Abstract:Droplets directionally bouncing off moving superhydrophobic solid surfaces are universal in nature and are crucial in many biological, sustainable, environmental, and engineering applications. However, their underlying physics and regulation strategies remain relatively unknown. This paper demonstrates that the maximum directional acceleration of a post-impact droplet mainly occurs in the spreading stage and that the orientational velocity of the droplet mainly originates in the early impingement process. Furthermore, it clarifies the underlying physics based on momentum transfer process imposed by the boundary layer of impacts and proposes a strategy for regulating the directional droplet velocity using a comprehensive formula. Finally, it shows that directional bouncing reduces the flight momentum of a small flying device by 10%-22%, and the experimental values agree closely with the predicted values. This study reveals the droplet bounce orientation mechanism imposed by moving substrates, provides manipulation methods, and makes positive and meaningful discussions of practical applications.

Biased Motions of a Droplet on the Inclined Micro-conical Superhydrophobic Surface

Abstract:Anisotropic superhydrophobic surfaces that have many superior properties, such as directional self-cleaning, droplet transport, heat transfer, and so on, are widely used in various fields. Different from symmetric surfaces, a water droplet often shows directional spreading, moving, and bouncing on asymmetric surfaces. To investigate the mechanisms and achieve controllability of droplet motions on asymmetric surfaces, a series of surfaces with inclined micro-conical arrays are fabricated by integrating the methods of soft lithography, hot-pressing, and crystal growth. We found that the droplet would spread along the reverse direction of micro-cone's orientation but bounce and detach off the surface and move toward the direction of micro-cone's orientation. To understand these interesting performances, a mathematical model is established from the perspective of force balance, and a series of numerical simulations are performed. Additionally, the relationship between the droplet motions and the micro-structural parameters, including the inclined angle, line space, and height, are studied. Abstract:Directional transportation of liquid droplets plays a significant role in various processes including anti‐fogging, anti‐icing, and materials transportation. Diverse strategies have been developed to achieve lateral bouncing of impacting droplets. However, due to the complexity of the interactions on the interface between a droplet and the solid, quantitatively manipulating the directional movement of the droplet still remains challenging. Here, it is proposed that the directional transportation of a droplet with precise controllability can be achieved by impacting it on a heterogenously wettable surface. It is found that the droplet lateral momentum correlates with the surface area of a geometric region that depends on the position‐coupling between the droplet maximum spreading and the wettability pattern. The well‐controlled droplet directional movement has generality for different Weber numbers and diverse superhydrophilic patterns. Based on this principle, functional materials are orientated to achieve precise positioning of regents for demand‐on chemical reactions, and micro‐floats are driven with different moving velocities. It offers a promising strategy for accurate droplet manipulation based on patterned wettability, which shows great potential in applications such as functional materials transportation, microfluidics, and energy collection and utilization.

Directional Transportation of Impacting Droplets on Wettability-Controlled Surfaces

Abstract:Although a superhydrophobic surface could realize rapid rebounding (i.e., short contact time) of an orthogonal impacting droplet, the rebounding along the original impacting route may limit its engineering application; in contrast, the directional transportation seems to be more promising. Here, we achieve directional transportation of a droplet impacting a wettability-controlled surface. When the droplet eccentrically impacts on the boundary between the superhydrophobic part and the hydrophilic part, it undergoes spreading, retracting, departure, throwing, and breaking up stages, and finally bounces off directionally. The directional transportation distance could even reach more than ten times the droplet size, considered the adhesion length (i.e., covering length on the hydrophilic part by the droplet at the maximum spreading) is optimized. However, there is a critical adhesion length, above which the directional transportation does not occur. To be more generalized, the adhesion length is de-dimensionalized by the maximum spreading radius, and the results show that as the dimensionless adhesion length increases, the transportation distance first increases and then decreases to zero. Under the present impacting conditions, the optimal dimensionless adhesion length corresponding to the maximum transportation distance is near 0.4, and the critical dimensionless adhesion length is about 0.7. These results provide a fundamental understanding of droplet directional transportation and could be useful for related engineering applications.
Steerable directional bouncing and contact time reduction of impacting droplets on superhydrophobic stepped surfaces

