Abstract:Crosslinked networks with thermally reversible linkages, e.g. Diels-Alder networks, undergo depolymerization at elevated temperatures and polymerization at relative low temperatures. This depolymerization, repolymerization sequence enables network rearrangement, which can result in intriguing properties cannot be achieved in conventional thermosetting polymers, such as surface welding. In this study, we establish a molecular dynamics computational approach involving the depolymerization, repolymerization reaction sequence to investigate the surface welding process of Diels-Alder networks. In this approach, two separate crosslinked Diels-Alder networks are brought in contact to allow depolymerization and interdiffusion at elevated temperatures, as well as subsequent repolymerization and interfacial linkages formation at relative low temperatures. The extent of depolymerization is correlated to temperature utilizing the van't Hoff equation. The influences of welding temperature and welding time on the interfacial structure are investigated by analyzing the interfacial linkages distribution, interpenetration depth, and minimal path length. The mechanical responses of interfaces welded under different conditions are further discussed. Our results show that when the welding temperature is below the gel-point temperature, increasing welding time shortens the minimal path length and reduces the extensibility of the welded interface. The interfacial strength can reach the bulk value with increasing welding time when the welding temperature is above the gel-point temperature. This study provides insights into the molecular mechanisms that govern the mechanical responses of welded Diels-Alder networks and can be helpful to guide the selections of suitable welding conditions.
Temporal spatial transfer characteristics and cross-scale fusion behavior mechanism of interface temperature in induction welding of plain carbon fiber polyphenylene sulfide

Abstract:The intricate multiphysics coupling conditions and nonlinear characteristics inherent in carbon fiber composite induction welding render the temperature transfer properties of the interface and the fusion connection mechanism across different scales ambiguous. In this study, a transient 3D finite element model was developed to simulate the induction welding process of carbon fiber reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (CF/PPS) composites, utilizing an electromagnetic-thermal multiphysics coupling mechanism. This investigation revealed that the electromagnetic effect leads to the accumulation of magnetic flux and spatial constraints, thereby triggering an eddy current concentration effect at the interface, which serves as an additional influencing factor in induction welding's edge effect. Simultaneously, the temperature distribution at the induction welding interface exhibits a gradient characteristic over both time and space: fluctuations in the current heat source result in a pronounced gradient distribution pattern of 225 %-680 % in welding interface temperature differences, accompanied by a 43.29 % reduction in shear strength. Notably, this study delves into the intricate origin of the induction welding heat source, elucidating that the generation of induced current in the magnetic field by carbon fiber overlap contributes to volumetric heat induction. This facilitates the welding process to some extent, despite the significantly lower heat contribution compared to thermally conductive wire meshes. In conclusion, to gain deeper insights into the impact of heat input on the fusion behavior of the bonding interface, SEM analysis was conducted on the experimental samples to examine the fusion morphology of the induction welding interface. Additionally, the method of EDS elemental analysis has also been used to investigate the generation and fusion mechanisms of welding defects. The amalgamation of numerical simulation technology and multi-scale material characterization serves as a methodological guide for researching the welding mechanisms of composite materials and even extends to investigations within the domain of metal connections. Furthermore, it paves the way for exploring a multidimensional research horizon in the realm of material joining and molding.

Abstract:Laser transmission welding (LTW), a technique to join thermoplastic components, involves a laser beam passing through a laser-transmitting part and then being absorbed by the laser-absorbing part at the weld interface. To form a strong bond, it is important that the weld interface be exposed to sufficient heat to melt the polymer without degrading it. A lap-joint geometry was investigated and the interaction between a stationary laser beam and the plastic was observed using a thermal imaging camera. Several coatings on the surface observed by the camera were evaluated. Time histories and temperature distribution on the sample surface transverse to the joint interface were obtained. Soot-coated surface was found to heat up in response to the scattered laser light, providing means for estimation of the scattered light intensity. The LTW welding process was modeled in three dimensions using a commercial finite element solver. This thermal model addresses the heating and cooling stages in a laser welding process in detail, including the effects of laser beam profile and laser beam scattering in a semicrystalline material. The model matched well the temperature distributions obtained by thermal imaging observations on the laser-absorbing part.

