Abstract:Textile reinforced concrete (TRC) is a new cement-based composite material. It is the combination of directional fiber braid and high-performance fine concrete. Since 1999, DFG established SFB532 and SFB528 Research Center at RWTH Aachen University and began a systematic study of materials and structures on the TRC. Due to the excellent tensile strength and durability of fiber materials, the thickness of concrete cover is required to meet the anchoring requirements only. Therefore, the fiber is fit for thin-walled lightweight materials. The experiment studied the mechanical properties of hybrid carbon/glass fiber braid and basalt/glass fiber hybrid braid, a high-performance concrete and the TRC sheet. The aim is to develop a thin-walled structure of the TRC, which is suitable for plug-in building curtain wall. The results show that a high discrete of fiber tensile strength. And the tensile property of basalt fiber is lower than the carbon fiber. In addition, the high-performance fine concrete shows strong liquidity, compact structure, high strength, moderate shrinkage, and good interfacial adhesion, which is suitable for industrial use. Lastly, the bending performance of TRC plate with carbon fiber is good but the reinforced effect of basalt fiber is not obvious.

Abstract:Textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) is a variant of reinforced concrete in which textiles are used in place of steel reinforcing bars. Reinforcing the concrete with steel means increasing its tensile strength, but steel also corrodes and wears out over time. The TRC is a novel idea that has the potential to overcome these drawbacks. TRC is a composite reinforcing material that is made from cement and has the benefits of being resistant to corrosion, having a high bearing capacity, and performing well in terms of its fracture limit. The principal function of TRC in buildings has been as reinforcement and as a means of enhancing the ductility and performance of concrete. This experimental work utilizes a 145 gsm (grams squared per meter) alkali-resistant (AR) glass fiber textile mesh. Specimens were cast with and without fibers, and the number of layers was increased from 1 to 3 at 25 mm spacing. In this experimental work, the mechanical behavior of TRC was investigated by conducting tests on its impact, compressive, and flexural strengths. From these results, the TRC specimen exhibits more flexibility than the control specimen. The TRC specimen bends under force and returns to a new position when the load is removed, indicating a good energy absorption capability. As a result, it infers that the specimen with fibrehave the capacity to withstand a higher maximum load than conventional specimens. TRC has a greater fracture control system compared to conventional steel-reinforced concrete.

Abstract:Textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) is a composite material consisting of a concrete matrix with a high-performance reinforcement made of technical textiles. TRC offers unique mechanical properties for the construction industry, enabling the construction of lightweight, material-minimized structures with high load-bearing potential. In addition, compared with traditional concrete design, TRC offers unique possibilities to realize free-form, double-curved structures. After more than 20 years of research, TRC is increasingly entering the market, with several demonstrator elements and buildings completed and initial commercialization successfully finished. Nevertheless, research into this highly topical area is still ongoing. In this paper, the authors give an overview of the current and future trends in the research and application of textiles in concrete construction applications. These trends include topics such as maximizing the textile utilization rate by improving the mechanical load-bearing performance (e.g., by adapting bond behavior), increasing design freedom by utilizing novel manufacturing methods (e.g., based on robotics), adding further value to textile reinforcements by the integration of additional functions in smart textile solutions (e.g., in textile sensors), and research into increasing the sustainability of TRC (e.g., using recycled fibers).

Abstract:Textile reinforced concrete is a rather promising structural material which improves characteristics of traditional materials in many ways. In this paper, based on uniaxial tension experiments of TRC plates, the loading behavior of TRC plates and influence factors on their ultimate load capacity are discussed. The main parameter in the experiments is textile ratio. With the increasing of textile ratio, the efficiency of fibers decreases in a linear way, and the cracking performance is ameliorated. Moreover, a calculation formula is proposed taking the textile ratio into consideration to forecast the ultimate bearing capacity of TRC plates. Finally, according to the mixture law and ACK model, the stress-strain curve of TRC plates is simplified as a trilinear model. Providing a theoretical foundation, this investigation extends further application of TRC in practice.

