Abstract:We study generalized multisets (multisets that allow possible negative multiplicities) both in the Zermelo-Fraenkel framework and in the finitely supported mathematics. We extend the notion of generalized multiset over a finite alphabet, and we replace it by the notion of algebraically finitely supported generalized multiset over a possibly infinite alphabet. We analyze the correspondence between some properties of generalized multisets obtained in finitely supported mathematics where only finitely supported objects are allowed, and those obtained in the classical Zermelo-Fraenkel framework.
A Universal Program to Improve Mental Health among Youth from Low-Income Predominantly Minority Communities: Implementation of Advocates 4 ALL Youth (ALLY)

Abstract:Disparities in mental health care and access to care disproportionately affect youth from minoritized and low-income communities. School-based prevention programs have the potential to offer a non-stigmatized approach to mental health care as well as the ability to reach many students simultaneously. Advocates 4 All Youth (ALLY) is a program developed for 5-6th grade students aimed at improving self-efficacy and resilience via individualized sessions with a trusted adult (ALLYs). The feasibility of delivering ALLY in a racially and minoritized low-income community is discussed and modifications required to implement the program documented. Students completed questionnaires and sessions with an ALLY. Aspects of program delivery deemed feasible included training ALLYs to delivery program, stakeholder buy-in regarding missing class time, and students attending the sessions. Further modifications included adjustments to materials due to lower reading level and health literacy related-educational needs. Programs designed in one demographic setting may not work in a different setting.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: This study examined a school- and home-based mental health service model, Links to Learning, focused on empirical predictors of learning as primary goals for services in high-poverty urban communities.METHOD: Teacher key opinion leaders were identified through sociometric surveys and trained, with mental health providers and parent advocates, on evidence-based practices to enhance children's learning. Teacher key opinion leaders and mental health providers cofacilitated professional development sessions for classroom teachers to disseminate 2 universal (Good Behavior Game, peer-assisted learning) and 2 targeted (Good News Notes, Daily Report Card) interventions. Group-based and home-based family education and support were delivered by mental health providers and parent advocates for children in kindergarten through 4th grade diagnosed with 1 or more disruptive behavior disorders. Services were Medicaid-funded through 4 social service agencies (N = 17 providers) in 7 schools (N = 136 teachers, 171 children) in a 2 (Links to Learning vs. services as usual) × 6 (pre- and posttests for 3 years) longitudinal design with random assignment of schools to conditions. Services as usual consisted of supported referral to a nearby social service agency.RESULTS: Mixed effects regression models indicated significant positive effects of Links to Learning on mental health service use, classroom observations of academic engagement, teacher report of academic competence and social skills, and parent report of social skills. Nonsignificant between-groups effects were found on teacher and parent report of problem behaviors, daily hassles, and curriculum-based measures. Effects were strongest for young children, girls, and children with fewer symptoms.CONCLUSION: Community mental health services targeting empirical predictors of learning can improve school and home behavior for children living in high-poverty urban communities.

Factors shaping Black caregivers' interest and participation in a university-church partnership program for youth mental health

Abstract:It is important for researchers to understand the factors that attract marginalized community members to participate in youth service intervention programs, considering their historic mistrust in White-dominated systems (i.e., education and mental health). We employed a hermeneutic phenomenology study to understand 15 Black caregivers' experiences of a university-church partnership program that was grounded in a school mental health paradigm. Using individual interviews and a structured coding process, we examined factors that informed participants' engagement with the program from start to finish. First, caregivers initiated involvement with the program due to their children's holistic needs, the accessibility of the program, and the trust they had in program leaders (including church representatives) and processes. Second, caregivers sustained involvement in the program due to graduate interventionists/mentors displaying professional competence, cultural responsiveness, and an ethic of care. Finally, caregivers viewed the program as helping the children, family, and community thrive, which influenced their desire to see the program grow and expand. As informed by the present study and related literature, recommendations for school mental health professionals involved in culturally responsive and equity-centered community partnership work are offered. Abstract:The Nuestro Futuro Saludable partnership designed a critical service-learning intervention focused on health equity and action. The ten-week afterschool intervention was implemented in a Boston middle school. Youths who took part in the intervention were knowledgeable about the social determinants of health in their communities, as well as to the barriers to health. Our findings indicate that engaging young people in a meaningful way will be critical if health improvement efforts are to be realized. We found that a critical service-learning framework that incorporates elements of applied inquiry and critical pedagogy was effective as a health intervention and provided opportunities for action.
Enhancing outcomes: Culturally adapted social-emotional and behavioral interventions for rural black elementary learners at risk