Abstract:Laser welding technology and investigation of temperature distribution can serve as an important criterion for performing high-quality joints. In this experimental study, dissimilar laser welding is performed between stainless steel 304 (S·S 304) and Inconel 625 alloys. The temperature is measured by changing such parameters of laser as laser power, welding speed and nozzle distance. The parameters variations are 300–400 W, 240–480 mm/min and 0–4 mm for the laser power, welding speed and nozzle distance, respectively. Examining the parameters shows that the change in the laser power due to temperature changes had a greater effect on temperature changes around the Inconel 625 side melt pool; also, the rate of change was about twice that of S·S 304. In the case of the S·S 304 alloy, the temperature increase was occurred at a slower rate and the evaporation rate of the material on the S·S304 side is higher than that of Inconel 625 superalloy. As a result, the rate of temperature increase is slower and part of the laser energy is used to evaporate S·S 304. The microstructural changes in the boundary of the fusion zone with the base metal Inconel 625 are clearly visible.

Abstract:This study, based on the Simufact Welding analysis software, established a three-dimensional finite element computational model according to actual welding conditions. Using a combined volumetric heat source, we analyzed the magnitude and distribution of residual stress after laser arc composite welding of dissimilar aluminum alloys, and validated the results with experimental data. The influence of different preheating temperatures on the variation rule of residual stress in each part of the weldment was explored. The results showed that the calibration results of the combined volumetric heat source model were ideal, and that the simulation results of transverse and longitudinal residual stress were in good agreement with the actual results. The average residual stress in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the 5083-H112 aluminum alloy was about 190 MPa, which is close to the yield strength of the base metal at room temperature (193 MPa); the average residual stress at the weld seam was about 230 MPa; and the average residual stress in the HAZ of the 6063-T6 aluminum alloy was about 80 MPa. In addition, preheating before welding has a positive effect on reducing residual stress after welding. The optimal preheating temperature for the 5083-H112 aluminum alloy is about 170°C, and for 6063-T6 aluminum alloy it is about 220°C.

Abstract:This study focused on dissimilar welding characterization of Inconel 600 and duplex 2205 stainless steel using central composite design (CCD) of experiments the response surface methodology (RSM). This study determined the effect of laser welding parameters and the reactions of the temperature field on the melt pool, the mechanical characteristics of the weld joint, and the geometry of the melt pool. According to the ANOVA results, the power of laser and focal distance were found to be the most influential factors on the temperature of both Inconel 600 and duplex stainless steel. The weld joint's tensile strength and elongation were significantly influenced by laser power and focal distance. Increasing the laser power from 250 to 450 W raised the tensile strength from 250 to 550 MPa. The Mo rich phases formed at the inter-dendritic region according to the EDS phase analysis results in loss of ductility and the resultant tensile strength of the samples failure from the fusion zone adjacent to the duplex stainless steel. At high laser power levels, the samples fractured from fusion zone while at lower laser powers below 350 W, the samples fractured from the HAZ and the areas adjacent to the duplex steel fusion line. The micro-hardness value of the weld joint at different laser power of 525 W and 375 W was increased to the maximum values of 370 and 325 HV, respectively from the fusion line of Inconel 600 to the center of the fusion zone. Further, molten pool microstructure of the dissimilar joint zone was mainly composed of a cellular and columnar dendritic structure Variations in melt flow, temperature gradient and solidification rate from the molten scan line to the weld center clearly changed the grain growth and the resultant microstructure in different areas of the fusion zone. By transferring the laser light to the center of the Inconel 600 and duplex stainless steel joint, the molten pool depth was increased from 0.2 to 1.5 mm.

Abstract:Ti-6Al-4 V titanium alloy (TC4) and carbon fiber reinforced resin matrix composites (CFRTP) were successfully connected by laser welding after adding PA6 or epoxy as the interlayer. Experiments and simulations were performed to clarify the influence of the interlayers on the joint characteristics, including the strength, interfacial microstructure, failure behavior and joining mechanism under different laser heat inputs (LHI). The results showed that with the increasing heat inputs, the joint strength first increased and then decreased in accordance with the degree of melting/decomposition of the PA6/epoxy interlayer. When the interlayer was PA6, the highest tensile strength of 3428 N was generated under 38.5 J/mm. When the interlayer was epoxy, the highest tensile strength of 3855 N was generated under 45 J/mm. For each interlayer, there was an optimal LHI, when the LHI was lower than the optimal value, the interlayer was not completely melted; Otherwise, the high temperature at the interface can easily damage the CFRTP. All joints regardless of the types of interlayer demonstrated three fracture modes. Both the PA6 and epoxy interlayers can improve the heat distribution on surface of the CFRTP, leading to an increase in melting zone of the resins and thus a joint strength improvement.

