheless after control of certain residence time, annuals are not likely to more provinces than the perennial herbs. High-impact invaders tend to spread faster than other invaders, but only when their life cycle is taken into account. This suggests that other plant traits, instead of life cycle, along with extrinsic factors, greatly contribute to invasive success and distribution area. Invasive plants in China are mainly distributed in human-made habitats, and their long-distance dispersal is primarily associated with human activities. Future studies need to consider interactions between species traits, environmental conditions, and human activities for further insights in researches alike.
Status Analysis of the Ecologic Risk Assessment of Invasive Alien Plants in China

Abstract:Biological invasion has become one of the hot spots of ecologic environment problems in the world. The study on the ecologic risk evaluation of invasive alien plants is aim to evaluate qualitatively and quantitatively the probability of the alient plants invasion and the damage that it could bring to the ecosystem, and to reach the goal of ecological risk management so as to improve the eco-environment and economic coordinated development. Basded on the present situation of invasive alien plants ecological risk evaluation in China, this thesis mainly comprehensively analyzed the sources of invasive alien plants ecological risk and the damage which may cause, explored the assessment method and comprehensive evaluation model on the invasive alien plants ecological risk, established the indexes system and judging standard of alien plants invasive risk, and classified the alien plants risk levels in our country. In the end of thesis, some suggestions on the ecological risk management of invasive alien plants were put forward.

Abstract:The large-scale distribution patterns of alien invasive plants (AIP) can provide key information and a theoretical basis for management strategies, including the prevention of invasions, the control and eradication of established AIPs, and the identification of areas at high risk of invasion. This study aims to quantify distribution patterns of AIP in China, to develop approaches that measure the social, economic, and ecological impacts, and to identify areas that are at higher risk of plant invasion. Based on published literature, there were 384 AIPs in China, representing 233 genera from 66 families. Climatic factors were among the primary factors determining AIPs overall distribution patterns. The majority of AIPs were tropically distributed in China, meaning that they were mainly restricted to southern China. Temperate-distributed AIPs, those distributed only or predominantly in northern China, were fewer but had higher average rates of spread than tropically distributed AIPs. Average ecological and economic impact per AIP was negatively correlated with AIP richness, meaning that areas with relatively few AIPs nevertheless have some of the most detrimental ones. Our comparative evaluation showed that the risk of invasion differed among regions of China, with high-risk areas in southern China (Yunnan, Guangxi, and Guangdong) and central coastal areas of eastern China (Shandong, Hebei, and Jiangsu). In the context of climate change, areas around latitudes of 33 degrees N, including Hebei, Shandong, Henan, and Jiangsu, should be given more attention for the control and prevention of plant invasions. Predictions of high-risk areas for future invasions differed depending on the scale of aggregation and the evaluation index, indicating that invasive risk assessments should be based on multiple factors.

Abstract:Urban biodiversity homogenization and native species habitat loss are becoming increasingly severe. The overuse of lawn grasses and cultivars in green spaces is one of the most important drivers. Scholars have asserted that spontaneous vegetation provides various ecological benefits and should be widely incorporated in planting design. Factors influencing spontaneous plant diversity have mainly been studied in specific habitats or at the city scale, and findings surrounding the attributes of urban parks that support the diversity of spontaneous plants are lacking. This study aimed to provide a perspective on conserving spontaneous plants through inferring the urban park attributes associated with plant diversity. Twenty-two urban park samples in Beijing were examined to identify the correlation between various park variables and spontaneous vegetation. This study recorded 199 spontaneous plant species, with large historic parks containing the most number of species. Park size was a remarkable predictive variable for the diversity of spontaneous plants. Species richness and diversity in large parks were significantly higher than in small parks; not only in total richness due to the species–area relationship but also in richness and diversity at the community level independent of plot number. Microhabitat heterogeneity and the percentage of green area had the strongest positive association with the richness of spontaneous plants. In contrast, the maintenance intensity, perimeter–area ratio, and fragmentation of green area, deciduous forest, and open lawn patches had negative associations with spontaneous plant richness. Redundancy analysis demonstrated that park area, maintenance intensity, microhabitat heterogeneity, and deciduous forest patches were the most remarkable variables predicting species composition. The correlations of variables related to water and open lawn patches with spontaneous plant diversity were more evident in summer. The predicted variables were also more significantly correlated with the diversity of exotic species in summer than in spring. Perennial herbs were more sensitive to the evaluated park attributes. This study elucidates how spontaneous plants are associated with the attributes of urban parks in Beijing, with critical implications for other large cities.

