Abstract:Due to advances of information, communication, and technology and reductions in trade barriers, countries are increasingly deeply engaged in global value chains (GVCs). In the article, we theoretically and empirically show that a country's position in GVCs has significantly positive effects on its employment level and structure. Countries located in a higher position in GVCs induce a larger demand for high-skilled labors and a more perfect employment structure. Empirical results further reveal that the position in GVCs will help improve employment structure in both developed countries and developing countries, and the employment effects of GVCs are statistically larger for capital-intensive industries than for labor-intensive industries. Moreover, by distinguishing international and domestic division of labor, we find that the employment effects of domestic value chains are larger than foreign value chains.

Abstract:The employment effect of enterprises embedded in global value chains (GVCs) has important theoretical value, but existing research has ignored the impact of environmental costs on employment under the division of labor system within the value chain. By constructing a GVC-embedded index considering environmental costs, this study investigates the impact of Chinese industrial enterprises’ embedding into GVCs on employment at both the theoretical and empirical levels. It is found that when the environmental cost is considered, the improvement of GVC embeddedness has a significant inhibiting effect on employment, especially for female laborers, lower-skilled laborers, state-owned enterprises, private enterprises, and enterprises in the eastern region of China. The research also shows that when considering environmental costs, the labor cost increase effect enhances the negative effect of increased GVC embeddedness on employment, while the innovation promotion effect and the foreign direct investment effect serve to mitigate the negative effect. The results provide a reference for developing countries seeking to effectively protect people’s livelihood and employment while achieving a leap in the division of labor along the green value chain.

Abstract:Comprehensively measuring embodied carbon emissions and employment generation from global value chain (GVC) production activities is essential for GVC upgrades and sustainable development. Previous studies have ignored embodied carbon emissions and employment generation from GVC production activities involving cross-border direct investment, which may underestimate the impact of GVC participation. Using an intercountry input-output model distinguishing domestic and foreign-invested enterprises, this study measured embodied carbon emissions and employment generation in China's GVC production activities from 2005–2018 and explored their trade-offs based on the aggregate-embodied carbon employment intensity (ACEI). The major findings were as follows. (1) Trade-related GVC contributes more to embodied carbon emissions than to that of embodied employment. However, investment-related GVC had the opposite effect. Mixed trade and investment-related GVC contribute approximately equally to carbon emissions and employment. (2) China experienced increasing environmental losses relative to employment generation from GVC participation increased between 2005 and 2018. The environmental costs of creating employment units through investment-related GVC activities were lower than those for the other two GVC routes. (3) High R&D-intensive manufacturing industries suffered a notable decline in ACEI. This finding suggests that a double dividend for the environment and employment is more likely to be achieved in high-tech manufacturing industries. (4) The ACEI of foreign-invested enterprises in China was lower than that of domestic enterprises, particularly in the production-sharing activities between foreign-invested enterprises, which exhibited a better trade-off between socioeconomic benefits and environmental damages. These findings provide useful insights into the impact assessment of GVCs, which aid in achieving sustainable development in China and other emerging economies.

Abstract:This study examines the overall effect of global value chains (GVCs) on wages and labour demand. It exploits the World Input–Output Database to measure GVC involvement via recently developed participation indices (using both backward and forward linkages) and the relative GVC position using three-stage least squares regression. We find that the relative GVC position is negatively correlated with wages and employment and that the GVC participation effect depends on whether backward or forward linkages are considered. Moreover, we find heterogeneity across both countries (middle- vs high-income) and sectors (manufacturing versus services). Notably, the effect of GVC involvement on the labour market differs from that produced by traditional domestic trade.

Abstract:Using the Asian Development Bank Multi-Regional Input-Output Tables (ADB-MRIO) and the UIBE GVC Indicators Database, this paper selects the data of 14 manufacturing industries in China from 2007 to 2020, and empirically studies the impact of global value chain restructuring on the product structure of China-EU exports. Research shows that the restructuring of global value chain is conducive to the optimization of China-EU export product structure, and has a stronger effect on high-tech industries. Among them, the labor cost-driven global value chain restructuring is not conducive to the upgrading of China-EU export product structure, while the technological progress-driven global value chain restructuring is helpful to the upgrading of the product structure of China-EU exports. Further research finds that the global value chain restructuring driven by the US trade protection policy is conducive to the upgrading of China-EU export product structure. The research of this paper is helpful for China to strengthen China-EU cooperation and upgrade export trade structure in the new wave of global value chain restructuring. This paper can provide a possible path for China and other developing countries to explore high-quality economic development and provide relevant reference value for policy formulation related to the establishment of long-term trade cooperation with the EU.