Abstract:Today, fiber reinforced materials are present in a wide field of industrial applications. Short glass fiber reinforced composites are used in automotive, aerospace, and medical sectors. In the last couple of years, fiber reinforced thermoplastics have gained importance as a construction material, especially for lightweight assembly. There are different methods of joining thermoplastic materials such as vibration, resistance, and induction welding. A more advanced process is the laser transmission welding, which can be characterized by its excellent reproducibility, high flexibility, and potential for automation. Laser transmission welding can be applied for joining unreinforced or glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic parts. This welding process was transferred to heat conduction welding for joining thermoplastic carbon fiber reinforced plastics to itself. The goal of these investigations was to determine the influence of the material thickness on the weld seam quality.

Abstract:In order to investigate the mechanism of laser welding of carbon fiber reinforced plastics ( CFRP ) and stainless steel, and find out the effect of different process parameters on welding quality, a 3-D finite element model based on heat conduction welding was built by ANSYS. The distributions of temperature field and stress field were calculated by ANSYS. The effect of process parameters, including laser power, scanning welding and spot diameter, on welding width and welding depth was investigated. And the influence of welding residual stress on the quality of welding was also investigated. The results show that temperature field and residual stress distributions can be rapidly and effectively simulated by the proposed finite element model. Welding width and depth are affected by laser power, scanning welding and spot diameter. The calculated distribution and the theoretical distribution of residual stress agree well. The result confirms that the model is reliable. The result is helpful to obtain high quality welded joints of CFRP-stainless steel.
Effect of Laser Micro-Texturing on Laser Joining of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermosetting Composites to TC4 Alloy

Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced thermosetting composites (CFRTS) and TC4 alloy are important structural materials for lightweight manufacturing. The hybrid structure of these two materials has been widely used in the aerospace field. However, the CFRTS-TC4 alloy joint formed by the traditional connection method has many challenges, such as poor environmental adaptability and stress concentration. Laser micro-texturing of metal surface-assisted laser connection of CFRTS and TC4 alloy has great potential in improving joint strength. In order to study the effect of laser micro-texturing on the laser bonding of CFRTS and TC4 alloy, the simulation and experimental research of laser welding of TC4 alloy and CFRTS based on laser micro-textures with different scanning spacings were carried out, and the interface hybrid pretreatment method of laser cleaning and laser plastic-covered treatment was introduced to assist the high-quality laser bonding of heterogeneous joints. The results showed that the established finite element model of CFRTS-TC4 alloy laser welding can predict the temperature field distribution of the joint during the welding process and reflect the forming mechanism of the joint. The laser micro-textures with different scanning spacings will lead to a difference in the temperature field distribution on the polyamide (PA6) interface, which leads to a change in heat input on the CFRTS surface. When the laser scanning spacing is 0.3 mm, the joint strength can reach 14.3 MPa. The failure mechanism of the joint mainly includes the cohesive failure of the internal tear of the carbon fiber and the interfacial failure of the interface between the PA6 resin and the TC4 alloy.

Ultrasonic welding of CF/PEEK composites: Influence of welding parameters on interfacial temperature profiles and mechanical properties

Abstract:This work focuses on ultrasonic (US) welding of CF/PEEK composite containing a PEI layer at the interface. Welding time, load and amplitude are defined as the welding parameters. The influence of each parameter is assessed by temperature measurement and mechanical tests on US welding specimens. 80-μm diameter thermocouples are integrated into the interfacial polymer layer for in-situ monitoring of the maximum temperature profile during the welding phase. Only welding time and welding load have an influence on both temperatures and lap shear strengths (LSS). The highest LSS are close to 50 MPa, and the temperature achieved in those cases is around 580°C. Interfacial fractures occur in both PEI and PEEK. PEI-based fracture is mostly brittle whereas PEEK-based fracture is a competition between brittle and ductile fracture. Finally, a fracture within the PEI/PEEK blend can occur. Raman spectroscopy is effectively used to quantify the thickness of this blend zone, it is about 0.075 mm.

Abstract:Recent years have seen wider application of laser transmission welding (LTW) as a means for joining plastic parts. This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) transient thermal model of LTW solved with the finite element method (FEM). A modified T-like joint geometry was modelled for unreinforced polyamide (PA6) specimens. This thermal model addressed the heating and cooling stages in a laser welding process with a moving laser beam. In a previous study, the authors have showed that the two-dimensional (2D) model has the potential to predict the molten zone depth as well as transient temperature distribution along the weld line. This paper eliminates some simplifying assumptions made in the previous studies and takes into account the heat conduction along the beam travel direction.
Chlorpropamide-alcohol flushing in relation to macroangiopathy and peripheral neuropathy in non-insulin dependent diabetes.