Abstract:Educators are responsible for supporting positive school experiences for all students, including those with or at risk for emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). Students with or at risk for EBD experience multiple negative outcomes impacting their school years, and these negative outcomes extend past graduation. Social and emotional learning programs are being used by schools to build students' competency in areas designed to help them successfully manage the school environment and life in general. However, studies have not provided evidence that universal social-emotional learning (SEL) programs are effective for Black students. This study provides data on the efficacy of an intervention package comprised of the Strong Kids SEL Program and a Tier 2 culturally adapted check-in/check-out (CICO) with Black students in a rural district in an underserved community. Cultural adaptations presented for the SEL curriculum were based on developers' recommendations and teacher feedback from prior studies and incorporated focus groups. Behavior management support in the form of a culturally adapted CICO was provided to participants exhibiting externalizing behaviors disruptive to the learning process. Results indicated a functional relation between the intervention package culturally adapted (SEL + CICO) and a decrease in student rate of externalizing behavior and strong social validity across teachers and students. Hierarchical linear modeling showed a statistically significant decrease in externalizing behavior from baseline to intervention phases, with data suggesting the moderator of grade-level explained variability in the effectiveness of the intervention. Abstract:In the presence of peripheral atherosclerotic disease, inappropriate adeno sine release during exercise might promote excessive arteriolar dilation leading to steal phenomena and ischemia. In order to test this hypothesis, IV aminophylline (6 mg/kg over fifteen min utes), a dosage known to effectively block adenosine receptors, was acutely ad ministered—in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study design—in 13 patients with intermittent claudication and documented atherosclerotic disease. All pa tients performed two treadmill exercise tests at the same hour on two consecu tive days, five minutes after aminophylline or placebo administration randomly allocated. Pain-free time was 109±133 (mean±SD) seconds after placebo and 173±165 seconds after aminophylline (p < .01); maximum time to claudication was 273±191 seconds after placebo and 397±318 seconds after aminophylline (p < .05). The authors conclude that intravenous aminophylline markedly increases the walking capacity in patients with intermittent claudication, possibly by pre venting flow maldistribution phenomena through adenosine receptors block ade.

Abstract:Depression continues to be an ongoing threat to adolescent well-being with Black adolescents being particularly vulnerable to greater burdens of depression as well as lower mental health service utilization. Black adolescents are likely to have untreated depression due to social network influences, varied perceptions of services and providers, or self-stigma associated with experiencing depressive symptoms. Furthermore, if or when treatment is initiated, low engagement and early termination are common. To address this gap, a trial is being conducted to preliminarily test the effectiveness of an engagement intervention targeting Black adolescents with depression in school mental health services in New York City.

Abstract:We describe a community-engaged research process to co-create and implement an evidence-informed, diversity-focused body image program for early adolescents. Our team included middle school staff, students, and teachers, and university faculty and students. Team members had a diverse range of intersecting cis- and transgender, racial, sexuality, and disability identities. Specific steps to the research process included: (1) establishing team leads at each site to maintain a collaborative and non-hierarchical team structure; (2) bi-weekly advisory team meetings to establish program needs and discuss curriculum and implementation options; (3) a year-long youth co-design process to generate content ideas, pilot pieces of programming, and incorporate youth leadership through an equity lens; (4) inclusive program writing from members of socially marginalized groups; (5) program piloting to solicit feedback from teachers, facilitators, and students; and (6) collaboratively incorporating feedback. The resulting 8-session (6 hours total) Body Justice Project has both dissonance-based and media literacy foundations, with topics related to cultural appearance ideals, diet culture and non-diet nutrition, media and appearance pressure, and body autonomy. It is designed for in-class delivery to middle school students by trained college and youth co-facilitator teams. We emphasize guiding principles and lessons learned, along with next steps in implementation.

Abstract:With the proliferation of participatory approaches to promoting youth development such as Youth-Led Participatory Action Research (YPAR), it is more important than ever that researchers and practitioners understand how to create curriculum that will authentically engage youth of color. To that end, there are important lessons public health researchers can learn from the fields of community psychology, education, and social work, among others. We explore the benefits of a youth-led research and action curriculum steeped in critical pedagogy and critical race theory focused on public health. Youth of color ( N = 35) between the ages of 13 and 34 years from five U.S. cities were hired as researchers. The majority (57%) of youth were 16 or 17 years, and the gender split was female (57%) and male (43%). Key informant interviews with adults and qualitative data analysis techniques were employed to examine program products and outcomes. Materials were deductively coded for content related to critical pedagogy and race theory (e.g., empowerment, capacity building and community engagement, skill development) as well as conceptualizations of health. Findings indicate young people (a) began to think more consciously about health, what it means to be healthy, and the factors that influence health; (b) developed critical skills; and (c) described feeling empowered. When given resources and space to lead, we found youth to be insightful, resourceful, compassionate, and deeply committed to improving the lives of their peers, family members, and communities.