Abstract:The deepening of global value chains (GVCs) has made remarkable impacts on the environmental outcomes of all countries/regions. What are the differences in environmental burden undertaken by countries/regions at different stages of economic development are a question worthy inquiry. This study compares the impacts of GVCs participation degree on CO2 intensity between developed and developing countries/regions. Using panel data of 19 manufacturing industries in 43 countries/regions over the period of 2000–2014, it is discovered that the deeper participation in GVCs of developed countries/regions significantly reduces their CO2 intensity, while the more participation in GVCs of developing countries/regions significantly increases their CO2 intensity. Additionally, the quantile regression results reveal that the reduction of CO2 intensity is increasing for industries with higher initial CO2 intensity for developed countries/regions, whereas for developing countries/regions, only industries with initial low CO2 intensity experience significant increases in CO2 intensity. We further analyzed the effect of GVCs participation degree on CO2 intensity for high-tech and low-tech industries and discovered that the effect is only significant in low-tech industries. These findings provide empirical evidence for the pollution haven hypothesis and offer enlightenment to formulate future trade and environmental policies.

Abstract:Conventional wisdom argues that a well functioning financial system is essential to foster economic growth and development. While its financial market is still underdeveloped, China has not only achieved great economic growth and speedy export growth, but also elevated its position as an exporter in the global value chain (GVC). This paper examines the impact of trade credit on the GVC positions of Chinese manufacturing enterprises. The empirical study finds that trade credit has a significant promotional effect on enterprises' GVC positions, and the effect is more pronounced for private firms, firms with high market position, and firms in high-technology industries. The mechanism analysis shows that trade credit heightens the export quality of products and alleviates the financing constraints of enterprises, thus promoting their GVC positions. The findings have implications for Chinese manufacturing firms to exploit the role of trade credit in promoting their GVC positions and fostering new advantages in international competition.

Abstract:While international trade drives countries' economic growth and promotes employment, it also has some environmental impact. To investigate the impact of trade on carbon emissions and employment, this study performs a detailed decomposition and measurement of embodied carbon emissions and employment in value-added trade between China, Japan, and Korea from 2007–2019. The current study established that, while China's trade with Japan and Korea created many domestic jobs, it also resulted in significant domestic carbon emissions. While Japan and Korea's trade with China reduced carbon emissions, employment in their own countries was reduced and replaced by employment in China. At the value chain route level, trade among the three countries through each value chain route either achieves employment promotion at the cost of increased carbon emissions or promotes domestic emissions reduction at the cost of employment loss. However, it is worth noting that, when trade between Japan and Korea was conducted through simple GVCs (route 2), it not only helped reduce Japan's carbon emissions, but also effectively promoted employment. This is the ideal trade route. The results of this study can provide useful reference information for developing countries such as China, to achieve sustainable economic growth, carbon emission reduction, and employment promotion in the context of trade globalization.

Abstract:This study aims to evaluate the environmental and employment impacts of China’s value-added trade using the gross exports decomposition method and balance of avoided factor content. The major findings are that China’s value-added trade overall leads to increases in global emissions and employment, which are mainly affected by the characteristics of China’s exports. However, China’s imports indirectly promote global emissions reductions and have a significant driving effect on foreign employment. Trade through onefold value chains plays a dominant role in determining both impacts. Simple global value chain (GVC)-related trade contributes most to reducing global emissions but decreases global employment as well. Complex GVC-related trade overall increases global employment and emissions. At the bilateral level, the impacts are varied, and there are some instances of complex GVC-related bilateral trade that contribute to global emission mitigation. A win–win situation for the environment and employment can be achieved in China’s bilateral trade with some countries through specific value chain routes. These findings can provide useful information for balancing trade growth, carbon emission reduction, and job creation and may indicate the future direction of China’s upgrade in the GVCs and help allocate emission reduction responsibilities.

Abstract:The rise of agricultural global value chains (AGVCs) has transformed the nature of food production around the world. This paper provides evidence on the job creation effects in response to the expansion of AGVCs in agrarian economies. By using a constructed panel data set of 155 countries for the period 1991-2015, we find that a greater AGVC participation is associated with an increase in agricultural employment growth. We uncover evidence that the positive job creation impact is mainly driven by the processed food sector downstream of global value chains (GVCs) rather than the raw commodity sector upstream of GVCs. We find substantial heterogeneity of impacts that are more pronounced in lower-middle and high-income countries than in low-income countries.
Digitalization, positioning in global value chain and carbon emissions embodied in exports: Evidence from global manufacturing production-based emissions

Abstract:Digitalization and the emergence of global value chain (GVC) have been the two most significant changes affecting international trade in recent decades. This study examines the impact of digitalization and the position of GVC on carbon emissions embodied in exports (CEEE). In doing so, we use high-dimensional fixed-effect models and three-dimensional panel data covering 18 manufacturing industries in 38 economies from 2000 to 2014. The results show that digitalization and CEEE have an inverted U-shaped relationship, and upgrading GVC position can significantly reduce CEEE. Compared with developing countries, developed countries are prone to enter the downward phase of the inverted U-shaped curve through digitalization, thereby curbing CEEE. Similarly, high-tech industries enter the decline stage of the inverted U-shaped curve earlier than low-tech industries in digitalization process. In addition, improvements in GVC position in developed countries (or high-tech industries) have a greater impact on CEEE reduction than in developing countries (or low-tech industries). Finally, the results of nonlinear moderating effect model indicate that upgrading GVC's position flattens (or positively moderates) the inverted U-shaped curve and shifts the curve's turning point to the left. An important implication of our findings is that a country should actively raise its GVC position while focusing on digitalization for the goal of sustainable development.