Abstract:Urban biodiversity is strongly correlated with human well-being and is quickly becoming a new research field. Most previous studies in this field focus on patterns of species richness but few consider species and trait compositions and how these are shaped by anthropogenic and environmental drivers. Such information, however, is critical for effective planning and management of urban species. We compiled published species lists from 71 Chinese university campuses. We also collected environmental data for each campus, including anthropogenic (campus age and area) and environmental variables (climate and topography), to explore the distribution patterns and the drivers of species richness, composition and traits. We found that university campuses in China maintain substantial plant diversity, including at least 1565 woody and 1614 herbaceous species. The distribution pattern of campus species richness was mostly driven by anthropogenic variables, being positively correlated with campus age and size. In contrast, campus species composition and leaf traits were mostly driven by climate variables. This was especially true for woody plants of which campus species composition and traits were more constrained by mean annual temperature than herb species. Our study provides a basic but diverse database for the selection of campus plants, which can benefit the management of urban ecosystems. Our results reveal that landscape design can influence urban species richness, species composition is still restricted by the natural environment. Hence, many endangered species can be protected in these human-friendly urban ecosystems if they have suitable traits adapted to local climatic conditions.
Identifying the most noxious invasive plants in China: role of geographical origin, life form and means of introduction

Abstract:In a heterogenous world, invasive plants often differ in noxiousness and nature of impacts, and there is a difference between strong and weak invaders. That knowing which invaders are most noxious and their nature of impacts is of great value to invasive ecology and management. Here we show that in China the most notorious invasive plants are with a perennial life cycle, clonal growth ability and from the American continent. They often form monocultural populations in land and water, replacing almost all other plants, and are mainly distributed in Central and South China. Following are some accidentally introduced annuals. Annuals from the American continent are often common, dominant or in monocultural populations in ruderal and agricultural habitats whereas those from Eurasia are highly noxious only in agricultural habitats. Annuals are not restricted in distribution and could spread fast to all of the country. There are also two perennial grasses from Europe and Mediterranean area and four intentionally introduced annuals from South America that were identified in this study. Factors that may account for these patterns include relatedness between invasives and natives, vegetative propagation, and plant strategies. The invasive plants identified in this study have caused significant negative impacts to native biodiversity, environment, economics and agriculture, with different groups being different in their extent and nature of impacts.

Abstract:Invasive species are a subset of naturalized species, and naturalized species are a subset of alien species. Determining the relationship among these three assemblages would be helpful in predicting and preventing biological invasion. Here, we reviewed the families, lifeforms, origins, introduction pathways and phylogenetic diversity of alien, naturalized and invasive vascular plants in China. The results show that species in the Asteraceae, Fabaceae and Poaceae families had a high dominance among alien, naturalized and invasive species. Moreover, almost all alien species in the Amaranthaceae, Solanaceae, Convolvulaceae and Euphorbiaceae families became naturalized species, and about 26.7% of the naturalized species became invasive species. Perennial herbs comprised a higher proportion of alien species than did annual herbs, though annual herbs were more suited to becoming invasive than perennial herbs. A considerable proportion (57.8%) of invasive species were introduced from America. More than half (56.5%) of alien species were introduced for their ornamental value, and half of these have become naturalized in China. Moreover, about half (55.2%) of all invasive species were introduced for their economic value (including ornamental, foraging and medicinal purposes). Invasive species were phylogenetically clustered and phylogenetically distant from alien and naturalized species, which indicates that phylogenetic differences could be helpful in becoming invasive. There is no doubt that human activity plays a significant role in biological invasion. This study suggests that when introducing alien species to a region, decision-makers should certainly consider the species’ phylogeny, beyond just its fundamental characteristics.

Abstract:We used a species distribution model to evaluate the invasion risk of 250 highly invasive alien woody species in potential national park sites in Xinjiang under climate change. The probability of invasive woody species distribution in potential park sites in Xinjiang is significantly lower than that across China. This study can contribute to the monitoring and management of national parks and can provide an actionable foundation for protecting the ecosystem functions and minimizing the risk of alien species invasion in potential national park sites in the face of climate change. The invasion of alien woody species may have broad ecological, economic, and health impacts on ecosystems and biodiversity under climate change. Previous studies showed that disrupting the biodiversity conservation mechanisms in protected areas can seriously threaten natural ecosystems and the protection of rare and endangered species in such protected areas. However, there is currently no standard for evaluating the invasion risk of woody plants under climate change when establishing national parks in China. Therefore, we used a species distribution model to evaluate the invasion risk of 250 invasive alien woody species in potential national park sites in Xinjiang under climate change. The results indicated that the probability of forest invasion in the potential Altai Kanas National Park was determined to be significantly higher than that of the average level in Xinjiang nature reserves, both under current and future climate conditions. At the same time, the probability of invasive woody species invading coniferous forests, broad‐leaved forests, and grassland ecosystems is higher in the Altai Kanas and Tianshan potential national parks. We found that Acer negundo, Robinia pseudoacacia, and Amorpha fruticose in potential parks in Xinjiang have higher invasion potential and thus require heightened vigilance to stop their spread. This study contributes to the monitoring and management of national parks and provides an actionable foundation for protecting ecosystem functions and minimizing the potential risk of invasive alien species under climate change.

