Abstract:The paper goes out from the state of the art in the area of Industry 4.0 initiative of the most developed countries. There are also discussed reasons of Industry 4.0 development and implementation into existing still developed technologies. According to the last development, the term digital twin became a very often-used word. Authors explain differences in the content of the digital twin and recommend to use for the Industry 4.0 area the more appropriate and precise specified term – the Asset Administration Shell (AAS). Next parts of the contribution therefore deal with the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) in details to enable engineers, technicians and informatics from the praxis much more simple introduction in the Industry 4.0 problems and their solution. There is introduced and explained the structure of the AAS, the model and sub-models architecture, parameters and features in the contribution.

Abstract:The pace of reporting on Digital Twin (DT) projects continues to accelerate both in industry and academia. However, these experience reports often leave out essential characteristics of the DT, such as the scope of the system-under-study, the insights and actions enabled, and the time-scale of processing. A lack of these details could therefore hamper both understanding of these DTs and development of DT tools and techniques. Our previous work developed a DT description framework with fourteen characteristics as a checklist for experience report authors to better describe the capabilities of their DT projects. This report provides an extended example of reporting to highlight the utility of this description framework, focusing on the DT of an industrial drilling machine. Furthermore, we provide a mapping from our description framework to the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) which is an emerging standard for Industry 4.0 system integration. This mapping aids practitioners in understanding how our description framework relates to AAS, potentially aiding in description or implementation activities.

Abstract:Industry 4.0 supports the vision of networked machines in decentralized production plants across the value chain. Hence, it requires highly connected partners exchanging relevant data about products, processes, and production resources. This paper proposes the usage of data spaces and digital twins to enable this Industry 4.0 vision and investigates the building blocks to realize a data space for Industry 4.0, e.g., the integration of digital twins inside the data space based upon the latest specification of the Industry 4.0 Asset Administration Shell. A prototypical implementation shows the feasibility of storing product carbon footprints inside a digital twin and sharing it over a data space with other partners.
Model-driven realization of IDTA submodel specifications: The good, the bad, the incompatible?

Abstract:Asset Administration Shells are trending in Industry 4.0. In February 2024, the Industrial Digital Twin Association announced 84 and released 18 AAS submodel specifications. As an enabler on programming level, dedicated APIs are needed, for which, at this level of scale, automated creation is desirable. In this paper, we present a model-driven approach, which transforms extracted information from IDTA specifications into an intermediary meta-model and, from there, generates API code and tests. We show we can process all current IDTA specifications successfully leading in total to more than 50000 lines of code. However, syntactical variations and issues in the specifications impose obstacles that require human intervention or AI support. We also discuss experiences that we made and lessons learned.

Generation of Asset Administration Shell With Large Language Model Agents: Toward Semantic Interoperability in Digital Twins in the Context of Industry 4.0

Abstract:This research introduces a novel approach for achieving semantic interoperability in digital twins and assisting the creation of Asset Administration Shell (AAS) as digital twin model within the context of Industry 4.0. The foundational idea of our research is that the communication based on semantics and the generation of meaningful textual data are directly linked, and we posit that these processes are equivalent if the exchanged information can be serialized in text form. Based on this, we construct a "semantic node" data structure in our research to capture the semantic essence of textual data. Then, a system powered by large language models is designed and implemented to process the "semantic node" and generate standardized digital twin models (AAS instance models in the context of Industry 4.0) from raw textual data collected from datasheets describing technical assets. Our evaluation demonstrates an effective generation rate of 62-79%, indicating a substantial proportion of the information from the source text can be translated error-free to the target digital twin instance model with the generative capability of large language models. This result has a direct application in the context of Industry 4.0, and the designed system is implemented as a data model generation tool for reducing the manual effort in creating AAS model by automatically translating unstructured textual data into a standardized AAS model. The generated AAS model can be integrated into AAS-compliant digital twin software for seamless information exchange and communication. In our evaluation, a comparative analysis of different LLMs and an in-depth ablation study of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) mechanisms provide insights into the effectiveness of LLM systems for interpreting technical concepts and translating data. Our findings emphasize LLMs' capability to automate AAS instance creation and contribute to the broader field of semantic interoperability for digital twins in industrial applications. Abstract:The concept of digital twin (DT) is undergoing rapid transformation and attracting increased attention across industries. It is recognised as an innovative technology offering real-time monitoring, simulation, optimisation, accurate forecasting and bi-directional feedback between physical and digital objects. Despite extensive academic and industrial research, DT has not yet been properly understood and implemented by many industries, due to challenges identified during its development. Existing literature shows that there is a lack of a unified framework to build DT, a lack of standardisation in the development, and challenges related to coherent goals of DT in a multi-disciplinary team engaged in the design, development and implementation of DT to a larger scale system. To address these challenges, this study introduces a unified framework for DT development, emphasising reusability and scalability. The framework harmonises existing DT frameworks by unifying concepts and process development. It facilitates the integration of heterogeneous data types and ensures a continuous flow of information among data sources, simulation models and visualisation platforms. Scalability is achieved through ontology implementation, while employing an agent-based approach, it monitors physical asset performance, automatically detects faults, checks repair status and offers operators feedback on asset demand, availability and health conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed DT framework is validated through its application to a real-world case study involving five interconnected air compressors located at the Connected Facility at Devonport Royal Dockyard, UK. The DT automatically and remotely monitors the performance and health status of compressors, providing guidance to humans on fault repair. This guidance dynamically adapts based on feedback from the DT. Analyses of the results demonstrate that the proposed DT increases the facility's operation availability and enhances decision-making by promptly and accurately detecting faults.