Abstract:The impact of global value chain (GVC) division of labor on carbon emissions embodied in exports has attracted extensive attention from scholars, but existing studies have not distinguished the heterogeneous impact of different GVC embedding patterns on the carbon emissions embodied in exports. This study examines the effects of two GVC embedding patterns (forward embedding and backward embedding) on carbon emissions embodied in exports using data from 46 sectors in China from 2000 to 2014. The results show that both the backward and forward embedding patterns are characterized by increasing forward participation which increases carbon emissions embodied in Chinese exports. By contrast, the forward embedding pattern is characterized by increasing the length of the forward production chain and increasing the global value chain location index to help reduce the carbon emissions embodied in exports. There is significant heterogeneity in the effect of forward and backward embedding patterns on the carbon emissions embodied in exports. Increasing the length of forward production chains can effectively reduce the carbon emissions embodied in exports in labor-intensive and technology-intensive sectors but has no significant effect on capital-intensive sectors. Therefore, the Chinese government should start to reduce the carbon emissions embodied in China's exports by changing the GVC embedding pattern, improving the position of GVC embedding, and vigorously developing energy-saving and emission reduction technologies and clean industries, to help China achieve its CO 2 reduction target in 2030.

Abstract:Embedding new technology creates opportunities and challenges for the global value chain (GVC). Using country-level panel data from 59 economies in 2007-2018, we construct a fixed-effects model to investigate the relationship between digital technology and the GVC position. Moreover, we examine how digital technology affects the GVC position with a mediating model and consider the heterogeneity of this impact on GVC status. The main findings reveal a U-shaped relationship between digital technology and the GVC position, which means that, during the catch-up stage of digital technology, negative effects on input demand chains lead to a decline in GVC status, whereas, at a mature phase of technological development, positive effects on output supply chains enhance the GVC position. The impact of digital technology on the ascent in GVC status is mediated by productivity. Moreover, we analyze the different impacts of trade openness and economic development levels. Our findings suggest that countries with lower levels of economic development and high trade openness reach a U-shaped inflection point, accelerating their progression in the global value chain.

Abstract:Abstract In the context of the digital era, global value chains are facing unprecedented reconstruction and upgrading. The development of global trade is influenced by the importance of digital trade in upgrading the status of global value chains. Based on the research of digital trade and global value chain theory, we construct a mechanism model of digital trade to enhance the status of the global value chain and measure digital trade and global value chain by combining the multi-indicator panel hierarchical factor analysis method and the trade value-added accounting method, respectively. Benchmark regression analysis of digital trade and global value chain status indices of major economies is used to explore the impact of digital trade on the status of global value chains. There is a positive correlation between the level of digital trade and the GVC status index, with the GVC status index increasing by 1.6 percentage points for every 1 percentage point increase in the level of digital trade. The level of digital trade has a positive impact on the GVC position of both developed and developing economies. For every 1% increase in the level of digital trade, the GVC position index of developed and developing economies increases by 2.5% and 1.7%, respectively.

Abstract:This paper examines the link between trade and economic growth by emphasizing on recent progress of global value chains (GVCs) for a sample of 58 countries over the period 2005–2015. The findings show that trade and in particular trade linked to GVCs spurs economic growth. However, the impact of GVC engagement on economic growth is diverse as we broaden our analysis to sectoral level. The study also notes that the benefits associated with regional value chains are higher. Furthermore, functional specialization in trade also plays a key role in improving growth. Therefore, policies to promote the GVC engagement and strengthening the domestic fundamentals should be the aim for countries to further benefit from trade.

Abstract:Participation in global value chains (GVCs) has become a central topic in trade and development policy. It has opened new ways to achieve industrial upgrading. However, some theoretical models suggest that not all countries will upgrade through participation in GVCs. Using panel data from the World Input-Output Database, we examine the effects of backward and forward GVC participation on three dimensions of industrial upgrading (process, product, and skill upgrading). We find that backward GVC participation provides more upgrading opportunities for developing countries as it enables a less developed country to import sophisticated inputs. This activates learning through embodied knowledge. In contrast, forward participation has higher level of upgrading effect on developed countries.