Abstract:Submandibular gland is an important human function organ. With the wide application of sialoendoscope and new understanding of IgG4 related sialadenitis, a lot of submandibular glands which were previously considered to be removed are preserved. However, some submandibular glands which might be preserved are still unfortunately sacrificed. Therefore, we advocate the popularization and promotion of new knowledge and techniques and should pay more attention to the protection of the function organ of submandibular gland.
Problem behavior and urban, low-income youth: a randomized controlled trial of positive action in Chicago

Abstract:Background: Youth problem behaviors remain a public health issue. Youth in low-income, urban areas are particularly at risk for engaging in aggressive, violent, and disruptive behaviors. Purpose: To evaluate the effects of a school-based social-emotional learning and health promotion program on problem behaviors and related attitudes among low-income, urban youth. Design: A matched-pair, cluster RCT. Setting/participants: Participants were drawn from 14 Chicago Public Schools over a 6-year period of program delivery with outcomes assessed for a cohort of youth followed from Grades 3 to 8. Data were collected from Fall 2004 to Spring 2010, and analyzed in Spring 2012. Intervention: The Positive Action program includes a scoped and sequenced K-12 classroom curriculum with six components: self-concept, social and emotional positive actions for managing oneself responsibly, and positive actions directed toward physical and mental health, honesty, getting along with others, and continually improving oneself. The program also includes teacher, counselor, family, and community training as well as activities directed toward schoolwide climate development. Main outcome measures: Youth reported on their normative beliefs in support of aggression and on their bullying, disruptive, and violent behaviors; parents rated youths' bullying behaviors and conduct problems; schoolwide data on disciplinary referrals and suspensions were obtained from school records. Results: Multilevel growth-curve modeling analyses conducted on completion of the trial indicated that Positive Action mitigated increases over time in (1) youth reports of normative beliefs supporting aggressive behaviors and of engaging in disruptive behavior and bullying (girls only) and (2) parent reports of youth bullying behaviors (boys only). At study end-point, students in Positive Action schools also reported a lower rate of violence-related behavior than students in control schools. Schoolwide findings indicated positive program effects on both disciplinary referrals and suspensions. Program effect sizes ranged from -0.26 to -0.68. Conclusions: These results extend evidence of the effectiveness of the Positive Action program to low-income, minority, urban school settings, and to middle school-aged youth.

Abstract:Post-translational modification of nuclear proteins by poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP-1) is involved in the regulation of DNA repair, cell death, and maintenance of genomic stability. Recently, several PARP-1 homologues have been identified constituting a family of poly(ADP-ribosyl)ating proteins. We cloned and sequenced the cDNAs of the mouse PARP-3 (Adprt3) gene encoding poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 3 and of the closely linked U3-55k gene coding for the U3 small nucleolar ribonucleoprotein complex-associated 55-kilodalton protein. The two genes are located in a head-to-head orientation on mouse chromosome 9 and are linked by an approximately 1.5-kb putative bi-directional promoter region. This gene arrangement is conserved between mouse and human orthologues. Three alternative non-coding 5'-end exons were found in the mouse PARP-3 mRNA. The expression patterns of PARP-3, U3-55k, PARP-2, and PARP-1 genes were determined using Northern blot with mRNA from various adult mouse tissues and organs. PARP-3 expression was found to be regulated in a tissue-specific manner. The highest expression of PARP-3 was detected in the skeletal muscle, high to moderate levels were found in the lung, liver, kidney, ovary, spleen and heart, while thymus, small intestine and colon contained lower levels of the PARP-3 transcripts. Notably, PARP-3 expression was barely detectable in the whole brain and testis mRNA. In contrast to PARP-3, the other three genes showed ubiquitous expression with less variable mRNA levels. Interestingly, the mouse and human PARP-2 gene has recently been shown to be connected via a bi-directional promoter with the gene for the RNase P RNA subunit (Amé et al., J. Biol. Chem. 276: 11092-11099, 2001). As both the U3-55k protein and the RNase P RNA are involved in the processing of precursor RNAs of the protein-synthesizing machinery (pre-rRNA and pre-tRNA, respectively), it is tempting to hypothesize that expression of some members of the two groups of genes (i.e. PARP vs. protein-synthesizing machinery RNA-processing genes) may be coordinately regulated under certain physiological or pathological conditions and/or in some cell types.
What Works in Service-Learning? Achieving Civic Outcomes, Academic Connection, Career Preparation, and Personal Growth in Students at Ngee Ann Polytechnic