Abstract:Recent technological developments and advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have enabled sophisticated capabilities to be a part of Digital Twin (DT), virtually making it possible to introduce automation into all aspects of work processes. Given these possibilities that DT can offer, practitioners are facing increasingly difficult decisions regarding what capabilities to select while deploying a DT in practice. The lack of research in this field has not helped either. It has resulted in the rebranding and reuse of emerging technological capabilities like prediction, simulation, AI, and Machine Learning (ML) as necessary constituents of DT. Inappropriate selection of capabilities in a DT can result in missed opportunities, strategic misalignments, inflated expectations, and risk of it being rejected as just hype by the practitioners. To alleviate this challenge, this paper proposes the digitalization framework, designed and developed by following a Design Science Research (DSR) methodology over a period of 18 months. The framework can help practitioners select an appropriate level of sophistication in a DT by weighing the pros and cons for each level, deciding evaluation criteria for the digital twin system, and assessing the implications of the selected DT on the organizational processes and strategies, and value creation. Three real-life case studies illustrate the application and usefulness of the framework.

Abstract:While digital twins (DTs) have achieved significant visibility, they continue to face a problem of lack of harmonisation regarding their interpretation and definition. This diverse and interchangeable use of terms makes it challenging for scientific activities to take place and for organisations to grasp the existing opportunities and how can these benefit their businesses. This article aims to shift the focus away from debating a definition for a DT. Instead, it proposes a conceptual approach to the digital twinning of engineering physical assets as an ongoing process with variable complexity and evolutionary capacity over time. To accomplish this, the article presents a functional architecture of digital twinning, grounded in the foundational elements of the DT, to reflect the various forms and levels of digital twinning (LoDT) of physical assets throughout their life cycles. Furthermore, this work presents UNI-TWIN—a unified model to assist organisations in assessing the LoDT of their assets and to support investment planning decisions. Three case studies from the road and rail sector validate its applicability. UNI-TWIN helps to redirect the discussion around DTs and emphasise the opportunities and challenges presented by the diverse realities of digital twinning, namely in the context of engineering asset management.

Abstract:Industry 4.0 is revolutionizing industrial production by bridging the physical and the virtual worlds and further improving digitalization. Two essential building blocks in industry 4.0 are digital twins (DT) and the internet of things (IoT). While IoT is about connecting resources and collecting data about the physical world, DTs are the virtual representations of resources organizing and managing information and being tightly integrated with artificial intelligence, machine learning and cognitive services to further optimize and automate production. The concepts of DTs and IoT are overlapping when it comes to describing, discovering and accessing resources. Currently, there are multiple DT and IoT standards covering these overlapping aspects created by different organizations with different backgrounds and perspectives. With regard to interoperability, which is presumably the most important aspect of industry 4.0, this barrier needs to be overcome by consolidation of standards. The objective of this paper is to investigate current DT and IoT standards and provide insights to stimulate this consolidation. Overlapping aspects are identified and a classification scheme is created and applied to the standards. The results are compared, aspects with high similarity or divergence are identified and a proposal for stimulating consolidation is presented. Consensus between standards are found regarding the elements a resource should consist of and which serialization format(s) and network protocols to use. Controversial topics include which query language to use for discovery as well as if geo-spatial, temporal and historical data should be explicitly supported.