Abstract:Textile reinforced concrete (TRC) is especially suitable for the thin-walled and light-weight structural elements with a high load-bearing capacity. For this thin element, the concrete cover thickness is an important factor in affecting the mechanical and anti-crack performance. Therefore, the influences of the surface treatment of the textile and mixing polypropylene fiber into the concrete on the properties of the components with different cover thickness were experimentally studied with four-point bending tests. The experimental results show that for the components with the same cover thickness, sticking sand on epoxy resin-impregnated textile and adding short fiber into the concrete are helpful to improve their mechanical performance. The 2–3 mm cover thickness is enough to meet the anchorage requirements of the reinforcement fiber and the component has good crack pattern and mechanical behavior at this condition. Comparison between the calculated and the experimental values of flexural capacity reveals satisfactory agreement. Finally, based on the calculation model of the crack spacing of reinforced concrete structures, the crack extension of this thin-wall component was qualitatively analyzed and the same results with the experimental were obtained.

Abstract:Textile reinforced concrete (TRC) materials with high strength and excellent heat resistance might considerably enhance the performance of structures under thermal conditions. This study examined thirty concrete columns, each reinforced with varying TRC configurations, and subjected them to different high-temperature scenarios. Axial compression experiments were subsequently carried out to assess the impact of TRC on concrete's performance at elevated temperatures. Key variables in these tests included different textile layers (0-4 layers), and a temperature range extending from room temperature to 800 degrees C. The application of TRC was found to facilitate more gradual failure progress during compression tests. In contrast to the unconfined specimens, whose stress-strain curves exhibited a parabolic pattern, those reinforced with TRC displayed a hardening segment at temperatures up to 400 degrees C. The presence of TRC jackets significantly improved the compressive strength, the ultimate axial strain, and the energy dissipation, both at room temperature and after high-temperature treatments. Furthermore, this paper proposed an innovative model for estimating the residual strength of TRC-confined cylinders after being exposed to various temperatures. This model accounted for the impact of high temperature on the residual bearing capacity of unconfined cylinders, the modulus of elasticity for fibers, and the confinement effectiveness coefficient.

Abstract:Uniaxial tensile experiments of textile reinforced concrete（TRC） plates and the results were detailed presented in this paper.Then the mechanical properties of textile reinforced concrete and its main influence factors on ultimate loading capacity were studied.And the concept of critical textile ratio was proposed.The mechanical properties of textile reinforced concrete plate were discussed at low textile ratios.When textile ratio was larger than the critical textile ratio,the ultimate bearing capacity exceeds the cracking load,and there was no sudden drop during the loading process.With the increase of textile ratio,the efficiency of fibers decreases in a linear way.And strength of fibers was not fully utilized.Moreover,the crack form was also investigated on different textile ratios.With the increase of textile ratio,cracking space reduces and cracking width decreases as well.Finally,according to the mixture law and ACK model,the stress-strain curve of TRC plates is simplified as a trilinear model.The calculation formula was proposed taking the textile ratio into consideration to forecast the ultimate bearing capacity of TRC plates.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental investigation into the influence of bond characteristics between textile and matrix on the mechanical behavior of textile-reinforced concrete (TRC). Two types of tests were performed, i.e. pullout test and uniaxial tensile test. Self-compacting fine-grain concrete was adopted. Two kinds of hybrid textile, consisting of both carbon and E-glass yarns, were specially prepared for this study. The experimental results show that sticking sands on the textile after epoxy resin impregnation can improve the interfacial property between textile and matrix. The specimens with textile of 10mmx10mm mesh have stronger bond strength than those with textile of 25mmx25mm mesh, and can reach the maximum tensile strength of yarns when the initial bond length is between 30mm and 35mm. Moreover, sticking sands on the textile can improve the multiple cracks form and the ultimate bearing capacity of TRC under uniaxial tensile load. Specimens with textile of 10mmx10mm mesh have higher first-crack loads than those with textile of 25mmx25mm mesh whether or not the textile surface treatment was conducted, and also have better crack distribution. Finally, based on the experimental results from TRC under uniaxial tensile load, a double linear constitutive equation of stress-strain relationship of carbon fiber yarn is provided in this paper.