Abstract:With increasing refinement in production, advancements in information technology, and optimized transport, enterprise value chains have become global. This international division of labor based on Global Value Chains (GVCs) has driven economic growth but also caused issues like income disparity and status inequality. Developed countries aim to maintain dominance in GVCs, while developing countries seek greater participation and advancement within them. For developing nations, breaking the “low-end lock” in GVCs is crucial. This paper empirically examines the complex relationship between digital trade and global value chain reconstruction, and explores the moderating effect of institutional environmental factors on the above relationships. This enriches the research perspective and expands the research at the intersection of digital trade and value chain. Findings suggest that digital trade affects China’s position and participation in global value chains, with institutional quality and economic freedom moderating these effects. This research contributes to understanding the complex dynamics of digital trade and value chain reconstruction, highlighting China’s potential to ascend the global value chain through digital trade development.

Abstract:The positive effect of global value chains (GVCs) integration on skill-biased technological change (SBTC) in developed countries has been proved extensively, yet little is known about that effect in developing countries, almost all of which are integrated into the low end of GVCs dominated by developed countries (universally located in the middle or at the high end of GVCs). Thus, research on the case of China, the world's largest developing country, can provide a novel insight into the general effect. In this study, we first develop a dynamic general equilibrium model with GVCs low-end integration and SBTC, through which we find that the mechanism whereby GVCs low-end integration works against SBTC in developing countries lies in too much skilled labour being absorbed by low-skill industries due to low-skill-biased technology diffusion, which causes insufficient skilled labour for high-skill industries. After that, the model is estimated using China's provincial panel data over the period from 1997 to 2015, and the empirical results show the negative impact of GVCs low-end integration on SBTC. The findings indicate that the GVCs position should not be overlooked in analysing the impact of GVCs integration on SBTC and that an improvement of the GVCs position is crucial for SBTC in developing countries.
Non-linear effects of corporate global value chain participation on pollution emissions: evidence from China

Abstract:Global value chains (GVCs) involve production and distribution cooperation as well as pollution redistribution. With the increasing frequency of global trade activities and the growing problem of environmental pollution, the impact of GVC participation on environmental pollution has attracted considerable academic attention. In this study, a dynamic panel Gaussian mixture model was constructed using data from several databases, including Chinese industrial enterprise pollution emission and customs data from 2005 to 2013. We found that the degree of GVC participation of enterprises and pollution emission show a non-linear inverted U-shaped relationship. This indicates that the pollution emissions of enterprises increased and then decreased as the degree of GVC participation increased. We constructed separate models for the effects of output upstreamness and input downstreamness on pollution emissions and found that upstreamness is negatively related to pollution emissions, with the upstream economic components of GVC (such as technology research and development, international marketing, and key component manufacturing) producing emission reduction effects. Downstreamness, on the other hand, is positively correlated with emissions, which means that the downstream economic components of the GVC (e.g., processing, assembly, and production of non-critical components) will increase emissions. Based on the second finding, we proposed that the inverted U-shaped relationship is the result of the combined influence of upstream and downstream participation and confirmed this hypothesis by constructing a multiple mediating effects model. This study will help enterprises consciously implement environmental protection measures and broaden the scope of research on the environmental impact of GVCs, providing a broader segmented research perspective on the degree of participation in GVCs and the environmental performance of exporting enterprises, and guiding governments to formulate more effective industrial policies for foreign trade and promote better environmental performance of enterprises.

Abstract:This paper studies the impact of global value chains (GVCs) participation on carbon emissions embodied in exports (EEE) of China during 2005-2016, and analyses firm heterogeneity from the perspective of firm ownership and trade patterns; Then, industries are classified based on factor intensity and technology level, and the industrial heterogeneity of different firms is analyzed; Finally, through counterfactual analysis, this paper evaluates EEE under four anti-globalization scenarios. The empirical study shows that with the increase of GVCs position, EEE first increases and then decreases, showing an inverted U-shaped distribution. From the perspective of firm ownership, the relationship between GVCs position of domestic firms and EEE is inverted U-shaped distribution, while GVCs position of multinational enterprises (MNEs) is positively correlated with EEE. The relationship of capital-intensive and technology-intensive domestic firms, high-tech and medium-tech manufacturing domestic firms are also inverted U-shaped distribution. The positive correlation of MNEs is reflected in the low-tech manufacturing industries. From the perspective of trade patterns, with the increase of GVCs position, EEE of processing trade firms presents an inverted U-shaped distribution, while it is not significant for general trade firms. The inverted U-shaped relationship between GVCs position in capital-intensive industries and EEE are confirmed in all firms. Under anti-globalization scenarios of 50% backflow, EEE would increase. Under scenarios of 100% backflow, EEE would reduce. The results above provide useful references to achieve carbon emission reduction targets.