Abstract:Seventy patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDD) were studied for the chlorpropamide-alcohol flush (CPAF), first degree family history of diabetes, macroangiopathy and for peripheral neuropathy. Positive CPAF challenge tests were found in 65% of the tested subjects and in 77% if there was a family history of diabetes. Signs of macroangiopathy (loss of foot pulses) were significantly (p less than 0.05) less common in the CPAF positive than in the CPAF negative diabetics with a duration of diabetes of ten years or less. With a longer duration this difference between the two groups was reduced. Also signs of peripheral neuropathy (abnormal vibration sense) were less common (p less than 0.05) in the CPAF positive diabetics than in the CPAF negative. Previously a low prevalence of retinopathy in teh CPAF positive non-insulin dependent diabetics has been reported. We have shown that this is also true of peripheral macroangiopathy and peripheral neuropathy. Chlorpropamide-alcohol flushing seems to be related to a relative protection against late complications in diabetes and the test might be used to find patients at risk.

Abstract:Laser transmission welding (LTW) causes a temperature rise at the weld interface which leads to melting, molecular diffusion and ultimately joining of the two components. Weld temperatures increase with laser power at a given scan speed. However, at higher temperatures, it has been observed that weld strength starts to decline due to material thermal degradation. Thermal degradation is a kinetic phenomenon which depends on both temperature and time. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) is used to study the thermal degradation of two commonly used thermoplastic materials: polycarbonate (PC) and polyamide 6 (PA6). Each material was studied at several levels of carbon black (CB). The TGA data were then used to obtain the kinetic triplets (frequency factor, activation energy and reaction model) of the materials using a non-linear model-fitting method. These kinetic triplets were combined with temperature-time data obtained from a finite element method (FEM) simulation of the LTW process to predict material degradation. The conditions predicted to cause thermal degradation were then compared with experimental data. It is found that the predicted onset of material degradation is in reasonable agreement with both the onset of experimentally observed degradation and the onset of weld strength decline for PC and PA6.

Abstract:Thermoplastic composites offer advantages over thermoset composites, such as welding, which allows for complex geometries and eliminates drawbacks of mechanical fastening and adhesive bonding. Most thermoplastic resistance welding studies rely on experiments, and reliable models are needed for wider applications. In this paper, a numerical model for the thermoplastic welding process is proposed. The model is based on one-dimensional temperature distribution around the joint interface obtained from the transient heat conduction equation. To evaluate the bond strength, a bonding model that considers intimate contact and autohesion was used. The material and the thermal properties as well as the processing parameters were obtained from the literature. Eight modeling conditions were investigated, and the results were discussed. The model proved useful for conducting parametric studies, which can assist in the selection of processing parameters for future experimental tests. It provided an overview of the temporal evolution of the intimate contact, autohesion, and degree of bonding mechanisms along the weld thickness under various modeling conditions for the APC-2/PEEK composite.

Abstract:Fiberglass-doped polypropylene (PP) and fiberglass-doped acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) are more difficult to be laser transmission welded than other pure plastic because of its low laser transmittance, and this paper aims to quantificationally investigate the relationships of welding parameters, molten pool area and shear strength in welding fiberglass-doped PP and fiberglass-doped ABS by simulation and experiment method. Firstly, comparing with previous researches, several technique difficulties in this welding experiment are pointed out. Secondly, a new hybrid heat source model is proposed to build three-dimensional finite element model for predicting temperature distribution and molten pool geometrical size by coupling Rotary-Gauss body heat source and Gauss plane heat source. Then, a group of taguchi experiment is completed to obtain the characteristics of welded joint, and to evaluate the precision of hybrid heat source model under various welding parameters. Furthermore, the mathematic relationships between molten pool area, laser energy per unit of area and shear strength are fitted out to search optimal welding parameter. Eventually, microstructure observation and fracture appearance analysis experiments are implemented to reveal the root cause of above relationships. This proposed hybrid heat source model and mathematical relationships exhibit commendable value for guiding practical production of laser transmission welding.

