Abstract:Many accidents occur world-wide in the use of construction plant and equipment, and safety training is considered by many robe one of the best approaches to their prevention. However, current safety training methods/tools are unable to provide trainees with the hands-on practice needed. Game technology-based safety training platforms have the potential to overcome this problem in a virtual environment.One such platform is described in this paper - its characteristics are analysed and its possible contribution to safety training identified. This is developed and tested by means of a case study involving three major pieces of construction plant, which successfully demonstrates that the platform can improve the process and performance of the safety training involved in their operation. This research not only presents a new and useful solution to the safety training of construction operations, but illustrates the potential use of advanced technologies in solving construction industry problems in general. Abstract:Accidents resulting from poorly planned or set up work environments are a major concern within the construction industry. While traditional education and training of personnel offer well-known approaches for establishing safe work practices, serious games in virtual reality (VR) are used more often as a complementary approach for active, personalized learning experiences. Their designs yet have to take full advantage of how trainees can potentially manipulate and interact with virtual objects. In addition, little construction safety research has focused on generating and analyzing the inherent data that can be collected about the trainees’ actions in the virtual environment. The objective analysis of their performance in the virtual environment offers precise feedback to sensitize their work behavior later in real practice. This research presents a novel framework for the generation and assessment of the trainees’ data in augmented virtuality (AV). The proposed approach is tested in a virtual work environment consisting of multiple stages and hazards that are consistent within today’s construction sites and workshops. A real angle grinder has been reworked and repurposed as an interactive AV controller to further enhance immersion. Results on the performance in the proposed system and the experiences of two groups of volunteering participants are presented and discussed. An outlook presents future avenues towards enhancing existing construction safety education and focus points on correlating objective tracking data with self-assessment.

Design/methodology/approach This research presents a framework for the generation and automated assessment of VR data. The proposed approach is tested and evaluated in a virtual work environment consisting of multiple hazards. VR requires expensive hardware, technical knowledge and user acceptance to run the games effectively. An effort has been made to transfer the advantages VR gives to a physical setup. This is done using a light detection and ranging sensing system, which collects similar data and enables the same learning experiences. Findings Encouraging results on the participants’ experiences are presented and discussed based on actual needs in the Danish construction industry. An outlook presents future avenues towards enhancing existing learning methods. Practical implications The proposed method will help develop active learning environments, which could lead to safer construction work stations in the future, either through VR or physical simulations. Originality/value The utilization of run-time data collection and automatic analysis allows for better personalized feedback in the construction safety training. Furthermore, this study investigates the possibility of transferring the benefits of this system to a physical setup that is easier to use on construction sites without investing in a full VR setup.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Digital technologies (DTs) have gained recognition for educating and training individuals, covering multiple areas in construction sector to enhance safety performance. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic literature review (SLR) focusing on DTs utilized for safety education and training in the construction sector since 2000 and explore their various application areas. METHODS: Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed to conduct SLR and fifty-nine articles were identified. This study describes the research trends through bibliometric analysis, encompassing aspects such as annual publication counts, document sources, influential authors and documents, countries of origin, and prevalent research areas. RESULTS: The results revealed that immersive virtual reality (VR) technology has seen extensive utilization in educating and training individuals. In the context of application areas, most DTs concentrated on augmenting individuals’ proficiency in recognizing hazards. CONCLUSION: The findings summarized the primary research domains, deliberated upon prevailing research gaps, and proposed forthcoming directions for applying DTs in safety training. The suggested future directions can potentially enhance safety training effectiveness within the construction firm.

A critical review of the feasibility of emerging technologies for improving safety behavior on construction sites

Abstract:Introduction: Advancements in the modern construction industry have contributed to the development of a range of technology-based interventions to improve the safety behavior of front-line construction workers. Notwithstanding the extensive research on safety behavior, there is still a paucity of research on assessing technology interventions of safety behavior to provide an overview of their strengths and limitations. The present study aims to bridge this gap in the literature and identify the main trends of research. Method: A systematic review and critical content analysis are adopted to capture an overview of the state of knowledge on safety behavior technologies. As a result of searching Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases in the period from Jan 2010 to Feb 2023, a total of 359 potential studies went through the systematic screening process and finally, 48 representative studies were selected followed by an assessment of the feasibility and applicability of the safety behavior technologies. Results: It was found that safety behavior technology is characterized by seven technologies including virtual-reality simulation (T1), eye-tracking technology (T2), prediction modeling of safety behavior (T3), computer-based training (T4), drone/sensor-based hazard monitoring (T5), vision-based behavior monitoring (T6), and real-time positioning (T7). Conclusions: This research improves understanding of the status of safety behavior technologies and provides a critical review of their feasibility from the perspective of four assessment criteria including application, limitation, benefit, and feasibility. Practical applications: The categorizations of technologies add value to the body of knowledge in terms of generic requirements for their implementation and adaptation on construction sites.
Improvement of short-term outcomes with VR-based safety training for work at heights