Abstract:Hypothesis: The unbalanced capillary force provided by wettability patterns, non-uniform/asymmetric microtextures enables directional droplet transport, while macrotextures have shown potentials in reducing the contact time. Inspired by these findings, we design millimeter superhydrophobic stepped surfaces to simultaneously achieve highly steerable directional bouncing and contact time reduction of impacting droplets. Experiments: The stepped surfaces are fabricated by computerized numerical control, chemical oxidation, hydrophobic treatment. Systematic impact experiments are conducted under Weber number ranging from 10.5 to 20.5, two step heights (0.5 mm and 1.0 mm) and extensive impact positions. Findings: Compared with known microtextured surfaces, the stepped surfaces exhibit excellent performance with the maximum lateral movement distance about 8 times of droplet radius, controllable rebound angle ranging from ∼ 32° to ∼ 90° and up to ∼ 30 % reduction in contact time. Particularly, we divide the directional bouncing characteristics into six regimes and attribute the variation of rebound velocity by the synergistic effects of viscous dissipation, excess surface energy, excess kinetic energy. It is demonstrated that the contact time is reduced by liquid mass redistribution and asymmetry enhancement. Predictive models of contact time that incorporate the coupling effects of impact position, impact velocity and step height are also established.

Abstract:Droplets that can be steered and rebound off surfaces are fundamentally interesting and important due to their promising potential in numerous applications, such as anti-icing and -fogging, spray coating, and self-cleaning. Heterogeneous wettability surfaces have been shown to be an effective means of droplet manipulation. This paper combines numerical simulation with theoretical analysis to investigate the dynamics of two droplets training impacting on and bouncing off a heterogeneous surface (superhydrophobic substrate decorated with a hydrophilic strip). First, the time evolutions of the droplet morphology and velocity vectors are examined to explore the particular dynamic behaviors. At different ratios of the impact velocity, three distinct rebound patterns are observed, and a regime diagram is established. After that, the effects of the impact conditions and surface wettability on the rebound performance of the coalesced droplet are studied systematically. Special attention is paid to the variations of the rebound height and the lateral transportation distance with the Weber number of two droplets and the distance between the impacting point and the hydrophilic stripe. Moreover, a theoretical analysis of two droplets' impact is performed based on the energy conservation. The obtained scaling laws match well with the numerical data in the trend. Our research may strengthen the understanding of the interactions between droplets, which is valuable for the manipulation of multiple droplets in related fields.

Abstract:Kingfishers stand on a branch, and raindrops tumble translationally from feathers during raining, enlightening functional surfaces design and liquid transport control. Far-ranging studies on oriented transportation are confined to vertical impacting, which is, to date, in-depth philosophy of horizontal droplets transport on motionless surface deems to be rather serviceable. This study, employed mixed-wettability surface inspired by kingfishers’ feather, occurs on directional transportation issues, such as the synergies of wettability-controlled, driving force and transportation capability. Here we conduct both experimental testing and CFD-aided numerical modelling to reproduce the asymmetric bouncing and directional transport phenomena. We found that the anisotropic surface manipulates to convert normally vertical impacting to horizontal droplets transport. Law of the thrown droplet, on the other hand, is predominated by the wettability-controlled surface, while the coexistence of contact angle difference and surface offset location cooperatively dictates the intensity and patterns of the thrown droplet. Of all these factors, the post-optimized surfaces are designed first and then the regime map of transportation pattern is elaborated. Results manifest that the elements induce the maximum horizontal transport distance by up to 6.2D0, and first desorption time is only 7.8 ms. The findings shed light on engineering design principles that can pave the way for novel applications in anti-icing, lubrication, and spray cooling.

Abstract:Droplet impacting and bouncing off solid surface plays a vital role in various biological/physiological processes and engineering applications. However, due to a lack of accurate control of force transmission, the maneuver of the droplet movement and energy conversion is rather primitive. Here we show that the translational motion of an impacting droplet can be converted to gyration, with a maximum rotational speed exceeding 7300 revolutions per minute, through heterogeneous surface wettability regulation. The gyration behavior is enabled by the synergetic effect of the asymmetric pinning forces originated from surface heterogeneity and the excess surface energy of the spreading droplet after impact. The findings open a promising avenue for delicate control of liquid motion as well as actuating of solids.