Abstract:Textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) is a new high performance cementitious composite material, which not only has superior corrosion resistance but also can effectively limit the development of concrete cracks and make the crack width and spacing of concrete become smaller. However, due to the brittle feature of fiber materials, the TRC structural member has no distinct failure symptom when it arrives at its ultimate load. At the same time, ordinary reinforced concrete (RC) elements have large dead weight and can not efficiently restrict the expansion of the main crack of structures because of the restriction of their special cover thickness. In order to overcome the disadvantages of both the TRC and the RC, a new architecture reinforced with textile- combined steel is proposed in this study, making full use of the advantages of the above two structures. The cover concrete at the tension zone of an RC element is partially replaced with TRC and thus the steel reinforcements replaced with textiles are subtracted. Compared with the old one, the new structure has less dead weight and has the merits of service safety and good durability. The flexural development process of the proper beam with this new structure is investigated in this paper and based on the plane section assumption, analytical equations are derived by using nonlinear analysis theory, including the load-carrying capacity at different stages and moment-curvature relationship and mid-span deflection during the entire loading process. Comparison between the calculated and the experimental results reveals satisfactory agreement and thus verifies the feasibility of the equations.
Investigation on the Flexural Behavior of Concrete Members Reinforced with Epoxy Resin-Impregnated Textiles

Abstract:Textile reinforced concrete (TRC) members reinforced with the fiber materials: AR glass or carbon having no plastic capacity have no distinct failure symptom when the ultimate load is reached, and this limits their application to load-bearing. Therefore, in this research, a new method of adding thin steel bars into TRC was studied and the analytical prediction of the flexural response of TRC members was investigated. Two types of specimens (Series A and Series B) were prepared to verify the validity of the bending theory. Results from Series A specimens show that the compression constitutive models of concrete adopted in this study show no significant influence on the calculated results, and the experimental results of the specimens reinforced only with the textile have the same trend as the calculated results. Results from Series B specimens indicate that the abrupt fracture of TRC can be overcome by a combination of textile and steel bars with high ductility. Comparison between the calculated results and the experimental results of the specimens with textile and thin steel bars reveals satisfactory agreement.

Abstract:This study experimentally evaluated the performance of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls, with and without basalt textile reinforced concrete (BTRC) strengthening, under quasi-static in-plane lateral loading tests. Five half-scaled specimens were constructed using recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) bricks, including unreinforced and BTRC reinforced walls. The first URM wall served as a control specimen, while the remaining four specimens featured varying strengthening configurations, achieved by changing the number of textile layers (two and four) in the BTRC overlay and the strengthening patterns (single and double side). The failure modes, axial deformation behavior, lateral resistance, deformability, stiffness degradation, energy dissipation, and equivalent viscous damping of the tested walls were examined. BTRC strengthening altered the failure mode of URM walls from diagonal cracking accompanied by rocking to rocking and slight shear sliding, thereby maintaining the integrity of the wall at large lateral displacements. Increasing the textile layer enhanced lateral resistance and deformability. Applying a BTRC overlay to a single side of the URM wall yielded satisfactory improvements, with even greater efficiency observed when an equal amount of textiles was evenly applied on both sides. Finally, by taking the contributions of vertical and horizontal fiber yarns into account, a new model involving different failure modes was proposed to estimate the ultimate lateral resistance of BTRC-strengthened masonry walls, showing good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract:Numerous studies have investigated the behavior of textile reinforced mortar (TRM)-confined concrete, yielding various stress-strain models predominantly derived from fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP)-confined concrete. Yet, these models frequently overlook the intricate constitutive behavior of TRM materials and inadequately capture how TRM delivers its confinement effects. This often leads to inaccurate representation of the true characteristics of the confinement system, particularly the crucial role of mortar. This paper focuses on the impact of variations in textile layers and mortar matrix strength on the stress-strain behavior of basalt TRM (BTRM)-confined concrete, aiming to enhance our understanding of the confinement mechanism. Additionally, the study critically evaluates the key components of an existing analysis-oriented stress-strain model for FRP-confined concrete and introduces a refined version that more precisely depicts the behavior of confined concrete. This refined model integrates an identified confinement mechanism to provide accurate predictions of BTRM-confined concrete behavior. Our results reveal that low-grade mortar significantly decreases the actual confinement stiffness of BTRM jackets, inducing a steeper decline in the stress-strain curve, while high-strength mortar slightly diminishes the hoop rupture strain. To address the challenges of quantifying the complex confinement effect-compounded by the variable stress state and constitutive behavior of TRM-a novel coefficient, termed km, is introduced to gauge the influence of mortar strength on the confinement stiffness within the confining pressure equation. Predictive outcomes, including stress-strain and axial-to-lateral strain curves, show close alignment with experimental data, particularly in the slope at the plateau stage. This research significantly advances the quantitative understanding of TRM confinement effects and proposes the potential for designing more ductile structures using these materials, which could lead to enhanced resilience against seismic events and other structural challenges.