Abstract:Heat input, a crucial factor in the optimization of high-temperature thermocouple laser welding, has a significant impact on the appearance and mechanical properties of dissimilar welded joints involving stainless-steel- and nickel-based alloys. This study focuses on laser overlay welding of austenitic stainless steels and nickel-based alloys. The findings indicate that an increase in heat input has a more pronounced effect on the penetration depth and dilution rate. Under high heat input, the weld has cracks, spatter, and other defects. Additionally, considerable amounts of chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni) elements are observed outside the grain near the crack, and their presence increases with higher heat input levels. Phase analysis reveals the presence of numerous Cr2Fe14C and Fe3Ni2 phases within the weld. The heat input increases to the range of 30–35 J/mm, and the weld changes from shear fracture to tensile fracture. In the center of the molten pool, the Vickers hardness is greater than that of the base metal, while in the fusion zone, the Vickers hardness is lower than that of the base metal. The overall hardness is in a downward trend with the increase of heat input, and the minimum hardness is only 159 HV0.3 at 40 J/mm. The heat input falls within the range of 28–30 J/mm, and the temperature shock resistance is at its peak.

Abstract:In clinical surgery, high frequency electric welding is routinely utilized to seal and fuse soft tissues. This procedure denatures collagen by electrothermal coupling, resulting in the formation of new molecular crosslinks. It is critical to understand the temperature distribution and collagen structure changes during welding in order to prevent thermal damage caused by heat generated during welding. In this study, a method combining optical measurement and simulation was presented to evaluate the temperature distribution of vascular tissue during welding, with a fitting degree larger than 97% between simulation findings and measured data. Integrating temperature distribution data, strength test data, and Raman spectrum data, it is discovered that optimal parameters exist in the welding process that may effectively prevent thermal damage while assuring welding strength.
Coronary Sinus Interventions: From Concept to Clinics

Abstract:For almost 100 years the coronary venous system has attracted researchers as an access route to deprived myocardium. Different concepts have been tried and numerous experimental studies have been performed to evaluate whether coronary sinus occlusion, retroinfusion, and retroperfusion of arterial blood via the coronary sinus represent an effective treatment of myocardial ischemia. The early successful studies of Drs. Gregg, Eckstein, Beck and others led to the application of the Beck II procedure, a permanent retroperfusion technique used in the early 1950s to revascularize patients with diffuse atherosclerosis. The coronary sinus route was also used to retroperfuse blood intraoperatively during opening of the heart to keep the heart beating. Excessive mortality and severe side effects, such as myocardial edema and hemorrhage, and an insufficiently advanced technology resulted in the temporary demise of the coronary sinus approaches. Recently, however, the need to improve myocardial protection, despite enormous advances in coronary bypass surgery and interventional cardiology, has resulted in renewed interest in the coronary sinus as an access route to deprived myocardium. Advances in technology such as percutaneous catheter techniques have improved access to the coronary venous system and allowed for a physiological adaptation of coronary sinus retroperfusion techniques. Today the three major coronary sinus techniques, i.e., sychronized retroperfusion (SRP), retroinfusion of cardioplegia during cardiac arrest and retroinfusion of pharmaceutical agents in the normal working heart, and pressure‐controlled intermittent coronary sinus occlusion (PICSO) have been documented as providing superior protection of jeopardized myocardium in selected subsets of patients. All of these techniques currently are under clinical consideration; the retroinfusion of cardioplegia has already found wide clinical acceptance, SRP and PICSO have only recently been tested in first clinical trials.
Numerical Study of Temperature Evolution During Friction Element Welding

Abstract:Abstract Welding of dissimilar materials is critical in industries where mixed materials with high strength-to-weight ratios are urgently needed. Friction element welding (FEW) is a promising solution, with the ability to join high strength materials for a wide range of thicknesses with low input energy and a short processing time. However, the temperature evolution and the influence of different processing parameters remain unclear. To bridge this knowledge gap, this work develops a coupled thermal–mechanical finite element model to study the FEW process. The simulation results agree well with the experimental measurements of material deformation and transient temperature evolution. It is found that the friction element’s rotational speed has the greatest impact on friction heat generation, followed by the processing times for different steps. The aluminum layer is heated during the penetration and cleaning steps, thus a lower rotational speed during the penetration step can help prevent the aluminum layer from undesired overheating. The steel layer and the friction element are mainly heated during the cleaning and welding steps. The strong heating, potentially melting, will be beneficial to the friction element’s plastic deformation and bond formation. To enhance the heating of the steel layer and the friction element, faster rotational speeds or longer processing periods could be employed during the cleaning and welding steps. The results by this study establish the relationship between processing conditions and the temperature evolution of different parts, which will guide the design and optimization of the FEW technique for various applications.