Abstract:Despite notable progress in reducing solid‐liquid contact time through surface engineering, existing methods suffer from one or more limitations. Here, this work reports the adaptive droplet bouncing on the curved islands made of tapered cones to eliminate these intractable conundrums, which unprecedentedly reduce contact time by ≈70% at higher Weber numbers We and ≈20% at low We simultaneously. Rapid detachment of impacting droplets from underlying substrate is highly preferred for mass, momentum, and energy exchange in many practical applications. Driven by this, the past several years have witnessed a surge in engineering macrotexture to reduce solid‐liquid contact time. Despite these advances, these strategies in reducing contact time necessitate the elegant control of either the spatial location for droplet contact or the range of impacting velocity. Here, this work circumvents these limitations by designing a dual gradient surface consisting of a vertical spacing gradient made of tapered pillar arrays and a lateral curvature gradient characterized as macroscopic convex. This design enables the impacting droplets to self‐adapt to asymmetric or pancake bouncing mode accordingly, which renders significant contact time reduction (up to ≈70%) for a broad range of impacting velocities (≈0.4–1.4 m s−1) irrespective of the spatial impacting location. This new design provides a new insight for designing liquid‐repellent surfaces, and offers opportunities for applications including dropwise condensation, energy conversion, and anti‐icing.

Abstract:The precise rebound of a droplet upon hitting a solid surface has garnered significant attention in recent years due to its critical applications in self-cleaning, printing industries, and the design of heat exchanger surfaces, among others. This study introduces an innovative approach that combines femtosecond laser processing with a high-temperature stearic acid modification to create surfaces that feature superhydrophilic (SHL) stripes on a superhydrophobic substrate. By controlling the offset distance between the droplet's impact point and the SHL stripe, we achieved a directional and precise rebound of the droplets. Our findings indicate that the lateral displacement of the droplet increases with the offset distance and always tilts toward the direction of the SHL stripe. This study also incorporates numerical simulations to validate the findings, shedding light on the energy conversion mechanisms at the liquid–solid interface during the impact, particularly during the retraction phase. This discovery is significant for more accurately predicting the specific landing spots of rebounding droplets.

Abstract:Droplet impacting on solid or liquid interfaces is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature. Although complete rebound of droplets is widely observed on superhydrophobic surfaces, the bouncing of droplets on liquid is usually vulnerable due to easy collapse of entrapped air pocket underneath the impinging droplet. Here, we report a superhydrophobic-like bouncing regime on thin liquid film, characterized by the contact time, the spreading dynamics, and the restitution coefficient independent of underlying liquid film. Through experimental exploration and theoretical analysis, we demonstrate that the manifestation of such a superhydrophobic-like bouncing necessitates an intricate interplay between the Weber number, the thickness and viscosity of liquid film. Such insights allow us to tune the droplet behaviours in a well-controlled fashion. We anticipate that the combination of superhydrophobic-like bouncing with inherent advantages of emerging slippery liquid interfaces will find a wide range of applications.

Abstract:The phenomenon of spontaneous droplet transport has a wide range of implications in water collection, microfluidic manipulation, oil-water separation, and various other fields. Achieving efficient and controllable spontaneous droplet transport is therefore of paramount importance. This study investigates the potential of surface charge manipulation to enhance spontaneous droplet transport through comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations. Our findings reveal that the surface charge of the substrate significantly influences its wettability, reducing the contact angle of the droplet and increasing both the contact area and interaction energy. Moreover, we introduce a novel approach to enhance droplet mobility by creating a surface charge gradient on the substrate. By introducing bands with varying charges along a specific direction of the substrate, the droplet experiences a force directed toward regions of increasing charge, thereby facilitating its movement. Importantly, the driving mechanism of droplet motion is well explained by combining classical electrowetting theory with the analysis of the droplet's advancing and receding contact angles, which demonstrates that a more pronounced surface charge gradient generates greater force and enhances droplet mobility. These findings offer valuable insights into the design of microfluidic systems and related applications based on electrowetting.