Abstract:Textile-reinforced composite (TRC) is a new material composed of finely grained cement-based concrete and textile grids, which can be a substitute for fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) in strengthening applications. The diversity of the textile grid results in a difference in bond behaviors at the textile–matrix interface, which influences the tensile properties of TRC. Several researchers have investigated the tensile behaviors of TRC, mainly concentrating on the matrix strength, the content of short synthetic fibers, and the number of textile grids; discussions on the textile grid geometry, especially the coupling effect between the textile grid form and matrix category, remained limited. Therefore, this paper focuses on the effects of three carbon textile grids on the tensile behavior of TRC through a uniaxial tensile test; the design parameters also include the textile reinforcement ratio and matrix category. Twenty-seven groups of tensile samples were manufactured to investigate the effect of each variable on the crack distribution, failure pattern, stress–strain curve and characteristic parameter. The test results showed that flattening the roving diameter and especially thinning the coating depth ameliorated the matrix-to-textile permeability, and consequently improved the tensile mechanical properties of TRC. The enhancement level of tensile strength by increasing the textile reinforcement ratio was lower than that by optimizing textile grid form. In terms of different textile grid forms, the effect of the matrix category on the tensile performance of TRC showed significant differences. Finally, an analytical model is presented to forecast the stress–strain behavior of TRC with textile rupture failure.

A Study on Thin Concrete Plate Reinforced with Textile

Abstract:To understand the mechanism that textile restricts the cracking of concrete,the test of bond properties between fibers and concrete,and mechanism properties of textile reinforced concrete(TRC) one-way slabs under four-point loading were performed.The results proved that epoxy resin impregnating,sand covering,prestressing can improve the bond between fibers and concrete so that cracks of TRC slab become finer and the spaces between them become closer.Increasing the content of textile also improves the cracking behavior of concrete.Prestressing also increases cracking load and limiting load of TRC slab.The analyse of ultimate bearing moment and cracking behavior of TRC are performed based on plane cross-section assumption and the calculated results are in agreement with those gained in experiments.

Abstract:It is well known that the failure mode of traditional cementitious composite components under tensile loading exhibits a macro single crack pattern. Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) typically possess strain hardening property, prominent toughness and superior durability, and the failure pattern of ECC components involves multiple fine cracks under tensile loading even at ultimate tensile strain. Textile reinforced concrete (TRC) is a new type of continuous long fiber reinforced cementitious composites. Rovings are placed along the direction of principal stress so that the reinforcing effect can be significantly enhanced. In order to develope new type of anticracking technique for concrete structures, a new cementitious composite reinforced by a combination of carbon textile and short-cut PVA fiber was proposed, and four-point bending experiments of specimens were performed. The experimental results show that crack resistance and control can be achieved when both carbon textile and short-cut PVA fiber are combined as reinforcements. Accordingly, the durability and service life of concrete structures would be greatly enhanced due to combining the advantages of both ECC and TRC. Comparing with TRC, the influences of the surface treatment of textile, water-binder ratio and volume content of PVA fiber on the crack resistance and bearing capacity of the new material were also investigated.

Abstract:One typical application of textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) is as a confining material for concrete. The compressive behavior of TRM-confined concrete is often predicted by referring to the models of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP)-confined concrete. Such reference may be inappropriate because TRM with apparent axial stiffness and nonlinear stress-strain behavior differs from linear elastic FRP. This paper first presents the experiments and analyses of the results to reveal the confinement mechanism of basalt TRM (BTRM) and then proposes an analysis-oriented stress-strain model for BTRM-confined concrete. Twelve compression tests were carried out on concrete columns with and without BTRM and with different textile layers (0-4 layers). Deformations of the BTRM shells and the concrete cores were measured in parallel to understand the mechanical behaviors of the shells/cores and their interactions during loading, i.e., confinement mechanism. The BTRM shell not only improved the compressive strength and the ultimate strain due to the confinement effect but also provided axial resistance through shear stresses at the core-shell interface. Both effects were quantified by a newly established model of which the key novel feature is the updating of the confinement pressure equations based on a careful description of core-shell interactions. The confinement pressure induced by the BTRM shell is separately evaluated in elastic and damaging stages differentiated by the cracking of the mortar matrix. Tensile Behavior of Basalt Textile Reinforced Concrete: Effect of Test Setups and Textile Ratios