Perspectives on General Trends of Plant Invasions with Special Reference to Alien Weed Flora of Shanghai

Abstract:Plant invasions are unintended consequences of globalisation, which facilitates the transglobal movement of plant species across all geographical and physical boundaries with the vastly increasing movement of people and commercial goods. As an internationalised city that has various channels through which plants′ movements occur, Shanghai has been subject to a heavy invasion of plants. This paper firstly deals with some characteristics of plant invasions in Shanghai. It is concluded that: 1) alien plants play an important role in the flora of Shanghai, accounting for 57.4% of the total flora; 2) annual and biennial plants are the major components of Shanghai′s alien flora, representing 69.1%; 3) most alien plants belong to a relatively few families (e.g. Asteraceae and Poaceae); 4) monocotylous families tend to have a higher proportion of alien plants with respect to their world′s number of species than do dicotylous families; and 5) plant invasions will continue to sweep across literally every part of Shanghai as the consequence of its further urbanisation and increasing global trade (c.f. China′s entry into WTO by November 2001). These patterns of plant invasions reflect the role of humans as global plant dispersers and of human disturbance in plant invasions. In the rest of the paper, we briefly review other issues in the field of plant invasions, including attributes of invasive species, habitat invisibility, environmental and economic costs of plant invasions, and future research directions.

Abstract:Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the presence of insoluble, fibrous deposits composed principally of amyloid β (Aβ) peptide. A number of studies have provided information on the fibril structure and on the factors affecting fiber formation, but the details of the fibril structure are not known. We used fluorescence quenching to investigate the solvent accessibility and surface charge of the soluble Aβ(1–40) dimer and amyloid fibrils. Analogs of Aβ(1–40) containing a single tryptophan were synthesized by substituting residues at positions 4, 10, 34, and 40 with tryptophan. Quenching measurements in the dimeric state indicate that the amino-terminal analogs (AβF4W and AβY10W) are accessible to polar quenchers, and the more carboxyl-terminal analog AβV34W is less accessible. AβV40W, on the other hand, exhibits a low degree of quenching, indicating that this residue is highly shielded from the solvent in the dimeric state. Correcting for the effect of reduced translational and rotational diffusion, fibril formation was associated with a selective increase in solvent exposure of residues 34 and 40, suggesting that a conformation change may take place in the carboxyl-terminal region coincident with the dimer to fibril transition.
Exploring plant characteristics for constructing a pre-border weed risk assessment for China

Abstract:Biological invasions has caused significant damage to the ecological environment and economy of the world. Pest risk assessment is the most cost-effective means of preventing biological invasions to identify potentially suitable indexes for constructing pre-border weed risk assessment methods for China, we screened 80 metrics derived from 53 plant characteristics known to be related to invasive alien plants in other parts of the world and tested whether these metrics differed significantly between two groups of 103 invasive alien plants and 107 non-invasive plants in China. The results showed significant differences in 30 characteristics between invasive and non-invasive plants in China. Compared to the non-invasive plant group, the invasive plant group in China had a greater proportion of (1) plants native to the Americas, (2) plants belonging to the Asteraceae family, (3) polyploid plants, and had (4) a smaller proportion of plants propagated asexually only. The 30 metrics with significant differences were selected for LASSO regression to develop a predictive model to determine how well the metrics could distinguish between invasive and non-invasive alien plants already present in China. Finally an optimal model with 18 metrics was screened out. The optimal model was able to accurately discriminate 75% of non-invasive plants and 90% of invasive plants on the test set. Therefore the present study screened a range of useful metrics for the identification of invasive plants in China, and the high discriminative power of our models indicates that the subset of 18 variables retained in the final model could be useful for establishing a pre-border invasive plant screening tool for China in the future.