Abstract:Droplet bouncing on surfaces has long been observed in nature and industry, which is rather intriguing and instructive for related technology development. Recent decades have witnessed significant progress on the mechanism exploring, device development, and application demonstrations. In this review, we focus on the recent progresses that aim at introducing the phenomena, revealing the underlying physics, and promoting the potential applications of water droplet bouncing on various solid and soft surfaces like hydrophobic/hydrophilic/heated solid surfaces and liquid film/bath/droplet. The water droplet bouncing dynamics is highly dependent on the liquid properties, surface characteristics and ambient pressure. The absence of droplet/surface contact, as the key point for droplet bouncing, can be realized by lowering the Weber number of droplet and designing hydrophobic surfaces to reduce the droplet-surface contact, actively maintaining the air/vapor film by heating the solid surface above the Leidenfrost point, vibrating the liquid bath, applying electric/magnetic/pressure fields, etc. Moreover, the comprehensive understanding of droplet bouncing has promoted the development of numerous advanced surfaces technologies, including surface self-cleaning, directional droplet transportation, heat transfer enhancement, droplet logic gate, electrical generation and so on. Finally, the future directions for research and application are outlined and discussed.

Abstract:The rebound behaviors of multiple droplets simultaneously impacting a superhydrophobic surface were investigated via lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) simulations. Three rebound regions were identified, i.e., an edge-dominating region, a center-dominating region, and an independent rebound region. The occurrence of the rebound regions strongly depends on the droplet spacing and the associated Weber and Reynolds numbers. Three new rebound morphologies, i.e., a pin-shaped morphology, a downward comb-shaped morphology, and an upward comb-shaped morphology, were presented. Intriguingly, in the edge-dominating region, the central droplets experience a secondary wetting process to significantly prolong the contact time. However, in the center-dominating region, the contact time is dramatically shortened because of the strong interactions generated by the central droplets and the central ridges. Abstract:Superhydrophobic surfaces have shown huge potential in diverse fields. However, the hydrodynamics of droplet impacting on moving superhydrophobic surfaces are largely unexplored, especially for surfaces with a high moving velocity. The knowledge gap in liquid-solid interaction between impacting droplets and high-speed moving superhydrophobic surfaces should be filled to better guide practical engineering applications . Here, a superhydrophobic surface is fabricated as the experimental surface by a chemical deposition-etching method and droplet impacting experiments on horizontally moving superhydrophobic surfaces (realized by impacting the edge of a rotating surface) are systematically conducted. The moving velocity of superhydrophobic surfaces reaches nearly 10.0 m/s, which is approximately three times the velocity in previous relevant studies. The results show that the droplet spreading is greatly enhanced when the surface velocity exceeds a critical value, and it is independent of the droplet Weber number ( We ). The droplet detaches from the surface in the shape of "Prince Rupert's Drop", reducing the contact time by over 40%. The critical surface velocity is characterized by We / We s = 0.17, where We s is the Weber number of the moving surface. To reveal the dynamics of Prince Rupert's Drop bouncing, scaling laws of the maximum spreading coefficient and the contact time are developed, which agree well with experimental results.

Impact Dynamics of Nanodroplets on V-Shaped Substrates: Asymmetrical Behavior and Fast-Rebound Dynamics

Abstract:Controlling the drop impact behaviors plays an important role in both designing surface functional materials and improving industrial techniques. Here, the impact dynamics of nanodroplets on "V-shaped" substrates is studied, which is manifested as asymmetrical spreading and retraction behaviors that could be weakened by increasing the angles of the "V" shape, accompanied by the evolution of the shape from leaf-like, stripe-like, to dumbbell-like at v = 20 Å/ps. When v increases to 40 Å/ps, the previously deposited nanodroplets could be transformed to a rebound one at α = 60 and 90°, which is ascribed to the combined effect of the confinement conditions and the extrusion force. Furthermore, an impact behavior map as a function of impact velocity and angle is depicted, which suggests that a decrease in angles or an increase in the impact velocity is likely to cause the nanodroplets to rebound. More importantly, the results give visible evidence that compared to the flat substrates, the V-shaped structure is advantageous for achieving a fast-rebound behavior even at a low speed of impact, which should be good news for practical applications in many multidisciplinary fields, such as self-cleaning, anti-icing/fogging, pollution prevention, energy storage, and so forth.