Abstract:Serious games and virtual reality offer engaging learning opportunities and a cost-effective solution within an immersive and safe environment for safety training in construction. However, there have been few examples of safety training for work at heights developed using these technologies, especially commercial training. To fill this literature gap, a new VR-based safety training was developed and compared with lecture-based training across time. We conducted a quasi-experiment with a non-equivalent group design with 102 workers from six construction sites in Colombia. Learning objectives, observations from training centers, and national regulations were considered during the design of the training methods. Training outcomes were assessed using Kirkpatrick's model. We found that both training approaches were effective in improving knowledge test results and self-reported attitudes in the short-term; and risk-perception, self-reported behavior and safety climate in the long-term. In particular, participants of the VR-based training got significantly higher results in knowledge and reported higher attitudes (commitment and motivation) than participants of the lecture-based training. We suggest that safety managers and practitioners should invest in VR using serious games as an alternative to training programs based on short-term outcomes. Future work is needed to test VR for long-term outcomes.

Abstract:The high accident rate in the construction industry has a major impact on how well projects turn out. Despite substantial investments in safety planning and supervision, there has been a marked increase in the construction industry's accident rate compared to other sectors. Serious games based on VR have recently been used in the study, suggesting that workers are now more safety conscious. However, these situations need many resources to create and are not always realistic. Hence this paper, Digital Twin-based Construction Safety Training Framework (DT-CSTF) with Artificial Intelligence (AI), has been proposed to monitor employees' emotional, mental, and physical well-being in real-time. The report sheds light on the significance of DT technology and its function in Industry 5.0. Using the Unity game engine, the proposed DT-CSTF creates a virtual reality-based training environment (VRTE) prototype that incorporates BIM, construction timetables, and safety requirements. Following this, the suggested structure enables gathering user data about risks and providing tailored feedback. Automated virtual reality game training scenarios are created using data given by digital twins on project intent, project status, safety requirements, and history. Both improved digital twins and periodic construction safety monitoring are anticipated to reap the benefits of dynamic virtual reality training. Abstract:Construction is a high hazard industry which involves many factors that are potentially dangerous to workers. Safety has always been advocated by many construction companies, and they have been working hard to make sure their employees are protected from fatalities and injuries. With the advent of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR), there has been a witnessed trend of capitalizing on sophisticated immersive VR/AR applications to create forgiving environments for visualizing complex workplace situations, building up risk-preventive knowledge and undergoing training. To better understand the state-of-the-art of VR/AR applications in construction safety (VR/AR-CS) and from which to uncover the related issues and propose possible improvements, this paper starts with a review and synthesis of research evidence for several VR/AR prototypes, products and the related training and evaluation paradigms. Predicated upon a wide range of well-acknowledged scholarly journals, this paper comes up with a generic taxonomy consisting of VR/AR technology characteristics, application domains, safety scenarios and evaluation methods. According to this taxonomy, a number of technical features and types that could be implemented in the context of construction safety enhancement are derived and further elaborated, while significant application domains and trends regarding the VR/AR-CS research are generalized, i.e., hazards recognition and identification, safety training and education, safety instruction and inspection, and so on. Last but not least, this study sets forth a list of gaps derived from the in-depth review and comes up with the prospective research works. It is envisioned that the outcomes of this paper could assist both researchers and industrial practitioners with appreciating the research and practice frontier of VR/AR-CS and soliciting the latest VR/AR applications.