Abstract:Invasion of habitats by non-native species is one of the major factors that threaten global biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.China is becoming one of the most severely invaded countries in the world with increasing frequency of deliberate species introduction,international tourism and worldwide trade of agricultural products.A comprehensive understanding of invasion process and involved mechanism is very necessary to avoid the outbreak of invasive species and prevent new invasion.Solidago canadensis L,the worldwide invader with a invasion history over 70 years in China,has been extensively studied in the last decades.However,few studies concerned the persistent and profound impacts on local environment induced by invasion,and their feedbacks on subsequent invasion and plant community dynamics.Here,we reviewed the successful invasion mechanisms of S.canadensis from its biological characteristics,invasibility of the introduced range,allelopathic effect and plant-soil feedbacks based on novel interests and recent advancements,analyzed and evaluated the inherent relations between four aspects above.It suggested that invasion was a complicated biological process that involved multitrophic interactions of herbivores,carnivores,plants and decomposers,and a result of interactions between multiple mechanisms,among which the most far reaching reason was disturbance by human activities.The strong vegetative propagules produced by rhizome of S.canadensis strengthened its population established in invaded habitat,and the numerous fertile offspring expanded new habitat through wind dispersal.The high phenotype plasticity to resource fluctuation and high tolerance to stress conditions offered extra advantages over local competitors.These extrinsic performance could partially be explained by intrinsic features as S.canadensis was a polyploid complex and characterized by high genetic diversity.Moreover,the strong allelopathic effects on native plants and soil borne pathogens significantly inhibited potential antagonists,which undoubtedly further extended its dominance.Susceptibility of the introduced range resulted from appropriate climate,low biotic resistance and strong human disturbance provided favorable conditions for invasion.Besides,facilitated by mycorrhizal mutualism also played an important role in the invasion of S.canadensis.Community structure of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi was changed in a way that favored S.canadensis more than native host plants.The mechanism of host preference remained unclear and represented an intriguing field that awaited to be intensively studied.Up to now,however,enemy release from goldenrod specific gallmaker and other pathogens in China did not show any positive impacts on its growth and reproduction.Although parasitized by Cuscuta japonica exhibited an obvious biological control potential,its ecological risks need to be further examined and evaluated before extensive application.Prospects for the study of S.canadensis in the future were proposed with emphases on(1) isolation,structure determination and in situ acting mechanism illumination of allelochemicals;(2) establishment and improvement of database,population dynamic and spreading tendency prediction using mathematical models;(3) long term monitoring on post invasion environmental changes,study on functions of S.canadensis in ecosystem and co-evolution with local organisms and(4) proper utilization,effective control and eradication method of S.canadensis.
Patterns of plant invasions in China: Taxonomic, biogeographic, climatic approaches and anthropogenic effects

Abstract:This study was aimed to determine the patterns as well as the effects of biological, anthropogenic, and climatic factors on plant invasions in China. About 270 volumes of national and regional floras were employed to compile a naturalized flora of China. Habit, life form, origin, distribution, and uses of naturalized plants were also analyzed to determine patterns on invasion. Correlations between biological, anthropogenic and climatic parameters were estimated at province and regional scales. Naturalized species represent 1% of the flora of China. Asteraceae, Fabaceae, and Poaceae are the dominant families, but Euphorbiaceae and Cactaceae have the largest ratios of naturalized species to their global numbers. Oenothera, Euphorbia, and Crotalaria were the dominant genera. Around 50% of exotic species were introduced intentionally for medicinal purposes. Most of the naturalized species originated in tropical America, followed by Asia and Europe. Number of naturalized species was significantly correlated to the number of native species/log area. The intensity of plant invasion showed a pattern along climate zones from mesic to xeric, declining with decreasing temperature and precipitation across the nation. Anthropogenic factor, such as distance of transportation, was significantly correlated to plant invasions at a regional scale. Although anthropogenic factors were largely responsible for creating opportunities for exotic species to spread and establish, the local biodiversity and climate factors were the major factors shaping the pattern of plant invasions in China. The warm regions, which are the hot spots of local biodiversity, and relatively developed areas of China, furthermore, require immediate attentions.

Abstract:Urban environments are dynamic landscapes shaped by a multitude of factors, including environmental conditions and socio-economic influences. This study systematically investigates how various factors shape urban plant diversity in Haikou City, Hainan Province, China, focusing on 30 key drivers including socio-economic aspects, biophysical conditions, landscape elements, and management practices. Our research methodology involved a comprehensive analysis of these factors' impact on six types of urban plant species: spontaneous, native spontaneous, exotic spontaneous, cultivated, native cultivated, and exotic cultivated. Conducted in urban areas with varying population densities and landscape features, our sampling approach aimed to understand the species' distribution patterns. We discovered significant correlations between plant species diversity and specific environmental and socio-economic variables. Our results indicate that spontaneous species are prevalent in densely populated areas with strong social ties, whereas areas rich in tree and shrub cover see fewer such species. Native cultivated species favor more serene, less urbanized landscapes, while exotic cultivated species are predominantly found in economically affluent areas with diverse vegetation. These findings offer valuable insights for urban planning and biodiversity conservation, emphasizing the need for customized greening strategies that align with local environmental and social contexts. By adopting such tailored approaches, urban planners can more effectively manage landscapes, enrich green spaces, and foster biodiverse, sustainable ecosystems. This research not only enhances our understanding of urban plant biodiversity but also lays the groundwork for future studies and policy-making, promoting harmonious integration of diverse plant life within urban settings.