Abstract:The concept of digital twins is one of the fundamental pillars of Industry 4.0. Digital twin allows the realization of a virtual model of a real system, enhancing the relevant performance (e.g., in terms of production rate, risk prevention, energy saving, and maintenance operation). Current literature presents many contributions pointing out the advantages that may be achieved by the definition of a digital twin of a water supply system. The Reference Architecture Model for Industry 4.0 introduces the concept of the Asset Administration Shell for the digital representation of components within the Industry 4.0 ecosystem. Several proposals are currently available in the literature considering the Asset Administration Shell for the realization of a digital twin of real systems. To the best of the authors' knowledge, at the moment, the adoption of Asset Administration Shell for the digital representation of a water supply system is not present in the current literature. For this reason, the aim of this paper is to present a methodological approach for developing a digital twin of a water supply system using the Asset Administration Shell metamodel. The paper will describe the approach proposed by the author and the relevant model based on Asset Administration Shell, pointing out that its implementation is freely available on the GitHub platform.

Abstract:Digital Twins will change how systems and products are engineered and operated. Individual virtual representations of assets help to develop, maintain and change single components or whole factories. Aerospace engineering, product design and intelligent manufacturing are hot spots for the use of Digital Twins. Simultaneously, globalized markets lead to a growing awareness of dependability and quality, which increases the importance of verification and validation. The Digital Twin could prove to be key enabler for efficient verification and validation processes. This paper presents the results of the literature review of approaches that use Digital Twins for verification and validation purposes. Many solutions have been found for a wide range of challenges in various fields of application. This survey discusses the underlying methods and the elements of Digital Twins already in use. Most research approaches focus on simulations and three methodological clusters of approaches sharing similar ideas were identified.

Abstract:Effective engineering asset management (EAM) is critical to economic development and improving livability in society, but its complexity often impedes optimal asset functionalities. Digital twins (DTs) could revolutionize the EAM paradigm by bidirectionally linking the physical and digital worlds in real time. There is great industrial and academic interest in DTs for EAM. However, previous review studies have predominately focused on technical aspects using limited life-cycle perspectives, failing to holistically synthesize DTs for EAM from the managerial point of view. Based on a systematic literature review, we introduce an analytical framework for describing DTs for EAM, which encompasses three levels or categories: DT 1.0 for technical EAM, DT 2.0 for technical−human EAM, and DT 3.0 for technical−environmental EAM. Using this framework, we identify what is known, what is unknown, and future directions at each level. DT 1.0 addresses issues of asset quality, progress, and cost management, generating technical value. It lacks multi-objective self-adaptive EAM, however, and suffers from high application cost. It is imperative to enable closed-loop EAM in order to provide various functional services with affordable DT 1.0. DT 2.0 accommodates issues of human−machine symbiosis, safety, and flexibility management, generating managerial value beyond the technical performance improvement of engineering assets. However, DT 2.0 currently lacks the automation and security of human−machine interactions and the managerial value related to humans is not prominent enough in it. Future research needs to align technical and managerial value with highly automated and secure DT 2.0. DT 3.0 covers issues of participatory governance, organization management, sustainable development, and resilience enhancement, generating macro social value. Yet it suffers from organizational fragmentation and can only address limited social governance issues. Numerous research opportunities exist to coordinate different stakeholders. Similarly, future research opportunities exist to develop DT 3.0 in a more open and complex system.

Abstract:Abstract The demand for individualized products drives modern manufacturing systems towards greater adaptability and flexibility. This increases the focus on data-driven digital twins enabling swift adaptations. Within the framework of cyber-physical systems, the digital twin is a digital model that is fully connected to the physical and digital assets. A digital model must follow a standardization for interoperable data exchange. Established ontologies and meta-models offer a basis in the definition of a schema, which is the first phase of creating a digital twin. The next phase is the standardized and structured modeling with static use-case specific data. The final phase is the deployment of digital twins into operation with a full connection of the digital model with the remaining cyber-physical system. In this deployment phase communication standards and protocols provide a standardized data exchange. A survey on the state-of-the-art of these three digital twin phases reveals the lack of a consistent workflow from ontology-driven definition to standardized modeling. Therefore, one goal of this paper is the design of an end-to-end digital twin pipeline to lower the threshold of creating and deploying digital twins. As the task of establishing a communication connection is highly repetitive, an automation concept by providing structured protocol data is the second goal. The planning and control of a line-less assembly system with manual stations and a mobile robot as resources and an industrial dog as the product serve as exemplary digital twin applications. Along this use-case the digital twin pipeline is transparently explained.