Abstract:One of the main factors leading to fatalities in construction sites is the inefficiency of safety training programs. This article presents an immersive and interactive virtual reality (VR) model for safety training, which is an advanced and more comprehensive version of previously developed VR models in the literature. The novelty of this research is present in the proposed general safety training model that is fully immersive and interactive, that is built based on the concepts of experiential learning; where users learn from their mistakes rather than being passive learners in a virtual environment. The model, which was developed using the Unity® platform and C#, contains 12 scenario‐based hazards with programmed interactions and responses to the actions of the trainees. The developed model was tested for two aspects: (1) the ability to achieve learning outcomes and supersede traditional training, and (2) user experience and usability. Using an experimental setting and statistical tests, the developed model has shown statistical significance when it comes to its efficiency in enhancing hazard identification and mitigation skills as opposed to traditional training. The model also performed well in terms of usability and user experience, and important lessons were extracted for future VR development in construction education applications. This research strengthens the utility of VR as an effective tool for experiential learning; which enables future research in exploring how computer applications can improve experiential learning even further.

Abstract:Purpose In the construction sector, site excavation is one of the most dangerous and challenging activities. Proper training can be an effective way to mitigate excavation hazards. Virtual reality (VR) has been used as an effective training tool to enhance safety performance in various industries. However, little attention has been paid to the potential of this technology for construction excavation safety training. Design/methodology/approach This study proposes an immersive VR training system for excavation safety and hazard identification. The proposed VR training system was compared with a health and safety manual via a controlled experiment. Findings Results based on scores obtained immediately after training indicate that VR training significantly enhanced practical performance, knowledge acquisition and self-efficacy. Results also show that knowledge was retained four weeks after training. In addition, VR training outperformed health and safety manuals regarding knowledge retention. Originality/value This study measures the practical performance to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed VR training system. Also, this study compares the VR training system with a traditional training method by measuring knowledge acquisition and retention. The results demonstrate the potential of VR as a training tool for excavation safety and hazards.

Although new learning methods, such as virtual reality (VR), have been deployed, they still do not find implementation on a large-scale. This research proposes the concept of 'virtual training pills' (VTP), i.e. delivering learning content in the form of short educational games by using a common technological platform based on virtual, interactive and immersive reality. An application study has been conducted in the case of a decommissioned nuclear power plant, which is classified as confined and pollution-suspected space. These areas represent a challenging environment for maintenance and inspection activities. The results proved the potential of this novel game-based learning approach: short 'learning pills' are much more effective than long role-playing games. Abstract:Technologies such as virtual reality (VR), online databases, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), 4 D Computer-Aided Design (4 D CAD), wearable robotics have been adopted to improve construction site health and safety. However, little attempt has been made to map global research on construction health and safety technologies. Therefore, this paper conducts a review of technologies for construction health and safety management to reveal emerging research trends. A bibliometric review adopting a two-step literature selection method was conducted to compile relevant publications from the Scopus database. In total, 240 related papers were examined. VOSviewer was used to develop a co-occurrence network based on the bibliographic data obtained. The analysis focussed on co-authorship per country, country/region distribution, the number of publications annually, publication source and source and trend of research topics. Findings revealed that emerging trends in construction health and safety technologies research focussed on project health and safety design and planning, visualisation and image processing for construction projects, digital technologies for project monitoring, information management and Internet of Things, automation and robotic systems, health and safety and accident prevention and structure evaluation.

Abstract:This article provides a critical review of the current studies in VR-based health and safety training, assessment techniques, training evaluation, and its potential to improve the training evaluation outcomes in various high-risk engineering industries. The results of this analysis indicate the breadth of VR-based applications in training users on a combination of topics including risk assessment, machinery, and/or process operation in various industries. Data showed that the use of fully immersive VR increased significantly due to the improvements in hardware, display resolution, and affordability. Most of the articles used external assessment to measure the changes in the satisfaction and the declarative knowledge of trainees as these are easier to implement, while some articles started to implement internal assessment that provides an automated assessment capable of measuring complex skills. The results of the study also suggest that it has the potential to improve the training evaluation outcomes compared to traditional training methods. The findings from this study help practitioners and safety managers by providing a training design framework that may be adopted to optimise the condition of a VR-based training.