Abstract:By introducing anisotropic micropatterns on a superhydrophobic surface, we demonstrate that water microdroplets can coalesce and leap over the surface spontaneously along a prescribed direction. This controlled behavior is attributed to anisotropic liquid-solid adhesion. An analysis relating the preferential leaping probability to the geometrical parameters of the system is presented with consistent experimental results. Surfaces with this rare quality demonstrate many unique characteristics, such as self-powered, and relatively long-distance transport of microdroplets by relay coalescence-induced leaping.

Abstract:Self-propelled droplet motion has applications in various engineering fields such as self-cleaning surfaces, heat transfer enhancement, and anti-icing methods. The droplet behavior is classified into three types based on their motion features and leftover marks as immobile droplet coalescence, self-propelled droplet jumping, and self-propelled droplet sweeping. This study focuses on the droplet sweeping that occurs due to the ultra-small rolling angle of the superhydrophobic surface, where the resulting droplet sweeps along the surface, merging with all the droplets it meets and leaving a long, narrow, clear track with a large droplet at the end of the track. An easy method is developed to predict the droplet sweeping direction based on the relative positions of the droplets just before coalescence. The droplet sweeping always absorbs dozens of droplets and is not limited by the surface structures; thus, this sweeping has many useful applications. In addition, the relationships between the droplet behavior and the number of participating droplets are also analyzed statistically.

Abstract:Designing the nanostructured substrates with efficiently executing self-cleaning functions such as anti-icing, anti-fogging, anti-flaming, and anti-corrosion is always a hot scientific research topic and plays an essential role in practical applications. Herein, a novel substrate decorated with wrinkled structures is investigated. Results show that it has a large improvement in the reduction of contact time compared with the smooth substrate, and could affect the critical velocity of transition between retraction rebound and non-reaction transition. Effects of geometrical parameters of the wrinkled structures on droplet rebounding ability are detailed discussed, such as angles, intervals, and arrangement gradient. Most importantly, a well-designed substrate decorated with wrinkled structures and two confinement walls is proposed, which is found that the contact time could be largely reduced due to the limitation of spreading behaviors of the impacting droplets resulting from the heavy restriction effect of the confined walls. The findings of this work are expected to provide potential implications for many multidisciplinary fields, such as aerospace engineering, industrial manufacturing, interfacial heat transfer, environment, energy storage, and so forth.

Hypergyrating Droplets Generated on a Selective Laser-Textured Heterogeneous Wettability Surface

Abstract:An impacting droplet on water-repellent surfaces experiences spreading, retraction, and bouncing phases, among which the spontaneous droplets gyrating is very interesting and has promising applications. Here, we present an ultrahigh-speed gyrating droplet generation method via torque transmission on a heterogeneous wettability surface. Hybrid superhydrophobic-superhydrophilic (SH-SHL) patterns were fabricated by selective laser texturing on aluminum alloy substrates. The maximum static contact angles (CAs) of the SH region and SHL region were 163.3 ± 2 and 0 ± 1°, and the advancing and receding CAs were 162.2 ± 1 and 159.9 ± 1°, respectively. The hybrid SH-SHL pattern coupling with the translational kinetic energy of impacting droplet and the rotational momentum of the rotating substrate has been proved as a high-efficiency energy conversion method to construct hypergyrating droplets. A hypergyrating speed exceeding 96 700 rpm (13 times of the latest reported value) was achieved in droplets impact on the hybrid SH-SHL-patterned heterogeneous wettability surface, and the maximum energy transformation ratio (α) of the rotating specimen driven torque to the rebounded gyrating droplet is 83.40%. The regulation of the maximum gyrating speed of a bouncing droplet could be controlled by the pattern size and the substrate driving speed, which suggests a practical approach in the energy transformation, a new type of cleaning strategy, and other industrial applications.