Abstract:The clevis-grip tensile test is usually employed to evaluate the mechanical properties of textile reinforced concrete (TRC) composites, which is actually a bond test and is unsuitable for determining reliable design parameters. Thus, the clevis-grip tensile test needs further improvement to obtain foreseeable results concerning TRC tensile behavior. This paper presents the experimental results of twenty-one tension tests performed on basalt TRC (BTRC) thin plates with different test setups, i.e., clevis-grip and improved clevis-grip, and with different textile ratios. The influences of test setups and textile ratios on crack patterns, failure mode, and tensile stress-strain curves with characteristic parameters were analyzed in depth to judge the feasibility of the new test setup. The results indicated that with the new test setup, BTRC composites exhibited textile rupture at failure; in addition, multi-cracks occurred to the BTRC composites as the textile ratio exceeded 1.44%. In this case, the obtained results relied on textile properties, which can be considered reliable for design purposes. The modified ACK model with a textile utilization rate of 50% provided accurate predictions for the tensile stress-strain behavior of the BTRC composite derived from the improved test setup. The proposed test setup enables the adequate utilization of BTRC composite and the reliability of obtained results related to the occurrence of textile rupture; nevertheless, further work is required to better understand the key parameters affecting the textile utilization rate, such as the strength of the concrete matrix.

In order to overcome the above disadvantages, a new architecture reinforced with a combination of the textile and steel bar was presented in this study. The analytical formulae of the proper beam using this new structure were derived, including the load-carrying capacity at different stages and load vs. mid- span deflection relationship during the entire loading process. The theoretical values were compared with the experimental values. It is shown that the theoretical values coincide with the experimental values well and the feasibility of the formulae is verified.

Abstract:The structural performance can be enhanced without increasing the section size of the component when the new composite of textile reinforced concrete （TRC） is applied to strengthen and retrofit existing structures. However, due to the brittle feature of fiber materials, tensile failure would occur if the ultimate tensile strength of textile is reached, which is unsafe for structures. Therefore, for a single rectangular beam, two types of limit failure states of beams strengthened with TRC are presented for different amounts of textile, and for each state, the relationship between the textile ratio and the steel reinforcement ratio is derived. Based on the plane section assumption, calculation methods for the ultimate bearing capacity of the normal section of the component strengthened with TRC in three types of failure mode are also presented, including first load and secondary load. The experimental results show that the first failure mode is unfavorable to the component and the calculated values of ultimate bearing capacity agree well with the experimental values.
Investigation on the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beam strengthened with textile-reinforced concrete

Abstract:From the point of improving the interfacial bond between the textile and the fine grained concrete in textile reinforced concrete(TRC) and the interfacial characteristics of old and new concrete,the flexural performance of reinforced concrete(RC) beams strengthened with TRC was studied.The experimental results show that sticking sands on the epoxy resin-impregnated textile can make its anti-crack ability better exerted and thus the crack-control and reinforcing function of TRC layer can be fully utilized,and embedding U-shaped pins into the old concrete contributes to improve the whole mechanical behavior of RC beams strengthened with TRC,but smearing interfacial agent on the surface of the old concrete has almost no effect on the beams.In addition,mixing polypropylene fiber into fine grained concrete is helpful to enhance the initial cracking load of the component,and when the ratio of steel reinforcement is constant,increasing the ratio of textile reinforcement in TRC can effectively delay the development of main cracks of the structure,and decrease the crack width and the crack spacing and significantly improve the yield load and ultimate bearing capacity of the beams.Finally,based on the bending design theory of RC elements,this paper simulates the curves of load vs.mid-span deflection of RC beams reinforced with TRC.Comparison between the calculated and the experimental results reveals satisfactory agreement and thus verifies that the calculation method is practicable.