Abstract:Based on an ethnographic action research study for a Digital Twin (DT) deployment on an automated highway maintenance project, this paper reports some of the stumbling blocks that practitioners face while deploying a DT in practice. At the outset, the scope of the case study was broadly defined in terms of digitalization, and software development and deployment, which later pivoted towards the concept of Digital Twin during the collective reflection sessions between the project participants. Through an iterative learning cycle via discussions among the various project stakeholders, the case study led to uncovering the roadblocks in practice faced by the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) practitioners. This research finds that the practitioners are facing difficulty in: (1) Creating a shared understanding due to the lack of consensus on the Digital Twin concept, (2) Adapting and investing in Digital Twin due to inability to exhaustively evaluate and select the appropriate capabilities in a Digital Twin, and (3) Allocation of resources for Digital Twin development due to the inability to assess the impact of DT on the organizational conditions and processes.

Abstract:Abstract The role of a Digital Twin is increasingly discussed within the context of Cyber-Physical Production Systems. Accordingly, various architectures for the realization of Digital Twin use cases are conceptualized. There lacks, however, a clear, encompassing architecture covering necessary components of a Digital Twin to realize various use cases in an intelligent automation system. In this contribution, the added value of a Digital Twin in an intelligent automation system is highlighted and various existing definitions and architectures of the Digital Twin are discussed. Flowingly, an architecture for a Digital Twin and an architecture for an Intelligent Digital Twin and their required components are proposed, with which use cases such as plug and produce, self-x and predictive maintenance are enabled. In the opinion of the authors, a Digital Twin requires three main characteristics: synchronization with the real asset, active data acquisition from the real environment and the ability of simulation. In addition to all the characteristics of a Digital Twin, an Intelligent Digital Twin must also include the characteristics of Artificial Intelligence. The Intelligent Digital Twin can be used for the realization of the autonomous Cyber-Physical Production Systems. In order to realize the proposed architecture for a Digital Twin, several methods, namely the Anchor-Point-Method, a method for heterogeneous data acquisition and data integration as well as an agent-based method for the development of a co-simulation between Digital Twins were implemented and evaluated.

Abstract:SIMULATION, Ahead of Print. Digital twins are poised to improve the engineering, operation, and management of manufacturing facilities. However, implementing digital twins has been a challenge primarily due to a lack of resources and the absence of standardized digital twin frameworks and methods. This paper describes creating a digital twin of a robot workcell using available standards, tools, and methods. The workcell comprises collaborative robot arms, a computer numeric control (CNC) machine tool, and a coordinate measuring machine (CMM). The ISO 23247 standard provides a guideline for building the digital twin. Data are collected from physical devices and the MTConnect standard provides a format for communicating the data between the physical equipment and their digital counterparts. The machine components in the workcell are represented as models in the virtual world. This research shows that the above standards and methods support building a digital twin of a robot workcell. The data collected and communicated can be used to improve workcell functions such as quality management and predictive maintenance.

Abstract:AbstractIndustry 4.0 is a concept that has attracted much research and development over the last decade. At its core is the need to connect physical devices with their digital representations which essentially means establishing a digital twin. Currently, the technological development of digital twins has gathered much attention while the organizational and business aspects are less investigated. In response, the suitability of enterprise modeling and capability management for the purpose of developing and management of business-driven digital twins has been analyzed. A number of requirements from literature are summarized and two industrial cases have been analyzed for the purpose of investigating how the digital twin initiatives emerge and what forces drive the start of their implementation projects. The findings are discussed with respect to how Enterprise Modeling and the Capability-Driven Development method are able to support the business motivation, design and runtime management of digital twins.

Abstract:Abstract Digital transformation and the adoption of technologies in the AEC-sector can lead to efficiency gains in facility management (FM). Digital twins, that is a living representative of the physical asset building, can facilitate real-time data gathering, data monitoring, data-based decision making and support predictive management. The purpose of this study is to analyse the gap between theory and practice regarding the application of digital twins for FM and to understand the benefits and challenges connected with its implementation during the use phase of a building. Despite the growing interest in this topic in academia, the concept of digital twins in connection with FM is rarely employed in practice in the AEC-industry. The findings obtained through a literature review and a set of semi-structured interviews with experts in the field, show that the main challenges for digital twins in FM relate to the organisational culture and that a robust framework for information management is a benefit for digital twins’ implementation. The adoption of digital twins in the built environment needs to be considered in the context of digital transformation. The study supports practitioners with the adoption of digital technologies for the built asset and suggests that future research should examine in further depth the challenges of implementing digital twins.