Abstract:Emergency evacuation plans and evacuation drills are mandatory in public buildings in many countries. Their importance is considerable when it comes to guarantee safety and protection during a crisis. However, sometimes discrepancies arise between the goals of the plan and its outcomes, because people find it hard to take them very seriously, or due to the financial and time resources required. Serious games are a possible solution to tackle this problem. They have been successfully applied in different areas such as health care and education, since they can simulate an environment/task quite accurately, making them a practical alternative to real-life simulations. This paper presents a serious game developed using Unity3D to recreate a virtual fire evacuation training tool. The prototype application was deployed which allowed the validation by user testing. A sample of 30 individuals tested the evacuating scenario, having to leave the building during a fire in the shortest time possible. Results have shown that users effectively end up learning some evacuation procedures from the activity, even if only to look for emergency signs indicating the best evacuation paths. It was also evidenced that users with higher video game experience had a significantly better performance.

Abstract:Serious Games (SG) is a pedagogical approach with technical integration of entertainment and knowledge. Even though this approach has been applied in construction, most of the studies have focused on specific areas, such as sustainability and construction safety. Therefore, a general representation of SG applications in construction is in-evident. This gap creates uncertainties and lack of directives on the know-what and know-how of SG in construction. A systematic review and detailed content analysis of 50 post-screened articles related to SG in construction/building have depicted the current state and consolidated view on the applications of SG in construction. The applications of SG were categorized into several subject matters, such as construction safety, management and fire evacuation. Further, an overall classification system for SG in construction has been established, by including elements such as user and purpose. Based on the established classification, a SG process framework was developed and the framework could serve as a reference for construction stakeholders/game developers in designing games for their needs. The main outcome from this study (classification and process framework) would benefit the academic and industry practitioners, as the establishments could guide game development in construction, particularly in empowering construction education and training.
Using Serious Games and Virtual Simulations in Construction Technology Education

Abstract:In tertiary construction education programs, it is becoming increasingly difficult to take students to site to obtain first hand experience of construction technology. This is especially the case with large classes, sites that have limited safety capacity to take students, and the general logistical problems of getting students to and from site. The brevity of site visits provides novelty but restricts the depth of learning. Computer gaming simulation offers a potential alternative. Though not the real thing, the simulation environment provides targeted activities and problems; it also offers the potential to engage students for long periods of time and in an immersive environment. This paper looks at the use of virtual simulation games available in construction and then focuses on the implementation of a specific type of simulation suited to construction technology and construction processes. It involves the hands-on virtual usage of site equipment including excavators, cranes, forklifts and concrete placement equipment in the context of an active construction site. Students control and manipulate the machinery according to assigned tasks. The pros, cons and educational merits of such an approach are analysed including student evaluation of the simulation as a learning vehicle.

Abstract:The construction industry faces persistent safety challenges, with many occupational accidents and fatalities. Virtual safety training methods often fall short in terms of realism. This article introduces a pioneering approach that exploits digital twins to create Virtual Training Environments (VTEs) tailored for construction safety. The Digital Twin for Construction Safety (DTCS) framework seamlessly integrates Building Information Modelling (BIM) models, schedules, resources, and hazard data into a prototype using the game engine Unity. It enables the generation of VTEs with minimal user interaction, empowering safety trainers to define personalised scenarios based on specific project parameters and training requirements tailored to the trainees' needs. The evaluation of this approach through three distinct real-world projects and a case study with six trainees demonstrates its efficacy. Results indicate the DTCS framework's ability to efficiently create VTEs independently of the project once a BIM model is available. Moreover, the framework provides meaningful feedback to the trainee by evaluating the performance using run-time data collection. The collected data promises use for several applications, but future research must validate its effectiveness. Beyond training, the study highlights the utility of VTEs in improving safety design and hazard mitigation strategies through data-driven insights.

Abstract:Virtual reality (VR) is one of the most innovative technologies that allows the development of a computerised, three-dimensional image that imitates reality. With this solution, it is possible to show different objects and even simulate a sequence of actions. The application of virtual reality technology in industries with high accident rates, such as mining and construction, contributes to sustainability by enhancing occupational health and safety (OHS) practices. However, it should be emphasised that the application of VR in these industries is much broader and includes aspects such as visualisation, monitoring and design. This research contributes to sustainability by identifying research gaps, providing an in-depth systematic review of the use of virtual reality technology and outlining the potential of VR technology to advance safety practices in mining and construction, thereby promoting the well-being of workers, reducing accidents and minimising negative environmental impacts associated with workplace incidents. Based on the analyses performed, the future of VR technology for improving work processes in terms of the safety, efficiency and profitability of implementation is outlined. The results of this study provide a comprehensive framework for identifying research gaps in this area to advance research in the academic community and to improve safety in mining and construction workplaces.