Abstract:Service-learning (S-L) was adopted as a signature pedagogy in Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 2016. The present study investigated students' civic and academic learning, personal growth, and career preparation in S-L at the School of Humanities & Social Sciences, using mixed methods. The scales and subscales used in this study had acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha ranged from .71 to .93). Results showed that students perceived significant improvement to their civic outcomes when they participated in S-L compared to when they did not (n = 351), strong academic connection and career preparation development through the S-L experience (n = 832), and growth in interpersonal and personal development. Significant relationships were found between the student outcomes and S-L design and delivery features, such as perceived impact of S-L, preparedness for S-L, quality of reflection prompts, and amount of interaction with community. Frequency of reflection activities was significantly related to academic connection and career preparation but not civic outcomes. The findings suggest that student outcomes can be optimized through improvements in S-L course design and hold implications for faculty training and development.
Engaging the Faith Community in Designing a Church-Based Mental Health Screening and Linkage to Care Intervention

Abstract:African Americans are disproportionately burdened by mental health issues (e.g., stress, chronic depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder). Upon review of mental health local/state/national data, a highly-engaged faith-based Community Action Board (CAB) raised concerns about the mental health needs of African Americans and addressed mental health as a priority health area in African American Kansas City churches. African Americans tend to experience barriers to mental health services (e.g., limited access, high cost, mental health-related stigma, non-culturally tailored mental health care). African American churches have many strengths that could increase reach, acceptability feasibility, and impact of mental health interventions tailored for African Americans. The CAB conducted a health needs assessment survey (N=463; 11 churches) to identify health concerns and potential strategies to inform the design of a church-based mental health intervention. Using a faith-community-engaged approach, the CAB developed the survey and used its findings to design a religiously-tailored, multilevel mental health intervention focused on prevention, screening, and linkage to care. The needs assessment identified intervention strategies (e.g., church-based screening, stress reduction/exercise programs, pastors promoting mental health) that were: (1) rated as highly important/feasible to implement, (2) included in the intervention design, and (3) successfully implemented in African American churches by faith leaders and university students and faculty.

Abstract:School staff increasingly seek to implement evidence-based school mental health services to promote student mental health. However, barriers to accessing programming and support mean that implementing these programs is difficult. Popular strategies to address these challenges, like one time professional development, often fail to be effective or sustainable. This study used mixed methods to evaluate how a set of training activities-sequential online learning modules combined with interprofessional telementoring, following the extension for community healthcare outcomes (ECHO) model-influenced provision of school mental health services. School counselors, nurses, psychologists, and social workers (n = 46) participated in training activities, which included nine, cohort-based ECHO sessions and 12 modules. We used a concurrent mixed methods design in which quantitative (implementation data and pre-post surveys) and qualitative (posttraining focus groups with a subset of participants, n = 11) data were used to evaluate training. Quantitative results indicated statistically significant pre-post improvements in participants' clinical self-efficacy (d = .83) and knowledge of evidence-based practices (d = .37). Qualitative data corroborated quantitative results. Post training, focus groups described positive reactions, learning, and behavior change, particularly with respect to equitable service provision and interprofessional teaming. ECHO appeared to facilitate the application of evidence-based strategies to real-life practice and improved participants' understanding of effective coordination of services. Taken together, findings suggest that group-based telementoring may be a high-impact strategy for supporting the implementation of effective, culturally specific, and collaborative school mental health services. Abstract:Inconsistent program engagement is a common barrier in neighborhoods where families face significant structural, economic, and wellbeing challenges. Sulphur Springs is an under-served, low-income, predominantly Black community in Tampa, Florida where funding efforts have catalyzed targeted service responses, yet many agencies continue to report barriers to engaging families in programs. Ethnographic research methods were used to better understand the barriers to engagement in programs at a neighborhood family center. Analysis of in-depth interviews with parents ( n = 11) and staff ( n = 7) revealed four key areas where participants perceived engagement challenges, including neighborhood conditions, relevance and fit, understanding of Black families' needs, and program infrastructure. The authors highlight perspectives of parents and staff to give voice to important insights that are typically underrepresented in program development and illustrate the numerous—and often subtle—ways that racial ideologies inform program development and acceptance. This study offers suggestions for improving engagement by reconsidering approaches to programming that better meet the needs of Black families in neighborhoods like Sulphur Springs.
